# Napoleon Hill Institute Chairman David Meltzer: Why wisdom beats wealth

# What David Meltzer learned at his mother's door

David Meltzer describes his life as three worlds. The world of not enough, the world of just enough, and the one he lives in now. It took losing more than $100 million to reach the third.

On the CEO.com podcast, he told the story of how it all fell apart, and what his mother said when it did.

Meltzer was raised by a single mother who taught second grade and stocked greeting card displays in convenience stores at night so the family could afford dinner. She had one vision for his future: doctor, lawyer, or failure. He had a simpler one. "I just wanted to be rich," he said. "I wanted to buy my mom a house."

His first plan was professional football, which ended when Christian Okoye ran him over in college. His second was law school at Tulane, chosen because oil and gas litigators earned the most, and in 1992 it produced a $150,000 offer to become one. He turned it down to sell legal research online instead. His mother told him the internet was a fad. As Meltzer tells it, Justice Scalia said no one would ever do legal research on a computer. Nine months out of law school, he was a millionaire, and a few years later, he says, the company sold for $3.4 billion.

The money moved him into the world of just enough. It did not fix him. "Everything became transactional," he said. "I slowly lost my values." Then came Samsung, then Steinberg, and then it was gone, all of it, including the house he had bought his mother.

He knocked on her door to tell her. She asked if everyone was okay. She asked if he needed money. She asked what she could do to help.

"Why is God punishing me?" he asked.

"God doesn't punish," she said. "God only protects, promotes, loves, and perfects."

He told her he didn't believe in God. She smiled. "Oh, son. You believe in God. You just believe in the wrong God."

Meltzer has spent the 20 years since trying to line up his thoughts, words, actions, beliefs, and feelings with what he calls his divine direction. Someone once told him he was God's pencil. He took it as a compliment. The irony is not lost on him that he has made more money than ever. The difference, he says, is what the money is for. His mission now is to empower more than one billion people to make a lot of money, help other people, and enjoy their lives.

Ask Meltzer about his day, and you get a theology of time. God guarantees him 24 hours, he says, except the last one. So he assigns minimums. Sleep, health, family, faith, studying time, studying finance: roughly 12 hours of every day, with sleep taking the largest share. The other 12 are flexible. If he misses a commitment, it becomes the next day's first priority. He never misses twice.

He draws a line between discipline and devotion. Plenty of people are disciplined at work and absent at home, he argues, or grind for money while their health erodes. Devotion, in his telling, is alignment, and he credits 90 percent of his progress to those minimums rather than to anything he did in reaction to circumstances.

His read on AI is that it makes knowledge cheap and wisdom expensive. "Knowing information isn't the same thing as knowing what to do with it," he said. The harder problem is speed. He remembers stadium projects where the challenge was picking technology for a building that would open five years later, and he points out that aircraft carriers take 17 years to build. "Today that same problem exists everywhere. Only now it isn't seventeen years. Sometimes it's seventeen days." Leaders used to have time to align a team, execute, and adjust. Now the ground moves before the explanation is finished.

His new book, ["Don't Do Business with Dicks"](https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Dont-Do-Business-with-Dicks/David-Meltzer/9781637748053?ref=ceo.com), takes its title from a standing instruction Steinberg gave him: don't negotiate to the last penny, always be fair, and don't do business with dicks. The title was originally the subtitle. His publisher wanted something people would pick up in an airport, and got it. "You can't sell a secret," Meltzer said.

Every CEO.com interview ends with the same question, because the chances one gives matter as much as the chances one takes. Who gave you a chance?
