# The document Veer Gidwaney keeps rereading

Every couple of weeks, Veer Gidwaney rereads a two-page document. He wrote it with his co-founder after they sold their last company, on the advice of an advisor who told them to sit down and record what they had learned before they forgot it. "It reminds me of lessons learned along the way," Gidwaney told the CEO.com Podcast. "It's something that we actually share with all of our new employees as they onboard here at Ansel."

The company they sold was Maxwell Health, a benefits platform Gidwaney co-founded and ran until [Sun Life Financial acquired it in 2018](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/sun-life-financial-acquires-maxwell-health-300659355.html?ref=ceo.com), the year after it ranked No. 100 on [Deloitte's Technology Fast 500](https://www.deloitte.com/content/dam/assets-zone3/us/en/docs/events/2017/us-tmt-fast500-2017-winners-brochure.pdf?ref=ceo.com). Most founders take an exit like that and write a victory lap. Gidwaney wrote a list of mistakes. "Nothing is ever a total failure or a total success," he said. "Being humble enough to just look back and say, okay, what did we learn from this, I think is really important."

Then he started again. [Ansel Health](https://www.joinansel.com/?ref=ceo.com), his third company, sells supplemental health insurance that covers more than 13,000 conditions and pays cash on diagnosis, with no accident or hospitalization requirements. The problem it addresses is not abstract. More than 100 million Americans carry health care debt they cannot pay, according to [an investigation by KFF Health News and NPR](https://kffhealthnews.org/health-care-costs/diagnosis-debt-investigation-100-million-americans-hidden-medical-debt/?ref=ceo.com). Gidwaney can explain how they got there in three sentences.

Premiums went up while quality did not. Deductibles reached $3,000 or $4,000 per family. "If you have an unforeseen medical event where you need to pay $3,000 or $4,000, a lot of people don't have that money available to them as liquid cash," he said. The bills that follow a diagnosis are not all medical, either. Childcare, a car service, time away from work. He is clear that a product cannot fix all of this. "At some level, there needs to be legislative involvement to drive the sorts of changes that we fundamentally need. But in the meantime, the question is what can we do as innovators, as entrepreneurs, to bring solutions to the market that help people out."

The lessons document shows up everywhere in how he runs the place. Ansel has four values: hardworking, helpful, humble, high standards. New hires get the document because the values mean nothing without the record of where they came from. The humility is not decorative. Asked how his friends would describe him, Gidwaney admitted he had never asked them. "I hope it's those four things. And if it's not, then I've got some work to do."

The discipline extends to what the company refuses to do. Gidwaney spends much of his day killing projects, not advancing them. "Some projects shouldn't move forward because they're not the right use of energy," he said. Ansel automated three-quarters of its claims before using any artificial intelligence, by building a simple product and getting access to the right data. AI came later, and internally first, because in insurance every dollar saved on operations is a dollar that can go back to policyholders. "In many ways insurance is a contract and math," he said.

The approach attracted capital and then a buyer. Ansel [raised $20 million led by Portage in January 2024](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20240123209800/en/Ansel-Raises-%2420M-to-Bring-Simpler-Supplemental-Insurance-to-Americans-Nationwide?ref=ceo.com), bringing its total raised past $50 million, and in November 2025 [Renaissance completed its acquisition of the company](https://renaissancebenefits.com/news/renaissance-completes-acquisition-of-ansel-health-accelerating-innovation-in-supplemental-health-benefits/?ref=ceo.com), whose technology powers RenSecureHealth, the supplemental plan the two companies launched during a year of collaboration before the deal.

Gidwaney is in his mid-forties now. He says building a company at this age is different than it was in his twenties, mostly in the amplitude. "You just learn to not be too high with the highs and not be too low with the lows." His life outside work is deliberately narrow: the business and his family, nothing else. He reads fiction on audio at one-and-a-half speed while driving his daughter to soccer, Kafka's The Trial at the moment.

The habit of writing things down has a prehistory. Gidwaney's first company started when he and his brother dropped out of school in Edmonton, Alberta, in the late nineties, far from any center of venture capital. Their fundraising strategy was to call investors until one called back. One finally agreed to a meeting, Gidwaney suspects, mainly to get rid of them. That meeting produced their first million dollars. Twenty-five years later, the man is still his mentor. Gidwaney now mentors the man's kids, and the man's kids mentor Gidwaney's. "That individual definitely took a chance on my co-founder brother and me," he said. "And it had a big impact." Some lessons you write down. Some you spend 25 years repaying.

00:00:13.397 --> 00:00:13.990
Let's<00:00:13.557> start<00:00:13.878> there.

00:00:14.054 --> 00:00:16.506
Let's<00:00:14.279> start<00:00:14.439> with<00:00:14.551> how<00:00:14.679> you<00:00:14.775> became<00:00:15.096> the<00:00:15.176> founder<00:00:15.545> and<00:00:15.593> CEO<00:00:15.961> of<00:00:16.041> Ansel<00:00:16.282> Health.

00:00:16.923 --> 00:00:18.077
Yeah,<00:00:17.083> well,<00:00:17.179> thanks<00:00:17.484> for<00:00:17.564> having<00:00:17.740> me,<00:00:17.884> Clint.

00:00:18.125 --> 00:00:19.038
It's<00:00:18.237> a<00:00:18.301> pleasure<00:00:18.558> to<00:00:18.686> be<00:00:18.846> here.

00:00:19.567 --> 00:00:27.436
You<00:00:19.615> know,<00:00:19.727> I've<00:00:19.824> been<00:00:19.920> an<00:00:20.048> entrepreneur<00:00:20.561> for,<00:00:21.250> for<00:00:21.811> quite<00:00:21.987> some<00:00:22.308> time<00:00:22.628> now<00:00:22.868> since<00:00:23.173> I<00:00:23.189> dropped<00:00:23.493> out<00:00:23.590> of<00:00:23.622> school,<00:00:24.070> and,<00:00:24.936> and<00:00:25.096> Ansel<00:00:25.497> was<00:00:26.314> or<00:00:26.458> is<00:00:26.699> my<00:00:26.859> third<00:00:27.099> company.

00:00:28.221 --> 00:00:36.860
And,<00:00:28.622> and<00:00:29.038> the<00:00:29.119> problem<00:00:29.439> we're<00:00:29.519> solving<00:00:29.904> was<00:00:30.000> just<00:00:30.224> something<00:00:30.481> that<00:00:31.010> our<00:00:31.610> team<00:00:31.910> here<00:00:32.270> felt<00:00:32.510> was<00:00:33.130> important<00:00:33.830> to<00:00:34.150> solve,<00:00:34.670> and<00:00:34.850> we<00:00:35.070> wanted<00:00:35.310> to<00:00:35.490> devote<00:00:35.670> our<00:00:35.890> energy<00:00:36.110> to<00:00:36.310> it.

00:00:36.970 --> 00:00:42.590
And<00:00:36.990> our<00:00:37.270> mission<00:00:37.570> here<00:00:37.770> at<00:00:38.130> Ansel<00:00:38.131> is<00:00:38.230> to<00:00:38.430> make<00:00:38.670> sure<00:00:38.890> that<00:00:39.950> health<00:00:40.410> distress<00:00:40.850> doesn't<00:00:41.190> result<00:00:41.550> in<00:00:41.730> a<00:00:41.830> financial<00:00:42.150> burden.

00:00:42.590 --> 00:00:45.510
And<00:00:43.130> that's<00:00:43.750> the<00:00:44.170> problem<00:00:44.450> we're<00:00:44.590> working<00:00:44.790> on.

00:00:45.510 --> 00:00:47.050
So<00:00:45.670> what<00:00:45.890> keeps<00:00:46.170> you<00:00:46.330> up<00:00:46.490> at<00:00:46.710> night?

00:00:47.050 --> 00:00:52.090
There's<00:00:47.410> lots<00:00:47.690> that<00:00:47.850> keeps<00:00:48.010> me<00:00:48.170> up<00:00:48.310> at<00:00:48.570> night,<00:00:48.890> figuratively<00:00:49.630> speaking,<00:00:50.170> although<00:00:50.290> I<00:00:50.510> actually<00:00:50.690> sleep<00:00:51.030> quite<00:00:51.230> well,<00:00:51.490> thankfully.

00:00:52.090 --> 00:00:58.370
I<00:00:52.590> think<00:00:52.790> as<00:00:53.030> it<00:00:53.170> pertains<00:00:53.390> to<00:00:53.490> our<00:00:53.650> company,<00:00:55.150> the<00:00:55.650> most<00:00:56.310> important<00:00:56.750> thing<00:00:56.990> is<00:00:57.170> just<00:00:57.370> getting<00:00:57.550> the<00:00:57.730> word<00:00:57.870> out<00:00:58.030> there.

00:00:58.370 --> 00:01:03.484
I<00:00:58.390> mean,<00:00:58.630> I<00:00:58.631> think<00:00:58.990> we've<00:00:59.470> got<00:00:59.710> a<00:00:59.930> product<00:01:00.330> that<00:01:01.367> has<00:01:01.543> demonstrated<00:01:02.265> its<00:01:02.425> ability<00:01:02.826> to<00:01:02.906> help<00:01:03.147> people.

00:01:03.548 --> 00:01:09.497
And,<00:01:04.093> and,<00:01:04.494> um,<00:01:05.296> you<00:01:05.376> know,<00:01:05.552> the,<00:01:05.713> the<00:01:05.937> world<00:01:06.178> of<00:01:06.434> insurance<00:01:07.300> and<00:01:07.477> benefits,<00:01:08.343> uh,<00:01:08.599> is<00:01:08.824> complicated.

00:01:09.626 --> 00:01:20.435
And,<00:01:10.187> um,<00:01:10.428> you<00:01:10.524> know,<00:01:10.604> I<00:01:10.684> think<00:01:10.845> the<00:01:11.005> biggest<00:01:11.326> challenge<00:01:11.807> facing<00:01:12.593> new<00:01:12.833> entrants<00:01:13.330> with<00:01:13.651> good<00:01:13.876> ideas<00:01:14.597> is,<00:01:15.640> um,<00:01:16.041> you<00:01:16.137> know,<00:01:16.185> the<00:01:16.217> market<00:01:16.538> just<00:01:16.778> not<00:01:17.019> paying<00:01:17.179> enough<00:01:17.420> attention<00:01:17.821> to<00:01:18.061> it<00:01:18.206> and,<00:01:18.606> and,<00:01:18.927> um,<00:01:19.088> recognizing<00:01:19.745> it<00:01:19.889> for<00:01:20.002> what<00:01:20.146> it<00:01:20.290> is.

00:01:20.611 --> 00:01:24.171
So,<00:01:21.429> so<00:01:21.525> that,<00:01:21.734> that's<00:01:21.910> the<00:01:21.990> biggest<00:01:22.231> challenge<00:01:22.536> we<00:01:22.632> face<00:01:22.953> and<00:01:23.273> what<00:01:23.434> keeps<00:01:23.738> me<00:01:23.819> up<00:01:23.979> at<00:01:24.011> night.

00:01:24.235 --> 00:01:26.545
All,<00:01:24.556> you<00:01:24.652> know,<00:01:24.797> when,<00:01:25.037> when<00:01:25.198> I<00:01:25.358> am<00:01:25.583> up,<00:01:25.823> that's<00:01:26.064> the<00:01:26.160> reason.

00:01:26.946 --> 00:01:33.402
Give<00:01:27.042> me<00:01:27.202> a<00:01:27.282> sense,<00:01:28.003> or<00:01:28.484> give<00:01:28.660> the<00:01:28.788> audience<00:01:29.141> a<00:01:29.189> sense<00:01:29.461> as<00:01:29.589> well,<00:01:29.765> as<00:01:30.086> what<00:01:30.246> we<00:01:30.390> mean<00:01:30.631> by<00:01:30.743> supplemental<00:01:31.528> healthcare<00:01:32.553> in<00:01:32.649> this<00:01:32.890> platform.

00:01:33.595 --> 00:01:39.427
Let's<00:01:33.755> go<00:01:33.835> a<00:01:33.915> little<00:01:34.075> bit<00:01:34.171> deeper<00:01:34.396> on<00:01:34.428> that<00:01:34.572> just<00:01:34.716> so<00:01:34.812> people<00:01:35.357> have<00:01:35.469> an<00:01:35.597> understanding<00:01:36.559> of<00:01:36.815> exactly<00:01:37.376> the<00:01:37.456> best<00:01:37.840> way<00:01:38.177> to<00:01:38.337> engage<00:01:38.818> with<00:01:39.058> Ansel<00:01:39.282> Health.

00:01:40.003 --> 00:01:44.922
Yeah,<00:01:40.260> so<00:01:40.580> let's<00:01:40.917> start<00:01:41.125> off<00:01:41.301> by<00:01:41.381> discussing<00:01:41.926> health<00:01:42.102> insurance<00:01:42.887> more<00:01:43.064> broadly<00:01:43.464> before<00:01:44.105> you<00:01:44.265> supplement<00:01:44.842> it.

00:01:44.970 --> 00:01:46.652
Let's<00:01:45.323> get<00:01:45.531> to<00:01:45.691> the<00:01:46.108> core<00:01:46.412> of<00:01:46.572> it.

00:01:47.389 --> 00:01:55.977
Most<00:01:47.630> folks<00:01:47.950> have<00:01:48.671> health<00:01:48.912> insurance<00:01:49.376> through<00:01:49.536> their<00:01:49.713> employer,<00:01:50.978> and<00:01:51.972> it's<00:01:52.500> a<00:01:52.917> big<00:01:53.077> portion<00:01:53.494> of<00:01:53.574> their<00:01:53.782> paycheck<00:01:54.279> that<00:01:54.439> goes<00:01:54.679> towards<00:01:55.080> paying<00:01:55.320> those<00:01:55.561> premiums.

00:01:56.522 --> 00:02:02.831
And<00:01:56.667> that's<00:01:57.068> even<00:01:57.566> with<00:01:57.806> the<00:01:57.903> fact<00:01:58.224> that<00:01:58.368> most<00:01:58.625> employers<00:01:59.235> are<00:01:59.396> paying<00:01:59.717> over<00:01:59.957> half<00:02:00.230> of<00:02:00.294> the<00:02:00.439> premiums<00:02:01.884> for<00:02:02.060> their<00:02:02.221> employees.

00:02:03.184 --> 00:02:16.683
And<00:02:03.328> now<00:02:03.505> one<00:02:03.649> of<00:02:03.681> the<00:02:03.810> challenges<00:02:04.227> with<00:02:04.371> health<00:02:04.564> insurance<00:02:05.094> over<00:02:05.206> the<00:02:05.270> last<00:02:05.511> several<00:02:05.977> years<00:02:06.474> is<00:02:06.699> that<00:02:07.437> because<00:02:07.919> healthcare<00:02:08.384> has<00:02:08.561> gotten<00:02:08.946> more<00:02:09.107> and<00:02:09.187> more<00:02:09.363> expensive,<00:02:10.567> premiums<00:02:11.193> on<00:02:11.290> your<00:02:11.434> health<00:02:11.691> insurance<00:02:12.172> have<00:02:12.333> gone<00:02:12.638> up<00:02:13.376> while<00:02:13.601> the<00:02:13.761> quality<00:02:14.323> of<00:02:14.404> the<00:02:14.500> health<00:02:14.757> insurance<00:02:15.206> hasn't<00:02:15.463> necessarily<00:02:16.121> increased.

00:02:17.052 --> 00:02:21.771
And<00:02:17.212> at<00:02:17.309> the<00:02:17.389> same<00:02:17.774> time,<00:02:18.994> folks<00:02:19.395> have<00:02:19.556> been<00:02:19.973> facing<00:02:20.519> higher<00:02:20.904> and<00:02:20.985> higher<00:02:21.225> deductibles.

00:02:21.948 --> 00:02:28.340
So<00:02:22.606> before<00:02:22.911> their<00:02:23.007> health<00:02:23.248> insurance<00:02:23.729> kicks<00:02:24.034> in,<00:02:24.420> there's<00:02:24.840> more<00:02:25.120> money<00:02:25.360> they've<00:02:25.660> got<00:02:25.780> to<00:02:26.680> pay<00:02:26.681> out<00:02:27.200> of<00:02:27.280> their<00:02:27.440> own<00:02:27.640> pocket.

00:02:28.460 --> 00:02:32.870
And<00:02:28.620> typically,<00:02:29.160> you<00:02:29.340> know,<00:02:29.520> families<00:02:29.940> have<00:02:30.440> deductibles<00:02:31.440> as<00:02:31.680> high<00:02:31.780> as<00:02:32.080> $3,000<00:02:32.120> or<00:02:32.121> $4,000.

00:02:33.160 --> 00:02:44.300
Now,<00:02:33.360> the<00:02:33.460> challenge<00:02:33.760> with<00:02:33.960> that<00:02:34.080> is<00:02:34.200> that<00:02:34.360> if<00:02:34.460> you<00:02:34.640> have<00:02:34.860> an<00:02:35.120> unforeseen<00:02:35.460> medical<00:02:35.780> event<00:02:36.240> where<00:02:37.080> you<00:02:37.240> need<00:02:37.400> to<00:02:37.560> then<00:02:37.800> pay<00:02:38.180> $3,000<00:02:38.380> or<00:02:38.480> $4,000,<00:02:40.240> a<00:02:40.639> lot<00:02:40.720> of<00:02:40.840> people<00:02:40.920> don't<00:02:41.080> have<00:02:41.240> that<00:02:41.440> money<00:02:41.600> available<00:02:41.960> to<00:02:42.180> them<00:02:42.820> as<00:02:43.260> liquid<00:02:43.560> cash.

00:02:44.300 --> 00:02:47.680
And<00:02:44.540> so<00:02:45.080> what<00:02:45.340> happens<00:02:45.720> is<00:02:45.940> that<00:02:46.100> many<00:02:46.280> people<00:02:46.540> take<00:02:46.780> on<00:02:47.020> medical<00:02:47.240> debt.

00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:52.740
And<00:02:47.860> in<00:02:48.020> fact,<00:02:48.240> today,<00:02:49.080> as<00:02:49.380> staggering<00:02:49.860> as<00:02:50.080> it<00:02:50.280> is,<00:02:50.700> almost<00:02:50.820> 100<00:02:51.220> million<00:02:51.420> Americans<00:02:51.860> have<00:02:52.100> medical<00:02:52.400> debt.

00:02:53.368 --> 00:02:58.176
So<00:02:53.993> the<00:02:54.138> idea<00:02:54.554> behind<00:02:54.875> supplemental<00:02:55.532> health<00:02:55.772> insurance<00:02:56.397> is<00:02:56.622> to<00:02:57.023> address<00:02:57.503> that<00:02:57.680> challenge.

00:02:58.241 --> 00:03:03.177
Now<00:02:58.705> you<00:02:58.786> might<00:02:59.026> ask,<00:02:59.763> wow,<00:03:00.068> it<00:03:00.164> feels<00:03:00.468> like<00:03:00.645> this<00:03:00.789> challenge<00:03:01.126> shouldn't<00:03:01.510> even<00:03:01.686> exist,<00:03:02.568> but<00:03:02.728> it<00:03:02.889> does.

00:03:03.353 --> 00:03:04.539
And<00:03:03.610> that's<00:03:03.850> our<00:03:04.010> reality.

00:03:04.748 --> 00:03:10.293
So<00:03:05.597> our<00:03:06.254> product<00:03:06.655> and<00:03:06.735> products<00:03:07.056> like<00:03:07.312> it<00:03:07.440> are<00:03:07.536> intended<00:03:07.937> to<00:03:08.017> help<00:03:08.402> bridge<00:03:08.658> that<00:03:08.899> financial<00:03:09.444> gap<00:03:09.700> that<00:03:09.780> people<00:03:10.085> face.

00:03:10.918 --> 00:03:13.963
So<00:03:11.030> you<00:03:11.079> said<00:03:11.367> something<00:03:11.688> incredible<00:03:12.425> there,<00:03:12.745> like<00:03:12.986> shocking,<00:03:13.611> actually.

00:03:14.028 --> 00:03:18.066
100<00:03:14.749> million<00:03:15.630> Americans<00:03:16.352> have<00:03:17.554> medical<00:03:17.874> debt.

00:03:18.419 --> 00:03:23.598
That,<00:03:18.676> I<00:03:18.692> mean,<00:03:18.900> there's<00:03:19.060> only<00:03:19.236> 300<00:03:19.637> million<00:03:20.022> people<00:03:20.278> in<00:03:20.358> the<00:03:20.503> country<00:03:21.000> and<00:03:21.144> probably<00:03:22.170> 100<00:03:22.362> million<00:03:22.667> of<00:03:22.699> those<00:03:22.924> are<00:03:23.004> under<00:03:23.229> 18.

00:03:23.887 --> 00:03:28.572
So<00:03:24.047> like,<00:03:24.207> this<00:03:24.512> is<00:03:24.609> a<00:03:24.689> huge,<00:03:25.652> huge,<00:03:25.989> huge,<00:03:26.213> huge<00:03:26.534> number<00:03:27.882> of<00:03:28.043> Americans.

00:03:28.620 --> 00:03:29.487
Like,<00:03:28.765> how<00:03:28.861> does<00:03:29.022> this<00:03:29.182> happen?

00:03:29.567 --> 00:03:34.558
Give<00:03:29.679> us<00:03:29.840> a<00:03:29.888> sense<00:03:30.867> for<00:03:31.027> like<00:03:31.814> the<00:03:31.846> state<00:03:32.231> of<00:03:32.375> healthcare<00:03:33.274> in<00:03:33.434> the<00:03:33.515> United<00:03:33.996> States.

00:03:34.863 --> 00:03:38.778
And<00:03:35.665> obviously<00:03:35.938> the<00:03:36.066> way<00:03:36.178> you're<00:03:36.323> trying<00:03:36.483> to<00:03:36.564> fix<00:03:36.804> it<00:03:36.885> is<00:03:37.029> through<00:03:37.141> this,<00:03:37.607> which,<00:03:37.767> which,<00:03:38.008> which<00:03:38.168> is<00:03:38.329> incredible.

00:03:38.874 --> 00:03:40.816
But<00:03:38.955> like,<00:03:39.516> what,<00:03:39.837> what<00:03:39.949> are<00:03:40.014> we<00:03:40.238> looking<00:03:40.479> at<00:03:40.575> right<00:03:40.672> now?

00:03:40.880 --> 00:03:44.443
I<00:03:40.976> thought<00:03:41.362> like<00:03:41.779> the<00:03:41.859> Affordable<00:03:42.324> Care<00:03:42.565> Act<00:03:42.758> and<00:03:42.886> all<00:03:42.918> that<00:03:43.063> type<00:03:43.143> of<00:03:43.239> stuff<00:03:43.480> was<00:03:43.704> to<00:03:43.785> fix<00:03:44.106> everything.

00:03:44.908 --> 00:03:46.978
Well,<00:03:45.293> look,<00:03:45.614> healthcare<00:03:45.935> in<00:03:45.967> America<00:03:46.272> is<00:03:46.416> complicated.

00:03:47.058 --> 00:04:00.300
And<00:03:47.219> I<00:03:47.235> think,<00:03:47.620> you<00:03:47.700> know,<00:03:47.941> one<00:03:48.182> thing<00:03:48.519> that,<00:03:48.904> um,<00:03:49.979> stands<00:03:50.589> out<00:03:50.926> versus<00:03:51.472> all<00:03:51.793> other<00:03:52.033> healthcare<00:03:52.435> systems<00:03:52.916> in<00:03:52.996> the<00:03:53.157> world<00:03:54.120> is<00:03:54.216> that<00:03:54.377> the<00:03:54.537> US<00:03:54.842> system<00:03:55.179> is<00:03:55.260> a<00:03:55.420> private<00:03:55.902> healthcare<00:03:56.239> system,<00:03:57.266> whereas<00:03:57.651> every<00:03:57.828> other<00:03:57.972> country<00:03:58.309> has<00:03:58.630> a<00:03:59.192> public<00:03:59.513> healthcare<00:03:59.834> system.

00:04:00.460 --> 00:04:05.163
And<00:04:00.877> one<00:04:01.022> of<00:04:01.102> the<00:04:01.343> great<00:04:01.519> advantages<00:04:02.065> of<00:04:02.145> a<00:04:02.178> public<00:04:02.483> healthcare<00:04:02.788> system<00:04:03.189> is<00:04:03.349> that<00:04:03.847> there's<00:04:04.007> a<00:04:04.072> lot<00:04:04.328> more<00:04:04.489> cost<00:04:04.794> control.

00:04:05.837 --> 00:04:19.465
Now,<00:04:05.950> there's<00:04:06.174> pros<00:04:06.431> and<00:04:06.576> cons<00:04:07.218> to<00:04:07.442> any<00:04:07.555> system,<00:04:08.100> but<00:04:08.486> one<00:04:08.582> of<00:04:08.614> the<00:04:08.742> downsides<00:04:09.320> of<00:04:09.449> what<00:04:09.545> we<00:04:09.770> have<00:04:09.962> in<00:04:10.091> the<00:04:10.187> US<00:04:10.652> is<00:04:10.749> that<00:04:11.551> there's<00:04:11.728> a<00:04:11.792> profit<00:04:12.113> incentive<00:04:12.755> that<00:04:13.140> drives<00:04:13.622> up,<00:04:14.344> um,<00:04:14.601> costs,<00:04:15.387> and<00:04:15.724> those<00:04:15.965> costs<00:04:16.511> are<00:04:16.607> being<00:04:16.928> borne<00:04:17.249> by<00:04:17.956> companies<00:04:18.614> and<00:04:18.758> their<00:04:18.919> employees.

00:04:19.882 --> 00:04:33.434
And<00:04:20.380> unfortunately,<00:04:21.103> at<00:04:21.199> a<00:04:21.247> certain<00:04:21.584> point,<00:04:21.889> those<00:04:22.066> costs<00:04:22.387> get<00:04:22.548> so<00:04:22.869> high<00:04:23.897> that<00:04:24.137> it<00:04:24.234> just<00:04:24.475> gets,<00:04:25.101> um,<00:04:26.000> unaffordable<00:04:26.899> to<00:04:27.204> pay<00:04:27.525> for<00:04:27.766> insurance<00:04:28.954> that<00:04:29.115> truly<00:04:29.693> protects<00:04:30.239> you<00:04:30.737> for<00:04:30.977> every<00:04:31.299> dollar<00:04:31.684> of<00:04:31.764> healthcare<00:04:32.262> expenditure<00:04:32.888> you<00:04:32.968> might<00:04:33.209> have.

00:04:34.092 --> 00:04:42.073
And<00:04:34.430> because<00:04:34.815> we<00:04:34.911> can't<00:04:35.152> afford<00:04:35.473> those<00:04:35.634> sorts<00:04:35.939> of<00:04:36.019> premiums,<00:04:36.517> we<00:04:36.678> have<00:04:37.384> often<00:04:37.641> high<00:04:37.882> deductible<00:04:38.364> health<00:04:38.604> plans<00:04:39.006> or<00:04:39.150> health<00:04:39.327> plans<00:04:39.568> that<00:04:39.712> have<00:04:40.290> deductibles<00:04:40.917> that<00:04:41.077> are<00:04:41.318> relatively<00:04:41.960> high.

00:04:43.004 --> 00:04:52.174
And<00:04:43.582> By<00:04:43.726> the<00:04:43.822> way,<00:04:44.223> it's<00:04:44.544> not<00:04:44.768> just<00:04:45.569> your<00:04:45.666> deductible<00:04:46.307> that<00:04:46.772> is<00:04:47.253> out-of-pocket<00:04:48.214> cost<00:04:48.535> that<00:04:48.647> you<00:04:48.727> might<00:04:48.952> have,<00:04:49.753> but<00:04:49.898> there<00:04:49.946> are<00:04:49.994> other<00:04:50.154> expenses<00:04:50.635> that<00:04:50.715> come<00:04:50.940> with<00:04:51.196> getting<00:04:51.501> sick<00:04:51.757> or<00:04:51.837> injured.

00:04:52.575 --> 00:04:54.899
If<00:04:52.639> you've<00:04:52.959> got<00:04:53.200> kids,<00:04:53.585> you<00:04:53.681> might<00:04:53.841> need<00:04:54.001> to<00:04:54.081> get<00:04:54.242> them<00:04:54.386> childcare.

00:04:55.188 --> 00:04:59.211
You<00:04:55.380> may<00:04:55.524> need<00:04:55.845> to<00:04:56.069> get<00:04:56.791> a<00:04:57.993> car<00:04:58.185> service<00:04:58.650> to<00:04:58.810> work.

00:04:59.452 --> 00:05:07.915
There<00:04:59.612> are<00:04:59.756> other<00:04:59.916> sorts<00:05:00.317> of<00:05:00.830> expenses<00:05:01.535> that<00:05:01.680> just<00:05:01.936> come<00:05:02.177> with<00:05:03.122> living<00:05:03.379> in<00:05:03.459> America<00:05:03.940> today<00:05:04.645> that<00:05:04.966> get<00:05:05.126> accentuated<00:05:05.864> when<00:05:06.088> you're<00:05:06.745> dealing<00:05:06.986> with<00:05:07.146> a<00:05:07.210> health<00:05:07.467> crisis.

00:05:08.188 --> 00:05:10.593
So<00:05:08.893> it's<00:05:09.214> unfortunate<00:05:09.775> we're<00:05:09.871> in<00:05:09.951> this<00:05:10.128> spot.

00:05:10.673 --> 00:05:13.045
I<00:05:10.737> don't<00:05:10.993> think<00:05:11.234> there<00:05:11.394> are<00:05:11.634> easy<00:05:11.875> fixes,<00:05:12.356> unfortunately.

00:05:13.702 --> 00:05:19.702
And<00:05:14.023> at<00:05:14.199> some<00:05:14.600> level,<00:05:15.161> there<00:05:15.370> there<00:05:15.434> needs<00:05:15.562> to<00:05:15.658> be<00:05:15.947> legislative<00:05:16.589> involvement<00:05:17.183> to<00:05:17.327> drive<00:05:17.744> the<00:05:17.824> sorts<00:05:18.145> of<00:05:18.274> changes<00:05:18.627> that<00:05:18.723> we<00:05:18.851> fundamentally<00:05:19.349> need.

00:05:20.376 --> 00:05:27.788
But<00:05:20.456> in<00:05:20.536> the<00:05:20.600> meantime,<00:05:21.884> the<00:05:21.980> question<00:05:22.285> is,<00:05:22.445> you<00:05:22.477> know,<00:05:22.622> what<00:05:22.782> can<00:05:23.023> we<00:05:23.183> do<00:05:23.424> as<00:05:23.665> innovators,<00:05:24.146> as<00:05:24.290> entrepreneurs,<00:05:25.029> to<00:05:25.670> bring<00:05:25.911> solutions<00:05:26.537> to<00:05:26.569> the<00:05:26.649> market<00:05:27.098> that<00:05:27.211> help<00:05:27.355> people<00:05:27.676> out?

00:05:28.462 --> 00:05:31.511
So<00:05:28.623> give<00:05:28.735> us<00:05:28.879> your<00:05:28.960> story<00:05:29.361> of<00:05:29.521> like<00:05:30.548> how<00:05:30.708> you<00:05:30.805> became<00:05:31.222> CEO.

00:05:31.607 --> 00:05:41.731
I<00:05:31.767> know<00:05:31.928> like<00:05:32.169> previously<00:05:32.794> you<00:05:33.677> were<00:05:33.837> the<00:05:33.950> CEO<00:05:34.319> of<00:05:34.351> a<00:05:34.415> company,<00:05:35.073> let's<00:05:35.442> see,<00:05:35.602> Maxwell<00:05:36.404> Health,<00:05:37.688> incredible<00:05:38.185> company<00:05:38.651> which<00:05:38.891> was<00:05:38.988> acquired<00:05:39.309> by<00:05:39.645> Sun<00:05:40.031> Life<00:05:40.416> in<00:05:41.073> 2018.

00:05:41.796 --> 00:05:43.801
You<00:05:41.956> co-founded<00:05:42.582> and<00:05:42.662> were<00:05:42.758> the<00:05:42.838> CEO<00:05:43.320> of<00:05:43.464> that.

00:05:44.202 --> 00:05:46.786
Like,<00:05:44.347> what<00:05:44.443> have<00:05:44.539> you<00:05:44.684> learned<00:05:44.941> in<00:05:45.085> this<00:05:45.310> journey<00:05:45.743> about<00:05:46.128> leadership?

00:05:46.915 --> 00:05:49.370
And,<00:05:47.316> you<00:05:47.348> know,<00:05:47.556> what<00:05:47.717> made<00:05:47.894> you<00:05:47.974> sign<00:05:48.214> up<00:05:48.295> for<00:05:48.391> like,<00:05:48.535> hey,<00:05:48.600> I'm<00:05:48.712> going<00:05:48.856> to<00:05:48.937> do<00:05:49.033> this<00:05:49.177> again?

00:05:49.964 --> 00:05:55.196
Well,<00:05:50.943> I<00:05:51.087> think,<00:05:51.344> I<00:05:51.408> think<00:05:51.585> there<00:05:51.665> are<00:05:51.809> two<00:05:51.986> things<00:05:52.371> that<00:05:52.772> are,<00:05:53.174> um,<00:05:53.575> in<00:05:53.671> my<00:05:53.815> view,<00:05:53.992> really<00:05:54.297> important<00:05:54.682> to<00:05:54.730> leadership.

00:05:55.661 --> 00:06:03.910
One<00:05:55.902> is,<00:05:56.704> um,<00:05:56.881> having<00:05:57.138> a<00:05:57.186> mission<00:05:57.924> that's<00:05:58.229> worth<00:05:58.421> solving,<00:05:58.967> or<00:05:59.063> a<00:05:59.128> vision<00:05:59.529> that<00:05:59.930> people<00:06:00.331> are,<00:06:01.278> um,<00:06:02.257> you<00:06:02.353> know,<00:06:02.482> motivated<00:06:03.124> to<00:06:03.220> want<00:06:03.380> to<00:06:03.445> solve.

00:06:04.183 --> 00:06:08.051
You<00:06:04.263> know,<00:06:04.408> I<00:06:04.568> believe<00:06:04.889> that<00:06:05.049> it's<00:06:05.210> really<00:06:05.451> hard<00:06:05.788> to<00:06:06.670> inherently<00:06:07.232> motivate<00:06:07.778> people.

00:06:08.115 --> 00:06:10.890
They<00:06:08.500> are<00:06:08.757> either<00:06:09.078> motivated<00:06:09.704> about<00:06:10.442> something.

00:06:11.227 --> 00:06:15.201
And<00:06:11.483> the<00:06:11.627> trick<00:06:12.028> as<00:06:12.140> an<00:06:12.268> entrepreneur<00:06:12.781> is<00:06:12.925> to<00:06:13.022> find<00:06:13.310> people<00:06:13.631> who<00:06:13.727> are<00:06:13.791> already<00:06:14.047> trying<00:06:14.223> to<00:06:14.288> solve<00:06:14.544> our<00:06:14.688> problems.

00:06:15.249 --> 00:06:25.953
So<00:06:16.130> when<00:06:16.291> we're<00:06:16.515> hiring<00:06:16.932> folks,<00:06:17.396> we're<00:06:17.557> looking<00:06:17.797> for<00:06:17.893> individuals<00:06:18.534> who<00:06:18.838> have<00:06:19.015> been<00:06:19.319> thinking<00:06:19.640> about<00:06:19.896> this<00:06:20.136> issue,<00:06:20.521> have<00:06:20.681> been<00:06:21.258> working<00:06:21.659> in<00:06:21.803> this<00:06:21.883> space,<00:06:23.005> who<00:06:23.245> inherently<00:06:23.806> have<00:06:23.982> dealt<00:06:24.303> with<00:06:24.447> the<00:06:24.527> challenges<00:06:25.040> that<00:06:25.184> we're<00:06:25.328> trying<00:06:25.585> to<00:06:25.665> solve.

00:06:26.450 --> 00:06:31.530
And<00:06:26.706> they've<00:06:26.947> been,<00:06:27.347> you<00:06:27.444> know,<00:06:27.572> they've<00:06:27.732> been<00:06:27.828> finding<00:06:28.133> a<00:06:28.213> place<00:06:28.453> to<00:06:28.549> be<00:06:28.709> able<00:06:28.870> to<00:06:28.950> devote<00:06:29.270> their<00:06:29.415> energies<00:06:29.911> towards,<00:06:30.793> towards<00:06:31.097> this<00:06:31.209> mission.

00:06:31.610 --> 00:06:33.469
So,<00:06:32.700> so<00:06:32.780> that's<00:06:32.956> the<00:06:33.036> first<00:06:33.276> thing.

00:06:33.517 --> 00:06:35.696
And<00:06:33.597> the<00:06:33.677> second<00:06:34.062> is,<00:06:34.542> is<00:06:35.344> values.

00:06:35.760 --> 00:06:44.690
I<00:06:35.840> think<00:06:36.081> that<00:06:36.786> At<00:06:36.866> the<00:06:36.962> end<00:06:37.058> of<00:06:37.107> the<00:06:37.203> day,<00:06:38.165> any<00:06:38.405> organization<00:06:39.207> is<00:06:39.351> just<00:06:39.624> a<00:06:39.688> combination<00:06:40.329> of<00:06:41.676> people,<00:06:42.013> a<00:06:42.029> mission,<00:06:42.494> and<00:06:42.590> a<00:06:42.638> set<00:06:42.830> of<00:06:42.894> values<00:06:44.017> being<00:06:44.241> creative.

00:06:45.604 --> 00:06:55.577
And<00:06:45.764> I<00:06:45.861> think<00:06:46.021> having<00:06:46.887> a<00:06:47.143> common<00:06:47.480> set<00:06:47.720> of<00:06:47.849> values<00:06:48.266> that<00:06:48.666> work<00:06:50.190> for<00:06:50.735> us,<00:06:51.055> that<00:06:52.017> are<00:06:52.258> important<00:06:52.899> to<00:06:52.995> how<00:06:53.156> we<00:06:53.300> operate<00:06:53.637> as<00:06:53.733> an<00:06:53.797> organization,<00:06:54.919> are<00:06:55.080> really<00:06:55.384> key.

00:06:55.721 --> 00:06:59.104
So,<00:06:56.122> you<00:06:56.218> know,<00:06:56.362> to<00:06:56.458> me,<00:06:56.667> those<00:06:56.923> are<00:06:57.725> really<00:06:57.901> the<00:06:58.046> big<00:06:58.222> learnings<00:06:58.543> along<00:06:58.831> the<00:06:58.911> way.

00:06:59.633 --> 00:07:01.749
Yeah,<00:07:00.034> yeah,<00:07:00.451> that<00:07:00.996> makes<00:07:01.236> total<00:07:01.477> sense.

00:07:02.294 --> 00:07:03.529
What<00:07:02.439> causes<00:07:02.840> you<00:07:03.080> stress?

00:07:03.737 --> 00:07:13.534
Give<00:07:03.834> me<00:07:03.978> a<00:07:03.994> sense<00:07:04.443> for<00:07:05.806> how<00:07:06.048> you<00:07:06.129> manage<00:07:06.613> your<00:07:06.774> day-to-day<00:07:07.904> mental<00:07:08.226> health<00:07:08.581> and<00:07:08.646> just<00:07:08.952> overall,<00:07:09.856> you<00:07:09.936> know,<00:07:10.259> stress<00:07:10.582> levels?

00:07:13.970 --> 00:07:17.303
I<00:07:14.050> think,<00:07:15.341> you<00:07:15.390> know,<00:07:15.582> one,<00:07:15.824> there's<00:07:16.049> something<00:07:16.226> to<00:07:16.306> be<00:07:16.387> said<00:07:16.564> about<00:07:16.724> experience.

00:07:17.352 --> 00:07:21.565
I'm<00:07:17.448> in<00:07:17.577> my<00:07:17.673> mid-40s<00:07:18.252> now,<00:07:18.558> which<00:07:18.799> was<00:07:18.944> very<00:07:19.121> different<00:07:19.507> from<00:07:19.764> building<00:07:20.005> a<00:07:20.086> company<00:07:20.391> in<00:07:20.423> my<00:07:20.632> 30s<00:07:21.034> or<00:07:21.067> my<00:07:21.211> 20s.

00:07:22.836 --> 00:07:28.894
So<00:07:23.286> you<00:07:23.704> just<00:07:24.009> learn<00:07:24.346> to<00:07:25.150> not<00:07:25.953> be<00:07:26.178> too<00:07:26.355> high<00:07:26.660> with<00:07:26.757> the<00:07:26.901> highs<00:07:27.319> and<00:07:27.399> not<00:07:27.640> be<00:07:27.801> too<00:07:28.106> low<00:07:28.283> with<00:07:28.428> the<00:07:28.524> lows.

00:07:29.231 --> 00:07:33.437
You<00:07:29.263> know,<00:07:29.311> I<00:07:29.488> think<00:07:30.115> having<00:07:30.356> that<00:07:30.597> sort<00:07:30.693> of<00:07:31.239> even-keel<00:07:31.738> approach<00:07:32.075> to<00:07:32.220> things<00:07:32.541> is<00:07:32.670> really<00:07:32.882> important.

00:07:33.665 --> 00:07:35.020
I<00:07:33.910> also<00:07:34.090> think<00:07:34.237> having<00:07:34.661> balance<00:07:34.955> is<00:07:34.988> key.

00:07:35.069 --> 00:07:39.921
You<00:07:35.102> know,<00:07:35.151> what<00:07:35.200> are<00:07:35.232> the<00:07:35.281> outlets<00:07:35.396> that<00:07:35.477> you<00:07:35.543> have<00:07:35.608> that<00:07:37.722> that<00:07:38.910> give<00:07:39.006> you<00:07:39.151> a<00:07:39.247> break<00:07:39.504> from<00:07:39.729> work.

00:07:40.114 --> 00:07:46.583
And<00:07:40.531> for<00:07:40.756> me,<00:07:40.949> it's<00:07:41.398> certainly<00:07:41.671> my<00:07:41.831> family<00:07:42.843> and<00:07:43.886> all<00:07:44.063> their<00:07:44.288> interests<00:07:45.764> that<00:07:45.925> are<00:07:46.053> exciting.

00:07:46.631 --> 00:07:51.833
We<00:07:46.792> talked<00:07:47.033> a<00:07:47.049> little<00:07:47.257> bit<00:07:47.370> about<00:07:47.578> hockey<00:07:47.916> before<00:07:48.301> the<00:07:48.638> interview<00:07:48.959> started,<00:07:49.360> so<00:07:49.457> that's<00:07:49.746> certainly<00:07:50.324> a<00:07:50.468> release<00:07:51.528> for<00:07:51.704> me.

00:07:52.314 --> 00:08:00.453
But<00:07:52.475> I<00:07:52.555> think<00:07:53.277> that<00:07:53.518> those<00:07:53.711> are<00:07:53.839> really<00:07:54.080> important<00:07:54.562> things<00:07:54.899> and<00:07:55.701> trying<00:07:55.862> to<00:07:55.942> stay<00:07:57.226> physically<00:07:57.869> and<00:07:57.965> mentally<00:07:58.414> fit<00:07:59.249> is<00:07:59.458> also<00:07:59.699> really<00:07:59.939> important.

00:08:01.079 --> 00:08:08.021
Not<00:08:01.240> things<00:08:01.464> that<00:08:01.625> are<00:08:01.962> new<00:08:02.428> to<00:08:02.492> your<00:08:02.668> listeners,<00:08:03.246> but<00:08:03.744> I<00:08:03.888> think<00:08:04.354> hard<00:08:05.014> to<00:08:05.094> practice<00:08:05.596> unless<00:08:05.967> you<00:08:06.145> just<00:08:06.388> have<00:08:06.549> some<00:08:06.857> level<00:08:07.099> of<00:08:07.196> discipline<00:08:07.665> around<00:08:07.988> it.

00:08:08.150 --> 00:08:15.438
I<00:08:08.166> mean,<00:08:08.344> it's,<00:08:09.039> it's<00:08:09.363> easy<00:08:09.702> to<00:08:09.799> not<00:08:10.187> stop<00:08:10.656> working,<00:08:11.562> but<00:08:11.723> it's<00:08:12.030> probably<00:08:12.418> not<00:08:12.693> good<00:08:12.855> for<00:08:13.081> you<00:08:13.583> or<00:08:13.663> the<00:08:13.809> team<00:08:14.003> around<00:08:14.391> you<00:08:14.440> or<00:08:14.472> the<00:08:14.552> problem<00:08:14.874> you're<00:08:14.971> working<00:08:15.341> on.

00:08:15.937 --> 00:08:19.319
So<00:08:16.243> give<00:08:16.404> us<00:08:16.549> a<00:08:16.581> sense<00:08:16.807> for<00:08:17.209> what<00:08:17.370> like<00:08:17.547> a<00:08:17.676> typical<00:08:18.095> day<00:08:18.320> looks<00:08:18.562> like<00:08:18.739> for<00:08:18.836> you.

00:08:19.544 --> 00:08:34.112
Most<00:08:19.850> of<00:08:19.882> my<00:08:20.108> day,<00:08:20.333> like,<00:08:20.655> like<00:08:20.816> I<00:08:20.913> think<00:08:21.219> most<00:08:21.477> CEOs,<00:08:22.266> is,<00:08:22.668> is<00:08:23.264> making<00:08:23.570> sure<00:08:23.812> that<00:08:24.524> we're<00:08:24.621> focused<00:08:24.944> on<00:08:25.009> the<00:08:25.090> right<00:08:25.268> things,<00:08:26.707> that<00:08:28.486> we're<00:08:28.810> initiating<00:08:29.554> and<00:08:29.861> progressing<00:08:30.427> the<00:08:30.524> right<00:08:30.831> projects,<00:08:32.530> not<00:08:32.708> just<00:08:32.950> moving<00:08:33.178> every<00:08:33.424> project<00:08:33.768> forward.

00:08:34.177 --> 00:08:38.417
Some<00:08:34.406> projects<00:08:34.619> don't<00:08:35.306> shouldn't<00:08:35.642> move<00:08:35.883> forward<00:08:36.669> because<00:08:36.990> they're<00:08:37.407> not<00:08:37.631> the<00:08:37.711> right<00:08:37.807> use<00:08:37.968> of<00:08:38.112> energy.

00:08:38.754 --> 00:08:43.821
It's<00:08:39.090> making<00:08:39.395> sure<00:08:39.571> that<00:08:39.668> we've<00:08:39.812> got<00:08:40.053> the<00:08:40.117> right<00:08:40.293> people<00:08:40.710> focused<00:08:41.239> on<00:08:41.336> those<00:08:41.560> problems<00:08:42.057> and<00:08:42.121> that<00:08:42.218> we're<00:08:42.378> clearing<00:08:42.923> roadblocks<00:08:43.484> for<00:08:43.565> them.

00:08:44.222 --> 00:08:46.275
Certainly<00:08:44.543> making<00:08:44.848> sure<00:08:45.024> that<00:08:45.104> we're<00:08:45.265> thinking<00:08:45.569> ahead<00:08:45.746> of<00:08:45.778> the<00:08:45.890> curve.

00:08:46.932 --> 00:08:52.160
Every<00:08:47.269> organization<00:08:47.911> today<00:08:48.568> is<00:08:48.712> thinking<00:08:48.969> about<00:08:49.226> how<00:08:49.979> AI<00:08:50.236> and<00:08:50.316> automation<00:08:51.022> can<00:08:51.423> make<00:08:51.535> a<00:08:51.599> big<00:08:51.759> difference.

00:08:52.240 --> 00:08:58.142
So,<00:08:53.026> you<00:08:53.122> know,<00:08:53.203> my<00:08:53.347> role<00:08:53.523> as<00:08:53.684> a<00:08:53.700> CEO<00:08:54.261> is<00:08:54.470> to<00:08:54.870> make<00:08:55.031> sure<00:08:55.207> that<00:08:55.352> we're<00:08:55.464> thinking<00:08:55.865> about<00:08:56.394> those<00:08:56.635> opportunities<00:08:57.292> as<00:08:57.372> an<00:08:57.517> organization.

00:08:58.751 --> 00:09:10.866
So<00:08:58.976> my<00:08:59.136> day<00:08:59.681> is<00:08:59.938> scattered<00:09:00.499> between,<00:09:01.045> you<00:09:01.077> know,<00:09:01.526> all<00:09:01.622> those<00:09:01.799> sorts<00:09:02.168> of<00:09:02.248> things,<00:09:02.729> whether<00:09:02.986> it's<00:09:03.147> one-on-ones<00:09:03.708> with<00:09:03.869> our<00:09:04.029> team<00:09:04.495> or<00:09:05.072> meeting<00:09:05.297> with<00:09:05.474> customers<00:09:05.875> or<00:09:05.955> partners,<00:09:07.159> but<00:09:07.897> singularly<00:09:08.683> focused<00:09:09.148> on<00:09:09.245> making<00:09:09.550> sure<00:09:09.662> we're<00:09:09.790> driving<00:09:10.063> this<00:09:10.208> mission<00:09:10.529> forward.

00:09:10.914 --> 00:09:12.551
It's<00:09:11.395> easy<00:09:11.652> to<00:09:11.732> get<00:09:11.957> distracted.

00:09:13.160 --> 00:09:19.210
I<00:09:13.176> think<00:09:13.417> that<00:09:14.444> there's<00:09:14.781> always<00:09:15.503> another<00:09:15.905> problem<00:09:16.370> you<00:09:16.530> could<00:09:16.707> be<00:09:16.787> solving<00:09:17.349> or<00:09:17.429> a<00:09:17.509> shiny<00:09:17.975> object<00:09:18.296> you<00:09:18.376> could<00:09:18.472> be<00:09:18.633> going<00:09:18.938> after.

00:09:19.339 --> 00:09:30.156
We've<00:09:19.435> been<00:09:20.141> really<00:09:20.462> disciplined<00:09:20.976> about<00:09:21.762> being<00:09:22.243> very<00:09:22.629> laser-focused<00:09:23.591> on<00:09:24.233> what<00:09:24.394> we're<00:09:24.490> doing<00:09:24.891> and<00:09:25.212> not<00:09:26.560> adding<00:09:26.817> features<00:09:27.282> and<00:09:27.363> capabilities<00:09:28.342> to<00:09:28.518> the<00:09:28.743> product<00:09:29.369> because<00:09:29.690> we<00:09:29.786> can.

00:09:30.573 --> 00:09:31.809
That's<00:09:30.942> not<00:09:31.071> a<00:09:31.135> good<00:09:31.247> enough<00:09:31.536> reason.

00:09:31.889 --> 00:09:33.559
So<00:09:32.130> I<00:09:32.275> think<00:09:32.419> that<00:09:32.580> focus<00:09:32.981> is<00:09:33.077> really<00:09:33.318> key.

00:09:34.024 --> 00:09:42.468
When<00:09:34.121> I<00:09:34.281> think<00:09:34.442> of<00:09:34.586> like<00:09:36.352> the<00:09:36.689> areas<00:09:37.251> that<00:09:37.476> artificial<00:09:38.054> intelligence<00:09:38.632> is<00:09:38.776> going<00:09:38.873> to<00:09:38.937> disrupt<00:09:39.402> the<00:09:39.483> most,<00:09:40.526> healthcare<00:09:40.879> is<00:09:41.345> right<00:09:41.585> there<00:09:41.730> at<00:09:41.810> the<00:09:41.891> top<00:09:42.163> of<00:09:42.212> the<00:09:42.292> list.

00:09:42.709 --> 00:09:44.989
I<00:09:42.741> don't<00:09:42.886> know<00:09:42.950> if<00:09:43.046> it's<00:09:43.191> number<00:09:43.496> 1,<00:09:43.753> but<00:09:43.849> it's<00:09:44.475> up<00:09:44.555> there<00:09:44.636> in<00:09:44.716> the<00:09:44.812> top.

00:09:45.438 --> 00:09:47.830
But<00:09:45.535> that's<00:09:45.759> like<00:09:45.920> the<00:09:46.016> specifics<00:09:46.787> of<00:09:46.867> the<00:09:46.963> care<00:09:47.204> itself.

00:09:48.553 --> 00:09:54.460
And<00:09:48.633> what<00:09:48.793> you're<00:09:48.906> talking<00:09:49.114> about<00:09:49.371> is<00:09:49.516> like<00:09:49.837> the<00:09:49.933> benefits<00:09:50.479> and<00:09:50.575> the<00:09:50.736> insurance<00:09:51.217> piece,<00:09:51.458> which<00:09:52.084> I<00:09:52.181> think<00:09:52.486> maybe<00:09:52.983> it<00:09:53.304> plays<00:09:53.545> a<00:09:53.609> role<00:09:53.786> in<00:09:53.930> there<00:09:54.107> as<00:09:54.268> well.

00:09:54.910 --> 00:09:56.467
How<00:09:55.150> are<00:09:55.311> you<00:09:55.536> thinking<00:09:55.889> about<00:09:56.178> AI?

00:09:56.740 --> 00:09:57.976
How<00:09:56.836> are<00:09:56.997> you<00:09:57.157> implementing<00:09:57.703> AI?

00:09:58.490 --> 00:10:04.025
Are<00:09:58.586> you<00:09:58.682> implementing<00:09:59.083> it<00:09:59.147> in<00:09:59.324> your<00:09:59.484> product<00:09:59.901> at<00:10:00.030> all<00:10:00.206> yet,<00:10:00.671> or<00:10:00.832> has<00:10:01.008> it<00:10:01.169> just<00:10:01.329> been<00:10:01.554> more<00:10:01.730> of<00:10:01.891> the<00:10:02.051> internal,<00:10:02.613> like,<00:10:02.998> automating<00:10:03.415> processes?

00:10:04.522 --> 00:10:09.752
For<00:10:04.602> us<00:10:04.779> so<00:10:05.019> far,<00:10:05.340> it's<00:10:05.501> been<00:10:05.661> focused<00:10:06.303> internally<00:10:06.928> on<00:10:07.105> how<00:10:07.265> do<00:10:07.362> we<00:10:07.731> operate<00:10:08.067> our<00:10:08.228> business<00:10:08.613> as<00:10:08.709> efficiently<00:10:09.110> as<00:10:09.255> possible.

00:10:10.169 --> 00:10:23.726
You<00:10:10.314> know,<00:10:10.490> I<00:10:10.554> think<00:10:11.019> in<00:10:11.180> the<00:10:11.340> realm<00:10:11.581> of<00:10:11.677> insurance<00:10:12.544> where,<00:10:13.201> you<00:10:13.667> know,<00:10:14.645> the<00:10:15.608> value<00:10:16.089> we<00:10:16.234> give<00:10:16.490> back<00:10:16.795> to<00:10:17.613> a<00:10:17.854> policyholder,<00:10:19.218> known<00:10:19.394> as<00:10:19.539> a<00:10:19.603> loss<00:10:19.924> ratio<00:10:20.261> in<00:10:20.357> insurance<00:10:20.822> talk,<00:10:21.769> is<00:10:22.330> obviously<00:10:22.731> core<00:10:22.988> to<00:10:23.132> what<00:10:23.309> we<00:10:23.469> do.

00:10:24.352 --> 00:10:26.968
But<00:10:24.673> what's<00:10:24.897> left<00:10:25.138> over<00:10:25.716> is<00:10:25.861> where<00:10:26.021> we<00:10:26.101> have<00:10:26.198> to<00:10:26.294> find<00:10:26.519> profit.

00:10:27.145 --> 00:10:32.025
And<00:10:27.241> the<00:10:27.386> more<00:10:27.498> efficiently<00:10:28.028> we<00:10:28.124> can<00:10:28.268> run<00:10:28.429> the<00:10:28.509> organization,<00:10:29.232> the<00:10:29.328> more<00:10:29.488> value<00:10:29.954> we<00:10:30.050> can<00:10:30.773> provide<00:10:31.158> back<00:10:31.335> to<00:10:31.415> policyholders.

00:10:32.073 --> 00:10:34.417
So<00:10:33.020> that's<00:10:33.518> a<00:10:33.582> big<00:10:33.742> driver<00:10:34.144> for<00:10:34.368> us.

00:10:34.545 --> 00:10:38.687
And<00:10:34.690> I<00:10:34.706> think,<00:10:35.348> you<00:10:35.444> know,<00:10:35.588> in<00:10:35.733> many<00:10:35.990> ways,<00:10:36.391> insurance<00:10:37.434> is<00:10:37.595> a<00:10:37.659> contract<00:10:38.237> and<00:10:38.317> math.

00:10:39.425 --> 00:10:45.316
And<00:10:39.987> it<00:10:40.308> would<00:10:40.404> seem<00:10:40.725> like<00:10:41.287> there<00:10:41.608> are<00:10:41.769> lots<00:10:42.026> of<00:10:42.090> ways<00:10:42.475> to<00:10:42.652> be<00:10:42.812> able<00:10:42.989> to<00:10:43.695> bring<00:10:43.872> intelligence<00:10:44.417> and<00:10:44.482> automation<00:10:44.979> to<00:10:45.076> that.

00:10:45.445 --> 00:10:46.504
And<00:10:45.686> I<00:10:45.702> think<00:10:45.862> there<00:10:45.958> certainly<00:10:46.344> are.

00:10:46.601 --> 00:10:48.222
So<00:10:46.761> that's<00:10:47.227> been<00:10:47.387> the<00:10:47.467> initial<00:10:47.805> focus.

00:10:48.736 --> 00:10:59.876
I<00:10:48.912> think<00:10:49.073> there<00:10:49.169> are<00:10:49.233> certainly<00:10:49.618> some<00:10:49.795> externally<00:10:50.277> facing<00:10:50.742> applications,<00:10:51.481> but<00:10:52.042> At<00:10:52.122> the<00:10:52.266> end<00:10:52.362> of<00:10:52.426> the<00:10:52.523> day,<00:10:52.763> the<00:10:53.083> single<00:10:54.365> most<00:10:54.782> important<00:10:55.310> thing<00:10:56.127> a<00:10:56.207> customer<00:10:56.912> does<00:10:57.313> with<00:10:57.553> us<00:10:58.434> is<00:10:59.316> file<00:10:59.508> a<00:10:59.572> claim.

00:11:00.117 --> 00:11:04.475
And<00:11:01.014> then<00:11:01.174> the<00:11:01.254> single<00:11:01.639> most<00:11:01.815> important<00:11:02.135> thing<00:11:02.296> we<00:11:02.456> do<00:11:02.600> with<00:11:02.760> it<00:11:02.920> is<00:11:03.097> pay<00:11:03.273> it<00:11:03.401> out<00:11:03.577> if<00:11:03.673> it's<00:11:03.802> a<00:11:03.834> payable<00:11:04.202> claim.

00:11:05.019 --> 00:11:18.173
We've<00:11:05.244> already<00:11:05.580> been<00:11:05.756> able<00:11:05.965> to<00:11:06.205> automate<00:11:06.637> 3/4<00:11:07.422> of<00:11:07.503> our<00:11:07.727> claims<00:11:08.784> without<00:11:09.089> using<00:11:09.329> artificial<00:11:09.746> intelligence,<00:11:10.451> but<00:11:10.627> just<00:11:10.787> by<00:11:10.947> simply<00:11:12.069> building<00:11:12.549> a<00:11:12.694> product<00:11:13.190> that<00:11:13.911> is<00:11:13.991> simple<00:11:14.776> and<00:11:15.577> getting<00:11:15.898> access<00:11:16.154> to<00:11:16.314> data<00:11:16.555> that<00:11:16.635> allows<00:11:17.035> us<00:11:17.115> to<00:11:17.180> automate<00:11:17.596> that<00:11:17.756> process.

00:11:18.301 --> 00:11:24.344
So<00:11:19.198> there's<00:11:19.743> always<00:11:20.063> more<00:11:20.240> to<00:11:20.320> be<00:11:20.464> done,<00:11:20.800> but<00:11:22.483> We've<00:11:22.628> been<00:11:22.724> focused<00:11:23.045> internally<00:11:23.526> mostly<00:11:23.830> at<00:11:23.991> this<00:11:24.151> point.

00:11:24.809 --> 00:11:26.765
What<00:11:24.953> is<00:11:25.065> your<00:11:25.274> best<00:11:25.546> advice<00:11:26.075> for<00:11:26.188> success?

00:11:27.294 --> 00:11:35.344
I<00:11:27.358> think<00:11:27.519> it<00:11:27.599> goes<00:11:27.839> back<00:11:28.080> to,<00:11:28.417> you<00:11:28.497> know,<00:11:29.218> a<00:11:29.283> question<00:11:29.635> you<00:11:29.764> asked<00:11:30.020> earlier<00:11:30.405> on<00:11:30.597> about,<00:11:31.207> um,<00:11:31.848> you<00:11:31.928> know,<00:11:32.490> what<00:11:32.971> it<00:11:33.131> is<00:11:33.308> that,<00:11:33.708> that<00:11:33.933> motivates<00:11:34.350> me<00:11:34.590> and<00:11:34.671> why<00:11:34.735> I<00:11:34.911> did<00:11:35.136> this.

00:11:35.937 --> 00:11:38.006
But<00:11:36.178> I<00:11:36.258> think<00:11:36.370> it<00:11:36.435> comes<00:11:36.675> down<00:11:36.916> to<00:11:37.156> mission<00:11:37.477> and<00:11:37.557> values.

00:11:38.423 --> 00:11:48.109
I,<00:11:38.663> I<00:11:38.680> think<00:11:39.802> not<00:11:40.043> all<00:11:40.283> problems<00:11:40.909> are,<00:11:41.325> are<00:11:41.710> necessarily<00:11:42.929> worth<00:11:43.105> solving,<00:11:43.731> and,<00:11:44.035> and<00:11:44.132> certain<00:11:44.533> problems<00:11:45.014> probably<00:11:46.136> maybe<00:11:46.441> aren't<00:11:47.179> ones<00:11:47.403> that<00:11:47.499> you<00:11:47.660> should<00:11:47.836> solve.

00:11:48.221 --> 00:12:02.374
So<00:11:48.622> finding<00:11:49.007> something<00:11:49.343> that<00:11:49.488> you're<00:11:49.808> really<00:11:50.145> passionate<00:11:50.562> about<00:11:50.867> that<00:11:50.963> you<00:11:51.043> think<00:11:51.348> you<00:11:51.492> can<00:11:51.572> have<00:11:51.749> an<00:11:51.829> impact<00:11:52.214> on,<00:11:52.374> I<00:11:52.406> think,<00:11:52.647> is<00:11:53.336> is<00:11:53.512> first<00:11:53.737> of<00:11:53.817> all<00:11:53.913> really<00:11:54.137> important,<00:11:55.259> and<00:11:55.355> building<00:11:55.612> a<00:11:55.676> team<00:11:56.317> that<00:11:56.781> is<00:11:57.022> equally<00:11:57.358> motivated<00:11:58.400> to<00:11:58.480> focus<00:11:58.865> on<00:11:58.945> that<00:11:59.105> problem,<00:11:59.602> to<00:11:59.698> me,<00:11:59.906> I<00:11:59.986> think<00:12:00.227> are<00:12:00.788> the<00:12:00.964> two<00:12:01.204> really<00:12:01.461> most<00:12:01.749> important<00:12:02.086> things.

00:12:02.470 --> 00:12:14.152
I<00:12:02.486> think<00:12:02.662> if<00:12:03.063> you<00:12:03.191> can<00:12:03.303> solve<00:12:03.768> that,<00:12:04.714> there<00:12:04.970> are<00:12:05.226> many<00:12:05.515> problems<00:12:06.012> that<00:12:06.172> you'll<00:12:06.332> encounter<00:12:06.813> along<00:12:07.117> the<00:12:07.198> way<00:12:07.534> that<00:12:08.319> you'll<00:12:08.431> be<00:12:08.576> equipped<00:12:08.832> to<00:12:08.960> solve<00:12:09.297> because<00:12:09.537> you<00:12:09.585> have<00:12:09.681> a<00:12:09.761> team<00:12:10.098> that<00:12:10.483> is<00:12:10.963> excited<00:12:11.540> to<00:12:11.684> do<00:12:11.861> it<00:12:12.646> and<00:12:13.143> is<00:12:13.287> here<00:12:13.399> for<00:12:13.527> the<00:12:13.607> right<00:12:13.784> reasons.

00:12:14.585 --> 00:12:14.921
Right.

00:12:15.450 --> 00:12:15.995
What<00:12:15.530> do<00:12:15.562> you<00:12:15.707> read?

00:12:16.652 --> 00:12:18.479
What<00:12:16.893> reading<00:12:17.085> recommendations<00:12:17.790> would<00:12:17.934> you<00:12:18.014> have<00:12:18.191> for<00:12:18.351> us?

00:12:19.137 --> 00:12:21.274
I<00:12:19.153> actually<00:12:19.635> read<00:12:20.021> a<00:12:20.294> lot<00:12:20.663> of<00:12:20.760> fiction.

00:12:21.740 --> 00:12:22.527
So<00:12:21.820> what<00:12:21.900> am<00:12:21.949> I<00:12:21.965> reading<00:12:22.222> right<00:12:22.366> now?

00:12:22.607 --> 00:12:26.624
I'm,<00:12:23.073> I'm,<00:12:23.395> uh,<00:12:23.732> reading,<00:12:25.082> uh,<00:12:25.178> The<00:12:25.323> Trial<00:12:25.885> by<00:12:25.981> Franz<00:12:26.303> Kafka.

00:12:26.881 --> 00:12:27.588
I<00:12:26.929> hadn't<00:12:27.106> read<00:12:27.331> that.

00:12:27.813 --> 00:12:28.681
I<00:12:27.893> thought<00:12:28.006> it<00:12:28.070> was<00:12:28.231> interesting.

00:12:29.098 --> 00:12:33.099
Um,<00:12:30.560> now<00:12:31.348> let's<00:12:31.733> have<00:12:31.798> a<00:12:31.830> whole<00:12:32.071> different<00:12:32.472> conversation.

00:12:33.195 --> 00:12:35.300
Yeah,<00:12:33.613> yeah,<00:12:33.774> I<00:12:33.918> read<00:12:34.095> Metamorphosis<00:12:34.802> just<00:12:34.899> before<00:12:35.140> that.

00:12:35.364 --> 00:12:44.330
But,<00:12:35.461> but<00:12:35.622> a<00:12:35.686> couple<00:12:35.863> of<00:12:35.927> books<00:12:36.104> I<00:12:36.264> really<00:12:36.569> enjoyed,<00:12:36.971> if<00:12:37.148> you,<00:12:37.550> um,<00:12:37.871> enjoy<00:12:38.192> World<00:12:38.353> War<00:12:38.481> II<00:12:38.674> history,<00:12:39.944> um,<00:12:40.281> by<00:12:40.506> Herman<00:12:40.827> Wouk,<00:12:41.390> um,<00:12:41.952> are<00:12:42.354> The<00:12:42.434> Winds<00:12:42.675> of<00:12:42.771> War<00:12:43.077> and<00:12:43.173> The<00:12:43.318> War<00:12:43.800> and<00:12:43.896> Remembrance.

00:12:44.378 --> 00:12:46.400
So<00:12:44.699> they're,<00:12:45.069> they're<00:12:45.230> 2<00:12:45.342> books<00:12:45.807> on<00:12:45.903> that<00:12:46.048> topic.

00:12:46.850 --> 00:12:47.908
One's<00:12:47.026> a<00:12:47.090> prequel<00:12:47.411> to<00:12:47.507> the<00:12:47.652> other.

00:12:48.213 --> 00:12:50.154
And<00:12:49.095> yeah,<00:12:49.577> phenomenal.

00:12:50.395 --> 00:12:53.362
I<00:12:50.475> do<00:12:51.261> all<00:12:51.357> my<00:12:51.518> reading<00:12:52.384> primarily<00:12:52.881> as<00:12:53.025> audio.

00:12:53.474 --> 00:12:57.292
So—<00:12:53.603> Like<00:12:55.127> when<00:12:55.207> you're<00:12:55.448> walking<00:12:56.089> or—<00:12:56.394> Yeah,<00:12:56.458> yeah,<00:12:56.811> I<00:12:56.971> love<00:12:57.196> that.

00:12:57.998 --> 00:13:00.356
Yeah,<00:12:58.174> walking,<00:12:58.736> mostly<00:12:59.201> driving,<00:12:59.762> to<00:12:59.859> be<00:13:00.019> honest.

00:13:00.420 --> 00:13:05.569
I<00:13:00.436> mean,<00:13:00.725> trying<00:13:00.901> to<00:13:00.982> get<00:13:02.329> mainly<00:13:02.586> my<00:13:02.746> daughter<00:13:03.147> from<00:13:03.564> soccer<00:13:03.949> practice<00:13:04.430> or<00:13:04.575> games<00:13:04.912> back<00:13:05.152> and<00:13:05.232> forth.

00:13:05.633 --> 00:13:08.874
It's<00:13:05.794> a<00:13:05.874> fair<00:13:06.452> bit<00:13:06.580> of<00:13:06.676> a<00:13:06.740> drive,<00:13:06.997> so<00:13:07.157> I<00:13:07.221> can<00:13:07.366> get<00:13:07.703> a<00:13:08.104> ton<00:13:08.344> of<00:13:08.376> listening<00:13:08.826> in.

00:13:09.948 --> 00:13:12.547
Usually<00:13:10.301> not<00:13:11.071> on<00:13:11.408> 1x<00:13:11.825> speed<00:13:12.194> either.

00:13:12.893 --> 00:13:16.343
It's<00:13:13.282> actually<00:13:13.541> pretty<00:13:13.865> much<00:13:14.091> more<00:13:14.205> natural,<00:13:14.593> I<00:13:14.674> think,<00:13:14.982> on<00:13:15.079> 1.5x<00:13:16.002> speed.

00:13:16.602 --> 00:13:19.306
And<00:13:16.796> you<00:13:16.845> can<00:13:16.942> get<00:13:17.104> through<00:13:17.201> a<00:13:17.266> lot<00:13:17.444> of<00:13:17.509> books<00:13:18.399> through<00:13:18.561> the<00:13:18.707> course<00:13:18.966> of<00:13:19.047> a<00:13:19.128> year.

00:13:19.776 --> 00:13:20.473
That's<00:13:20.019> incredible.

00:13:20.667 --> 00:13:21.200
I<00:13:20.910> love<00:13:21.040> that.

00:13:21.715 --> 00:13:21.844
Yeah.

00:13:21.892 --> 00:13:22.681
Franz<00:13:22.198> Kafka.

00:13:22.761 --> 00:13:22.842
Wow.

00:13:23.486 --> 00:13:24.049
What<00:13:23.582> a<00:13:23.711> writer.

00:13:24.355 --> 00:13:24.998
That's<00:13:24.532> incredible.

00:13:25.320 --> 00:13:26.608
How<00:13:25.433> do<00:13:25.562> you<00:13:25.658> find<00:13:25.899> your<00:13:26.060> purpose?

00:13:26.945 --> 00:13:27.879
Like,<00:13:27.171> what<00:13:27.267> is<00:13:27.348> your<00:13:27.573> purpose?

00:13:27.927 --> 00:13:29.504
Like,<00:13:28.136> do<00:13:28.217> you—<00:13:28.378> I<00:13:28.394> mean,<00:13:28.555> do<00:13:28.619> you<00:13:28.700> ever<00:13:28.796> struggle<00:13:29.182> with<00:13:29.279> that?

00:13:31.762 --> 00:13:32.311
Not<00:13:32.020> really.

00:13:33.053 --> 00:13:34.973
And<00:13:33.456> I<00:13:33.537> just<00:13:33.698> try<00:13:33.811> to<00:13:33.957> keep<00:13:34.199> it<00:13:34.425> really<00:13:34.618> simple.

00:13:35.070 --> 00:13:37.975
I<00:13:35.102> mean,<00:13:35.328> I<00:13:35.409> have<00:13:35.958> really<00:13:36.135> just<00:13:36.377> two<00:13:36.539> things<00:13:36.926> I'm<00:13:37.362> focused<00:13:37.894> on.

00:13:38.607 --> 00:13:41.674
One<00:13:38.767> is<00:13:38.848> this<00:13:39.008> business,<00:13:39.346> and<00:13:39.426> we've<00:13:39.587> talked<00:13:39.827> about<00:13:40.229> that<00:13:40.454> mission<00:13:40.775> and<00:13:40.839> the<00:13:40.936> purpose<00:13:41.193> behind<00:13:41.578> it.

00:13:41.739 --> 00:13:43.489
And<00:13:42.478> second<00:13:42.895> is<00:13:43.024> my<00:13:43.120> family.

00:13:43.586 --> 00:13:45.369
And,<00:13:43.907> and<00:13:44.084> that's,<00:13:44.726> that's<00:13:45.192> it.

00:13:45.834 --> 00:13:52.612
I<00:13:46.075> admire<00:13:46.509> folks<00:13:46.878> who<00:13:46.975> can<00:13:47.457> do<00:13:47.617> more,<00:13:48.741> run<00:13:48.966> more<00:13:49.127> than<00:13:49.223> one<00:13:49.448> company,<00:13:50.267> have,<00:13:51.054> you<00:13:51.102> know,<00:13:51.456> varied<00:13:51.777> other<00:13:51.954> interests.

00:13:53.062 --> 00:13:57.142
I<00:13:53.239> think<00:13:53.496> for<00:13:53.656> me<00:13:53.865> it's<00:13:54.042> just<00:13:54.283> been<00:13:55.070> really<00:13:55.327> important<00:13:55.728> to<00:13:55.824> stay<00:13:56.274> really<00:13:56.531> focused.

00:13:57.655 --> 00:14:01.269
Maybe<00:13:57.832> that's<00:13:58.057> good,<00:13:58.298> maybe<00:13:58.523> it's<00:13:58.699> not,<00:13:59.037> I<00:13:59.053> don't<00:13:59.278> know,<00:13:59.503> but,<00:14:00.306> but<00:14:00.450> it<00:14:00.530> certainly<00:14:00.787> works<00:14:01.012> for<00:14:01.093> me.

00:14:01.767 --> 00:14:10.581
Is<00:14:01.912> there<00:14:02.297> a<00:14:02.859> moment<00:14:03.261> of<00:14:03.357> failure<00:14:04.241> that<00:14:04.867> you<00:14:05.204> look<00:14:05.445> back<00:14:05.750> on<00:14:05.927> now<00:14:06.489> where<00:14:06.634> you're<00:14:06.810> like,<00:14:07.657> man,<00:14:07.930> at<00:14:08.059> the<00:14:08.155> time<00:14:08.637> that<00:14:08.862> was<00:14:09.023> like<00:14:09.216> a<00:14:09.424> total<00:14:09.826> disaster.

00:14:11.272 --> 00:14:14.984
I<00:14:11.513> felt<00:14:11.754> like<00:14:11.995> I'd<00:14:12.799> failed<00:14:13.377> and<00:14:13.457> maybe<00:14:13.779> never<00:14:14.004> would<00:14:14.164> recover<00:14:14.646> from<00:14:14.887> it.

00:14:15.450 --> 00:14:19.038
But<00:14:15.562> now<00:14:15.787> you're<00:14:15.932> like,<00:14:16.109> man,<00:14:16.301> I'm<00:14:16.430> glad<00:14:16.591> that<00:14:16.800> happened<00:14:17.322> because<00:14:17.649> it<00:14:17.796> led<00:14:18.058> to<00:14:18.614> X.

00:14:19.431 --> 00:14:22.421
I<00:14:19.447> think<00:14:20.509> out<00:14:20.607> of<00:14:20.738> all<00:14:20.852> experiences,<00:14:21.572> there<00:14:21.653> are<00:14:21.735> lots<00:14:21.980> of<00:14:22.127> learnings.

00:14:23.112 --> 00:14:26.149
Nothing<00:14:23.433> is<00:14:23.578> ever<00:14:23.819> a<00:14:23.980> total<00:14:24.253> failure<00:14:25.120> or<00:14:25.265> a<00:14:25.361> total<00:14:25.618> success.

00:14:26.309 --> 00:14:27.787
There<00:14:26.711> are<00:14:26.807> ups<00:14:27.032> and<00:14:27.129> downs<00:14:27.354> with<00:14:27.450> everything.

00:14:27.852 --> 00:14:34.836
So<00:14:27.996> I<00:14:28.012> think<00:14:30.005> from<00:14:30.181> my<00:14:30.342> perspective,<00:14:30.824> being<00:14:31.049> humble<00:14:31.467> enough<00:14:31.772> to<00:14:31.933> just<00:14:32.109> look<00:14:32.270> back<00:14:32.527> and<00:14:32.836> say,<00:14:33.066> okay,<00:14:33.475> what<00:14:33.607> did<00:14:33.902> we<00:14:34.148> learn<00:14:34.377> from<00:14:34.541> this?

00:14:35.442 --> 00:14:36.311
I<00:14:35.475> think<00:14:35.623> is<00:14:35.770> really<00:14:35.934> important.

00:14:36.360 --> 00:14:51.335
So<00:14:37.654> you<00:14:37.750> know,<00:14:37.798> after<00:14:38.039> our<00:14:38.216> last<00:14:38.457> company,<00:14:39.244> we,<00:14:39.420> we<00:14:39.581> decided,<00:14:40.207> you<00:14:40.239> know,<00:14:40.384> shortly<00:14:40.849> thereafter,<00:14:41.379> got<00:14:41.588> really<00:14:41.813> good<00:14:41.925> advice<00:14:42.230> from<00:14:42.391> an<00:14:42.471> advisor<00:14:42.889> to<00:14:43.033> just,<00:14:43.338> hey,<00:14:43.435> sit<00:14:43.675> down<00:14:44.559> with<00:14:44.703> your<00:14:44.799> co-founder<00:14:45.747> and<00:14:45.907> write<00:14:46.084> down<00:14:46.229> what<00:14:46.389> you<00:14:46.469> learned<00:14:47.369> in<00:14:47.593> 2<00:14:47.674> or<00:14:47.706> 3<00:14:47.931> pages<00:14:48.477> and,<00:14:49.135> and<00:14:49.215> make<00:14:49.392> it<00:14:49.456> something<00:14:49.777> that<00:14:49.922> you<00:14:50.018> can,<00:14:50.259> you<00:14:50.419> can<00:14:50.564> look<00:14:50.725> back<00:14:50.965> upon.

00:14:51.608 --> 00:14:56.104
And,<00:14:51.929> um,<00:14:52.587> we<00:14:52.748> did<00:14:52.908> that,<00:14:53.213> and,<00:14:54.257> um,<00:14:54.755> that's<00:14:55.076> been<00:14:55.221> really<00:14:55.397> important<00:14:55.863> for<00:14:55.927> me.

00:14:56.280 --> 00:14:59.090
Every,<00:14:56.682> every<00:14:56.923> couple<00:14:57.164> of<00:14:57.228> weeks<00:14:57.549> I<00:14:57.806> reread<00:14:58.207> that<00:14:58.448> document.

00:14:59.315 --> 00:15:08.561
It<00:14:59.412> reminds<00:14:59.893> me<00:15:00.054> of,<00:15:00.921> of,<00:15:01.242> uh,<00:15:01.499> lessons,<00:15:02.222> lessons<00:15:02.607> learned<00:15:02.848> along<00:15:03.105> the<00:15:03.185> way,<00:15:03.506> and<00:15:03.586> it's<00:15:03.731> something<00:15:03.972> that<00:15:04.052> we<00:15:04.148> actually<00:15:04.405> share<00:15:04.775> with<00:15:05.834> with<00:15:06.139> all<00:15:06.299> of<00:15:06.379> our<00:15:06.636> new<00:15:06.780> employees<00:15:07.294> as<00:15:07.422> they<00:15:07.583> onboard<00:15:07.984> here<00:15:08.144> at<00:15:08.224> Ansel.

00:15:09.043 --> 00:15:13.663
What<00:15:09.299> are<00:15:09.524> like<00:15:09.684> the<00:15:09.909> values<00:15:10.326> of<00:15:10.390> the<00:15:10.486> company,<00:15:10.984> maybe<00:15:11.273> your<00:15:11.449> own<00:15:11.610> values<00:15:12.091> that<00:15:12.235> kind<00:15:12.396> of<00:15:12.476> guide<00:15:12.797> your<00:15:12.893> decision-making?

00:15:14.096 --> 00:15:22.856
You've<00:15:14.321> covered<00:15:14.802> a<00:15:15.043> decent<00:15:15.300> amount<00:15:15.556> of<00:15:15.685> them<00:15:15.781> here<00:15:16.407> around<00:15:16.984> like,<00:15:17.289> hey,<00:15:18.107> we're<00:15:18.268> trying<00:15:18.669> to<00:15:18.910> fix<00:15:19.295> this<00:15:19.535> enormous<00:15:20.113> problem<00:15:20.899> in<00:15:21.075> the<00:15:21.621> U.S.<00:15:22.102> healthcare<00:15:22.439> system.

00:15:23.466 --> 00:15:25.584
But<00:15:23.562> like<00:15:23.867> overall,<00:15:24.589> like<00:15:24.830> what<00:15:24.990> are<00:15:25.070> your<00:15:25.231> values?

00:15:25.632 --> 00:15:27.140
What<00:15:25.792> drives<00:15:26.129> the<00:15:26.209> company's<00:15:26.691> values?

00:15:27.477 --> 00:15:37.280
Yeah,<00:15:27.653> we,<00:15:27.894> um,<00:15:28.440> you<00:15:28.536> know,<00:15:28.760> we,<00:15:29.097> we<00:15:29.659> boiled<00:15:29.900> it<00:15:29.980> down<00:15:30.236> to<00:15:30.381> 4<00:15:30.622> things<00:15:30.846> that<00:15:30.942> I<00:15:31.199> think<00:15:31.343> are<00:15:31.424> really<00:15:31.664> important<00:15:32.065> for<00:15:32.210> us,<00:15:32.386> and<00:15:32.467> these<00:15:32.691> are<00:15:32.723> not,<00:15:33.172> um,<00:15:33.670> novel<00:15:34.280> definitely<00:15:34.740> one<00:15:35.000> to<00:15:35.200> want<00:15:35.280> to<00:15:35.380> learn<00:15:35.580> from<00:15:35.780> others<00:15:36.180> as<00:15:36.360> much<00:15:36.560> as<00:15:36.780> possible.

00:15:37.300 --> 00:15:39.040
The<00:15:37.840> first<00:15:38.020> is<00:15:38.260> hardworking.

00:15:39.040 --> 00:15:44.300
I<00:15:39.041> think<00:15:39.240> that<00:15:40.040> any<00:15:40.700> problem<00:15:41.100> worth<00:15:41.360> solving<00:15:41.780> requires<00:15:42.380> hard<00:15:42.780> work,<00:15:43.020> no<00:15:43.200> matter<00:15:43.340> how<00:15:43.540> you<00:15:43.600> cut<00:15:43.800> it.

00:15:44.360 --> 00:15:48.460
And,<00:15:44.540> you<00:15:44.541> know,<00:15:44.660> hard<00:15:44.860> work<00:15:45.000> doesn't<00:15:45.200> always<00:15:45.480> mean<00:15:45.760> long<00:15:46.120> hours,<00:15:46.660> but<00:15:46.980> it<00:15:47.460> sometimes<00:15:47.920> does.

00:15:48.460 --> 00:15:50.560
And<00:15:48.620> it<00:15:49.100> certainly<00:15:49.340> means<00:15:49.580> working<00:15:49.860> smart.

00:15:50.560 --> 00:15:54.920
But<00:15:50.880> I<00:15:50.960> think<00:15:51.160> making<00:15:51.420> sure<00:15:51.640> that<00:15:51.800> people<00:15:51.980> know<00:15:52.240> that<00:15:52.380> if<00:15:52.460> you're<00:15:52.680> going<00:15:52.720> to<00:15:52.840> be<00:15:53.120> on<00:15:53.280> this<00:15:53.440> journey,<00:15:53.780> it's<00:15:54.060> going<00:15:54.240> to<00:15:54.300> be<00:15:54.460> hard<00:15:54.680> work.

00:15:55.000 --> 00:15:57.500
And,<00:15:55.800> you<00:15:56.260> know,<00:15:56.340> that's<00:15:56.660> an<00:15:56.740> important<00:15:57.040> value.

00:15:57.500 --> 00:15:59.430
The<00:15:57.620> second<00:15:57.860> is<00:15:58.260> about<00:15:58.520> being<00:15:58.780> helpful.

00:15:59.560 --> 00:16:03.780
You<00:15:59.580> know,<00:15:59.740> obviously,<00:16:00.160> one,<00:16:00.570> our<00:16:01.320> mission<00:16:01.760> as<00:16:01.920> a<00:16:02.160> company<00:16:02.260> is<00:16:02.500> fundamentally<00:16:02.860> helpful<00:16:03.320> to<00:16:03.480> people.

00:16:03.780 --> 00:16:07.544
But<00:16:04.040> even<00:16:04.260> within<00:16:04.280> the<00:16:04.300> organization,<00:16:06.356> How<00:16:06.452> do<00:16:06.517> you<00:16:06.613> see<00:16:06.854> around<00:16:07.159> corners?

00:16:08.202 --> 00:16:16.100
How<00:16:08.379> can<00:16:08.523> you<00:16:08.780> help<00:16:09.021> a<00:16:09.085> colleague<00:16:09.583> by<00:16:10.129> making<00:16:10.385> them<00:16:10.530> aware<00:16:10.771> of<00:16:10.803> something<00:16:11.188> that<00:16:11.333> they<00:16:11.365> may<00:16:11.525> not<00:16:11.766> know<00:16:12.633> that<00:16:13.419> you<00:16:13.516> think<00:16:13.757> could<00:16:13.901> help<00:16:14.142> them<00:16:14.383> save<00:16:14.639> time<00:16:14.977> or<00:16:15.105> be<00:16:15.506> more<00:16:15.683> effective?

00:16:16.181 --> 00:16:19.134
So<00:16:16.341> that<00:16:17.128> core<00:16:17.288> tenet<00:16:17.593> of<00:16:17.690> being<00:16:17.834> helpful<00:16:18.187> is<00:16:18.332> really<00:16:18.572> important.

00:16:19.536 --> 00:16:22.762
I<00:16:19.552> think<00:16:19.696> being<00:16:19.857> humble<00:16:20.403> is<00:16:21.045> also<00:16:21.462> really<00:16:22.024> key<00:16:22.281> for<00:16:22.570> us.

00:16:23.613 --> 00:16:34.191
I<00:16:23.774> think<00:16:23.870> when<00:16:24.014> you<00:16:24.271> approach<00:16:24.833> things<00:16:25.058> from<00:16:25.218> a<00:16:25.235> perspective<00:16:25.732> of<00:16:25.796> being<00:16:26.021> humble,<00:16:26.358> then<00:16:27.000> you're<00:16:27.161> willing<00:16:27.402> to<00:16:27.482> learn<00:16:27.787> and<00:16:27.883> you're<00:16:28.028> willing<00:16:28.204> to<00:16:28.285> be<00:16:28.429> curious<00:16:29.071> and<00:16:29.168> you're<00:16:29.569> willing<00:16:29.890> to<00:16:31.335> take<00:16:31.511> a<00:16:31.576> position<00:16:32.121> but<00:16:32.298> be<00:16:32.523> open<00:16:32.860> to<00:16:33.502> to<00:16:33.646> it<00:16:33.742> being<00:16:33.902> wrong.

00:16:34.447 --> 00:16:36.210
And<00:16:34.784> I<00:16:34.928> think<00:16:35.505> that's<00:16:35.809> okay.

00:16:36.530 --> 00:16:40.247
And<00:16:36.867> I<00:16:36.947> think<00:16:37.171> everyone<00:16:37.572> having<00:16:37.908> that<00:16:38.084> approach<00:16:38.453> to<00:16:38.549> things,<00:16:38.853> I<00:16:38.886> think,<00:16:39.414> is<00:16:39.575> really<00:16:39.735> important.

00:16:40.696 --> 00:16:43.084
And<00:16:41.017> the<00:16:41.097> final<00:16:41.369> one<00:16:41.577> for<00:16:41.738> us<00:16:41.898> here<00:16:42.058> is<00:16:42.154> to<00:16:42.234> have<00:16:42.411> high<00:16:42.555> standards.

00:16:43.180 --> 00:16:55.550
I<00:16:43.196> think<00:16:43.436> that<00:16:44.958> there<00:16:45.423> are<00:16:45.583> lots<00:16:45.840> of<00:16:45.984> things<00:16:46.304> working<00:16:46.641> against<00:16:47.426> a<00:16:47.442> new<00:16:48.003> innovation<00:16:48.708> or<00:16:48.820> a<00:16:48.964> young<00:16:49.285> company,<00:16:50.246> but<00:16:50.550> one<00:16:50.647> of<00:16:50.711> them<00:16:50.807> shouldn't<00:16:52.153> be<00:16:53.274> anything<00:16:53.915> outside<00:16:54.396> of<00:16:54.476> having<00:16:54.797> a<00:16:54.877> high<00:16:54.989> standard.

00:16:55.998 --> 00:17:00.549
So<00:16:56.559> everything<00:16:56.896> that<00:16:56.976> we<00:16:57.200> create,<00:16:57.777> everything<00:16:58.081> that<00:16:58.178> we<00:16:58.338> do,<00:16:58.819> we<00:16:58.899> should<00:16:59.203> be<00:16:59.363> trying<00:16:59.604> to<00:16:59.684> do<00:16:59.780> it<00:16:59.860> the<00:16:59.924> best<00:17:00.100> we<00:17:00.245> can.

00:17:01.384 --> 00:17:06.091
There'll<00:17:01.544> be<00:17:01.625> mistakes,<00:17:02.589> but<00:17:02.733> we<00:17:02.814> should<00:17:02.990> learn<00:17:03.167> from<00:17:03.376> them<00:17:03.617> and<00:17:03.794> continue<00:17:04.195> to<00:17:04.436> drive<00:17:04.838> to<00:17:04.999> as<00:17:05.079> high<00:17:05.240> a<00:17:05.256> standard<00:17:05.642> as<00:17:05.722> we<00:17:05.802> can.

00:17:06.188 --> 00:17:09.691
So<00:17:06.590> those<00:17:06.766> are<00:17:06.831> the<00:17:07.489> 4<00:17:07.666> values<00:17:08.132> that<00:17:08.309> are<00:17:08.855> most<00:17:09.176> key<00:17:09.417> for<00:17:09.642> us.

00:17:10.301 --> 00:17:12.213
How<00:17:10.462> would<00:17:10.687> your<00:17:10.783> friends<00:17:11.169> describe<00:17:11.667> you,<00:17:11.811> do<00:17:11.892> you<00:17:11.988> think?

00:17:12.293 --> 00:17:13.209
I<00:17:12.567> don't<00:17:12.952> know.

00:17:13.499 --> 00:17:14.655
I<00:17:13.579> haven't,<00:17:14.061> I<00:17:14.077> haven't<00:17:14.382> asked.

00:17:14.720 --> 00:17:17.371
I<00:17:14.736> mean,<00:17:14.880> hopefully,<00:17:15.523> hopefully<00:17:15.909> those<00:17:16.166> 4<00:17:16.391> things<00:17:16.712> would<00:17:16.889> come<00:17:17.274> up.

00:17:17.515 --> 00:17:20.359
Otherwise<00:17:18.817> I'd<00:17:19.219> be<00:17:19.379> concerned<00:17:20.102> that—.

00:17:20.488 --> 00:17:22.528
I<00:17:20.649> never<00:17:20.986> asked<00:17:21.147> that<00:17:21.307> question<00:17:21.629> in<00:17:21.661> my<00:17:21.789> life,<00:17:22.111> by<00:17:22.255> the<00:17:22.336> way.

00:17:22.753 --> 00:17:24.376
It<00:17:22.898> was<00:17:22.994> like<00:17:23.091> here,<00:17:23.316> they're<00:17:23.460> like,<00:17:23.653> make<00:17:23.798> sure<00:17:23.878> you're<00:17:24.039> asking<00:17:24.264> this.

00:17:24.698 --> 00:17:26.931
I<00:17:24.730> was<00:17:24.987> like,<00:17:25.147> oh,<00:17:25.308> that's<00:17:25.501> actually<00:17:25.790> a<00:17:25.887> really<00:17:26.192> great<00:17:26.433> question.

00:17:27.413 --> 00:17:28.167
It<00:17:27.509> is<00:17:27.654> a<00:17:27.718> great<00:17:27.878> question.

00:17:28.216 --> 00:17:32.406
I<00:17:28.296> mean,<00:17:28.681> I<00:17:28.761> hope<00:17:28.954> it's<00:17:29.099> those<00:17:29.339> 4<00:17:29.564> things,<00:17:29.741> and<00:17:29.837> if<00:17:29.966> it's<00:17:30.078> not,<00:17:31.587> then<00:17:31.732> I've<00:17:31.828> got<00:17:31.989> some<00:17:32.133> work<00:17:32.246> to<00:17:32.374> do.

00:17:32.952 --> 00:17:33.643
That's<00:17:33.193> incredible.

00:17:33.819 --> 00:17:35.585
A<00:17:34.156> couple<00:17:34.397> more<00:17:34.799> questions<00:17:35.184> for<00:17:35.280> you<00:17:35.441> here.

00:17:35.666 --> 00:17:37.897
How<00:17:35.778> are<00:17:35.906> you<00:17:36.003> feeling<00:17:36.420> about<00:17:36.822> the<00:17:36.902> state<00:17:37.191> of<00:17:37.271> the<00:17:37.432> economy?

00:17:38.170 --> 00:17:40.820
I<00:17:38.235> mean,<00:17:38.395> we're<00:17:38.636> halfway<00:17:39.037> through<00:17:39.134> the<00:17:39.214> year,<00:17:39.358> a<00:17:39.375> little<00:17:39.615> over<00:17:39.760> halfway<00:17:40.177> through<00:17:40.338> the<00:17:40.482> year<00:17:40.739> now.

00:17:41.285 --> 00:17:53.054
Obviously,<00:17:42.200> some<00:17:43.549> chaos<00:17:44.191> or<00:17:44.336> uncertainty<00:17:44.914> in<00:17:44.994> the<00:17:45.074> first<00:17:45.652> half<00:17:45.813> of<00:17:45.877> this<00:17:46.118> year,<00:17:46.600> particularly<00:17:47.065> around<00:17:47.306> tariffs,<00:17:48.205> which<00:17:48.350> I<00:17:48.382> don't<00:17:48.607> know<00:17:48.832> that<00:17:49.233> that<00:17:49.554> touched<00:17:49.827> you<00:17:50.052> too<00:17:50.196> much<00:17:50.839> in<00:17:50.935> your<00:17:51.176> industry,<00:17:51.657> but<00:17:51.802> how<00:17:51.882> are<00:17:52.043> you<00:17:52.123> feeling<00:17:52.364> about<00:17:52.605> it<00:17:52.685> overall?

00:17:53.825 --> 00:17:58.465
And<00:17:53.970> what<00:17:54.082> are<00:17:54.210> your<00:17:54.451> expectations<00:17:55.431> for<00:17:55.591> the<00:17:55.672> rest<00:17:55.928> of<00:17:55.977> the<00:17:56.137> year<00:17:56.458> from<00:17:56.635> like<00:17:56.811> a<00:17:56.844> macroeconomic<00:17:57.984> perspective?

00:17:58.977 --> 00:18:20.440
Before<00:17:59.236> I<00:17:59.301> answer<00:17:59.609> that<00:17:59.852> full<00:18:00.014> question,<00:18:00.354> but<00:18:00.435> just<00:18:00.662> on<00:18:00.922> an<00:18:01.148> assumption<00:18:01.732> you<00:18:01.813> made<00:18:01.975> there<00:18:02.137> that<00:18:02.769> tariffs<00:18:03.174> may<00:18:03.287> not<00:18:04.016> impact<00:18:04.486> us<00:18:04.729> directly,<00:18:05.199> and<00:18:05.297> while<00:18:05.459> that's<00:18:05.848> true,<00:18:07.027> but<00:18:07.189> they<00:18:07.351> indirectly<00:18:07.917> do<00:18:08.176> because<00:18:09.552> we<00:18:09.632> have<00:18:09.778> customers<00:18:10.442> who<00:18:10.603> are<00:18:11.412> dealing<00:18:11.736> with<00:18:11.898> that<00:18:12.124> economic<00:18:12.561> uncertainty,<00:18:13.208> which<00:18:13.435> means<00:18:13.678> that<00:18:13.839> they<00:18:14.713> might<00:18:14.907> have<00:18:15.069> to<00:18:15.134> make<00:18:15.360> cuts<00:18:15.619> in<00:18:15.700> their<00:18:15.830> workforces<00:18:16.735> or<00:18:18.515> provide<00:18:18.935> less<00:18:19.178> benefits<00:18:19.598> to<00:18:19.760> their<00:18:19.906> employees.

00:18:20.537 --> 00:18:22.316
So<00:18:20.650> it<00:18:20.714> has<00:18:20.876> a<00:18:20.957> direct<00:18:21.281> impact<00:18:21.911> on<00:18:22.235> us.

00:18:22.413 --> 00:18:32.404
In<00:18:22.494> fact,<00:18:23.206> if<00:18:23.319> you<00:18:23.448> look<00:18:23.772> outside<00:18:24.128> of<00:18:24.192> payroll,<00:18:24.758> the<00:18:25.346> second<00:18:25.742> largest<00:18:26.137> expense<00:18:26.565> for<00:18:26.730> most<00:18:27.060> organizations<00:18:27.373> are<00:18:27.406> their<00:18:27.587> benefits,<00:18:27.883> of<00:18:27.916> which<00:18:27.966> health<00:18:28.065> insurance<00:18:28.262> is<00:18:28.295> the<00:18:28.328> number<00:18:28.444> one<00:18:30.542> item<00:18:31.409> and<00:18:31.730> things<00:18:31.971> around<00:18:32.228> that.

00:18:32.485 --> 00:18:34.299
So,<00:18:32.950> so<00:18:33.031> I<00:18:33.111> think<00:18:33.255> that<00:18:33.352> there's<00:18:33.528> a<00:18:33.593> broad<00:18:33.849> impact.

00:18:34.636 --> 00:18:39.967
But,<00:18:34.797> but<00:18:34.941> putting<00:18:35.118> that<00:18:35.278> aside,<00:18:35.680> to<00:18:35.824> your<00:18:36.242> sort<00:18:36.418> of<00:18:36.499> thrust<00:18:36.756> of<00:18:36.804> your<00:18:36.964> question,<00:18:37.671> um,<00:18:37.863> I<00:18:38.008> think<00:18:38.233> uncertainty<00:18:38.811> is<00:18:39.036> generally<00:18:39.469> a<00:18:39.533> bad<00:18:39.854> thing.

00:18:40.400 --> 00:18:48.621
Uh,<00:18:40.802> I<00:18:41.219> think<00:18:41.605> one<00:18:41.781> thing<00:18:41.942> that's<00:18:42.166> made<00:18:42.728> America<00:18:43.162> so<00:18:43.563> successful<00:18:44.976> is<00:18:45.169> its<00:18:45.394> predictability,<00:18:46.742> um,<00:18:47.320> not<00:18:47.722> its<00:18:47.947> uncertainty.

00:18:49.071 --> 00:18:52.796
And<00:18:49.472> I<00:18:49.568> think<00:18:49.873> that,<00:18:50.275> um,<00:18:50.532> I<00:18:50.612> think<00:18:50.789> it's<00:18:51.013> important<00:18:51.479> that<00:18:51.640> we<00:18:51.913> appreciate<00:18:52.539> that.

00:18:52.844 --> 00:19:01.361
And<00:18:53.566> when<00:18:53.727> there's<00:18:53.903> lack<00:18:54.128> of<00:18:54.225> clarity,<00:18:55.011> um,<00:18:55.268> that<00:18:55.589> causes<00:18:56.696> decisions<00:18:57.193> to<00:18:57.338> be<00:18:57.498> delayed,<00:18:58.540> and<00:18:58.716> worse,<00:18:59.502> it<00:18:59.614> might<00:18:59.838> cause<00:19:00.079> the<00:19:00.159> wrong<00:19:00.383> decisions<00:19:00.736> to<00:19:00.880> be<00:19:00.960> made.

00:19:01.586 --> 00:19:08.302
And,<00:19:02.067> um,<00:19:02.307> that<00:19:02.467> affects,<00:19:02.948> I<00:19:03.044> think,<00:19:03.269> all<00:19:03.365> sorts<00:19:03.686> of<00:19:03.766> companies,<00:19:04.166> especially<00:19:04.567> young<00:19:04.728> ones<00:19:05.048> that<00:19:05.224> have<00:19:05.930> less<00:19:06.154> cushion<00:19:06.411> to<00:19:06.555> work<00:19:06.731> with<00:19:07.437> than<00:19:07.597> larger<00:19:07.918> companies.

00:19:08.815 --> 00:19:17.632
Finally,<00:19:09.280> uh,<00:19:09.456> we<00:19:09.617> end<00:19:09.761> every<00:19:09.921> interview<00:19:10.258> with<00:19:10.402> the<00:19:10.482> same<00:19:10.739> question,<00:19:11.284> and<00:19:11.460> that<00:19:11.701> is,<00:19:12.005> at<00:19:12.101> CEO.com,<00:19:13.063> we<00:19:13.224> believe<00:19:13.464> the<00:19:13.544> chances<00:19:14.089> one<00:19:14.346> gives<00:19:15.468> is<00:19:15.628> just<00:19:15.933> as<00:19:16.013> important<00:19:16.349> as<00:19:16.446> the<00:19:16.574> chances<00:19:16.975> one<00:19:17.135> takes.

00:19:18.257 --> 00:19:21.094
When<00:19:18.433> you<00:19:18.658> hear<00:19:18.834> that,<00:19:19.058> who<00:19:19.219> gave<00:19:19.395> you<00:19:19.491> a<00:19:19.555> chance<00:19:19.876> to<00:19:19.956> get<00:19:20.133> you<00:19:20.277> to<00:19:20.357> where<00:19:20.517> you<00:19:20.678> are<00:19:20.822> today?

00:19:21.383 --> 00:19:22.409
Uh,<00:19:21.559> well,<00:19:21.623> I'll<00:19:21.719> tell<00:19:21.864> you<00:19:21.944> a<00:19:21.960> quick<00:19:22.120> story.

00:19:22.457 --> 00:19:27.971
So,<00:19:23.226> um,<00:19:23.948> the<00:19:24.028> first<00:19:24.204> company<00:19:24.669> that,<00:19:25.006> that,<00:19:25.390> uh,<00:19:25.487> my<00:19:25.647> brother<00:19:25.855> and<00:19:25.903> I<00:19:26.032> co-founded,<00:19:26.769> we,<00:19:26.929> we<00:19:27.090> both<00:19:27.410> dropped<00:19:27.651> outta<00:19:27.795> school.

00:19:28.228 --> 00:19:32.673
Uh,<00:19:28.998> and<00:19:29.399> we<00:19:29.560> really<00:19:29.800> had,<00:19:30.121> you<00:19:30.234> know,<00:19:30.298> no<00:19:30.458> idea<00:19:31.004> what<00:19:31.261> venture<00:19:31.517> capital<00:19:32.063> really<00:19:32.368> was.

00:19:33.090 --> 00:19:40.247
Uh,<00:19:33.427> and<00:19:33.571> we<00:19:33.732> were<00:19:33.989> living<00:19:34.293> in,<00:19:34.695> in<00:19:34.855> Edmonton,<00:19:35.256> Alberta,<00:19:35.738> so<00:19:36.155> like<00:19:36.380> kind<00:19:36.556> of<00:19:36.636> like<00:19:36.861> nowhere<00:19:37.214> near<00:19:37.679> the<00:19:37.760> center<00:19:38.080> of<00:19:38.241> the<00:19:38.385> action,<00:19:39.107> uh,<00:19:39.284> in<00:19:39.428> the<00:19:39.525> late<00:19:39.765> '90s.

00:19:40.471 --> 00:19:48.270
And,<00:19:40.792> um,<00:19:42.188> our<00:19:42.317> approach<00:19:42.734> to<00:19:42.894> raising<00:19:43.280> capital<00:19:43.681> at<00:19:43.761> the<00:19:43.857> time<00:19:44.178> was<00:19:44.419> to<00:19:44.980> call<00:19:45.398> incessantly<00:19:46.248> until<00:19:46.842> someone<00:19:47.307> would<00:19:47.452> call<00:19:47.692> us<00:19:47.869> back.

00:19:48.655 --> 00:19:58.013
And<00:19:49.056> I<00:19:49.233> remember<00:19:49.698> one,<00:19:50.180> uh,<00:19:50.420> one<00:19:50.741> investor<00:19:51.880> we<00:19:52.185> called<00:19:52.538> and<00:19:52.683> called<00:19:52.940> and<00:19:53.084> called,<00:19:53.549> and,<00:19:53.870> and<00:19:54.111> he<00:19:54.207> eventually<00:19:54.753> met<00:19:54.993> us<00:19:55.796> I<00:19:55.973> think<00:19:56.133> primarily<00:19:56.695> to<00:19:56.856> just<00:19:57.081> like<00:19:57.418> get<00:19:57.659> rid<00:19:57.820> of<00:19:57.916> us.

00:19:58.848 --> 00:20:01.756
And<00:20:00.615> that<00:20:00.856> worked<00:20:01.097> itself<00:20:01.579> out.

00:20:01.820 --> 00:20:03.699
And<00:20:01.932> it<00:20:02.061> was<00:20:02.157> the<00:20:02.302> first<00:20:02.559> million<00:20:02.880> dollars<00:20:03.201> we<00:20:03.362> raised.

00:20:03.764 --> 00:20:08.502
