# Do the right thing and everything else will follow

Greg Ho lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. That is the first reason he gives for why the [West Harlem Innovation Network](https://westharleminnovationnetwork.com/?ref=ceo.com) is in West Harlem and not somewhere else.

"The proximity," he said on the CEO.com Podcast. "Something new. So I said, no one's tried. There's no model to follow. I have to be there."

Ho is 72\. He is president and co-founder of Spring Mountain Capital, a New York investment firm he [started in 2001 with John L. "Launny" Steffens](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/opportunity-zone-ecosystem-to-create-and-grow-technology-companies-in-harlem-301273999.html?ref=ceo.com) after 16 years at McKinsey & Company, where he was the firm's first lawyer and eventually its chief financial officer. The firm started in special situations and has since added growth equity, municipal bonds, and a fund-of-funds business. WHIN is the part of the firm Ho now spends most of his time on, and it is the part nobody has proven yet.

The idea uses the federal Opportunity Zone program, which gives investors tax benefits on capital deployed in designated low-income census tracts. Most Opportunity Zone projects have been real estate. Spring Mountain [announced WHIN in April 2021](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/opportunity-zone-ecosystem-to-create-and-grow-technology-companies-in-harlem-301273999.html?ref=ceo.com) as a way to put Opportunity Zone capital into operating businesses instead, specifically companies working on health and education outcomes for underrepresented minorities. WHIN [describes itself](https://westharleminnovationnetwork.com/?ref=ceo.com) as a studio model focused on people rather than buildings, with a goal of growing four to seven platform companies and developing the local workforce through apprenticeships and internships. Ho is listed as its founder and senior managing partner.

Ho's test for what WHIN will fund has three parts, and the first rules out most companies.

"In the West Harlem Innovation Network, we will target companies that we believe will have a positive impact on the health and educational well-being of underrepresented minorities. So, if you're not a company that can explain that, we're not looking at you."

The second part is the founders. He said he spends more time on them than on the idea, and that there is no checklist for it. "You have to meet and talk with the individual to really believe that that is in their heart and in their mind and is what motivates them." The third is control. WHIN funds companies from formation and intends to keep funding them, on the condition that they keep creating higher-paying jobs for people from the community. He does not want to hand a company off to a later investor who might drop the mission.

Ho's own focus inside WHIN is life sciences, and inside that, [neurodegenerative disease](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/opportunity-zone-ecosystem-to-create-and-grow-technology-companies-in-harlem-301273999.html?ref=ceo.com). He gets about 1,000 emails a day, most of them research feeds and paper alerts, and estimates he reads about six hours a day. He is interested in what artificial intelligence can do with the data coming out of newer research tools that work at the subcellular level. One company Spring Mountain funded had 100 times more data than a larger competitor when the firm invested. Three years later, it had 1,000 times more. "This is more data than scientists are able to process," he said. He expects AI, and eventually quantum computing, to find patterns in it that people cannot. He is less worried about AI itself than about gene editing. "I think tools other than artificial intelligence are going to cause things to get out of hand, such as CRISPR, gene modification, and so forth."

What WHIN has not done, five years after its announcement, is name a public success. Ho did not cite a portfolio company by name on the podcast, and the firm's own materials describe the strategy rather than its results. Ho seems aware of this. He said he had not seen anyone else try a studio model inside a community rather than an incubator that pulls talent out of one, and that the problems WHIN is going after have "a whole pile of parts to the equation." It is a bet. He is making it with his own reputation and his firm's capital, which is more than most people making similar speeches have done.

The McKinsey years explain some of the confidence. Ho joined in 1982 to run the firm's finances and tax planning, not to consult. His assignment was to take McKinsey from about eight countries into the world's top 40 economies.

"The task ahead of me was opening offices in 32 new countries, which took me 16 years. So, 16 years, 32 countries later, I hit my target retirement date of 45 and announced I would leave the firm."

He had set that date years in advance. On the podcast, he said he left in 1996\. [His published bio](https://medium.com/authority-magazine/social-impact-investors-how-of-spring-greg-ho-of-mountain-capital-is-helping-to-empower-dc446de00c74?ref=ceo.com) says 1998\. Either way, he became a principal and CFO, sat on the investment committee, and with several other partners co-founded the McKinsey Investment Office, which handled more than $1 billion in partner and employee assets. Then he spent a few years as a private investor before founding Spring Mountain, which had about [$1.8 billion under management as of 2024](https://medium.com/authority-magazine/social-impact-investors-how-of-spring-greg-ho-of-mountain-capital-is-helping-to-empower-dc446de00c74?ref=ceo.com).

He credits the firm's founder-in-practice, Marvin Bower, with the principle he still hires on. Bower sent every new McKinsey employee a private book called Perspectives on McKinsey. "Marvin believed that the firm should not be operated on a financial basis. He was a believer in the philosophy that if you do the right thing, everything else will follow." Ho also named Jon Katzenbach, a former partner, as the author of the one book he would push on anyone running a team, The Wisdom of Teams. He said it matters more now that teams are remote. His other recommendations were Max Tegmark's Life 3.0, which he is rereading, Charan Ranganath's Why We Remember, which he had not yet started, and Amy Chua's World on Fire, which he called prescient about what happens when market-dominant minorities and politics collide.

His father was a baker who held two jobs and started work at four in the morning. Ho gets up at 4:30\. For 18 weeks each spring and fall, that hour goes to marathon training. He is not optimistic about the country. "Unfortunately, I'm not very optimistic at all," he said, and then said the pessimism is what makes WHIN feel urgent to him. His fix is not a policy. It is getting people into the same room, and ideally the same community, often enough that they stop seeing each other as threats.

The CEO.com Podcast ends every episode with the same question: who gave you a chance? Ho went back to the 1960s and a Yale admissions director whose name he could not remember, who decided to admit more underrepresented minorities. Ho was otherwise headed to the University of Hawaii, a Catholic college on the West Coast, or the military.

"Just because you're accepted into the organization does not mean that you automatically get there. There are a lot of other steps. So, seeing the people who crossed the lines and decided to reach out was what caused it, and that was totally fortuitous."

00:00:34.898 --> 00:00:41.892
We<00:00:34.930> had<00:00:35.010> a<00:00:35.074> really<00:00:35.299> great<00:00:35.476> conversation<00:00:36.119> on<00:00:36.280> all<00:00:36.505> of<00:00:36.730> this,<00:00:36.923> including<00:00:37.714> artificial<00:00:38.375> intelligence,<00:00:38.956> how<00:00:39.101> that's<00:00:39.278> going<00:00:39.375> to<00:00:39.488> affect<00:00:39.811> life<00:00:39.988> sciences,<00:00:41.117> and<00:00:41.198> all<00:00:41.295> sorts<00:00:41.617> of<00:00:41.746> things.

I<00:00:42.005> mean,<00:00:42.069> it<00:00:42.101> was<00:00:42.246> a<00:00:42.327> pretty<00:00:42.553> wide-ranging,<00:00:43.250> very<00:00:43.605> interesting<00:00:44.155> conversation.

00:00:44.898 --> 00:00:47.372
This,<00:00:45.222> this,<00:00:45.626> this<00:00:45.804> is<00:00:45.884> a<00:00:46.030> very,<00:00:46.337> very<00:00:46.579> impressive<00:00:47.081> man.

00:00:48.196 --> 00:00:49.715
Um,<00:00:48.552> so<00:00:49.182> let's<00:00:49.344> get<00:00:49.505> to<00:00:49.586> him.

00:00:50.136 --> 00:00:50.702
Here's<00:00:50.314> Greg<00:00:50.540> Ho.

00:01:00.432 --> 00:01:02.523
Greg,<00:01:00.818> thank<00:01:01.060> you<00:01:01.092> so<00:01:01.301> much<00:01:01.478> for<00:01:01.639> coming<00:01:01.960> on<00:01:02.105> the<00:01:02.185> show.

00:01:02.668 --> 00:01:06.833
You<00:01:02.780> are<00:01:02.909> the<00:01:03.086> President<00:01:03.649> and<00:01:03.729> CEO<00:01:05.482> of<00:01:05.740> Spring<00:01:06.142> Mountain<00:01:06.383> Capital.

00:01:07.428 --> 00:01:09.294
Tell<00:01:07.589> us<00:01:07.814> how<00:01:08.297> all<00:01:08.393> of<00:01:08.538> that<00:01:08.715> came<00:01:08.956> to<00:01:09.117> be.

00:01:09.583 --> 00:01:10.896
How<00:01:09.615> did<00:01:09.824> you<00:01:09.921> get<00:01:10.067> to<00:01:10.173> be<00:01:10.332> where<00:01:10.438> you<00:01:10.614> are?

00:01:13.982 --> 00:01:15.776
I'll<00:01:15.113> keep<00:01:15.372> it<00:01:15.437> short.

00:01:15.986 --> 00:01:24.939
I<00:01:16.568> was<00:01:17.700> at<00:01:17.942> McKinsey<00:01:18.573> Company,<00:01:19.219> and<00:01:19.720> one<00:01:19.882> of<00:01:19.963> the<00:01:20.028> things<00:01:20.205> I<00:01:20.367> did<00:01:20.917> while<00:01:21.014> I<00:01:21.159> was<00:01:21.337> there,<00:01:22.910> formed<00:01:23.262> the<00:01:23.429> McKinsey<00:01:23.932> Investment<00:01:24.771> Office.

00:01:26.275 --> 00:01:43.423
And<00:01:26.419> then<00:01:27.463> the,<00:01:27.977> according<00:01:28.298> to<00:01:28.362> my<00:01:28.667> game<00:01:28.908> plan,<00:01:29.631> I<00:01:30.209> exited<00:01:31.959> McKinsey<00:01:32.360> when<00:01:32.457> I<00:01:32.537> was<00:01:32.762> 45,<00:01:33.998> thought<00:01:34.126> about<00:01:34.448> what<00:01:34.608> I<00:01:34.688> want<00:01:34.769> to<00:01:34.945> do<00:01:35.106> next<00:01:35.411> 4<00:01:35.491> or<00:01:35.748> 5<00:01:36.069> years,<00:01:36.390> and<00:01:36.615> then<00:01:37.916> formed<00:01:39.056> Spring<00:01:39.361> Mountain<00:01:39.827> Capital<00:01:40.244> in<00:01:40.405> 2001<00:01:41.753> with<00:01:41.994> my<00:01:42.171> partner<00:01:42.636> Lonnie<00:01:42.893> Stephens.

00:01:44.322 --> 00:01:50.167
And<00:01:44.579> the<00:01:45.687> emphasis<00:01:46.249> has<00:01:46.490> been<00:01:47.132> on<00:01:48.593> special<00:01:48.995> situations<00:01:49.653> investing.

00:01:50.986 --> 00:01:55.704
And<00:01:51.965> we've<00:01:52.125> done<00:01:52.912> that<00:01:53.393> in<00:01:54.452> over<00:01:54.613> the<00:01:54.677> last<00:01:55.014> 20<00:01:55.399> years.

00:01:56.619 --> 00:02:08.382
And<00:01:57.164> now<00:01:57.886> I<00:01:58.143> was<00:01:58.544> turning<00:01:58.865> to<00:01:58.945> another<00:01:59.331> part<00:02:00.454> of<00:02:01.337> what<00:02:01.497> we<00:02:01.658> wanted<00:02:01.979> to<00:02:02.059> do<00:02:02.219> at<00:02:02.299> Spring<00:02:02.556> Mountain<00:02:02.941> Capital,<00:02:04.241> which<00:02:04.466> was<00:02:04.546> something<00:02:04.963> that<00:02:05.188> was<00:02:05.429> meaningful<00:02:06.648> within<00:02:07.595> the<00:02:07.756> community.

00:02:09.521 --> 00:02:17.689
And<00:02:09.697> thus<00:02:10.644> I<00:02:10.821> formed<00:02:11.703> a<00:02:12.089> couple<00:02:12.345> years<00:02:12.586> ago,<00:02:13.469> the<00:02:13.549> social<00:02:14.111> impact<00:02:14.592> investing<00:02:16.197> side<00:02:16.598> of<00:02:16.678> Spring<00:02:16.999> Mountain<00:02:17.320> Capital.

00:02:19.229 --> 00:02:30.852
What<00:02:19.389> is<00:02:19.565> it<00:02:19.661> about<00:02:20.367> McKinsey<00:02:22.291> that,<00:02:22.836> uh,<00:02:23.557> produces<00:02:24.936> leaders<00:02:25.738> like<00:02:26.059> you<00:02:26.764> and<00:02:27.277> the<00:02:27.502> people<00:02:27.806> who<00:02:27.983> go<00:02:28.303> on<00:02:28.704> to<00:02:29.009> create<00:02:29.345> like<00:02:29.570> incredible<00:02:29.971> companies<00:02:30.307> like<00:02:30.484> yourself?

00:02:31.253 --> 00:02:33.835
Can<00:02:31.317> you<00:02:31.430> tell<00:02:31.654> us<00:02:31.750> a<00:02:31.911> little<00:02:32.135> bit<00:02:32.247> about<00:02:32.472> what<00:02:32.632> it's<00:02:32.792> like<00:02:33.017> to<00:02:33.113> be<00:02:33.273> at<00:02:33.354> McKinsey?

00:02:33.915 --> 00:02:36.608
I<00:02:33.931> mean,<00:02:34.139> obviously<00:02:34.380> there<00:02:34.460> have<00:02:34.620> been<00:02:34.941> tons<00:02:35.197> of<00:02:35.278> books<00:02:35.582> written<00:02:35.759> about<00:02:35.999> this<00:02:36.159> company.

00:02:37.426 --> 00:02:40.825
Um,<00:02:37.923> it's<00:02:38.083> the<00:02:38.404> leading<00:02:38.869> consulting<00:02:39.446> firm<00:02:39.847> in<00:02:40.007> the<00:02:40.168> world.

00:02:41.514 --> 00:02:46.677
Um,<00:02:42.797> it'd<00:02:42.893> be—<00:02:43.054> it<00:02:43.134> might<00:02:43.294> be<00:02:43.454> interesting<00:02:43.919> for<00:02:44.016> some<00:02:44.176> people<00:02:44.481> to<00:02:44.513> know<00:02:44.753> more<00:02:45.058> about<00:02:45.362> what<00:02:45.475> your<00:02:45.683> experience<00:02:46.164> was<00:02:46.324> like<00:02:46.501> there.

00:02:48.010 --> 00:02:48.347
Sure.

00:02:49.390 --> 00:02:52.505
The,<00:02:49.695> um,<00:02:50.755> I<00:02:51.141> will<00:02:51.397> put<00:02:51.783> one<00:02:51.959> caveat.

00:02:52.682 --> 00:03:01.272
I<00:02:52.762> started<00:02:53.228> at<00:02:53.388> McKinsey<00:02:54.593> in<00:02:54.834> 1982,<00:02:56.921> um,<00:02:57.563> and<00:02:57.981> I,<00:02:58.286> I<00:02:58.382> left<00:02:58.623> it<00:02:58.719> in<00:02:59.345> 1996.

00:03:01.834 --> 00:03:11.918
So,<00:03:02.862> uh,<00:03:03.681> the,<00:03:03.986> uh,<00:03:04.484> the<00:03:04.789> answer<00:03:05.190> that<00:03:05.351> I<00:03:05.447> give<00:03:05.672> to<00:03:05.704> your<00:03:05.929> question<00:03:06.812> pertains<00:03:07.936> to<00:03:08.177> the<00:03:08.337> period<00:03:08.803> then,<00:03:09.847> uh,<00:03:09.943> for<00:03:10.103> which<00:03:10.328> I<00:03:10.408> have<00:03:10.585> a<00:03:10.987> very<00:03:11.211> good<00:03:11.372> explanation.

00:03:13.154 --> 00:03:21.914
McKinsey<00:03:14.501> basically<00:03:14.983> was<00:03:15.063> started<00:03:15.400> by<00:03:15.624> James<00:03:15.945> Oscar<00:03:16.282> McKinsey,<00:03:16.844> but<00:03:17.485> very<00:03:17.887> early<00:03:18.272> on<00:03:18.464> it<00:03:18.528> was<00:03:18.689> taken<00:03:19.074> over<00:03:19.330> by<00:03:19.491> a<00:03:19.956> fellow<00:03:20.470> named<00:03:20.935> Marvin<00:03:21.577> Bower.

00:03:23.101 --> 00:03:27.352
And<00:03:23.743> Marvin<00:03:24.144> was<00:03:25.411> a<00:03:25.507> Harvard<00:03:25.892> Law<00:03:26.005> School<00:03:26.374> person<00:03:26.711> by<00:03:26.871> training.

00:03:28.219 --> 00:03:41.436
And<00:03:29.599> one<00:03:29.759> of<00:03:29.855> the<00:03:30.064> things<00:03:30.385> he<00:03:30.561> brought<00:03:31.026> to<00:03:31.187> McKinsey<00:03:33.192> was<00:03:33.449> a<00:03:33.529> concept<00:03:34.315> of<00:03:35.535> investing<00:03:36.818> not<00:03:37.235> for<00:03:38.054> not<00:03:38.967> capitalist<00:03:39.544> reasons,<00:03:40.586> but<00:03:40.747> for<00:03:40.987> purpose.

00:03:42.269 --> 00:03:56.776
And<00:03:43.375> one<00:03:43.536> of<00:03:43.616> the<00:03:43.648> noticeable<00:03:44.273> things<00:03:44.658> that<00:03:45.074> when<00:03:45.219> you<00:03:45.379> joined<00:03:45.635> McKinsey<00:03:46.998> back<00:03:47.318> then<00:03:48.104> was<00:03:48.280> Marvin<00:03:48.681> sent<00:03:49.001> you<00:03:49.466> a<00:03:49.643> copy<00:03:50.027> of<00:03:50.107> his<00:03:50.348> book,<00:03:50.668> which<00:03:50.925> is<00:03:51.406> private,<00:03:52.752> which<00:03:52.913> we<00:03:53.009> all<00:03:53.169> promised<00:03:53.554> not<00:03:53.730> to<00:03:53.874> share<00:03:54.227> with<00:03:54.435> anybody,<00:03:54.852> was<00:03:55.012> titled<00:03:55.397> Perspectives<00:03:56.118> on<00:03:56.295> McKinsey.

00:03:57.721 --> 00:04:05.239
And<00:03:59.324> Marvin<00:04:00.462> believed<00:04:01.087> that<00:04:02.290> the<00:04:02.386> firm<00:04:02.706> should<00:04:02.819> not<00:04:03.027> be<00:04:03.251> operated<00:04:03.973> on<00:04:04.069> a<00:04:04.149> financial<00:04:04.870> basis.

00:04:06.302 --> 00:04:14.873
He<00:04:07.190> was<00:04:07.384> a<00:04:07.513> believer<00:04:08.159> in<00:04:08.256> the<00:04:08.336> philosophy<00:04:09.063> that<00:04:10.903> if<00:04:11.145> you<00:04:11.404> do<00:04:11.791> the<00:04:12.033> right<00:04:12.372> thing,<00:04:13.841> everything<00:04:14.293> else<00:04:14.390> will<00:04:14.520> follow.

00:04:15.532 --> 00:04:20.947
And<00:04:15.612> so<00:04:15.821> there<00:04:15.918> was<00:04:16.142> a<00:04:16.223> whole<00:04:16.544> tradition<00:04:17.428> of<00:04:17.605> individuals<00:04:19.051> that<00:04:19.356> subscribed<00:04:19.919> to<00:04:19.999> that<00:04:20.417> philosophy.

00:04:21.702 --> 00:04:31.020
And<00:04:21.783> so<00:04:22.972> there<00:04:23.068> are<00:04:23.293> individuals<00:04:23.840> such<00:04:24.131> as<00:04:25.071> a<00:04:25.752> fellow<00:04:26.060> partner,<00:04:26.400> senior<00:04:26.789> partner<00:04:27.130> named<00:04:27.422> John<00:04:27.746> Katzenbach,<00:04:29.934> who<00:04:30.112> wrote<00:04:30.663> a<00:04:30.842> book.

00:04:31.085 --> 00:04:34.455
I<00:04:31.101> know<00:04:31.393> you,<00:04:31.983> probably<00:04:32.464> ask<00:04:32.705> about<00:04:33.508> books<00:04:33.813> I<00:04:33.910> would<00:04:34.134> read.

00:04:35.098 --> 00:04:46.402
John<00:04:35.901> was<00:04:36.061> very—<00:04:36.495> I<00:04:36.527> was<00:04:36.703> very<00:04:36.880> close<00:04:37.057> to<00:04:37.265> John<00:04:37.587> and<00:04:37.667> he<00:04:37.763> wrote<00:04:38.004> the<00:04:38.084> book<00:04:39.048> The<00:04:39.208> Wisdom<00:04:39.850> of<00:04:40.075> Teams<00:04:41.360> and<00:04:43.688> Creating<00:04:44.105> a<00:04:44.170> High-Performance<00:04:45.775> Organization.

00:04:47.076 --> 00:04:59.166
So<00:04:47.220> one<00:04:47.381> of<00:04:47.413> the<00:04:47.477> things<00:04:47.799> about<00:04:48.505> McKinsey<00:04:49.003> was<00:04:49.228> they<00:04:49.324> always<00:04:49.645> thought<00:04:49.822> about<00:04:50.753> organizations<00:04:51.813> and<00:04:52.615> leadership<00:04:54.446> and<00:04:54.623> those<00:04:54.944> themes<00:04:55.490> of<00:04:55.650> how<00:04:55.827> to<00:04:56.132> create<00:04:57.176> a<00:04:57.256> high-performing<00:04:58.572> organization.

00:05:00.016 --> 00:05:05.007
So<00:05:01.669> now<00:05:01.830> there<00:05:02.953> I<00:05:03.033> was<00:05:03.274> brought<00:05:03.595> on<00:05:03.772> not<00:05:04.093> in<00:05:04.189> a<00:05:04.317> consulting<00:05:04.895> role.

00:05:05.136 --> 00:05:08.650
I<00:05:05.280> was<00:05:05.376> brought<00:05:05.762> on,<00:05:06.002> actually,<00:05:06.981> I<00:05:07.045> was<00:05:07.222> McKinsey's<00:05:07.848> first<00:05:08.265> lawyer.

00:05:09.469 --> 00:05:17.798
And<00:05:10.271> the<00:05:10.512> project<00:05:11.298> that,<00:05:12.261> among<00:05:12.743> the<00:05:12.839> projects<00:05:13.224> I<00:05:13.304> was<00:05:13.481> tasked<00:05:13.882> with<00:05:14.765> was<00:05:15.744> making<00:05:16.129> the<00:05:16.225> firm<00:05:16.610> truly<00:05:17.172> international.

00:05:18.600 --> 00:05:24.411
So<00:05:19.724> we<00:05:19.820> wanted<00:05:20.125> at<00:05:20.205> that<00:05:20.382> time<00:05:20.687> to<00:05:20.783> be<00:05:20.944> in<00:05:21.088> the<00:05:21.906> top<00:05:22.163> 40<00:05:22.693> economies<00:05:23.736> in<00:05:23.832> the<00:05:23.993> world.

00:05:25.181 --> 00:05:28.071
And<00:05:25.583> at<00:05:25.904> the<00:05:26.000> time<00:05:26.257> I<00:05:26.402> joined,<00:05:26.787> we<00:05:26.883> were<00:05:27.269> at<00:05:27.301> about<00:05:27.831> 8.

00:05:28.874 --> 00:05:41.575
And<00:05:29.051> so<00:05:30.239> the<00:05:30.335> task<00:05:30.721> ahead<00:05:30.913> of<00:05:31.042> me<00:05:31.202> was<00:05:31.363> opening<00:05:31.700> offices<00:05:32.262> in<00:05:32.359> 32<00:05:32.840> new<00:05:33.129> countries,<00:05:34.815> which<00:05:34.992> took<00:05:35.233> me<00:05:35.313> 16<00:05:35.859> years,<00:05:37.240> going<00:05:37.497> out<00:05:37.545> and<00:05:37.705> meeting<00:05:38.043> the<00:05:38.203> teams<00:05:38.669> who<00:05:38.765> proposed<00:05:39.231> to<00:05:39.311> go<00:05:39.552> out<00:05:39.712> there<00:05:40.531> and<00:05:40.612> figure<00:05:40.917> out<00:05:41.029> how<00:05:41.174> to<00:05:41.318> do<00:05:41.479> it.

00:05:41.832 --> 00:05:54.401
So<00:05:42.940> 16<00:05:43.405> years,<00:05:43.662> 32<00:05:44.064> companies,<00:05:45.734> countries<00:05:46.215> later,<00:05:47.275> the,<00:05:48.014> I<00:05:48.222> hit<00:05:48.463> my<00:05:49.154> target<00:05:50.239> retirement<00:05:50.806> date<00:05:51.000> of<00:05:51.065> '45<00:05:51.810> and<00:05:52.587> announced<00:05:53.235> I<00:05:53.332> would<00:05:53.964> leave<00:05:54.142> the<00:05:54.223> firm.

00:05:55.195 --> 00:06:00.547
But<00:05:55.357> it<00:05:55.421> was<00:05:55.600> filled<00:05:55.923> with<00:05:56.150> individuals<00:05:56.733> who<00:05:56.895> thought<00:05:57.138> about<00:05:57.462> organizations<00:05:59.053> and<00:05:59.696> how<00:05:59.937> to<00:06:00.178> run<00:06:00.435> them.

00:06:00.692 --> 00:06:04.790
So<00:06:00.837> it<00:06:00.869> was<00:06:00.981> not<00:06:01.158> only<00:06:01.560> technically,<00:06:03.247> but<00:06:03.488> from<00:06:03.649> the<00:06:03.810> leadership<00:06:04.437> angle.

00:06:05.256 --> 00:06:20.622
And<00:06:05.417> then<00:06:07.249> we<00:06:07.362> espoused<00:06:07.989> basically,<00:06:08.616> I<00:06:08.632> was<00:06:08.728> a<00:06:08.744> little<00:06:08.953> bit<00:06:09.130> early,<00:06:10.079> but<00:06:10.786> I<00:06:11.365> was<00:06:11.670> very<00:06:11.847> close<00:06:12.169> to<00:06:12.410> the<00:06:12.796> partnership<00:06:13.535> committees<00:06:14.034> in<00:06:14.178> terms<00:06:14.580> of<00:06:15.243> the<00:06:15.323> future<00:06:16.110> of<00:06:16.511> partners,<00:06:17.491> how<00:06:17.732> to<00:06:17.796> keep<00:06:18.069> things<00:06:18.518> open<00:06:18.791> for<00:06:19.177> young<00:06:19.498> people<00:06:19.899> coming<00:06:20.525> up.

00:06:21.489 --> 00:06:29.212
And<00:06:21.906> the<00:06:22.051> philosophy<00:06:22.613> was<00:06:22.854> that<00:06:23.432> by<00:06:23.528> the<00:06:23.592> time<00:06:23.753> you<00:06:23.833> get<00:06:23.994> to<00:06:24.218> age<00:06:24.475> 50,<00:06:24.861> you<00:06:24.973> should<00:06:25.198> begin<00:06:25.503> to<00:06:25.599> think<00:06:25.904> about<00:06:26.643> what<00:06:26.868> your<00:06:27.125> next<00:06:27.671> act<00:06:27.992> in<00:06:28.168> life<00:06:28.811> should<00:06:29.051> be.

00:06:30.031 --> 00:06:38.123
So<00:06:30.336> we<00:06:30.480> were<00:06:30.721> all<00:06:31.942> encouraged<00:06:32.584> to<00:06:33.242> think<00:06:33.483> about<00:06:34.013> going<00:06:34.495> out<00:06:34.687> from<00:06:34.912> the<00:06:35.008> firm<00:06:35.875> and<00:06:35.956> doing<00:06:36.197> something<00:06:36.598> of<00:06:36.678> significance<00:06:37.465> outside<00:06:37.867> the<00:06:37.947> firm.

00:06:39.087 --> 00:06:45.730
So<00:06:39.231> I<00:06:39.408> would<00:06:39.552> say<00:06:39.729> that's<00:06:40.034> the,<00:06:41.020> sort<00:06:41.262> of<00:06:41.520> longer<00:06:42.084> answer<00:06:42.488> to<00:06:42.568> your<00:06:42.794> question,<00:06:43.197> but,<00:06:43.843> uh,<00:06:44.262> that's,<00:06:44.665> that's<00:06:45.069> basically<00:06:45.633> it.

00:06:46.682 --> 00:06:52.705
I<00:06:46.698> have<00:06:46.843> to<00:06:46.989> ask,<00:06:47.166> what<00:06:47.392> was<00:06:47.489> your<00:06:47.634> experience<00:06:48.279> like<00:06:48.860> conducting<00:06:49.424> business<00:06:50.054> in<00:06:50.150> so<00:06:50.280> many<00:06:50.393> different<00:06:50.716> countries<00:06:51.201> and<00:06:51.347> so<00:06:51.460> many<00:06:51.686> different<00:06:52.155> cultures?

00:06:52.818 --> 00:06:57.588
What<00:06:52.980> did<00:06:53.142> you<00:06:53.384> learn<00:06:54.435> about<00:06:54.840> differences,<00:06:55.486> and<00:06:55.632> what<00:06:55.729> did<00:06:55.907> you<00:06:56.052> learn<00:06:56.295> about<00:06:56.602> commonalities<00:06:57.411> there?

00:06:59.498 --> 00:07:01.108
Oh,<00:06:59.531> it<00:06:59.580> was<00:06:59.742> really,<00:07:00.181> it<00:07:00.246> was<00:07:00.474> really<00:07:00.734> fun.

00:07:01.693 --> 00:07:06.814
Uh,<00:07:02.278> the,<00:07:02.587> uh,<00:07:03.498> uh,<00:07:04.717> I<00:07:04.798> really<00:07:05.026> got<00:07:05.189> a<00:07:05.205> chance<00:07:05.595> to<00:07:05.676> see<00:07:05.855> how<00:07:06.083> different<00:07:06.343> people<00:07:06.668> think.

00:07:07.557 --> 00:07:17.785
How,<00:07:08.280> uh,<00:07:09.179> the<00:07:09.275> systems<00:07:09.885> that<00:07:10.046> are<00:07:10.207> put<00:07:10.367> in<00:07:10.464> place,<00:07:10.865> the<00:07:11.331> governing<00:07:11.812> systems,<00:07:12.856> reflect<00:07:13.193> the<00:07:13.273> way<00:07:13.498> they<00:07:13.675> think,<00:07:14.702> uh,<00:07:15.264> and,<00:07:15.746> uh,<00:07:16.469> execute<00:07:17.272> various<00:07:17.609> things.

00:07:17.850 --> 00:07:28.896
For<00:07:17.994> example,<00:07:18.893> tax<00:07:19.279> laws,<00:07:20.322> uh,<00:07:20.659> exchange<00:07:21.141> control,<00:07:22.410> uh,<00:07:22.891> ownership<00:07:23.309> by,<00:07:24.176> uh,<00:07:24.352> local<00:07:24.818> individuals<00:07:25.557> if<00:07:25.637> you<00:07:25.782> want<00:07:25.878> to<00:07:25.958> come<00:07:26.183> out<00:07:26.504> as<00:07:26.665> a<00:07:27.066> big<00:07:27.307> US<00:07:27.789> company,<00:07:28.206> for<00:07:28.351> example.

00:07:29.555 --> 00:07:39.951
Um,<00:07:30.293> but<00:07:30.855> the<00:07:31.000> very,<00:07:31.257> very<00:07:31.498> interesting<00:07:32.060> thing<00:07:33.186> was<00:07:33.749> even<00:07:33.975> though<00:07:34.152> you<00:07:34.297> had<00:07:34.555> these<00:07:35.586> very<00:07:36.069> different<00:07:36.552> viewpoints,<00:07:37.116> it<00:07:37.197> all<00:07:37.438> boils<00:07:37.857> down<00:07:38.324> to<00:07:39.307> the<00:07:39.404> same<00:07:39.774> thing.

00:07:40.032 --> 00:07:45.469
There<00:07:40.193> is<00:07:40.354> an<00:07:40.596> underlying<00:07:41.707> philosophy<00:07:42.527> culture<00:07:43.089> which<00:07:43.411> actually<00:07:43.797> unites<00:07:45.019> everybody.

00:07:45.517 --> 00:07:57.869
So<00:07:46.305> on<00:07:46.385> one<00:07:46.610> hand,<00:07:47.607> seeing<00:07:47.977> the<00:07:48.073> differences,<00:07:48.636> seeing<00:07:48.861> the<00:07:48.957> different<00:07:49.295> approaches<00:07:50.567> and<00:07:50.712> realizing<00:07:51.292> that<00:07:53.130> they<00:07:53.291> all<00:07:53.388> come<00:07:53.614> together<00:07:54.033> in<00:07:54.113> the<00:07:54.210> same<00:07:54.516> place<00:07:54.903> and<00:07:55.548> turned<00:07:55.870> out<00:07:56.467> as<00:07:56.547> a<00:07:56.612> fascinating<00:07:57.498> experience.

00:07:59.795 --> 00:08:02.617
And<00:07:59.939> therefore<00:08:00.356> not<00:08:00.677> as<00:08:00.837> hard<00:08:01.094> as<00:08:01.238> one<00:08:01.463> might,<00:08:01.960> might<00:08:02.136> expect.

00:08:03.082 --> 00:08:05.199
Yeah,<00:08:03.323> that<00:08:03.483> is,<00:08:03.708> that<00:08:03.868> is<00:08:04.205> actually<00:08:04.526> fascinating.

00:08:06.033 --> 00:08:13.955
And<00:08:06.129> now<00:08:06.450> at<00:08:06.546> Spring<00:08:06.851> Mountain<00:08:07.091> Capital,<00:08:08.198> um,<00:08:08.695> and<00:08:09.096> you've<00:08:09.240> started<00:08:09.561> doing<00:08:09.817> the<00:08:09.881> social<00:08:10.314> impact<00:08:10.779> investing,<00:08:12.046> I<00:08:12.126> wondered,<00:08:12.527> like,<00:08:12.704> does<00:08:12.864> that<00:08:13.024> come<00:08:13.249> from<00:08:13.425> McKinsey?

00:08:14.131 --> 00:08:17.354
What<00:08:14.371> makes<00:08:14.708> you,<00:08:15.414> um,<00:08:15.734> so<00:08:16.055> excited<00:08:16.552> about<00:08:16.953> that?

00:08:18.140 --> 00:08:35.643
And<00:08:18.380> how<00:08:18.557> do<00:08:18.701> you<00:08:18.813> ensure—<00:08:19.663> I<00:08:19.840> always<00:08:20.144> ask<00:08:20.305> this<00:08:20.401> question<00:08:20.722> because,<00:08:20.962> you<00:08:21.058> know,<00:08:21.106> I<00:08:21.267> know<00:08:21.443> a<00:08:21.459> lot<00:08:21.748> of<00:08:21.844> different<00:08:22.181> social<00:08:23.287> impact<00:08:23.608> companies,<00:08:24.153> you<00:08:24.185> may<00:08:24.330> know<00:08:24.490> some<00:08:24.747> of<00:08:24.827> them,<00:08:25.180> A<00:08:25.452> couple<00:08:25.709> of<00:08:25.773> them<00:08:25.934> are<00:08:26.014> in<00:08:26.094> Utah,<00:08:26.496> like<00:08:26.881> Cotopaxi,<00:08:27.683> which<00:08:27.844> is<00:08:27.940> an<00:08:28.004> outdoor<00:08:28.405> brand,<00:08:28.839> and,<00:08:29.144> you<00:08:29.224> know,<00:08:30.428> Warby<00:08:30.732> Parker,<00:08:31.776> these<00:08:31.952> type,<00:08:32.193> Tom<00:08:32.514> Shoes,<00:08:33.252> these—<00:08:33.621> I'm<00:08:34.039> thinking<00:08:34.440> all<00:08:34.665> consumer<00:08:35.066> brands<00:08:35.355> right<00:08:35.483> now.

00:08:35.788 --> 00:08:50.056
But,<00:08:36.029> um,<00:08:37.650> how<00:08:37.810> do<00:08:37.955> you<00:08:38.131> ensure<00:08:39.078> the,<00:08:39.720> uh,<00:08:40.217> companies<00:08:40.603> you<00:08:40.699> invest<00:08:41.100> in<00:08:41.245> are<00:08:41.485> actually<00:08:42.545> doing<00:08:42.930> it<00:08:43.106> for<00:08:43.251> the<00:08:43.411> right<00:08:43.668> reasons<00:08:44.230> and<00:08:44.390> not<00:08:44.711> because,<00:08:45.979> man,<00:08:46.236> it<00:08:46.316> sounds<00:08:46.717> good<00:08:47.343> to<00:08:47.841> be<00:08:48.001> a<00:08:48.098> social<00:08:48.627> impact<00:08:49.028> startup<00:08:49.526> or<00:08:49.670> company?

00:08:50.200 --> 00:08:51.179
Does<00:08:50.633> that<00:08:50.681> make<00:08:50.874> sense?

00:08:52.680 --> 00:08:57.724
Yeah,<00:08:53.278> the,<00:08:53.747> the,<00:08:54.555> I've<00:08:55.056> looked<00:08:55.299> at<00:08:55.380> the<00:08:55.541> area<00:08:55.848> for<00:08:56.026> quite<00:08:56.285> some<00:08:56.511> time.

00:08:58.193 --> 00:09:17.419
And<00:08:59.761> first<00:09:00.004> of<00:09:00.133> all,<00:09:00.311> to<00:09:00.537> answer<00:09:01.265> your<00:09:01.426> first<00:09:01.685> question,<00:09:03.812> the,<00:09:04.037> you<00:09:04.295> know,<00:09:05.810> at<00:09:06.004> this<00:09:06.149> point<00:09:06.407> I'm<00:09:06.874> 72<00:09:08.389> and<00:09:09.050> you<00:09:09.131> go<00:09:09.308> through<00:09:09.598> your<00:09:09.856> life<00:09:10.243> journey<00:09:11.146> and<00:09:11.307> basically<00:09:13.310> I<00:09:13.407> was,<00:09:14.459> when<00:09:14.621> I<00:09:14.685> was<00:09:14.863> in<00:09:14.944> college,<00:09:15.979> I<00:09:16.011> studied<00:09:16.480> motivation<00:09:17.208> theory.

00:09:18.093 --> 00:09:21.323
And<00:09:18.173> so<00:09:18.414> everything<00:09:18.736> goes<00:09:18.977> back<00:09:19.298> to<00:09:19.780> Maslow's<00:09:20.487> need<00:09:20.728> hierarchy.

00:09:22.190 --> 00:09:28.561
And<00:09:22.753> in<00:09:22.897> reality,<00:09:23.412> social<00:09:23.958> impact<00:09:24.424> investing<00:09:25.501> is<00:09:25.645> just<00:09:26.432> moving<00:09:26.834> along<00:09:27.172> that<00:09:27.656> need<00:09:27.963> hierarchy.

00:09:28.642 --> 00:09:38.174
You<00:09:28.884> know,<00:09:28.933> you<00:09:29.046> start<00:09:29.336> with<00:09:29.934> physiological<00:09:30.887> needs<00:09:32.018> and<00:09:32.180> safety<00:09:32.729> and<00:09:32.826> security,<00:09:35.233> love<00:09:35.572> and<00:09:36.054> belonging,<00:09:37.435> self-esteem.

00:09:38.239 --> 00:09:45.784
And<00:09:38.367> eventually,<00:09:40.215> if<00:09:40.456> you<00:09:40.873> live<00:09:41.179> long<00:09:41.436> enough<00:09:42.400> and<00:09:42.721> you<00:09:42.882> think<00:09:43.267> about<00:09:43.524> it<00:09:43.669> hard<00:09:43.910> enough,<00:09:44.103> you<00:09:44.167> get<00:09:44.392> to<00:09:44.504> the<00:09:44.713> period<00:09:45.277> of<00:09:45.364> self-actualization.

00:09:47.343 --> 00:10:01.594
And<00:09:47.424> that<00:09:47.667> is,<00:09:48.379> you<00:09:49.188> know,<00:09:49.593> in<00:09:50.160> one<00:09:50.322> sense<00:09:50.581> of<00:09:50.613> the<00:09:50.662> word,<00:09:50.969> contributing<00:09:51.795> back<00:09:53.009> to<00:09:53.333> the<00:09:53.737> society<00:09:55.583> and<00:09:55.680> the<00:09:55.810> community<00:09:57.449> in<00:09:57.593> doing<00:09:57.770> something<00:09:58.156> that's<00:09:58.718> truly<00:09:59.393> impactful<00:10:00.261> and<00:10:00.903> changes<00:10:01.305> things.

00:10:02.173 --> 00:10:06.974
So<00:10:03.217> the,<00:10:04.519> after<00:10:05.065> a<00:10:05.243> long<00:10:05.582> spell,<00:10:06.052> I'm<00:10:06.197> finally<00:10:06.699> here.

00:10:07.896 --> 00:10:26.379
And<00:10:08.381> when<00:10:08.623> I<00:10:08.721> thought<00:10:09.060> about<00:10:09.384> it,<00:10:11.050> the<00:10:11.632> thing<00:10:12.182> is,<00:10:12.857> I<00:10:12.873> get<00:10:13.100> that<00:10:13.279> question<00:10:13.668> all<00:10:13.830> the<00:10:13.928> time,<00:10:14.414> the<00:10:14.511> one<00:10:14.658> you<00:10:14.804> asked<00:10:15.712> in<00:10:15.793> terms<00:10:16.053> of<00:10:16.182> how<00:10:16.361> do<00:10:16.507> you<00:10:17.237> ensure<00:10:18.551> that<00:10:19.183> your<00:10:19.589> companies<00:10:20.173> are<00:10:23.074> doing<00:10:24.046> or<00:10:24.613> on<00:10:24.791> the<00:10:24.953> path<00:10:25.358> to<00:10:25.618> social<00:10:26.023> impact?

00:10:28.120 --> 00:10:37.939
Basically,<00:10:29.600> the,<00:10:31.919> we<00:10:32.160> have<00:10:32.965> in<00:10:33.383> the<00:10:33.528> project<00:10:34.011> that<00:10:34.124> I'm<00:10:34.269> working<00:10:34.655> on,<00:10:34.832> which<00:10:34.993> is<00:10:35.154> called<00:10:36.104> West<00:10:36.345> Harlem<00:10:36.844> Innovation<00:10:37.649> Network.

00:10:40.073 --> 00:10:44.738
A<00:10:41.622> guide<00:10:42.252> as<00:10:42.510> to<00:10:43.301> what<00:10:43.786> we<00:10:44.028> will<00:10:44.270> fund.

00:10:46.304 --> 00:10:52.469
You<00:10:46.401> know,<00:10:46.465> social<00:10:46.853> impact<00:10:47.515> investing<00:10:47.870> can<00:10:48.080> take<00:10:48.290> various<00:10:48.804> forms<00:10:49.350> and<00:10:49.527> go<00:10:49.913> address<00:10:50.331> various<00:10:50.878> needs<00:10:51.714> of<00:10:51.842> the<00:10:51.939> community.

00:10:53.209 --> 00:10:54.366
Ours<00:10:53.546> is<00:10:53.627> very<00:10:53.868> specific.

00:10:55.379 --> 00:11:15.719
In<00:10:56.022> the<00:10:56.118> West<00:10:56.424> Harlem<00:10:57.069> Innovation<00:10:58.381> Network,<00:11:00.081> we<00:11:00.243> will<00:11:00.486> target<00:11:01.037> companies<00:11:02.252> that<00:11:02.592> we<00:11:02.900> believe<00:11:04.133> will<00:11:04.295> have<00:11:05.732> a<00:11:07.444> positive<00:11:09.140> impact<00:11:10.594> on<00:11:10.674> the<00:11:10.820> health<00:11:11.482> and<00:11:11.708> educational<00:11:12.757> wellbeing<00:11:13.836> of<00:11:14.061> underrepresented<00:11:15.172> minorities.

00:11:16.573 --> 00:11:20.576
So<00:11:16.718> if<00:11:16.863> you're<00:11:16.959> not<00:11:17.136> a<00:11:17.201> company<00:11:17.684> that<00:11:17.845> can<00:11:18.006> explain<00:11:18.473> that,<00:11:19.497> we're<00:11:19.916> not<00:11:20.061> looking<00:11:20.383> at<00:11:20.544> you.

00:11:20.657 --> 00:11:32.914
So<00:11:20.882> first<00:11:21.140> of<00:11:21.269> all,<00:11:21.365> right,<00:11:21.913> your<00:11:22.235> purpose,<00:11:22.718> your<00:11:23.201> reason<00:11:23.765> of<00:11:23.861> existence<00:11:25.053> has<00:11:25.214> gotta<00:11:25.456> be<00:11:25.552> something<00:11:26.036> that<00:11:26.680> will<00:11:26.841> improve<00:11:27.404> the<00:11:27.565> health<00:11:27.888> and<00:11:28.032> educational<00:11:28.533> impact<00:11:29.525> of<00:11:29.756> underrepresented<00:11:32.894> minorities.

00:11:32.914 --> 00:11:56.199
The<00:11:32.996> second<00:11:33.418> thing<00:11:33.971> is<00:11:34.622> the,<00:11:37.817> we<00:11:37.914> spend<00:11:38.221> a<00:11:38.237> lot<00:11:38.496> of<00:11:38.641> time<00:11:39.676> taking<00:11:40.096> a<00:11:40.177> look<00:11:40.565> at<00:11:40.662> the<00:11:40.824> team,<00:11:42.020> talking<00:11:42.424> about<00:11:43.152> to<00:11:43.475> them,<00:11:44.623> not<00:11:45.108> necessarily<00:11:45.690> about<00:11:46.224> the<00:11:46.628> idea,<00:11:47.048> but<00:11:47.210> whether<00:11:47.340> or<00:11:47.452> not<00:11:48.258> they<00:11:48.644> are<00:11:48.983> talented<00:11:49.868> and<00:11:50.030> passionate<00:11:50.771> about<00:11:51.157> the<00:11:51.383> purpose<00:11:53.412> more<00:11:53.654> so<00:11:54.846> than<00:11:55.410> the<00:11:55.587> dollar<00:11:55.925> figure.

00:11:57.688 --> 00:12:06.602
Are<00:11:57.918> they,<00:11:58.164> for<00:11:58.329> example,<00:11:59.068> in<00:11:59.643> what<00:11:59.808> I<00:11:59.840> mentioned<00:12:00.465> earlier,<00:12:02.730> attempting<00:12:03.262> to<00:12:03.424> do<00:12:03.666> the<00:12:03.827> right<00:12:04.085> thing,<00:12:04.634> believing<00:12:05.134> that<00:12:05.376> everything<00:12:05.779> will<00:12:06.328> follow?

00:12:06.667 --> 00:12:11.083
And<00:12:06.764> that's<00:12:06.990> a<00:12:07.054> very<00:12:07.232> subtle<00:12:07.570> thing<00:12:07.812> that,<00:12:09.300> you<00:12:09.364> know,<00:12:09.492> there's<00:12:09.653> no<00:12:09.894> checklist<00:12:10.617> that<00:12:10.778> you<00:12:10.939> do.

00:12:11.164 --> 00:12:20.143
You<00:12:11.260> have<00:12:11.421> to<00:12:11.662> meet<00:12:11.919> and<00:12:12.128> talk<00:12:12.466> with<00:12:12.626> the<00:12:12.707> individual<00:12:13.767> to<00:12:13.992> really<00:12:14.314> believe<00:12:14.812> that<00:12:14.957> that<00:12:15.262> is<00:12:16.146> in<00:12:16.258> their<00:12:16.483> heart<00:12:17.448> and<00:12:17.528> in<00:12:17.608> their<00:12:17.833> mind<00:12:18.332> and<00:12:19.001> is<00:12:19.213> what<00:12:19.474> motivates<00:12:20.029> them.

00:12:20.616 --> 00:12:23.422
So<00:12:20.763> one<00:12:20.942> thing<00:12:21.171> is<00:12:22.002> evaluation<00:12:23.046> of<00:12:23.144> the<00:12:23.291> team.

00:12:25.351 --> 00:12:36.638
The<00:12:25.511> third<00:12:26.075> part,<00:12:27.942> so<00:12:28.409> purpose,<00:12:29.472> team,<00:12:30.502> third<00:12:30.679> part<00:12:31.226> is<00:12:32.450> we<00:12:32.546> are<00:12:32.740> multiple-stage<00:12:33.658> capital<00:12:35.027> and<00:12:35.172> we<00:12:35.253> start<00:12:35.494> at<00:12:35.591> the<00:12:35.752> very<00:12:36.155> beginning.

00:12:37.202 --> 00:12:48.234
So<00:12:37.347> we<00:12:37.427> will<00:12:37.604> grow<00:12:37.911> with<00:12:38.072> you<00:12:38.233> and<00:12:38.329> hopefully<00:12:38.732> mentor<00:12:39.215> you<00:12:39.441> and<00:12:39.602> have<00:12:39.860> you<00:12:40.504> be<00:12:41.261> loyal<00:12:41.713> to<00:12:42.441> the<00:12:42.684> cause<00:12:45.176> and<00:12:47.118> have<00:12:47.279> a<00:12:47.360> fair<00:12:47.474> amount<00:12:47.716> of<00:12:47.846> control.

00:12:49.763 --> 00:12:53.476
Over<00:12:50.005> the<00:12:50.312> process<00:12:51.701> because<00:12:52.007> we're<00:12:52.104> multiple<00:12:52.508> stage<00:12:52.895> of<00:12:53.057> capital.

00:12:54.445 --> 00:13:00.017
We<00:12:54.526> won't<00:12:54.768> be<00:12:55.252> investing<00:12:55.801> in<00:12:55.882> a<00:12:55.963> company<00:12:56.786> and<00:12:56.867> then<00:12:57.173> handing<00:12:57.577> it<00:12:57.658> off<00:12:57.916> for<00:12:57.997> somebody<00:12:58.465> else<00:12:58.530> and<00:12:58.659> losing<00:12:59.613> purpose.

00:13:00.098 --> 00:13:25.067
We<00:13:00.583> will<00:13:01.473> adopt<00:13:01.796> people<00:13:02.119> we<00:13:02.216> think<00:13:02.540> are<00:13:02.766> passionate,<00:13:03.397> talented,<00:13:04.691> true,<00:13:06.146> and<00:13:07.068> fund<00:13:07.456> them<00:13:08.167> as<00:13:08.489> long<00:13:08.747> as<00:13:08.989> they<00:13:10.585> do<00:13:10.746> the<00:13:10.778> second<00:13:11.310> part<00:13:12.278> of<00:13:12.858> what<00:13:13.019> we<00:13:13.164> consider<00:13:13.584> social<00:13:13.987> impact,<00:13:14.857> which<00:13:15.034> is<00:13:15.438> improving<00:13:17.193> the<00:13:17.418> economics<00:13:18.316> of<00:13:18.396> the<00:13:18.556> community<00:13:20.384> and<00:13:20.481> providing<00:13:21.026> higher-paying<00:13:21.988> job<00:13:22.389> opportunities<00:13:23.688> to<00:13:23.848> members<00:13:24.393> of<00:13:24.473> the<00:13:24.569> community.

00:13:25.916 --> 00:13:28.995
So<00:13:27.215> in<00:13:27.295> that<00:13:27.472> way,<00:13:27.680> we're,<00:13:28.097> we're<00:13:28.258> pretty<00:13:28.482> much<00:13:28.674> aligned.

00:13:29.841 --> 00:13:35.409
I<00:13:29.861> think<00:13:30.647> purpose,<00:13:31.529> result,<00:13:34.656> the<00:13:34.832> big<00:13:34.992> topic.

00:13:36.051 --> 00:13:43.539
So<00:13:36.676> in<00:13:36.756> one<00:13:36.981> sense,<00:13:37.301> we<00:13:37.478> are<00:13:38.279> focused<00:13:38.905> on<00:13:39.803> neurodegenerative<00:13:40.925> diseases,<00:13:41.551> which<00:13:41.727> is<00:13:41.952> a<00:13:42.272> very<00:13:42.833> big<00:13:43.010> concern.

00:13:44.300 --> 00:13:49.521
To<00:13:44.476> underrepresented<00:13:46.179> minorities<00:13:46.822> and<00:13:46.967> socioeconomically<00:13:48.268> disadvantaged<00:13:48.927> individuals.

00:13:50.517 --> 00:14:07.309
And<00:13:52.124> the,<00:13:52.349> you<00:13:53.024> know,<00:13:53.168> we<00:13:53.265> may<00:13:53.474> have<00:13:53.634> some<00:13:53.940> side<00:13:54.147> impacts,<00:13:56.040> but<00:13:58.224> if<00:13:58.483> you<00:13:59.049> deliver<00:13:59.535> an<00:13:59.680> improvement<00:14:01.056> along<00:14:02.269> that<00:14:02.512> path,<00:14:02.851> I<00:14:02.932> think<00:14:03.660> you've<00:14:04.372> delivered<00:14:04.792> a<00:14:05.599> pretty<00:14:05.760> significant<00:14:06.406> social<00:14:06.809> impact.

00:14:07.938 --> 00:14:23.385
And<00:14:08.019> if<00:14:08.164> you've<00:14:08.406> done<00:14:08.648> it<00:14:08.825> with<00:14:09.148> people<00:14:10.249> from<00:14:10.716> the<00:14:10.861> community,<00:14:13.760> which<00:14:13.921> is<00:14:14.017> probably<00:14:14.243> the<00:14:14.275> strongest<00:14:14.822> enabler,<00:14:15.627> I<00:14:15.708> think<00:14:17.640> we<00:14:17.721> have<00:14:18.043> pretty<00:14:18.204> good<00:14:18.381> assurance<00:14:18.848> that<00:14:19.009> we'll<00:14:19.154> stay<00:14:19.637> on<00:14:19.734> the<00:14:19.880> track<00:14:20.865> and<00:14:20.930> our<00:14:21.107> measurements<00:14:21.673> of<00:14:21.753> success<00:14:22.238> in<00:14:22.400> this<00:14:22.561> case<00:14:22.868> are<00:14:22.949> aligned.

00:14:25.822 --> 00:14:36.421
Who<00:14:26.065> have<00:14:26.228> you<00:14:26.471> invested<00:14:26.974> in<00:14:27.119> or<00:14:27.282> who<00:14:27.444> have<00:14:27.606> you<00:14:27.703> seen<00:14:28.028> that<00:14:28.255> does<00:14:28.530> this<00:14:28.838> really<00:14:29.309> well,<00:14:30.201> that<00:14:30.363> has<00:14:30.606> really<00:14:32.017> served<00:14:32.974> and<00:14:33.136> gone<00:14:33.444> above<00:14:33.703> and<00:14:33.784> beyond<00:14:34.906> in<00:14:35.004> ways<00:14:35.248> maybe<00:14:35.476> you<00:14:35.574> didn't<00:14:35.884> expect?

00:14:36.470 --> 00:14:43.064
Or<00:14:37.106> yeah,<00:14:37.285> maybe<00:14:37.595> give<00:14:37.709> us<00:14:37.855> an<00:14:37.937> example<00:14:38.360> or<00:14:38.507> two,<00:14:38.735> whether<00:14:38.914> it's<00:14:39.061> somebody<00:14:39.322> you've<00:14:39.403> invested<00:14:39.534> in<00:14:39.566> or<00:14:39.599> somebody<00:14:39.713> you<00:14:39.745> see<00:14:41.892> who<00:14:42.117> does<00:14:42.357> this<00:14:42.534> really<00:14:42.855> well.

00:14:44.123 --> 00:14:49.629
I<00:14:44.380> love<00:14:44.621> the<00:14:44.781> way<00:14:45.809> that<00:14:46.370> you<00:14:46.467> think<00:14:46.772> about<00:14:47.093> this,<00:14:47.334> your<00:14:47.430> approach<00:14:47.992> and<00:14:48.313> the<00:14:48.473> principles<00:14:48.955> you<00:14:49.099> have<00:14:49.340> on<00:14:49.501> this.

00:14:50.095 --> 00:14:51.186
It's<00:14:50.480> pretty<00:14:50.721> remarkable.

00:14:52.470 --> 00:15:15.628
We've<00:14:53.305> seen<00:14:53.626> some<00:14:54.332> companies<00:14:54.878> that<00:14:54.974> have<00:14:55.199> come<00:14:55.440> up<00:14:55.697> with<00:14:56.082> particular<00:14:56.644> attention<00:14:58.105> to,<00:14:59.212> you<00:14:59.405> know,<00:14:59.549> the<00:14:59.710> various<00:15:00.095> factors<00:15:00.593> of<00:15:02.118> diversity<00:15:02.904> in<00:15:03.081> their<00:15:03.241> ranks,<00:15:03.787> participation<00:15:04.686> by<00:15:05.007> people<00:15:05.328> from<00:15:05.553> the<00:15:05.649> community,<00:15:06.997> and<00:15:08.314> attention<00:15:08.940> to<00:15:09.788> a<00:15:11.179> much<00:15:12.490> neglected,<00:15:14.398> overlooked<00:15:14.981> demographic.

00:15:16.598 --> 00:15:17.989
So<00:15:16.825> they're<00:15:17.003> individual<00:15:17.569> companies.

00:15:18.539 --> 00:15:25.768
We<00:15:18.685> have<00:15:18.750> not<00:15:19.332> actually<00:15:19.752> seen<00:15:21.693> anyone<00:15:22.243> do<00:15:22.501> it<00:15:23.294> in<00:15:23.391> the<00:15:23.472> manner<00:15:23.941> that<00:15:24.668> we<00:15:25.008> intend<00:15:25.364> to<00:15:25.493> do<00:15:25.655> it.

00:15:25.833 --> 00:15:33.228
Studio<00:15:26.302> model<00:15:28.309> in<00:15:28.470> the<00:15:28.648> community<00:15:30.251> versus<00:15:30.655> incubation<00:15:31.319> of<00:15:31.416> individuals<00:15:32.047> who<00:15:32.371> leave<00:15:32.597> the<00:15:32.694> community.

00:15:33.892 --> 00:15:54.002
So<00:15:34.054> studio<00:15:34.555> model,<00:15:35.296> in<00:15:35.472> the<00:15:35.617> community,<00:15:36.980> hiring<00:15:37.398> people<00:15:37.718> from<00:15:38.039> the<00:15:38.184> community,<00:15:39.884> looking<00:15:40.221> for<00:15:41.890> a<00:15:42.066> fairly<00:15:42.676> wide<00:15:43.093> platform<00:15:44.681> that<00:15:45.018> can<00:15:46.061> bring<00:15:46.943> the<00:15:48.163> synergistic<00:15:49.895> capabilities<00:15:52.157> when<00:15:52.382> people<00:15:52.606> are<00:15:52.703> united<00:15:53.264> in<00:15:53.601> an<00:15:53.826> effort.

00:15:54.147 --> 00:15:58.109
If<00:15:54.885> one<00:15:55.045> were<00:15:55.205> to<00:15:55.462> say,<00:15:55.751> well,<00:15:56.393> you<00:15:56.473> know,<00:15:56.665> is<00:15:57.259> that<00:15:57.371> a<00:15:57.387> little<00:15:57.676> bit<00:15:57.853> broad?

00:15:58.173 --> 00:16:09.198
Well,<00:15:59.072> if<00:15:59.200> one,<00:16:00.179> if<00:16:00.259> you<00:16:00.403> ask<00:16:00.644> yourself,<00:16:01.583> Why<00:16:03.334> is<00:16:03.494> this<00:16:03.671> particular<00:16:04.217> demographic<00:16:05.198> experiencing<00:16:07.607> poor<00:16:08.009> health<00:16:08.652> results?

00:16:10.740 --> 00:16:16.006
And<00:16:10.901> if<00:16:10.965> you<00:16:11.046> ask<00:16:11.144> anybody<00:16:11.437> who<00:16:11.486> knows<00:16:11.796> anything<00:16:12.058> about<00:16:12.221> the<00:16:12.368> business,<00:16:12.694> there<00:16:12.759> are<00:16:12.873> several<00:16:14.081> parts<00:16:15.060> to<00:16:15.223> the<00:16:15.386> equation.

00:16:17.477 --> 00:16:20.775
Not<00:16:17.913> several,<00:16:18.560> there's<00:16:18.803> a<00:16:18.883> whole<00:16:19.288> pile<00:16:19.627> of<00:16:19.789> parts<00:16:20.048> of<00:16:20.177> the<00:16:20.274> equation.

00:16:21.551 --> 00:16:26.386
And<00:16:21.794> so<00:16:22.699> a<00:16:22.780> single<00:16:25.044> does<00:16:25.270> not<00:16:25.755> answer<00:16:26.014> the<00:16:26.095> question.

00:16:26.435 --> 00:16:51.479
It<00:16:26.483> may<00:16:26.580> have<00:16:26.808> great<00:16:27.136> impact,<00:16:27.496> and<00:16:27.627> I<00:16:27.726> greatly<00:16:28.070> admire<00:16:28.528> those<00:16:28.725> individuals,<00:16:29.987> But<00:16:31.450> I<00:16:31.530> don't<00:16:31.852> know<00:16:32.318> of<00:16:32.414> an<00:16:32.511> example<00:16:33.154> that<00:16:33.298> is<00:16:33.379> trying<00:16:33.700> to<00:16:33.845> bring<00:16:34.166> the<00:16:35.950> multiple<00:16:36.577> parts<00:16:36.850> of<00:16:36.915> the<00:16:36.995> equation<00:16:37.638> together<00:16:39.247> to<00:16:39.409> approach<00:16:39.795> the<00:16:39.892> problem<00:16:40.520> in<00:16:40.682> a<00:16:41.503> way<00:16:41.810> that<00:16:42.293> unleashes<00:16:42.938> the<00:16:43.018> synergies<00:16:45.194> of<00:16:45.613> multiple<00:16:47.853> areas<00:16:48.916> in<00:16:49.077> multiple<00:16:49.625> companies<00:16:50.189> that<00:16:50.673> approach<00:16:51.156> the<00:16:51.237> problem.

00:16:53.332 --> 00:16:55.185
What<00:16:53.493> does<00:16:53.654> a<00:16:53.735> typical<00:16:54.218> day<00:16:54.460> look<00:16:54.637> like<00:16:54.879> for<00:16:55.024> you?

00:16:58.306 --> 00:17:05.595
The,<00:16:59.269> my<00:16:59.365> father<00:17:00.329> was<00:17:00.634> a<00:17:00.811> baker<00:17:02.015> who<00:17:02.159> held<00:17:02.400> two<00:17:02.641> jobs<00:17:03.701> and<00:17:03.942> he<00:17:04.006> used<00:17:04.215> to<00:17:04.263> get<00:17:04.423> up<00:17:04.504> at<00:17:04.568> 3<00:17:04.761> o'clock<00:17:05.082> in<00:17:05.146> the<00:17:05.226> morning.

00:17:06.254 --> 00:17:13.254
And<00:17:07.073> when<00:17:07.233> I<00:17:07.314> wanted<00:17:07.635> a<00:17:07.715> car,<00:17:08.116> asked<00:17:08.277> me<00:17:08.309> to<00:17:08.437> drive<00:17:08.759> him<00:17:08.903> to<00:17:09.064> work<00:17:09.883> at<00:17:10.685> 4:00<00:17:12.998> AM.

00:17:13.796 --> 00:17:14.427
So<00:17:13.816> getting<00:17:13.961> a<00:17:13.977> little<00:17:14.202> older.

00:17:14.475 --> 00:17:19.035
So<00:17:14.780> I<00:17:14.860> start<00:17:15.326> up<00:17:15.807> at<00:17:16.161> 4:30<00:17:17.172> AM,<00:17:17.686> sort<00:17:17.911> of<00:17:18.071> in<00:17:18.232> my<00:17:18.633> DNA.

00:17:19.982 --> 00:17:31.642
And<00:17:22.229> continue<00:17:22.790> on<00:17:22.966> through<00:17:23.111> the<00:17:23.207> rest<00:17:23.367> of<00:17:23.447> the<00:17:23.528> day<00:17:23.768> till<00:17:24.073> I<00:17:24.875> go<00:17:24.971> to<00:17:25.051> bed<00:17:25.292> outside<00:17:25.628> of<00:17:25.757> time<00:17:26.013> with<00:17:26.174> family<00:17:28.082> and<00:17:28.178> my<00:17:28.419> wife<00:17:28.740> in<00:17:28.820> terms<00:17:29.205> of<00:17:29.477> some<00:17:29.782> leisure,<00:17:30.504> but<00:17:30.664> starts<00:17:31.001> at<00:17:31.065> 4:30.

00:17:31.706 --> 00:17:32.364
Wow.

00:17:33.150 --> 00:17:38.939
36<00:17:34.016> weeks<00:17:34.272> of<00:17:34.353> the<00:17:34.577> year,<00:17:34.737> it<00:17:34.818> starts<00:17:35.299> with<00:17:35.652> some<00:17:35.940> kind<00:17:36.117> of<00:17:36.197> training,<00:17:37.720> which<00:17:38.282> involved<00:17:38.683> running.

00:17:39.629 --> 00:17:46.428
I<00:17:39.869> run<00:17:40.110> marathons<00:17:41.393> and<00:17:41.489> I<00:17:41.569> run<00:17:41.810> marathons<00:17:42.387> in<00:17:42.531> the<00:17:42.612> spring<00:17:43.093> and<00:17:43.173> the<00:17:43.317> fall<00:17:44.215> and<00:17:44.376> they're<00:17:44.696> 18-week<00:17:45.723> training<00:17:46.044> programs.

00:17:46.477 --> 00:17:58.758
So<00:17:48.078> 18<00:17:48.401> weeks<00:17:48.790> in<00:17:50.587> winter,<00:17:51.154> early<00:17:51.396> spring,<00:17:52.433> I'm<00:17:52.594> training<00:17:53.971> with<00:17:54.133> usually<00:17:54.489> a<00:17:54.699> run<00:17:55.185> or<00:17:55.282> cross-training<00:17:56.642> for<00:17:56.804> about<00:17:56.950> an<00:17:57.295> hour<00:17:57.558> to<00:17:57.788> an<00:17:58.117> hour<00:17:58.216> and<00:17:58.364> a<00:17:58.446> half.

00:18:00.570 --> 00:18:12.544
And<00:18:01.270> catching<00:18:01.670> up<00:18:01.770> on<00:18:01.953> emails,<00:18:03.810> hopefully<00:18:04.349> squeeze<00:18:04.726> that<00:18:04.889> all<00:18:05.069> in<00:18:05.233> before<00:18:05.805> 8:30,<00:18:09.207> 8:00<00:18:09.679> AM<00:18:10.363> in<00:18:10.510> the<00:18:10.607> morning,<00:18:10.851> whether<00:18:11.096> hopefully<00:18:11.503> I<00:18:11.893> show<00:18:12.154> up<00:18:12.251> at<00:18:12.398> work.

00:18:13.699 --> 00:18:16.381
That's<00:18:16.108> incredible.

00:18:16.446 --> 00:18:27.464
And<00:18:16.510> then<00:18:16.670> it's<00:18:16.831> reading,<00:18:17.650> reading<00:18:18.052> and<00:18:18.196> interacting<00:18:18.694> with<00:18:18.871> individuals<00:18:19.497> and<00:18:19.658> doing,<00:18:20.124> uh,<00:18:20.927> uh,<00:18:21.810> uh,<00:18:22.645> focusing<00:18:23.191> on<00:18:23.272> the<00:18:23.352> main<00:18:23.593> project<00:18:24.091> as<00:18:24.236> well<00:18:24.460> as<00:18:24.637> running,<00:18:25.745> uh,<00:18:25.842> the<00:18:25.986> running<00:18:26.259> of<00:18:26.388> Spring<00:18:26.725> Mountain<00:18:27.111> Capital.

00:18:28.396 --> 00:18:33.310
So<00:18:28.476> Spring<00:18:28.717> Mountain<00:18:29.054> Capital<00:18:29.456> also<00:18:30.500> invests<00:18:30.965> in<00:18:31.062> special<00:18:31.528> situations,<00:18:32.331> which<00:18:32.507> is<00:18:32.588> how<00:18:32.684> we<00:18:32.893> started.

00:18:34.178 --> 00:18:39.189
Uh,<00:18:34.676> it<00:18:34.836> has<00:18:35.141> a<00:18:35.222> growth<00:18:35.559> equity<00:18:35.961> component,<00:18:37.390> uni-bond<00:18:37.968> investing<00:18:38.547> and<00:18:38.691> so<00:18:38.852> forth.

00:18:39.253 --> 00:18:47.035
And,<00:18:39.719> and,<00:18:40.056> uh,<00:18:40.297> we're<00:18:40.538> adding<00:18:40.843> to<00:18:41.004> that<00:18:42.751> a<00:18:42.833> fund-to-funds<00:18:43.579> business,<00:18:44.390> and<00:18:44.471> then<00:18:44.634> we're<00:18:44.780> adding<00:18:45.201> to<00:18:45.364> that<00:18:45.867> social<00:18:46.256> impact<00:18:46.678> investing.

00:18:49.650 --> 00:18:52.262
How<00:18:49.682> do<00:18:49.746> you<00:18:49.859> decide<00:18:50.553> where<00:18:50.956> to<00:18:51.053> spend<00:18:51.391> your<00:18:51.536> time<00:18:51.843> each<00:18:52.020> day?

00:18:52.407 --> 00:19:00.793
Like,<00:18:52.649> once<00:18:52.827> you<00:18:52.988> get<00:18:53.230> to<00:18:53.375> the<00:18:53.536> office,<00:18:54.020> how<00:18:54.181> do<00:18:54.246> you<00:18:54.278> decide,<00:18:55.110> here's<00:18:55.207> what<00:18:55.255> I'm<00:18:55.320> going<00:18:55.450> to<00:18:55.547> focus<00:18:56.114> on<00:18:56.259> today,<00:18:56.664> here's<00:18:56.907> what<00:18:56.956> I'm<00:18:57.085> going<00:18:57.182> to<00:18:57.490> be<00:18:57.960> reading<00:18:58.364> in<00:18:58.462> depth<00:18:58.785> about,<00:18:59.255> here's<00:18:59.498> who<00:18:59.660> I<00:18:59.676> should<00:18:59.919> be<00:19:00.081> meeting<00:19:00.567> with?

00:19:01.295 --> 00:19:02.559
How<00:19:01.393> do<00:19:01.457> you<00:19:01.555> make<00:19:01.797> those<00:19:02.040> decisions?

00:19:05.416 --> 00:19:36.011
Oh,<00:19:06.122> those<00:19:07.861> Order<00:19:08.006> of<00:19:08.103> priority,<00:19:09.380> and<00:19:10.835> what<00:19:11.982> the<00:19:13.017> order<00:19:13.130> of<00:19:13.195> priority<00:19:13.987> is<00:19:16.091> getting<00:19:17.630> West<00:19:17.873> Harlem<00:19:18.278> Innovation<00:19:18.764> Network<00:19:19.185> off<00:19:19.347> the<00:19:19.428> ground,<00:19:21.217> and<00:19:22.698> order<00:19:22.795> of<00:19:22.925> priority<00:19:23.576> on<00:19:24.081> that<00:19:25.040> is<00:19:25.382> making<00:19:25.789> sure<00:19:26.098> all<00:19:26.358> the<00:19:26.505> components<00:19:27.107> of<00:19:27.237> people<00:19:27.497> are<00:19:27.660> in<00:19:27.823> place,<00:19:29.300> and<00:19:31.176> that<00:19:31.518> if<00:19:31.681> there's<00:19:32.008> any<00:19:33.716> new<00:19:33.973> thing<00:19:34.278> we<00:19:34.438> ought<00:19:34.599> to<00:19:34.663> be<00:19:34.823> looking<00:19:35.225> at<00:19:35.321> that<00:19:35.482> we<00:19:35.867> added.

00:19:36.541 --> 00:19:44.681
So<00:19:37.151> anything<00:19:37.489> that<00:19:37.649> pertains<00:19:38.291> to<00:19:39.335> moving<00:19:40.764> West<00:19:40.940> Harlem<00:19:41.261> Innovation<00:19:41.743> Network<00:19:42.289> is,<00:19:43.268> takes<00:19:43.766> first<00:19:44.071> precedence.

00:19:46.062 --> 00:20:08.434
Obviously,<00:19:46.559> there's<00:19:46.945> the<00:19:47.587> running<00:19:47.988> of<00:19:48.085> the<00:19:48.181> firm<00:19:49.433> and<00:19:51.055> the<00:19:51.135> fact<00:19:51.440> that<00:19:53.045> I<00:19:53.302> and<00:19:53.383> my<00:19:53.543> partner,<00:19:53.944> Lonnie<00:19:54.185> Stephens,<00:19:55.534> are<00:19:55.694> on<00:19:56.112> every<00:19:56.337> single<00:19:56.754> one<00:19:56.995> of<00:19:57.155> the<00:19:57.637> investment<00:19:58.199> committees<00:19:59.180> For<00:19:59.552> the<00:19:59.649> various<00:20:00.054> other<00:20:00.280> parts<00:20:00.555> of<00:20:00.620> the<00:20:00.766> firm,<00:20:01.736> uh,<00:20:01.914> there<00:20:02.076> are<00:20:02.173> scheduled<00:20:02.723> meetings<00:20:03.128> and<00:20:03.273> those<00:20:03.597> things,<00:20:04.422> uh,<00:20:04.972> take<00:20:05.231> place<00:20:05.393> so<00:20:05.700> that<00:20:05.878> they<00:20:05.959> don't<00:20:06.186> get<00:20:06.429> kicked<00:20:06.687> off<00:20:06.930> because<00:20:07.173> they<00:20:07.270> don't<00:20:07.496> have<00:20:07.658> the<00:20:07.739> highest<00:20:07.982> priority.

00:20:09.097 --> 00:20:11.344
So<00:20:09.582> there<00:20:09.825> are,<00:20:10.390> uh,<00:20:10.423> scheduled<00:20:10.972> meetings.

00:20:12.088 --> 00:20:15.466
So<00:20:12.815> outside<00:20:13.074> of<00:20:13.171> that,<00:20:14.108> uh,<00:20:14.270> we<00:20:14.351> stuff<00:20:14.626> everything<00:20:15.078> in<00:20:15.175> between.

00:20:17.091 --> 00:20:17.644
What<00:20:17.140> do<00:20:17.254> you<00:20:17.417> read?

00:20:17.921 --> 00:20:22.134
What<00:20:18.393> I'm,<00:20:18.751> I'm,<00:20:18.913> I'm<00:20:19.206> particularly<00:20:19.710> interested<00:20:20.101> in<00:20:20.182> what<00:20:20.345> you<00:20:20.589> read<00:20:20.849> when<00:20:20.996> you<00:20:21.093> first<00:20:21.337> get<00:20:21.484> into<00:20:21.663> the<00:20:21.890> office.

00:20:24.694 --> 00:20:36.570
The,<00:20:26.945> I<00:20:27.026> have<00:20:27.917> news<00:20:28.257> feeds<00:20:29.536> on,<00:20:31.318> from<00:20:31.496> a<00:20:31.658> variety<00:20:32.079> of<00:20:32.144> sources<00:20:34.965> on<00:20:35.143> developments<00:20:35.776> in<00:20:35.873> life<00:20:36.051> sciences.

00:20:37.803 --> 00:20:43.294
My<00:20:37.900> main<00:20:38.370> role<00:20:38.873> in<00:20:39.019> the<00:20:39.116> West<00:20:39.343> Harlem<00:20:39.668> Innovation<00:20:40.089> Network<00:20:41.143> will<00:20:41.305> be<00:20:41.468> in<00:20:41.549> the<00:20:41.776> life<00:20:42.018> sciences<00:20:43.003> wing.

00:20:44.457 --> 00:20:50.143
So<00:20:45.265> there<00:20:45.991> are<00:20:46.250> feeds<00:20:49.141> from<00:20:49.367> various<00:20:49.706> sources.

00:20:51.768 --> 00:20:56.308
Reporting<00:20:52.317> on<00:20:52.414> developments,<00:20:53.933> new<00:20:54.111> papers,<00:20:55.323> etc.

00:20:56.454 --> 00:21:03.247
There<00:20:56.534> are<00:20:56.938> alerts,<00:20:57.520> and<00:20:57.601> so<00:20:58.376> catching<00:20:58.861> up<00:20:59.039> to<00:20:59.508> that,<00:21:02.195> the<00:21:02.276> feeds<00:21:02.600> are<00:21:02.681> constant.

00:21:03.959 --> 00:21:10.375
They<00:21:04.057> come<00:21:04.299> in<00:21:04.380> about<00:21:04.688> 1,000<00:21:05.659> emails<00:21:06.080> a<00:21:06.226> day,<00:21:07.132> and<00:21:07.278> so<00:21:08.586> they<00:21:08.747> just<00:21:09.956> come<00:21:10.198> through.

00:21:10.697 --> 00:21:11.648
I<00:21:10.713> don't<00:21:10.907> have<00:21:11.084> to<00:21:11.229> select.

00:21:12.051 --> 00:21:14.580
It's<00:21:12.518> in,<00:21:12.679> in,<00:21:13.581> in,<00:21:13.984> in<00:21:14.129> your<00:21:14.306> face.

00:21:15.982 --> 00:21:25.607
And<00:21:17.628> As<00:21:17.773> I<00:21:18.192> tell<00:21:18.579> all<00:21:18.756> of<00:21:18.998> the<00:21:20.271> young<00:21:20.529> people<00:21:21.658> we<00:21:21.819> mentor,<00:21:24.059> they<00:21:24.156> should<00:21:24.543> really<00:21:24.946> like<00:21:25.285> reading.

00:21:26.690 --> 00:21:31.591
I<00:21:26.803> probably,<00:21:28.016> if<00:21:28.097> you<00:21:28.194> say,<00:21:28.420> what<00:21:28.582> is<00:21:29.456> the<00:21:29.553> main<00:21:29.957> activity<00:21:30.523> of<00:21:30.604> the<00:21:30.766> day?

00:21:31.736 --> 00:21:32.238
It's<00:21:31.963> reading.

00:21:34.663 --> 00:21:45.292
And<00:21:34.793> if<00:21:36.974> everything<00:21:37.313> from<00:21:37.620> emails<00:21:38.283> to<00:21:38.590> articles<00:21:39.882> to<00:21:40.367> papers,<00:21:42.584> probably<00:21:42.848> spend<00:21:43.096> about<00:21:43.773> 6<00:21:44.235> hours<00:21:44.565> a<00:21:44.648> day<00:21:44.994> reading.

00:21:47.598 --> 00:21:49.770
What<00:21:48.003> book<00:21:48.246> recommendations<00:21:48.992> would<00:21:49.138> you<00:21:49.219> have<00:21:49.381> for<00:21:49.640> us?

00:21:51.800 --> 00:21:52.735
Book<00:21:51.896> recommendations?

00:21:53.687 --> 00:22:10.826
Well,<00:21:54.720> the,<00:21:54.962> um,<00:21:59.981> let<00:22:00.078> me,<00:22:00.287> let<00:22:00.352> me<00:22:00.465> go<00:22:00.626> back<00:22:00.868> to<00:22:01.094> one<00:22:01.272> that<00:22:01.738> I<00:22:01.787> think<00:22:01.980> is<00:22:02.141> very<00:22:02.253> important<00:22:02.961> because<00:22:03.428> if<00:22:04.233> you're—<00:22:04.716> we're<00:22:04.893> talking<00:22:05.054> about<00:22:05.295> leadership,<00:22:06.727> uh,<00:22:07.290> and,<00:22:07.693> uh,<00:22:08.356> organizations<00:22:09.174> and<00:22:09.351> functioning.

00:22:11.324 --> 00:22:19.248
One<00:22:11.901> of<00:22:12.848> the<00:22:13.104> books<00:22:13.425> I<00:22:13.505> think<00:22:13.762> are<00:22:13.842> seminal<00:22:14.324> to<00:22:14.452> my<00:22:14.564> thinking<00:22:15.815> is<00:22:16.698> one<00:22:16.874> written<00:22:17.099> by<00:22:17.195> my<00:22:17.436> partner<00:22:17.821> John<00:22:18.077> Katzenback,<00:22:18.960> right?

00:22:19.361 --> 00:22:22.377
That's<00:22:19.585> the<00:22:19.682> one<00:22:19.842> I<00:22:19.906> mentioned<00:22:20.259> earlier,<00:22:21.302> The<00:22:21.446> Wisdom<00:22:21.831> of<00:22:21.992> Teams.

00:22:22.954 --> 00:22:32.515
Now,<00:22:23.050> there<00:22:23.131> are<00:22:23.195> many,<00:22:23.532> many<00:22:23.836> books<00:22:24.157> on<00:22:24.655> teams<00:22:26.339> and<00:22:26.515> so<00:22:26.740> forth,<00:22:26.997> and<00:22:27.366> you<00:22:27.462> could<00:22:27.622> read<00:22:27.863> that,<00:22:28.184> but<00:22:28.328> this<00:22:28.505> is,<00:22:29.130> you<00:22:29.178> know,<00:22:29.612> this<00:22:29.788> is<00:22:29.948> one<00:22:30.109> of<00:22:30.189> the<00:22:30.253> seminal<00:22:30.831> books<00:22:31.055> that<00:22:31.232> I<00:22:31.296> think<00:22:31.472> that<00:22:31.713> is<00:22:31.857> very<00:22:32.034> important.

00:22:32.932 --> 00:22:38.689
It's<00:22:33.077> very<00:22:33.301> important<00:22:33.638> this<00:22:33.879> particular<00:22:34.440> time<00:22:35.147> as<00:22:35.243> people<00:22:35.646> begin<00:22:36.048> to<00:22:36.193> work<00:22:36.612> away<00:22:36.918> from<00:22:37.159> teams,<00:22:37.578> namely<00:22:38.125> remotely.

00:22:39.977 --> 00:23:00.048
And<00:22:40.154> if<00:22:40.235> you<00:22:40.267> really<00:22:40.557> understand<00:22:41.507> the<00:22:41.925> book<00:22:44.180> and<00:22:44.341> the<00:22:44.569> value<00:22:45.099> or<00:22:45.248> believe<00:22:45.596> in<00:22:45.728> the<00:22:45.828> value<00:22:46.258> of<00:22:46.407> the<00:22:46.556> team,<00:22:48.190> this<00:22:48.302> helps<00:22:48.624> you<00:22:49.926> form—<00:22:50.215> you<00:22:50.295> can<00:22:51.019> probably<00:22:51.983> get<00:22:52.144> over<00:22:52.482> it<00:22:53.832> by<00:22:53.945> skimming<00:22:54.427> it,<00:22:54.555> but<00:22:54.732> gives<00:22:54.893> you<00:22:54.989> some<00:22:55.214> very,<00:22:55.536> very<00:22:55.697> important<00:22:56.179> principles<00:22:57.459> to<00:22:57.621> forming<00:22:58.761> high-performance<00:22:59.820> teams.

00:23:01.575 --> 00:23:19.947
That's<00:23:02.298> one<00:23:02.459> book<00:23:02.619> I<00:23:02.700> would<00:23:02.860> certainly—<00:23:03.743> but<00:23:03.840> now<00:23:04.707> in<00:23:04.868> terms<00:23:05.333> of<00:23:06.217> the<00:23:07.421> area<00:23:07.919> that<00:23:08.642> we're<00:23:08.866> in,<00:23:09.027> I<00:23:09.188> find<00:23:09.589> fascinating<00:23:11.275> along<00:23:12.239> topically<00:23:13.524> in<00:23:13.620> West<00:23:13.845> Harlem<00:23:14.182> Innovation<00:23:14.744> Network,<00:23:15.788> we<00:23:16.013> will<00:23:16.189> approach<00:23:17.972> things<00:23:18.341> like<00:23:18.839> artificial<00:23:19.305> intelligence.

00:23:20.750 --> 00:23:24.926
We<00:23:20.991> will<00:23:21.248> approach<00:23:21.650> the<00:23:21.746> question<00:23:22.597> of<00:23:24.139> bioethics.

00:23:25.327 --> 00:23:30.987
We'll<00:23:25.905> approach<00:23:26.227> the<00:23:26.387> question<00:23:26.949> of<00:23:28.143> of<00:23:29.355> neurodegenerative<00:23:30.406> diseases.

00:23:31.052 --> 00:23:49.522
And<00:23:31.198> so<00:23:31.941> the<00:23:32.086> books<00:23:32.345> that<00:23:32.490> I<00:23:32.571> find<00:23:32.846> fascinating<00:23:33.783> to<00:23:33.880> help<00:23:34.429> expand<00:23:35.722> the<00:23:35.900> platform<00:23:36.562> of<00:23:36.627> thinking<00:23:37.112> versus<00:23:37.514> a<00:23:37.756> thing<00:23:38.078> in<00:23:38.239> particular<00:23:41.541> is<00:23:42.346> Max<00:23:42.732> Tegmark's<00:23:43.377> book,<00:23:44.343> which<00:23:44.520> he<00:23:44.601> wrote<00:23:44.842> it,<00:23:45.325> he<00:23:45.470> wrote<00:23:45.728> before,<00:23:46.720> you<00:23:46.817> know,<00:23:47.062> AI<00:23:47.322> really<00:23:47.583> sort<00:23:47.827> of<00:23:48.218> took<00:23:48.381> its<00:23:48.610> recent<00:23:49.261> pop.

00:23:50.418 --> 00:23:52.748
Max<00:23:50.809> Tegmark's<00:23:51.461> book,<00:23:51.722> Life<00:23:52.276> 3.0.

00:23:54.842 --> 00:24:01.085
Very,<00:23:55.100> very<00:23:55.261> interesting<00:23:55.745> book,<00:23:56.455> which<00:23:57.423> I<00:23:57.519> read<00:23:58.391> when<00:23:58.504> it<00:23:58.552> first<00:23:58.810> came<00:23:59.036> out<00:23:59.600> and<00:23:59.762> I'm<00:24:00.084> rereading<00:24:00.649> currently.

00:24:02.462 --> 00:24:10.840
His<00:24:02.592> book,<00:24:04.066> the<00:24:04.147> subtitle<00:24:04.731> of<00:24:04.812> the<00:24:04.877> book<00:24:05.363> is<00:24:07.891> Being<00:24:08.215> Human<00:24:09.025> in<00:24:09.106> the<00:24:09.333> Age<00:24:09.592> of<00:24:09.738> Artificial<00:24:10.241> Intelligence.

00:24:12.690 --> 00:24:14.898
So<00:24:13.442> find<00:24:13.606> that<00:24:13.786> book<00:24:14.031> very<00:24:14.440> interesting.

00:24:16.649 --> 00:24:23.293
The<00:24:19.423> There's<00:24:19.666> an<00:24:19.910> entire<00:24:20.317> discussion<00:24:20.903> about<00:24:22.025> the<00:24:22.187> brain<00:24:22.756> and<00:24:22.935> thinking.

00:24:23.407 --> 00:24:24.578
There's<00:24:23.570> several<00:24:23.976> books<00:24:24.220> in<00:24:24.367> that.

00:24:25.692 --> 00:24:42.311
One<00:24:25.919> I'm<00:24:26.097> about<00:24:26.486> to<00:24:26.648> read,<00:24:26.842> so,<00:24:28.024> which<00:24:28.203> is<00:24:28.446> interesting<00:24:28.932> topically<00:24:30.065> because<00:24:30.616> the<00:24:30.940> researcher<00:24:31.345> has<00:24:31.523> done<00:24:31.701> a<00:24:31.766> fair<00:24:32.009> amount<00:24:32.268> of<00:24:32.479> work<00:24:33.629> in<00:24:33.710> the<00:24:33.856> area,<00:24:34.260> is<00:24:34.503> Chiran<00:24:37.432> Ranganath,<00:24:38.791> and<00:24:38.969> his<00:24:39.212> book<00:24:39.616> is<00:24:40.668> titled<00:24:41.141> Why<00:24:41.570> We<00:24:41.800> Remember.

00:24:44.109 --> 00:24:57.945
And<00:24:45.402> Books<00:24:45.596> about<00:24:46.146> brain<00:24:46.470> plasticity,<00:24:47.909> memory<00:24:48.815> recall,<00:24:50.514> thinking,<00:24:51.581> I<00:24:51.646> think<00:24:51.824> are<00:24:51.889> very,<00:24:52.293> very<00:24:52.520> interesting<00:24:52.957> because<00:24:53.151> it<00:24:53.248> ties<00:24:53.652> into<00:24:53.895> the<00:24:53.960> topic<00:24:54.329> of<00:24:54.876> where<00:24:55.036> are<00:24:55.117> we<00:24:55.358> headed<00:24:56.708> with<00:24:56.965> artificial<00:24:57.511> intelligence?

00:24:58.010 --> 00:24:58.636
Where<00:24:58.138> are<00:24:58.234> we<00:24:58.395> headed?

00:24:58.733 --> 00:25:01.545
Where's<00:24:59.038> humanity<00:25:00.324> headed<00:25:01.079> in<00:25:01.288> that?

00:25:02.092 --> 00:25:04.946
So<00:25:02.204> that's<00:25:02.429> another<00:25:02.751> book<00:25:02.960> which<00:25:03.218> I'm<00:25:04.510> aching<00:25:04.671> to<00:25:04.768> read.

00:25:04.994 --> 00:25:13.684
I<00:25:05.075> haven't<00:25:05.398> read<00:25:05.575> it<00:25:05.721> yet,<00:25:05.979> but<00:25:07.012> reputationally,<00:25:09.370> the<00:25:10.843> Chiran<00:25:11.166> has<00:25:11.328> done<00:25:11.570> a<00:25:11.650> fair<00:25:11.893> amount<00:25:12.151> of<00:25:12.361> very,<00:25:12.619> very<00:25:12.861> interesting<00:25:13.410> work.

00:25:14.798 --> 00:25:40.242
With<00:25:15.024> respect<00:25:15.589> to<00:25:16.897> the<00:25:17.607> area<00:25:18.188> that<00:25:19.238> we<00:25:19.544> are<00:25:19.866> in,<00:25:20.687> and<00:25:20.832> I<00:25:20.848> think<00:25:21.073> very<00:25:21.250> significantly<00:25:22.698> to<00:25:23.084> inform<00:25:24.934> us<00:25:25.416> as<00:25:26.397> we<00:25:28.155> deal<00:25:28.818> with<00:25:30.514> underrepresented<00:25:31.403> minorities,<00:25:32.760> this<00:25:32.857> book<00:25:33.083> I<00:25:33.584> became<00:25:33.988> aware<00:25:34.311> of,<00:25:34.456> there's<00:25:34.650> an<00:25:35.264> author<00:25:35.410> named<00:25:35.832> Amy<00:25:36.157> Chua<00:25:36.645> who<00:25:37.068> is<00:25:37.230> famous<00:25:37.702> for<00:25:38.952> Tiger<00:25:39.436> Mom<00:25:39.710> or<00:25:39.855> whatever.

And<00:26:25.256> the,<00:26:26.490> it<00:26:26.554> was<00:26:26.714> very<00:26:26.955> well<00:26:27.179> received<00:26:27.499> when<00:26:27.612> it<00:26:27.740> came<00:26:27.980> out.

00:26:28.557 --> 00:26:29.839
It's<00:26:28.701> really<00:26:29.503> worth<00:26:29.775> it.

00:26:29.983 --> 00:26:31.329
Wow,<00:26:30.320> this<00:26:30.480> was<00:26:30.640> very<00:26:30.881> prescient.

00:26:31.780 --> 00:26:39.159
In<00:26:31.925> terms<00:26:32.394> of,<00:26:32.717> um,<00:26:33.524> what<00:26:33.685> has<00:26:34.170> to<00:26:34.267> be<00:26:34.493> addressed<00:26:36.107> and<00:26:36.285> what<00:26:36.688> we<00:26:36.850> have<00:26:37.092> to<00:26:37.237> do<00:26:37.480> and<00:26:37.722> could<00:26:37.980> do<00:26:38.852> individually.

00:26:41.208 --> 00:26:45.224
How<00:26:41.354> do<00:26:41.435> you<00:26:41.532> think<00:26:42.082> artificial<00:26:42.584> intelligence<00:26:43.459> is<00:26:43.572> going<00:26:43.799> to<00:26:43.945> change<00:26:44.431> life<00:26:44.674> sciences?

00:26:45.338 --> 00:26:51.591
I<00:26:45.354> know<00:26:45.565> that's<00:26:45.743> a<00:26:45.759> very<00:26:46.212> loaded<00:26:46.633> question<00:26:47.136> and<00:26:47.362> probably<00:26:47.621> something<00:26:47.929> you're<00:26:48.091> thinking<00:26:48.415> about<00:26:48.658> all<00:26:48.755> the<00:26:49.223> time,<00:26:50.093> even<00:26:50.335> reading<00:26:50.576> about,<00:26:50.770> as<00:26:50.898> you<00:26:50.979> mentioned<00:26:51.301> before.

00:26:52.284 --> 00:27:03.248
But<00:26:52.509> with<00:26:52.686> the<00:26:52.831> rise<00:26:53.234> of<00:26:53.395> AI<00:26:54.941> and<00:26:55.038> it<00:26:55.247> kind<00:26:55.425> of<00:26:55.489> having<00:26:55.827> its<00:26:56.053> moment<00:26:56.391> currently,<00:26:56.794> like<00:26:57.035> you,<00:26:57.261> like<00:26:57.438> you<00:26:57.519> said,<00:26:58.798> What<00:26:58.846> do<00:26:58.959> you<00:26:59.055> think,<00:26:59.440> like,<00:27:00.324> in<00:27:00.404> particular,<00:27:01.224> where<00:27:01.802> things<00:27:02.188> could<00:27:02.348> get<00:27:02.493> out<00:27:02.605> of<00:27:02.750> hand?

00:27:03.296 --> 00:27:08.762
I<00:27:03.393> imagine<00:27:04.100> is<00:27:04.437> in<00:27:04.598> the<00:27:04.678> life<00:27:04.903> sciences<00:27:05.802> area<00:27:06.782> if<00:27:06.927> we're<00:27:07.007> not<00:27:07.248> careful,<00:27:07.746> or<00:27:07.891> am<00:27:08.037> I<00:27:08.126> wrong<00:27:08.338> about<00:27:08.585> that?

00:27:10.880 --> 00:27:16.916
The,<00:27:10.976> um,<00:27:11.557> I,<00:27:11.864> I<00:27:11.945> think<00:27:12.268> other<00:27:12.526> tools<00:27:12.929> other<00:27:13.188> than<00:27:13.494> artificial<00:27:14.043> intelligence<00:27:14.544> is<00:27:14.624> going<00:27:14.737> to<00:27:14.850> cause,<00:27:15.254> uh,<00:27:15.835> things<00:27:16.142> to<00:27:16.222> get<00:27:16.464> out<00:27:16.577> of<00:27:16.707> hand.

00:27:17.691 --> 00:27:21.506
Uh,<00:27:18.014> CRISPR,<00:27:19.289> uh,<00:27:19.790> gene<00:27:20.000> modification<00:27:20.933> and<00:27:21.031> so<00:27:21.195> forth.

00:27:22.226 --> 00:27:57.687
Uh,<00:27:22.553> now,<00:27:23.535> uh,<00:27:23.716> in<00:27:23.863> terms<00:27:24.272> of<00:27:24.874> First,<00:27:25.136> the<00:27:25.300> answer,<00:27:25.938> first<00:27:26.119> part<00:27:26.299> of<00:27:26.348> your<00:27:26.512> question<00:27:26.758> in<00:27:26.856> terms<00:27:27.184> of<00:27:27.347> artificial<00:27:27.986> intelligence,<00:27:33.273> I<00:27:33.353> think<00:27:33.611> it<00:27:33.756> has<00:27:33.997> potential<00:27:35.189> really,<00:27:36.333> and<00:27:36.655> this<00:27:36.832> is<00:27:36.977> not<00:27:38.427> an<00:27:38.572> earth-shaking<00:27:39.490> statement,<00:27:40.570> to<00:27:40.682> really<00:27:41.729> move<00:27:43.500> us,<00:27:43.726> accelerate<00:27:44.450> the<00:27:44.627> pace<00:27:45.899> of<00:27:47.043> personalized<00:27:47.590> medicine<00:27:48.878> and<00:27:49.442> addressing<00:27:50.442> some<00:27:50.587> of<00:27:50.699> the<00:27:50.844> complicated<00:27:52.852> diseases<00:27:53.655> that<00:27:54.121> you<00:27:54.201> said,<00:27:54.779> from<00:27:55.245> neurodegenerative<00:27:56.145> diseases<00:27:57.109> to<00:27:57.253> cancer.

00:27:58.555 --> 00:27:59.197
Why<00:27:58.812> is<00:27:58.956> that?

00:28:00.322 --> 00:28:07.374
On<00:28:00.466> one<00:28:00.723> hand,<00:28:02.876> we<00:28:03.053> have<00:28:03.615> better<00:28:05.302> life<00:28:05.527> science<00:28:05.928> research<00:28:06.426> tools,<00:28:06.892> for<00:28:06.988> example.

00:28:08.193 --> 00:28:12.499
Those<00:28:08.434> life<00:28:08.531> science<00:28:08.996> research<00:28:09.543> tools<00:28:10.025> get<00:28:10.282> to<00:28:10.940> subcellular<00:28:11.968> levels.

00:28:13.655 --> 00:28:15.358
They<00:28:13.800> get<00:28:13.976> into<00:28:14.217> spatial<00:28:15.005> omics.

00:28:15.904 --> 00:28:28.509
They<00:28:16.145> really<00:28:16.386> begin<00:28:16.707> to<00:28:16.932> understand<00:28:17.977> the<00:28:18.009> mechanisms<00:28:19.040> by<00:28:19.282> which<00:28:21.375> the—<00:28:22.100> which<00:28:22.325> may<00:28:23.936> correlate,<00:28:24.419> but<00:28:25.144> certainly<00:28:25.562> may<00:28:26.384> explain<00:28:27.237> why<00:28:27.575> diseases<00:28:28.203> happen.

00:28:29.571 --> 00:28:40.998
But<00:28:29.652> there's<00:28:29.909> so<00:28:30.312> much<00:28:30.618> data<00:28:30.956> coming<00:28:31.342> available<00:28:32.421> that<00:28:32.872> we're<00:28:33.193> unable<00:28:33.693> to<00:28:34.240> process<00:28:34.900> it<00:28:35.463> and<00:28:35.624> put<00:28:35.801> it<00:28:35.946> together<00:28:36.429> to<00:28:36.590> see<00:28:36.832> if<00:28:36.929> there<00:28:37.155> is<00:28:37.817> something<00:28:38.366> that<00:28:38.608> might<00:28:38.931> accelerate<00:28:39.593> our<00:28:40.303> understanding.

00:28:42.822 --> 00:28:52.295
Secondly,<00:28:44.130> I<00:28:44.211> think<00:28:45.524> it<00:28:45.589> can<00:28:45.767> put<00:28:45.945> it<00:28:46.091> together<00:28:47.372> way<00:28:47.615> beyond<00:28:48.198> our<00:28:48.441> capacity<00:28:49.252> to<00:28:49.479> process<00:28:51.424> that<00:28:51.747> information.

00:28:53.763 --> 00:29:08.190
There's<00:28:53.925> just—<00:28:55.393> we<00:28:55.473> see<00:28:55.715> it<00:28:55.860> because<00:28:56.264> one<00:28:56.377> of<00:28:56.506> the<00:28:56.586> companies<00:28:57.006> we<00:28:57.103> funded,<00:28:59.619> when<00:28:59.781> we<00:28:59.813> funded<00:29:00.265> it<00:29:00.362> just<00:29:00.588> a<00:29:00.669> couple<00:29:00.943> of<00:29:00.992> years<00:29:01.186> ago,<00:29:02.122> it<00:29:02.364> had<00:29:02.510> 100<00:29:03.010> pieces<00:29:03.898> of<00:29:03.979> more<00:29:04.237> data<00:29:05.190> than<00:29:05.432> one<00:29:05.594> of<00:29:05.691> the<00:29:05.852> other<00:29:06.175> large<00:29:07.051> spatial<00:29:07.629> omics<00:29:07.975> firms.

00:29:08.982 --> 00:29:14.650
So<00:29:09.312> 3<00:29:09.609> years<00:29:09.856> later,<00:29:10.642> We're<00:29:10.770> 1,000<00:29:11.428> times<00:29:11.925> more<00:29:12.165> data<00:29:12.967> than<00:29:13.191> we<00:29:13.367> were<00:29:13.768> just<00:29:13.944> 3<00:29:14.169> years<00:29:14.409> back.

00:29:15.451 --> 00:29:18.706
And<00:29:15.532> this<00:29:15.788> is<00:29:15.852> more<00:29:16.173> data<00:29:16.638> than<00:29:16.910> scientists<00:29:17.519> are<00:29:17.760> able<00:29:18.016> to<00:29:18.241> process.

00:29:19.379 --> 00:29:34.961
It<00:29:19.475> leads<00:29:19.860> to<00:29:20.662> advanced<00:29:21.223> mathematics<00:29:21.928> to<00:29:22.024> develop<00:29:22.425> the<00:29:22.649> algorithms<00:29:23.691> that<00:29:23.852> actually<00:29:24.253> show<00:29:25.070> that<00:29:25.872> there<00:29:26.016> are<00:29:26.128> things<00:29:26.577> that<00:29:26.753> we<00:29:26.978> can't<00:29:27.507> see,<00:29:28.341> um,<00:29:29.623> uh,<00:29:30.184> through<00:29:30.585> our<00:29:30.697> senses<00:29:32.188> that<00:29:32.461> might<00:29:32.925> cause<00:29:33.310> the<00:29:33.487> explanation<00:29:34.208> from<00:29:34.513> diseases.

00:29:35.010 --> 00:29:57.195
So<00:29:35.186> I<00:29:35.314> think<00:29:36.117> there's<00:29:36.327> some<00:29:36.456> very,<00:29:36.764> very<00:29:37.103> interesting<00:29:38.220> possibilities<00:29:39.287> to<00:29:39.611> understanding<00:29:41.633> diseases<00:29:42.361> that<00:29:44.392> artificial<00:29:44.842> intelligence,<00:29:45.501> probably<00:29:45.886> coupled<00:29:46.304> with<00:29:47.171> quantum<00:29:48.698> computing,<00:29:49.903> which<00:29:50.079> I<00:29:50.095> know<00:29:50.256> is<00:29:50.336> still<00:29:50.722> a<00:29:50.963> ways<00:29:51.349> off,<00:29:51.525> but<00:29:52.072> to<00:29:52.248> unleash<00:29:52.811> what<00:29:53.117> you<00:29:53.295> could<00:29:53.537> do<00:29:53.699> with<00:29:54.023> the<00:29:54.136> vast<00:29:54.347> amounts<00:29:54.670> of<00:29:54.816> data<00:29:55.399> and<00:29:55.544> artificial<00:29:56.435> intelligence.

00:29:57.746 --> 00:30:03.220
So<00:29:59.931> the<00:30:00.983> eye<00:30:01.064> sensors<00:30:01.549> and<00:30:01.918> It's<00:30:02.207> not<00:30:02.384> my<00:30:02.529> own<00:30:02.770> conclusion.

00:30:03.268 --> 00:30:24.206
I<00:30:03.364> sense<00:30:03.670> there's<00:30:03.911> a<00:30:03.975> lot<00:30:04.152> of<00:30:04.248> excitement<00:30:05.276> when<00:30:05.501> we<00:30:05.598> drill<00:30:05.919> down<00:30:06.305> to<00:30:07.285> the<00:30:07.446> researchers<00:30:08.651> that<00:30:08.811> this<00:30:09.052> is<00:30:09.213> what—<00:30:10.820> this<00:30:11.045> is<00:30:11.190> the<00:30:11.287> potential<00:30:13.148> that<00:30:13.471> artificial<00:30:13.876> intelligence,<00:30:15.753> large<00:30:16.077> data<00:30:16.401> sets,<00:30:16.821> and<00:30:17.355> quantum<00:30:17.760> computing<00:30:18.262> might<00:30:18.585> put<00:30:18.747> together<00:30:19.961> to<00:30:20.026> advance<00:30:20.526> our<00:30:21.559> state<00:30:21.833> of<00:30:21.963> understanding<00:30:22.624> of<00:30:23.028> complicated<00:30:23.674> diseases.

00:30:26.014 --> 00:30:26.789
Why<00:30:26.240> West<00:30:26.563> Harlem?

00:30:30.796 --> 00:30:31.653
The<00:30:31.039> proximity.

00:30:32.074 --> 00:30:33.999
I<00:30:32.155> live<00:30:32.317> on<00:30:32.414> the<00:30:32.511> Upper<00:30:32.737> West<00:30:32.899> Side<00:30:33.222> of<00:30:33.546> Manhattan.

00:30:37.396 --> 00:30:38.690
The,<00:30:37.655> the<00:30:37.881> on<00:30:38.043> something<00:30:38.382> new.

00:30:38.884 --> 00:30:39.934
As<00:30:39.110> I<00:30:39.126> said,<00:30:39.352> no<00:30:39.514> one's<00:30:39.756> tried.

00:30:39.999 --> 00:30:41.874
There's<00:30:40.161> no<00:30:40.387> model<00:30:41.276> to<00:30:41.373> follow.

00:30:44.216 --> 00:30:44.973
The,<00:30:44.458> I<00:30:44.474> have<00:30:44.571> to<00:30:44.716> be<00:30:44.860> there.

00:30:45.038 --> 00:30:47.663
I<00:30:45.118> want<00:30:45.263> to<00:30:45.344> hire<00:30:45.682> people<00:30:46.648> from<00:30:46.971> the<00:30:47.132> community.

00:30:48.404 --> 00:30:52.979
Our<00:30:49.226> team<00:30:49.548> is<00:30:50.353> a<00:30:50.498> team<00:30:50.917> that<00:30:51.175> is<00:30:51.336> not<00:30:51.626> composed<00:30:51.980> of<00:30:52.061> investment<00:30:52.528> bankers.

00:30:53.560 --> 00:30:56.368
Or<00:30:53.770> long-term<00:30:54.351> experienced<00:30:55.028> venture<00:30:55.803> capitalists.

00:30:56.594 --> 00:30:59.159
They're<00:30:57.401> a<00:30:57.497> team<00:30:58.046> of<00:30:58.627> mentors.

00:31:00.709 --> 00:31:02.629
We<00:31:00.886> mentor,<00:31:01.354> our<00:31:01.451> value<00:31:01.935> add<00:31:02.096> is<00:31:02.258> mentoring.

00:31:04.484 --> 00:31:09.950
We<00:31:04.645> do<00:31:04.807> have<00:31:04.985> a<00:31:05.114> wing<00:31:05.292> that<00:31:05.454> can<00:31:05.697> figure<00:31:06.085> out<00:31:06.958> how<00:31:07.152> to<00:31:08.042> do,<00:31:08.268> shape<00:31:08.608> the<00:31:08.754> deal<00:31:09.174> and<00:31:09.255> everything<00:31:09.724> else.

00:31:10.533 --> 00:31:11.778
We<00:31:10.630> got<00:31:10.694> a<00:31:10.711> lot<00:31:10.937> of<00:31:11.034> experience<00:31:11.519> on<00:31:11.600> that.

00:31:12.328 --> 00:31:21.863
But<00:31:12.651> when<00:31:12.813> you<00:31:13.056> are<00:31:13.379> in<00:31:13.476> a<00:31:13.590> studio<00:31:14.192> model,<00:31:15.577> long-term<00:31:17.271> new<00:31:17.434> individuals,<00:31:18.816> fostering<00:31:19.299> their<00:31:19.460> passions<00:31:19.944> and<00:31:20.041> talent,<00:31:20.928> uh,<00:31:21.073> you<00:31:21.169> want<00:31:21.395> mentors.

00:31:22.685 --> 00:31:25.135
Uh,<00:31:22.781> mentors,<00:31:23.330> it's<00:31:23.749> an<00:31:24.055> in-person<00:31:24.619> kind<00:31:24.861> of<00:31:24.893> thing.

00:31:25.216 --> 00:31:26.860
It's<00:31:25.748> not<00:31:25.925> a<00:31:25.990> remote<00:31:26.393> kind<00:31:26.586> of<00:31:26.780> thing.

00:31:27.538 --> 00:31:27.683
Yeah.

00:31:27.812 --> 00:31:30.345
So,<00:31:28.490> um,<00:31:29.071> we're<00:31:29.296> there,<00:31:29.797> we're<00:31:29.958> in<00:31:30.023> Harlem.

00:31:31.023 --> 00:31:43.638
Secondly,<00:31:32.523> uh,<00:31:33.330> we<00:31:33.508> believe<00:31:34.137> that<00:31:35.202> to<00:31:36.154> really<00:31:36.412> make<00:31:36.718> headway,<00:31:37.783> you<00:31:37.863> have<00:31:38.025> trusted<00:31:38.589> people,<00:31:40.670> passionate<00:31:41.170> people,<00:31:42.138> and<00:31:42.299> people<00:31:42.622> from<00:31:42.864> the<00:31:43.025> community.

00:31:44.380 --> 00:31:46.219
Uh,<00:31:44.864> and,<00:31:45.267> uh,<00:31:45.445> that<00:31:45.687> means<00:31:46.009> Harlem.

00:31:47.469 --> 00:31:49.475
We<00:31:47.582> don't<00:31:47.712> grow<00:31:47.954> people<00:31:48.294> that<00:31:48.585> send<00:31:48.763> them<00:31:48.990> elsewhere.

00:31:49.556 --> 00:32:06.502
We<00:31:49.653> grow<00:31:49.977> people<00:31:50.786> to<00:31:50.883> stay<00:31:51.174> within<00:31:51.417> the<00:31:51.498> community,<00:31:52.728> build<00:31:53.051> companies<00:31:53.617> within<00:31:53.941> the<00:31:54.087> community,<00:31:55.316> and<00:31:55.494> then<00:31:55.719> hopefully<00:31:57.363> through<00:31:58.621> their<00:31:58.782> success<00:31:59.362> and<00:32:00.071> corporate<00:32:00.555> largesse<00:32:02.780> addressing<00:32:04.252> all<00:32:04.430> the<00:32:04.657> other<00:32:04.835> things<00:32:05.142> that<00:32:05.256> have<00:32:05.401> to<00:32:05.547> be<00:32:05.644> done<00:32:05.887> in<00:32:05.968> the<00:32:06.113> community.

00:32:07.165 --> 00:32:07.942
So<00:32:07.262> we're<00:32:07.359> starting<00:32:07.813> there.

00:32:08.848 --> 00:32:11.519
Hopefully<00:32:09.771> some<00:32:09.997> other<00:32:10.175> people<00:32:10.499> might<00:32:10.742> decide<00:32:11.065> to<00:32:11.146> come<00:32:11.308> along.

00:32:12.263 --> 00:32:24.490
We<00:32:12.407> do<00:32:12.568> have<00:32:13.693> one<00:32:13.853> associate<00:32:14.416> who<00:32:14.593> is<00:32:15.155> from<00:32:15.396> another<00:32:15.862> city<00:32:16.264> down<00:32:16.505> the<00:32:16.601> coast<00:32:17.003> that<00:32:17.726> is<00:32:19.076> going<00:32:19.172> to<00:32:19.252> learn<00:32:19.638> here<00:32:19.895> and<00:32:20.682> will<00:32:20.843> probably<00:32:21.181> go<00:32:21.422> there,<00:32:21.749> but<00:32:21.912> it's<00:32:22.646> an<00:32:22.956> in-person<00:32:23.609> kind<00:32:23.854> of<00:32:24.278> thing.

00:32:26.290 --> 00:32:29.048
What<00:32:27.193> do<00:32:27.371> you<00:32:27.532> think<00:32:27.919> makes<00:32:28.242> a<00:32:28.322> great<00:32:28.726> leader?

00:32:29.145 --> 00:32:35.373
Are<00:32:29.226> there<00:32:29.565> specific<00:32:30.259> traits,<00:32:30.694> specific,<00:32:33.566> you<00:32:33.598> know,<00:32:33.905> type<00:32:34.163> of<00:32:34.470> personalities?

00:32:35.438 --> 00:32:36.350
What<00:32:35.599> makes<00:32:35.841> a<00:32:35.890> great<00:32:36.087> leader?

00:32:36.992 --> 00:32:39.620
I<00:32:37.058> mean,<00:32:37.157> you've<00:32:37.322> probably<00:32:37.651> dealt<00:32:37.881> with<00:32:38.240> hundreds<00:32:38.678> and<00:32:38.743> hundreds<00:32:39.101> of<00:32:39.247> leaders.

00:32:40.384 --> 00:32:42.203
What<00:32:40.546> is<00:32:40.644> the<00:32:40.774> commonality<00:32:41.440> between<00:32:41.830> all<00:32:41.992> of<00:32:42.073> them?

00:32:48.365 --> 00:32:59.548
I<00:32:50.390> think<00:32:50.615> they<00:32:51.258> have<00:32:51.500> to<00:32:51.596> really<00:32:51.918> think<00:32:53.542> they<00:32:53.911> have<00:32:55.458> insights<00:32:58.287> versus<00:32:58.610> be<00:32:58.691> the<00:32:58.772> smartest<00:32:59.241> person.

00:33:00.631 --> 00:33:22.307
I<00:33:00.711> think<00:33:00.873> they<00:33:00.922> have<00:33:01.099> to<00:33:01.196> be<00:33:01.503> humble<00:33:01.908> enough<00:33:02.263> to<00:33:04.423> realize<00:33:04.744> they<00:33:04.889> might<00:33:05.226> not<00:33:05.467> be<00:33:05.628> the<00:33:05.708> smartest<00:33:06.174> person,<00:33:07.862> might<00:33:08.183> not<00:33:08.681> know<00:33:09.227> the<00:33:09.549> answer,<00:33:11.332> and<00:33:11.477> therefore<00:33:11.975> have<00:33:12.312> an<00:33:12.521> atmosphere<00:33:13.019> where<00:33:13.341> they<00:33:14.851> have<00:33:15.253> people<00:33:15.735> who<00:33:17.277> aspire<00:33:18.724> to<00:33:18.884> be<00:33:19.109> where<00:33:19.366> they<00:33:19.752> are<00:33:20.555> and<00:33:20.668> feel<00:33:20.957> that<00:33:21.118> they<00:33:21.214> can<00:33:21.519> add<00:33:21.680> to<00:33:21.777> the<00:33:21.841> equation.

00:33:23.480 --> 00:33:29.939
So<00:33:24.171> the<00:33:24.331> traits<00:33:24.733> for<00:33:25.231> a<00:33:25.536> leader<00:33:26.581> are<00:33:26.822> to<00:33:27.224> have<00:33:27.802> a<00:33:27.882> fair<00:33:28.107> amount<00:33:28.429> of<00:33:28.782> self-realization.

00:33:31.261 --> 00:34:02.319
Insight<00:33:31.890> into<00:33:32.794> themselves,<00:33:33.520> the<00:33:33.682> ability<00:33:34.973> to<00:33:35.780> believe,<00:33:36.409> as<00:33:36.587> good<00:33:36.829> as<00:33:36.974> they<00:33:37.151> think<00:33:37.458> they<00:33:37.716> are,<00:33:39.647> that<00:33:39.955> there<00:33:40.133> is<00:33:40.311> more<00:33:40.619> to<00:33:40.781> be<00:33:40.943> learned,<00:33:43.698> to<00:33:44.605> feel<00:33:45.059> that<00:33:46.274> also<00:33:46.615> in<00:33:46.777> this<00:33:47.506> journey<00:33:48.057> of<00:33:48.477> getting<00:33:49.448> through<00:33:50.419> Maslow's<00:33:51.066> need<00:33:51.454> hierarchy,<00:33:53.088> getting<00:33:53.411> to<00:33:53.573> self-actualization,<00:33:54.948> that<00:33:56.378> It's<00:33:56.620> there<00:33:56.797> in<00:33:56.893> front<00:33:57.199> of<00:33:57.280> them,<00:33:57.441> and<00:33:57.586> the<00:33:57.682> only<00:33:57.924> way<00:33:58.181> it<00:33:58.326> will<00:33:58.487> be<00:33:58.664> achieved<00:33:59.920> is<00:34:00.741> through<00:34:01.208> collective<00:34:02.013> labor.

00:34:02.788 --> 00:34:20.879
So<00:34:02.853> somebody<00:34:03.584> who<00:34:03.747> really<00:34:04.136> understands<00:34:05.679> and<00:34:06.102> believes<00:34:06.735> in<00:34:08.684> the<00:34:08.847> power<00:34:09.253> of<00:34:09.431> the<00:34:09.594> team<00:34:11.771> versus<00:34:12.372> a<00:34:12.502> conviction<00:34:13.071> that<00:34:13.965> one<00:34:14.144> was<00:34:14.453> born<00:34:15.444> with<00:34:18.142> all<00:34:18.223> the<00:34:18.384> things<00:34:19.275> to<00:34:19.356> solve<00:34:19.761> all<00:34:19.939> the<00:34:20.020> problems<00:34:20.490> of<00:34:20.587> the<00:34:20.733> world.

00:34:22.015 --> 00:34:24.960
And<00:34:22.096> therefore<00:34:22.418> a<00:34:22.579> great<00:34:22.884> desire<00:34:24.027> to<00:34:24.172> create<00:34:24.590> the<00:34:24.735> team.

00:34:26.215 --> 00:34:33.388
So<00:34:26.424> that<00:34:26.762> ambition<00:34:27.406> to<00:34:27.567> create<00:34:27.905> a<00:34:28.050> team<00:34:28.919> creates<00:34:29.160> the<00:34:29.257> ambition<00:34:29.804> to<00:34:30.791> create<00:34:31.035> the<00:34:31.132> lead<00:34:31.603> kind<00:34:31.846> of<00:34:32.009> leadership<00:34:32.479> that<00:34:32.658> I<00:34:32.739> most<00:34:32.983> admire.

00:34:35.442 --> 00:34:36.106
What<00:34:35.588> are<00:34:35.669> your<00:34:35.766> thoughts?

00:34:36.155 --> 00:34:38.779
Like,<00:34:36.333> we're<00:34:36.478> heading<00:34:36.802> into<00:34:38.115> an<00:34:38.260> election<00:34:38.681> year.

00:34:38.843 --> 00:34:46.608
I<00:34:38.924> mean,<00:34:39.070> we're<00:34:39.248> in<00:34:39.394> it,<00:34:39.896> but<00:34:40.382> we're<00:34:40.544> heading<00:34:41.111> kind<00:34:41.273> of<00:34:41.354> barreling<00:34:41.921> towards<00:34:42.407> an<00:34:42.488> election<00:34:42.958> here<00:34:43.055> in<00:34:43.136> November<00:34:43.867> that<00:34:44.356> I<00:34:44.438> think<00:34:44.666> is,<00:34:44.993> you<00:34:45.091> know,<00:34:45.319> bringing<00:34:45.645> a<00:34:45.727> lot<00:34:45.906> of<00:34:45.988> people<00:34:46.233> uncertainty.

00:34:47.504 --> 00:34:49.968
The<00:34:47.600> macroeconomic<00:34:48.535> environment<00:34:48.857> is<00:34:49.034> really<00:34:49.211> fascinating.

00:34:50.016 --> 00:34:51.869
There's<00:34:50.467> good<00:34:50.709> parts<00:34:51.047> of<00:34:51.112> the<00:34:51.450> economy.

00:34:51.933 --> 00:34:53.270
There's<00:34:52.159> really<00:34:52.400> bad<00:34:52.658> parts<00:34:52.867> of<00:34:52.899> the<00:34:53.028> economy.

00:34:53.318 --> 00:34:54.156
There's<00:34:53.528> people<00:34:53.673> who<00:34:53.705> are<00:34:53.785> struggling.

00:34:54.204 --> 00:34:55.203
There's<00:34:54.349> people<00:34:54.558> who<00:34:54.607> are<00:34:54.655> doing<00:34:54.897> really<00:34:55.058> well.

00:34:55.799 --> 00:34:59.378
What<00:34:55.943> are<00:34:56.024> your<00:34:56.105> thoughts<00:34:56.298> on<00:34:56.347> like<00:34:56.606> just<00:34:56.768> the<00:34:56.865> macro<00:34:57.497> environment<00:34:58.697> we're<00:34:58.859> in<00:34:59.021> right<00:34:59.199> now?

00:35:00.318 --> 00:35:04.288
And<00:35:01.468> what<00:35:01.614> are<00:35:01.695> your<00:35:01.873> expectations<00:35:02.765> for<00:35:02.846> how<00:35:03.154> this<00:35:03.478> year<00:35:03.721> shakes<00:35:04.126> out?

00:35:11.815 --> 00:35:13.382
The,<00:35:11.835> um,<00:35:11.855> unfortunately<00:35:12.249> I'm<00:35:12.331> not<00:35:12.725> very<00:35:13.135> optimistic.

00:35:14.789 --> 00:35:15.581
Uh,<00:35:15.436> at<00:35:15.517> all.

00:35:15.694 --> 00:35:29.991
I<00:35:15.791> think,<00:35:16.163> uh,<00:35:16.422> we're<00:35:16.568> getting,<00:35:16.891> uh,<00:35:17.861> uh,<00:35:18.605> uh,<00:35:19.090> very<00:35:19.397> strong<00:35:19.914> signals,<00:35:22.323> just<00:35:22.485> like<00:35:22.647> we<00:35:22.808> are<00:35:23.618> getting<00:35:23.862> signals<00:35:24.429> from<00:35:24.591> the<00:35:24.672> environment<00:35:25.175> that,<00:35:25.889> that<00:35:26.699> bad<00:35:27.089> things<00:35:27.364> are<00:35:27.429> going<00:35:27.591> to<00:35:27.737> happen<00:35:28.094> unless<00:35:28.402> something,<00:35:29.440> uh,<00:35:29.602> changes.

00:35:30.105 --> 00:35:35.257
And<00:35:30.202> so<00:35:31.305> the,<00:35:32.306> um,<00:35:32.487> uh,<00:35:32.817> I'm<00:35:32.982> not<00:35:33.246> at<00:35:33.377> all<00:35:33.707> optimistic<00:35:34.400> about<00:35:34.861> outcomes.

00:35:37.180 --> 00:35:40.095
The,<00:35:37.504> um,<00:35:38.476> uh,<00:35:39.220> I'm<00:35:39.382> concerned<00:35:39.722> about<00:35:40.030> it.

00:35:42.318 --> 00:35:43.532
The,<00:35:42.577> but<00:35:42.722> I<00:35:42.803> haven't<00:35:43.127> given<00:35:43.451> up.

00:35:44.422 --> 00:35:47.191
And<00:35:44.520> so<00:35:44.827> one<00:35:45.005> should<00:35:45.248> do<00:35:45.653> their,<00:35:46.462> their<00:35:46.786> parts.

00:35:48.081 --> 00:36:00.621
And<00:35:48.259> so<00:35:49.441> the,<00:35:51.760> without,<00:35:53.312> I<00:35:53.328> don't<00:35:53.474> think<00:35:53.652> it's,<00:35:54.040> it's<00:35:55.172> a<00:35:55.495> particular<00:35:57.274> issue<00:35:58.001> that<00:35:58.163> I<00:35:58.244> would<00:35:58.487> rather<00:35:58.826> hang<00:35:59.069> my<00:35:59.295> hat<00:35:59.538> on,<00:36:00.362> on<00:36:00.508> it.

00:36:00.767 --> 00:36:01.883
And<00:36:00.928> it's<00:36:01.074> not<00:36:01.252> one<00:36:01.576> party.

00:36:01.964 --> 00:36:06.495
I<00:36:01.980> think<00:36:02.223> it's<00:36:02.385> actually<00:36:03.356> a<00:36:03.372> number<00:36:03.841> of<00:36:04.084> issues<00:36:04.488> that<00:36:05.200> people<00:36:05.427> have<00:36:05.605> got<00:36:05.783> to<00:36:05.945> come<00:36:06.187> together.

00:36:07.356 --> 00:36:30.415
And<00:36:07.933> try<00:36:08.174> to<00:36:08.318> decide,<00:36:09.536> listen,<00:36:10.978> I<00:36:11.138> don't—<00:36:12.660> it's<00:36:12.821> more<00:36:13.285> less<00:36:13.478> important<00:36:13.942> for<00:36:14.263> me<00:36:14.567> to<00:36:14.727> have<00:36:15.144> my<00:36:15.529> way<00:36:16.346> and<00:36:16.506> my<00:36:16.827> belief<00:36:17.388> in<00:36:17.468> the<00:36:17.628> way<00:36:18.029> to<00:36:18.253> do<00:36:18.445> things,<00:36:19.551> as<00:36:19.647> opposed<00:36:20.064> to,<00:36:20.737> as<00:36:20.849> opposed<00:36:21.314> to<00:36:22.579> bringing<00:36:23.156> the<00:36:23.797> group<00:36:24.102> together<00:36:24.599> for<00:36:25.223> a<00:36:25.320> unified<00:36:25.945> discussion<00:36:27.467> and<00:36:27.563> getting<00:36:27.867> the<00:36:27.964> compromises<00:36:28.765> so<00:36:28.989> we<00:36:29.069> can<00:36:29.326> take<00:36:29.582> a<00:36:29.662> step<00:36:29.983> forward.

00:36:31.313 --> 00:36:43.029
Uh,<00:36:32.450> the<00:36:36.535> until<00:36:36.777> more<00:36:37.099> people<00:36:37.583> do<00:36:37.824> that,<00:36:38.227> I<00:36:38.308> think<00:36:38.469> we're<00:36:38.565> gonna<00:36:38.855> continue<00:36:39.339> on<00:36:39.516> the<00:36:40.096> same<00:36:40.547> trend<00:36:41.031> we<00:36:41.127> seem<00:36:41.385> to<00:36:41.530> be<00:36:41.675> heading<00:36:41.998> in<00:36:42.094> terms<00:36:42.417> of<00:36:42.562> the<00:36:42.658> environment.

00:36:45.000 --> 00:36:53.910
Now,<00:36:45.583> one<00:36:45.696> of<00:36:45.826> the<00:36:45.923> very,<00:36:46.328> very<00:36:47.397> significant<00:36:48.174> things<00:36:50.037> is<00:36:51.835> to<00:36:51.916> get<00:36:52.078> people<00:36:52.386> in<00:36:52.483> the<00:36:52.629> room<00:36:52.888> together<00:36:53.277> more<00:36:53.601> often.

00:36:54.916 --> 00:36:58.778
One<00:36:55.078> of<00:36:55.159> the<00:36:55.322> very<00:36:55.662> significant<00:36:56.295> things<00:36:56.458> is<00:36:56.490> to<00:36:56.685> get<00:36:56.847> 'em<00:36:57.513> maybe<00:36:58.064> living<00:36:58.470> together.

00:36:59.445 --> 00:37:10.809
So<00:36:59.671> they<00:36:59.913> consider<00:37:00.881> themselves<00:37:01.543> as<00:37:01.769> part<00:37:02.269> of<00:37:03.383> a<00:37:03.625> community<00:37:04.997> versus<00:37:05.320> separate<00:37:05.820> communities<00:37:06.466> trying<00:37:06.950> to<00:37:07.741> make<00:37:07.999> sure<00:37:08.306> that<00:37:08.485> they<00:37:08.728> protect<00:37:09.769> their<00:37:10.094> way<00:37:10.273> of<00:37:10.500> living.

00:37:11.736 --> 00:37:24.145
And<00:37:12.793> so<00:37:15.853> my<00:37:16.835> negativity<00:37:17.882> perhaps<00:37:18.445> drives<00:37:20.699> the<00:37:22.310> urgency<00:37:22.793> and<00:37:22.889> importance<00:37:23.340> of<00:37:23.437> what<00:37:23.485> I'm<00:37:23.678> trying<00:37:23.936> to<00:37:23.984> do.

00:37:24.652 --> 00:37:36.101
Which<00:37:24.894> is<00:37:25.684> do<00:37:25.781> something<00:37:26.410> in<00:37:26.507> the<00:37:26.652> city,<00:37:27.072> bring<00:37:27.798> people<00:37:28.185> together,<00:37:29.476> uh,<00:37:29.734> in<00:37:29.879> a,<00:37:30.540> uh,<00:37:32.057> in<00:37:32.540> a,<00:37:33.024> um,<00:37:34.796> issue<00:37:35.360> of<00:37:35.779> interest.

00:37:36.682 --> 00:37:40.758
And<00:37:36.746> hopefully<00:37:37.133> other<00:37:37.310> people<00:37:37.697> will<00:37:37.858> have<00:37:38.051> an<00:37:38.132> example<00:37:38.648> and<00:37:38.744> decide<00:37:39.083> to,<00:37:39.324> uh,<00:37:40.340> uh,<00:37:40.533> follow.

00:37:40.807 --> 00:37:50.168
Some—<00:37:41.016> hopefully<00:37:41.355> some<00:37:41.580> people<00:37:41.790> will<00:37:41.902> listen<00:37:42.209> to<00:37:42.321> this<00:37:42.611> and<00:37:42.773> decide<00:37:43.772> to<00:37:43.917> adapt<00:37:44.239> for<00:37:44.303> themselves<00:37:44.948> what<00:37:45.109> they<00:37:45.206> may<00:37:45.447> think<00:37:45.770> is<00:37:45.931> a<00:37:46.011> solution,<00:37:47.204> um,<00:37:47.784> and<00:37:47.945> do<00:37:48.106> it<00:37:48.186> through<00:37:48.509> bringing<00:37:49.298> people<00:37:49.653> together.

00:37:52.252 --> 00:37:56.815
Finally,<00:37:52.654> at<00:37:52.734> CEO.com,<00:37:53.441> we<00:37:53.537> believe<00:37:53.843> the<00:37:53.939> chances<00:37:54.341> one<00:37:54.566> gives<00:37:54.823> is<00:37:54.903> just<00:37:55.144> as<00:37:55.224> important<00:37:55.546> as<00:37:55.690> the<00:37:55.771> chances<00:37:56.172> one<00:37:56.349> takes.

00:37:57.618 --> 00:38:01.811
And<00:37:57.714> I<00:37:57.859> wonder<00:37:58.180> when<00:37:58.502> you<00:37:58.743> hear<00:37:59.080> that,<00:37:59.465> who<00:37:59.626> gave<00:37:59.947> you<00:38:00.108> a<00:38:00.140> chance<00:38:00.606> to<00:38:00.751> get<00:38:00.911> you<00:38:01.008> to<00:38:01.088> where<00:38:01.313> you<00:38:01.425> are<00:38:01.570> today?

00:38:05.537 --> 00:38:17.598
It<00:38:05.602> started<00:38:06.022> randomly<00:38:06.750> with,<00:38:06.993> I<00:38:07.155> guess,<00:38:09.177> in<00:38:09.338> reality,<00:38:12.735> the—<00:38:13.463> and<00:38:13.576> I'm<00:38:13.722> so<00:38:13.884> sorry,<00:38:14.191> I<00:38:14.240> forget<00:38:14.420> his<00:38:14.584> name—<00:38:15.583> the<00:38:15.730> admissions<00:38:16.189> director<00:38:16.729> of<00:38:16.877> Yale<00:38:17.139> University.

00:38:18.647 --> 00:38:33.977
Back<00:38:19.115> in<00:38:20.003> the<00:38:20.100> '60s<00:38:21.456> who<00:38:21.941> decided<00:38:22.425> he'd<00:38:22.667> expand<00:38:24.524> the<00:38:24.702> participation<00:38:25.816> of<00:38:26.963> underrepresented<00:38:28.567> minorities<00:38:29.717> and<00:38:30.025> other<00:38:30.365> people<00:38:32.471> into<00:38:33.832> Yale.

00:38:34.950 --> 00:39:00.984
So,<00:38:36.595> and<00:38:36.660> this<00:38:36.821> was<00:38:36.934> not<00:38:37.160> only<00:38:37.467> Yale,<00:38:37.822> some<00:38:38.112> other<00:38:38.290> schools,<00:38:38.757> but<00:38:39.645> that<00:38:39.903> brought<00:38:40.226> me<00:38:40.613> out<00:38:40.855> of<00:38:41.420> where<00:38:41.517> I<00:38:41.581> was<00:38:41.759> probably<00:38:42.243> headed<00:38:43.453> back<00:38:43.921> into<00:38:46.456> the<00:38:46.536> University<00:38:47.099> of<00:38:47.243> Hawaii,<00:38:49.493> or<00:38:50.939> a<00:38:52.321> Catholic<00:38:53.349> university<00:38:54.635> on<00:38:54.667> the<00:38:54.860> West<00:38:54.972> Coast,<00:38:55.519> or<00:38:55.695> the<00:38:55.856> military,<00:38:58.412> the,<00:38:59.136> out<00:38:59.328> into<00:38:59.634> the<00:39:00.518> East<00:39:00.743> Coast.

00:39:01.868 --> 00:39:06.789
And<00:39:03.235> that<00:39:03.412> was<00:39:05.341> the<00:39:05.567> break<00:39:06.371> that<00:39:06.548> you<00:39:06.628> want.

00:39:07.593 --> 00:39:23.715
Having<00:39:07.898> arrived<00:39:08.300> there,<00:39:09.764> there<00:39:09.860> were<00:39:10.246> other<00:39:10.488> individuals<00:39:11.115> who<00:39:11.758> who<00:39:11.838> decided,<00:39:12.499> just<00:39:12.741> as<00:39:13.530> we<00:39:13.627> saw<00:39:14.014> at<00:39:14.127> McKinsey<00:39:14.658> when<00:39:14.836> we<00:39:14.981> branched<00:39:15.464> out<00:39:16.205> to<00:39:16.592> other<00:39:16.769> individuals,<00:39:17.430> someone<00:39:17.800> who<00:39:17.897> wanted<00:39:18.203> to<00:39:18.284> see<00:39:18.606> the<00:39:18.703> program<00:39:19.251> through<00:39:20.137> and<00:39:20.234> adopted<00:39:20.943> the<00:39:21.120> individuals<00:39:21.829> and<00:39:22.007> mentored<00:39:22.555> them<00:39:23.377> into<00:39:23.683> it.

00:39:23.780 --> 00:39:32.367
Because<00:39:24.167> just<00:39:24.328> because<00:39:24.586> you're<00:39:24.731> accepted<00:39:25.247> in<00:39:25.311> an<00:39:25.456> organization<00:39:26.746> does<00:39:26.988> not<00:39:27.326> mean<00:39:27.729> that<00:39:29.324> you,<00:39:30.628> you<00:39:31.272> know,<00:39:31.594> automatically<00:39:32.077> get<00:39:32.303> there.

00:39:32.480 --> 00:39:33.397
You<00:39:32.560> got<00:39:32.673> to<00:39:32.802> get<00:39:33.349> there.

00:39:33.446 --> 00:39:34.460
A<00:39:33.462> lot<00:39:33.784> of<00:39:33.913> other<00:39:34.090> steps.

00:39:35.056 --> 00:39:41.863
So<00:39:35.281> seeing<00:39:35.700> the<00:39:35.845> people<00:39:36.247> who<00:39:36.425> crossed<00:39:36.892> the<00:39:37.053> lines<00:39:38.066> and<00:39:38.229> decided<00:39:38.718> to<00:39:38.881> reach<00:39:39.272> out,<00:39:40.168> uh,<00:39:40.739> is,<00:39:41.146> uh,<00:39:41.407> what<00:39:41.635> caused<00:39:41.830> it.

00:39:41.961 --> 00:39:43.606
And<00:39:42.058> that<00:39:42.205> was<00:39:42.694> totally<00:39:43.020> fortuitous.

00:39:45.694 --> 00:39:47.616
Greg,<00:39:46.243> thank<00:39:46.421> you<00:39:46.502> so<00:39:46.744> much<00:39:47.051> for<00:39:47.148> joining<00:39:47.535> us.

00:39:47.859 --> 00:39:51.687
Um,<00:39:48.101> man,<00:39:48.343> I've<00:39:48.424> learned<00:39:48.618> a<00:39:48.682> lot<00:39:48.925> in<00:39:49.328> the<00:39:49.393> short<00:39:49.571> time<00:39:49.813> we've<00:39:49.942> been<00:39:50.039> able<00:39:50.249> to<00:39:50.879> spend<00:39:51.251> with<00:39:51.347> each<00:39:51.509> other.

00:39:52.220 --> 00:39:53.738
Best<00:39:52.462> of<00:39:52.543> luck<00:39:52.704> with<00:39:52.817> everything<00:39:53.270> you're<00:39:53.367> doing.

00:39:53.851 --> 00:39:55.190
Congrats<00:39:54.416> on<00:39:54.513> everything<00:39:54.820> you're<00:39:54.950> doing.

00:39:55.287 --> 00:39:56.444

00:39:56.749 --> 00:39:59.207
You<00:39:57.006> don't<00:39:57.231> look<00:39:57.633> anywhere<00:39:57.938> near<00:39:58.195> 70,<00:39:58.902> by<00:39:58.998> the<00:39:59.143> way.

00:39:59.255 --> 00:40:02.565
Like,<00:39:59.496> it's,<00:39:59.721> it's,<00:40:00.508> it<00:40:00.605> seems<00:40:00.830> like<00:40:00.926> you<00:40:01.071> got<00:40:01.231> another<00:40:01.376> 100<00:40:01.794> years<00:40:02.131> left<00:40:02.436> in<00:40:02.533> you.

00:40:02.629 --> 00:40:04.883
So<00:40:02.999> thank<00:40:03.191> you<00:40:03.320> so<00:40:03.513> much<00:40:03.818> for<00:40:03.882> everything<00:40:04.220> you're<00:40:04.364> doing<00:40:04.541> in<00:40:04.691> the<00:40:04.776> world.

00:40:05.958 --> 00:40:07.757
Thank<00:40:06.136> you<00:40:06.282> very<00:40:06.460> much,<00:40:07.562> Clint.

00:40:08.065 --> 00:40:08.891
