# Taskrabbit's CEO manages by zip Code

The family got to South Dakota in February. Ania Smith was 12\. She and her brother spoke no English, and their parents had put them in a small parochial school in Sioux Falls where a teacher noticed. When the school year ended a few months later, the teacher kept showing up. Every morning that summer she met the two kids at the school and read with them for an hour. Nobody paid her. By fall, Smith could read at grade level.

"I feel like she just took a chance on us," Smith said on the CEO.com Podcast. "I'm still in touch with that teacher."

Smith has been CEO of Taskrabbit [since August 2020](https://www.taskrabbit.com/press/release/ania-smith-named-chief-executive-officer-at-taskrabbit?ref=ceo.com). The company operates in eight countries and inside more than 240 IKEA stores. Before that, she ran courier operations for Uber Eats, and before that, she spent three years at Airbnb on the host side. Walmart eCommerce, Expedia, and L.E.K. Consulting came earlier. She told the podcast that the whole run is a little hard to explain from where she started.

"I grew up in South Dakota, so very far from Silicon Valley, very far from New York and finance and the whole business school world and all of that," she said. "And yet I feel that because of people who have taken a chance on me, I've been able to really do something that's sort of beyond my dreams."

The other person she named was Brian Roberts, the former Lyft CFO now at Andreessen Horowitz, who has been pushing her since they worked together at Walmart. "He would push me pretty hard sometimes, but I really appreciate that he always believed that I could sort of take the next step."

Most of Smith's career has been on the supply side of a marketplace. Hosts at Airbnb, couriers at Uber Eats, and now Taskers, the people who show up to mount the TV or haul the couch. She said the thing she carried from job to job is that a marketplace will not let you manage it from a spreadsheet.

"In a marketplace, you really can't look at averages and totals or things in aggregate," she said. "If we're trying to find new customers in Seattle that really need cleaning, we better have a lot of taskers in Seattle who can provide those services." The match has to hold in a specific neighborhood at a specific hour at a price both sides will accept, or the whole thing is theoretical.

That is where AI lives at Taskrabbit. Smith said the company has been using large language models for a while, not for a chatbot but for the match itself. The platform asks the client more about the job, how big the TV is, what kind of wall it's going on, and uses that to find the Tasker who has done that exact job before. Customer service, marketing, and engineering are on the list too. The match came first.

Smith has said elsewhere that AI is not coming for her supply. In April, she told [Entrepreneur](https://www.entrepreneur.com/entrepreneurs/thought-leaders/tips-to-maximize-earnings-on-taskrabbit-from-ceo-ania-smith?ref=ceo.com) that the business has grown to about five times its size since she took over, and that a recent college graduate in Manhattan cleared more than $200,000 in his first year on the platform mounting TVs off a scooter. "Still today, in order to mount your TV or clean your house, you need a human," she said.

Taskrabbit went fully remote after Smith arrived and closed its offices. She said the decision was partly about hiring. Recruiting in 2021 and 2022 was hard enough without being tied to one city. She has not reversed it, but she is not pretending it's free.

"Over the last four or five years, we've also realized that spending time together in person leads to the ability for teams, in particular, to collaborate, which I think is really hard to replicate online," she said. Her own leadership team meets in person often. The rest of the company gets rented space for short stretches, and she wants more of it.

The cost on her side is personal. "I know for myself that when I go into the office and see people all day, it's super exciting. But because I don't do it every day, I find it draining for someone like me who's an extrovert. And for many people who are introverts, it must be double or triple that." Then the reverse: "When I'm here by myself all day, just sort of stuck in my office, I also feel that feeling of being very alone." Her fix is a walk, outside appointments, travel, and running three times a week. "I hate the running part, but I love what it does for my mind, and that's why I do it."

Asked what makes a good leader, Smith said it didn't come to her naturally, and she doesn't think it has to. She named three things. Spend most of your time with customers listening to the problem instead of jumping to a fix, which she admits is her instinct. Take risks that are calibrated to the stage of the company, because a company that takes too few is choosing slow growth. And hire people who will tell you you're wrong. "If we can't do that within our senior leadership team, it's very hard to expect the rest of the organization to operate that way."

Her mornings start with a habit borrowed from the executive coach Marshall Goldsmith: five minutes writing down what she intends to get done that day, measured against the week and the month. She said she picked it up about a year ago so the day would not be entirely reactive. Then news, a workout if she can, and a few minutes with her kids before they head out. After that, she said, no day is typical. "I don't wish that they were, honestly, because when they're not typical, I end up learning a lot more."

Taskrabbit has belonged to IKEA's Ingka Group since 2017\. Smith called IKEA "fascinating, fascinating" and then spent a while trying to explain it: two companies, a complicated structure, owned by a foundation, most of the profit going back into the business or to the foundation's work on climate and child poverty. She also said working with a company that size is not always simple for a marketplace that moves faster. "They work slightly differently than we do." She sits on the [board of Wingstop](https://ir.wingstop.com/esg/board-of-directors/?ref=ceo.com) as well, since 2022.

She follows the housing market closely because Taskrabbit's business tracks it, especially single-family homes. Her view is that a generation of buyers anchored to 3- and 4-percent mortgages is dealing with recency bias. "If you talk to people who are in their 60s and 70s, they'll often talk to you about their mortgage rates being at 17, 18 percent." Rates settling around 5 or 6, she said, are probably here for a while. As for predicting the broader economy: "Oh, if I knew, I think I would get paid a lot more."

The company is betting people will move anyway. This summer Taskrabbit launched a global brand campaign, ["When Life Happens,"](https://www.taskrabbit.com/press/release/taskrabbit-tackles-the-messy-reality-of-lifes-chaotic-chapters-in-new-global-when-life-happens-campaign?ref=ceo.com) built around relocations and breakups and new babies, and in July it [folded Dolly](https://www.taskrabbit.com/press/release/taskrabbit-unifies-marketplace-operations-rebranding-dolly-to-taskrabbit-delivery-nationwide?ref=ceo.com), the delivery company it bought in 2024, into a single brand called Taskrabbit Delivery.

On culture, Smith said she tells her teams they will not win by having a great culture, and they cannot win without one. The company recently rewrote its core values because the old ones dated from a smaller, more American, less complicated Taskrabbit. She had the teams do it with her. "It was exciting, but it was a lot of work."

When she has time to read, she turns to biographies, ideally read aloud by the subject. Katharine Graham. Trevor Noah. Nicholas Kristof's memoir was on her nightstand, with Ketanji Brown Jackson's waiting underneath it.

00:00:09.896 --> 00:00:11.706
Anya,<00:00:10.090> thank<00:00:10.300> you<00:00:10.333> so<00:00:10.543> much<00:00:10.720> for<00:00:10.866> coming<00:00:11.205> on<00:00:11.286> the<00:00:11.367> show.

00:00:11.770 --> 00:00:18.006
You're<00:00:11.932> the<00:00:12.013> CEO<00:00:12.481> of<00:00:12.578> TaskRabbit,<00:00:13.467> but<00:00:13.548> you've<00:00:13.709> had<00:00:13.871> an<00:00:14.016> incredible<00:00:14.598> career<00:00:15.082> at<00:00:15.179> a<00:00:15.228> variety<00:00:15.890> of<00:00:15.971> different<00:00:16.294> places,<00:00:16.924> which,<00:00:17.182> which<00:00:17.409> we<00:00:17.506> can<00:00:17.667> get<00:00:17.813> into.

00:00:18.700 --> 00:00:25.438
But<00:00:18.862> tell<00:00:18.959> us<00:00:19.057> how<00:00:19.203> you<00:00:19.300> became<00:00:19.787> the<00:00:19.966> CEO<00:00:20.762> of<00:00:20.908> TaskRabbit<00:00:21.720> and<00:00:21.817> what<00:00:21.980> TaskRabbit<00:00:22.548> is<00:00:22.727> if,<00:00:23.051> if<00:00:23.262> someone<00:00:23.944> somehow<00:00:25.049> doesn't<00:00:25.325> know.

00:00:26.814 --> 00:00:28.897
Well,<00:00:26.974> first<00:00:27.214> of<00:00:27.359> all,<00:00:27.455> thank<00:00:27.679> you<00:00:27.711> so<00:00:27.920> much<00:00:28.080> for<00:00:28.240> having<00:00:28.657> me.

00:00:29.939 --> 00:00:32.119
Let<00:00:30.036> me<00:00:30.180> tell<00:00:30.356> you<00:00:30.484> a<00:00:30.581> little<00:00:30.821> bit<00:00:31.045> first<00:00:31.302> about<00:00:31.526> TaskRabbit.

00:00:32.200 --> 00:00:43.501
So<00:00:32.408> we're<00:00:32.504> a<00:00:32.584> digital<00:00:32.985> platform<00:00:33.626> that<00:00:33.867> really<00:00:34.187> connects<00:00:34.909> people<00:00:35.293> to<00:00:35.550> very<00:00:35.871> skilled<00:00:36.512> and<00:00:36.656> reliable<00:00:37.233> taskers<00:00:38.499> from<00:00:38.676> their<00:00:38.820> local<00:00:39.141> community<00:00:39.734> so<00:00:39.958> that<00:00:40.183> they<00:00:40.423> can<00:00:40.984> have<00:00:41.241> their<00:00:41.385> problems<00:00:41.946> at<00:00:42.026> home<00:00:42.940> solved.

00:00:43.902 --> 00:00:48.182
So<00:00:44.831> primarily<00:00:45.729> really<00:00:46.450> focusing<00:00:47.236> on<00:00:47.316> home<00:00:47.589> services.

00:00:48.839 --> 00:01:03.619
And<00:00:48.951> so<00:00:49.336> whether<00:00:49.721> it's,<00:00:50.298> you<00:00:50.378> know,<00:00:50.795> needing<00:00:51.163> someone<00:00:51.516> to<00:00:51.644> help<00:00:51.965> you<00:00:52.077> assemble<00:00:52.526> a<00:00:52.606> piece<00:00:52.782> of<00:00:52.863> furniture<00:00:53.728> or<00:00:53.969> clean<00:00:54.610> out<00:00:54.770> your<00:00:54.930> backyard<00:00:55.972> or<00:00:56.373> hang<00:00:56.774> up<00:00:57.175> a<00:00:57.736> photo<00:00:58.617> or<00:00:59.291> mount<00:00:59.595> your<00:00:59.755> TV<00:01:00.541> or<00:01:01.022> anything<00:01:01.439> like<00:01:01.743> that,<00:01:02.000> we're<00:01:02.160> here<00:01:02.481> to<00:01:02.801> really<00:01:03.186> help<00:01:03.507> you.

00:01:03.907 --> 00:01:12.980
And<00:01:04.324> we've<00:01:05.206> been<00:01:05.366> around<00:01:05.687> for<00:01:05.911> quite<00:01:06.087> some<00:01:06.328> time,<00:01:07.851> definitely<00:01:08.492> very<00:01:09.293> popular<00:01:09.774> here<00:01:10.175> in<00:01:10.255> the<00:01:10.303> United<00:01:10.640> States,<00:01:10.977> but<00:01:11.217> we're<00:01:11.457> in<00:01:11.682> 8<00:01:11.842> countries<00:01:12.403> overall.

00:01:13.301 --> 00:01:16.779
So<00:01:13.686> it's<00:01:14.038> been<00:01:14.263> quite<00:01:14.503> a<00:01:14.583> journey<00:01:14.984> and<00:01:15.128> it's<00:01:15.545> been<00:01:15.705> really<00:01:15.946> fun<00:01:16.186> to<00:01:16.347> be<00:01:16.571> here.

00:01:17.533 --> 00:01:22.727
I<00:01:17.870> got<00:01:18.094> here<00:01:18.254> about<00:01:18.431> 4<00:01:18.815> years<00:01:19.072> ago,<00:01:19.296> which<00:01:19.473> I<00:01:19.553> can't<00:01:19.953> really<00:01:21.396> believe<00:01:21.781> that<00:01:21.893> it's<00:01:22.102> been<00:01:22.262> that<00:01:22.438> long.

00:01:23.224 --> 00:01:28.209
And<00:01:23.384> this<00:01:23.560> is<00:01:23.705> after<00:01:24.041> coming<00:01:24.442> from<00:01:24.682> Uber,<00:01:25.243> which<00:01:25.484> is<00:01:25.708> of<00:01:25.869> course<00:01:26.125> another<00:01:26.526> big<00:01:27.488> marketplace.

00:01:28.273 --> 00:01:30.262
And<00:01:28.369> prior<00:01:28.690> to<00:01:28.850> that,<00:01:29.027> I<00:01:29.107> spent<00:01:29.331> some<00:01:29.443> time<00:01:29.636> at<00:01:29.812> Airbnb.

00:01:30.390 --> 00:01:39.439
So<00:01:31.176> I've<00:01:31.337> been<00:01:31.577> in<00:01:31.673> this<00:01:31.834> space<00:01:32.604> of<00:01:33.262> marketplaces<00:01:34.529> for<00:01:34.690> quite<00:01:34.802> some<00:01:35.107> time,<00:01:35.829> especially<00:01:36.391> when<00:01:36.551> it<00:01:36.696> comes<00:01:37.032> to<00:01:37.835> marketplaces<00:01:38.797> with<00:01:38.958> people.

00:01:39.824 --> 00:01:44.124
And<00:01:40.402> that's<00:01:40.723> been—<00:01:41.188> it's<00:01:41.686> been<00:01:41.846> a<00:01:41.990> fascinating<00:01:42.793> journey<00:01:43.130> and<00:01:43.354> a<00:01:43.370> lot<00:01:43.611> to<00:01:43.771> learn.

00:01:44.959 --> 00:01:47.221
And<00:01:45.280> it's<00:01:45.520> still<00:01:45.841> a<00:01:45.873> fairly<00:01:46.419> young<00:01:46.740> industry.

00:01:47.317 --> 00:01:49.997
So<00:01:48.184> a<00:01:48.264> lot<00:01:48.585> still<00:01:48.906> for<00:01:49.146> us<00:01:49.307> to<00:01:49.467> figure<00:01:49.788> out.

00:01:51.072 --> 00:01:54.858
What<00:01:51.280> did<00:01:51.377> you<00:01:51.473> bring<00:01:51.778> from<00:01:51.954> your<00:01:52.099> experience<00:01:52.740> at<00:01:52.901> Uber<00:01:53.238> and<00:01:53.382> Airbnb<00:01:53.960> to<00:01:54.120> TaskRabbit?

00:01:54.907 --> 00:01:57.859
Like,<00:01:55.083> what<00:01:55.163> did<00:01:55.324> you<00:01:55.548> learn<00:01:55.805> from<00:01:56.046> those<00:01:56.848> that<00:01:56.992> you're<00:01:57.105> now<00:01:57.329> applying?

00:01:59.109 --> 00:02:00.151
So,<00:01:59.558> so<00:01:59.831> much.

00:02:01.001 --> 00:02:06.676
I,<00:02:01.257> you<00:02:01.354> know,<00:02:01.642> I<00:02:01.899> felt<00:02:02.364> when<00:02:02.524> I<00:02:02.604> was<00:02:02.716> at<00:02:02.860> Airbnb,<00:02:03.325> it<00:02:03.598> was<00:02:03.742> sort<00:02:04.063> of<00:02:04.223> still<00:02:05.089> a<00:02:05.185> kind<00:02:05.570> of<00:02:05.810> early<00:02:06.227> days.

00:02:06.788 --> 00:02:08.631
So<00:02:07.108> we<00:02:07.253> are<00:02:07.493> all<00:02:07.734> learning<00:02:08.134> a<00:02:08.150> lot.

00:02:09.513 --> 00:02:14.514
I<00:02:09.673> have<00:02:09.818> focused<00:02:10.795> my<00:02:11.116> early<00:02:11.421> career<00:02:12.142> really<00:02:12.543> on<00:02:12.719> the<00:02:13.104> supply<00:02:13.617> side<00:02:13.937> of<00:02:14.066> the<00:02:14.162> business.

00:02:14.562 --> 00:02:19.179
So<00:02:15.107> it<00:02:15.188> was<00:02:15.444> hosts<00:02:16.069> at<00:02:16.246> Airbnb<00:02:17.512> and<00:02:17.608> couriers<00:02:18.394> at<00:02:18.554> Uber<00:02:18.955> Eats.

00:02:19.756 --> 00:02:23.619
And<00:02:19.997> so<00:02:20.333> I<00:02:20.494> definitely<00:02:20.975> have<00:02:21.151> a<00:02:21.215> soft<00:02:21.552> spot<00:02:21.936> for<00:02:22.081> taskers<00:02:22.722> at<00:02:22.882> TaskRabbit.

00:02:24.277 --> 00:02:27.114
But<00:02:24.421> really<00:02:24.742> what<00:02:24.966> I<00:02:25.062> have<00:02:25.383> learned<00:02:26.184> is<00:02:26.329> a<00:02:26.345> couple<00:02:26.585> of<00:02:26.665> things.

00:02:27.306 --> 00:02:33.799
One,<00:02:28.188> marketplaces<00:02:28.990> are<00:02:29.214> really<00:02:29.487> super<00:02:30.833> challenge<00:02:31.314> or<00:02:31.474> pose<00:02:31.875> really<00:02:32.115> challenging<00:02:32.677> problems<00:02:33.077> to<00:02:33.238> solve.

00:02:34.744 --> 00:02:41.782
And<00:02:34.937> so<00:02:35.642> we've<00:02:35.786> been<00:02:35.947> doing<00:02:36.203> a<00:02:36.363> lot<00:02:36.668> of<00:02:36.925> things<00:02:37.405> thinking<00:02:37.726> about<00:02:38.047> how<00:02:38.367> to<00:02:38.528> drive<00:02:38.928> both<00:02:39.185> sides<00:02:39.730> of<00:02:39.874> the<00:02:40.195> marketplace<00:02:40.692> simultaneously.

00:02:42.295 --> 00:02:52.875
So<00:02:42.840> it's,<00:02:43.240> it's<00:02:44.042> different<00:02:44.459> than<00:02:44.699> maybe<00:02:45.084> traditional<00:02:45.661> business<00:02:45.982> models<00:02:46.607> in<00:02:46.703> which<00:02:46.943> you<00:02:47.088> can<00:02:47.745> focus<00:02:48.290> on<00:02:48.546> driving<00:02:48.947> the<00:02:49.091> customers<00:02:49.813> or<00:02:50.133> driving<00:02:50.486> your<00:02:50.694> inventory<00:02:51.576> and<00:02:52.009> something<00:02:52.538> else.

00:02:53.275 --> 00:02:55.247
This<00:02:53.580> is<00:02:54.397> real<00:02:54.798> time.

00:02:55.295 --> 00:03:05.992
So,<00:02:55.984> you<00:02:56.065> know,<00:02:56.241> if<00:02:56.401> we're<00:02:56.561> trying<00:02:56.962> to<00:02:57.139> send<00:02:57.828> or<00:02:57.908> find<00:02:58.245> new<00:02:58.405> customers<00:02:58.966> in<00:02:59.062> Seattle<00:03:00.168> that<00:03:00.409> really<00:03:00.665> need<00:03:01.034> cleaning,<00:03:01.531> we<00:03:01.755> better<00:03:01.932> have<00:03:02.156> a<00:03:02.172> lot<00:03:02.574> of<00:03:02.718> Taskers<00:03:03.376> in<00:03:03.456> Seattle<00:03:04.483> who<00:03:04.580> can<00:03:04.740> provide<00:03:05.206> those<00:03:05.382> services.

00:03:06.891 --> 00:03:12.299
And<00:03:07.067> so<00:03:07.372> in<00:03:07.420> a<00:03:07.469> marketplace,<00:03:08.014> you<00:03:08.111> really<00:03:08.415> can't<00:03:08.817> look<00:03:09.057> at<00:03:10.101> averages<00:03:10.598> and<00:03:10.743> totals<00:03:11.176> or<00:03:11.401> things<00:03:11.641> in<00:03:11.866> aggregate.

00:03:12.428 --> 00:03:25.941
You<00:03:12.524> really<00:03:12.829> have<00:03:13.006> to<00:03:13.166> go<00:03:13.407> down<00:03:13.648> to<00:03:13.808> the<00:03:13.968> local<00:03:14.370> level,<00:03:15.092> especially<00:03:15.798> when<00:03:15.975> it<00:03:16.296> comes<00:03:16.777> to<00:03:17.820> the<00:03:17.917> type<00:03:18.157> of<00:03:18.222> platform<00:03:18.783> that<00:03:19.088> we<00:03:19.281> serve,<00:03:19.746> because<00:03:20.067> it<00:03:20.147> really<00:03:20.549> is<00:03:20.693> important<00:03:21.191> whether<00:03:21.496> in<00:03:21.592> that<00:03:21.897> neighborhood<00:03:22.378> at<00:03:22.491> that<00:03:22.715> time<00:03:23.036> for<00:03:23.181> that<00:03:23.438> price,<00:03:24.240> we<00:03:24.320> have<00:03:24.481> someone<00:03:24.882> who<00:03:25.042> can<00:03:25.267> help<00:03:25.508> you<00:03:25.749> out.

00:03:26.407 --> 00:03:31.029
So<00:03:26.647> we've<00:03:26.808> been<00:03:26.904> spending<00:03:27.273> a<00:03:27.289> lot<00:03:27.610> of<00:03:27.691> time<00:03:28.397> really<00:03:28.894> thinking<00:03:29.279> about<00:03:29.456> how<00:03:29.697> we<00:03:30.002> optimize<00:03:30.579> the<00:03:30.676> match.

00:03:31.446 --> 00:03:33.033
Between<00:03:31.766> the<00:03:31.847> client<00:03:32.263> and<00:03:32.344> the<00:03:32.504> tasker.

00:03:33.466 --> 00:03:36.640
And<00:03:33.610> really<00:03:33.931> that<00:03:34.107> comes<00:03:34.427> from<00:03:34.588> my<00:03:34.732> work<00:03:34.988> at<00:03:35.213> Airbnb<00:03:35.790> and<00:03:35.934> at<00:03:36.030> Uber<00:03:36.271> Eats.

00:03:38.034 --> 00:03:38.724
You<00:03:38.098> know<00:03:38.178> what's<00:03:38.355> interesting?

00:03:38.788 --> 00:03:44.927
Like,<00:03:38.980> I<00:03:39.076> imagine<00:03:39.461> like<00:03:39.621> that<00:03:39.942> you<00:03:40.102> have<00:03:40.262> just<00:03:40.503> an<00:03:40.695> incredible<00:03:41.176> amount<00:03:41.401> of<00:03:41.481> data,<00:03:41.946> again,<00:03:42.202> TaskRabbit<00:03:42.923> being<00:03:43.164> so<00:03:43.388> popular.

00:03:45.152 --> 00:03:55.475
How<00:03:45.344> are<00:03:45.552> you<00:03:45.649> thinking<00:03:46.145> about<00:03:46.610> the<00:03:46.691> future<00:03:47.171> of<00:03:47.316> AI,<00:03:47.957> integrating<00:03:48.518> AI<00:03:48.919> into<00:03:49.079> your<00:03:49.335> company,<00:03:50.955> somehow<00:03:51.419> using<00:03:51.740> that<00:03:51.900> data<00:03:52.141> for<00:03:52.862> an<00:03:53.006> even<00:03:53.263> better<00:03:53.728> customer<00:03:54.209> experience<00:03:54.690> than<00:03:54.786> even<00:03:55.026> currently?

00:03:56.629 --> 00:04:09.101
So,<00:03:57.815> obviously<00:03:58.232> we've<00:03:58.617> been<00:03:58.777> using<00:03:59.194> large<00:03:59.499> language<00:03:59.835> models<00:04:00.220> for<00:04:00.380> quite<00:04:00.621> some<00:04:00.797> time<00:04:01.342> because<00:04:01.823> really<00:04:02.095> it's<00:04:02.624> the<00:04:02.721> foundation<00:04:03.586> core<00:04:04.067> of,<00:04:04.644> of<00:04:04.789> how<00:04:05.045> we<00:04:05.205> think<00:04:05.462> about<00:04:06.648> that<00:04:06.905> match<00:04:07.369> between<00:04:07.834> the<00:04:07.930> client<00:04:08.475> and<00:04:08.556> the<00:04:08.716> tasker.

00:04:09.149 --> 00:04:24.185
So<00:04:09.437> it<00:04:09.598> is<00:04:09.854> an<00:04:09.934> immense<00:04:10.319> amount<00:04:10.559> of<00:04:10.656> data<00:04:11.040> and<00:04:11.136> we<00:04:11.281> have<00:04:11.537> to<00:04:11.633> be<00:04:11.922> able<00:04:12.243> to<00:04:12.499> really<00:04:12.980> think<00:04:13.236> through<00:04:14.246> and<00:04:14.423> provide<00:04:16.010> the<00:04:16.250> best<00:04:16.587> opportunity<00:04:17.372> for<00:04:17.789> any<00:04:18.094> client<00:04:18.591> to<00:04:18.735> find<00:04:19.071> the<00:04:19.232> best<00:04:19.472> tasker<00:04:20.194> or<00:04:20.354> to<00:04:20.578> have<00:04:21.059> their<00:04:21.300> job<00:04:21.700> done<00:04:22.037> by<00:04:22.197> someone<00:04:22.662> who<00:04:22.838> is<00:04:23.015> most<00:04:23.384> qualified.

00:04:24.554 --> 00:04:26.590
Quality<00:04:25.067> is<00:04:25.323> really<00:04:25.548> important<00:04:26.125> to<00:04:26.349> us.

00:04:26.750 --> 00:04:33.643
And<00:04:26.846> so<00:04:27.712> really<00:04:28.834> using<00:04:29.395> AI<00:04:30.052> to<00:04:30.293> find<00:04:30.597> that<00:04:30.854> match<00:04:31.479> is<00:04:32.056> core<00:04:32.457> to<00:04:32.617> what<00:04:32.841> we're<00:04:32.937> trying<00:04:33.402> to<00:04:33.499> do.

00:04:33.803 --> 00:04:35.599
And<00:04:33.899> that's<00:04:34.140> going<00:04:34.316> to<00:04:34.444> continue<00:04:34.941> to<00:04:35.070> advance.

00:04:35.983 --> 00:04:47.028
And<00:04:36.128> so<00:04:36.208> it's<00:04:36.448> everything<00:04:37.025> but<00:04:38.308> just<00:04:38.628> getting<00:04:38.949> more<00:04:39.189> information<00:04:39.991> from<00:04:40.215> the<00:04:40.312> client<00:04:40.792> about<00:04:41.033> the<00:04:41.177> type<00:04:41.434> of<00:04:41.578> job<00:04:41.818> that<00:04:41.995> they<00:04:42.091> need<00:04:42.636> done<00:04:42.876> with,<00:04:43.357> you<00:04:43.502> know,<00:04:43.662> how<00:04:43.983> big<00:04:44.223> is<00:04:44.383> the<00:04:44.480> TV<00:04:45.025> or<00:04:45.185> what<00:04:45.345> kind<00:04:45.586> of<00:04:45.682> wall<00:04:45.922> are<00:04:46.083> you<00:04:46.243> putting<00:04:46.628> it<00:04:46.724> on?

00:04:47.445 --> 00:05:06.561
And<00:04:47.830> using<00:04:48.231> that<00:04:48.471> data<00:04:48.952> to<00:04:49.112> find<00:04:49.449> Taskers<00:04:49.946> that<00:04:50.090> have<00:04:50.331> most<00:04:50.635> experience<00:04:51.277> with<00:04:51.453> specifically<00:04:52.399> that<00:04:52.575> kind<00:04:52.896> of<00:04:52.992> a<00:04:53.056> job<00:04:53.938> is<00:04:54.178> really,<00:04:55.685> you<00:04:55.717> know,<00:04:56.262> it's<00:04:56.663> quite<00:04:56.903> revolutionary<00:04:57.705> because<00:04:58.426> it<00:04:58.587> really<00:04:59.805> makes<00:05:00.190> it<00:05:00.286> so<00:05:00.590> that<00:05:01.938> the<00:05:02.034> job<00:05:02.596> is<00:05:02.757> much<00:05:02.981> higher<00:05:03.383> quality<00:05:04.041> than<00:05:04.747> otherwise<00:05:05.245> we<00:05:05.389> could<00:05:05.566> have<00:05:05.742> done<00:05:05.855> on<00:05:05.951> our<00:05:06.352> own.

00:05:06.946 --> 00:05:11.602
So<00:05:07.107> that's<00:05:07.412> sort<00:05:07.637> of<00:05:07.669> the<00:05:07.797> first<00:05:08.054> thing,<00:05:08.279> and<00:05:08.375> it's<00:05:08.536> really<00:05:08.776> the<00:05:08.937> core<00:05:09.563> of<00:05:09.595> our<00:05:09.740> platform<00:05:10.398> and<00:05:10.606> really<00:05:10.863> what<00:05:11.008> we're<00:05:11.168> working<00:05:11.570> on.

00:05:11.666 --> 00:05:53.482
But<00:05:11.762> of<00:05:11.907> course,<00:05:12.147> there's<00:05:12.388> a<00:05:12.452> lot<00:05:12.645> of<00:05:12.854> other<00:05:13.095> opportunities,<00:05:14.555> especially<00:05:15.037> when<00:05:15.197> it<00:05:15.278> comes<00:05:15.583> to<00:05:15.663> driving<00:05:16.000> efficiencies,<00:05:16.706> and<00:05:16.803> that's<00:05:17.589> everywhere<00:05:18.472> across<00:05:19.756> the<00:05:19.853> business,<00:05:20.318> whether<00:05:20.575> it's<00:05:21.217> within<00:05:21.538> customer<00:05:21.940> service<00:05:22.646> and<00:05:22.806> how<00:05:23.047> we<00:05:23.143> can<00:05:23.384> really<00:05:23.625> serve<00:05:23.882> our<00:05:24.091> customers<00:05:24.572> better<00:05:24.893> by<00:05:25.535> having—<00:05:26.193> by<00:05:26.354> providing<00:05:26.916> more<00:05:27.141> information,<00:05:27.943> by<00:05:28.120> having<00:05:28.858> more<00:05:29.146> information<00:05:29.708> available<00:05:30.285> at<00:05:30.445> our<00:05:30.541> fingertips<00:05:31.631> to<00:05:31.808> really<00:05:32.128> ensuring<00:05:32.609> that<00:05:33.411> the<00:05:33.715> agents<00:05:34.036> that<00:05:34.196> are<00:05:34.373> working<00:05:34.709> through<00:05:34.854> that<00:05:35.318> are<00:05:36.457> being<00:05:36.761> able<00:05:36.938> to<00:05:37.162> leverage<00:05:37.499> information<00:05:38.060> in<00:05:38.156> a<00:05:38.220> much<00:05:38.460> quicker<00:05:38.845> way<00:05:39.903> and<00:05:40.048> are<00:05:40.609> much<00:05:41.506> more<00:05:42.629> sort<00:05:43.029> of<00:05:43.174> equipped<00:05:43.815> to<00:05:44.055> answer<00:05:44.456> questions<00:05:45.498> all<00:05:45.594> the<00:05:45.674> way<00:05:45.915> through<00:05:46.236> to<00:05:46.380> how<00:05:46.556> we<00:05:46.716> think<00:05:46.893> about<00:05:47.181> using<00:05:47.582> AI<00:05:47.903> within<00:05:48.223> marketing<00:05:48.784> and<00:05:48.881> storytelling,<00:05:50.307> how<00:05:50.468> we<00:05:50.628> think<00:05:50.804> about<00:05:51.125> using<00:05:51.510> it<00:05:51.606> within<00:05:51.910> our<00:05:52.087> engineering<00:05:52.792> organization.

00:05:53.850 --> 00:06:02.795
And<00:05:54.075> really,<00:05:54.812> there<00:05:55.053> isn't<00:05:55.453> a<00:05:55.517> space<00:05:56.095> where<00:05:56.319> we<00:05:56.415> don't<00:05:56.800> feel<00:05:57.137> that<00:05:57.377> this<00:05:57.618> is<00:05:57.778> technology<00:05:58.499> that's<00:05:58.724> going<00:05:58.964> to<00:05:59.140> really<00:05:59.766> helped<00:06:00.086> to<00:06:00.744> pivot<00:06:01.128> us<00:06:01.385> in<00:06:01.529> a<00:06:01.545> much<00:06:01.850> faster<00:06:02.266> direction.

00:06:04.190 --> 00:06:08.582
How<00:06:04.238> have<00:06:04.414> you<00:06:04.575> thought<00:06:04.735> about<00:06:05.136> like<00:06:05.456> hybrid<00:06:05.873> work<00:06:06.258> versus<00:06:06.578> remote<00:06:06.979> work<00:06:07.300> versus<00:06:07.636> everybody<00:06:08.037> in<00:06:08.182> office?

00:06:08.662 --> 00:06:14.578
As<00:06:08.823> every<00:06:09.079> CEO<00:06:09.720> and<00:06:09.881> leader<00:06:10.105> has<00:06:10.281> been<00:06:10.923> kind<00:06:11.083> of<00:06:11.243> dealing<00:06:11.644> with<00:06:11.708> and<00:06:11.804> addressing<00:06:12.269> with<00:06:12.429> this<00:06:12.670> issue,<00:06:13.071> where<00:06:13.183> did<00:06:13.471> you<00:06:13.648> land<00:06:13.968> on<00:06:14.129> all<00:06:14.289> of<00:06:14.449> that?

00:06:15.988 --> 00:06:20.942
So,<00:06:17.735> I<00:06:17.896> wasn't<00:06:18.281> here<00:06:18.601> right<00:06:18.858> when<00:06:19.082> COVID<00:06:19.483> hit<00:06:19.884> in<00:06:19.980> March<00:06:20.284> 2020.

00:06:21.086 --> 00:06:24.548
I<00:06:21.118> was<00:06:21.262> at<00:06:21.406> Uber<00:06:21.727> Eats<00:06:21.967> and<00:06:22.785> that<00:06:22.961> was<00:06:23.106> crazy<00:06:23.426> time<00:06:23.731> in<00:06:23.891> and<00:06:23.987> of<00:06:24.067> itself.

00:06:24.612 --> 00:06:26.167
And<00:06:24.773> I<00:06:24.869> know<00:06:25.125> it<00:06:25.173> was<00:06:25.414> crazy<00:06:25.815> here<00:06:25.991> too.

00:06:27.498 --> 00:06:34.089
By<00:06:27.674> the<00:06:27.738> time<00:06:27.979> I<00:06:28.155> joined<00:06:28.476> in<00:06:28.700> August<00:06:28.957> of<00:06:29.101> 2020,<00:06:30.864> the<00:06:31.185> offices<00:06:31.762> were—<00:06:32.308> or<00:06:32.709> everyone<00:06:33.110> was<00:06:33.271> working<00:06:33.608> remotely.

00:06:34.651 --> 00:06:38.904
And<00:06:34.795> so<00:06:34.956> we<00:06:35.068> made<00:06:35.293> the<00:06:35.373> conscious<00:06:35.854> decision<00:06:36.256> to<00:06:36.416> close<00:06:36.753> our<00:06:36.882> offices<00:06:37.459> and<00:06:37.540> start<00:06:37.844> hiring<00:06:38.406> remotely.

00:06:39.144 --> 00:06:45.259
It<00:06:39.209> was<00:06:39.401> a<00:06:39.530> really<00:06:40.733> also<00:06:40.910> challenging<00:06:41.552> hiring<00:06:42.033> environment,<00:06:42.835> especially<00:06:43.333> as<00:06:43.477> we<00:06:43.558> got<00:06:43.718> into<00:06:43.959> '21<00:06:44.456> and<00:06:44.601> '22.

00:06:45.869 --> 00:06:53.556
And<00:06:45.965> we<00:06:46.125> felt<00:06:46.446> that<00:06:46.607> we<00:06:46.832> would<00:06:46.992> have<00:06:47.313> access<00:06:47.794> to<00:06:48.035> much<00:06:48.212> broader<00:06:48.533> talent,<00:06:49.881> not<00:06:50.137> just<00:06:50.458> being<00:06:51.502> sort<00:06:51.742> of<00:06:51.983> forced<00:06:52.561> into<00:06:52.930> one<00:06:53.187> city.

00:06:54.294 --> 00:07:13.854
That<00:06:54.567> said,<00:06:55.177> over<00:06:55.417> the<00:06:55.450> last<00:06:55.819> 4<00:06:55.899> or<00:06:55.995> 5<00:06:56.300> years,<00:06:56.637> we've<00:06:56.942> also<00:06:57.263> realized<00:06:57.921> that<00:06:58.980> spending<00:06:59.510> time<00:06:59.847> together<00:07:00.489> in<00:07:00.649> person<00:07:01.612> leads<00:07:02.076> to<00:07:02.878> ability<00:07:04.015> for<00:07:04.336> teams<00:07:04.961> in<00:07:05.057> particular<00:07:05.682> to<00:07:05.842> collaborate<00:07:07.284> that<00:07:07.461> I<00:07:07.621> think<00:07:07.877> is<00:07:08.101> really<00:07:08.486> hard<00:07:08.887> to<00:07:09.047> replicate<00:07:09.688> online<00:07:10.585> or<00:07:10.729> really<00:07:10.986> hard<00:07:11.306> to<00:07:11.467> do<00:07:11.707> over<00:07:11.947> Google<00:07:12.204> Meet<00:07:12.524> or<00:07:12.668> Zoom<00:07:13.149> or<00:07:13.293> what<00:07:13.453> have<00:07:13.710> you.

00:07:13.934 --> 00:07:17.075
And<00:07:14.046> so<00:07:14.671> we<00:07:14.816> have<00:07:15.136> been<00:07:15.296> spending<00:07:15.793> much<00:07:16.097> more<00:07:16.274> time<00:07:16.514> together.

00:07:17.860 --> 00:07:22.972
Right<00:07:18.036> now,<00:07:18.854> it's<00:07:18.998> getting<00:07:19.318> together<00:07:19.943> in<00:07:20.119> this<00:07:20.280> sort<00:07:20.520> of<00:07:20.744> rented<00:07:21.081> spaces<00:07:21.786> for<00:07:21.882> short<00:07:22.203> amount<00:07:22.459> of<00:07:22.523> time.

00:07:23.404 --> 00:07:27.875
And<00:07:23.484> we're<00:07:23.645> definitely<00:07:24.190> looking<00:07:24.510> and<00:07:24.670> thinking<00:07:24.927> about<00:07:25.311> how<00:07:25.648> we<00:07:25.792> can<00:07:26.513> continue<00:07:26.930> to<00:07:27.074> expand<00:07:27.555> on<00:07:27.651> that.

00:07:28.292 --> 00:07:44.954
Well,<00:07:28.533> I<00:07:28.693> know<00:07:29.191> just<00:07:29.496> by<00:07:29.656> working<00:07:29.977> with<00:07:30.122> my<00:07:30.298> own<00:07:30.459> team,<00:07:30.700> and<00:07:30.796> I<00:07:30.876> meet<00:07:31.085> with<00:07:31.181> them<00:07:31.342> in<00:07:31.502> person<00:07:31.727> quite<00:07:31.984> frequently,<00:07:33.188> that<00:07:33.653> when<00:07:33.830> we<00:07:33.990> spend<00:07:34.472> time<00:07:35.114> in<00:07:35.259> those<00:07:35.499> sessions<00:07:36.061> where<00:07:36.222> we<00:07:36.382> have<00:07:36.703> more<00:07:36.880> time<00:07:37.265> to<00:07:37.426> dig<00:07:37.618> deeper<00:07:38.084> into<00:07:38.822> some<00:07:39.207> thoughts<00:07:39.753> or<00:07:39.850> ideas<00:07:40.716> or<00:07:40.973> plans<00:07:41.455> that<00:07:41.615> we<00:07:41.840> have,<00:07:42.578> we<00:07:42.659> come<00:07:42.900> out<00:07:43.140> much<00:07:43.365> stronger<00:07:43.943> and<00:07:44.023> better<00:07:44.328> on<00:07:44.489> the<00:07:44.569> other<00:07:44.746> side.

00:07:45.211 --> 00:07:48.967
And<00:07:45.323> so,<00:07:45.612> I<00:07:45.773> want<00:07:45.949> to<00:07:46.110> replicate<00:07:46.527> that<00:07:46.672> for<00:07:46.832> other<00:07:47.073> teams<00:07:47.378> as<00:07:47.555> well<00:07:47.779> within<00:07:48.117> the<00:07:48.197> organization.

00:07:50.444 --> 00:07:53.590
How<00:07:50.540> do<00:07:50.669> you<00:07:51.664> think<00:07:52.065> about<00:07:52.756> leadership<00:07:53.494> now?

00:07:54.040 --> 00:08:01.326
Like<00:07:54.200> given<00:07:54.602> like,<00:07:54.923> you<00:07:55.180> know,<00:07:55.340> the<00:07:55.485> various<00:07:55.806> places<00:07:56.143> you've<00:07:56.303> been<00:07:56.721> and<00:07:57.106> now<00:07:57.347> being<00:07:57.571> CEO<00:07:57.973> of<00:07:58.069> TaskRabbit,<00:07:59.360> What<00:07:59.847> defines<00:08:00.351> a<00:08:00.416> good<00:08:00.660> leader<00:08:00.968> for<00:08:01.212> you?

00:08:01.700 --> 00:08:05.535
What<00:08:01.960> have<00:08:02.187> you<00:08:02.447> learned<00:08:03.325> and<00:08:04.137> have<00:08:04.478> seen<00:08:04.722> that's<00:08:04.950> working<00:08:05.275> well<00:08:05.388> now?

00:08:07.880 --> 00:08:14.439
So,<00:08:08.073> I<00:08:08.234> think<00:08:09.765> maybe<00:08:10.313> for<00:08:10.410> some<00:08:10.652> people,<00:08:11.683> it's<00:08:11.844> a<00:08:11.861> very<00:08:12.183> natural<00:08:12.666> talent<00:08:13.392> to<00:08:13.633> be<00:08:13.859> a<00:08:14.020> leader.

00:08:14.665 --> 00:08:17.280
I<00:08:14.762> certainly<00:08:15.326> don't<00:08:15.809> think<00:08:16.100> that's<00:08:17.005> me.

00:08:17.571 --> 00:08:20.789
And<00:08:17.991> there's<00:08:18.234> a<00:08:18.379> lot<00:08:18.638> that<00:08:18.784> we<00:08:18.945> can<00:08:19.188> learn<00:08:19.592> to<00:08:19.689> become<00:08:20.013> better<00:08:20.336> leaders.

00:08:21.613 --> 00:08:25.494
And<00:08:22.195> I<00:08:22.341> think<00:08:22.858> for<00:08:23.052> me,<00:08:23.327> there's<00:08:23.634> really<00:08:23.893> few<00:08:24.217> things<00:08:24.766> that<00:08:24.944> stand<00:08:25.413> out.

00:08:26.036 --> 00:08:42.771
One<00:08:26.437> is<00:08:27.879> for<00:08:28.200> any<00:08:28.457> leader<00:08:28.857> in<00:08:28.937> a<00:08:29.082> tech<00:08:29.258> company,<00:08:29.643> but<00:08:29.803> really<00:08:30.204> any<00:08:30.444> company,<00:08:30.925> you<00:08:31.085> have<00:08:31.422> to<00:08:31.518> spend<00:08:32.047> a<00:08:32.143> lot<00:08:32.400> of<00:08:32.480> time<00:08:32.705> with<00:08:32.849> the<00:08:32.929> customers<00:08:34.067> and<00:08:34.308> really<00:08:34.772> listening<00:08:35.189> to<00:08:35.349> the<00:08:35.494> challenges<00:08:35.975> that<00:08:36.087> they<00:08:36.231> have<00:08:36.632> and<00:08:36.792> really<00:08:37.177> understanding<00:08:38.299> what<00:08:38.539> is<00:08:38.716> it<00:08:38.860> that<00:08:39.117> we<00:08:39.341> can<00:08:39.662> do<00:08:40.479> to<00:08:40.944> try<00:08:41.201> to<00:08:41.297> solve<00:08:41.681> some<00:08:41.922> of<00:08:42.002> those<00:08:42.226> challenges.

00:08:42.868 --> 00:08:56.782
But<00:08:43.028> it's<00:08:43.429> very<00:08:43.829> easy<00:08:44.166> to<00:08:44.262> start<00:08:44.583> sort<00:08:44.887> of<00:08:46.074> falling<00:08:46.490> into<00:08:46.795> the<00:08:46.875> solutions<00:08:48.077> trap<00:08:48.879> and<00:08:49.055> really<00:08:49.921> learning<00:08:50.322> how<00:08:50.562> to<00:08:50.738> learn,<00:08:51.203> learning<00:08:51.524> how<00:08:51.620> to<00:08:51.780> listen,<00:08:52.406> and<00:08:52.582> learning<00:08:52.967> how<00:08:53.143> to<00:08:53.367> just<00:08:53.768> understand<00:08:54.345> the<00:08:54.570> problem,<00:08:55.467> I<00:08:55.612> think<00:08:55.804> is<00:08:56.012> really<00:08:56.205> important.

00:08:56.830 --> 00:09:02.793
And<00:08:56.990> as<00:08:57.215> leaders,<00:08:57.680> we<00:08:57.856> often<00:08:58.176> tend<00:08:58.417> to<00:08:59.010> start<00:08:59.395> to<00:08:59.635> find<00:09:00.036> solutions,<00:09:00.661> like<00:09:00.918> naturally,<00:09:01.479> that<00:09:01.719> is<00:09:01.863> something<00:09:02.200> that<00:09:02.424> I<00:09:02.665> do.

00:09:03.947 --> 00:09:10.375
And<00:09:04.059> so,<00:09:04.605> I've<00:09:04.909> tried<00:09:05.246> really<00:09:05.566> hard<00:09:06.127> to<00:09:06.352> instead<00:09:06.993> spend<00:09:07.249> majority<00:09:07.730> of<00:09:07.811> my<00:09:07.971> time<00:09:08.291> listening<00:09:08.917> and<00:09:09.077> understanding<00:09:09.718> the<00:09:09.878> problem.

00:09:10.936 --> 00:09:14.784
I<00:09:11.017> think<00:09:11.177> it's<00:09:11.337> really<00:09:11.642> important<00:09:12.283> also<00:09:12.539> to<00:09:12.700> be<00:09:12.796> smart<00:09:13.501> in<00:09:13.581> the<00:09:13.742> risks<00:09:14.078> that<00:09:14.287> you<00:09:14.383> take.

00:09:15.569 --> 00:09:33.268
You<00:09:15.601> know,<00:09:15.810> one<00:09:15.970> of<00:09:16.467> our<00:09:17.252> core<00:09:17.413> values<00:09:17.845> is<00:09:17.990> to<00:09:18.150> be<00:09:18.310> bold,<00:09:18.935> and<00:09:19.689> it's<00:09:19.913> really<00:09:20.234> important<00:09:20.875> to<00:09:21.100> be<00:09:21.340> able<00:09:21.596> to<00:09:21.757> have<00:09:21.997> some<00:09:22.302> sort<00:09:22.542> of<00:09:22.622> a<00:09:22.654> mix<00:09:23.280> of<00:09:23.520> risk<00:09:24.466> that<00:09:24.642> you're<00:09:24.883> willing<00:09:25.428> to,<00:09:25.828> depending<00:09:26.245> on<00:09:26.309> the<00:09:26.406> stage<00:09:26.726> of<00:09:26.790> the<00:09:26.870> company<00:09:27.271> that<00:09:27.447> you're<00:09:27.912> in,<00:09:28.473> that<00:09:28.554> you're<00:09:28.714> willing<00:09:28.970> to<00:09:29.131> take<00:09:29.612> and<00:09:29.773> it<00:09:29.853> might<00:09:30.111> not<00:09:30.417> pay<00:09:30.723> off,<00:09:31.303> and<00:09:31.464> sometimes<00:09:31.931> that<00:09:32.108> becomes<00:09:32.495> very<00:09:32.737> expensive.

00:09:33.719 --> 00:09:51.433
But<00:09:35.717> I<00:09:35.894> strongly<00:09:36.377> believe<00:09:36.780> that<00:09:36.941> if<00:09:37.102> we're<00:09:37.215> not<00:09:37.521> taking<00:09:38.052> very<00:09:38.230> many<00:09:38.777> risks,<00:09:39.437> we<00:09:39.662> really<00:09:40.064> risk,<00:09:40.869> you<00:09:40.901> know,<00:09:41.126> very<00:09:41.384> slow<00:09:41.834> growth<00:09:42.478> and,<00:09:43.781> you<00:09:43.862> know,<00:09:44.167> very<00:09:44.602> sort<00:09:44.892> of<00:09:44.988> hard<00:09:45.390> way<00:09:45.712> to<00:09:45.937> push<00:09:46.179> yourself<00:09:46.742> outside<00:09:47.577> and<00:09:47.996> really<00:09:50.013> be<00:09:50.239> able<00:09:50.433> to<00:09:50.578> get<00:09:50.739> to<00:09:50.836> our<00:09:50.981> mission.

00:09:52.014 --> 00:09:56.806
And<00:09:52.175> so,<00:09:52.982> be<00:09:53.224> able<00:09:53.482> to<00:09:53.627> take<00:09:54.773> calculated<00:09:55.418> risks<00:09:55.757> is<00:09:55.902> really<00:09:56.306> important.

00:09:57.233 --> 00:10:08.397
And<00:09:57.298> then<00:09:57.477> finally,<00:09:57.884> and<00:09:58.030> this<00:09:58.209> is<00:09:58.356> really<00:09:58.958> sort<00:09:59.202> of<00:09:59.267> personal<00:09:59.462> to<00:09:59.494> me,<00:10:00.863> Finding<00:10:01.344> the<00:10:01.488> right<00:10:01.808> team<00:10:02.626> and<00:10:02.706> being<00:10:03.011> able<00:10:03.267> to<00:10:03.652> identify<00:10:04.469> the<00:10:04.550> right<00:10:04.806> leaders<00:10:06.698> around<00:10:07.098> me<00:10:07.419> has<00:10:07.659> been<00:10:07.836> critical.

00:10:08.477 --> 00:10:18.448
So<00:10:09.102> people<00:10:09.423> who<00:10:09.583> are<00:10:09.823> willing<00:10:10.144> to<00:10:10.240> be<00:10:10.545> honest<00:10:10.865> with<00:10:11.042> me,<00:10:11.587> who<00:10:12.148> are<00:10:12.404> willing<00:10:12.725> to<00:10:12.805> push<00:10:13.046> back<00:10:13.366> on<00:10:13.446> me,<00:10:13.671> who<00:10:13.751> are<00:10:13.927> willing<00:10:14.312> to<00:10:14.472> provide<00:10:14.905> that<00:10:15.194> really<00:10:15.450> critical<00:10:15.851> feedback<00:10:17.197> has<00:10:17.454> been<00:10:17.598> super<00:10:17.999> helpful.

00:10:18.736 --> 00:10:25.533
And<00:10:18.897> so<00:10:19.682> it<00:10:19.714> helps<00:10:20.099> us<00:10:20.243> to<00:10:20.403> think<00:10:20.596> about<00:10:20.820> how<00:10:21.125> we<00:10:21.301> operate<00:10:21.718> as<00:10:21.862> a<00:10:21.942> team<00:10:23.305> and<00:10:23.465> build<00:10:23.706> trust<00:10:24.667> amongst<00:10:25.004> each<00:10:25.212> other.

00:10:25.693 --> 00:10:33.412
And<00:10:25.789> I<00:10:25.934> think<00:10:26.190> that<00:10:26.367> is<00:10:26.575> critical<00:10:26.992> because<00:10:27.312> if<00:10:27.457> we<00:10:27.617> can't<00:10:27.954> do<00:10:28.114> that<00:10:28.290> within<00:10:28.579> our<00:10:28.691> senior<00:10:29.156> leadership<00:10:29.637> team,<00:10:29.877> it's<00:10:30.037> very<00:10:30.342> hard<00:10:30.583> to<00:10:30.679> expect<00:10:31.079> the<00:10:31.224> rest<00:10:31.480> of<00:10:31.576> the<00:10:31.721> organization<00:10:32.363> to<00:10:32.589> operate<00:10:32.928> that<00:10:33.090> way.

00:10:33.897 --> 00:10:38.949
So,<00:10:35.010> um,<00:10:35.575> really<00:10:35.995> building<00:10:36.398> the<00:10:36.544> right<00:10:36.818> team,<00:10:37.448> I<00:10:37.609> think,<00:10:37.770> is<00:10:37.996> really<00:10:38.255> important.

00:10:40.091 --> 00:10:42.766
What<00:10:40.188> does<00:10:40.352> a<00:10:40.433> typical<00:10:40.841> day<00:10:41.086> look<00:10:41.314> like<00:10:41.559> for<00:10:41.722> you<00:10:42.212> as<00:10:42.310> CEO?

00:10:44.863 --> 00:10:47.240
Oh,<00:10:45.329> you<00:10:45.425> know,<00:10:45.746> no<00:10:46.068> day<00:10:46.389> is<00:10:46.614> typical.

00:10:48.558 --> 00:10:59.838
I,<00:10:48.783> I<00:10:48.943> wish<00:10:49.200> that<00:10:49.441> there<00:10:49.682> were,<00:10:50.470> but<00:10:50.646> I<00:10:50.743> start<00:10:51.112> off<00:10:51.289> my<00:10:51.675> day,<00:10:52.398> um,<00:10:53.458> well,<00:10:53.538> I<00:10:53.683> don't<00:10:53.924> wish<00:10:54.165> that<00:10:54.310> they<00:10:54.423> were,<00:10:54.730> honestly,<00:10:55.150> because<00:10:55.700> I,<00:10:56.346> when<00:10:56.508> they're<00:10:56.605> not<00:10:56.928> typical,<00:10:57.559> I<00:10:57.801> end<00:10:57.963> up,<00:10:58.367> um,<00:10:58.771> learning<00:10:59.175> a<00:10:59.191> lot<00:10:59.450> more.

00:10:59.983 --> 00:11:14.778
And,<00:11:00.711> you<00:11:00.743> know,<00:11:00.808> honestly,<00:11:01.050> I<00:11:01.066> find<00:11:01.260> when<00:11:01.309> I'm<00:11:01.357> uncomfortable,<00:11:01.681> it's<00:11:01.875> not<00:11:02.020> that<00:11:04.102> fun<00:11:04.425> in<00:11:04.571> the<00:11:04.603> moment,<00:11:05.865> but<00:11:08.211> it<00:11:08.373> really<00:11:08.713> pushes<00:11:09.198> me<00:11:09.506> to,<00:11:10.881> I<00:11:11.123> think,<00:11:11.528> I<00:11:11.690> hope,<00:11:12.013> make<00:11:12.191> better<00:11:12.515> decisions<00:11:13.469> and<00:11:13.711> learn<00:11:14.051> along<00:11:14.374> the<00:11:14.520> way.

00:11:15.021 --> 00:11:23.842
And<00:11:15.183> so<00:11:15.991> I<00:11:16.153> really<00:11:16.557> do<00:11:16.735> start<00:11:17.106> my<00:11:17.365> day<00:11:19.224> by—<00:11:20.340> and<00:11:20.598> this<00:11:20.825> is<00:11:20.857> something<00:11:21.245> that<00:11:21.407> I've<00:11:21.633> been<00:11:21.892> only<00:11:22.134> trying<00:11:22.603> for<00:11:22.765> the<00:11:22.830> last<00:11:23.183> year<00:11:23.328> or<00:11:23.440> so.

00:11:24.373 --> 00:11:31.237
I<00:11:24.566> don't<00:11:25.016> know<00:11:25.176> if<00:11:25.337> you<00:11:25.434> know<00:11:25.594> Marshall<00:11:26.077> Goldsmith,<00:11:26.639> but<00:11:26.864> he's<00:11:27.363> one<00:11:27.523> of<00:11:27.684> these<00:11:28.407> coaches,<00:11:28.809> but<00:11:28.906> he<00:11:29.115> has<00:11:29.275> this<00:11:29.533> process<00:11:30.079> of<00:11:30.192> daily<00:11:30.899> questions.

00:11:31.996 --> 00:11:47.478
And<00:11:32.156> I<00:11:32.317> have<00:11:32.573> been<00:11:32.798> trying<00:11:33.198> a<00:11:33.214> lot<00:11:33.711> to<00:11:33.919> say,<00:11:34.320> hey,<00:11:34.576> can<00:11:34.881> I—<00:11:35.282> am<00:11:35.394> I<00:11:35.554> set<00:11:35.923> up<00:11:36.035> for<00:11:36.259> the<00:11:36.419> day<00:11:37.141> and<00:11:37.221> just<00:11:37.461> take<00:11:37.766> 5<00:11:38.327> minutes<00:11:38.807> every<00:11:39.144> day<00:11:39.545> to<00:11:39.929> just<00:11:40.186> write<00:11:40.426> down<00:11:40.731> the<00:11:40.827> key<00:11:41.147> things<00:11:41.452> that<00:11:41.516> I'm<00:11:41.708> going<00:11:41.949> to<00:11:42.093> try<00:11:42.269> to<00:11:42.349> accomplish<00:11:42.894> this<00:11:43.151> day<00:11:43.872> relative<00:11:44.352> to<00:11:44.497> my<00:11:44.673> week<00:11:44.913> goals<00:11:45.378> or<00:11:45.490> maybe<00:11:45.795> my<00:11:45.955> monthly<00:11:46.340> goals<00:11:46.596> or<00:11:46.676> whatever<00:11:47.077> they<00:11:47.221> may<00:11:47.397> be.

00:11:47.718 --> 00:11:55.379
But<00:11:48.215> so<00:11:48.664> just<00:11:48.840> so<00:11:49.000> that<00:11:49.160> I'm<00:11:49.385> not<00:11:49.721> as<00:11:49.946> reactive<00:11:50.603> and<00:11:50.763> have<00:11:50.923> some<00:11:51.244> time<00:11:51.660> and<00:11:51.885> room<00:11:52.125> in<00:11:52.205> my<00:11:52.366> schedule<00:11:52.927> to<00:11:53.167> really<00:11:53.568> think<00:11:53.792> proactively<00:11:54.513> about<00:11:54.754> long<00:11:55.090> term.

00:11:55.907 --> 00:11:58.183
So<00:11:57.254> I<00:11:57.334> do<00:11:57.478> a<00:11:57.494> little<00:11:57.799> bit<00:11:57.959> of<00:11:58.039> that.

00:11:58.295 --> 00:12:00.347
I<00:11:58.456> read<00:11:58.680> a<00:11:58.696> lot<00:11:58.952> of<00:11:59.017> news<00:11:59.417> first<00:11:59.658> thing<00:11:59.834> in<00:11:59.898> the<00:11:59.978> morning.

00:12:00.683 --> 00:12:01.805
I<00:12:00.779> try<00:12:01.020> to<00:12:01.420> work<00:12:01.725> out.

00:12:02.479 --> 00:12:05.095
I<00:12:02.768> try<00:12:02.944> to<00:12:03.041> see<00:12:03.265> my<00:12:03.426> kids<00:12:03.987> who<00:12:04.068> are<00:12:04.373> getting<00:12:04.694> out<00:12:04.774> the<00:12:04.886> door.

00:12:05.191 --> 00:12:12.621
They're<00:12:06.475> at<00:12:06.619> an<00:12:06.860> age<00:12:07.037> now<00:12:07.261> where<00:12:07.374> they<00:12:07.518> can<00:12:07.678> hopefully<00:12:08.080> sort<00:12:08.336> of<00:12:08.545> on<00:12:08.625> their<00:12:08.786> own<00:12:09.027> get<00:12:09.123> themselves<00:12:09.604> out<00:12:09.749> the<00:12:09.845> door,<00:12:10.150> but<00:12:10.310> it's<00:12:10.487> always<00:12:10.744> nice<00:12:10.952> to<00:12:11.049> spend<00:12:11.289> a<00:12:11.450> little<00:12:11.626> bit<00:12:11.835> of<00:12:12.011> time<00:12:12.316> with<00:12:12.477> them.

00:12:13.360 --> 00:12:16.569
And<00:12:13.456> then<00:12:13.616> the<00:12:13.777> day<00:12:14.098> itself<00:12:14.659> is<00:12:14.820> just<00:12:15.125> a<00:12:15.141> lot<00:12:15.317> of<00:12:15.462> context<00:12:15.879> switching,<00:12:16.425> right?

00:12:16.682 --> 00:12:28.300
So,<00:12:17.388> I<00:12:17.532> can<00:12:17.709> spend<00:12:18.896> a<00:12:18.928> lot<00:12:19.153> of<00:12:19.249> time<00:12:20.180> thinking<00:12:20.421> about<00:12:20.597> the<00:12:20.678> long-term<00:12:21.079> strategy,<00:12:21.721> but<00:12:21.865> also<00:12:22.523> looking<00:12:23.004> or<00:12:23.165> being<00:12:23.390> in<00:12:23.470> a<00:12:23.550> product<00:12:23.887> review<00:12:24.128> to<00:12:24.288> understand<00:12:25.251> what<00:12:25.412> are<00:12:25.444> some<00:12:25.668> of<00:12:25.749> the<00:12:25.893> new<00:12:26.054> products<00:12:26.519> that<00:12:26.776> we<00:12:26.936> are<00:12:27.273> shipping<00:12:27.963> out.

00:12:29.087 --> 00:12:41.653
I<00:12:29.183> spend<00:12:29.488> a<00:12:29.520> lot<00:12:29.809> of<00:12:29.905> time<00:12:30.387> with<00:12:31.013> some<00:12:31.269> of<00:12:31.350> our<00:12:31.510> partners,<00:12:32.152> of<00:12:32.297> course,<00:12:32.618> especially<00:12:33.115> IKEA,<00:12:34.303> and<00:12:34.784> a<00:12:34.800> lot<00:12:34.977> of<00:12:35.041> time<00:12:35.683> really<00:12:35.924> on<00:12:36.084> people<00:12:36.389> development<00:12:37.512> and<00:12:38.893> really<00:12:39.214> spending<00:12:39.615> time<00:12:39.856> with<00:12:40.000> our<00:12:40.096> customers<00:12:40.722> and<00:12:40.818> our<00:12:41.059> Taskers.

00:12:41.701 --> 00:12:47.463
So<00:12:42.423> I<00:12:42.584> often<00:12:42.905> meet<00:12:43.065> with<00:12:43.226> them<00:12:43.386> as<00:12:43.611> well<00:12:43.868> just<00:12:44.028> to<00:12:44.189> understand<00:12:44.750> what<00:12:44.911> they're<00:12:45.055> up<00:12:45.232> to<00:12:45.457> and<00:12:45.633> what's<00:12:45.858> working<00:12:46.195> for<00:12:46.436> them<00:12:46.676> and<00:12:46.901> what<00:12:47.077> isn't.

00:12:48.506 --> 00:12:52.951
What<00:12:48.602> is<00:12:48.747> that<00:12:48.923> partnership<00:12:49.388> with<00:12:49.549> IKEA<00:12:49.902> like,<00:12:50.672> and<00:12:51.090> what's<00:12:51.330> it<00:12:51.411> been<00:12:51.571> like<00:12:51.748> to<00:12:51.876> work<00:12:52.069> with<00:12:52.197> them<00:12:52.390> as<00:12:52.534> a<00:12:52.614> company?

00:12:54.043 --> 00:12:57.718
IKEA<00:12:55.359> is<00:12:55.503> a<00:12:55.567> fascinating,<00:12:56.562> fascinating<00:12:57.268> company.

00:12:58.392 --> 00:13:01.886
It's<00:12:58.536> been<00:12:58.696> around<00:12:59.257> obviously<00:12:59.658> for<00:13:00.780> now<00:13:01.181> 80<00:13:01.502> years.

00:13:02.399 --> 00:13:04.050
It's<00:13:02.544> actually<00:13:02.960> two<00:13:03.201> different<00:13:03.521> companies.

00:13:04.147 --> 00:13:06.647
It<00:13:04.483> has<00:13:04.724> a<00:13:04.884> very<00:13:05.205> complex<00:13:05.830> corporate<00:13:06.150> structure.

00:13:07.689 --> 00:13:09.661
It<00:13:07.833> is<00:13:08.154> also<00:13:08.571> owned<00:13:08.731> by<00:13:08.891> a<00:13:08.956> foundation.

00:13:10.238 --> 00:13:17.692
And<00:13:10.639> at<00:13:10.719> the<00:13:10.895> end<00:13:11.039> of<00:13:11.136> the<00:13:11.280> day,<00:13:12.017> majority<00:13:12.659> of<00:13:12.739> its<00:13:12.899> profits<00:13:13.540> either<00:13:13.925> are<00:13:14.021> returned<00:13:14.422> back<00:13:14.662> into<00:13:14.887> the<00:13:14.983> business<00:13:15.368> so<00:13:15.464> that<00:13:15.624> the<00:13:15.768> business<00:13:16.025> can<00:13:16.185> continue<00:13:16.586> to<00:13:16.746> grow<00:13:17.067> and<00:13:17.147> evolve.

00:13:17.788 --> 00:13:20.882
So<00:13:18.429> launch<00:13:18.734> new<00:13:18.910> products,<00:13:19.552> go<00:13:19.712> to<00:13:19.856> new<00:13:20.016> markets<00:13:20.353> and<00:13:20.449> so<00:13:20.754> on.

00:13:21.395 --> 00:13:28.913
But<00:13:21.619> really<00:13:22.261> a<00:13:22.437> large<00:13:22.677> chunk<00:13:22.934> of<00:13:23.062> it<00:13:23.303> also<00:13:23.623> goes<00:13:23.751> to<00:13:23.960> the<00:13:24.040> foundation,<00:13:24.665> which<00:13:25.178> is<00:13:25.322> really<00:13:25.563> focused<00:13:26.108> primarily<00:13:26.605> on<00:13:26.845> either<00:13:27.070> climate<00:13:27.406> change<00:13:27.727> initiatives<00:13:28.352> or<00:13:28.448> poverty.

00:13:29.009 --> 00:13:31.782
And<00:13:29.490> within<00:13:29.795> poverty,<00:13:30.228> specifically<00:13:30.997> around<00:13:31.317> children.

00:13:32.134 --> 00:13:46.170
And<00:13:32.294> so<00:13:32.535> it's<00:13:32.759> been<00:13:33.256> really<00:13:33.640> rewarding<00:13:34.217> to<00:13:34.361> work<00:13:34.554> for<00:13:34.698> a<00:13:34.842> company<00:13:35.259> that<00:13:35.595> is<00:13:35.723> so<00:13:36.220> very<00:13:36.541> focused<00:13:37.422> on<00:13:37.582> giving<00:13:37.886> back<00:13:38.159> to<00:13:38.287> its<00:13:38.447> communities<00:13:39.569> and<00:13:39.665> then<00:13:39.825> giving<00:13:40.146> back<00:13:40.546> to<00:13:41.331> many<00:13:41.812> of<00:13:41.972> our,<00:13:43.014> many<00:13:43.414> of<00:13:43.895> people<00:13:44.312> who<00:13:44.536> are,<00:13:45.017> who<00:13:45.097> are<00:13:45.337> less<00:13:45.593> privileged.

00:13:47.019 --> 00:13:55.864
They've<00:13:47.500> been<00:13:48.237> a<00:13:48.317> great<00:13:48.718> partner<00:13:49.198> in<00:13:49.343> many<00:13:49.519> ways,<00:13:49.903> but<00:13:50.224> obviously<00:13:50.641> in<00:13:50.801> some<00:13:51.041> sense<00:13:51.426> they're<00:13:51.602> also<00:13:51.906> a<00:13:52.002> very<00:13:52.323> big<00:13:52.547> company,<00:13:53.044> so<00:13:53.204> they<00:13:53.845> work<00:13:54.085> slightly<00:13:54.646> differently<00:13:55.271> than<00:13:55.447> we<00:13:55.688> do.

00:13:56.793 --> 00:14:10.884
And<00:13:56.905> so<00:13:57.434> trying<00:13:57.931> to<00:13:58.476> to<00:13:58.732> manage<00:13:59.373> that<00:13:59.694> and<00:13:59.854> navigate<00:14:00.415> that<00:14:00.640> process<00:14:01.554> sometimes<00:14:02.083> is<00:14:02.243> challenging,<00:14:02.980> but<00:14:03.285> it's<00:14:03.686> also<00:14:04.167> an<00:14:04.423> opportunity<00:14:05.145> to<00:14:05.930> understand,<00:14:07.453> you<00:14:07.485> know,<00:14:07.726> how<00:14:08.255> it's<00:14:08.832> super<00:14:09.233> profitable,<00:14:10.419> obviously.

00:14:11.541 --> 00:14:23.869
And<00:14:12.343> it's<00:14:13.160> sometimes<00:14:14.667> we<00:14:14.763> say<00:14:15.244> that<00:14:15.485> IKEA<00:14:16.206> is<00:14:17.425> sort<00:14:17.793> of<00:14:18.050> in<00:14:18.194> its<00:14:18.515> own<00:14:19.477> sphere,<00:14:20.134> just<00:14:20.615> one<00:14:20.839> of<00:14:20.935> a<00:14:21.016> kind,<00:14:21.561> like<00:14:21.817> it<00:14:21.961> doesn't<00:14:22.298> have<00:14:22.699> very<00:14:22.875> many<00:14:23.180> competitors.

00:14:24.223 --> 00:14:33.394
That<00:14:24.369> are<00:14:24.530> completely<00:14:25.176> vertically<00:14:25.741> integrated<00:14:26.483> and<00:14:26.790> international<00:14:27.840> and<00:14:28.017> really<00:14:28.421> so<00:14:28.808> focused<00:14:30.019> on<00:14:30.180> serving<00:14:30.600> the<00:14:30.681> many<00:14:30.923> people<00:14:31.795> and<00:14:31.892> starting<00:14:32.295> with<00:14:32.537> price<00:14:32.860> and<00:14:32.990> quality.

00:14:33.733 --> 00:14:36.254
It's<00:14:34.396> been<00:14:34.622> really<00:14:34.881> fascinating<00:14:35.527> to<00:14:35.673> learn<00:14:35.850> from<00:14:36.077> them.

00:14:37.386 --> 00:14:38.129
What<00:14:37.483> do<00:14:37.612> you<00:14:37.790> read?

00:14:38.501 --> 00:14:40.505
What<00:14:38.679> reading<00:14:39.002> recommendations<00:14:39.730> would<00:14:39.891> you<00:14:39.972> have<00:14:40.150> for<00:14:40.376> us?

00:14:42.430 --> 00:14:48.985
So<00:14:42.769> in<00:14:42.850> my<00:14:42.964> very<00:14:43.271> spare<00:14:43.660> time,<00:14:44.145> of<00:14:44.226> which<00:14:44.485> there<00:14:44.663> just<00:14:44.971> isn't<00:14:45.278> that<00:14:45.553> much,<00:14:46.978> I<00:14:47.236> both<00:14:47.706> enjoy<00:14:48.531> reading.

00:14:49.745 --> 00:15:01.836
I<00:14:49.891> would<00:14:50.069> say<00:14:50.781> reading<00:14:52.349> both<00:14:53.434> things<00:14:53.969> that<00:14:54.147> are<00:14:56.092> fiction<00:14:57.453> and<00:14:57.939> also<00:14:58.458> some<00:14:58.765> things<00:14:59.073> that<00:14:59.187> are<00:14:59.333> business-focused<00:15:00.143> because,<00:15:00.451> you<00:15:00.532> know,<00:15:00.775> you<00:15:00.840> just<00:15:01.290> never<00:15:01.675> know.

00:15:02.174 --> 00:15:15.850
So<00:15:03.122> right<00:15:03.363> now<00:15:03.990> I'm<00:15:05.293> reading<00:15:06.965> the—<00:15:07.849> I<00:15:07.945> don't<00:15:08.122> know<00:15:08.363> if<00:15:08.427> you<00:15:08.588> follow,<00:15:09.054> but<00:15:09.280> Nicholas<00:15:09.779> Kristof<00:15:11.067> is<00:15:11.550> a<00:15:12.130> reporter<00:15:12.613> at<00:15:12.693> The<00:15:12.774> New<00:15:12.838> York<00:15:13.080> Times,<00:15:13.418> and<00:15:13.563> I've<00:15:13.804> been<00:15:14.046> following<00:15:14.465> his<00:15:14.706> work<00:15:14.948> for<00:15:15.093> quite<00:15:15.350> some<00:15:15.576> time.

00:15:15.914 --> 00:15:19.114
So<00:15:16.011> I'm<00:15:16.220> really<00:15:16.639> enjoying<00:15:17.745> reading<00:15:18.308> Chasing<00:15:18.792> Hope.

00:15:19.517 --> 00:15:25.897
But<00:15:19.839> I<00:15:19.984> have<00:15:20.725> Lovely<00:15:21.112> One<00:15:21.353> from<00:15:21.531> Ketanji<00:15:22.014> Jackson<00:15:22.417> on<00:15:22.562> my<00:15:22.675> night<00:15:23.319> table,<00:15:23.722> and<00:15:23.867> so<00:15:24.124> I'm<00:15:24.270> hoping<00:15:24.672> to<00:15:24.833> get<00:15:25.075> to<00:15:25.172> that<00:15:25.478> next.

00:15:27.212 --> 00:15:29.879
I<00:15:27.456> also<00:15:28.123> just<00:15:28.513> love<00:15:28.838> reading<00:15:29.179> biographies.

00:15:30.057 --> 00:15:43.005
And<00:15:30.155> so<00:15:31.391> there's<00:15:31.683> been<00:15:31.830> many,<00:15:33.056> whether<00:15:36.056> it's<00:15:36.540> Katherine<00:15:37.089> Graham<00:15:37.508> from<00:15:37.767> some<00:15:38.218> old<00:15:38.622> biographies<00:15:39.525> to<00:15:40.074> Trevor<00:15:40.348> Noah<00:15:40.913> to,<00:15:41.364> you<00:15:41.397> know,<00:15:41.542> more<00:15:41.770> contemporary<00:15:42.517> work.

00:15:43.151 --> 00:15:53.140
I<00:15:43.233> find<00:15:43.558> it<00:15:43.736> really<00:15:44.062> fascinating,<00:15:44.793> especially<00:15:45.792> if<00:15:45.872> we're<00:15:46.097> lucky<00:15:46.338> enough<00:15:46.755> and<00:15:46.899> they're<00:15:47.076> being<00:15:47.380> read<00:15:48.279> by<00:15:48.439> the<00:15:48.664> author<00:15:48.921> themselves,<00:15:49.787> I<00:15:49.883> think<00:15:50.204> that<00:15:51.568> that's<00:15:52.049> really<00:15:52.611> exciting.

00:15:54.199 --> 00:15:58.354
And<00:15:54.279> then<00:15:55.483> I<00:15:56.204> read<00:15:56.862> fiction<00:15:57.408> as<00:15:57.568> well,<00:15:57.809> of<00:15:57.969> course.

00:15:58.691 --> 00:16:03.103
Let's<00:16:01.034> see,<00:16:01.451> I<00:16:01.595> love<00:16:01.820> Gentlemen<00:16:02.462> in<00:16:02.558> Moscow.

00:16:03.601 --> 00:16:14.799
I<00:16:03.681> think<00:16:04.483> this<00:16:04.660> is<00:16:04.884> like<00:16:06.232> a<00:16:06.264> surprise<00:16:06.890> story,<00:16:07.772> but<00:16:09.056> really<00:16:09.457> fun<00:16:10.885> to<00:16:11.061> find<00:16:12.104> and<00:16:12.264> read<00:16:12.505> about<00:16:13.291> a<00:16:13.371> different<00:16:13.628> time<00:16:13.869> period<00:16:14.270> and<00:16:14.430> so<00:16:14.671> on.

00:16:15.537 --> 00:16:16.018
Oh<00:16:15.713> yeah.

00:16:16.740 --> 00:16:19.289
Uh,<00:16:17.718> 2014<00:16:18.423> was<00:16:18.584> kind<00:16:18.744> of<00:16:18.776> fascinating.

00:16:19.385 --> 00:16:27.980
I'd<00:16:19.482> love<00:16:19.706> your<00:16:19.802> perspective<00:16:20.348> on<00:16:20.444> it<00:16:20.476> because<00:16:20.989> you're<00:16:21.165> kind<00:16:21.326> of<00:16:21.470> on<00:16:21.630> the<00:16:21.727> ground,<00:16:23.074> um,<00:16:23.571> kind<00:16:23.731> of<00:16:23.875> dealing<00:16:24.212> with<00:16:24.918> economic<00:16:25.575> trends<00:16:26.072> and<00:16:26.217> macro<00:16:26.617> and<00:16:26.698> micro<00:16:27.082> trends<00:16:27.339> at<00:16:27.419> the<00:16:27.499> same<00:16:27.740> time.

00:16:28.381 --> 00:16:29.071
It's<00:16:28.526> really<00:16:28.782> interesting.

00:16:29.119 --> 00:16:41.979
So<00:16:29.408> as<00:16:29.744> 2024<00:16:30.450> played<00:16:30.771> out<00:16:31.428> and<00:16:31.508> we<00:16:31.588> had<00:16:31.685> this<00:16:31.893> inflation,<00:16:32.551> we<00:16:32.775> had<00:16:32.951> anxiety<00:16:33.448> around<00:16:33.753> election,<00:16:34.090> I<00:16:34.154> mean,<00:16:34.314> all<00:16:34.475> the<00:16:34.555> various<00:16:35.020> things<00:16:35.357> that<00:16:35.581> kind<00:16:35.742> of<00:16:35.838> came<00:16:36.062> with<00:16:36.158> 2024,<00:16:37.521> how<00:16:37.618> are<00:16:37.826> you<00:16:37.987> thinking<00:16:38.339> about<00:16:38.484> 2025<00:16:39.526> and<00:16:39.606> how<00:16:39.766> are<00:16:39.911> you<00:16:40.007> thinking<00:16:40.312> it's<00:16:40.488> going<00:16:40.584> to<00:16:40.713> compare<00:16:41.145> to<00:16:41.290> what<00:16:41.434> we<00:16:41.530> just<00:16:41.755> went<00:16:41.931> through?

00:16:43.117 --> 00:16:47.220
Oh,<00:16:43.213> you<00:16:43.310> know,<00:16:44.095> if<00:16:44.239> I<00:16:44.351> knew,<00:16:45.361> I<00:16:45.602> think<00:16:45.842> I<00:16:45.858> would<00:16:46.002> get<00:16:46.323> paid<00:16:46.499> a<00:16:46.515> lot<00:16:46.900> more.

00:16:47.541 --> 00:16:56.676
And<00:16:47.621> I<00:16:47.701> got<00:16:47.941> to<00:16:48.006> tell<00:16:48.262> you,<00:16:49.224> I<00:16:49.304> mean,<00:16:50.105> generally<00:16:50.586> speaking,<00:16:51.724> something<00:16:52.189> like<00:16:52.493> 80%<00:16:52.894> of<00:16:53.391> economists<00:16:54.032> predicted<00:16:54.449> that<00:16:54.593> we<00:16:54.817> would<00:16:54.977> be<00:16:55.074> in<00:16:55.314> a<00:16:55.554> recession<00:16:56.115> this<00:16:56.356> year.

00:16:57.221 --> 00:17:00.875
And<00:16:57.381> obviously<00:16:57.814> it's<00:16:57.958> the<00:16:58.103> end<00:16:58.263> of<00:16:58.359> the<00:16:58.503> year<00:16:58.984> and<00:16:59.160> we're<00:16:59.417> nowhere<00:16:59.962> near<00:17:00.282> a<00:17:00.347> recession.

00:17:01.420 --> 00:17:04.225
So<00:17:02.109> I<00:17:02.286> am<00:17:02.767> by<00:17:02.927> no<00:17:03.103> means<00:17:03.712> a<00:17:03.744> predictor.

00:17:04.514 --> 00:17:08.665
I<00:17:04.690> do<00:17:04.850> think<00:17:05.155> that<00:17:05.315> we're<00:17:06.693> continuing<00:17:07.318> to<00:17:07.495> lean<00:17:07.735> into<00:17:07.975> the<00:17:08.136> uncertainty.

00:17:08.937 --> 00:17:17.104
I<00:17:09.161> do<00:17:09.354> not<00:17:09.738> know<00:17:10.123> exactly<00:17:10.860> how<00:17:11.101> much<00:17:12.143> how<00:17:12.304> much<00:17:12.545> of<00:17:12.625> what's<00:17:12.866> being<00:17:13.107> said<00:17:13.347> is<00:17:13.588> bluff<00:17:14.134> versus<00:17:14.535> how<00:17:14.632> much<00:17:14.953> is<00:17:15.177> real<00:17:15.579> when<00:17:15.739> it<00:17:15.771> comes<00:17:16.060> to<00:17:16.221> things<00:17:16.429> like<00:17:16.622> tariffs.

00:17:17.826 --> 00:17:30.090
Obviously<00:17:18.468> the<00:17:18.709> impact<00:17:19.126> of<00:17:19.287> what<00:17:19.511> may<00:17:19.672> happen<00:17:20.170> if,<00:17:20.555> if<00:17:21.133> Trump<00:17:21.438> does<00:17:21.630> impose<00:17:22.561> huge<00:17:22.802> tariffs<00:17:23.444> either<00:17:23.846> on<00:17:24.006> our<00:17:24.504> neighbors<00:17:24.905> to<00:17:25.066> the<00:17:25.146> north<00:17:25.403> and<00:17:25.483> south<00:17:26.013> or<00:17:26.189> elsewhere,<00:17:27.217> that<00:17:27.457> will<00:17:27.778> play<00:17:28.196> into<00:17:28.661> inflation,<00:17:29.303> I<00:17:29.560> believe.

00:17:30.684 --> 00:17:42.081
I<00:17:30.764> do<00:17:30.925> think<00:17:31.165> just<00:17:31.390> the<00:17:31.487> most<00:17:31.792> recent<00:17:32.193> job<00:17:32.450> numbers<00:17:32.851> came<00:17:33.076> out<00:17:33.333> really<00:17:33.573> strongly,<00:17:34.280> which<00:17:35.323> then<00:17:35.660> makes<00:17:35.981> me<00:17:36.126> feel<00:17:36.463> that<00:17:36.704> inflation<00:17:37.265> is,<00:17:37.570> is<00:17:37.667> gonna<00:17:37.907> continue<00:17:38.550> to<00:17:38.710> be<00:17:38.951> a<00:17:39.031> little<00:17:39.272> bit<00:17:39.432> more<00:17:39.577> stubborn<00:17:40.075> than<00:17:40.460> probably<00:17:40.941> the<00:17:41.038> Fed<00:17:41.423> wants<00:17:41.696> it<00:17:41.840> to<00:17:42.001> be.

00:17:42.723 --> 00:17:52.300
Which<00:17:43.188> also<00:17:43.461> makes<00:17:43.766> me<00:17:43.846> feel<00:17:44.183> that<00:17:44.712> it's<00:17:46.092> possible<00:17:46.653> that<00:17:47.599> the<00:17:47.680> rate<00:17:47.920> cuts<00:17:48.257> are<00:17:48.337> not<00:17:48.578> going<00:17:48.722> to<00:17:48.819> be<00:17:48.979> as<00:17:49.123> aggressive<00:17:49.621> as<00:17:49.781> maybe<00:17:50.182> originally<00:17:50.744> we<00:17:50.984> thought<00:17:51.546> that<00:17:51.706> they<00:17:51.867> would<00:17:52.107> be.

00:17:52.813 --> 00:18:00.385
I<00:17:52.989> follow<00:17:53.567> the<00:17:53.711> housing<00:17:54.273> market<00:17:54.818> a<00:17:54.834> lot<00:17:55.315> because<00:17:56.021> our<00:17:56.438> business<00:17:56.839> is<00:17:57.000> very<00:17:57.305> tied<00:17:57.641> to<00:17:57.738> the<00:17:57.866> housing<00:17:58.203> market,<00:17:58.524> particularly<00:17:59.085> single-family<00:17:59.727> housing<00:18:00.112> market.

00:18:00.449 --> 00:18:09.175
And,<00:18:01.171> you<00:18:01.267> know,<00:18:01.411> I<00:18:01.556> have<00:18:01.716> to<00:18:01.748> say,<00:18:02.277> I<00:18:02.374> think<00:18:02.534> we're<00:18:02.695> looking<00:18:02.999> at<00:18:04.058> this<00:18:04.283> year<00:18:04.620> being<00:18:04.924> the<00:18:05.085> worst<00:18:05.422> in<00:18:05.566> terms<00:18:05.823> of<00:18:05.903> sales<00:18:06.946> of<00:18:07.042> existing<00:18:07.571> homes<00:18:07.972> since<00:18:08.149> 1995.

00:18:10.155 --> 00:18:11.327
People<00:18:10.396> are<00:18:10.621> just<00:18:10.813> not<00:18:11.022> moving.

00:18:11.424 --> 00:18:14.651
And<00:18:11.504> I<00:18:11.600> think<00:18:11.761> people<00:18:11.986> are<00:18:12.018> not<00:18:12.178> moving<00:18:12.548> because<00:18:12.805> of<00:18:12.965> interest<00:18:13.367> rate,<00:18:13.527> because<00:18:13.848> of<00:18:13.913> mortgage<00:18:14.314> rates.

00:18:14.796 --> 00:18:18.602
And<00:18:15.358> I<00:18:15.454> think<00:18:15.615> mostly<00:18:16.032> it's<00:18:16.177> because<00:18:16.482> we<00:18:16.643> have<00:18:17.044> this<00:18:17.285> recency<00:18:17.863> bias,<00:18:18.409> right?

00:18:18.666 --> 00:18:22.006
Many<00:18:18.907> of<00:18:19.051> us<00:18:19.212> are<00:18:19.453> very<00:18:19.694> used<00:18:19.870> to<00:18:20.031> this<00:18:20.256> sort<00:18:20.416> of<00:18:20.513> 3%,<00:18:21.316> 4%<00:18:21.637> rates.

00:18:22.600 --> 00:18:26.792
And<00:18:22.761> I<00:18:22.922> just,<00:18:23.243> I<00:18:23.548> don't<00:18:23.869> know<00:18:24.126> that<00:18:24.287> we're<00:18:24.431> going<00:18:24.495> to<00:18:24.608> see<00:18:24.929> those<00:18:25.314> still<00:18:25.571> in<00:18:25.732> this<00:18:25.973> decade<00:18:26.438> at<00:18:26.599> least.

00:18:26.936 --> 00:18:34.083
And<00:18:27.081> I<00:18:27.177> think<00:18:27.482> generally<00:18:28.125> that<00:18:28.382> was<00:18:28.558> an<00:18:28.703> anomaly,<00:18:29.586> but<00:18:29.698> it's<00:18:29.907> hard<00:18:30.228> to<00:18:30.389> think<00:18:30.550> that<00:18:30.710> that's<00:18:31.015> an<00:18:31.112> anomaly<00:18:31.818> when<00:18:32.075> for<00:18:32.300> so<00:18:32.557> many<00:18:32.717> people<00:18:32.974> that's<00:18:33.135> the<00:18:33.344> only<00:18:33.601> thing<00:18:33.842> they<00:18:33.922> knew.

00:18:34.163 --> 00:18:43.445
But<00:18:34.307> if<00:18:34.404> you<00:18:34.548> talk<00:18:34.869> to<00:18:34.966> people<00:18:35.287> who<00:18:35.367> are<00:18:35.512> in<00:18:35.608> their<00:18:35.704> 60s<00:18:36.154> and<00:18:36.250> 70s,<00:18:37.214> they'll<00:18:37.519> often<00:18:37.937> talk<00:18:38.274> to<00:18:38.402> you<00:18:38.579> about<00:18:40.008> interest<00:18:40.345> rates<00:18:40.747> being,<00:18:41.213> or<00:18:41.550> their<00:18:41.646> mortgage<00:18:42.032> rates<00:18:42.273> being<00:18:42.497> at<00:18:42.610> 17,<00:18:43.220> 18%.

00:18:43.541 --> 00:18:44.521
Yeah,<00:18:43.782> exactly.

00:18:44.986 --> 00:18:45.147
Yeah.

00:18:45.725 --> 00:18:52.743
You<00:18:45.822> know,<00:18:46.046> so<00:18:46.271> I<00:18:46.368> think<00:18:46.608> when<00:18:46.769> we<00:18:46.994> get<00:18:47.331> to<00:18:47.572> sort<00:18:47.829> of<00:18:47.893> stabilize<00:18:49.178> around<00:18:49.499> 5,<00:18:49.981> 6%,<00:18:51.265> I<00:18:51.346> think<00:18:51.571> we're<00:18:51.667> going<00:18:51.779> to<00:18:51.828> see<00:18:52.052> that<00:18:52.165> for<00:18:52.406> a<00:18:52.470> while.

00:18:53.209 --> 00:18:55.553
If<00:18:53.337> I<00:18:53.433> had<00:18:53.594> to<00:18:53.674> guess,<00:18:53.915> certainly<00:18:54.397> through<00:18:54.638> 2025.

00:18:56.485 --> 00:18:56.790
Yeah.

00:18:56.966 --> 00:18:57.127
Yeah.

00:18:57.304 --> 00:18:58.524
I<00:18:57.352> think,<00:18:57.528> I<00:18:57.673> think<00:18:57.769> you're<00:18:57.850> definitely<00:18:58.171> right<00:18:58.412> there.

00:18:58.797 --> 00:19:00.307
Although<00:18:59.536> again,<00:18:59.841> who<00:19:00.001> knows?

00:19:00.644 --> 00:19:03.759
Like<00:19:02.185> predicting<00:19:02.667> the<00:19:02.812> economy<00:19:03.229> is<00:19:03.326> so<00:19:03.550> wild.

00:19:04.353 --> 00:19:06.119
It's<00:19:04.514> a,<00:19:04.594> it's<00:19:04.819> a,<00:19:04.979> it's<00:19:05.156> a<00:19:05.236> crazy<00:19:05.701> task.

00:19:06.664 --> 00:19:14.176
I<00:19:06.696> don't<00:19:06.841> know<00:19:06.905> if<00:19:07.001> you<00:19:07.146> experienced<00:19:07.627> this,<00:19:07.804> but<00:19:08.029> as<00:19:08.125> I've<00:19:08.269> been<00:19:08.366> talking<00:19:08.526> to<00:19:08.606> a<00:19:08.671> lot<00:19:08.847> of<00:19:08.927> CEOs<00:19:09.409> and<00:19:09.553> leaders,<00:19:10.276> I'm<00:19:10.436> hearing<00:19:10.693> more<00:19:11.094> and<00:19:11.174> more<00:19:11.736> challenges<00:19:12.378> with<00:19:12.539> mental<00:19:12.860> health<00:19:13.165> within<00:19:13.502> the<00:19:13.582> employee<00:19:13.983> base.

00:19:14.224 --> 00:19:22.506
Just,<00:19:14.850> just<00:19:15.107> mental<00:19:15.492> health<00:19:15.749> being<00:19:15.925> like<00:19:16.134> a<00:19:16.696> really,<00:19:17.033> really<00:19:17.338> big<00:19:17.514> topic<00:19:18.381> in<00:19:18.622> general<00:19:19.280> and<00:19:19.440> coming<00:19:19.825> out<00:19:19.938> of<00:19:20.002> the<00:19:20.146> pandemic<00:19:21.190> and<00:19:21.270> how<00:19:21.527> leaders<00:19:21.848> are<00:19:21.992> dealing<00:19:22.313> with<00:19:22.409> that.

00:19:22.570 --> 00:19:23.372
How<00:19:22.666> do<00:19:22.795> you<00:19:22.891> deal<00:19:23.035> with<00:19:23.276> it?

00:19:23.597 --> 00:19:27.802
Uh,<00:19:24.416> you<00:19:24.512> know,<00:19:24.592> kind<00:19:24.801> of<00:19:24.833> maintain<00:19:25.218> your<00:19:25.443> own,<00:19:26.005> you<00:19:26.085> know,<00:19:26.326> mental<00:19:26.823> sanity<00:19:27.305> and<00:19:27.385> mental<00:19:27.690> health.

00:19:27.882 --> 00:19:29.439
And<00:19:27.995> how<00:19:28.187> are<00:19:28.252> you<00:19:28.348> to<00:19:28.428> think<00:19:28.605> about<00:19:28.845> it<00:19:28.926> for<00:19:29.054> your<00:19:29.199> employees?

00:19:30.338 --> 00:19:32.457
I<00:19:30.434> think<00:19:30.659> it's<00:19:30.820> a<00:19:31.060> really<00:19:31.397> important<00:19:31.879> topic.

00:19:33.243 --> 00:19:36.341
I<00:19:33.404> think<00:19:34.527> I<00:19:34.608> can<00:19:34.848> tell<00:19:35.073> you<00:19:35.250> a<00:19:35.410> little<00:19:35.651> bit<00:19:35.795> of<00:19:35.956> our<00:19:36.036> employees.

00:19:36.389 --> 00:19:38.909
So<00:19:36.614> we<00:19:36.775> provide<00:19:38.316> services.

00:19:39.086 --> 00:19:45.266
We,<00:19:40.290> you<00:19:40.322> know,<00:19:40.531> contract<00:19:41.012> out<00:19:41.108> with<00:19:41.333> Headspace<00:19:41.911> and<00:19:42.152> others,<00:19:42.954> I<00:19:43.115> think,<00:19:43.853> to<00:19:44.720> help<00:19:45.041> people.

00:19:45.362 --> 00:19:53.901
But<00:19:45.539> I<00:19:45.683> think<00:19:46.004> really<00:19:46.887> what<00:19:47.192> it<00:19:47.288> comes<00:19:47.593> down<00:19:47.850> to<00:19:48.091> is<00:19:48.331> what<00:19:48.492> types<00:19:48.813> of<00:19:48.957> policies<00:19:49.616> do<00:19:49.776> we<00:19:49.937> have<00:19:50.177> as<00:19:50.338> an<00:19:50.482> employer<00:19:51.542> to<00:19:51.686> help<00:19:51.943> people<00:19:52.328> do<00:19:52.489> their<00:19:52.810> very<00:19:53.291> best<00:19:53.693> work?

00:19:54.656 --> 00:19:58.219
And<00:19:54.752> so<00:19:55.474> that<00:19:55.779> means,<00:19:56.341> you<00:19:56.373> know,<00:19:56.518> are<00:19:56.742> their<00:19:56.839> managers<00:19:57.465> listening<00:19:57.802> to<00:19:57.962> them?

00:19:58.524 --> 00:20:00.835
Do<00:19:58.620> they<00:19:58.765> feel<00:19:59.022> like<00:19:59.246> they<00:19:59.407> have<00:19:59.631> the<00:19:59.728> right<00:19:59.888> career<00:20:00.354> advancement?

00:20:01.316 --> 00:20:04.620
Do<00:20:01.413> they<00:20:01.557> feel<00:20:01.830> like<00:20:03.016> there's<00:20:03.321> safety<00:20:03.883> in<00:20:03.979> speaking<00:20:04.524> up?

00:20:04.700 --> 00:20:09.448
Do<00:20:04.781> they<00:20:04.941> feel<00:20:05.358> like<00:20:06.224> they<00:20:06.449> can<00:20:07.250> take<00:20:07.507> time<00:20:07.972> when<00:20:08.068> they<00:20:08.165> need<00:20:08.453> to<00:20:08.550> take<00:20:08.854> time<00:20:09.175> off?

00:20:09.656 --> 00:20:18.605
All<00:20:09.817> of<00:20:09.977> those<00:20:10.314> things<00:20:11.196> are<00:20:11.276> things<00:20:11.517> that<00:20:11.661> we<00:20:11.741> spend<00:20:11.982> a<00:20:12.062> lot<00:20:12.254> of<00:20:12.318> time<00:20:12.559> thinking<00:20:12.896> about<00:20:13.345> and<00:20:13.826> implementing<00:20:14.403> to<00:20:14.500> make<00:20:14.644> sure<00:20:15.045> that<00:20:15.622> our<00:20:15.767> teams<00:20:16.408> feel<00:20:16.729> like<00:20:17.050> they<00:20:17.290> can<00:20:17.691> do<00:20:17.851> their<00:20:18.012> best<00:20:18.333> work.

00:20:19.054 --> 00:20:21.107
But<00:20:19.215> still,<00:20:19.760> it's<00:20:20.081> very<00:20:20.418> challenging.

00:20:21.219 --> 00:20:25.502
I<00:20:21.380> think<00:20:21.685> also<00:20:21.941> being<00:20:22.246> remote<00:20:23.866> does<00:20:24.186> make<00:20:24.443> it<00:20:24.587> a<00:20:24.652> little<00:20:24.828> bit<00:20:24.972> more<00:20:25.069> challenging.

00:20:25.550 --> 00:20:30.329
I<00:20:25.630> know<00:20:25.806> for<00:20:25.951> myself,<00:20:26.993> when<00:20:27.137> I<00:20:27.234> go<00:20:27.474> into<00:20:27.699> the<00:20:27.859> office<00:20:28.196> and<00:20:28.356> see<00:20:28.597> people<00:20:28.918> all<00:20:29.078> day,<00:20:29.383> it's<00:20:29.495> super<00:20:29.880> exciting.

00:20:30.842 --> 00:20:36.132
Because<00:20:31.147> I<00:20:31.163> don't<00:20:31.435> do<00:20:31.499> it<00:20:31.644> every<00:20:31.884> day,<00:20:32.269> I<00:20:32.349> find<00:20:32.685> it<00:20:32.766> that<00:20:33.006> it's<00:20:33.231> draining<00:20:33.727> for<00:20:33.824> someone<00:20:34.769> like<00:20:35.090> me<00:20:35.250> who's<00:20:35.411> an<00:20:35.555> extrovert.

00:20:36.597 --> 00:20:39.899
And,<00:20:36.837> you<00:20:36.917> know,<00:20:37.078> for<00:20:37.174> many<00:20:37.414> people<00:20:37.719> who<00:20:37.751> are<00:20:37.959> introverts,<00:20:38.536> it<00:20:38.617> must<00:20:38.841> be<00:20:38.937> double<00:20:39.162> or<00:20:39.258> triple<00:20:39.594> that.

00:20:40.765 --> 00:20:57.083
But<00:20:40.925> yet<00:20:41.101> when<00:20:41.326> I'm<00:20:41.422> here<00:20:41.743> by<00:20:41.839> myself<00:20:42.849> all<00:20:43.169> day,<00:20:43.522> just<00:20:43.682> sort<00:20:43.971> of<00:20:44.003> stuck<00:20:44.532> in<00:20:44.612> my<00:20:44.788> office,<00:20:45.750> I<00:20:45.894> also<00:20:46.151> feel<00:20:46.552> that<00:20:48.812> feeling<00:20:49.261> of<00:20:49.437> being<00:20:49.742> very<00:20:50.062> alone,<00:20:50.543> which<00:20:50.719> is<00:20:50.816> very<00:20:51.104> different<00:20:51.441> than<00:20:51.986> sort<00:20:52.178> of<00:20:52.322> early<00:20:52.643> on<00:20:53.348> in<00:20:53.509> COVID<00:20:53.845> where,<00:20:54.326> you<00:20:54.406> know,<00:20:54.567> my<00:20:54.711> whole<00:20:54.871> family<00:20:55.272> was<00:20:55.528> here,<00:20:55.705> my<00:20:55.833> husband<00:20:56.170> was<00:20:56.314> here,<00:20:56.490> my<00:20:56.635> kids<00:20:56.875> were<00:20:56.971> here.

00:20:57.676 --> 00:20:59.392
And<00:20:57.773> so<00:20:57.933> sometimes<00:20:58.318> that<00:20:58.414> made<00:20:58.574> things<00:20:58.879> harder.

00:20:59.696 --> 00:21:07.150
But<00:20:59.921> also<00:21:00.337> even<00:21:00.578> when<00:21:00.738> I<00:21:00.754> stepped<00:21:01.059> out<00:21:01.139> for<00:21:01.299> 2<00:21:01.395> seconds,<00:21:01.924> there<00:21:02.021> would<00:21:02.181> be<00:21:02.277> like,<00:21:02.502> faces<00:21:03.367> around<00:21:04.040> so<00:21:04.169> you<00:21:04.249> don't<00:21:04.409> feel<00:21:04.650> so<00:21:04.970> alone<00:21:05.451> versus<00:21:05.772> just<00:21:06.012> alone<00:21:06.429> all<00:21:06.573> day,<00:21:06.830> every<00:21:07.070> day.

00:21:07.247 --> 00:21:11.174
So<00:21:08.192> there<00:21:08.289> are<00:21:08.417> things<00:21:08.593> that<00:21:08.753> I<00:21:08.898> do,<00:21:09.138> like<00:21:09.459> I<00:21:09.555> try<00:21:09.795> to<00:21:10.661> take<00:21:10.837> a<00:21:10.918> walk.

00:21:11.302 --> 00:21:16.304
I<00:21:11.479> go<00:21:11.719> running<00:21:12.360> 3<00:21:12.585> times<00:21:12.857> a<00:21:13.563> week<00:21:14.204> because<00:21:14.925> it<00:21:15.069> really<00:21:15.326> clears<00:21:15.727> my<00:21:15.871> mind.

00:21:16.352 --> 00:21:19.830
And<00:21:16.833> I<00:21:16.993> hate<00:21:17.250> the<00:21:17.394> running<00:21:17.730> part,<00:21:18.035> but<00:21:18.195> I<00:21:18.452> love<00:21:18.692> what<00:21:18.869> it<00:21:18.997> does<00:21:19.237> for<00:21:19.285> my<00:21:19.494> mind.

00:21:19.879 --> 00:21:21.129
And<00:21:19.975> so<00:21:20.215> that's<00:21:20.456> why<00:21:20.520> I<00:21:20.776> do<00:21:21.001> it.

00:21:22.363 --> 00:21:33.668
And<00:21:23.004> I,<00:21:23.421> you<00:21:23.501> know,<00:21:23.966> I<00:21:24.127> try<00:21:24.303> to<00:21:24.399> make<00:21:24.624> sure<00:21:24.944> that<00:21:25.185> I<00:21:25.265> have<00:21:25.441> enough<00:21:25.890> outside<00:21:26.162> appointments<00:21:27.333> or<00:21:27.365> things<00:21:27.814> that<00:21:27.974> I<00:21:28.070> get<00:21:28.230> to<00:21:28.375> do<00:21:28.631> that<00:21:29.413> that<00:21:29.433> don't<00:21:29.850> sort<00:21:30.139> of,<00:21:31.101> you<00:21:31.133> know,<00:21:31.422> make<00:21:31.663> me<00:21:31.759> just<00:21:31.999> be<00:21:32.160> in<00:21:32.240> this<00:21:32.481> office<00:21:32.946> all<00:21:33.026> day,<00:21:33.283> every<00:21:33.523> day.

00:21:34.486 --> 00:21:36.940
I<00:21:34.566> do<00:21:34.742> a<00:21:34.806> lot<00:21:35.031> of<00:21:35.063> travel<00:21:35.608> as<00:21:35.769> well,<00:21:36.009> which,<00:21:36.410> which<00:21:36.635> helps.

00:21:38.335 --> 00:21:40.565
How<00:21:38.480> do<00:21:38.560> you<00:21:38.656> think<00:21:38.881> about<00:21:39.298> culture<00:21:39.779> at<00:21:39.859> TaskRabbit?

00:21:40.661 --> 00:21:50.494
And<00:21:40.725> I<00:21:40.886> wonder<00:21:41.383> if<00:21:41.543> you've<00:21:41.704> applied<00:21:42.249> anything<00:21:43.693> that<00:21:43.949> you<00:21:44.094> learned<00:21:44.286> from<00:21:44.430> like<00:21:44.655> Airbnb<00:21:45.152> or<00:21:45.216> Uber<00:21:45.698> and<00:21:45.794> Uber<00:21:46.035> Eats<00:21:46.355> and,<00:21:46.981> you<00:21:47.013> know,<00:21:47.238> like<00:21:47.478> how<00:21:47.719> you<00:21:47.815> think<00:21:48.120> about<00:21:48.441> building<00:21:48.825> a<00:21:48.906> unique<00:21:49.307> culture<00:21:49.724> within<00:21:50.045> the<00:21:50.109> company.

00:21:51.889 --> 00:21:53.782
So<00:21:52.515> I<00:21:52.611> think<00:21:52.755> it's<00:21:52.948> a<00:21:53.076> great<00:21:53.333> question.

00:21:53.830 --> 00:22:02.664
So<00:21:54.520> I<00:21:54.616> often<00:21:54.921> tell<00:21:55.562> our<00:21:56.124> teams<00:21:56.685> that,<00:21:57.727> We're<00:21:57.823> not<00:21:58.048> going<00:21:58.176> to<00:21:58.368> win<00:21:59.330> with<00:21:59.571> just,<00:22:00.067> just<00:22:00.372> by<00:22:00.532> having<00:22:00.949> great<00:22:01.334> culture<00:22:01.911> in<00:22:02.055> and<00:22:02.151> of<00:22:02.248> itself.

00:22:02.712 --> 00:22:03.578
That's<00:22:02.953> not<00:22:03.257> enough.

00:22:04.155 --> 00:22:07.521
But<00:22:04.299> we<00:22:04.460> also<00:22:04.780> cannot<00:22:05.341> win<00:22:05.998> without<00:22:06.543> having<00:22:06.784> great<00:22:07.040> culture.

00:22:07.746 --> 00:22:20.714
And<00:22:07.858> so<00:22:08.723> it's<00:22:08.948> been<00:22:09.365> a<00:22:09.445> foundational<00:22:10.230> piece<00:22:10.631> for<00:22:11.048> me<00:22:11.593> as<00:22:11.753> a<00:22:11.833> leader<00:22:12.635> because<00:22:12.971> I<00:22:13.132> saw<00:22:13.997> how<00:22:14.414> big<00:22:14.670> it<00:22:14.959> played<00:22:15.616> in<00:22:15.857> both,<00:22:16.338> both<00:22:16.578> at<00:22:16.802> Airbnb<00:22:17.299> and<00:22:17.379> at<00:22:17.604> Uber,<00:22:18.245> who<00:22:18.341> both<00:22:18.582> have<00:22:18.822> very<00:22:19.143> distinct<00:22:19.784> and<00:22:19.944> different<00:22:20.265> cultures.

00:22:20.810 --> 00:22:27.286
And<00:22:21.050> actually<00:22:21.467> both<00:22:21.707> of<00:22:21.788> them<00:22:22.252> have<00:22:22.429> evolved<00:22:23.054> their<00:22:23.294> cultures<00:22:23.920> considerably<00:22:25.074> since<00:22:25.314> the<00:22:25.394> time<00:22:26.260> that<00:22:26.581> I<00:22:26.677> was<00:22:26.901> there,<00:22:27.093> right?

00:22:27.334 --> 00:22:38.699
So<00:22:27.558> Airbnb<00:22:28.039> under<00:22:28.280> Brian<00:22:28.761> started<00:22:29.242> as<00:22:29.402> a<00:22:29.482> different<00:22:29.722> company<00:22:30.668> than<00:22:30.845> I<00:22:30.989> would<00:22:31.229> argue<00:22:31.566> it<00:22:31.710> is<00:22:31.886> today,<00:22:32.672> even<00:22:32.993> under<00:22:33.249> the<00:22:33.329> same<00:22:33.730> leader,<00:22:34.211> as<00:22:34.435> Brian<00:22:34.852> as<00:22:34.996> a<00:22:35.093> leader<00:22:35.493> has<00:22:35.734> evolved<00:22:36.199> his<00:22:36.375> thinking<00:22:36.872> about<00:22:37.176> what<00:22:37.337> it<00:22:37.497> means<00:22:37.834> to<00:22:37.994> succeed.

00:22:39.244 --> 00:22:48.927
And<00:22:39.357> then,<00:22:39.805> you<00:22:39.837> know,<00:22:40.062> TK<00:22:40.447> at<00:22:40.687> Uber,<00:22:41.104> obviously,<00:22:42.290> um,<00:22:43.588> in<00:22:43.669> 2017<00:22:44.855> it<00:22:44.935> was<00:22:45.111> a<00:22:45.192> very<00:22:45.592> different<00:22:45.993> time<00:22:46.554> than,<00:22:46.859> for<00:22:47.019> example,<00:22:47.436> how<00:22:47.676> Airbnb<00:22:48.157> was<00:22:48.462> operating.

00:22:49.584 --> 00:22:53.960
But<00:22:50.241> Dara<00:22:50.882> has<00:22:51.203> taken<00:22:51.668> it<00:22:51.828> to<00:22:52.229> a<00:22:52.325> very<00:22:52.806> different<00:22:53.207> new<00:22:53.367> level<00:22:53.687> as<00:22:53.832> well.

00:22:54.024 --> 00:22:59.094
So<00:22:54.794> looking<00:22:55.210> and<00:22:55.435> learning<00:22:55.932> those<00:22:56.317> evolutions<00:22:56.959> has<00:22:57.296> been<00:22:57.682> really<00:22:58.420> interesting.

00:22:59.287 --> 00:23:03.573
I<00:22:59.464> think<00:23:00.170> at<00:23:00.266> TaskRabbit,<00:23:01.791> we<00:23:01.936> have<00:23:02.193> to<00:23:02.289> sort<00:23:02.658> of<00:23:02.690> find<00:23:03.076> a<00:23:03.156> balance.

00:23:03.637 --> 00:23:08.485
We<00:23:03.798> have<00:23:04.055> to<00:23:04.199> be<00:23:04.344> a<00:23:04.360> high-performing<00:23:05.467> culture,<00:23:06.431> but<00:23:06.543> we<00:23:06.768> really<00:23:07.009> have<00:23:07.185> to<00:23:07.314> care<00:23:07.490> about<00:23:07.747> each<00:23:07.972> other<00:23:08.212> as<00:23:08.373> well.

00:23:08.630 --> 00:23:21.954
So,<00:23:08.871> we<00:23:09.015> just<00:23:09.336> went<00:23:09.641> through<00:23:09.898> this<00:23:11.423> values<00:23:11.969> exercise<00:23:12.531> where<00:23:12.707> we<00:23:13.109> redid<00:23:13.687> some<00:23:13.976> of<00:23:14.088> our<00:23:14.313> core<00:23:14.553> values<00:23:15.196> because<00:23:15.822> we<00:23:15.918> felt<00:23:16.239> like<00:23:16.961> it's<00:23:17.828> been<00:23:18.005> many,<00:23:18.246> many<00:23:18.551> years<00:23:18.824> since<00:23:19.113> the<00:23:19.193> last<00:23:19.450> set<00:23:19.610> of<00:23:19.690> values<00:23:20.092> were<00:23:20.252> developed<00:23:20.734> and<00:23:20.878> we're<00:23:21.039> a<00:23:21.055> much<00:23:21.296> different<00:23:21.601> company.

00:23:22.002 --> 00:23:22.901
We're<00:23:22.114> much,<00:23:22.419> much<00:23:22.660> bigger.

00:23:23.286 --> 00:23:24.618
We're<00:23:23.543> much<00:23:23.767> more<00:23:24.008> international.

00:23:24.810 --> 00:23:27.409
We<00:23:25.131> are<00:23:25.291> playing<00:23:25.628> in<00:23:25.789> different,<00:23:26.430> different<00:23:26.735> spaces<00:23:27.312> now.

00:23:27.794 --> 00:23:37.835
And<00:23:27.954> so<00:23:28.740> it's<00:23:29.221> been<00:23:29.382> a<00:23:29.398> fun<00:23:29.783> exercise<00:23:30.280> and<00:23:30.424> I<00:23:30.601> love<00:23:30.906> getting<00:23:31.162> the<00:23:31.323> teams<00:23:31.724> involved<00:23:32.109> in<00:23:32.157> that<00:23:32.301> process<00:23:32.927> too,<00:23:33.167> because<00:23:33.552> then<00:23:33.729> they<00:23:33.889> feel<00:23:34.194> the<00:23:34.435> ownership<00:23:34.916> of<00:23:35.493> really<00:23:36.375> building<00:23:36.841> something<00:23:37.322> together.

00:23:38.220 --> 00:23:40.498
So<00:23:38.621> it<00:23:38.701> was<00:23:38.942> exciting,<00:23:39.584> but<00:23:39.808> a<00:23:39.824> lot<00:23:40.129> of<00:23:40.225> work.

00:23:40.626 --> 00:23:44.749
But<00:23:42.070> it<00:23:42.214> is<00:23:42.391> something<00:23:42.712> that<00:23:42.856> we<00:23:42.936> spend<00:23:43.193> a<00:23:43.209> lot<00:23:43.449> of<00:23:43.578> time<00:23:43.899> on<00:23:43.995> at<00:23:44.155> TaskRabbit.

00:23:45.984 --> 00:23:54.405
Finally,<00:23:46.481> we<00:23:46.706> end<00:23:46.946> every<00:23:47.203> interview<00:23:47.492> with<00:23:47.588> the<00:23:47.668> same<00:23:47.925> question,<00:23:48.871> and<00:23:48.968> that<00:23:49.224> is<00:23:49.609> at<00:23:49.689> CEO.com,<00:23:50.572> we<00:23:50.732> believe<00:23:51.037> the<00:23:51.133> chances<00:23:51.678> one<00:23:51.999> gives<00:23:52.577> is<00:23:52.657> just<00:23:52.898> as<00:23:52.978> important<00:23:53.299> as<00:23:53.443> the<00:23:53.523> chances<00:23:53.924> one<00:23:54.101> takes.

00:23:55.127 --> 00:23:58.252
When<00:23:55.367> you<00:23:55.543> hear<00:23:55.784> that,<00:23:56.088> who<00:23:56.185> gave<00:23:56.425> you<00:23:56.585> a<00:23:56.649> chance<00:23:56.970> to<00:23:57.066> get<00:23:57.227> you<00:23:57.387> to<00:23:57.451> where<00:23:57.627> you<00:23:57.804> are<00:23:57.948> today?

00:23:59.647 --> 00:24:10.787
So<00:24:00.657> I<00:24:01.378> honestly,<00:24:01.955> through<00:24:02.131> my<00:24:02.356> life,<00:24:02.821> there's<00:24:03.077> been<00:24:03.334> so<00:24:03.654> many<00:24:04.023> opportunities<00:24:04.824> here<00:24:05.145> where<00:24:05.321> people<00:24:05.786> have<00:24:06.042> given<00:24:06.684> me<00:24:06.844> a<00:24:06.988> chance<00:24:07.565> that<00:24:07.950> it<00:24:08.030> would<00:24:08.126> be<00:24:08.287> very<00:24:08.687> hard<00:24:09.152> to,<00:24:09.409> like,<00:24:10.210> list<00:24:10.434> them<00:24:10.611> all.

00:24:10.835 --> 00:24:15.275
But<00:24:11.028> I'll<00:24:11.396> just<00:24:11.637> talk<00:24:11.813> about<00:24:12.182> a<00:24:12.214> couple<00:24:12.454> of<00:24:12.598> people<00:24:13.897> who<00:24:14.137> have<00:24:14.378> been<00:24:14.602> instrumental.

00:24:15.355 --> 00:24:27.568
So<00:24:16.205> I<00:24:16.317> moved<00:24:16.782> here<00:24:17.167> from<00:24:17.648> Poland<00:24:18.064> when<00:24:18.289> I<00:24:18.385> was<00:24:18.705> 12<00:24:19.491> and<00:24:20.228> I<00:24:20.308> didn't<00:24:20.533> speak<00:24:20.869> any<00:24:21.174> English,<00:24:21.591> so<00:24:22.248> It<00:24:22.296> was<00:24:22.456> hard<00:24:22.713> to<00:24:22.793> go<00:24:22.937> to<00:24:23.017> school,<00:24:23.978> and<00:24:24.059> I<00:24:24.075> was<00:24:24.219> going<00:24:24.459> to<00:24:24.555> this<00:24:24.860> little<00:24:25.180> tiny<00:24:25.501> parochial<00:24:25.981> school<00:24:26.334> that<00:24:26.478> my<00:24:26.703> parents<00:24:27.023> put<00:24:27.183> me<00:24:27.360> in.

00:24:28.081 --> 00:24:35.147
And<00:24:28.161> there<00:24:28.241> was<00:24:28.401> this<00:24:28.497> teacher<00:24:29.042> there<00:24:29.363> who<00:24:29.459> was<00:24:29.667> just<00:24:29.923> so<00:24:31.029> deeply<00:24:31.526> dedicated<00:24:32.728> to<00:24:33.529> me<00:24:33.753> and<00:24:33.833> my<00:24:33.929> brother<00:24:34.314> learning<00:24:34.715> English.

00:24:35.756 --> 00:24:37.823
And<00:24:35.852> so<00:24:36.413> we<00:24:36.638> came<00:24:36.958> here<00:24:37.118> in<00:24:37.214> February.

00:24:37.871 --> 00:24:40.868
So<00:24:38.240> of<00:24:38.400> course<00:24:38.657> the<00:24:38.737> school<00:24:39.137> year<00:24:39.442> ended<00:24:39.698> sometime<00:24:40.099> in<00:24:40.259> May<00:24:40.403> or<00:24:40.579> June.

00:24:41.685 --> 00:24:48.431
And<00:24:41.765> then<00:24:42.006> that<00:24:42.246> entire<00:24:42.903> summer<00:24:44.025> we<00:24:44.121> met<00:24:44.425> at<00:24:44.602> school<00:24:45.210> every<00:24:45.547> day<00:24:46.028> and<00:24:46.108> she<00:24:46.428> read<00:24:46.669> for<00:24:46.909> an<00:24:47.133> hour<00:24:47.454> with<00:24:47.630> us<00:24:47.951> every<00:24:48.271> day.

00:24:49.073 --> 00:24:50.309
And<00:24:49.234> this<00:24:49.458> is<00:24:49.635> for<00:24:49.795> no<00:24:50.116> pay.

00:24:50.759 --> 00:24:55.654
This<00:24:50.983> is<00:24:51.144> for<00:24:51.561> no,<00:24:52.428> no<00:24:52.765> benefit<00:24:53.327> to<00:24:53.551> her<00:24:54.354> other<00:24:54.531> than<00:24:54.707> seeing<00:24:55.157> us<00:24:55.397> grow.

00:24:55.879 --> 00:24:57.035
And<00:24:55.975> so<00:24:56.280> I'm<00:24:56.376> forever<00:24:56.697> thankful.

00:24:57.083 --> 00:25:01.770
I'm<00:24:57.163> still<00:24:57.661> in<00:24:57.821> touch<00:24:58.126> with<00:24:58.286> that<00:24:58.463> teacher<00:24:59.827> and<00:24:59.972> I<00:25:00.068> feel<00:25:00.325> like<00:25:00.550> she<00:25:00.790> just<00:25:00.935> took<00:25:01.111> a<00:25:01.176> chance<00:25:01.577> on<00:25:01.673> us.

00:25:01.834 --> 00:25:08.318
So<00:25:01.914> by<00:25:02.075> the<00:25:02.155> time<00:25:02.412> I<00:25:02.476> started<00:25:02.781> the<00:25:02.813> next<00:25:03.182> grade<00:25:03.423> level,<00:25:03.824> I<00:25:03.920> could<00:25:04.225> read<00:25:04.466> at<00:25:04.562> grade<00:25:04.948> level,<00:25:05.686> which<00:25:05.943> is<00:25:06.392> pretty<00:25:06.649> remarkable<00:25:07.532> in<00:25:07.644> a<00:25:07.692> few<00:25:07.997> months.

00:25:08.415 --> 00:25:12.347
And<00:25:08.575> really<00:25:08.961> it's<00:25:09.201> only<00:25:09.442> because<00:25:09.699> she<00:25:10.742> said,<00:25:11.047> hey,<00:25:11.240> I'm<00:25:11.368> going<00:25:11.545> to<00:25:11.609> take<00:25:11.705> a<00:25:11.786> chance<00:25:12.187> on<00:25:12.267> you.

00:25:12.428 --> 00:25:13.696
I<00:25:12.508> know<00:25:12.765> that<00:25:12.973> you<00:25:13.070> can<00:25:13.294> do<00:25:13.455> this.

00:25:14.033 --> 00:25:25.524
I<00:25:14.113> think<00:25:14.273> within<00:25:14.594> my<00:25:14.755> career<00:25:15.237> too,<00:25:15.622> there<00:25:15.863> have<00:25:16.039> been<00:25:16.200> people<00:25:16.681> who<00:25:16.842> have<00:25:17.002> said,<00:25:17.403> hey,<00:25:18.126> I<00:25:18.206> see<00:25:18.463> something<00:25:18.944> in<00:25:19.073> you<00:25:19.715> and<00:25:19.940> And<00:25:20.373> even<00:25:20.549> though<00:25:20.758> you<00:25:20.918> haven't<00:25:21.319> done<00:25:21.480> this<00:25:21.656> before,<00:25:22.122> I'm<00:25:22.282> going<00:25:22.459> to<00:25:22.523> take<00:25:22.683> a<00:25:22.699> chance<00:25:23.165> on<00:25:23.261> you<00:25:23.486> and<00:25:23.999> sort<00:25:24.288> of<00:25:24.384> bet<00:25:24.625> that<00:25:24.785> you<00:25:24.946> can<00:25:25.267> do<00:25:25.491> it.

00:25:25.588 --> 00:25:30.739
One<00:25:25.812> person<00:25:26.053> that<00:25:26.149> comes<00:25:26.374> to<00:25:26.470> mind<00:25:26.936> is<00:25:27.096> Brian<00:25:27.353> Roberts,<00:25:28.861> who<00:25:28.957> was<00:25:29.198> the<00:25:29.278> CFO<00:25:29.744> at<00:25:29.840> Lyft<00:25:30.065> for<00:25:30.257> a<00:25:30.321> while.

00:25:31.188 --> 00:25:32.343
He's<00:25:31.429> at<00:25:31.749> a16z<00:25:32.231> now.

00:25:32.953 --> 00:25:38.393

00:25:39.371 --> 00:25:41.522
And,<00:25:39.692> you<00:25:39.789> know,<00:25:39.949> he<00:25:40.029> would<00:25:40.190> push<00:25:40.334> me<00:25:40.495> pretty<00:25:40.735> hard<00:25:40.928> sometimes.
