Fake It 'Til You Make It
December 14, 2020
Business is about authenticity. It’s also about faking it until you make it.
I know these concepts sound contradictory, but hear me out. Imagine a young strapping lad looking to make a name for himself in the business world. He has no skills or discernable personality. He fakes his way through numerous interviews, is hired, and lives a life of wealth and success. His commitment to faking is so profound it becomes authentic. Whatever his true self was going to be has been replaced by what his inauthentic self has become, which Websters acknowledges as the definition of authenticity. Do you follow?
An absolute, 100% commitment to inauthenticity is indeed authentic. This paradoxical vision is the key to business. Those who abandon their true self and become a different person entirely are the envy of the business world. And they’re super rich. Those who embrace their true selves spend life inside a cubicle and eat PB&J for lunch. Who would you rather be?
If you want to serve at the executive level, a roadmap has been established. FAKE IT. Bury your true self with Fort Knox gold and laugh all the way to the bank. Become such a bastardized version of yourself people believe you are a bastard. Fake the inauthenticity right out of your body. Bottle up the manufactured authenticity that oozes out like an essential oil. Believe you can be the person you were never meant to be.
