- Description: The 7thonline founder on Excel as retail's biggest enemy, the sizing problem nobody has solved, and the investor who backed him two months before September 11.

# Max Ma was doing AI 25 years before it was cool

Twenty years ago, people in the retail industry had a name for Max Ma and his team. "Some of the people didn't like us and called us the science guys, not as a compliment," Ma said on the CEO.com Podcast. "Today, I love to be called the science guys."

Ma founded [7thonline](https://www.7thonline.com/?ref=ceo.com) in 1999 after years on the IT side of retail, including stints at HBO and Pantone, where he was [the lead developer for Pantone's Electronic Color Systems](https://www.citybiz.co/article/721831/qa-with-max-ma-ceo-and-founder-at-7thonline/?ref=ceo.com). What he saw in the industry bothered him. Companies doing billions in revenue planned their inventory by hand, and the results showed up on the sales floor. "There were a lot of inefficiencies in the retail industry, particularly on the supply chain side of the business," he said. "Customers often couldn't find their sizes, the products they like to purchase. So that led to me and the other team members of our business to start 7thonline to help retailers to improve their inventory decisions."

The company started in an 800-square-foot office. It now operates globally, and its clients include Birkenstock, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, and Patagonia.

The bet from the beginning was artificial intelligence. 7thonline was building machine learning into demand planning decades before the term became a boardroom fixture, and Ma has watched the current boom with some amusement. He also thinks most people define AI too narrowly. "Right now, most people know about AI as a large language model. That's just one of many, many AI methodologies," he said. "Different business cases may require different AI capabilities and algorithms. So we've been aggressively iteratively developing all these AI capabilities over the past 25 years."

Some of those capabilities forecast demand five years out. Others attack sizing, which Ma considers among the hardest problems in fashion. "How you can deliver the appropriate, customer-matching size profile for each retail location has been a holy grail of the challenge for the retail industry," he said. The company's latest release, an AI ranking engine called 7thSense, [launched at NRF 2026](https://www.7thonline.com/post/scaling-retail-intuition-to-intelligence/?ref=ceo.com) and scores new products against past winners down to style, color, and size at the individual store.

Ask Ma what holds retailers back, and he doesn't talk about algorithms. "One of the biggest challenges has been everybody uses Excel," he said. "People have different versions, and it doesn't give the corporations a unified view. If you live with Excel all day long, you are not getting closer to AI."

The tariff environment has pushed more retailers toward his door. "People have to reduce their risks by lowering unproductive inventory. That's probably the reason why we get a lot of inbound calls these days," he said. "I guess our sales team is busy writing orders."

Twenty-six years in, Ma runs the company on a simple idea about leadership. "Everybody's supposed to be a leader in my team. It doesn't matter if you are a low-level team member or a high-level team member," he said. He hands his managers the same books he learned from, Ram Charan's "Know-How" and Jack Welch's "Winning," and treats them like textbooks.

Every CEO.com Podcast conversation ends with the same question: who gave you a chance? Ma named [Alan Patricof](https://www.greycroft.com/team/alan-patricof/?ref=ceo.com), the venture capitalist who created Patricof & Co. Ventures, the predecessor to Apax Partners, and later co-founded Greycroft. Patricof invested in 7thonline in July 2001, two months before September 11.

"If people were doing business back then, everybody could appreciate how critical that support was to our business," Ma said. "He has been my biggest mentor. I still seek out advice from him, and he's still active in the business world. He lives not too far away, in the Upper East Side. I call him up for advice, and we meet up."

00:00:25.192 --> 00:00:30.837
So,<00:00:25.994> uh,<00:00:26.235> before<00:00:26.571> 7th<00:00:26.956> Online,<00:00:27.614> I<00:00:27.774> was,<00:00:28.159> uh,<00:00:28.640> working<00:00:29.201> in<00:00:29.538> the<00:00:29.939> retail<00:00:30.324> industry.

00:00:31.703 --> 00:00:48.743
On<00:00:32.264> the<00:00:32.360> IT<00:00:32.680> side<00:00:33.210> of<00:00:33.322> the<00:00:33.466> business<00:00:34.251> and<00:00:34.348> then<00:00:34.668> realized<00:00:36.031> there<00:00:36.335> was<00:00:36.576> a<00:00:36.752> lot<00:00:37.858> of<00:00:38.596> inefficiencies<00:00:41.401> in<00:00:41.481> the<00:00:41.626> retail<00:00:42.058> industry,<00:00:42.523> particularly<00:00:44.190> on<00:00:44.447> the<00:00:45.184> supply<00:00:45.569> chain<00:00:45.810> side<00:00:46.306> of<00:00:46.435> the<00:00:46.531> business,<00:00:47.332> the<00:00:47.573> inventory<00:00:48.214> problems.

00:00:49.400 --> 00:01:01.215
Everybody<00:00:49.881> have<00:00:50.699> experienced<00:00:52.126> a<00:00:52.783> lot<00:00:53.023> of<00:00:53.264> leftover<00:00:54.706> and<00:00:54.851> also<00:00:56.053> customers<00:00:56.774> often<00:00:57.191> couldn't<00:00:57.496> find<00:00:58.073> their<00:00:58.249> sizes,<00:00:59.435> the<00:00:59.516> products<00:01:00.061> they<00:01:00.157> would<00:01:00.397> like<00:01:00.638> to<00:01:00.798> purchase.

00:01:01.439 --> 00:01:16.179
So<00:01:02.064> that<00:01:02.803> led<00:01:03.191> to<00:01:05.048> me<00:01:05.371> and<00:01:05.467> the<00:01:05.694> other<00:01:07.082> team<00:01:07.470> members<00:01:08.842> of<00:01:08.939> our<00:01:09.165> business<00:01:09.569> to<00:01:09.730> start<00:01:10.069> 7thOnline<00:01:10.957> to<00:01:11.119> help<00:01:11.442> retailers<00:01:12.800> to<00:01:12.978> improve<00:01:13.948> their<00:01:15.015> inventory<00:01:15.710> decisions.

00:01:16.680 --> 00:01:17.230
How's<00:01:16.874> it<00:01:16.939> going?

00:01:17.343 --> 00:01:18.572
How<00:01:17.570> has<00:01:17.731> the<00:01:17.828> business<00:01:18.216> evolved?

00:01:18.620 --> 00:01:20.819
I'm<00:01:18.782> sure<00:01:18.879> it's<00:01:19.041> evolved<00:01:19.995> quite<00:01:20.173> dramatically.

00:01:20.965 --> 00:01:25.730
How<00:01:21.030> have<00:01:21.288> you<00:01:21.530> managed<00:01:22.096> that<00:01:22.273> evolution<00:01:23.630> and<00:01:23.727> what<00:01:23.856> have<00:01:23.969> you<00:01:24.050> learned<00:01:24.276> about<00:01:24.518> leadership<00:01:25.019> during<00:01:25.261> that<00:01:25.423> time?

00:01:26.231 --> 00:01:31.577
Yeah,<00:01:26.473> so<00:01:28.330> we<00:01:28.653> have<00:01:29.057> evolved<00:01:30.965> quite<00:01:31.207> a<00:01:31.287> bit.

00:01:31.674 --> 00:01:36.297
You<00:01:31.770> know,<00:01:31.996> we<00:01:32.173> started<00:01:32.818> from,<00:01:33.365> uh,<00:01:34.654> 800<00:01:35.073> square<00:01:35.476> feet<00:01:35.943> office.

00:01:36.829 --> 00:01:52.036
Now<00:01:37.151> we<00:01:37.231> have<00:01:37.489> multiple<00:01:38.440> offices<00:01:39.569> globally,<00:01:40.865> uh,<00:01:41.449> with<00:01:42.000> some<00:01:42.340> of<00:01:42.502> the<00:01:42.745> most,<00:01:44.350> uh,<00:01:44.933> reputable<00:01:46.230> retail<00:01:46.700> brands<00:01:47.750> like<00:01:48.007> Birkenstock,<00:01:48.894> Calvin<00:01:49.280> Klein,<00:01:49.764> Tommy<00:01:50.086> Hilfiger,<00:01:51.214> Patagonia.

00:01:52.261 --> 00:02:12.685
And,<00:01:52.938> uh,<00:01:53.711> you<00:01:53.744> know,<00:01:54.759> uh,<00:01:55.081> our<00:01:55.339> product<00:01:57.252> started<00:01:57.862> from<00:01:58.055> a<00:01:58.199> very<00:01:58.456> small<00:01:59.163> part<00:01:59.628> of<00:02:01.010> supply<00:02:01.411> chain<00:02:01.652> planning,<00:02:02.519> now<00:02:03.242> cover<00:02:03.579> the<00:02:03.820> full<00:02:04.125> spectrum<00:02:05.571> of<00:02:06.550> multichannel<00:02:07.819> inventory<00:02:08.397> planning<00:02:09.184> and<00:02:10.886> production<00:02:12.171> decisions.

00:02:12.733 --> 00:02:28.794
Talking<00:02:13.151> about<00:02:13.456> leadership,<00:02:14.243> I<00:02:14.323> guess<00:02:15.768> it<00:02:15.945> starts<00:02:16.427> from<00:02:18.434> recruiting<00:02:19.253> some<00:02:19.575> of<00:02:19.719> the<00:02:19.880> best<00:02:20.281> and<00:02:20.346> the<00:02:20.442> brightest<00:02:21.389> people<00:02:21.968> from<00:02:22.208> the<00:02:22.433> industry,<00:02:23.734> both<00:02:24.120> from<00:02:25.710> the<00:02:25.824> retail<00:02:26.313> side<00:02:26.803> as<00:02:27.032> well<00:02:27.358> as<00:02:27.538> from<00:02:27.701> the<00:02:27.864> technology<00:02:28.582> side.

00:02:29.252 --> 00:02:49.552
So<00:02:29.643> over<00:02:29.758> the<00:02:29.970> years,<00:02:31.266> uh,<00:02:31.298> we<00:02:31.444> always,<00:02:32.637> uh,<00:02:32.959> work<00:02:33.137> very<00:02:33.378> hard<00:02:34.346> to<00:02:34.668> attract,<00:02:36.281> you<00:02:36.506> know,<00:02:36.990> and<00:02:37.248> recruit<00:02:37.958> and,<00:02:38.764> uh,<00:02:39.086> and,<00:02:39.327> and<00:02:39.568> retain<00:02:41.046> some<00:02:41.416> of<00:02:41.657> our,<00:02:42.316> uh,<00:02:43.344> you<00:02:43.376> know,<00:02:43.585> core<00:02:43.843> team<00:02:44.148> members<00:02:46.317> here<00:02:46.655> in<00:02:46.815> the<00:02:46.960> US<00:02:47.780> as<00:02:48.005> well<00:02:48.230> as<00:02:48.990> overseas.

00:02:49.899 --> 00:02:59.690
And<00:02:49.998> then,<00:02:50.725> uh,<00:02:52.481> My<00:02:53.750> belief<00:02:54.296> in<00:02:54.874> leadership<00:02:55.419> is<00:02:56.463> everybody's<00:02:56.961> supposed<00:02:57.362> to<00:02:57.523> be<00:02:58.004> a<00:02:58.149> leader<00:02:59.128> in<00:02:59.193> my<00:02:59.433> team.

00:03:00.156 --> 00:03:07.301
Doesn't<00:03:00.413> matter<00:03:01.440> you<00:03:01.537> are<00:03:02.099> a<00:03:02.821> low-level<00:03:04.170> team<00:03:04.427> member<00:03:04.973> or<00:03:05.149> high-level<00:03:05.952> team<00:03:06.273> member.

00:03:07.718 --> 00:03:14.269
We<00:03:07.863> got<00:03:08.119> to<00:03:08.360> empower<00:03:08.858> them<00:03:09.789> to<00:03:09.886> be<00:03:10.046> leaders<00:03:11.074> in<00:03:11.314> each<00:03:11.636> areas<00:03:12.695> they<00:03:13.000> play<00:03:13.337> their<00:03:13.578> roles<00:03:14.124> in.

00:03:15.039 --> 00:03:22.716
So<00:03:15.264> that's,<00:03:16.067> I<00:03:16.211> think,<00:03:18.219> what<00:03:18.395> I<00:03:18.476> learned<00:03:18.861> over<00:03:18.974> the<00:03:19.182> years<00:03:19.745> and<00:03:20.146> how<00:03:20.869> I<00:03:21.190> managing<00:03:21.688> to<00:03:21.849> grow<00:03:22.170> our<00:03:22.395> business.

00:03:23.198 --> 00:03:24.756
What<00:03:23.295> does<00:03:23.455> a<00:03:23.535> typical<00:03:23.937> day<00:03:24.162> look<00:03:24.323> like<00:03:24.515> for<00:03:24.660> you?

00:03:25.367 --> 00:03:37.028
We,<00:03:26.105> you<00:03:26.186> know,<00:03:26.780> talking<00:03:28.210> about<00:03:28.692> coming<00:03:29.238> in,<00:03:30.266> you<00:03:30.426> know,<00:03:30.603> strategize<00:03:31.792> on<00:03:32.916> additional<00:03:34.522> product<00:03:35.004> development,<00:03:36.610> right?

00:03:37.173 --> 00:03:38.795

00:03:43.214 --> 00:03:54.905
Some<00:03:43.603> of<00:03:43.765> our<00:03:44.008> team<00:03:44.170> members<00:03:45.222> was<00:03:46.453> leading<00:03:47.004> AI<00:03:47.587> practice<00:03:48.219> for<00:03:48.397> some<00:03:49.450> global<00:03:50.406> consultancy<00:03:51.312> firms<00:03:53.310> to<00:03:53.487> drive<00:03:53.955> AI<00:03:54.293> practices.

00:04:04.706 --> 00:04:07.635
And<00:04:04.803> then<00:04:05.191> we<00:04:05.499> look<00:04:06.227> at<00:04:06.648> each<00:04:06.874> customer<00:04:07.376> case.

00:05:19.283 --> 00:05:27.680
And,<00:05:19.989> and<00:05:20.166> we<00:05:20.310> also<00:05:20.551> have<00:05:20.808> AI,<00:05:21.611> for<00:05:21.771> instance,<00:05:22.494> in,<00:05:23.281> you<00:05:23.361> know,<00:05:24.180> like,<00:05:24.726> you<00:05:24.806> know,<00:05:25.368> SAAS<00:05:27.070> capability.

00:05:27.793 --> 00:05:35.219
SAAS<00:05:28.274> capability<00:05:29.382> is<00:05:29.623> one<00:05:29.784> of<00:05:29.944> the<00:05:31.083> most<00:05:31.644> difficult<00:05:32.366> problem<00:05:32.846> to<00:05:32.991> solve<00:05:34.033> in<00:05:34.113> the<00:05:34.193> fashion<00:05:34.674> industry.

00:05:35.572 --> 00:05:49.648
So<00:05:35.796> how<00:05:36.277> you<00:05:36.357> can<00:05:37.239> deliver<00:05:38.057> the<00:05:38.778> appropriate,<00:05:40.381> the<00:05:40.542> customer<00:05:41.279> matching<00:05:41.904> size<00:05:42.626> profile<00:05:43.732> for<00:05:44.005> each<00:05:44.373> retail<00:05:44.710> location<00:05:45.752> has<00:05:45.993> been<00:05:46.954> a<00:05:47.019> Holy<00:05:47.355> Grail<00:05:47.756> of<00:05:47.852> the<00:05:47.980> challenge<00:05:48.558> for<00:05:48.702> the<00:05:48.862> retail<00:05:49.279> industry.

00:05:49.904 --> 00:05:59.539
So<00:05:50.145> we<00:05:50.401> have<00:05:51.347> AI<00:05:51.668> module<00:05:52.405> specifically<00:05:53.207> for<00:05:53.351> that<00:05:54.313> versus<00:05:54.794> right<00:05:55.034> now,<00:05:56.012> most<00:05:56.333> of<00:05:56.734> people<00:05:57.038> talk<00:05:57.231> about<00:05:57.519> AI<00:05:58.016> is<00:05:58.337> large<00:05:58.658> language<00:05:59.139> model.

00:06:00.004 --> 00:06:04.882
That's<00:06:00.181> just,<00:06:01.368> one<00:06:01.849> of<00:06:02.571> many,<00:06:02.908> many<00:06:03.534> AI<00:06:04.031> methodologies.

00:06:05.379 --> 00:06:14.879
We<00:06:05.540> do<00:06:05.716> have<00:06:05.957> that,<00:06:06.599> but<00:06:06.920> we<00:06:07.064> also<00:06:07.963> have<00:06:08.268> deployed<00:06:09.311> all<00:06:09.487> kind<00:06:09.889> of<00:06:10.193> AI<00:06:11.237> embedded<00:06:12.119> into<00:06:12.681> our<00:06:12.937> different<00:06:13.900> product<00:06:14.301> modules.

00:06:15.328 --> 00:06:21.731
Different<00:06:15.665> business<00:06:16.051> cases<00:06:17.174> may<00:06:17.736> require<00:06:18.474> different<00:06:19.116> AI<00:06:19.982> capabilities<00:06:20.865> and<00:06:21.105> algorithms.

00:06:21.844 --> 00:06:29.514
So<00:06:22.325> we've<00:06:22.582> been<00:06:23.432> aggressively<00:06:24.491> iteratively<00:06:25.438> developing<00:06:26.240> all<00:06:26.433> these<00:06:26.802> AI<00:06:27.059> capabilities<00:06:28.166> over<00:06:28.326> the<00:06:28.423> past<00:06:28.744> 25<00:06:29.369> years.

00:06:30.813 --> 00:06:31.327
That's<00:06:30.974> incredible.

00:06:31.631 --> 00:06:39.766
Are<00:06:31.776> you<00:06:32.033> shocked<00:06:32.514> by<00:06:32.819> how,<00:06:33.380> uh,<00:06:33.701> the<00:06:33.797> growth<00:06:34.118> of<00:06:34.263> it<00:06:34.439> and<00:06:34.584> how<00:06:34.824> the<00:06:34.920> wide<00:06:35.177> adoption<00:06:35.642> of<00:06:35.739> it<00:06:35.819> now<00:06:36.204> and<00:06:36.268> how<00:06:36.445> it's,<00:06:37.167> it's<00:06:37.407> the<00:06:37.504> number<00:06:37.873> one<00:06:38.033> topic<00:06:38.370> everyone<00:06:38.611> in<00:06:38.691> the<00:06:38.835> world<00:06:39.028> is<00:06:39.172> talking<00:06:39.509> about?

Like,<00:06:40.536> is<00:06:40.841> it—<00:06:41.017> what<00:06:41.129> do<00:06:41.242> you<00:06:41.338> think<00:06:41.579> of<00:06:41.659> it<00:06:41.819> as<00:06:41.916> a<00:06:41.980> technology?

00:06:43.007 --> 00:06:45.092
Yeah,<00:06:43.247> I<00:06:43.344> think<00:06:43.568> it's<00:06:43.745> a<00:06:43.889> great<00:06:44.226> thing<00:06:44.611> for<00:06:44.932> us.

So<00:07:22.376> right<00:07:22.617> now,<00:07:23.130> it's<00:07:23.339> actually<00:07:23.837> a<00:07:23.997> great<00:07:24.303> time<00:07:25.587> for<00:07:25.699> companies<00:07:26.229> like<00:07:26.631> us<00:07:27.209> who<00:07:27.353> have<00:07:27.771> invested<00:07:28.429> in<00:07:28.509> AI<00:07:29.360> over<00:07:29.601> a<00:07:29.682> long<00:07:29.922> period<00:07:30.179> of<00:07:30.324> time.

00:07:30.966 --> 00:07:44.646
So<00:07:31.528> I<00:07:31.929> think<00:07:33.150> we<00:07:33.375> are<00:07:33.631> looking<00:07:34.017> at<00:07:34.338> AI<00:07:36.843> in<00:07:38.770> very<00:07:38.994> different<00:07:39.396> ways<00:07:39.894> than<00:07:40.761> 2<00:07:41.001> years<00:07:41.194> ago,<00:07:41.499> 5<00:07:41.804> years<00:07:41.997> ago,<00:07:42.703> with<00:07:43.008> all<00:07:43.265> these<00:07:43.587> new<00:07:43.908> methodologies.

00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:46.300
Made<00:07:45.256> available<00:07:45.899> to<00:07:46.059> us.

00:07:46.974 --> 00:08:08.922
So<00:07:48.146> not<00:07:48.323> only<00:07:50.073> made<00:07:50.731> the<00:07:51.454> industry<00:07:52.256> and<00:07:52.722> the<00:07:52.899> world<00:07:53.862> more<00:07:54.247> receptive<00:07:54.970> to<00:07:55.130> AI,<00:07:55.949> also<00:07:56.511> for<00:07:56.816> technology<00:07:57.378> companies<00:07:58.518> to<00:07:58.678> have<00:07:59.160> additional<00:08:00.284> options<00:08:01.873> at<00:08:02.435> our<00:08:05.261> fingertip<00:08:06.128> to<00:08:06.369> improve<00:08:07.573> the<00:08:07.669> technology<00:08:08.456> offerings.

00:08:09.435 --> 00:08:11.041
So<00:08:09.676> it's<00:08:09.933> a<00:08:10.061> great<00:08:10.318> thing<00:08:10.623> for<00:08:10.800> us.

00:08:11.586 --> 00:08:12.820
Yeah,<00:08:11.907> that's<00:08:12.404> incredible.

00:08:12.885 --> 00:08:15.930
Yeah,<00:08:13.430> I<00:08:13.670> could<00:08:13.766> see<00:08:13.991> how<00:08:14.087> that<00:08:14.231> would<00:08:14.327> be<00:08:14.632> useful<00:08:15.129> for<00:08:15.369> you,<00:08:15.610> right?

00:08:16.555 --> 00:08:20.980
As<00:08:17.774> you've<00:08:18.094> been<00:08:18.319> working<00:08:18.639> on<00:08:18.671> it<00:08:18.800> for<00:08:18.896> so<00:08:19.056> long<00:08:19.457> and<00:08:19.521> now<00:08:19.681> the<00:08:19.777> whole<00:08:19.938> world<00:08:20.274> is<00:08:20.419> catching<00:08:20.803> up.

00:08:21.204 --> 00:08:22.102
That's<00:08:21.845> right.

00:08:22.406 --> 00:08:22.599
Yeah.

00:08:22.727 --> 00:08:24.891
And<00:08:23.047> I<00:08:23.865> wouldn't<00:08:24.186> call<00:08:24.282> catch<00:08:24.731> up.

00:08:25.051 --> 00:08:29.299
It<00:08:25.388> made<00:08:26.590> the<00:08:26.895> awareness<00:08:28.209> stronger,<00:08:29.059> right?

00:08:29.876 --> 00:08:34.637
Made<00:08:30.197> people<00:08:31.223> to<00:08:31.463> really<00:08:32.585> thinking<00:08:33.707> what<00:08:33.964> they<00:08:34.124> should<00:08:34.429> do.

00:08:35.086 --> 00:08:43.318
Give<00:08:35.310> you<00:08:35.423> an<00:08:35.551> example,<00:08:36.513> in<00:08:36.609> the<00:08:36.753> retail<00:08:37.250> industry,<00:08:38.132> One<00:08:38.437> of<00:08:38.533> the<00:08:38.790> biggest<00:08:39.882> challenges<00:08:40.620> has<00:08:40.942> been<00:08:41.825> everybody<00:08:42.387> use<00:08:42.868> Excel.

00:08:43.848 --> 00:08:50.303
I'm<00:08:44.073> not<00:08:44.249> saying<00:08:44.779> Excel<00:08:45.197> is<00:08:45.357> not<00:08:45.534> a<00:08:45.662> good<00:08:45.903> tool,<00:08:46.882> but<00:08:47.766> Excel<00:08:48.328> has<00:08:48.825> some<00:08:49.692> problems.

00:08:50.881 --> 00:09:00.595
People<00:08:51.924> have<00:08:52.342> different<00:08:52.727> versions<00:08:53.931> and<00:08:54.172> is<00:08:54.429> error-prone<00:08:55.858> and<00:08:56.597> doesn't<00:08:57.159> give<00:08:57.560> the<00:08:57.705> corporations<00:08:59.310> a<00:08:59.471> unified<00:09:00.290> view.

00:09:01.012 --> 00:09:09.036
But<00:09:01.333> with<00:09:01.719> AI,<00:09:02.843> if<00:09:03.100> you<00:09:03.630> live<00:09:04.063> with<00:09:04.384> Excel<00:09:05.105> all<00:09:05.186> day<00:09:05.346> long,<00:09:06.710> you<00:09:06.854> are<00:09:06.950> not<00:09:07.672> getting<00:09:08.057> closer<00:09:08.715> to<00:09:08.940> AI.

00:09:09.517 --> 00:09:21.389
So<00:09:09.838> the<00:09:09.918> first<00:09:10.881> people<00:09:11.025> have<00:09:11.202> to<00:09:11.426> think<00:09:12.228> how<00:09:12.485> to<00:09:12.726> really<00:09:13.047> move<00:09:13.512> on<00:09:13.768> to<00:09:14.154> a<00:09:14.635> systematic<00:09:15.293> approach<00:09:16.496> versus<00:09:18.036> disconnected<00:09:19.287> information<00:09:20.426> flow,<00:09:21.068> right?

00:09:21.774 --> 00:09:24.565
You<00:09:21.854> know,<00:09:22.030> Excel<00:09:22.512> create<00:09:23.555> data<00:09:23.875> silos.

00:09:24.934 --> 00:09:46.612
So<00:09:25.800> this<00:09:26.105> way,<00:09:26.282> you<00:09:27.084> know,<00:09:27.710> it<00:09:28.030> actually<00:09:29.234> help<00:09:30.517> individual<00:09:31.174> businesses<00:09:32.472> to<00:09:32.681> have<00:09:33.514> another,<00:09:34.845> you<00:09:34.941> know,<00:09:35.839> a<00:09:35.903> try<00:09:36.961> to<00:09:37.169> embrace<00:09:38.532> information<00:09:39.414> highway<00:09:40.135> versus,<00:09:41.915> you<00:09:41.995> know,<00:09:42.171> stay<00:09:42.780> with<00:09:43.181> all<00:09:43.293> the<00:09:44.961> data<00:09:45.281> silos<00:09:45.986> and<00:09:46.227> islands.

00:09:47.045 --> 00:09:47.237
Right.

00:09:47.365 --> 00:09:48.648
Yeah,<00:09:47.846> that<00:09:48.006> makes<00:09:48.359> sense.

00:09:48.952 --> 00:09:55.765
How<00:09:49.113> do<00:09:49.193> you<00:09:49.353> think<00:09:49.674> about<00:09:50.796> managing<00:09:51.373> your<00:09:51.533> day-to-day<00:09:52.094> life,<00:09:52.479> your<00:09:52.655> health,<00:09:53.361> and<00:09:53.697> just<00:09:53.922> finding<00:09:54.258> overall<00:09:54.884> life<00:09:55.220> balance?

00:09:55.830 --> 00:10:10.605
Yeah,<00:09:56.364> so<00:09:58.354> you<00:09:58.452> can<00:09:58.630> see<00:09:59.973> after<00:10:00.313> 26<00:10:00.960> years,<00:10:01.446> I'm<00:10:01.591> still<00:10:02.012> very<00:10:02.336> enthusiastic<00:10:04.181> about<00:10:05.006> the<00:10:05.168> business,<00:10:05.734> about<00:10:06.058> the<00:10:06.220> industry,<00:10:07.595> because<00:10:08.064> you<00:10:08.242> really<00:10:08.793> enjoy<00:10:09.294> what<00:10:09.521> you<00:10:09.618> do,<00:10:10.330> right?

00:10:10.815 --> 00:10:12.029
And<00:10:11.236> how<00:10:11.398> to<00:10:11.559> balance?

00:10:12.757 --> 00:10:28.789
I<00:10:13.242> do<00:10:13.420> a<00:10:13.550> lot<00:10:13.840> of<00:10:15.260> outdoor<00:10:16.664> sports<00:10:17.680> activities<00:10:18.988> that<00:10:19.149> keep<00:10:19.391> myself,<00:10:20.504> you<00:10:20.601> know,<00:10:21.311> active<00:10:21.957> and<00:10:22.037> the<00:10:22.134> brain<00:10:22.538> power<00:10:23.886> Always<00:10:24.207> try<00:10:24.463> to<00:10:24.623> maintain<00:10:25.745> brain<00:10:25.985> power<00:10:27.267> at<00:10:27.347> the<00:10:27.427> highest<00:10:27.892> possible<00:10:28.309> level.

00:10:29.174 --> 00:10:32.683
And<00:10:30.216> you<00:10:30.857> do<00:10:31.578> a<00:10:31.658> lot<00:10:31.914> of<00:10:32.058> different<00:10:32.395> things.

00:10:33.036 --> 00:10:43.452
I<00:10:33.340> read,<00:10:35.504> I<00:10:35.760> travel,<00:10:36.962> go<00:10:37.138> to<00:10:37.282> see<00:10:37.603> different<00:10:38.468> part<00:10:38.661> of<00:10:38.789> the<00:10:38.885> world,<00:10:39.686> network<00:10:40.391> with<00:10:41.913> all<00:10:42.010> different<00:10:42.955> thoughts.

00:10:43.933 --> 00:10:47.842
So<00:10:44.157> that<00:10:44.413> way<00:10:44.814> you<00:10:44.958> keep<00:10:45.118> yourself<00:10:46.096> stimulated<00:10:47.282> all<00:10:47.314> the<00:10:47.458> time.

00:10:48.259 --> 00:10:55.400
And<00:10:50.006> Family<00:10:50.889> is<00:10:51.322> another<00:10:52.254> big<00:10:52.751> drive<00:10:53.393> for<00:10:53.538> us<00:10:53.795> to<00:10:54.662> work<00:10:54.758> hard,<00:10:55.240> right?

00:10:55.561 --> 00:11:05.482
So,<00:10:56.347> uh,<00:10:56.925> you<00:10:57.022> know,<00:10:57.166> that's<00:10:57.423> another<00:10:57.808> motivation<00:10:59.317> to—<00:10:59.414> so<00:10:59.654> that,<00:11:00.216> you<00:11:00.313> know,<00:11:00.682> our<00:11:01.003> work<00:11:02.127> can<00:11:02.448> actually<00:11:03.491> benefit<00:11:04.631> our<00:11:04.872> families.

00:11:06.076 --> 00:11:11.261
So<00:11:06.236> I,<00:11:06.541> I<00:11:06.702> think<00:11:06.959> that<00:11:07.681> not<00:11:07.906> only<00:11:08.082> for<00:11:08.243> myself,<00:11:09.592> for<00:11:09.913> all<00:11:10.234> our<00:11:10.651> team<00:11:10.876> members.

00:11:11.759 --> 00:11:14.873
What<00:11:11.855> do<00:11:11.919> you<00:11:12.080> read<00:11:12.802> and<00:11:12.963> what<00:11:13.204> reading<00:11:13.444> recommendations<00:11:14.167> would<00:11:14.279> you<00:11:14.343> have<00:11:14.504> for<00:11:14.664> us?

00:11:15.387 --> 00:11:26.235
Yeah,<00:11:15.563> so<00:11:16.029> first<00:11:16.430> of<00:11:16.575> all,<00:11:16.976> uh,<00:11:17.458> I,<00:11:17.779> I<00:11:17.859> read<00:11:18.277> a<00:11:18.437> lot<00:11:19.063> about<00:11:20.347> the<00:11:20.507> latest<00:11:22.064> scientific<00:11:23.331> development,<00:11:24.133> especially<00:11:24.855> in<00:11:25.096> AI,<00:11:25.898> right?

00:11:26.796 --> 00:11:41.348
So<00:11:27.647> looking<00:11:27.968> ahead,<00:11:28.866> you<00:11:28.946> know,<00:11:29.331> what<00:11:29.812> may<00:11:30.133> come,<00:11:31.818> the<00:11:31.978> current<00:11:32.395> large<00:11:32.732> language<00:11:33.182> model,<00:11:33.920> you<00:11:34.016> know,<00:11:34.305> led<00:11:34.722> by<00:11:35.524> OpenAI<00:11:36.551> and<00:11:36.807> many<00:11:37.192> other<00:11:37.369> firms,<00:11:38.813> I<00:11:39.037> believe<00:11:39.438> still<00:11:40.160> at<00:11:40.273> a<00:11:40.337> very<00:11:40.722> early<00:11:40.914> stage.

00:11:41.925 --> 00:11:46.353
People<00:11:42.166> talk<00:11:42.422> about<00:11:42.968> current<00:11:43.289> AI<00:11:44.428> is<00:11:44.588> equivalent<00:11:45.134> to<00:11:45.294> a<00:11:45.310> 7-year-old.

00:11:46.738 --> 00:12:01.150
So<00:11:47.300> what<00:11:47.540> will<00:11:47.781> be<00:11:48.423> in<00:11:48.503> the<00:11:48.583> future<00:11:49.562> to<00:11:49.804> match<00:11:52.456> a<00:11:52.472> teenager<00:11:53.668> and<00:11:53.765> to<00:11:53.911> match<00:11:57.062> a<00:11:58.517> mid-age<00:11:59.405> intelligent<00:12:00.795> level.

00:12:01.457 --> 00:12:10.751
So,<00:12:01.926> and<00:12:02.249> another<00:12:02.572> thing<00:12:02.734> I<00:12:02.879> read<00:12:03.122> a<00:12:03.219> lot<00:12:03.607> is<00:12:04.093> about<00:12:05.470> the<00:12:05.567> geopolitical<00:12:06.393> environment,<00:12:07.106> what<00:12:07.349> that<00:12:07.673> will<00:12:07.997> lead<00:12:08.645> the<00:12:08.823> economy<00:12:09.763> to,<00:12:10.411> right?

00:12:10.897 --> 00:12:23.539
So,<00:12:11.399> and<00:12:11.480> the<00:12:11.610> current,<00:12:12.605> everybody<00:12:13.029> knows<00:12:14.172> the<00:12:14.270> tariff<00:12:15.151> subject,<00:12:15.992> right,<00:12:16.376> what<00:12:16.552> that<00:12:16.793> could<00:12:17.257> impact<00:12:18.539> each<00:12:19.341> area,<00:12:19.997> you<00:12:20.158> know,<00:12:20.494> in<00:12:20.638> terms<00:12:21.023> of<00:12:21.119> technology<00:12:21.936> as<00:12:22.161> well<00:12:22.481> as<00:12:23.042> trade.

00:12:23.843 --> 00:12:27.240
So<00:12:23.939> I<00:12:23.987> also<00:12:24.404> read<00:12:24.628> a<00:12:24.644> lot<00:12:25.205> about<00:12:26.567> management.

00:12:27.288 --> 00:12:34.371
So<00:12:27.769> there's<00:12:27.977> a,<00:12:28.073> there's<00:12:29.131> a<00:12:29.275> book,<00:12:29.676> there's<00:12:30.012> quite<00:12:30.269> a<00:12:30.397> few<00:12:30.637> books<00:12:31.198> I,<00:12:31.759> you<00:12:31.855> know,<00:12:32.961> uh,<00:12:33.361> uh,<00:12:33.778> recommend.

00:12:34.419 --> 00:12:48.383
For<00:12:34.499> instance,<00:12:35.380> a<00:12:35.460> book<00:12:35.781> called<00:12:36.582> Low<00:12:36.806> How<00:12:37.688> written<00:12:38.024> by<00:12:38.905> Ron<00:12:39.226> Charan,<00:12:40.732> uh,<00:12:41.213> and<00:12:41.453> also,<00:12:42.415> uh,<00:12:44.127> Winning,<00:12:44.950> I<00:12:45.095> think<00:12:45.514> by<00:12:47.770> Jack<00:12:48.077> Welch.

00:12:49.221 --> 00:12:54.594
And<00:12:49.366> a<00:12:49.447> lot<00:12:49.689> of<00:12:49.802> these<00:12:50.833> books<00:12:51.542> I<00:12:51.623> recommend<00:12:52.348> to<00:12:52.929> my<00:12:53.090> team<00:12:53.300> members<00:12:54.044> over<00:12:54.157> the<00:12:54.383> years.

00:12:54.950 --> 00:13:03.777
So<00:12:57.376> we<00:12:58.120> try<00:12:58.428> to<00:12:58.654> do<00:12:58.816> better<00:12:59.479> with<00:12:59.786> our<00:12:59.964> day-to-day<00:13:00.692> management<00:13:01.906> and<00:13:02.132> also<00:13:02.617> the<00:13:02.713> company<00:13:03.261> culture.

00:13:04.067 --> 00:13:08.175
And<00:13:04.486> those<00:13:04.792> books<00:13:05.597> sometimes<00:13:07.047> like<00:13:07.289> our<00:13:07.788> textbook.

00:13:08.550 --> 00:13:20.242
You<00:13:08.598> know,<00:13:08.806> we<00:13:08.887> can<00:13:09.047> go<00:13:09.208> reference<00:13:10.252> how<00:13:10.429> people,<00:13:11.071> you<00:13:11.553> know,<00:13:11.955> succeeded<00:13:12.613> in<00:13:12.838> certain<00:13:13.304> areas<00:13:14.428> of<00:13:14.749> their<00:13:15.006> business<00:13:15.327> development,<00:13:16.195> their,<00:13:17.239> you<00:13:17.271> know,<00:13:18.700> company<00:13:19.744> culture.

00:13:20.483 --> 00:13:22.764
So<00:13:20.708> those<00:13:21.013> kind<00:13:21.270> of<00:13:21.591> books<00:13:22.073> I<00:13:22.218> read<00:13:22.475> a<00:13:22.555> lot.

00:13:23.262 --> 00:13:25.414
How<00:13:23.439> are<00:13:23.583> you<00:13:23.679> feeling<00:13:24.017> about<00:13:24.386> the<00:13:24.418> state<00:13:24.723> of<00:13:24.804> the<00:13:24.948> economy?

00:13:26.474 --> 00:13:28.916
How<00:13:26.651> is<00:13:27.052> the<00:13:27.213> tariffs<00:13:27.679> or<00:13:27.711> anything<00:13:27.968> like<00:13:28.096> that<00:13:28.241> affecting<00:13:28.659> you?

00:13:29.542 --> 00:13:32.353
What's<00:13:30.345> your<00:13:30.650> overall<00:13:30.971> outlook<00:13:31.389> for<00:13:31.534> the<00:13:31.614> rest<00:13:31.758> of<00:13:31.935> this<00:13:32.112> year?

00:13:32.754 --> 00:13:34.296
Yeah,<00:13:32.995> we<00:13:33.156> are<00:13:33.316> doing<00:13:33.702> really<00:13:34.039> well.

00:13:34.650 --> 00:13:37.655
So<00:13:35.088> I<00:13:35.186> guess<00:13:35.900> we<00:13:36.063> are<00:13:36.242> not<00:13:36.713> in<00:13:36.875> particular<00:13:37.476> trade.

00:13:40.090 --> 00:13:52.175
So<00:13:40.446> we<00:13:40.754> help<00:13:41.241> people<00:13:41.760> to<00:13:41.906> become<00:13:43.349> smarter<00:13:44.743> with<00:13:44.986> their<00:13:45.295> trade<00:13:45.878> decisions<00:13:47.240> in<00:13:47.273> some<00:13:47.630> way<00:13:48.468> to<00:13:48.677> mitigate<00:13:49.902> some<00:13:50.225> of<00:13:50.418> the<00:13:51.772> risks.

00:13:52.417 --> 00:14:01.320
So<00:13:52.884> for<00:13:53.045> instance,<00:13:53.867> because<00:13:54.512> of<00:13:54.673> the<00:13:55.076> potential<00:13:55.770> tariff<00:13:56.776> impact,<00:13:57.749> people<00:13:58.058> have<00:13:58.317> to<00:13:59.940> reduce<00:14:00.654> their<00:14:00.914> risks.

00:14:02.634 --> 00:14:07.977
By<00:14:03.918> lowering<00:14:05.907> unproductive<00:14:07.464> inventory.

00:14:08.314 --> 00:14:14.876
So<00:14:09.293> that's<00:14:09.854> the<00:14:10.015> reason<00:14:10.496> probably<00:14:11.218> why<00:14:11.699> we<00:14:11.779> got<00:14:11.940> a<00:14:12.325> lot<00:14:12.662> of<00:14:12.967> inbound<00:14:13.625> calls<00:14:14.411> these<00:14:14.587> days.

00:14:15.470 --> 00:14:23.267
I<00:14:15.550> guess<00:14:16.256> our<00:14:16.368> sales<00:14:16.833> team<00:14:17.074> is<00:14:17.299> busy<00:14:17.700> writing<00:14:18.117> orders<00:14:19.079> because<00:14:20.523> they<00:14:20.908> have<00:14:21.165> to<00:14:21.326> entertain<00:14:22.192> all<00:14:22.352> kind<00:14:22.625> of<00:14:22.834> inquiries.

00:14:23.395 --> 00:14:31.327
And<00:14:23.572> over<00:14:23.748> the<00:14:23.957> years<00:14:25.256> we<00:14:25.481> have<00:14:27.487> accomplished<00:14:28.933> the<00:14:29.013> reputation<00:14:30.395> in<00:14:30.540> the<00:14:30.733> industry.

00:14:31.745 --> 00:14:42.383
So<00:14:31.906> there's<00:14:32.099> a<00:14:32.324> lot<00:14:32.661> of<00:14:32.966> word<00:14:33.143> of<00:14:33.352> mouth,<00:14:34.477> and<00:14:34.879> people<00:14:35.361> heard<00:14:35.618> about<00:14:36.084> us<00:14:37.144> from<00:14:38.012> previous<00:14:38.751> users,<00:14:39.394> from<00:14:39.956> previous<00:14:40.438> customers<00:14:41.161> or<00:14:41.322> existing<00:14:41.868> customers.

00:14:42.688 --> 00:14:46.914
So<00:14:43.331> for<00:14:43.636> us,<00:14:44.439> you<00:14:44.536> know,<00:14:44.922> I<00:14:45.082> think<00:14:45.821> so<00:14:46.127> far<00:14:46.303> so<00:14:46.544> good.

00:14:47.268 --> 00:14:59.797
We<00:14:47.364> don't<00:14:47.509> know<00:14:47.750> what's<00:14:47.975> coming<00:14:48.971> a<00:14:49.019> couple<00:14:49.260> months<00:14:49.598> down<00:14:49.758> the<00:14:49.903> road,<00:14:50.465> but<00:14:51.188> I<00:14:51.285> believe<00:14:51.911> technology<00:14:53.360> will<00:14:53.537> be<00:14:53.844> an<00:14:53.941> important<00:14:54.505> tool<00:14:55.699> for<00:14:55.957> businesses<00:14:57.797> to<00:14:57.974> better<00:14:58.926> weather<00:14:59.184> the<00:14:59.281> storm.

00:15:00.136 --> 00:15:00.217
Yeah.

00:15:01.040 --> 00:15:08.807
Finally,<00:15:01.588> uh,<00:15:01.846> we<00:15:02.008> end<00:15:02.250> every<00:15:02.460> interview<00:15:02.829> with<00:15:02.974> the<00:15:03.054> same<00:15:03.295> question,<00:15:03.761> and<00:15:03.841> that<00:15:04.034> is<00:15:04.179> at<00:15:04.259> CEO.com,<00:15:05.047> we<00:15:05.207> believe<00:15:05.384> the<00:15:05.529> chances<00:15:06.011> one<00:15:06.268> gives<00:15:06.895> is<00:15:06.991> just<00:15:07.200> as<00:15:07.328> important<00:15:07.634> as<00:15:07.698> the<00:15:07.794> chances<00:15:08.196> one<00:15:08.357> takes.

00:15:09.080 --> 00:15:12.087
When<00:15:09.305> you<00:15:09.546> hear<00:15:09.723> that,<00:15:09.964> who<00:15:10.124> gave<00:15:10.349> you<00:15:10.510> a<00:15:10.526> chance<00:15:10.848> to<00:15:10.992> get<00:15:11.089> you<00:15:11.233> to<00:15:11.314> where<00:15:11.490> you<00:15:11.651> are<00:15:11.780> today?

00:15:12.361 --> 00:15:12.636
Yeah.

00:15:12.717 --> 00:15:20.903
So<00:15:16.013> one<00:15:16.256> of<00:15:16.482> my<00:15:17.371> early<00:15:17.807> investors,<00:15:18.825> his<00:15:19.148> name<00:15:19.552> is<00:15:19.860> Alan<00:15:20.290> Patrickoff.

00:15:21.085 --> 00:15:22.757
So<00:15:21.134> the<00:15:21.167> company<00:15:21.449> right<00:15:21.532> now<00:15:21.648> is<00:15:21.714> very<00:15:21.863> famous,<00:15:22.045> called<00:15:22.210> Apex,<00:15:22.492> A-P-E-X.

00:15:25.002 --> 00:15:25.260
APAX.

00:15:25.712 --> 00:15:25.955
Yeah.

00:15:26.052 --> 00:15:29.847
That's<00:15:26.375> for<00:15:26.601> his<00:15:26.778> name,<00:15:27.247> Alan<00:15:27.489> Patrickoff<00:15:28.474> Associates<00:15:29.152> Cross<00:15:29.443> Border.

00:15:30.331 --> 00:15:33.451
He<00:15:30.477> has<00:15:30.735> been,<00:15:32.011> you<00:15:32.092> know,<00:15:32.350> my<00:15:32.480> biggest<00:15:32.917> mentor.

00:15:33.629 --> 00:15:40.621
Also,<00:15:35.166> he<00:15:35.344> supported<00:15:36.218> us<00:15:38.258> during<00:15:38.581> those<00:15:38.986> most<00:15:39.714> difficult<00:15:40.200> time.

00:15:41.090 --> 00:15:50.218
