# The quiet CEO

Somewhere in the middle of a meeting at Vector Solutions, Jonathan Cherins' phone will buzz. The message comes from a member of his executive team, one of several who have worked with him at other companies and know what he is trying to fix about himself. It says something like: you're doing it.

What he is doing is talking. Explaining. Telling a 26-year-old product manager how to solve a problem he solved 20 years ago.

"I'm at my best as a leader when I'm curious and not talking," Cherins told the CEO.com Podcast. "I'm at my worst when we're telling people what to do, and that's never a good sign."

This is an odd confession from a man whose owners hired him to move faster. Genstar Capital, a San Francisco private equity firm, [closed its purchase of a majority stake in Vector](https://www.vectorsolutions.com/resources/press-releases/genstar-capital-acquires-majority-stake-in-vector-solutions/?ref=ceo.com) on July 1, 2021, buying from Golden Gate Capital with Insight Partners investing alongside. The CEO at the time was Marc Scheipe. Six months later, Cherins had the job. He is candid about why. Genstar wanted the company to grow faster than it had been, a former colleague of his sat on the board, and the two started talking in the fall of 2021.

Cherins had worked for Genstar before. Twenty years earlier, he was at TravelClick, a hotel technology company in the firm's portfolio, where his [official biography](https://www.vectorsolutions.com/about-us/executive-team/?ref=ceo.com) credits him with a role in a run of record growth and profitability. Before that, he was at Dun & Bradstreet. Before that, he was a founding employee at Juno Online Services, which went public in 1999\. After TravelClick came Yext through its 2017 IPO, then three years as CEO of PuppySpot, an online marketplace for puppies. He is still on PuppySpot's board. He has a BA from Michigan, an MBA from Columbia, and lives in New Jersey with his wife and three kids.

None of those jobs had anything to do with firefighters.

Vector sells the training that fire departments, police agencies, schools, universities, and industrial employers are required by law to complete. Its origins are in continuing education for architects and engineers, under the name Red Vector, and the company grew by buying its way into adjacent regulated markets, most importantly fire safety through the acquisition of TargetSolutions. The logic, as Cherins describes it, is that a market where a governing body mandates training does not evaporate in a recession. It did not evaporate in the pandemic either.

What Genstar agreed to buy in 2021 served [more than 21,000 clients](https://www.gencap.com/genstar-capital-announces-agreement-to-acquire-majority-stake-in-vector-solutions-from-golden-gate-capital/?ref=ceo.com). Vector now says it has [more than 24,000](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/vector-solutions-expands-law-enforcement-training-access-through-integration-with-frontline-training-tracker-302697993.html?ref=ceo.com). Cherins put headcount at about 700 when he spoke with the podcast. The company does not publish a current figure, and third-party trackers disagree by a wide margin. Whatever growth has come has come mostly the way Vector has always grown: acquisitions, including Frontline Public Safety in 2025, followed by product integrations. This year alone Vector has [wired an incident-reporting tool to its learning system](https://www.vectorsolutions.com/resources/press-releases/vector-solutions-launches-ai-safety-training/?ref=ceo.com) so that a reported accident automatically assigns a corrective course, [launched a training catalog for 911 dispatchers](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/vector-solutions-launches-comprehensive-online-dispatch-training-catalog-for-emergency-communications-professionals-302824938.html?ref=ceo.com), and [connected TargetSolutions to its scheduling software](https://www.vectorsolutions.com/resources/newsroom/vector-solutions-advances-unified-agency-readiness-with-new-targetsolutions-and-vector-scheduling-integrations/?ref=ceo.com) so a fire chief building a shift can see who is certified for it.

So the question for a quiet CEO is whether listening scales.

Cherins thinks it does, and his answer starts with his first job out of college, selling classified ads in the back of a magazine in New York. Suit and tie, 100 calls a day, a yellow legal pad for a CRM. The company trained its reps in SPIN selling, a sequence of situation, problem, implication, and need-payoff questions. For a 21-year-old who [describes his younger self as an introverted computer nerd](https://medium.com/authority-magazine/social-impact-tech-jonathan-cherins-of-vector-solutions-on-how-their-technology-will-make-an-4f351ed277a1?ref=ceo.com), it was a forcing mechanism. You could not pitch. You had to ask.

He has run every job since on the same mechanism, and he has a theory of why it works. "If they own the answer by getting there on their own, it's in cement," he said. "If you give them the answer, it's met with cynicism."

The other half of his method is less intuitive for an introvert. He talks constantly, but on purpose. He plans each week on Friday afternoon, color codes his calendar, and books one-on-ones with each of his direct reports roughly every 10 days. He runs a weekly roundtable with 10 to 15 employees, half work and half culture, as a substitute for the hallway conversations that a distributed company no longer produces. He travels 50 to 60 percent of the time between Vector's hubs in Tampa, Cincinnati, Bloomington, and San Diego. Every communication that matters runs through a framework he learned years ago and calls ABC: who is the audience, what behavior do you want from them, and what content do they need. He uses it for a Post-it note before a hallway chat and for the board deck.

"People listen to you more than you think they do," he said. "They'll take a casual conversation, and it becomes a directive because it came from the CEO. So you have to be very careful with what comes out of your mouth and what comes out of your fingers."

He applies the same discipline upward. Board meetings, in his view, should contain no new information. Financials go out by email weeks ahead. He talks to individual directors often enough that nothing lands cold. "If you're not sure of an outcome of a board meeting before you start, you're going to fail," he said. The meeting itself is for the two or three choices where he needs the room to argue.

The clearest test of his approach came on the question every CEO got wrong in some direction after 2020\. When Cherins arrived, first-year retention at Vector was, in his words, horrible. He did not order everyone back. He did not go fully remote. He gave the decision to leaders by function rather than by city. Engineers mostly work from home. New sales reps are pushed into an office, because nobody learns what a good cold call sounds like alone in an apartment. He says attrition has since fallen to what he considers world-class levels, though he is honest that he does not know what it means for a generation building careers without the networks his came from.

Two things he said on the podcast deserve more attention than they got at the time.

The first is about AI. Vector maintains more than 7,800 content libraries, and Cherins acknowledges that machines can now produce training material faster and cheaper than the subject-matter experts Vector employs. He also acknowledges that the agencies mandating that training often do not want it. A firefighter completing a course wants to know it was written by someone who has fought a fire. "That's the issue that I don't think has an answer yet," he said. Vector's line since then, [as its commercial general manager Claire Epstein put it at ASSP 2026](https://ohsonline.com/articles/2026/06/29/vector-solutions-puts-responsible-ai-and-gamified-training-at-the-forefront-of-workplace-safety.aspx?ref=ceo.com), is that AI should make workers safer and never replace human judgment. That is a reasonable line. It is also a bet that customers will keep paying for the human part.

The second is about politics. Vector sells diversity, equity, and inclusion training, mostly to higher education. Cherins said plainly that purchasing decisions for that product now track the political climate of the state the customer sits in. Some states are buying. Some are not. Vector sells to both and does not editorialize. "If that is one of their goals, we can help them," he said. "And if that is not one of their goals, we respectfully understand that and we help them in other ways." It is the answer of a company that cannot afford to pick a side, and he did not pretend otherwise.

Cherins reads in alternation. Robert Caro's Lyndon Johnson volumes, then Sarah J. Maas. The fantasy is for airplanes and for his daughter in New York, who reads it too. His son at Purdue gets science fiction. He said he had lost his father in the year before the conversation, an advertising executive who talked pitches and personnel at the dinner table, and that the line he keeps coming back to is one of his father's: only morons are always at their best. The version [engraved on the plaque on his desk](https://medium.com/authority-magazine/social-impact-tech-jonathan-cherins-of-vector-solutions-on-how-their-technology-will-make-an-4f351ed277a1?ref=ceo.com) is politer. It says mediocre.

"In order to have a great day, you probably have to have a bad one," Cherins said.

Every CEO.com Podcast ends with the same question, built on the idea that the chances one gives are just as important as the chances one takes. Cherins named Larry Kutscher, [now CEO of MDVIP](https://medium.com/authority-magazine/social-impact-tech-jonathan-cherins-of-vector-solutions-on-how-their-technology-will-make-an-4f351ed277a1?ref=ceo.com), who hired him at Dun & Bradstreet out of business school, handed him a P&L when he was too young to have one, and held him to a standard he had never been held to before. He did not name Genstar. But it is hard to hear the story and not notice that the firm that took a chance on a sales executive at TravelClick two decades ago is the one that handed him this company, and that it is waiting, patiently or otherwise, to see whether the quiet approach produces the number.

00:00:16.526 --> 00:00:16.622
Sure.

00:00:17.007 --> 00:00:17.423
Thanks,<00:00:17.247> Clint.

00:00:17.568 --> 00:00:18.321
Super<00:00:17.744> happy<00:00:17.968> to<00:00:18.065> be<00:00:18.209> here.

00:00:18.866 --> 00:00:22.360
Vector<00:00:19.122> Solutions<00:00:20.052> is<00:00:20.148> an<00:00:20.373> e-learning<00:00:20.709> and<00:00:20.854> training<00:00:21.174> company<00:00:21.511> for<00:00:21.655> first<00:00:21.896> responders.

00:00:22.408 --> 00:00:36.876
So<00:00:22.633> we<00:00:22.793> provide<00:00:23.338> learning<00:00:23.595> management<00:00:23.995> software,<00:00:25.438> accredited<00:00:26.159> content,<00:00:27.669> risk<00:00:27.928> management<00:00:28.397> solutions<00:00:28.818> and<00:00:28.964> workflow<00:00:29.239> solutions<00:00:29.724> to<00:00:29.853> help,<00:00:30.355> number<00:00:30.662> one,<00:00:31.261> satisfy<00:00:31.811> their<00:00:32.280> training<00:00:32.701> needs<00:00:32.943> that<00:00:33.089> are<00:00:33.170> usually<00:00:33.494> mandated<00:00:33.914> by<00:00:34.011> a<00:00:34.076> governing<00:00:34.480> body,<00:00:34.885> and<00:00:34.966> secondly,<00:00:35.354> to<00:00:35.435> help<00:00:35.629> improve<00:00:36.001> productivity<00:00:36.422> and<00:00:36.519> safety.

00:00:37.654 --> 00:00:42.892
So<00:00:38.514> I've<00:00:38.838> been<00:00:38.936> at<00:00:39.017> the<00:00:39.098> company<00:00:39.665> a<00:00:39.746> little<00:00:39.973> bit<00:00:40.136> over<00:00:40.541> 2<00:00:40.784> years,<00:00:41.206> joined<00:00:41.465> in<00:00:41.676> January<00:00:42.179> of<00:00:42.276> '22.

00:00:44.539 --> 00:00:55.104
The<00:00:44.700> owners<00:00:44.894> of<00:00:44.959> the<00:00:45.040> company<00:00:45.347> is<00:00:45.444> a<00:00:45.460> company<00:00:45.686> called<00:00:45.831> Genstar<00:00:46.397> that<00:00:46.494> I<00:00:46.575> worked<00:00:46.801> for<00:00:48.513> 20<00:00:48.901> years<00:00:49.160> ago<00:00:49.418> at<00:00:49.547> a<00:00:49.563> company<00:00:49.870> called<00:00:50.048> TravelClick,<00:00:50.694> and<00:00:51.325> I've<00:00:51.421> been<00:00:51.583> in<00:00:51.745> sales<00:00:52.068> and<00:00:52.116> marketing<00:00:52.698> growth<00:00:52.940> roles<00:00:53.263> my<00:00:53.360> whole<00:00:53.490> life,<00:00:53.704> nothing<00:00:54.264> vertical<00:00:54.659> specific.

00:00:55.170 --> 00:00:56.405
I've<00:00:55.252> kind<00:00:55.417> of<00:00:55.499> bounced<00:00:55.812> around<00:00:55.993> a<00:00:56.059> little<00:00:56.241> bit.

00:00:57.046 --> 00:00:58.717
Spent<00:00:57.223> some<00:00:57.368> time<00:00:57.560> in<00:00:57.689> the<00:00:57.769> consumer<00:00:58.331> world.

00:00:59.215 --> 00:01:05.992
And<00:01:00.740> we<00:01:01.078> stayed<00:01:01.319> in<00:01:01.399> contact<00:01:01.977> and,<00:01:02.282> you<00:01:02.362> know,<00:01:02.459> they<00:01:02.603> bought<00:01:02.828> some<00:01:02.925> assets<00:01:03.326> and<00:01:03.471> were<00:01:03.567> really<00:01:03.808> interested<00:01:04.209> in<00:01:04.290> getting<00:01:04.948> to<00:01:05.093> grow<00:01:05.237> a<00:01:05.253> little<00:01:05.478> bit<00:01:05.558> faster.

00:01:06.056 --> 00:01:12.127
And<00:01:06.522> one<00:01:06.699> of<00:01:07.100> my<00:01:07.405> peers<00:01:07.887> was<00:01:08.064> on<00:01:08.144> the<00:01:08.289> board<00:01:08.401> of<00:01:08.465> directors<00:01:08.947> and<00:01:09.044> we<00:01:09.124> hooked<00:01:09.333> up,<00:01:09.911> Kais<00:01:10.216> fall<00:01:10.473> '21,<00:01:11.019> and<00:01:11.115> we<00:01:11.196> started<00:01:11.437> talking<00:01:11.742> about<00:01:11.918> it.

00:01:12.641 --> 00:01:14.825
And<00:01:12.898> I<00:01:12.962> love<00:01:14.151> this<00:01:14.392> opportunity.

00:01:14.890 --> 00:01:15.548
I<00:01:14.906> love<00:01:15.131> the<00:01:15.211> company.

00:01:15.612 --> 00:01:21.426
It's<00:01:16.720> a<00:01:16.881> rare<00:01:17.218> thing<00:01:18.182> to<00:01:18.343> be<00:01:18.503> able<00:01:18.824> to,<00:01:19.290> you<00:01:19.370> know,<00:01:19.531> provide<00:01:20.270> income<00:01:20.655> for<00:01:20.816> so<00:01:20.976> many<00:01:21.217> people.

00:01:21.474 --> 00:01:23.209
We<00:01:21.539> have<00:01:21.619> about<00:01:21.812> 700<00:01:22.277> employees<00:01:22.695> at<00:01:22.823> the<00:01:22.904> company.

00:01:23.562 --> 00:01:29.792
And<00:01:23.642> at<00:01:23.723> the<00:01:23.803> same<00:01:24.108> time<00:01:25.072> do<00:01:25.312> good<00:01:26.035> and<00:01:26.099> be<00:01:26.196> able<00:01:26.436> to<00:01:26.517> explain<00:01:26.950> to<00:01:27.079> your<00:01:27.159> friends,<00:01:27.496> your<00:01:27.641> family,<00:01:27.994> your<00:01:28.139> children<00:01:29.246> what<00:01:29.487> you<00:01:29.584> do.

00:01:30.387 --> 00:01:40.230
I've<00:01:30.531> had<00:01:31.270> a<00:01:31.334> bunch<00:01:31.511> of<00:01:31.575> jobs<00:01:31.767> in<00:01:31.832> my<00:01:31.992> career,<00:01:32.169> probably<00:01:32.394> 6<00:01:32.651> or<00:01:32.715> 7,<00:01:33.518> and<00:01:33.598> trying<00:01:33.839> to<00:01:33.919> explain,<00:01:34.786> you<00:01:34.818> know,<00:01:35.188> in-depth<00:01:35.669> location<00:01:36.167> management<00:01:36.665> software<00:01:37.291> or<00:01:37.452> credit<00:01:37.853> rating<00:01:38.239> agencies<00:01:38.801> to<00:01:38.881> your<00:01:39.041> 6-year-old<00:01:39.700> is<00:01:39.844> challenging.

00:01:40.326 --> 00:01:45.609
But,<00:01:40.952> hi,<00:01:41.370> we<00:01:41.450> help<00:01:41.691> keep<00:01:41.868> the<00:01:42.028> firemen<00:01:42.430> safe<00:01:42.847> or<00:01:42.992> the<00:01:43.618> law<00:01:43.714> enforcement<00:01:44.260> officers<00:01:44.613> safe<00:01:44.999> and<00:01:45.079> productive.

00:01:46.380 --> 00:01:47.648
It<00:01:46.508> rolls<00:01:46.749> off<00:01:46.829> the<00:01:46.926> tongue<00:01:47.086> a<00:01:47.102> little<00:01:47.263> easier.

00:01:48.596 --> 00:01:48.740
Yeah.

00:01:48.836 --> 00:01:51.261
And<00:01:48.933> it's<00:01:49.174> like<00:01:49.398> you're<00:01:49.495> doing<00:01:49.736> something<00:01:50.442> worthwhile,<00:01:50.940> right?

00:01:51.390 --> 00:01:54.083
Something<00:01:51.582> with<00:01:52.127> meaning<00:01:52.544> inside<00:01:52.848> of<00:01:52.944> it,<00:01:53.041> which<00:01:53.425> is<00:01:53.666> always<00:01:53.970> great.

00:01:54.147 --> 00:01:54.515
Not<00:01:54.307> that<00:01:54.403> the<00:01:54.467> other—.

00:01:54.515 --> 00:01:55.637
The<00:01:54.547> mission<00:01:54.932> is<00:01:55.044> a<00:01:55.108> huge<00:01:55.429> win.

00:01:56.231 --> 00:01:58.042
Yeah,<00:01:56.471> the<00:01:56.551> mission<00:01:56.872> has<00:01:57.032> huge<00:01:57.417> wins<00:01:57.737> for<00:01:57.898> us.

00:01:58.138 --> 00:02:02.803
You<00:01:58.170> know,<00:01:58.331> it's<00:01:58.715> in<00:01:59.020> fulfilling<00:01:59.437> work<00:02:00.302> and<00:02:00.543> recruiting<00:02:01.104> talent<00:02:01.601> and<00:02:01.745> retaining<00:02:02.306> talent.

00:02:03.989 --> 00:02:07.307
And,<00:02:04.550> you<00:02:04.630> know,<00:02:06.009> you<00:02:06.169> have<00:02:06.330> stressful<00:02:06.682> moments<00:02:07.051> at<00:02:07.115> work.

00:02:07.356 --> 00:02:07.868
We<00:02:07.452> all<00:02:07.612> do.

00:02:07.997 --> 00:02:08.830
You<00:02:08.029> know,<00:02:08.157> they're<00:02:08.237> not<00:02:08.397> all<00:02:08.510> that<00:02:08.654> way.

00:02:08.894 --> 00:02:25.918
But,<00:02:09.119> you<00:02:09.151> know,<00:02:09.359> when<00:02:09.455> you're<00:02:09.616> sitting<00:02:09.856> there<00:02:10.081> trying<00:02:10.257> to<00:02:10.321> do<00:02:10.433> something<00:02:10.818> and<00:02:10.882> you<00:02:11.058> know<00:02:11.780> that<00:02:11.860> what<00:02:12.020> you're<00:02:12.165> doing<00:02:12.437> is<00:02:12.581> going<00:02:12.678> to<00:02:12.806> keep,<00:02:13.623> you<00:02:13.687> know,<00:02:13.784> a<00:02:13.864> fellow<00:02:14.104> American<00:02:14.521> safe<00:02:14.986> or,<00:02:15.531> you<00:02:15.595> know,<00:02:15.707> a<00:02:15.787> worker<00:02:16.108> from<00:02:16.268> hurting<00:02:16.493> themselves<00:02:17.615> or<00:02:17.871> a<00:02:17.951> student<00:02:18.513> from,<00:02:18.897> you<00:02:18.929> know,<00:02:19.138> getting<00:02:19.394> into<00:02:19.635> trouble<00:02:20.035> by<00:02:20.276> getting<00:02:20.516> in<00:02:20.596> the<00:02:20.677> wrong<00:02:20.901> crowds<00:02:21.318> or,<00:02:21.703> you<00:02:21.735> know,<00:02:21.863> use<00:02:21.975> drugs<00:02:22.264> the<00:02:22.344> wrong<00:02:22.520> way<00:02:22.680> or<00:02:23.145> alcohol<00:02:23.306> abuse,<00:02:24.107> you,<00:02:24.604> you<00:02:24.732> feel<00:02:24.989> good<00:02:25.101> about<00:02:25.325> the<00:02:25.405> work<00:02:25.646> you're<00:02:25.726> doing.

00:02:25.966 --> 00:02:35.039
So<00:02:26.127> it's,<00:02:26.367> it's<00:02:26.511> incredibly<00:02:27.008> rewarding<00:02:27.489> to<00:02:27.633> have<00:02:27.874> that<00:02:28.050> kind<00:02:28.226> of<00:02:28.371> Venn<00:02:28.611> diagram<00:02:29.236> of<00:02:29.717> the<00:02:29.877> opportunity<00:02:30.855> for<00:02:30.999> so<00:02:31.112> many<00:02:31.336> people<00:02:31.657> to<00:02:31.801> do<00:02:31.961> well<00:02:32.138> and<00:02:32.282> pay<00:02:32.442> their<00:02:32.602> bills<00:02:32.859> at<00:02:32.939> the<00:02:33.019> same<00:02:33.179> time,<00:02:33.885> you<00:02:33.917> know,<00:02:34.061> put<00:02:34.301> good<00:02:34.526> out<00:02:34.558> into<00:02:34.798> the<00:02:34.862> world.

00:02:35.119 --> 00:02:36.882
So,<00:02:35.568> uh,<00:02:35.808> feel<00:02:35.968> very<00:02:36.209> fortunate<00:02:36.610> to<00:02:36.706> be<00:02:36.770> here.

00:02:37.668 --> 00:02:43.614
How<00:02:37.764> did<00:02:37.892> the<00:02:37.988> company<00:02:38.389> land<00:02:38.774> on<00:02:39.030> first<00:02:39.351> responders<00:02:40.457> and<00:02:41.178> education<00:02:41.755> and<00:02:41.899> like<00:02:42.140> that<00:02:42.476> as<00:02:42.637> the<00:02:42.733> market<00:02:43.101> that<00:02:43.182> you<00:02:43.278> could<00:02:43.358> go<00:02:43.518> to?

00:02:43.662 --> 00:02:50.619
Because<00:02:43.983> as<00:02:44.079> you<00:02:44.945> know<00:02:45.346> very<00:02:45.602> well,<00:02:45.762> there's<00:02:45.923> a<00:02:46.067> lot<00:02:46.227> of<00:02:46.323> like<00:02:46.564> learning<00:02:46.884> platforms<00:02:47.766> and<00:02:47.910> education<00:02:48.343> platforms<00:02:48.952> for<00:02:49.192> all<00:02:49.305> sorts<00:02:49.689> of<00:02:49.770> different<00:02:50.090> sectors.

00:02:51.613 --> 00:02:52.671
Why<00:02:51.917> first<00:02:52.174> responders?

00:02:52.735 --> 00:02:53.889
Why<00:02:53.216> focus<00:02:53.617> on<00:02:53.697> that?

00:02:54.723 --> 00:02:54.979
Sure.

00:02:55.059 --> 00:02:58.073
Well,<00:02:55.540> you<00:02:55.620> know,<00:02:55.685> the<00:02:55.781> learning<00:02:56.021> management<00:02:56.502> system<00:02:56.967> world<00:02:57.159> can<00:02:57.304> get<00:02:57.464> commoditized.

00:02:58.121 --> 00:02:58.907
It's<00:02:58.201> just<00:02:58.426> a<00:02:58.506> platform.

00:02:58.971 --> 00:03:00.590
Like,<00:02:59.083> as<00:02:59.211> you<00:02:59.291> saw,<00:02:59.404> there's<00:02:59.564> lots<00:02:59.724> of<00:02:59.804> solutions<00:03:00.349> out<00:03:00.494> there.

00:03:00.975 --> 00:03:02.770
So<00:03:01.055> I<00:03:01.215> wish<00:03:01.391> I<00:03:01.455> could<00:03:01.552> tell<00:03:01.712> you<00:03:01.792> I<00:03:01.872> was<00:03:01.968> the<00:03:02.097> founder<00:03:02.289> of<00:03:02.353> the<00:03:02.433> company.

00:03:02.914 --> 00:03:03.459
Definitely<00:03:03.155> not.

00:03:03.716 --> 00:03:11.827
So<00:03:03.796> the<00:03:03.876> company<00:03:04.197> was<00:03:04.357> founded<00:03:04.838> years<00:03:05.158> ago,<00:03:05.864> uh,<00:03:06.040> in<00:03:06.120> architecture,<00:03:06.537> engineering,<00:03:06.922> construction,<00:03:07.483> a<00:03:07.563> company<00:03:07.803> called<00:03:08.028> Red<00:03:08.204> Vector,<00:03:08.925> doing<00:03:09.246> licensing<00:03:09.823> state<00:03:10.192> by<00:03:10.288> state<00:03:10.753> for<00:03:11.490> workers.

00:03:11.891 --> 00:03:21.926
And<00:03:11.971> then<00:03:12.612> through<00:03:12.853> both<00:03:13.029> organic<00:03:13.494> growth<00:03:14.039> and<00:03:14.215> through<00:03:14.600> mergers<00:03:14.921> and<00:03:14.985> acquisition<00:03:15.883> started<00:03:16.203> to,<00:03:16.604> you<00:03:16.684> know,<00:03:17.085> the<00:03:17.181> thesis<00:03:17.646> around,<00:03:18.303> okay,<00:03:18.784> what<00:03:18.960> are<00:03:19.105> the<00:03:19.329> accreditations<00:03:19.922> and<00:03:20.050> certifications<00:03:20.708> people<00:03:20.980> need<00:03:21.189> to<00:03:21.333> do<00:03:21.445> their<00:03:21.653> jobs?

00:03:21.990 --> 00:03:28.250
And<00:03:22.070> it<00:03:22.102> start<00:03:22.391> the<00:03:22.487> next<00:03:22.760> Our<00:03:22.824> first<00:03:22.904> big<00:03:23.193> push<00:03:23.418> was<00:03:23.578> into<00:03:24.397> actually<00:03:24.622> fire<00:03:24.879> safety<00:03:25.200> and<00:03:25.344> firemen<00:03:25.906> with<00:03:25.970> the<00:03:26.179> acquisition<00:03:26.693> of<00:03:26.789> Target<00:03:27.046> Solutions<00:03:27.560> many<00:03:27.769> years<00:03:27.945> ago.

00:03:28.716 --> 00:03:36.904
And<00:03:28.812> so<00:03:28.973> then<00:03:29.133> the<00:03:29.278> thesis<00:03:29.920> kind<00:03:30.177> of<00:03:30.241> evolved<00:03:30.562> into,<00:03:30.819> okay,<00:03:31.060> where<00:03:31.285> are<00:03:31.381> there<00:03:31.542> markets<00:03:32.007> that<00:03:32.087> are<00:03:32.184> highly<00:03:32.649> regulated<00:03:33.211> that<00:03:33.372> you<00:03:33.532> have<00:03:33.789> to<00:03:33.950> do<00:03:34.656> training<00:03:34.993> and<00:03:35.074> certification?

00:03:37.064 --> 00:03:51.418
Endeavor<00:03:37.546> creates<00:03:38.028> true<00:03:38.429> recession-proof<00:03:39.168> businesses,<00:03:40.035> but<00:03:41.094> even<00:03:41.319> in<00:03:41.576> periods<00:03:41.881> of<00:03:42.282> like<00:03:42.443> COVID<00:03:42.780> as<00:03:42.860> an<00:03:42.941> example,<00:03:43.968> those<00:03:44.209> emergency<00:03:44.771> services,<00:03:45.493> those<00:03:45.670> frontline<00:03:46.152> workers,<00:03:46.617> teachers,<00:03:47.195> people<00:03:47.837> in<00:03:47.902> the<00:03:47.998> commercial<00:03:48.415> market,<00:03:48.865> public<00:03:49.106> safety,<00:03:49.523> you<00:03:49.619> know,<00:03:50.149> those,<00:03:50.406> those<00:03:50.647> things<00:03:50.888> kept<00:03:51.129> going.

00:03:52.076 --> 00:03:53.968
It's<00:03:52.236> a<00:03:52.477> really<00:03:52.878> good<00:03:53.198> business<00:03:53.535> to<00:03:53.695> be<00:03:53.776> in.

00:03:54.882 --> 00:04:02.451
It's<00:03:55.363> obviously<00:03:55.924> easy<00:03:56.101> to<00:03:56.165> understand<00:03:56.806> state<00:03:57.063> by<00:03:57.159> state<00:03:57.448> what<00:03:57.544> the<00:03:57.688> regulations<00:03:58.330> are<00:03:58.651> in<00:03:58.811> commercial<00:03:59.533> markets,<00:04:00.014> what<00:04:00.174> they<00:04:00.270> are<00:04:00.431> in<00:04:00.511> education<00:04:00.976> markets,<00:04:01.313> what<00:04:01.457> they<00:04:01.553> are<00:04:01.633> in<00:04:01.794> public<00:04:02.098> safety.

00:04:02.916 --> 00:04:12.314
So<00:04:04.536> it<00:04:04.760> grew<00:04:05.081> organically<00:04:05.803> from<00:04:05.963> those<00:04:06.140> origination<00:04:06.925> points<00:04:07.791> and<00:04:07.872> we<00:04:07.904> just<00:04:08.112> kept<00:04:08.353> building<00:04:08.689> on<00:04:08.754> that<00:04:08.930> thesis<00:04:09.331> and<00:04:09.475> thesis<00:04:10.052> over<00:04:10.229> and<00:04:10.357> over<00:04:10.534> again<00:04:10.758> to<00:04:10.838> where<00:04:10.951> now<00:04:11.095> we're<00:04:11.319> in<00:04:11.416> those<00:04:11.656> three<00:04:11.897> markets.

00:04:12.378 --> 00:04:29.705
Again,<00:04:12.939> education,<00:04:13.564> both<00:04:13.885> K-12<00:04:14.318> and<00:04:14.446> higher<00:04:14.703> ed,<00:04:15.665> commercial<00:04:16.098> markets<00:04:16.451> like<00:04:16.948> AEC,<00:04:17.189> mining<00:04:17.413> and<00:04:17.590> gas,<00:04:18.552> Uh,<00:04:18.937> and<00:04:19.097> then,<00:04:19.354> um,<00:04:19.916> in<00:04:20.157> public<00:04:20.413> safety,<00:04:21.039> which<00:04:21.136> is<00:04:21.264> really<00:04:21.440> kind<00:04:21.601> of<00:04:22.387> law<00:04:22.548> enforcement,<00:04:23.270> then<00:04:23.366> cops,<00:04:24.313> fire,<00:04:25.196> and<00:04:25.276> then,<00:04:25.677> uh,<00:04:25.918> large<00:04:26.255> state<00:04:26.720> and<00:04:26.881> federal<00:04:27.153> agencies<00:04:28.180> like<00:04:28.341> TSA,<00:04:28.887> DOD,<00:04:29.224> things<00:04:29.448> like<00:04:29.609> that.

00:04:30.668 --> 00:04:31.952
What<00:04:30.812> is<00:04:30.909> the<00:04:30.989> sales<00:04:31.310> process<00:04:31.711> like?

00:04:32.754 --> 00:04:34.808
It<00:04:32.850> sounds<00:04:33.059> like<00:04:33.396> it<00:04:33.573> seems,<00:04:33.958> seems<00:04:34.198> like<00:04:34.295> it<00:04:34.327> would<00:04:34.439> be<00:04:34.600> long.

00:04:35.145 --> 00:04:36.012
You're<00:04:35.498> just<00:04:35.643> kind<00:04:35.803> of<00:04:35.835> selling.

00:04:36.124 --> 00:04:36.862
It<00:04:36.204> depends<00:04:36.670> actually.

00:04:36.927 --> 00:04:43.763
So<00:04:37.087> we,<00:04:37.328> since<00:04:37.793> we,<00:04:38.291> we,<00:04:38.676> we<00:04:38.756> talk<00:04:38.932> about<00:04:39.077> the<00:04:39.157> 3<00:04:39.334> different<00:04:39.639> verticals<00:04:40.136> we're<00:04:40.281> in,<00:04:40.377> we're<00:04:40.537> also,<00:04:41.243> you<00:04:41.275> know,<00:04:41.741> let's<00:04:42.126> use,<00:04:42.607> you<00:04:42.656> know,<00:04:42.768> Firehouse<00:04:43.185> as<00:04:43.265> an<00:04:43.330> example.

00:04:43.971 --> 00:04:44.485
Where<00:04:44.068> do<00:04:44.132> you<00:04:44.164> live,<00:04:44.373> Clint?

00:04:44.549 --> 00:04:45.207
You're<00:04:44.694> in<00:04:44.790> Utah,<00:04:45.095> right?

00:04:45.416 --> 00:04:45.608
Utah.

00:04:45.897 --> 00:04:45.993
Yep.

00:04:46.313 --> 00:04:46.826
Yeah,<00:04:46.778> right.

00:04:46.874 --> 00:04:53.783
So<00:04:47.500> your<00:04:47.676> local<00:04:47.997> firehouse<00:04:48.622> has<00:04:48.878> one<00:04:49.119> set<00:04:49.343> of<00:04:49.439> training<00:04:49.760> needs,<00:04:49.984> then<00:04:50.080> there's<00:04:50.305> the<00:04:50.465> Utah<00:04:50.722> State<00:04:51.603> Fire<00:04:51.844> Department,<00:04:52.549> and<00:04:52.709> as<00:04:52.806> well<00:04:52.966> as<00:04:53.046> the<00:04:53.110> Utah<00:04:53.367> Sheriff's.

00:04:54.168 --> 00:04:58.448
The<00:04:54.649> larger<00:04:55.210> the<00:04:55.835> entity,<00:04:57.198> the<00:04:57.358> longer<00:04:57.695> the<00:04:57.775> sales<00:04:58.031> cycle.

00:04:59.843 --> 00:05:03.802
But,<00:05:00.019> you<00:05:00.115> know,<00:05:00.324> the<00:05:00.356> sales<00:05:00.612> cycles,<00:05:00.965> they<00:05:01.061> all<00:05:01.141> have<00:05:01.286> very<00:05:01.462> similar<00:05:02.985> characteristics.

00:05:04.251 --> 00:05:10.214
Usually<00:05:05.069> our<00:05:05.165> salespeople<00:05:05.774> are<00:05:06.030> in<00:05:06.175> the<00:05:06.207> markets<00:05:06.816> as<00:05:06.976> experts,<00:05:07.553> and<00:05:07.633> they've<00:05:07.858> been<00:05:07.954> in<00:05:08.034> those<00:05:08.114> spaces<00:05:08.579> for<00:05:08.643> a<00:05:08.675> year<00:05:09.236> building<00:05:09.621> relationships.

00:05:10.343 --> 00:05:15.312
We<00:05:10.423> have<00:05:10.679> a<00:05:10.823> go-to-market<00:05:11.401> marketing<00:05:11.801> team<00:05:12.042> that<00:05:12.202> helps<00:05:12.443> develop<00:05:12.843> pipeline<00:05:13.885> and<00:05:14.029> create<00:05:14.366> leads<00:05:14.607> at<00:05:14.687> the<00:05:14.751> same<00:05:15.007> time.

00:05:15.729 --> 00:05:26.550
It's<00:05:16.194> what<00:05:16.354> happens<00:05:16.899> from<00:05:17.091> the<00:05:17.520> transactional<00:05:18.099> kind<00:05:18.276> of<00:05:18.308> smaller<00:05:18.822> entity<00:05:19.305> to<00:05:19.562> somewhat<00:05:20.592> mid-market<00:05:21.171> into<00:05:21.396> enterprise<00:05:21.879> where<00:05:21.975> the<00:05:22.056> sales<00:05:22.281> cycles<00:05:22.764> take<00:05:23.005> on<00:05:23.584> a<00:05:23.664> different<00:05:24.018> length,<00:05:25.580> obviously,<00:05:25.790> and<00:05:25.871> a<00:05:25.887> different<00:05:26.178> motion.

00:05:26.987 --> 00:05:32.340
Thought<00:05:27.213> leadership<00:05:27.633> pieces<00:05:28.280> and<00:05:28.426> kind<00:05:28.604> of,<00:05:29.073> you<00:05:29.105> know,<00:05:29.574> more<00:05:29.978> software<00:05:30.383> integration,<00:05:31.030> customization<00:05:31.774> at<00:05:31.903> the<00:05:32.000> high<00:05:32.243> end.

00:05:32.404 --> 00:05:36.273
So,<00:05:33.035> uh,<00:05:33.294> we<00:05:33.520> operate<00:05:34.086> kind<00:05:34.248> of<00:05:34.410> both<00:05:34.523> in<00:05:34.895> the<00:05:34.960> short-term,<00:05:35.268> medium-term,<00:05:35.803> and<00:05:35.949> long-term.

00:05:37.652 --> 00:05:40.361
How<00:05:37.749> do<00:05:37.814> you<00:05:37.911> decide<00:05:38.301> how<00:05:38.398> to<00:05:38.495> spend<00:05:38.722> your<00:05:38.804> time<00:05:39.128> each<00:05:39.290> day<00:05:39.923> as<00:05:40.020> the<00:05:40.101> CEO?

00:05:40.490 --> 00:05:42.258
I<00:05:40.507> mean,<00:05:40.734> there's<00:05:40.961> a<00:05:41.058> million<00:05:41.399> things<00:05:41.626> that<00:05:41.739> you<00:05:41.869> could<00:05:41.966> be<00:05:42.129> doing.

00:05:43.102 --> 00:05:44.546
How<00:05:43.199> do<00:05:43.247> you<00:05:43.359> decide<00:05:43.728> which<00:05:43.904> one<00:05:44.000> to<00:05:44.129> focus<00:05:44.465> on?

00:05:45.251 --> 00:05:47.833
When<00:05:45.379> I'm<00:05:45.588> doing<00:05:45.844> a<00:05:45.909> good<00:05:46.133> job,<00:05:46.486> I'm<00:05:46.646> in<00:05:46.775> charge<00:05:47.175> of<00:05:47.272> my<00:05:47.432> calendar.

00:05:47.913 --> 00:05:50.800
And<00:05:47.977> when<00:05:48.025> I'm<00:05:48.218> doing<00:05:48.410> a<00:05:48.555> bad<00:05:48.795> job<00:05:48.971> of<00:05:49.052> that,<00:05:49.260> my<00:05:49.597> calendar<00:05:50.062> is<00:05:50.158> in<00:05:50.238> charge<00:05:50.559> of<00:05:50.703> me.

00:05:50.896 --> 00:05:57.631
So<00:05:51.698> I<00:05:51.906> usually<00:05:52.323> try<00:05:53.365> Friday<00:05:53.927> afternoons<00:05:55.113> to<00:05:55.450> plan<00:05:55.851> out<00:05:56.075> the<00:05:56.108> next<00:05:56.476> couple<00:05:56.797> weeks,<00:05:57.519> right?

00:05:57.711 --> 00:06:01.239
So,<00:05:57.936> and<00:05:58.080> I,<00:05:58.272> I'm<00:05:58.417> a,<00:05:58.818> I<00:05:58.898> have<00:05:58.962> a<00:05:58.978> little<00:05:59.138> bit<00:05:59.235> of<00:05:59.315> OCD,<00:05:59.700> so<00:05:59.748> I'll<00:05:59.924> use<00:06:00.100> color<00:06:00.405> coding<00:06:00.662> on<00:06:00.742> my<00:06:00.902> calendar.

00:06:01.319 --> 00:06:03.644
So<00:06:01.448> I<00:06:01.544> think<00:06:01.720> about<00:06:02.265> what<00:06:02.426> are<00:06:02.458> the<00:06:02.522> things<00:06:02.891> that<00:06:02.971> I'm<00:06:03.147> worried<00:06:03.468> about?

00:06:03.709 --> 00:06:06.483
What<00:06:03.853> are<00:06:03.885> the<00:06:03.965> things<00:06:04.334> that<00:06:04.430> I'm<00:06:04.655> concerned<00:06:05.088> about<00:06:05.392> moving<00:06:05.633> the<00:06:05.713> company<00:06:06.114> forward?

00:06:06.916 --> 00:06:09.321
And<00:06:07.060> I<00:06:07.156> try<00:06:07.397> to<00:06:07.493> make<00:06:07.718> sure<00:06:07.878> that<00:06:08.102> those<00:06:08.423> things<00:06:08.680> are<00:06:08.824> represented.

00:06:09.802 --> 00:06:15.893
There's<00:06:10.027> a<00:06:10.043> certain<00:06:10.283> amount<00:06:10.507> of<00:06:10.604> regular<00:06:11.085> cadence<00:06:11.549> things<00:06:11.726> that<00:06:11.870> happen,<00:06:12.207> like<00:06:12.447> I'm<00:06:12.607> having<00:06:12.928> a<00:06:12.992> one-on-one<00:06:13.489> with<00:06:13.585> each<00:06:13.729> of<00:06:13.810> my<00:06:13.954> key<00:06:14.130> people<00:06:14.515> probably<00:06:14.851> every<00:06:15.076> 10<00:06:15.204> days<00:06:15.493> or<00:06:15.573> so.

00:06:16.214 --> 00:06:19.965
We<00:06:16.310> do<00:06:16.438> have<00:06:16.535> an<00:06:16.615> executive<00:06:17.080> team<00:06:17.256> meeting<00:06:18.378> in<00:06:18.474> some<00:06:18.763> form<00:06:18.955> or<00:06:19.003> another<00:06:19.324> every<00:06:19.660> week.

00:06:20.302 --> 00:06:23.956
And<00:06:20.366> then<00:06:20.526> I<00:06:20.622> actually<00:06:20.798> spend<00:06:21.023> a<00:06:21.039> lot<00:06:21.199> of<00:06:21.247> time<00:06:21.424> on<00:06:21.488> the<00:06:21.568> road,<00:06:21.792> Clint,<00:06:21.969> seeing<00:06:22.209> customers<00:06:23.011> and<00:06:23.203> seeing<00:06:23.507> team<00:06:23.700> members.

00:06:24.052 --> 00:06:25.928
Post-COVID,<00:06:25.094> we're<00:06:25.191> pretty<00:06:25.351> distributed.

00:06:26.313 --> 00:06:28.877
We<00:06:26.393> have<00:06:26.553> 4<00:06:26.794> offices,<00:06:27.194> but<00:06:27.339> we<00:06:27.371> have<00:06:27.451> a<00:06:27.515> lot<00:06:27.579> of<00:06:27.675> employees<00:06:28.156> around<00:06:28.380> the<00:06:28.477> country.

00:06:29.358 --> 00:06:40.329
And<00:06:29.422> so<00:06:29.503> I<00:06:30.064> go<00:06:30.304> out<00:06:30.416> of<00:06:30.576> my<00:06:30.865> way<00:06:31.426> to<00:06:31.538> make<00:06:31.763> sure<00:06:31.923> that<00:06:32.003> I<00:06:32.083> am<00:06:32.324> present<00:06:33.285> and<00:06:33.510> pull<00:06:33.766> people<00:06:34.327> and<00:06:34.472> issues<00:06:34.728> together<00:06:35.145> so<00:06:35.369> we're<00:06:35.482> not<00:06:35.754> always<00:06:36.572> No<00:06:36.716> offense<00:06:36.973> to<00:06:37.053> this,<00:06:37.294> but<00:06:37.439> on<00:06:37.535> a<00:06:37.551> screen,<00:06:38.017> looking<00:06:38.338> at<00:06:38.579> it,<00:06:38.980> being<00:06:39.141> across<00:06:39.446> the<00:06:39.542> table<00:06:39.799> from<00:06:40.024> each<00:06:40.168> other.

00:06:41.084 --> 00:06:46.334
So<00:06:41.613> that's<00:06:41.774> what,<00:06:41.935> that's<00:06:42.191> how<00:06:42.256> I<00:06:42.416> kind<00:06:42.593> of,<00:06:43.058> that<00:06:43.556> makes<00:06:43.781> me<00:06:43.942> plan<00:06:44.199> my<00:06:44.359> weeks<00:06:44.664> and<00:06:44.744> then<00:06:44.841> the<00:06:44.921> days<00:06:45.258> are<00:06:45.644> a<00:06:45.724> result<00:06:46.061> of<00:06:46.190> that.

00:06:47.169 --> 00:06:54.443
And<00:06:47.249> try<00:06:47.410> to<00:06:47.474> make<00:06:47.570> sure<00:06:47.715> I<00:06:47.875> leave<00:06:48.036> myself<00:06:48.357> space<00:06:49.401> to<00:06:49.497> think,<00:06:50.461> to<00:06:50.605> breathe,<00:06:51.007> and<00:06:51.167> to<00:06:52.853> be<00:06:52.949> flexible<00:06:53.592> at<00:06:53.752> what's<00:06:53.913> going<00:06:54.170> on.

00:06:54.940 --> 00:07:01.989
You<00:06:54.972> know,<00:06:55.021> especially<00:06:55.759> like<00:06:56.225> this<00:06:56.337> is<00:06:56.466> the<00:06:56.562> end<00:06:56.642> of<00:06:56.723> a<00:06:56.787> quarter,<00:06:57.140> I'll<00:06:57.686> give<00:06:57.847> myself<00:06:58.168> a<00:06:58.184> lot<00:06:58.328> more<00:06:58.473> flexibility<00:06:59.035> and<00:06:59.115> time<00:06:59.276> around<00:06:59.452> to<00:06:59.549> be<00:06:59.773> available<00:07:00.255> to<00:07:00.335> talk<00:07:00.496> to<00:07:00.640> customers<00:07:01.058> and<00:07:01.138> prospects,<00:07:01.604> things<00:07:01.764> like<00:07:01.941> that.

00:07:03.064 --> 00:07:03.593
What<00:07:03.128> do<00:07:03.160> you<00:07:03.369> read?

00:07:05.053 --> 00:07:10.089
I<00:07:05.373> alternate<00:07:05.935> between<00:07:07.939> light<00:07:08.340> reading<00:07:08.677> as<00:07:08.838> a<00:07:08.902> distraction<00:07:09.479> and<00:07:09.623> heavy<00:07:09.960> reading.

00:07:10.217 --> 00:07:16.825
So,<00:07:11.067> I'm<00:07:12.029> all—<00:07:12.270> usually<00:07:12.462> right<00:07:12.607> now,<00:07:13.024> it's<00:07:13.168> funny,<00:07:13.344> I<00:07:13.408> just<00:07:13.633> went<00:07:13.729> through<00:07:13.906> this<00:07:14.050> whole<00:07:14.371> process<00:07:14.772> with—<00:07:14.948> I<00:07:14.980> have<00:07:15.092> a<00:07:15.237> 24-year-old<00:07:15.798> daughter<00:07:16.119> who<00:07:16.199> lives<00:07:16.295> in<00:07:16.376> New<00:07:16.440> York<00:07:16.552> City.

00:07:17.161 --> 00:07:18.669
So,<00:07:17.258> you<00:07:17.322> just<00:07:17.498> went<00:07:17.659> through<00:07:17.803> all<00:07:17.883> the<00:07:17.963> Sarah<00:07:18.284> J.<00:07:18.396> Maas<00:07:18.573> books.

00:07:18.717 --> 00:07:20.144
I<00:07:18.733> don't<00:07:18.958> know<00:07:19.166> if<00:07:19.246> you<00:07:19.359> or<00:07:19.423> your<00:07:19.647> readers<00:07:19.888> know<00:07:20.064> them.

00:07:20.289 --> 00:07:20.642
Oh,<00:07:20.449> yeah.

00:07:20.786 --> 00:07:21.780
Court<00:07:20.962> of<00:07:21.107> Thorn<00:07:21.347> and<00:07:21.428> Roses.

00:07:21.828 --> 00:07:23.994
It's<00:07:22.053> complete<00:07:22.534> fantasy<00:07:23.208> escapism.

00:07:24.330 --> 00:07:25.614
It's<00:07:24.443> like<00:07:24.555> the<00:07:24.699> perfect<00:07:25.052> airplane<00:07:25.437> book.

00:07:25.758 --> 00:07:27.041
You<00:07:25.838> know,<00:07:25.982> you<00:07:26.143> take<00:07:26.319> your<00:07:26.383> mind<00:07:26.624> off<00:07:26.784> of<00:07:26.816> work.

00:07:27.105 --> 00:07:27.586
Those<00:07:27.217> are<00:07:27.346> perfect.

00:07:27.923 --> 00:07:35.630
And<00:07:28.003> then,<00:07:28.115> I'll<00:07:28.244> go<00:07:28.404> bounce<00:07:28.725> back<00:07:28.901> and<00:07:29.046> forth<00:07:29.286> between<00:07:30.232> either<00:07:30.409> biographies<00:07:31.500> or<00:07:31.860> historical<00:07:32.520> fiction,<00:07:33.100> like<00:07:33.240> stuff<00:07:33.300> like<00:07:33.520> Erik<00:07:33.800> Larson,<00:07:34.860> Devil<00:07:34.920> in<00:07:35.060> the<00:07:35.140> White<00:07:35.280> City.

00:07:35.840 --> 00:07:40.280
And<00:07:35.860> I<00:07:36.080> do<00:07:36.580> a<00:07:36.780> lot<00:07:36.980> of<00:07:37.960> biographies<00:07:38.540> of<00:07:38.860> people<00:07:39.160> who<00:07:39.280> did<00:07:39.520> great<00:07:39.780> things.

00:07:40.280 --> 00:07:41.120
I<00:07:40.340> just<00:07:40.420> love<00:07:40.600> those<00:07:40.840> stories.

00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:48.020
So<00:07:41.320> I<00:07:41.600> try<00:07:41.780> to<00:07:41.880> alternate<00:07:42.180> back<00:07:42.400> and<00:07:42.600> forth,<00:07:42.840> but<00:07:43.000> there's<00:07:43.140> been<00:07:43.340> a<00:07:43.460> lot<00:07:43.600> of<00:07:44.200> dragons<00:07:45.120> and<00:07:45.520> fairies<00:07:45.820> the<00:07:46.000> last<00:07:46.220> 6<00:07:46.380> months,<00:07:46.640> 'cause<00:07:46.700> there's<00:07:46.880> a<00:07:47.060> lot<00:07:47.100> of<00:07:47.200> books<00:07:47.360> in<00:07:47.540> those<00:07:47.620> series.

00:07:48.480 --> 00:07:49.790
Yeah,<00:07:48.600> that's<00:07:48.940> incredible.

00:07:49.820 --> 00:07:58.080
I<00:07:50.000> haven't<00:07:50.240> really<00:07:50.620> gotten<00:07:50.920> into<00:07:51.520> the<00:07:51.900> fantasy<00:07:52.280> and<00:07:52.820> sci-fi<00:07:52.821> as<00:07:53.060> much<00:07:53.220> as<00:07:53.460> I<00:07:53.580> want<00:07:53.980> to,<00:07:55.180> but<00:07:55.280> reading<00:07:56.900> things<00:07:57.140> like<00:07:57.360> George<00:07:57.600> R.R.

00:07:58.080 --> 00:07:59.000
Martin<00:07:58.081> and<00:07:58.380> things<00:07:58.660> like<00:07:58.860> that.

00:07:59.000 --> 00:07:59.840
Yeah,<00:07:59.200> sure.

00:07:59.840 --> 00:08:00.140
Same.

00:08:00.140 --> 00:08:05.970
Well,<00:08:00.340> the<00:08:00.500> thing<00:08:00.640> for<00:08:00.760> me<00:08:00.960> is<00:08:01.080> I<00:08:01.140> have<00:08:01.320> 3<00:08:01.480> different<00:08:01.500> children<00:08:01.520> who<00:08:01.540> have<00:08:01.560> 3<00:08:03.400> totally<00:08:03.673> different,<00:08:04.315> you<00:08:05.279> know,<00:08:05.360> call<00:08:05.504> it<00:08:05.585> psyches.

00:08:06.067 --> 00:08:08.991
Like,<00:08:06.565> I<00:08:06.629> have<00:08:06.741> a<00:08:06.806> sports<00:08:07.127> kid<00:08:07.770> who<00:08:07.914> only<00:08:08.075> wants<00:08:08.252> to<00:08:08.316> talk<00:08:08.509> about<00:08:08.669> sports.

00:08:09.360 --> 00:08:13.843
I<00:08:09.376> have<00:08:09.473> a<00:08:09.521> sci-fi<00:08:10.019> kid<00:08:10.340> who's<00:08:10.501> a<00:08:10.742> sophomore<00:08:11.224> at<00:08:11.369> Purdue<00:08:11.706> studying<00:08:12.011> engineering,<00:08:12.750> and<00:08:12.815> I<00:08:12.831> have<00:08:12.911> my<00:08:13.056> daughter<00:08:13.216> who<00:08:13.377> reads<00:08:13.554> fantasy.

00:08:13.891 --> 00:08:18.792
So<00:08:14.020> I<00:08:14.180> do<00:08:14.357> try<00:08:14.678> to<00:08:15.562> do<00:08:15.867> some<00:08:16.189> form<00:08:16.365> of<00:08:16.510> infotainment<00:08:17.088> with<00:08:17.265> each<00:08:17.474> of<00:08:17.570> them<00:08:17.667> because<00:08:18.052> it<00:08:18.117> keeps<00:08:18.293> us<00:08:18.438> connected.

00:08:18.856 --> 00:08:22.166
Like,<00:08:19.579> Maya,<00:08:19.884> who's<00:08:20.061> my<00:08:20.205> daughter,<00:08:20.479> she'll<00:08:20.623> be<00:08:20.768> reading<00:08:21.025> this<00:08:21.202> and<00:08:21.282> I'll<00:08:21.410> be<00:08:21.491> traveling<00:08:21.716> the<00:08:21.812> country.

00:08:22.230 --> 00:08:25.186
We<00:08:22.294> can<00:08:22.374> talk<00:08:22.487> about<00:08:22.696> a<00:08:22.776> book<00:08:23.033> and<00:08:23.114> it<00:08:23.178> keeps<00:08:23.371> us<00:08:23.499> connected<00:08:23.917> now<00:08:23.997> that<00:08:24.142> we're<00:08:24.238> all<00:08:24.319> not<00:08:24.544> in<00:08:24.624> the<00:08:24.704> same<00:08:24.945> house.

00:08:25.684 --> 00:08:29.717
Um,<00:08:26.182> so<00:08:26.552> it's,<00:08:26.793> uh,<00:08:27.355> fantasy<00:08:27.677> is,<00:08:28.335> it<00:08:28.480> is<00:08:28.576> exactly<00:08:28.962> that,<00:08:29.155> it's<00:08:29.315> escapism.

00:08:30.066 --> 00:08:34.919
You<00:08:30.086> know,<00:08:30.263> we<00:08:30.424> all<00:08:30.504> have<00:08:31.066> intensity<00:08:31.612> in<00:08:31.644> our<00:08:31.788> lives,<00:08:32.029> and<00:08:32.190> sometimes<00:08:32.575> you<00:08:32.672> just,<00:08:33.378> you<00:08:33.410> want<00:08:33.555> to<00:08:33.635> read<00:08:33.812> about<00:08:34.197> Ned<00:08:34.341> Stark,<00:08:34.759> right?

00:08:34.984 --> 00:08:37.938
You<00:08:35.016> just<00:08:35.241> want<00:08:35.899> to<00:08:36.188> go<00:08:36.445> and<00:08:37.087> read<00:08:37.248> about<00:08:37.472> dragons.

00:08:38.067 --> 00:08:41.679
So,<00:08:38.516> um,<00:08:39.014> it's,<00:08:39.255> it's<00:08:39.656> nice<00:08:39.817> to<00:08:40.138> take<00:08:40.298> an<00:08:40.379> escape<00:08:40.796> on<00:08:40.844> an<00:08:40.941> airplane<00:08:41.262> sometimes.

00:08:42.546 --> 00:08:43.076
Yeah,<00:08:42.707> that's<00:08:43.028> it.

00:08:43.253 --> 00:08:45.950
From<00:08:43.413> the<00:08:43.815> biography<00:08:44.313> standpoint,<00:08:44.875> I<00:08:45.019> totally<00:08:45.340> relate<00:08:45.661> to<00:08:45.693> you<00:08:45.838> there.

00:08:46.079 --> 00:08:49.467
I<00:08:46.223> got<00:08:46.544> way<00:08:46.882> deep<00:08:47.203> maybe<00:08:47.428> like<00:08:47.620> a<00:08:47.749> year<00:08:47.925> ago<00:08:48.391> on<00:08:48.487> like<00:08:48.728> Winston<00:08:49.113> Churchill.

00:08:49.531 --> 00:08:51.056
I<00:08:49.579> was<00:08:49.692> reading<00:08:49.916> like<00:08:50.093> everything<00:08:50.655> possibly.

00:08:51.137 --> 00:08:52.068
That's<00:08:51.377> a<00:08:51.458> lot<00:08:51.715> of<00:08:51.779> those.

00:08:52.405 --> 00:08:55.054
Uh,<00:08:52.807> actually<00:08:53.947> it<00:08:54.011> was<00:08:54.268> Teddy<00:08:54.589> Roosevelt.

00:08:56.177 --> 00:08:59.097
Yeah,<00:08:56.739> I<00:08:56.835> think<00:08:56.979> I've<00:08:57.140> read,<00:08:57.461> I<00:08:57.493> know<00:08:57.637> I<00:08:57.781> read<00:08:58.022> one<00:08:58.198> of<00:08:58.263> the<00:08:58.359> Roosevelt<00:08:58.760> books.

00:08:59.321 --> 00:09:03.828
You<00:08:59.401> know,<00:08:59.530> it's<00:08:59.626> funny,<00:08:59.722> I<00:08:59.866> get<00:09:00.043> fixated<00:09:00.428> on<00:09:00.588> authors<00:09:01.085> like<00:09:01.246> that<00:09:01.406> guy<00:09:01.631> Robert<00:09:01.887> Caro,<00:09:02.353> who<00:09:02.449> did<00:09:02.609> the<00:09:02.689> Lyndon<00:09:03.010> Johnson<00:09:03.491> books.

00:09:03.876 --> 00:09:07.758
There's<00:09:04.053> a<00:09:04.117> guy,<00:09:04.919> A.<00:09:05.015> Scott<00:09:05.336> Berg,<00:09:05.576> who<00:09:05.657> wrote<00:09:05.817> a<00:09:05.881> great<00:09:06.058> one<00:09:06.218> about<00:09:07.180> Lindbergh.

00:09:08.768 --> 00:09:13.660
You<00:09:08.800> know,<00:09:09.185> I<00:09:09.265> definitely<00:09:09.586> browse<00:09:09.907> the<00:09:09.987> bestseller<00:09:10.468> list<00:09:10.693> for<00:09:10.853> biographies<00:09:11.591> and<00:09:11.751> like<00:09:12.056> who<00:09:12.217> won<00:09:12.377> the<00:09:12.457> Pulitzer<00:09:12.954> and<00:09:13.099> things<00:09:13.259> like<00:09:13.500> that.

00:09:14.061 --> 00:09:23.669

00:09:37.550 --> 00:09:42.445
Just<00:09:37.663> amazing<00:09:38.230> story<00:09:38.700> about<00:09:38.943> somebody<00:09:39.187> who<00:09:39.284> started<00:09:39.608> off<00:09:39.770> trying<00:09:40.013> to<00:09:40.175> do<00:09:40.337> good<00:09:41.456> and<00:09:41.618> power<00:09:42.023> corrupts.

And<00:09:43.785> if<00:09:43.930> you're<00:09:44.092> a<00:09:44.350> history<00:09:44.754> buff,<00:09:45.303> how<00:09:45.545> they<00:09:45.706> built<00:09:46.029> the<00:09:46.191> roads<00:09:46.837> and<00:09:46.998> bridges<00:09:47.499> and<00:09:47.741> things<00:09:47.967> around<00:09:48.145> New<00:09:48.209> York<00:09:48.403> City,<00:09:48.855> it's<00:09:49.211> a<00:09:49.340> fascinating<00:09:49.840> book.

00:09:50.262 --> 00:09:50.487
Fast.

00:09:51.611 --> 00:10:01.744
What<00:09:51.708> do<00:09:51.772> you<00:09:51.949> take<00:09:52.270> from<00:09:52.575> reading<00:09:53.073> these<00:09:53.249> types<00:09:53.490> of<00:09:53.554> things<00:09:53.875> and<00:09:54.502> implement<00:09:54.919> in<00:09:55.064> your<00:09:55.224> own<00:09:55.401> leadership<00:09:55.818> style<00:09:56.364> in<00:09:56.766> your<00:09:56.991> company<00:09:57.408> and<00:09:57.633> how<00:09:57.970> you<00:09:58.452> interact<00:09:58.917> with<00:09:59.014> your<00:09:59.094> employees<00:10:00.298> and<00:10:00.379> who<00:10:00.603> you<00:10:00.780> are<00:10:00.941> as<00:10:01.085> the<00:10:01.117> CEO?

00:10:03.108 --> 00:10:04.361
Yeah,<00:10:03.590> it's<00:10:03.686> a<00:10:03.751> good<00:10:03.911> question.

00:10:04.778 --> 00:10:06.208
You<00:10:04.811> know,<00:10:04.955> sometimes<00:10:05.356> it<00:10:05.421> comes<00:10:05.662> from<00:10:05.918> books.

00:10:06.288 --> 00:10:09.274
You<00:10:06.400> know,<00:10:06.625> I'm<00:10:06.721> inherently<00:10:08.568> an<00:10:08.712> introvert.

00:10:10.013 --> 00:10:12.711
I've<00:10:10.158> learned<00:10:11.539> to<00:10:11.683> talk<00:10:12.117> and<00:10:12.245> ask<00:10:12.406> questions.

00:10:12.759 --> 00:10:15.778
And<00:10:13.225> my<00:10:13.369> first<00:10:13.626> job,<00:10:14.140> so<00:10:14.188> I'm<00:10:14.573> gonna<00:10:14.670> answer<00:10:14.830> your<00:10:14.975> question,<00:10:15.312> but<00:10:15.392> kind<00:10:15.553> of<00:10:15.585> not.

00:10:16.356 --> 00:10:20.258
My<00:10:16.436> first<00:10:16.757> job,<00:10:17.078> I<00:10:17.159> was<00:10:17.271> selling<00:10:17.865> classified<00:10:18.363> ads<00:10:18.604> in<00:10:18.668> the<00:10:18.764> back<00:10:19.021> of<00:10:19.102> a<00:10:19.166> magazine<00:10:19.712> right<00:10:19.872> outta<00:10:19.985> school.

00:10:20.996 --> 00:10:28.918
And<00:10:21.894> they<00:10:22.038> taught<00:10:22.295> us<00:10:22.455> a<00:10:22.872> sales<00:10:23.321> technique<00:10:23.642> called<00:10:23.818> SPIN<00:10:24.219> Selling:<00:10:24.845> Situation<00:10:25.342> Questions,<00:10:25.887> Problem<00:10:26.208> Questions,<00:10:26.705> Implication<00:10:27.266> Questions,<00:10:27.908> and<00:10:27.988> Need-Payoff<00:10:28.469> Questions.

00:10:29.511 --> 00:10:39.101
And<00:10:29.656> as<00:10:29.752> an<00:10:29.832> introvert,<00:10:30.233> it<00:10:30.313> was<00:10:30.474> a<00:10:30.554> forcing<00:10:31.115> mechanism<00:10:32.077> to<00:10:32.302> ask<00:10:32.462> questions,<00:10:33.921> to<00:10:34.018> not<00:10:34.402> talk,<00:10:35.104> to<00:10:35.124> not<00:10:35.284> talk<00:10:35.461> about<00:10:35.685> your<00:10:35.766> products,<00:10:36.166> to<00:10:36.247> not<00:10:36.391> talk<00:10:36.567> about<00:10:37.129> what<00:10:37.273> you<00:10:37.305> want<00:10:37.449> to<00:10:37.514> talk<00:10:37.674> about,<00:10:37.914> but<00:10:38.075> just<00:10:38.331> be<00:10:38.572> curious.

00:10:39.678 --> 00:10:44.265
And<00:10:39.759> I<00:10:39.919> think<00:10:40.031> if<00:10:40.160> you<00:10:40.256> take<00:10:40.641> that,<00:10:41.779> that<00:10:42.020> is<00:10:42.164> probably<00:10:42.421> the<00:10:42.565> driving<00:10:42.902> force<00:10:43.206> of<00:10:43.303> who<00:10:43.447> I<00:10:43.607> am<00:10:43.720> as<00:10:43.864> a<00:10:43.944> leader.

00:10:44.345 --> 00:10:55.789
And<00:10:44.489> it<00:10:44.586> really<00:10:44.826> stuck<00:10:45.131> with<00:10:45.307> me<00:10:45.387> from<00:10:45.564> when<00:10:45.660> I<00:10:45.708> was<00:10:45.852> 21<00:10:46.750> to<00:10:48.034> You<00:10:48.067> know,<00:10:48.179> you<00:10:48.259> go<00:10:48.356> into<00:10:48.516> a<00:10:48.532> meeting<00:10:48.837> and,<00:10:49.078> you<00:10:49.158> know,<00:10:49.239> you<00:10:49.303> have<00:10:49.576> 700<00:10:49.945> people<00:10:50.106> working<00:10:50.427> for<00:10:50.587> you,<00:10:50.684> or<00:10:50.764> you're<00:10:50.908> going<00:10:51.069> to<00:10:51.149> a<00:10:51.246> prospect,<00:10:51.824> and<00:10:52.450> it's<00:10:52.610> impossible<00:10:53.012> to<00:10:53.060> know<00:10:53.188> everybody,<00:10:54.296> everything,<00:10:55.019> and<00:10:55.099> every<00:10:55.324> solution.

00:10:55.902 --> 00:10:58.214
And<00:10:55.982> even<00:10:56.142> as<00:10:56.239> a<00:10:56.303> seller<00:10:56.672> or<00:10:56.865> somebody<00:10:57.170> going<00:10:57.427> in<00:10:57.507> a<00:10:57.587> go-to-market<00:10:58.133> role.

00:10:58.695 --> 00:11:01.409
But<00:10:58.776> what<00:10:58.872> you<00:10:58.968> can<00:10:59.338> be<00:10:59.755> in<00:10:59.980> every<00:11:00.397> opportunity<00:11:00.879> is<00:11:01.039> curious.

Like,<00:11:02.806> well,<00:11:03.111> tell<00:11:03.287> us<00:11:03.432> more<00:11:03.673> about<00:11:04.315> what<00:11:04.427> you're<00:11:04.556> trying<00:11:04.684> to<00:11:04.748> get<00:11:04.893> done.

00:11:05.134 --> 00:11:06.530
What<00:11:05.278> is<00:11:05.374> the<00:11:05.455> problem<00:11:05.840> you're<00:11:06.001> trying<00:11:06.177> to<00:11:06.338> solve?

00:11:06.980 --> 00:11:25.145
And<00:11:07.044> I<00:11:07.141> think<00:11:07.285> that<00:11:07.526> works<00:11:07.783> as<00:11:07.943> a<00:11:08.104> leader,<00:11:08.907> whether<00:11:09.131> you're<00:11:09.613> a<00:11:09.645> first-time<00:11:10.111> manager<00:11:10.448> or<00:11:10.689> CEO,<00:11:12.021> board<00:11:12.198> member,<00:11:12.824> and<00:11:14.703> As<00:11:15.120> just<00:11:15.303> an<00:11:15.386> employee,<00:11:15.886> as<00:11:15.953> a<00:11:15.970> father,<00:11:17.830> probably<00:11:18.185> that's<00:11:18.572> the<00:11:18.734> driving<00:11:19.218> influence<00:11:19.783> of<00:11:19.880> my<00:11:20.106> leadership<00:11:20.462> style<00:11:20.849> is<00:11:21.011> to<00:11:22.222> ask<00:11:22.448> questions,<00:11:23.175> open-ended<00:11:23.659> questions,<00:11:24.176> and<00:11:24.305> then<00:11:24.466> try<00:11:24.579> to<00:11:24.725> be<00:11:24.806> quiet.

00:11:25.936 --> 00:11:26.711
And<00:11:26.000> you<00:11:26.097> learn<00:11:26.323> so<00:11:26.582> much.

00:11:27.633 --> 00:11:28.766
There's<00:11:27.908> something<00:11:28.119> kind<00:11:28.296> of<00:11:28.361> beautiful.

00:11:28.830 --> 00:11:29.930
I'm<00:11:28.927> an<00:11:29.008> introvert<00:11:29.574> as<00:11:29.736> well.

00:11:30.610 --> 00:11:39.732
And<00:11:31.030> it<00:11:31.176> does<00:11:31.370> seem<00:11:31.758> like<00:11:34.103> that<00:11:34.346> in<00:11:34.508> some<00:11:34.750> ways<00:11:35.058> is<00:11:35.236> an<00:11:35.317> advantage<00:11:35.867> because<00:11:36.764> you<00:11:37.417> are<00:11:37.987> inherently<00:11:38.901> built<00:11:39.227> to<00:11:39.390> listen.

00:11:39.797 --> 00:11:40.988
Like<00:11:40.026> you<00:11:40.270> want<00:11:40.515> to<00:11:40.760> listen.

00:11:41.835 --> 00:11:47.137
And<00:11:41.995> listening<00:11:42.413> is<00:11:42.799> such<00:11:43.683> a<00:11:43.763> big<00:11:44.068> part<00:11:44.566> of<00:11:44.711> leadership<00:11:45.675> and<00:11:46.013> not<00:11:46.254> talking<00:11:46.736> that<00:11:46.961> much.

00:11:47.378 --> 00:11:49.451
You<00:11:47.523> just<00:11:47.700> want<00:11:47.812> to<00:11:48.021> get<00:11:48.166> as<00:11:48.262> much<00:11:48.503> information<00:11:48.905> as<00:11:49.066> possible.

00:11:50.496 --> 00:11:52.263
How<00:11:50.592> important<00:11:50.978> has<00:11:51.155> listening<00:11:51.556> been<00:11:51.862> for<00:11:52.038> you?

00:11:53.227 --> 00:11:55.815
I<00:11:53.244> mean,<00:11:54.288> it's<00:11:54.850> a<00:11:54.931> tension,<00:11:55.413> I<00:11:55.477> would<00:11:55.638> say.

00:11:55.895 --> 00:11:57.952
I<00:11:56.216> totally<00:11:57.084> agree<00:11:57.196> with<00:11:57.325> everything<00:11:57.566> you<00:11:57.662> just<00:11:57.855> said.

00:11:58.000 --> 00:11:59.607
It<00:11:58.145> is<00:11:58.611> the<00:11:58.643> number<00:11:59.012> one<00:11:59.253> quality.

00:11:59.671 --> 00:12:01.037
It<00:11:59.816> makes<00:12:00.217> everything<00:12:00.555> work<00:12:00.716> better.

00:12:01.985 --> 00:12:06.340
As<00:12:02.146> you<00:12:02.242> start<00:12:02.547> to<00:12:02.724> accumulate<00:12:03.528> years<00:12:03.769> of<00:12:03.865> experience,<00:12:05.199> you<00:12:05.295> think<00:12:05.536> you<00:12:05.633> know<00:12:05.841> the<00:12:06.018> answer.

00:12:07.223 --> 00:12:15.851
And<00:12:07.303> you<00:12:07.463> want<00:12:07.672> to<00:12:08.586> give<00:12:08.746> the<00:12:08.971> answer,<00:12:09.211> whether<00:12:09.468> it<00:12:09.772> be<00:12:09.853> to—<00:12:10.013> you're<00:12:10.093> talking<00:12:10.302> to<00:12:10.414> a<00:12:10.430> 25-year-old,<00:12:11.071> a<00:12:11.152> 30-year-old<00:12:11.537> who's<00:12:11.713> like<00:12:11.873> an<00:12:11.953> SDR,<00:12:13.060> early<00:12:13.236> product<00:12:13.557> person,<00:12:13.958> and<00:12:14.006> you<00:12:14.102> want<00:12:14.215> to<00:12:14.263> just<00:12:14.439> tell<00:12:14.760> them<00:12:14.985> how<00:12:15.161> to<00:12:15.321> do<00:12:15.482> things.

00:12:16.428 --> 00:12:25.553
So<00:12:16.524> that<00:12:16.749> tension<00:12:17.230> exists<00:12:17.647> because<00:12:18.433> you<00:12:18.513> know<00:12:18.753> you<00:12:18.850> should<00:12:19.010> be<00:12:19.154> quiet<00:12:19.395> and<00:12:19.475> ask<00:12:19.635> questions,<00:12:20.678> and<00:12:20.758> you<00:12:20.854> know<00:12:21.015> that<00:12:21.512> the<00:12:21.640> person<00:12:21.961> you're<00:12:22.121> engaging<00:12:22.602> with<00:12:23.420> needs<00:12:23.661> to<00:12:23.805> grow<00:12:24.142> into<00:12:24.446> that<00:12:24.687> answer<00:12:25.024> on<00:12:25.168> their<00:12:25.345> own.

00:12:26.130 --> 00:12:29.386
People,<00:12:26.547> if<00:12:26.628> they<00:12:26.852> own<00:12:26.964> the<00:12:27.173> answer<00:12:27.429> by<00:12:27.574> getting<00:12:27.814> there<00:12:27.911> on<00:12:27.991> their<00:12:28.135> own,<00:12:28.247> it's<00:12:28.953> in<00:12:29.049> cement.

00:12:29.835 --> 00:12:33.010
If<00:12:29.915> you<00:12:30.060> give<00:12:30.172> them<00:12:30.316> the<00:12:30.460> answer,<00:12:30.942> it's<00:12:31.599> met<00:12:31.759> with<00:12:31.920> cynicism.

00:12:33.540 --> 00:12:36.138
So,<00:12:34.390> you<00:12:34.486> know,<00:12:34.807> that's<00:12:35.031> kind<00:12:35.175> of<00:12:35.224> the<00:12:35.304> way<00:12:35.448> I<00:12:35.528> think<00:12:35.705> about<00:12:35.993> it.

00:12:37.357 --> 00:12:42.078
I'm<00:12:37.453> at<00:12:37.614> my<00:12:37.855> best<00:12:38.722> as<00:12:38.834> a<00:12:38.963> leader<00:12:39.782> when<00:12:39.958> I'm<00:12:40.183> curious<00:12:41.387> and<00:12:41.532> not<00:12:41.708> talking.

00:12:42.254 --> 00:12:44.534
I'm<00:12:42.415> at<00:12:42.511> my<00:12:42.736> worst<00:12:43.073> when<00:12:43.298> we're<00:12:43.475> telling<00:12:43.796> people<00:12:44.101> what<00:12:44.277> to<00:12:44.374> do.

00:12:44.599 --> 00:12:45.899
And<00:12:44.679> that's<00:12:45.241> never<00:12:45.482> a<00:12:45.626> good<00:12:45.803> sign.

00:12:45.979 --> 00:12:46.959
And<00:12:46.028> you<00:12:46.124> try<00:12:46.284> to<00:12:46.349> catch<00:12:46.525> yourself.

00:12:47.392 --> 00:12:50.234
And<00:12:47.473> I<00:12:47.633> use<00:12:47.890> buddies<00:12:48.532> on<00:12:48.613> the<00:12:48.677> executive<00:12:49.175> team<00:12:49.415> and<00:12:49.560> people<00:12:49.801> I<00:12:49.961> work<00:12:50.138> with.

00:12:50.299 --> 00:12:57.139
And<00:12:51.262> many<00:12:51.487> people<00:12:51.663> on<00:12:51.744> my<00:12:51.904> team<00:12:52.081> I've<00:12:52.209> worked<00:12:52.370> with<00:12:52.530> before,<00:12:52.803> so<00:12:53.028> they<00:12:53.189> know<00:12:54.297> the<00:12:54.393> things<00:12:54.650> I'm<00:12:54.794> trying<00:12:55.100> to<00:12:55.260> improve<00:12:55.662> on,<00:12:55.774> the<00:12:55.902> things<00:12:56.095> I'm<00:12:56.240> trying<00:12:56.480> to<00:12:56.561> get<00:12:56.785> better<00:12:57.026> at.

00:12:57.187 --> 00:13:01.827
And<00:12:57.669> we<00:12:57.749> have<00:12:57.909> little<00:12:58.407> codes<00:12:58.889> to<00:12:58.985> like,<00:12:59.210> hey,<00:12:59.467> somebody<00:12:59.756> will<00:12:59.852> text<00:13:00.173> me<00:13:00.238> or<00:13:00.334> Teams<00:13:00.655> me<00:13:00.800> during<00:13:00.976> the<00:13:01.040> meeting,<00:13:01.249> like,<00:13:01.362> you're<00:13:01.458> doing<00:13:01.715> it.

00:13:01.940 --> 00:13:04.056
You<00:13:02.020> should<00:13:02.646> maybe<00:13:03.383> ask<00:13:03.543> a<00:13:03.607> good<00:13:03.768> question.

00:13:04.104 --> 00:13:11.668
So<00:13:04.569> having<00:13:04.825> that<00:13:04.921> kind<00:13:05.130> of<00:13:05.162> support<00:13:06.348> around<00:13:06.764> you<00:13:07.069> to—<00:13:07.213> for<00:13:07.373> people<00:13:07.614> to<00:13:07.710> help<00:13:08.014> you<00:13:08.255> in<00:13:08.351> those<00:13:08.671> areas<00:13:08.912> of<00:13:08.992> development<00:13:09.472> that<00:13:09.553> we're<00:13:09.697> working<00:13:10.033> on,<00:13:10.210> it's<00:13:10.674> a,<00:13:10.915> it's<00:13:11.075> a<00:13:11.139> huge<00:13:11.540> plus.

00:13:12.902 --> 00:13:16.091
How<00:13:13.078> are<00:13:13.302> you<00:13:13.863> thinking<00:13:14.280> about<00:13:14.584> artificial<00:13:15.081> intelligence<00:13:15.642> in<00:13:15.786> your<00:13:15.947> world?

00:13:16.203 --> 00:13:17.693
I<00:13:16.347> think<00:13:16.523> that<00:13:16.844> that's<00:13:17.068> kind<00:13:17.181> of<00:13:17.245> fascinating.

00:13:17.805 --> 00:13:30.948
I<00:13:17.886> imagine,<00:13:18.591> um,<00:13:19.729> a<00:13:19.873> lot<00:13:20.049> of<00:13:20.514> the<00:13:20.610> videos<00:13:21.171> that<00:13:21.315> you<00:13:21.876> make<00:13:22.132> and<00:13:22.212> the<00:13:22.357> training<00:13:22.773> modules<00:13:23.270> and<00:13:23.398> things<00:13:23.607> like<00:13:23.799> that<00:13:24.135> are<00:13:24.296> all,<00:13:24.921> you<00:13:24.953> know,<00:13:25.321> human<00:13:25.562> beings,<00:13:26.603> but<00:13:26.924> in<00:13:27.004> the<00:13:27.180> future<00:13:28.463> It's<00:13:28.623> entirely<00:13:29.104> possible<00:13:29.505> that<00:13:29.649> they<00:13:30.628> won't<00:13:30.852> be.

00:13:31.814 --> 00:13:33.979
Yeah,<00:13:32.071> it's,<00:13:32.472> it's<00:13:32.696> a<00:13:32.857> yin<00:13:33.017> and<00:13:33.097> a<00:13:33.194> yang,<00:13:33.594> I<00:13:33.611> would<00:13:33.739> say.

00:13:34.300 --> 00:13:36.898
So<00:13:34.477> obviously<00:13:34.877> it's<00:13:35.038> a,<00:13:35.375> it's<00:13:36.144> the<00:13:36.225> topic<00:13:36.561> du<00:13:36.706> jour.

00:13:37.043 --> 00:13:38.165
It's<00:13:37.283> everywhere<00:13:37.524> around<00:13:37.909> us.

00:13:38.566 --> 00:13:43.858
When<00:13:38.710> you<00:13:38.791> think<00:13:38.983> about<00:13:39.368> where<00:13:39.673> AI<00:13:40.170> is<00:13:40.491> impactful<00:13:40.972> to<00:13:41.116> our<00:13:41.292> business,<00:13:41.758> obviously<00:13:42.078> you<00:13:42.174> think<00:13:42.399> can<00:13:42.495> start<00:13:42.736> with<00:13:43.057> content<00:13:43.409> development.

00:13:43.939 --> 00:13:52.214
We<00:13:44.019> have<00:13:44.179> over<00:13:44.356> 7,800<00:13:46.023> content<00:13:46.424> libraries,<00:13:47.611> uh,<00:13:47.932> that<00:13:48.172> different<00:13:48.589> parts<00:13:48.830> of<00:13:48.894> our<00:13:49.055> vertical<00:13:49.375> customer<00:13:49.792> base<00:13:50.097> use<00:13:50.289> and<00:13:50.434> consume<00:13:50.979> to,<00:13:51.236> to<00:13:51.380> satisfy<00:13:51.797> their<00:13:51.957> needs.

00:13:52.903 --> 00:13:53.609
And<00:13:52.968> it<00:13:53.000> cuts<00:13:53.224> both<00:13:53.401> ways.

00:13:53.946 --> 00:14:00.546
AI<00:13:54.123> is<00:13:54.267> a<00:13:54.348> tremendous<00:13:54.990> tool<00:13:55.327> to<00:13:56.291> produce<00:13:56.772> incredibly<00:13:57.479> engaging<00:13:57.977> content<00:13:58.442> at<00:13:58.539> a<00:13:58.603> lower<00:13:58.860> cost<00:13:59.342> and<00:13:59.422> in<00:13:59.502> a<00:13:59.567> more<00:13:59.679> engaging<00:14:00.305> way.

00:14:01.108 --> 00:14:11.899
At<00:14:01.188> the<00:14:01.269> same<00:14:01.590> time,<00:14:01.911> some<00:14:02.088> of<00:14:02.152> the<00:14:02.232> institutions<00:14:02.875> that<00:14:02.955> are<00:14:03.099> requiring<00:14:03.918> training<00:14:05.428> are<00:14:05.669> very<00:14:05.926> wary<00:14:06.247> of<00:14:06.343> it<00:14:06.953> and<00:14:07.050> want<00:14:07.178> to<00:14:07.226> make<00:14:07.515> sure<00:14:07.596> that<00:14:07.756> the<00:14:07.853> content<00:14:08.270> is<00:14:08.415> not<00:14:08.896> developed<00:14:09.378> by<00:14:09.764> computers,<00:14:10.342> but<00:14:10.438> developed<00:14:10.807> by<00:14:10.920> subject<00:14:11.305> matter<00:14:11.546> experts.

00:14:11.948 --> 00:14:19.142
And<00:14:12.413> whether<00:14:12.558> that<00:14:12.734> be<00:14:12.767> in<00:14:12.895> law<00:14:13.040> enforcement<00:14:13.569> or<00:14:13.650> fire<00:14:13.923> or<00:14:14.115> education,<00:14:14.677> people<00:14:14.918> who<00:14:14.967> have<00:14:15.240> done<00:14:15.464> those<00:14:15.721> jobs<00:14:16.139> as<00:14:16.283> opposed<00:14:16.604> to,<00:14:17.311> you<00:14:17.343> know,<00:14:17.729> a<00:14:17.793> bunch<00:14:17.969> of<00:14:18.034> workers<00:14:18.291> just<00:14:18.451> typing<00:14:18.756> content<00:14:19.094> in.

00:14:19.190 --> 00:14:27.005
So<00:14:19.656> we<00:14:19.816> view<00:14:20.057> it<00:14:20.202> as<00:14:20.298> a<00:14:20.378> major<00:14:21.085> asset<00:14:21.486> to<00:14:21.647> us<00:14:21.904> as<00:14:21.984> we<00:14:22.241> engage<00:14:22.867> both<00:14:23.028> in<00:14:23.172> content<00:14:23.510> development<00:14:24.376> software<00:14:24.713> development<00:14:25.354> and<00:14:25.498> creating<00:14:25.755> more<00:14:25.851> efficiencies<00:14:26.396> the<00:14:26.476> way<00:14:26.637> we<00:14:26.717> do<00:14:26.877> this.

00:14:27.438 --> 00:14:36.977
As<00:14:27.582> well<00:14:27.759> as,<00:14:28.304> you<00:14:28.336> know,<00:14:28.384> obviously<00:14:28.961> there's<00:14:29.186> vulnerable<00:14:29.586> to<00:14:29.683> the<00:14:30.163> two<00:14:30.324> guys<00:14:30.580> or<00:14:30.644> gals<00:14:30.901> in<00:14:31.029> a<00:14:31.045> garage<00:14:31.382> who<00:14:31.446> want<00:14:31.590> to<00:14:31.622> start<00:14:31.927> something<00:14:32.328> and<00:14:32.488> don't<00:14:32.712> have<00:14:32.889> that<00:14:33.033> heavy<00:14:33.370> intense<00:14:33.835> cost<00:14:34.235> to<00:14:34.316> get<00:14:34.572> going<00:14:34.845> because<00:14:35.358> they<00:14:35.454> could<00:14:36.239> build<00:14:36.416> something<00:14:36.656> with<00:14:36.800> AI.

00:14:37.073 --> 00:15:01.193
So<00:14:37.297> we're<00:14:37.955> spending<00:14:38.243> a<00:14:38.259> lot<00:14:38.516> of<00:14:38.580> time,<00:14:38.900> money,<00:14:39.462> and<00:14:39.606> energy<00:14:39.943> thinking<00:14:40.263> about<00:14:40.504> it,<00:14:40.648> a<00:14:40.664> lot<00:14:40.824> of<00:14:40.904> time<00:14:41.465> in<00:14:41.946> integrating<00:14:42.652> it<00:14:43.133> into<00:14:43.373> our<00:14:43.534> businesses,<00:14:44.095> but<00:14:44.207> doing<00:14:44.511> it<00:14:44.592> in<00:14:44.672> conjunction<00:14:45.233> with<00:14:45.377> our<00:14:45.473> customers<00:14:46.515> and<00:14:46.595> talking<00:14:46.980> to<00:14:47.060> our<00:14:47.157> customers<00:14:47.654> about<00:14:47.942> this<00:14:48.118> so<00:14:48.279> they<00:14:48.503> understand<00:14:50.042> it's<00:14:50.187> really<00:14:50.363> important<00:14:50.668> when<00:14:50.764> somebody<00:14:51.005> is<00:14:51.149> taking<00:14:51.888> a<00:14:51.968> learning<00:14:52.289> experience<00:14:52.834> to<00:14:53.091> know,<00:14:53.957> just<00:14:54.118> like<00:14:54.278> us<00:14:54.374> consuming<00:14:54.775> content<00:14:55.016> on<00:14:55.096> the<00:14:55.321> internet<00:14:55.578> or<00:14:55.642> wherever<00:14:55.915> we<00:14:56.043> do,<00:14:56.861> is<00:14:57.006> this<00:14:57.182> content<00:14:57.583> that<00:14:57.727> was<00:14:57.904> made<00:14:58.064> by<00:14:58.225> a<00:14:58.305> computer,<00:14:58.674> or<00:14:58.706> is<00:14:58.867> this<00:14:59.011> content<00:14:59.332> that<00:14:59.412> was<00:14:59.573> made<00:14:59.669> by<00:14:59.829> a<00:14:59.909> person<00:15:00.214> who's<00:15:00.391> done<00:15:00.535> this<00:15:00.712> job<00:15:00.936> before?

00:15:01.899 --> 00:15:06.231
And<00:15:02.396> I<00:15:02.493> think<00:15:03.279> that's<00:15:03.985> the,<00:15:04.482> the<00:15:04.707> issue<00:15:04.963> that<00:15:05.124> I<00:15:05.156> don't<00:15:05.284> think<00:15:05.429> has<00:15:05.541> an<00:15:05.685> answer<00:15:06.070> yet.

00:15:06.712 --> 00:15:12.761
So<00:15:06.824> it's<00:15:06.969> an<00:15:07.033> important<00:15:07.530> part<00:15:07.675> of<00:15:07.755> who<00:15:07.851> we<00:15:08.012> are,<00:15:08.637> it's<00:15:08.734> a<00:15:08.894> growing<00:15:09.295> part<00:15:09.472> of<00:15:09.536> who<00:15:09.680> we<00:15:09.841> are,<00:15:10.338> but<00:15:10.482> we,<00:15:10.819> we're<00:15:10.980> proceeding<00:15:11.381> enthusiastically<00:15:12.263> but<00:15:12.408> with<00:15:12.520> caution.

00:15:13.932 --> 00:15:19.463
It<00:15:13.964> does<00:15:14.189> seem<00:15:14.349> like<00:15:14.654> AI<00:15:15.552> like<00:15:15.857> the<00:15:16.017> value<00:15:17.235> is<00:15:17.395> going<00:15:17.556> to<00:15:17.700> come<00:15:17.860> from<00:15:18.101> those<00:15:18.421> who<00:15:18.582> use<00:15:18.774> it<00:15:18.902> as<00:15:18.998> a<00:15:19.143> tool.

00:15:19.640 --> 00:15:21.467
They<00:15:19.736> don't<00:15:19.960> use<00:15:20.137> it<00:15:20.217> as<00:15:20.425> the<00:15:20.666> end<00:15:20.906> product.

00:15:22.349 --> 00:15:31.246
And<00:15:22.605> it's<00:15:22.766> like<00:15:23.407> being<00:15:23.727> able<00:15:23.888> to<00:15:23.968> curate<00:15:24.849> and<00:15:24.994> have<00:15:25.811> really,<00:15:26.276> really<00:15:26.677> excellent<00:15:27.094> content<00:15:27.575> and<00:15:27.719> really<00:15:27.959> excellent<00:15:28.296> product<00:15:28.697> that,<00:15:29.482> you<00:15:29.514> know,<00:15:29.739> is<00:15:30.284> obviously<00:15:30.604> used<00:15:30.845> as<00:15:31.005> a<00:15:31.085> tool.

00:15:31.342 --> 00:15:40.046
You<00:15:31.422> kind<00:15:31.598> of<00:15:31.646> have<00:15:31.903> to<00:15:32.063> at<00:15:32.143> this<00:15:32.368> point,<00:15:33.185> but<00:15:33.682> it's<00:15:33.891> not<00:15:34.067> the<00:15:34.211> only<00:15:34.548> thing<00:15:34.724> because<00:15:35.654> like<00:15:35.814> you<00:15:35.910> said,<00:15:36.135> like<00:15:36.279> you<00:15:36.391> can,<00:15:37.113> you<00:15:37.273> can<00:15:37.513> tell<00:15:37.818> pretty<00:15:38.058> quickly<00:15:38.475> that<00:15:38.700> this<00:15:38.876> is<00:15:39.180> all<00:15:39.437> AI<00:15:39.742> generated.

00:15:40.960 --> 00:15:42.419
For<00:15:41.056> the<00:15:41.136> most<00:15:41.505> part,<00:15:41.665> I've<00:15:41.777> been<00:15:41.922> able<00:15:42.162> to<00:15:42.242> tell.

00:15:42.483 --> 00:15:44.054
I<00:15:42.563> think<00:15:42.803> I,<00:15:43.044> I<00:15:43.204> have<00:15:43.268> a<00:15:43.364> pretty<00:15:43.525> good<00:15:43.685> eye<00:15:43.845> for<00:15:44.022> it.

00:15:44.102 --> 00:15:47.436
I<00:15:44.118> think<00:15:44.246> you<00:15:44.326> and<00:15:44.406> I<00:15:44.470> are<00:15:44.567> both<00:15:44.727> in<00:15:44.807> the<00:15:44.951> business<00:15:45.288> and<00:15:45.432> you<00:15:45.528> can<00:15:45.689> kind<00:15:45.817> of<00:15:45.913> have<00:15:46.089> a<00:15:46.105> knack<00:15:46.474> for<00:15:46.570> what<00:15:46.747> is<00:15:46.955> and<00:15:47.035> what's<00:15:47.276> it's<00:15:47.340> not.

00:15:47.677 --> 00:15:53.834
But<00:15:47.773> a<00:15:47.789> lot<00:15:48.029> of<00:15:48.093> our<00:15:48.238> end<00:15:48.334> customers<00:15:48.959> or<00:15:49.056> people<00:15:49.296> who<00:15:49.376> are<00:15:49.520> on<00:15:49.601> the<00:15:49.697> go<00:15:49.921> doing<00:15:50.162> their<00:15:50.258> jobs<00:15:50.659> are<00:15:50.723> not<00:15:51.140> as,<00:15:51.380> you<00:15:51.477> know,<00:15:51.605> in<00:15:51.701> the<00:15:51.781> tech<00:15:51.942> community<00:15:52.423> or,<00:15:52.824> you<00:15:52.920> know,<00:15:53.064> know<00:15:53.224> those<00:15:53.449> warning<00:15:53.641> signs.

00:15:53.882 --> 00:15:59.718
So<00:15:54.026> I<00:15:54.106> just—<00:15:54.491> I<00:15:54.523> think<00:15:54.667> we've<00:15:54.748> got<00:15:54.892> to<00:15:54.988> be<00:15:55.148> open-minded<00:15:55.950> about<00:15:56.431> declaring<00:15:56.992> what<00:15:57.153> kind<00:15:57.409> of<00:15:57.538> content<00:15:57.971> or<00:15:58.115> what<00:15:58.275> kind<00:15:58.516> of<00:15:58.596> experience<00:15:58.933> somebody's<00:15:59.398> having.

00:16:00.440 --> 00:16:02.011
But<00:16:00.536> that<00:16:00.616> being<00:16:00.841> said,<00:16:01.065> I<00:16:01.322> agree<00:16:01.530> with<00:16:01.642> what<00:16:01.787> you<00:16:01.819> said.

00:16:02.204 --> 00:16:04.096
It<00:16:02.909> has<00:16:03.069> to<00:16:03.166> be<00:16:03.310> part<00:16:03.550> of<00:16:03.631> what<00:16:03.727> we're<00:16:03.871> doing.

00:16:04.593 --> 00:16:06.180
It<00:16:04.689> should<00:16:04.849> not<00:16:05.010> be<00:16:05.170> the<00:16:05.410> only<00:16:05.603> thing<00:16:05.891> we're<00:16:05.972> doing.

00:16:06.837 --> 00:16:08.713
Vectr<00:16:07.174> is<00:16:07.334> powered<00:16:07.816> by<00:16:07.976> human<00:16:08.297> capital.

00:16:08.778 --> 00:16:17.955
We<00:16:09.002> are,<00:16:09.419> you<00:16:09.515> know,<00:16:10.044> 700<00:16:10.445> people<00:16:10.686> who<00:16:10.766> are<00:16:10.878> strong,<00:16:11.584> mission-oriented,<00:16:12.385> who<00:16:12.546> know<00:16:12.690> our<00:16:12.930> customers,<00:16:14.053> who<00:16:14.213> know<00:16:14.390> our<00:16:14.550> space,<00:16:16.003> and<00:16:16.084> I<00:16:16.165> don't<00:16:16.312> think<00:16:16.409> that<00:16:16.588> ever<00:16:16.800> can<00:16:16.897> be<00:16:17.044> replaced<00:16:17.385> by<00:16:17.532> a<00:16:17.548> computer.

00:16:19.240 --> 00:16:21.029
How<00:16:19.354> do<00:16:19.484> you<00:16:19.581> define<00:16:19.972> culture<00:16:20.460> within<00:16:20.720> Vector?

00:16:22.716 --> 00:16:23.182
Great<00:16:22.813> question.

00:16:23.761 --> 00:16:25.994
You<00:16:23.793> know,<00:16:24.339> it<00:16:24.436> exists<00:16:24.741> in<00:16:24.821> a,<00:16:25.223> a<00:16:25.303> couple<00:16:25.625> planes.

00:16:26.348 --> 00:16:34.638
Um,<00:16:26.749> number<00:16:27.055> one<00:16:27.312> is,<00:16:27.472> you<00:16:27.553> know,<00:16:27.794> we,<00:16:28.035> like<00:16:28.211> everybody<00:16:28.581> else,<00:16:28.758> and<00:16:28.838> I<00:16:28.999> did<00:16:29.159> this<00:16:29.304> when<00:16:29.384> I<00:16:29.481> first<00:16:29.722> became<00:16:29.979> CEO,<00:16:30.365> we<00:16:30.927> kind<00:16:31.072> of<00:16:31.152> outlined<00:16:31.473> what<00:16:31.634> our<00:16:31.795> mission<00:16:32.020> statements<00:16:32.453> were<00:16:32.694> and<00:16:32.775> we<00:16:32.871> have<00:16:33.000> our<00:16:33.160> values<00:16:33.578> and<00:16:33.642> our<00:16:33.803> operating<00:16:34.140> principles.

00:16:35.104 --> 00:16:42.656
And,<00:16:35.329> and,<00:16:35.586> and<00:16:35.731> I<00:16:35.891> think<00:16:36.068> that's<00:16:36.293> the<00:16:36.470> easy<00:16:36.775> answer,<00:16:37.819> uh,<00:16:38.140> which<00:16:38.317> I<00:16:38.381> could<00:16:38.542> read<00:16:38.703> to<00:16:38.799> you,<00:16:38.960> but<00:16:39.104> I<00:16:39.137> think<00:16:39.442> to<00:16:39.538> me,<00:16:39.924> culture<00:16:40.470> is<00:16:40.566> enabling<00:16:41.354> our<00:16:41.530> people<00:16:41.853> to<00:16:42.020> be<00:16:42.121> successful.

00:16:44.206 --> 00:16:48.877
And<00:16:44.286> enabling<00:16:44.752> them<00:16:44.912> to<00:16:45.089> thrive<00:16:46.212> at<00:16:46.373> what<00:16:46.598> their<00:16:47.320> job<00:16:47.721> is<00:16:47.914> and<00:16:48.042> what<00:16:48.139> their<00:16:48.299> ambitions<00:16:48.781> are.

00:16:48.941 --> 00:16:53.918
Some<00:16:49.102> people<00:16:49.407> want<00:16:49.487> to<00:16:49.567> move<00:16:49.744> up<00:16:49.921> the<00:16:50.049> world<00:16:50.386> and<00:16:51.012> run<00:16:51.108> the<00:16:51.189> world,<00:16:51.430> and<00:16:51.510> some<00:16:51.670> people<00:16:51.991> want<00:16:52.200> to<00:16:52.537> have<00:16:52.650> that<00:16:52.794> perfect<00:16:53.131> work-life<00:16:53.516> balance.

00:16:54.239 --> 00:17:01.511
We<00:16:54.383> want<00:16:54.512> to<00:16:54.544> have<00:16:54.656> the<00:16:54.736> flexible<00:16:55.346> culture<00:16:55.860> to<00:16:56.004> allow<00:16:56.390> people<00:16:56.727> to<00:16:57.289> achieve<00:16:57.834> their<00:16:58.075> goals,<00:16:59.199> and<00:16:59.697> especially<00:17:00.178> in<00:17:00.323> commensurate<00:17:00.820> with<00:17:00.965> Vector's<00:17:01.366> goals.

00:17:02.008 --> 00:17:14.059
So<00:17:02.265> enabling<00:17:02.811> people<00:17:03.148> to<00:17:03.308> be<00:17:03.405> at<00:17:03.533> their<00:17:03.710> best,<00:17:04.031> enabling<00:17:04.512> people<00:17:04.898> to<00:17:06.102> struggle<00:17:06.599> openly<00:17:07.081> and<00:17:07.161> ask<00:17:07.386> questions<00:17:07.964> in<00:17:08.044> a<00:17:08.060> safe<00:17:08.365> environment,<00:17:09.392> ask<00:17:09.553> for<00:17:09.794> feedback<00:17:11.092> The<00:17:11.237> two<00:17:11.397> words<00:17:11.637> that<00:17:11.718> always<00:17:11.958> come<00:17:12.295> to<00:17:12.391> mind<00:17:12.760> for<00:17:12.840> me<00:17:13.017> are<00:17:13.097> feedback<00:17:13.578> and<00:17:13.658> outcomes.

00:17:14.299 --> 00:17:15.759
You<00:17:14.380> know,<00:17:14.460> we<00:17:14.620> are<00:17:14.764> a<00:17:14.780> company<00:17:15.165> that<00:17:15.262> keeps<00:17:15.614> score.

00:17:15.887 --> 00:17:20.521
We<00:17:15.983> do<00:17:16.208> care<00:17:16.865> how<00:17:17.026> we<00:17:17.186> do,<00:17:17.651> how<00:17:17.747> we<00:17:17.827> do<00:17:17.924> financially,<00:17:18.453> how<00:17:18.485> we<00:17:18.565> do<00:17:18.709> on<00:17:18.789> projects,<00:17:19.736> do<00:17:19.768> we<00:17:19.848> hit<00:17:19.928> our<00:17:20.072> deadlines.

00:17:21.516 --> 00:17:24.803
But<00:17:21.676> you<00:17:21.836> can't<00:17:22.141> go<00:17:22.398> anywhere<00:17:22.702> without<00:17:23.264> asking<00:17:23.584> for<00:17:23.680> feedback<00:17:24.081> and<00:17:24.162> giving<00:17:24.482> feedback.

00:17:25.284 --> 00:17:26.535
Nobody<00:17:25.589> gets<00:17:25.765> better<00:17:26.070> by<00:17:26.182> themselves.

00:17:27.128 --> 00:17:30.255
And<00:17:27.273> I<00:17:27.289> think<00:17:27.529> if<00:17:27.609> those<00:17:27.834> two<00:17:28.010> things<00:17:28.187> are<00:17:28.315> happening,<00:17:28.796> that's<00:17:29.037> what<00:17:29.197> I<00:17:29.213> would<00:17:29.357> call<00:17:29.598> winning<00:17:29.838> culture.

00:17:30.656 --> 00:17:39.060
And<00:17:30.736> we<00:17:30.817> spend<00:17:31.041> a<00:17:31.057> lot<00:17:31.298> of<00:17:31.378> time<00:17:31.618> on<00:17:31.699> this<00:17:31.939> in<00:17:32.436> our<00:17:32.580> review<00:17:32.901> process<00:17:33.462> and<00:17:33.543> our<00:17:33.703> weeklies<00:17:34.842> and<00:17:35.611> just<00:17:35.788> the<00:17:35.932> general<00:17:36.349> cadence<00:17:37.541> of<00:17:37.621> how<00:17:37.815> we<00:17:37.961> interact<00:17:38.365> with<00:17:38.462> our<00:17:38.624> employees.

00:17:39.739 --> 00:17:46.221
But,<00:17:40.208> you<00:17:40.288> know,<00:17:40.790> we<00:17:41.258> as<00:17:41.355> a<00:17:41.436> company<00:17:41.856> need<00:17:42.066> to<00:17:42.163> get<00:17:42.325> out<00:17:42.471> of<00:17:42.551> the<00:17:42.713> way<00:17:43.214> of<00:17:43.360> individuals<00:17:44.168> achieving<00:17:44.572> their<00:17:44.750> goals<00:17:45.073> and<00:17:45.154> ambitions,<00:17:45.639> whatever<00:17:45.962> they<00:17:46.124> are.

00:17:46.770 --> 00:17:51.280
We<00:17:46.835> have<00:17:46.900> to<00:17:46.964> spend<00:17:47.094> time<00:17:47.273> with<00:17:47.402> them<00:17:48.051> making<00:17:48.311> sure<00:17:48.473> that<00:17:48.619> they're<00:17:48.716> pointed<00:17:49.041> in<00:17:49.073> the<00:17:49.122> right<00:17:49.317> direction<00:17:49.609> and<00:17:49.755> making<00:17:49.998> sure<00:17:50.111> their<00:17:50.257> goals<00:17:50.517> are<00:17:50.663> aligned<00:17:50.906> with<00:17:51.004> ours.

00:17:51.393 --> 00:17:53.145
But<00:17:51.474> that's<00:17:52.123> to<00:17:52.220> me<00:17:52.431> what<00:17:52.529> great<00:17:52.756> culture<00:17:53.015> is.

00:17:54.300 --> 00:18:01.101
How<00:17:54.348> do<00:17:54.397> you—<00:17:56.032> are<00:17:56.178> you—<00:17:56.372> are<00:17:56.437> you—<00:17:56.680> how<00:17:56.988> have<00:17:57.230> you<00:17:57.328> handled<00:17:57.570> the<00:17:57.716> work<00:17:57.830> from<00:17:58.040> home<00:17:58.542> versus<00:17:58.947> hybrid<00:17:59.497> versus<00:17:59.918> all<00:18:00.064> in<00:18:00.161> the<00:18:00.307> office<00:18:00.809> thing?

00:18:02.007 --> 00:18:06.161
And<00:18:02.509> how<00:18:02.817> has<00:18:03.141> that<00:18:04.302> decision<00:18:05.023> changed<00:18:05.664> culture?

00:18:06.386 --> 00:18:08.597
Has<00:18:06.706> it<00:18:06.786> been<00:18:06.930> harder<00:18:07.107> to<00:18:07.187> maintain<00:18:07.732> all<00:18:07.892> of<00:18:07.972> that<00:18:08.068> type<00:18:08.324> of<00:18:08.388> stuff?

00:18:09.654 --> 00:18:11.321
Yeah,<00:18:10.071> there's<00:18:10.327> no<00:18:10.552> great<00:18:10.792> answer<00:18:11.048> to<00:18:11.129> this.

00:18:11.433 --> 00:18:12.843
And<00:18:11.529> I'm<00:18:12.138> curious<00:18:12.459> what<00:18:12.555> you're<00:18:12.651> seeing.

00:18:13.276 --> 00:18:15.824
I've<00:18:13.660> listened<00:18:13.901> to<00:18:14.077> obviously<00:18:14.333> a<00:18:14.397> couple<00:18:14.558> of<00:18:14.590> the<00:18:14.702> episodes<00:18:15.103> where<00:18:15.215> this<00:18:15.343> has<00:18:15.503> come<00:18:15.679> up.

00:18:16.881 --> 00:18:22.425
When<00:18:17.041> I<00:18:17.122> got<00:18:17.346> to<00:18:17.602> Vector,<00:18:18.083> it<00:18:18.243> was<00:18:18.468> kind<00:18:18.628> of<00:18:18.708> the<00:18:18.868> end<00:18:18.980> of<00:18:19.125> COVID<00:18:20.791> Everyone<00:18:21.031> had<00:18:21.128> been<00:18:21.288> home<00:18:21.608> for<00:18:21.768> a<00:18:21.785> little<00:18:22.009> while.

00:18:23.355 --> 00:18:26.383
And<00:18:23.755> first<00:18:24.156> year<00:18:24.412> employee<00:18:24.957> retention<00:18:25.534> was<00:18:26.239> hard.

00:18:26.960 --> 00:18:28.434
People<00:18:27.217> were<00:18:28.098> not<00:18:28.258> staying.

00:18:29.204 --> 00:18:38.866
And<00:18:29.300> so<00:18:31.625> I've<00:18:31.786> seen<00:18:32.107> it<00:18:32.268> done<00:18:32.492> so<00:18:32.589> many<00:18:32.749> different<00:18:33.070> ways,<00:18:33.472> like<00:18:33.632> the<00:18:33.777> top-down<00:18:34.274> mandate,<00:18:34.676> RTO,<00:18:35.077> everyone's<00:18:35.559> got<00:18:35.671> to<00:18:35.800> be<00:18:35.960> in<00:18:36.137> 4<00:18:36.362> days<00:18:36.586> a<00:18:36.602> week,<00:18:36.907> or<00:18:37.148> we're<00:18:37.245> going<00:18:37.341> to<00:18:37.405> be<00:18:37.630> totally<00:18:38.031> distributed.

00:18:39.075 --> 00:18:48.338
The<00:18:39.155> reality<00:18:39.572> is,<00:18:39.669> is<00:18:39.797> those<00:18:40.038> companies<00:18:40.520> who<00:18:40.600> we<00:18:40.760> compete<00:18:41.162> with<00:18:41.419> for<00:18:41.579> labor<00:18:41.981> in<00:18:42.045> this<00:18:42.221> market,<00:18:43.731> some<00:18:43.923> of<00:18:43.971> them<00:18:44.084> exist<00:18:44.405> in<00:18:44.485> the<00:18:44.935> work-from-home<00:18:45.352> environment,<00:18:45.769> some<00:18:45.898> of<00:18:45.994> them<00:18:46.091> exist<00:18:46.476> in<00:18:46.556> the<00:18:47.584> RTO<00:18:47.985> environment.

00:18:48.386 --> 00:18:54.310
So<00:18:49.285> we<00:18:49.430> try<00:18:49.607> to<00:18:49.687> think<00:18:49.863> about<00:18:50.152> this<00:18:50.329> in<00:18:50.409> both<00:18:50.650> what's<00:18:50.875> best<00:18:51.051> for<00:18:51.196> Vector<00:18:51.453> and<00:18:51.597> what's<00:18:51.774> best<00:18:51.999> to<00:18:52.159> keep<00:18:52.480> and<00:18:52.641> grow<00:18:52.721> our<00:18:52.898> employee<00:18:53.379> base<00:18:53.925> thriving.

00:18:54.840 --> 00:19:01.471
So<00:18:55.226> we<00:18:55.450> empowered<00:18:56.028> local<00:18:56.494> leaders<00:18:57.393> not<00:18:57.538> by<00:18:57.634> geography,<00:18:58.180> but<00:18:58.276> by<00:18:58.437> discipline<00:18:59.464> to<00:18:59.545> make<00:18:59.785> the<00:18:59.866> decisions<00:19:00.524> what's<00:19:00.749> right<00:19:01.070> for<00:19:01.150> their<00:19:01.311> team.

00:19:01.648 --> 00:19:09.901
So<00:19:02.435> we<00:19:02.595> have,<00:19:03.334> you<00:19:03.366> know,<00:19:04.057> 4<00:19:04.201> or<00:19:04.313> 5<00:19:04.763> major<00:19:05.084> hubs<00:19:05.405> around<00:19:05.566> the<00:19:05.662> country:<00:19:06.144> Tampa,<00:19:06.706> Cincinnati,<00:19:07.605> I'm<00:19:07.814> in<00:19:07.910> Bloomington,<00:19:08.312> Indiana<00:19:08.665> today,<00:19:09.114> and<00:19:09.195> San<00:19:09.435> Diego.

00:19:10.463 --> 00:19:17.239
And<00:19:10.624> the<00:19:10.961> people<00:19:11.683> who<00:19:11.908> run<00:19:12.085> the<00:19:12.245> organizations<00:19:12.952> that<00:19:13.032> are<00:19:13.129> in<00:19:13.209> those<00:19:13.450> markets<00:19:14.895> are<00:19:14.991> setting<00:19:15.457> their<00:19:15.617> own<00:19:15.778> policies<00:19:16.404> on<00:19:16.484> what's<00:19:16.645> right<00:19:16.886> for<00:19:16.966> their<00:19:17.062> team.

00:19:18.106 --> 00:19:21.992
Product<00:19:18.524> development,<00:19:19.310> technical<00:19:19.776> development<00:19:20.258> is<00:19:20.675> mostly<00:19:21.558> work<00:19:21.735> from<00:19:21.879> home.

00:19:23.324 --> 00:19:35.116
Younger<00:19:24.270> roles,<00:19:24.832> let's<00:19:25.073> call<00:19:25.185> it<00:19:25.570> SDRs,<00:19:27.094> entry-level<00:19:27.559> sales<00:19:27.960> roles,<00:19:28.618> we<00:19:28.698> strongly<00:19:29.340> encourage<00:19:29.725> those<00:19:29.902> managers<00:19:30.303> to<00:19:30.335> make<00:19:30.527> decisions<00:19:31.025> to<00:19:31.185> bring<00:19:31.811> people<00:19:32.051> into<00:19:32.228> the<00:19:32.372> office<00:19:32.581> because<00:19:33.191> it's<00:19:33.271> very<00:19:33.511> hard<00:19:33.752> to<00:19:34.057> learn<00:19:34.715> by<00:19:34.859> yourself.

00:19:35.757 --> 00:19:41.549
You<00:19:35.902> have<00:19:36.062> to<00:19:36.223> learn<00:19:36.704> by<00:19:36.864> experience<00:19:37.442> and<00:19:37.586> learn<00:19:37.827> by<00:19:38.324> listening<00:19:38.629> to<00:19:38.709> others<00:19:39.127> and<00:19:39.271> what<00:19:39.367> that<00:19:39.528> phone<00:19:39.688> call<00:19:39.929> looks<00:19:40.153> like<00:19:40.410> and<00:19:40.554> how<00:19:40.651> did<00:19:40.795> that<00:19:41.036> meeting<00:19:41.292> go.

00:19:41.629 --> 00:19:45.400
And<00:19:42.319> so<00:19:43.282> there<00:19:43.458> is<00:19:43.603> no<00:19:43.859> one-size-fits-all<00:19:44.982> answer.

00:19:46.106 --> 00:19:47.196
The<00:19:46.186> strategy<00:19:46.475> has<00:19:46.667> been<00:19:46.827> working.

00:19:47.309 --> 00:19:48.512
Employee<00:19:47.614> engagement<00:19:48.111> is<00:19:48.336> up.

00:19:48.672 --> 00:19:51.657
You<00:19:48.705> know,<00:19:48.913> attrition<00:19:49.314> is<00:19:49.555> dramatically<00:19:50.116> down<00:19:50.501> to<00:19:50.838> world-class<00:19:51.320> levels.

00:19:52.186 --> 00:19:54.671
I<00:19:52.282> don't<00:19:53.565> know<00:19:53.709> what<00:19:53.805> the<00:19:53.885> future<00:19:54.142> holds<00:19:54.431> yet.

00:19:54.751 --> 00:20:06.825
You<00:19:54.783> know,<00:19:54.928> I<00:19:55.072> definitely—<00:19:55.729> I<00:19:55.809> think<00:19:55.954> for<00:19:56.114> people,<00:19:56.691> and<00:19:56.755> I'll<00:19:56.884> just<00:19:57.252> group<00:19:57.477> you<00:19:57.573> in<00:19:57.717> my<00:19:57.894> age,<00:19:58.279> kind<00:19:59.016> of<00:19:59.064> a<00:19:59.080> little<00:19:59.257> older,<00:20:00.539> we<00:20:00.780> grew<00:20:01.004> up<00:20:01.405> going<00:20:01.678> to<00:20:01.806> offices<00:20:02.303> and<00:20:02.383> working<00:20:02.640> at<00:20:02.768> companies<00:20:03.185> in<00:20:03.281> our<00:20:03.425> networks,<00:20:03.906> and<00:20:04.548> we<00:20:04.788> built<00:20:05.013> our<00:20:05.125> networks<00:20:05.494> from<00:20:05.670> meeting<00:20:05.911> people<00:20:06.215> at<00:20:06.376> the<00:20:06.472> office.

00:20:06.953 --> 00:20:13.960
And<00:20:07.835> it's<00:20:07.995> easier<00:20:08.300> for<00:20:08.460> us<00:20:08.556> to<00:20:08.652> make<00:20:08.861> the<00:20:08.941> transition<00:20:10.079> to<00:20:10.945> work<00:20:11.106> from<00:20:11.266> home<00:20:11.458> in<00:20:11.587> a<00:20:11.603> hybrid,<00:20:11.987> like<00:20:12.404> I<00:20:12.484> travel<00:20:12.885> 50-60%<00:20:13.607> of<00:20:13.751> the<00:20:13.831> time.

00:20:14.104 --> 00:20:20.903
So,<00:20:14.889> and<00:20:14.954> then,<00:20:15.194> but<00:20:15.354> I<00:20:15.451> worry<00:20:15.932> a<00:20:15.996> little<00:20:16.252> bit<00:20:16.557> for,<00:20:17.038> you<00:20:17.118> know,<00:20:17.214> younger<00:20:17.519> generations<00:20:18.176> who<00:20:18.321> are<00:20:18.433> starting<00:20:18.898> their<00:20:19.122> careers<00:20:19.860> without<00:20:20.245> those<00:20:20.630> work.

00:20:21.690 --> 00:20:25.722
And,<00:20:22.027> and<00:20:22.895> they<00:20:22.991> have<00:20:23.152> great<00:20:23.377> jobs,<00:20:23.859> but,<00:20:24.341> you<00:20:24.373> know,<00:20:24.501> how<00:20:24.662> does<00:20:24.742> that<00:20:24.903> turn<00:20:25.064> into<00:20:25.240> a<00:20:25.321> career?

00:20:26.044 --> 00:20:34.366
And<00:20:26.108> it<00:20:26.188> puts<00:20:26.365> a<00:20:26.429> lot<00:20:26.670> of<00:20:27.152> onus<00:20:27.473> on<00:20:27.714> us<00:20:27.955> as<00:20:28.373> leaders<00:20:28.839> and<00:20:29.016> as<00:20:29.964> HR<00:20:30.221> people<00:20:30.687> to<00:20:31.329> create<00:20:31.811> that<00:20:31.972> culture<00:20:32.309> and<00:20:32.454> create<00:20:32.647> the<00:20:32.711> environment<00:20:33.032> where<00:20:33.113> they<00:20:33.257> can<00:20:33.498> interact<00:20:33.835> with<00:20:33.916> their<00:20:34.076> peers.

00:20:34.799 --> 00:20:39.217
So<00:20:35.137> it's<00:20:35.346> a<00:20:35.362> never—<00:20:36.165> it's<00:20:36.663> a—<00:20:36.711> I<00:20:36.743> don't<00:20:36.872> think<00:20:36.968> there's<00:20:37.193> one<00:20:37.675> solution<00:20:38.157> that's<00:20:38.318> going<00:20:38.398> to<00:20:38.478> work<00:20:38.719> for<00:20:38.800> everybody.

00:20:39.844 --> 00:20:45.788
Um,<00:20:40.487> and<00:20:40.647> we<00:20:40.728> recognize<00:20:41.129> that<00:20:41.226> Vector<00:20:41.547> is<00:20:41.627> in<00:20:41.708> a<00:20:41.788> lot<00:20:41.949> of<00:20:42.029> different<00:20:42.431> markets<00:20:42.832> and<00:20:42.897> a<00:20:42.913> lot<00:20:43.170> of<00:20:43.234> different<00:20:43.555> geographies,<00:20:44.134> so<00:20:44.455> there's<00:20:44.664> certainly<00:20:44.857> no<00:20:45.065> one-size-fits-all.

00:20:46.286 --> 00:20:47.879
But<00:20:46.431> so<00:20:46.608> far<00:20:46.768> we've<00:20:46.913> been<00:20:47.009> pretty<00:20:47.234> happy<00:20:47.459> with<00:20:47.540> the<00:20:47.588> result.

00:20:49.416 --> 00:21:05.240
How<00:20:49.594> do<00:20:49.740> you,<00:20:50.144> like,<00:20:50.808> just<00:20:50.970> to<00:20:51.067> double-click<00:20:51.455> on<00:20:51.536> this<00:20:51.762> real<00:20:52.183> quick,<00:20:52.491> like,<00:20:52.733> the<00:20:53.154> maintaining<00:20:53.639> the<00:20:53.785> culture<00:20:54.351> from<00:20:54.836> the,<00:20:56.202> um,<00:20:56.860> perspective<00:20:57.487> of<00:20:57.808> you<00:20:57.889> have<00:20:58.049> all<00:20:58.146> these<00:20:58.306> people<00:20:58.547> in<00:20:58.692> all<00:20:58.788> these<00:20:58.933> different<00:20:59.190> areas,<00:20:59.656> all<00:20:59.736> these<00:20:59.913> people<00:21:00.379> in<00:21:01.359> various<00:21:01.761> segments,<00:21:02.163> how<00:21:02.307> do<00:21:02.404> they<00:21:02.645> all,<00:21:02.966> like,<00:21:03.271> understand<00:21:04.155> the<00:21:04.332> mission<00:21:04.656> of<00:21:04.802> Vector?

00:21:05.451 --> 00:21:10.156
And<00:21:05.549> they're<00:21:05.776> all—<00:21:06.684> I<00:21:06.765> just<00:21:06.927> think<00:21:07.025> this<00:21:07.333> is,<00:21:07.495> this<00:21:07.657> is,<00:21:07.739> like,<00:21:07.966> maybe<00:21:08.209> top<00:21:08.469> of<00:21:08.501> mind<00:21:08.777> for<00:21:08.874> so<00:21:09.053> many<00:21:09.345> leaders,<00:21:09.994> right?

00:21:10.821 --> 00:21:15.118
Like,<00:21:10.983> how<00:21:11.080> do<00:21:11.291> I,<00:21:12.054> like,<00:21:12.298> make<00:21:12.543> sure<00:21:12.934> my<00:21:13.178> whole<00:21:13.358> team<00:21:13.749> knows<00:21:14.156> the<00:21:14.238> direction<00:21:14.727> we're<00:21:14.890> rowing?

00:21:15.983 --> 00:21:22.316
What<00:21:16.079> our<00:21:16.287> values<00:21:16.704> are,<00:21:16.945> what<00:21:17.089> our<00:21:17.185> mission<00:21:17.730> is,<00:21:19.254> when<00:21:19.414> they're<00:21:19.831> all<00:21:19.927> sorts<00:21:20.248> of<00:21:20.296> different<00:21:20.536> places<00:21:20.857> focused<00:21:21.114> on<00:21:21.274> various<00:21:21.675> parts<00:21:21.851> of<00:21:21.915> the<00:21:21.996> company?

00:21:23.343 --> 00:21:31.376
Yeah,<00:21:25.363> I<00:21:25.443> think<00:21:25.507> it's<00:21:25.684> the<00:21:25.748> hardest<00:21:26.068> thing<00:21:26.165> a<00:21:26.229> leader<00:21:26.469> has<00:21:26.646> to<00:21:26.806> do,<00:21:27.287> and<00:21:27.431> I<00:21:27.528> think<00:21:27.704> it<00:21:27.768> comes<00:21:28.009> down<00:21:28.169> to<00:21:28.329> a<00:21:28.394> communication<00:21:28.971> platform,<00:21:30.077> and<00:21:30.157> I<00:21:30.173> think<00:21:30.270> it<00:21:30.334> comes<00:21:30.526> down<00:21:30.719> to<00:21:30.895> a<00:21:31.039> rhythm.

00:21:32.114 --> 00:21:36.716
So<00:21:32.563> when<00:21:32.803> I<00:21:33.364> first<00:21:33.781> got<00:21:34.022> here,<00:21:34.583> I<00:21:34.663> put<00:21:34.840> in<00:21:34.984> place<00:21:35.866> a<00:21:35.946> couple<00:21:36.347> things.

00:21:37.549 --> 00:21:38.976
There<00:21:37.726> is<00:21:37.870> a<00:21:38.014> quarterly<00:21:38.511> town<00:21:38.752> hall.

00:21:39.057 --> 00:21:42.648
Sounds<00:21:39.313> basic,<00:21:39.874> and<00:21:39.955> everyone<00:21:40.211> does<00:21:40.500> one,<00:21:40.676> but<00:21:40.756> then<00:21:41.077> we<00:21:41.157> start<00:21:41.462> off<00:21:41.574> the<00:21:41.654> town<00:21:41.815> hall<00:21:42.023> with<00:21:42.135> that<00:21:42.360> mission.

00:21:43.162 --> 00:21:46.134
With<00:21:43.338> our<00:21:43.483> values<00:21:44.045> and<00:21:44.511> with<00:21:44.672> our<00:21:44.832> results<00:21:45.330> and<00:21:45.411> what<00:21:45.491> we're<00:21:45.587> trying<00:21:45.893> to<00:21:45.989> do.

00:21:46.776 --> 00:21:52.126
In<00:21:46.873> each<00:21:47.097> of<00:21:47.178> the<00:21:48.045> off<00:21:48.302> months,<00:21:49.250> the<00:21:49.346> divisions,<00:21:49.828> whether<00:21:50.005> it<00:21:50.053> be<00:21:50.150> product<00:21:50.632> or<00:21:50.696> sales<00:21:51.114> or<00:21:51.178> tech,<00:21:51.419> are<00:21:51.515> doing<00:21:51.820> theirs.

00:21:52.656 --> 00:22:09.026
I<00:21:52.865> do,<00:21:53.588> to<00:21:53.748> compensate<00:21:54.230> for<00:21:54.343> the<00:21:54.792> hallway<00:21:55.114> chats<00:21:55.531> that<00:21:56.174> you<00:21:56.270> and<00:21:56.399> I<00:21:56.495> had<00:21:56.736> when<00:21:56.897> we<00:21:56.977> were<00:21:57.057> all<00:21:57.218> in<00:21:57.282> offices<00:21:57.700> many<00:21:57.861> years<00:21:58.102> ago,<00:21:58.664> I<00:21:58.744> do<00:21:58.905> a<00:21:58.921> CEO<00:21:59.290> roundtable<00:21:59.708> every<00:21:59.933> week<00:22:00.174> where<00:22:00.270> I<00:22:00.351> take<00:22:00.511> 10<00:22:00.672> or<00:22:00.752> 15<00:22:01.074> people<00:22:01.539> and,<00:22:01.957> as<00:22:02.118> opposed<00:22:02.391> to<00:22:02.455> just<00:22:02.680> sitting<00:22:02.921> in<00:22:03.001> the<00:22:03.082> lunchroom<00:22:03.965> and<00:22:04.046> talking,<00:22:04.929> we,<00:22:05.556> you<00:22:05.588> know,<00:22:05.732> we'll<00:22:05.973> have<00:22:06.070> a<00:22:06.134> beer<00:22:06.359> after<00:22:06.519> work<00:22:06.841> or<00:22:06.937> we<00:22:07.082> will,<00:22:07.805> you<00:22:07.837> know,<00:22:07.981> talk<00:22:08.222> about<00:22:08.383> what's<00:22:08.544> important.

00:22:09.106 --> 00:22:11.472
It's<00:22:09.266> half<00:22:09.572> work<00:22:09.829> and<00:22:10.214> half<00:22:11.310> culture.

00:22:11.830 --> 00:22:17.149
But<00:22:11.928> I<00:22:12.058> think<00:22:12.237> the<00:22:12.318> communication<00:22:13.213> platform<00:22:13.782> of<00:22:13.928> how<00:22:14.189> those<00:22:14.433> things<00:22:14.660> come<00:22:14.839> together<00:22:15.246> cannot<00:22:15.799> be<00:22:15.848> casual.

00:22:18.468 --> 00:22:19.338
It<00:22:18.500> has<00:22:18.548> to<00:22:18.694> be<00:22:18.855> purposeful.

00:22:19.661 --> 00:22:26.238
The<00:22:19.741> more<00:22:19.903> distributed<00:22:20.467> you<00:22:20.612> are,<00:22:20.725> the<00:22:20.805> more<00:22:21.096> purposeful<00:22:21.660> you<00:22:21.757> have<00:22:21.934> to<00:22:22.063> be<00:22:22.176> about<00:22:22.385> the<00:22:22.482> messages<00:22:23.030> that<00:22:23.127> go<00:22:23.353> out<00:22:24.014> and<00:22:24.094> that<00:22:24.255> you<00:22:24.336> can<00:22:24.497> acknowledge<00:22:24.965> that<00:22:25.061> those<00:22:25.287> messages<00:22:25.706> were<00:22:25.851> received.

00:22:26.860 --> 00:22:29.001
How<00:22:26.908> do<00:22:26.956> you<00:22:27.133> know<00:22:27.375> that<00:22:27.536> people<00:22:28.099> heard<00:22:28.421> what<00:22:28.647> you<00:22:28.743> said?

00:22:29.532 --> 00:22:30.676
Asking<00:22:30.015> for<00:22:30.112> feedback.

00:22:30.982 --> 00:22:31.996
Does<00:22:31.143> this<00:22:31.320> make<00:22:31.545> sense<00:22:31.883> to<00:22:31.948> you?

00:22:32.511 --> 00:22:35.313
Do<00:22:32.688> you<00:22:32.914> understand<00:22:33.413> what<00:22:33.574> your<00:22:33.799> role<00:22:34.057> is<00:22:34.202> in<00:22:34.298> us<00:22:34.443> achieving<00:22:34.862> that<00:22:35.087> mission?

00:22:35.909 --> 00:22:42.468
And<00:22:36.054> I<00:22:36.150> think<00:22:36.602> closing<00:22:37.163> that<00:22:37.467> loop<00:22:38.125> and<00:22:38.269> using<00:22:38.685> kind<00:22:38.846> of<00:22:38.926> our<00:22:39.086> values<00:22:39.567> of<00:22:39.711> feedback<00:22:40.673> has<00:22:41.891> been<00:22:42.116> critical.

00:22:42.532 --> 00:22:44.985
And<00:22:43.093> I'm<00:22:43.253> very<00:22:43.494> purposeful<00:22:43.959> about<00:22:44.071> our<00:22:44.199> communications.

00:22:46.139 --> 00:22:48.799
I<00:22:46.203> use<00:22:46.379> a<00:22:46.443> tool<00:22:46.940> which<00:22:47.100> I<00:22:47.180> learned<00:22:47.325> many<00:22:47.501> years<00:22:47.725> ago<00:22:47.886> called<00:22:48.078> an<00:22:48.222> ABC.

00:22:49.200 --> 00:22:50.130
I'm<00:22:49.504> so<00:22:49.729> basic.

00:22:50.691 --> 00:22:51.909
Audience,<00:22:51.091> behavior,<00:22:51.492> content.

00:22:52.053 --> 00:22:54.345
You<00:22:52.085> know,<00:22:52.149> who<00:22:52.309> is<00:22:52.406> the<00:22:52.550> audience<00:22:52.934> you're<00:22:53.031> trying<00:22:53.335> to<00:22:54.072> address?

00:22:55.259 --> 00:22:57.118
What<00:22:55.371> is<00:22:55.499> the<00:22:55.595> behavior<00:22:56.156> you<00:22:56.381> want<00:22:56.621> out<00:22:56.733> of<00:22:56.797> that<00:22:56.958> audience?

00:22:57.919 --> 00:23:00.484
And<00:22:58.015> then<00:22:58.160> what<00:22:58.320> is<00:22:58.416> the<00:22:58.544> content,<00:22:59.105> the<00:22:59.137> C,<00:22:59.522> that<00:22:59.682> you<00:22:59.762> need<00:22:59.939> to<00:23:00.003> deliver?

00:23:00.884 --> 00:23:02.664
There's<00:23:01.125> a<00:23:01.205> D<00:23:01.429> and<00:23:01.526> E<00:23:01.750> which<00:23:01.926> I<00:23:01.942> don't<00:23:02.103> use<00:23:02.263> as<00:23:02.391> often.

00:23:02.808 --> 00:23:04.411
Design,<00:23:03.273> how<00:23:03.305> do<00:23:03.353> you<00:23:03.449> design<00:23:03.769> the<00:23:03.850> communication?

00:23:04.555 --> 00:23:05.421
E,<00:23:04.651> how<00:23:04.747> do<00:23:04.795> you<00:23:04.940> evaluated.

00:23:05.775 --> 00:23:09.549
But<00:23:05.871> I<00:23:05.935> think<00:23:06.256> sometimes<00:23:06.979> it's<00:23:07.140> as<00:23:07.220> equal<00:23:07.525> as<00:23:07.943> a<00:23:08.007> Post-it,<00:23:08.585> like,<00:23:08.665> "I'm<00:23:08.730> going<00:23:08.810> to<00:23:08.842> go<00:23:08.971> talk<00:23:09.163> to<00:23:09.244> somebody.

00:23:09.950 --> 00:23:14.238
What's<00:23:10.095> my<00:23:10.127> ABC?"<00:23:11.074> And<00:23:11.139> then,<00:23:11.219> when<00:23:11.299> you're<00:23:11.380> writing<00:23:11.572> a<00:23:11.636> board<00:23:11.877> deck<00:23:12.134> or<00:23:12.263> you're<00:23:12.359> writing<00:23:12.600> a<00:23:12.680> town<00:23:12.921> hall,<00:23:13.307> it's<00:23:13.724> more<00:23:13.869> robust.

00:23:14.286 --> 00:23:16.856
It's<00:23:14.383> a<00:23:14.447> document<00:23:14.993> that's<00:23:15.170> thoughtful<00:23:15.491> and<00:23:15.651> edited<00:23:15.876> and<00:23:15.973> exactly<00:23:16.535> what<00:23:16.679> you<00:23:16.760> do.

00:23:16.936 --> 00:23:24.163
And<00:23:17.498> I<00:23:17.836> strongly<00:23:18.301> encourage<00:23:18.879> leaders<00:23:19.265> to<00:23:19.827> really<00:23:20.132> think<00:23:20.309> about<00:23:21.353> their<00:23:21.513> communication<00:23:22.156> platform,<00:23:22.493> especially<00:23:22.878> in<00:23:23.023> leadership<00:23:23.344> positions<00:23:23.713> like<00:23:23.906> mine.

00:23:24.629 --> 00:23:27.070
People<00:23:24.966> listen<00:23:25.448> to<00:23:25.753> you<00:23:26.074> more<00:23:26.251> than<00:23:26.412> you<00:23:26.492> think<00:23:26.813> they<00:23:26.974> do.

00:23:27.841 --> 00:23:31.679
They'll<00:23:28.001> take<00:23:28.178> a<00:23:28.258> casual<00:23:28.724> conversation<00:23:29.543> and<00:23:29.591> it<00:23:29.704> becomes<00:23:30.025> a<00:23:30.105> directive<00:23:30.651> because<00:23:30.908> it<00:23:30.973> came<00:23:31.149> from<00:23:31.294> the<00:23:31.326> CEO.

00:23:32.296 --> 00:23:37.375
So<00:23:32.686> you<00:23:32.751> have<00:23:32.848> to<00:23:32.929> be<00:23:33.108> very<00:23:33.432> careful<00:23:34.308> with<00:23:34.471> what<00:23:34.633> comes<00:23:34.811> out<00:23:34.860> of<00:23:34.892> your<00:23:34.974> mouth<00:23:35.541> and<00:23:35.623> what<00:23:35.769> comes<00:23:35.947> out<00:23:36.044> of<00:23:36.174> your<00:23:36.742> fingers<00:23:37.002> when<00:23:37.083> you're<00:23:37.229> typing.

00:23:38.140 --> 00:23:39.806
And<00:23:38.479> you<00:23:38.528> don't<00:23:38.722> want<00:23:38.803> to<00:23:38.900> be<00:23:39.143> cautious<00:23:39.628> about<00:23:39.758> it.

00:23:39.871 --> 00:23:41.570
You<00:23:39.952> want<00:23:40.082> to<00:23:40.195> over—<00:23:40.518> I<00:23:40.680> believe<00:23:40.858> in<00:23:40.988> transparency.

00:23:41.651 --> 00:23:44.338
I<00:23:41.732> believe<00:23:41.975> in<00:23:42.460> telling<00:23:42.703> people<00:23:42.930> everything<00:23:43.189> that's<00:23:43.351> going<00:23:43.593> on<00:23:43.755> that<00:23:43.852> I<00:23:43.982> can.

00:23:45.196 --> 00:23:46.587
But<00:23:45.293> you<00:23:45.438> have<00:23:45.535> to<00:23:45.681> be<00:23:45.778> very<00:23:46.005> purposeful<00:23:46.425> about<00:23:46.490> it.

00:23:48.320 --> 00:23:56.289
What<00:23:48.384> about<00:23:48.497> like<00:23:48.756> board<00:23:49.484> governance<00:23:50.293> and<00:23:50.439> how<00:23:50.682> you<00:23:50.795> interact<00:23:51.410> and<00:23:51.507> engage<00:23:51.911> with<00:23:52.057> your<00:23:52.235> board,<00:23:52.575> present<00:23:52.979> to<00:23:53.108> the<00:23:53.206> board,<00:23:54.800> maintain<00:23:54.996> relationships<00:23:55.814> with<00:23:55.961> the<00:23:56.060> board?

00:23:57.492 --> 00:24:12.469
That's<00:23:57.652> another<00:23:57.973> thing<00:23:58.134> that<00:23:58.375> I'm<00:23:58.535> seeing<00:23:58.776> more<00:23:58.905> and<00:23:59.017> more<00:23:59.258> as<00:23:59.418> we<00:23:59.498> interview<00:23:59.820> more<00:23:59.980> and<00:24:00.060> more<00:24:00.221> CEOs<00:24:00.943> is<00:24:01.666> just<00:24:01.826> like,<00:24:02.003> hey,<00:24:02.147> that's<00:24:02.388> a<00:24:02.452> whole<00:24:03.094> different<00:24:03.608> set<00:24:04.298> of<00:24:04.571> skills<00:24:05.663> and<00:24:06.401> a<00:24:06.465> whole<00:24:06.626> different<00:24:06.979> approach<00:24:07.685> than<00:24:07.782> it<00:24:07.910> would—<00:24:08.167> than<00:24:08.327> say<00:24:08.568> like<00:24:09.387> CEO<00:24:09.933> roundtable<00:24:10.655> every<00:24:10.896> week<00:24:11.313> or<00:24:11.393> these<00:24:11.682> town<00:24:11.939> halls,<00:24:12.341> right?

00:24:12.565 --> 00:24:13.641
It's<00:24:12.983> a<00:24:13.063> different<00:24:13.528> thing.

00:24:13.705 --> 00:24:14.668
How<00:24:13.866> do<00:24:14.010> you<00:24:14.122> manage<00:24:14.588> it?

00:24:15.856 --> 00:24:16.209
Yeah.

00:24:16.595 --> 00:24:20.415
Number<00:24:16.835> one,<00:24:17.060> I<00:24:17.140> think<00:24:17.317> the<00:24:17.477> principles<00:24:18.746> are<00:24:18.842> the<00:24:18.986> same<00:24:19.323> about<00:24:19.725> being<00:24:19.966> purposeful.

00:24:21.555 --> 00:24:28.391
I<00:24:22.293> was<00:24:22.438> lucky<00:24:22.678> enough<00:24:22.855> to<00:24:22.919> have<00:24:23.032> a<00:24:23.096> couple<00:24:23.304> of<00:24:23.337> mentors<00:24:23.674> in<00:24:23.738> my<00:24:23.963> career<00:24:24.284> who<00:24:24.380> taught<00:24:24.621> me<00:24:24.942> when<00:24:25.279> I<00:24:25.407> wasn't<00:24:25.728> writing<00:24:25.969> the<00:24:26.065> board<00:24:26.257> deck<00:24:26.450> but<00:24:26.546> I<00:24:26.610> was<00:24:26.707> in<00:24:26.851> the<00:24:27.028> room,<00:24:27.894> how<00:24:28.006> does<00:24:28.167> it<00:24:28.295> go?

00:24:29.049 --> 00:24:32.851
So<00:24:29.755> the<00:24:29.851> number<00:24:30.092> one<00:24:30.236> thing,<00:24:30.862> nothing<00:24:31.279> should<00:24:31.504> ever<00:24:31.680> be<00:24:31.841> a<00:24:31.857> surprise<00:24:32.482> in<00:24:32.563> a<00:24:32.643> board<00:24:32.707> meeting.

00:24:32.996 --> 00:24:35.836
So<00:24:34.488> I<00:24:34.568> try<00:24:34.745> to<00:24:34.889> pre-align,<00:24:35.531> number<00:24:35.755> one.

00:24:35.932 --> 00:24:38.066
I<00:24:35.996> have<00:24:36.092> regular<00:24:36.477> conversations<00:24:37.135> with<00:24:37.296> board<00:24:37.568> members,<00:24:37.937> right?

00:24:38.114 --> 00:24:50.275
So<00:24:38.724> whether<00:24:38.916> it<00:24:38.964> be<00:24:39.141> a<00:24:39.542> quick<00:24:39.766> call<00:24:40.424> or<00:24:40.649> text<00:24:40.986> or<00:24:41.050> what<00:24:41.130> have<00:24:41.371> you,<00:24:41.547> like<00:24:41.772> there's<00:24:42.269> different<00:24:42.574> layers<00:24:42.927> of<00:24:42.991> communication<00:24:43.472> I<00:24:43.537> have<00:24:43.633> with<00:24:43.729> each<00:24:43.890> of<00:24:43.954> them,<00:24:44.515> but<00:24:44.900> I'm<00:24:45.318> keeping<00:24:45.574> them<00:24:45.719> abreast<00:24:46.056> of<00:24:46.120> what's<00:24:46.360> going<00:24:46.745> on<00:24:47.002> and<00:24:47.163> what's<00:24:47.403> keeping<00:24:47.644> me<00:24:47.804> up<00:24:47.949> at<00:24:48.045> night<00:24:48.270> and<00:24:48.350> what's<00:24:48.607> good<00:24:48.783> and<00:24:48.927> bad<00:24:49.248> on<00:24:49.409> a<00:24:49.489> regular<00:24:49.890> basis.

00:24:50.756 --> 00:24:53.356
And<00:24:50.853> then<00:24:51.238> we<00:24:51.318> use<00:24:51.478> the<00:24:51.559> same<00:24:51.735> ABC<00:24:52.120> tool<00:24:52.377> for<00:24:52.537> a<00:24:52.682> board<00:24:52.842> document.

00:24:54.783 --> 00:24:59.420
I<00:24:54.928> use<00:24:55.104> it<00:24:55.201> as<00:24:55.281> a<00:24:55.345> forcing<00:24:55.746> mechanism<00:24:56.452> for<00:24:56.532> my<00:24:56.773> team<00:24:57.110> as<00:24:57.270> well<00:24:57.591> to<00:24:57.687> make<00:24:57.832> sure<00:24:58.088> that<00:24:58.233> we<00:24:58.329> are<00:24:58.538> kind<00:24:58.698> of<00:24:58.794> on<00:24:58.955> task.

00:24:59.917 --> 00:25:07.362
But<00:25:01.105> it's<00:25:01.907> no<00:25:02.148> different<00:25:02.613> than,<00:25:03.206> you<00:25:03.287> know,<00:25:04.330> it<00:25:04.554> is<00:25:04.666> different,<00:25:04.971> but<00:25:05.116> it's<00:25:05.276> no<00:25:05.437> different<00:25:05.693> than<00:25:05.854> a<00:25:05.918> roundtable<00:25:06.592> or<00:25:06.736> a<00:25:06.816> town<00:25:07.057> hall.

00:25:07.699 --> 00:25:10.988
You<00:25:07.843> have<00:25:07.939> a<00:25:07.955> certain<00:25:08.324> audience<00:25:08.822> who<00:25:08.886> you<00:25:08.982> need<00:25:09.127> a<00:25:09.143> certain<00:25:09.464> behavior<00:25:09.961> from,<00:25:10.362> certain<00:25:10.587> outcome.

00:25:11.469 --> 00:25:13.282
And<00:25:11.533> then<00:25:11.694> what<00:25:11.790> is<00:25:11.886> the<00:25:12.015> content<00:25:12.368> I'm<00:25:12.448> going<00:25:12.544> to<00:25:12.656> share<00:25:12.977> with<00:25:13.154> them?

00:25:14.421 --> 00:25:20.521
How<00:25:14.662> you<00:25:14.758> deliver<00:25:15.159> that<00:25:15.320> content<00:25:16.106> If<00:25:16.202> you're<00:25:16.684> not<00:25:16.989> sure<00:25:17.310> of<00:25:17.342> an<00:25:17.487> outcome<00:25:17.968> of<00:25:18.065> a<00:25:18.129> board<00:25:18.370> meeting<00:25:18.755> before<00:25:18.996> you<00:25:19.108> start,<00:25:19.638> you're<00:25:20.136> gonna<00:25:20.297> fail.

00:25:21.356 --> 00:25:29.722
So<00:25:22.223> it<00:25:22.304> is<00:25:22.705> per—<00:25:22.866> I<00:25:23.042> don't<00:25:23.283> wanna<00:25:23.428> call<00:25:23.604> it<00:25:23.733> performance<00:25:24.214> art,<00:25:24.375> but<00:25:24.536> you<00:25:24.632> should<00:25:24.857> know<00:25:25.756> what<00:25:25.916> your<00:25:26.061> chairman<00:25:26.864> and<00:25:27.024> his<00:25:27.362> inklings<00:25:27.843> think<00:25:28.871> before<00:25:29.144> you<00:25:29.288> get<00:25:29.433> into<00:25:29.674> it.

00:25:30.477 --> 00:25:31.584
There's<00:25:30.589> no<00:25:30.733> new<00:25:31.055> information.

00:25:32.082 --> 00:25:36.321
Like<00:25:32.580> financial<00:25:33.046> information<00:25:33.784> should<00:25:34.025> be<00:25:34.828> de<00:25:34.908> minimis<00:25:35.390> 'cause<00:25:35.534> they<00:25:35.566> should<00:25:35.791> know<00:25:35.872> the<00:25:36.016> results.

00:25:36.594 --> 00:25:37.654
That<00:25:36.835> can<00:25:36.979> be<00:25:37.060> shared<00:25:37.252> over<00:25:37.477> email.

00:25:37.718 --> 00:25:41.283
You're<00:25:37.798> not<00:25:37.911> gonna<00:25:38.441> go<00:25:38.601> through<00:25:38.762> every<00:25:39.083> detail<00:25:39.629> of<00:25:39.725> every<00:25:40.046> spreadsheet<00:25:40.689> in<00:25:40.769> a<00:25:40.785> meeting<00:25:40.978> like<00:25:41.170> that.

00:25:41.716 --> 00:25:55.534
The<00:25:41.812> things<00:25:42.117> that<00:25:42.213> require<00:25:42.694> intense<00:25:43.255> thought<00:25:43.575> and<00:25:43.736> debate<00:25:44.297> where<00:25:44.441> you<00:25:44.537> need<00:25:44.842> help,<00:25:45.403> you<00:25:45.499> need<00:25:45.739> feedback,<00:25:46.605> you<00:25:46.685> want<00:25:47.262> to<00:25:47.487> pull<00:25:47.727> their<00:25:47.984> expertise,<00:25:49.426> that's<00:25:49.731> a<00:25:49.747> great<00:25:49.987> board<00:25:50.228> meeting<00:25:50.468> where<00:25:50.612> there's<00:25:50.869> discussion<00:25:51.831> and<00:25:51.975> debate<00:25:52.712> as<00:25:52.808> opposed<00:25:53.113> to<00:25:53.257> just<00:25:53.834> a<00:25:53.979> one-sided<00:25:54.700> report<00:25:55.101> out.

00:25:55.902 --> 00:25:59.172
Reporting<00:25:56.383> happens<00:25:56.800> in<00:25:56.880> email<00:25:57.104> and<00:25:57.666> decks<00:25:57.906> that<00:25:58.018> are<00:25:58.082> sent<00:25:58.467> out<00:25:58.547> weeks<00:25:58.724> in<00:25:58.788> advance.

00:25:59.669 --> 00:26:03.180
Board<00:25:59.830> meetings<00:26:00.070> should<00:26:00.246> be<00:26:00.343> for<00:26:02.074> pivoting<00:26:02.811> choices.

00:26:03.356 --> 00:26:03.532
Yeah.

00:26:03.693 --> 00:26:04.542
What<00:26:03.757> do<00:26:03.837> we<00:26:03.997> do<00:26:04.110> differently?

00:26:05.135 --> 00:26:11.473
And<00:26:05.761> you<00:26:05.809> know,<00:26:06.177> you<00:26:06.322> have<00:26:06.482> to<00:26:06.642> use<00:26:06.803> your<00:26:06.899> relationship<00:26:07.460> skills<00:26:07.861> to<00:26:08.502> build<00:26:08.727> relationships<00:26:09.369> just<00:26:09.530> like<00:26:09.642> we<00:26:09.722> talked<00:26:09.963> about<00:26:10.188> with<00:26:10.349> your<00:26:10.493> peers<00:26:10.830> when<00:26:10.959> we<00:26:11.055> were<00:26:11.216> younger.

00:26:11.553 --> 00:26:12.838
And<00:26:12.099> they<00:26:12.195> are<00:26:12.436> people<00:26:12.741> too.

00:26:12.934 --> 00:26:14.347
They<00:26:13.079> have<00:26:13.320> things<00:26:13.577> that<00:26:13.721> keep<00:26:13.882> them<00:26:14.106> awake.

00:26:14.444 --> 00:26:19.438
And,<00:26:15.311> you<00:26:15.488> know,<00:26:15.648> I<00:26:15.712> ask<00:26:15.889> my<00:26:16.050> same<00:26:16.355> questions<00:26:16.853> of<00:26:16.933> them<00:26:17.190> as<00:26:17.318> I<00:26:17.415> do<00:26:17.559> of<00:26:17.655> other<00:26:17.816> people,<00:26:18.169> like,<00:26:18.378> you<00:26:18.539> know,<00:26:18.764> what's<00:26:18.924> going<00:26:19.004> on<00:26:19.181> with<00:26:19.342> you?

00:26:19.502 --> 00:26:20.225
What<00:26:19.566> are<00:26:19.647> you<00:26:19.727> worried<00:26:19.904> about?

00:26:20.687 --> 00:26:22.120
You<00:26:20.707> know,<00:26:21.108> what<00:26:21.269> feedback<00:26:21.670> do<00:26:21.734> you<00:26:21.815> have?

00:26:22.216 --> 00:26:26.937
And<00:26:22.714> it,<00:26:23.196> I<00:26:23.260> think<00:26:23.421> it's<00:26:23.581> more<00:26:23.694> similar<00:26:24.320> than<00:26:24.480> many<00:26:24.898> CEOs<00:26:26.568> think<00:26:26.745> it<00:26:26.825> is.

00:26:27.997 --> 00:26:31.466
Yeah,<00:26:28.495> I<00:26:28.640> think<00:26:28.736> it's<00:26:28.881> more<00:26:28.977> similar<00:26:29.362> than<00:26:29.523> different,<00:26:30.165> different<00:26:30.358> approach,<00:26:30.759> but<00:26:30.888> the<00:26:30.968> same<00:26:31.145> construct.

00:26:32.173 --> 00:26:32.365
Sure.

00:26:33.216 --> 00:26:42.594
Um,<00:26:33.618> how<00:26:33.730> much<00:26:33.955> of<00:26:34.035> your<00:26:34.180> time<00:26:34.373> are<00:26:34.501> you<00:26:34.678> thinking<00:26:35.224> of<00:26:36.043> things<00:26:36.524> and<00:26:36.669> events<00:26:37.327> and<00:26:37.873> what's<00:26:38.050> happening<00:26:38.451> in<00:26:38.596> the<00:26:38.772> world<00:26:39.158> outside<00:26:39.752> of<00:26:39.880> your<00:26:40.041> company<00:26:40.940> versus<00:26:41.341> what's<00:26:41.582> inside<00:26:41.983> of<00:26:42.064> your<00:26:42.224> company?

00:26:42.786 --> 00:26:55.599
And<00:26:42.931> to<00:26:43.011> give<00:26:43.107> you<00:26:43.172> some<00:26:43.348> context<00:26:43.750> to<00:26:43.814> that<00:26:43.910> question,<00:26:44.247> it<00:26:44.312> does<00:26:44.552> seem<00:26:44.793> like<00:26:45.741> more<00:26:46.062> leaders<00:26:46.415> and<00:26:46.543> CEOs<00:26:46.897> are<00:26:47.025> having<00:26:47.346> to<00:26:47.426> think<00:26:47.619> about<00:26:47.780> what's<00:26:48.005> going<00:26:48.245> on<00:26:48.390> in<00:26:48.470> the<00:26:48.647> world<00:26:49.514> more<00:26:49.690> and<00:26:49.835> more<00:26:50.895> versus<00:26:51.521> like<00:26:51.762> maybe<00:26:52.019> 20,<00:26:52.404> 30<00:26:52.661> years<00:26:52.918> ago,<00:26:53.142> you<00:26:53.303> could<00:26:53.464> really<00:26:53.704> just<00:26:53.945> focus<00:26:54.186> on<00:26:54.331> what's<00:26:54.588> going<00:26:54.828> on<00:26:54.989> in<00:26:55.069> your<00:26:55.230> company.

00:26:56.113 --> 00:26:57.751
That<00:26:56.273> no<00:26:56.370> longer<00:26:56.819> seems<00:26:57.108> to<00:26:57.221> be<00:26:57.317> the<00:26:57.478> case.

00:26:57.799 --> 00:26:59.918
How<00:26:58.024> often<00:26:58.280> are<00:26:58.425> you<00:26:58.762> looking<00:26:59.099> at<00:26:59.228> that?

00:27:00.914 --> 00:27:04.976
Um,<00:27:01.588> It's<00:27:03.659> a<00:27:03.900> really<00:27:04.205> wonderful<00:27:04.607> question.

00:27:05.490 --> 00:27:07.497
Uh,<00:27:05.843> more<00:27:06.165> than<00:27:06.373> I<00:27:06.470> used<00:27:06.695> to,<00:27:06.807> that's<00:27:07.096> for<00:27:07.192> sure.

00:27:07.578 --> 00:27:11.143
And<00:27:07.658> I<00:27:07.754> think<00:27:08.156> it,<00:27:08.397> it<00:27:08.477> encapsulates,<00:27:09.986> you<00:27:10.019> know,<00:27:10.227> the<00:27:10.308> morale<00:27:10.645> of<00:27:10.725> the<00:27:10.805> company.

00:27:11.287 --> 00:27:12.877
Where<00:27:11.528> is<00:27:11.689> people's<00:27:12.074> mindsets?

00:27:13.359 --> 00:27:24.262
You<00:27:13.391> know,<00:27:13.519> there<00:27:13.616> are<00:27:13.840> incidents<00:27:14.338> in<00:27:14.419> the<00:27:14.563> world<00:27:14.724> that<00:27:14.820> affect<00:27:15.125> our<00:27:15.286> business<00:27:15.623> too,<00:27:16.105> especially<00:27:16.426> in<00:27:16.506> public<00:27:16.827> safety,<00:27:17.293> whether<00:27:17.534> that<00:27:17.711> be,<00:27:17.951> you<00:27:18.353> know,<00:27:18.417> unfortunate<00:27:18.899> instance<00:27:19.236> in<00:27:19.316> law<00:27:19.461> enforcement<00:27:19.975> or<00:27:20.055> fire,<00:27:21.147> um,<00:27:21.484> and<00:27:21.629> tensions<00:27:22.030> that<00:27:22.127> exist<00:27:22.448> between<00:27:22.753> the<00:27:22.849> populace<00:27:23.251> and<00:27:23.411> those<00:27:23.797> agencies.

00:27:24.937 --> 00:27:35.698
The<00:27:25.981> education<00:27:26.607> markets,<00:27:27.169> obviously<00:27:27.667> with<00:27:27.924> higher<00:27:28.164> education,<00:27:28.775> those<00:27:29.032> lots<00:27:29.272> of<00:27:29.352> controversies<00:27:29.977> going<00:27:30.217> on<00:27:30.313> in<00:27:30.394> higher<00:27:30.714> ed,<00:27:31.275> and<00:27:31.339> we<00:27:31.371> think<00:27:31.531> about<00:27:31.740> how<00:27:31.836> that<00:27:32.012> impacts<00:27:32.397> our<00:27:32.541> customers,<00:27:33.518> and<00:27:33.662> we're<00:27:33.775> the<00:27:33.919> thought<00:27:34.223> leaders<00:27:34.624> that<00:27:34.704> are<00:27:34.800> trusted<00:27:35.201> to<00:27:35.297> work<00:27:35.505> with<00:27:35.601> them.

00:27:35.762 --> 00:27:39.896
So<00:27:35.922> we<00:27:36.082> pay<00:27:36.242> attention<00:27:36.707> to<00:27:36.787> what's<00:27:36.963> going<00:27:37.204> on<00:27:37.268> in<00:27:37.300> the<00:27:37.364> markets<00:27:38.245> because<00:27:38.486> we're<00:27:38.646> in<00:27:38.726> those<00:27:38.886> markets<00:27:39.271> with<00:27:39.367> our<00:27:39.447> customers.

00:27:40.873 --> 00:27:51.385
On<00:27:40.953> a<00:27:40.969> cultural<00:27:41.530> basis,<00:27:42.492> when<00:27:42.636> there<00:27:42.796> is<00:27:42.908> a<00:27:42.956> seminal<00:27:43.437> event<00:27:43.693> going<00:27:44.014> on,<00:27:44.895> irrespective<00:27:45.520> of<00:27:45.616> anybody's<00:27:46.113> opinions,<00:27:46.658> whether<00:27:46.818> that<00:27:46.978> be<00:27:47.139> politics<00:27:47.860> or<00:27:48.661> legal<00:27:48.901> events<00:27:49.302> or<00:27:49.382> catastrophes,<00:27:50.263> like,<00:27:50.488> you<00:27:50.584> have<00:27:50.744> to<00:27:50.808> acknowledge<00:27:51.289> them.

00:27:51.930 --> 00:27:59.725
And<00:27:52.010> I<00:27:52.042> don't,<00:27:52.346> I<00:27:52.362> don't<00:27:52.571> think<00:27:52.667> people<00:27:52.971> will<00:27:53.132> trust<00:27:53.532> you<00:27:53.933> or<00:27:54.189> be<00:27:54.510> in<00:27:54.654> the<00:27:54.830> boat<00:27:55.054> with<00:27:55.231> you<00:27:56.016> if<00:27:56.177> you<00:27:56.434> don't<00:27:56.835> engage<00:27:57.413> in<00:27:57.542> the<00:27:57.718> things<00:27:58.040> that<00:27:58.136> are<00:27:58.361> keeping<00:27:58.746> people<00:27:59.067> up<00:27:59.164> at<00:27:59.228> night.

00:28:00.271 --> 00:28:09.376
And<00:28:00.352> I<00:28:00.448> think<00:28:00.609> that<00:28:00.833> started<00:28:01.187> to<00:28:01.492> really<00:28:01.733> intensely<00:28:02.214> change<00:28:02.600> with<00:28:02.776> COVID<00:28:03.563> Like,<00:28:03.724> that<00:28:03.900> is<00:28:03.932> something<00:28:04.286> that<00:28:04.446> we<00:28:04.559> as<00:28:04.703> leaders<00:28:05.008> had<00:28:05.104> to<00:28:05.265> deal<00:28:05.490> with<00:28:05.666> because<00:28:05.907> people<00:28:06.212> were<00:28:06.550> appropriately<00:28:07.834> freaked<00:28:08.139> out<00:28:08.557> and<00:28:08.701> what<00:28:08.797> was<00:28:08.958> going<00:28:09.263> on.

00:28:09.424 --> 00:28:14.433
And<00:28:09.841> we<00:28:09.986> had<00:28:10.162> a<00:28:10.178> lot<00:28:10.548> of<00:28:10.708> energy<00:28:11.126> around<00:28:11.431> communicating<00:28:12.089> and<00:28:12.234> what<00:28:12.330> we're<00:28:12.490> doing<00:28:12.892> and<00:28:13.277> how<00:28:13.374> we're<00:28:13.534> keeping<00:28:13.855> people<00:28:14.112> safe.

00:28:14.498 --> 00:28:15.541
And<00:28:14.594> I<00:28:14.722> think<00:28:14.883> that<00:28:14.995> has<00:28:15.092> stuck.

00:28:16.023 --> 00:28:21.081
And<00:28:16.103> I<00:28:16.184> think<00:28:16.569> with<00:28:16.729> all<00:28:16.890> the<00:28:18.255> controversies<00:28:18.897> that<00:28:18.945> are<00:28:19.058> out<00:28:19.218> there,<00:28:19.796> you<00:28:19.941> have<00:28:20.117> to<00:28:20.262> be<00:28:20.374> aware<00:28:20.760> of<00:28:20.904> it.

00:28:21.707 --> 00:28:28.600
You<00:28:21.804> have<00:28:22.045> to<00:28:22.189> be<00:28:22.446> transparent<00:28:23.153> about<00:28:23.410> it<00:28:23.571> if<00:28:23.667> it<00:28:23.748> affects<00:28:24.053> your<00:28:24.198> company,<00:28:25.081> but<00:28:25.162> you<00:28:25.194> have<00:28:25.354> to<00:28:25.435> be<00:28:25.499> willing<00:28:25.740> to<00:28:25.820> talk<00:28:26.142> about<00:28:27.025> it<00:28:27.588> without<00:28:27.909> being<00:28:28.150> divisive.

00:28:29.158 --> 00:28:29.676
It<00:28:29.178> shouldn't<00:28:29.339> matter.

00:28:29.837 --> 00:28:35.477
Like,<00:28:30.062> we're<00:28:30.624> a<00:28:30.705> diverse<00:28:31.106> team,<00:28:32.263> diverse<00:28:32.713> in<00:28:33.532> color,<00:28:33.870> sexual<00:28:34.175> orientation,<00:28:35.043> all<00:28:35.155> forms.

00:28:35.541 --> 00:28:39.493
We're<00:28:35.605> also<00:28:35.846> diverse<00:28:36.248> in<00:28:36.890> age<00:28:37.308> and<00:28:37.613> geography<00:28:38.353> and<00:28:38.915> politics.

00:28:39.558 --> 00:28:43.221
And,<00:28:39.799> you<00:28:39.863> know,<00:28:40.023> we<00:28:40.264> are<00:28:40.763> a<00:28:40.923> replicate—<00:28:41.646> a<00:28:41.951> replica<00:28:42.273> of<00:28:42.369> the<00:28:42.594> country<00:28:42.867> as<00:28:42.996> a<00:28:43.076> whole.

00:28:43.414 --> 00:28:50.322
And<00:28:43.494> so<00:28:43.655> it<00:28:43.799> takes<00:28:43.992> a<00:28:44.121> lot<00:28:44.297> of<00:28:44.378> different<00:28:44.683> people,<00:28:45.567> and<00:28:45.984> I<00:28:46.065> don't<00:28:46.225> think<00:28:46.402> it<00:28:46.707> makes<00:28:46.932> a<00:28:46.948> lot<00:28:47.013> of<00:28:47.109> sense<00:28:47.430> to<00:28:47.978> sit<00:28:48.140> here<00:28:48.237> and<00:28:48.318> tell<00:28:48.560> people<00:28:48.883> what<00:28:49.191> you<00:28:49.368> think<00:28:49.692> as<00:28:49.772> a<00:28:49.853> CEO.

00:28:50.419 --> 00:28:55.851
I<00:28:50.581> don't<00:28:50.904> think<00:28:51.728> a<00:28:51.793> social<00:28:52.278> platform<00:28:53.232> as<00:28:53.329> a<00:28:53.410> per<00:28:53.571> se<00:28:54.363> is<00:28:54.412> something<00:28:54.703> that<00:28:54.848> I<00:28:55.333> delve<00:28:55.592> into.

00:28:56.481 --> 00:29:06.827
My<00:28:56.562> politics<00:28:56.982> are<00:28:57.047> my<00:28:57.209> politics<00:28:57.532> or<00:28:57.597> whatever,<00:28:57.936> but<00:28:58.340> I<00:28:58.421> do<00:28:58.518> think<00:28:58.744> you<00:28:58.890> have<00:28:59.714> a<00:28:59.779> strong<00:29:00.523> role<00:29:02.777> to<00:29:02.940> acknowledge<00:29:03.981> when<00:29:04.160> people<00:29:04.485> are<00:29:04.566> stressed,<00:29:04.973> to<00:29:05.054> acknowledge<00:29:05.624> about<00:29:05.933> the<00:29:06.030> things<00:29:06.274> around<00:29:06.600> them.

00:29:07.397 --> 00:29:09.104
And<00:29:08.145> I<00:29:08.226> just<00:29:08.470> try<00:29:08.633> to<00:29:08.714> be<00:29:08.795> myself.

00:29:10.400 --> 00:29:10.823
What<00:29:10.481> is<00:29:10.514> your<00:29:10.677> thought?

00:29:10.921 --> 00:29:13.578
And<00:29:11.003> by<00:29:11.100> the<00:29:11.231> way,<00:29:11.329> I'm<00:29:11.492> not<00:29:11.818> trying<00:29:12.062> to<00:29:12.144> get<00:29:12.372> you<00:29:12.535> to<00:29:12.779> weigh<00:29:13.040> in<00:29:13.105> on<00:29:13.203> something<00:29:13.301> politically.

00:29:13.670 --> 00:29:16.298
Political<00:29:14.022> or<00:29:14.182> anything<00:29:14.567> like<00:29:14.743> that,<00:29:15.064> or<00:29:15.096> don't<00:29:15.432> worry<00:29:15.705> about<00:29:16.105> it.

00:29:16.490 --> 00:29:18.413
But<00:29:16.826> don't<00:29:17.227> worry,<00:29:18.028> I<00:29:18.189> won't.

00:29:18.814 --> 00:29:40.979
Yeah,<00:29:18.990> but<00:29:19.230> I,<00:29:19.455> I<00:29:19.615> wonder,<00:29:20.496> um,<00:29:21.794> what<00:29:22.019> your<00:29:22.195> thinking<00:29:22.660> has<00:29:22.900> been<00:29:23.252> or<00:29:23.461> how<00:29:23.701> you've<00:29:23.877> thought<00:29:24.054> about<00:29:25.159> this<00:29:25.384> whole<00:29:25.624> diversity,<00:29:26.201> equity,<00:29:26.586> inclusion<00:29:27.868> debate<00:29:28.348> happening<00:29:28.781> in<00:29:28.909> the<00:29:29.070> world<00:29:30.127> and<00:29:30.207> that<00:29:30.448> becoming<00:29:30.848> like<00:29:31.089> a<00:29:31.169> political<00:29:31.810> thing,<00:29:32.194> because<00:29:32.371> that<00:29:32.531> used<00:29:32.755> to<00:29:32.835> just<00:29:33.172> live<00:29:33.573> in<00:29:33.717> the<00:29:33.813> business<00:29:34.294> world,<00:29:35.319> and<00:29:35.416> now,<00:29:35.832> or<00:29:36.297> as<00:29:36.601> I<00:29:36.633> understand<00:29:37.098> it,<00:29:37.723> and<00:29:37.899> now<00:29:38.140> it's<00:29:38.300> become<00:29:39.486> whole<00:29:39.727> different<00:29:40.385> thing.

00:29:41.092 --> 00:29:44.752
Like,<00:29:41.252> those<00:29:41.509> words<00:29:41.830> don't<00:29:41.991> even<00:29:42.312> mean<00:29:42.552> the<00:29:42.649> same<00:29:42.954> thing<00:29:43.740> to<00:29:44.174> certain<00:29:44.479> people.

00:29:45.924 --> 00:29:46.148
Yeah.

00:29:46.389 --> 00:29:48.011
I<00:29:46.486> think<00:29:46.630> about<00:29:46.758> a<00:29:46.791> lot<00:29:46.887> in<00:29:46.967> the<00:29:47.047> context<00:29:47.449> of<00:29:47.513> our<00:29:47.609> business.

00:29:48.412 --> 00:29:57.450
So,<00:29:49.536> diversity,<00:29:49.857> equity,<00:29:50.097> and<00:29:50.274> inclusion<00:29:50.820> has—<00:29:51.462> there's<00:29:51.639> a<00:29:51.703> fair<00:29:51.944> amount<00:29:52.184> of<00:29:52.329> training<00:29:52.666> around<00:29:52.987> it<00:29:53.083> that<00:29:53.228> some<00:29:53.372> institutions<00:29:53.934> have<00:29:54.030> put<00:29:54.207> in<00:29:54.335> place,<00:29:54.592> both<00:29:54.833> in<00:29:54.978> commercial<00:29:55.459> entities<00:29:55.957> and<00:29:56.519> education<00:29:57.064> entities.

00:29:57.947 --> 00:30:06.359
And<00:29:58.188> those<00:29:58.750> decisions,<00:29:59.649> purchase<00:30:00.050> decisions,<00:30:00.532> we<00:30:00.628> were<00:30:00.692> talking<00:30:01.014> earlier<00:30:01.254> about<00:30:01.495> sales<00:30:01.688> cycles,<00:30:02.539> are<00:30:02.683> directly<00:30:03.100> related<00:30:03.566> to<00:30:03.759> the<00:30:03.887> political<00:30:04.304> climate<00:30:04.722> in<00:30:04.850> which<00:30:05.011> that<00:30:05.091> environment,<00:30:05.621> that<00:30:05.846> debate<00:30:06.086> is<00:30:06.215> having.

00:30:07.433 --> 00:30:14.872
And,<00:30:07.675> you<00:30:07.756> know,<00:30:08.079> I<00:30:08.111> don't<00:30:08.321> think<00:30:08.466> this<00:30:08.643> is<00:30:08.708> controversial<00:30:09.160> to<00:30:09.208> say,<00:30:09.386> it<00:30:09.515> seems<00:30:09.692> to<00:30:09.773> be<00:30:09.934> very<00:30:10.096> much<00:30:10.257> a<00:30:10.322> state-by-state<00:30:11.225> issue<00:30:11.548> at<00:30:11.629> this<00:30:11.855> point,<00:30:12.500> where<00:30:12.597> certain<00:30:12.904> states<00:30:13.242> are<00:30:13.468> embracing<00:30:13.904> it<00:30:13.985> and<00:30:14.065> certain<00:30:14.307> ones<00:30:14.533> are<00:30:14.614> not.

00:30:15.179 --> 00:30:20.610
And<00:30:15.340> it<00:30:15.502> mostly<00:30:15.840> manifests<00:30:16.308> itself<00:30:16.793> in<00:30:17.035> the<00:30:17.181> higher<00:30:17.424> education<00:30:17.909> clients<00:30:18.718> that<00:30:18.815> we<00:30:18.960> work<00:30:19.203> with<00:30:19.446> and<00:30:19.543> what<00:30:19.705> their<00:30:20.012> attitudes<00:30:20.497> are.

00:30:20.675 --> 00:30:24.849
And<00:30:21.080> kind<00:30:21.306> of,<00:30:21.872> we,<00:30:22.535> we<00:30:22.616> try<00:30:22.778> to<00:30:22.875> satisfy<00:30:23.490> all<00:30:23.587> of<00:30:23.652> our<00:30:23.813> customers<00:30:24.202> and<00:30:24.315> all<00:30:24.396> of<00:30:24.493> our<00:30:24.622> prospects.

00:30:25.986 --> 00:30:34.239
So<00:30:28.134> we<00:30:28.214> always<00:30:28.521> come<00:30:28.683> back<00:30:28.925> to<00:30:29.167> what<00:30:29.571> is<00:30:29.749> the<00:30:29.830> needs<00:30:30.879> and<00:30:31.041> what<00:30:31.186> are<00:30:31.219> the<00:30:31.348> questions<00:30:31.832> that<00:30:31.994> we<00:30:32.026> need<00:30:32.171> to<00:30:32.398> ask<00:30:32.575> of<00:30:32.640> our<00:30:32.801> customers<00:30:33.302> and<00:30:33.447> what<00:30:33.544> is<00:30:33.690> keeping<00:30:33.948> them<00:30:34.077> up<00:30:34.126> at<00:30:34.190> night.

00:30:34.906 --> 00:30:40.738
What<00:30:35.066> are<00:30:35.098> they<00:30:35.322> doing<00:30:35.723> to<00:30:36.508> manage<00:30:36.845> their<00:30:37.005> enrollment,<00:30:37.486> to<00:30:37.646> keep<00:30:37.806> their<00:30:37.902> students<00:30:38.287> safe,<00:30:38.607> to<00:30:38.752> keep<00:30:38.912> them<00:30:39.072> productive,<00:30:39.649> as<00:30:39.793> well<00:30:39.873> as<00:30:39.985> their<00:30:40.130> faculty?

00:30:41.331 --> 00:30:43.559
And<00:30:41.492> if<00:30:41.652> that<00:30:41.876> is<00:30:42.036> one<00:30:42.197> of<00:30:42.293> their<00:30:42.533> goals,<00:30:42.934> we<00:30:43.078> can<00:30:43.238> help<00:30:43.431> them.

00:30:44.039 --> 00:30:49.071
And<00:30:44.120> if<00:30:44.216> that<00:30:44.360> is<00:30:44.472> not<00:30:44.760> one<00:30:44.873> of<00:30:44.937> their<00:30:45.097> goals,<00:30:45.482> we<00:30:46.603> respectfully<00:30:47.260> understand<00:30:47.725> that<00:30:47.917> and<00:30:48.045> we<00:30:48.206> help<00:30:48.382> them<00:30:48.542> in<00:30:48.622> other<00:30:48.783> ways.

00:30:49.568 --> 00:30:51.426
So,<00:30:49.904> you<00:30:50.145> know,<00:30:50.465> that's<00:30:50.625> the<00:30:50.705> way<00:30:50.850> we<00:30:50.882> think<00:30:51.042> about<00:30:51.250> it<00:30:51.330> here.

00:30:52.388 --> 00:30:58.797
What<00:30:52.452> are<00:30:52.532> your<00:30:52.692> thoughts<00:30:52.949> on<00:30:53.029> the<00:30:53.173> current<00:30:53.654> macroeconomic<00:30:55.096> environment<00:30:56.057> in,<00:30:56.554> you<00:30:56.634> know,<00:30:56.955> the<00:30:57.019> United<00:30:57.275> States<00:30:57.596> and<00:30:57.676> the<00:30:57.756> rest<00:30:57.916> of<00:30:57.980> the<00:30:58.060> world,<00:30:58.381> obviously?

00:30:59.503 --> 00:31:12.137
Um,<00:30:59.823> but<00:30:59.919> particularly<00:31:00.304> in<00:31:00.336> the<00:31:00.368> United<00:31:00.640> States,<00:31:00.865> how<00:31:01.041> are<00:31:01.425> you<00:31:01.490> feeling<00:31:01.746> about<00:31:02.501> inflation<00:31:03.593> and<00:31:03.770> money,<00:31:04.798> uh,<00:31:05.199> being<00:31:05.376> a<00:31:05.408> little<00:31:05.617> bit<00:31:05.761> harder<00:31:06.018> to<00:31:06.099> get<00:31:06.404> than<00:31:06.500> maybe<00:31:06.741> it<00:31:06.821> was<00:31:07.062> 5<00:31:07.287> years<00:31:07.528> ago,<00:31:07.849> interest<00:31:08.122> rates<00:31:08.411> up,<00:31:09.455> um,<00:31:09.712> how<00:31:09.857> are<00:31:10.033> you<00:31:10.178> thinking<00:31:10.419> about<00:31:10.660> that<00:31:10.836> going<00:31:11.222> into<00:31:11.575> 2024?

00:31:12.201 --> 00:31:14.562
I<00:31:12.218> mean,<00:31:12.346> we're<00:31:12.442> already<00:31:12.683> in,<00:31:13.310> uh,<00:31:13.486> we're<00:31:13.631> a<00:31:13.711> quarter<00:31:14.032> in,<00:31:14.289> but—.

00:31:15.092 --> 00:31:15.943
Oh<00:31:15.108> my<00:31:15.269> God,<00:31:15.510> that's<00:31:15.719> crazy.

00:31:16.216 --> 00:31:17.325
I<00:31:16.281> can't<00:31:16.457> believe<00:31:16.634> it's<00:31:16.779> almost<00:31:17.084> April.

00:31:17.726 --> 00:31:19.717
Uh,<00:31:18.047> listen,<00:31:18.465> cost<00:31:18.722> of<00:31:18.850> capital<00:31:19.155> is<00:31:19.268> a<00:31:19.332> real<00:31:19.444> thing.

00:31:19.910 --> 00:31:22.528
It<00:31:20.215> impacts<00:31:20.633> our<00:31:20.793> employees<00:31:21.436> and<00:31:21.677> how<00:31:21.837> they<00:31:21.982> pay<00:31:22.078> their<00:31:22.239> bills.

00:31:22.576 --> 00:31:29.063
It<00:31:22.705> impacts<00:31:24.086> debt<00:31:24.311> capacity<00:31:24.953> as<00:31:25.049> we<00:31:25.210> think<00:31:25.371> about<00:31:25.772> borrowing<00:31:26.174> costs<00:31:26.479> to<00:31:26.655> acquire<00:31:27.041> companies<00:31:27.619> and<00:31:27.763> what<00:31:27.860> our<00:31:28.422> world<00:31:28.662> is<00:31:28.822> like.

00:31:29.960 --> 00:31:35.154
So<00:31:30.746> it<00:31:30.826> has<00:31:30.986> certainly<00:31:31.547> eased<00:31:31.708> up<00:31:31.868> a<00:31:31.884> little<00:31:32.188> bit<00:31:32.429> than<00:31:32.733> kind<00:31:32.910> of<00:31:32.990> at<00:31:33.086> its<00:31:33.375> worst,<00:31:34.032> probably<00:31:34.433> a<00:31:34.577> year<00:31:34.753> or<00:31:34.833> so<00:31:34.994> ago.

00:31:35.234 --> 00:31:44.146
And,<00:31:35.779> you<00:31:35.811> know,<00:31:35.939> we<00:31:36.035> look<00:31:36.212> at<00:31:36.340> the<00:31:36.420> M&A<00:31:36.612> market<00:31:37.013> and<00:31:37.141> kind<00:31:37.318> of<00:31:37.478> things<00:31:37.702> that<00:31:37.815> are<00:31:37.895> for<00:31:38.103> sale<00:31:38.440> and<00:31:38.584> what's<00:31:38.824> out<00:31:39.001> there,<00:31:39.177> and<00:31:39.305> you<00:31:39.401> could<00:31:39.562> see<00:31:39.802> the<00:31:39.962> volume<00:31:40.459> of<00:31:40.668> things<00:31:41.068> kind<00:31:41.149> of<00:31:41.325> creating<00:31:41.742> a<00:31:41.870> little<00:31:41.982> bit,<00:31:42.848> a<00:31:42.912> little<00:31:43.072> bit<00:31:43.184> of<00:31:43.248> easement<00:31:43.569> in<00:31:43.713> that.

00:31:44.370 --> 00:31:47.801
That<00:31:44.531> being<00:31:44.755> said,<00:31:45.476> and,<00:31:45.717> you<00:31:45.749> know,<00:31:46.374> the<00:31:46.454> nuanced<00:31:46.839> answer<00:31:47.095> is<00:31:47.191> it's<00:31:47.416> different.

00:31:47.961 --> 00:31:55.927
You<00:31:47.993> know,<00:31:48.217> it's<00:31:48.378> different<00:31:48.778> in<00:31:48.858> a<00:31:48.923> commercial<00:31:49.339> environment<00:31:49.820> with<00:31:49.900> somebody<00:31:50.221> doing<00:31:50.445> an<00:31:50.766> EC<00:31:50.942> than<00:31:51.038> it<00:31:51.167> is<00:31:51.343> in<00:31:51.423> a<00:31:51.984> K-12<00:31:52.625> school<00:31:53.106> in<00:31:53.507> Texas<00:31:53.972> or<00:31:54.052> New<00:31:54.212> York<00:31:54.549> or<00:31:54.693> California<00:31:55.270> or<00:31:55.510> wherever.

00:31:56.312 --> 00:32:02.873
As<00:31:56.472> well<00:31:56.713> as<00:31:56.954> for,<00:31:57.339> you<00:31:57.419> know,<00:31:57.900> the<00:31:57.996> government<00:31:58.317> institutions<00:31:58.799> which<00:31:58.975> are<00:31:59.039> directly<00:31:59.424> related<00:31:59.857> to,<00:32:00.563> you<00:32:00.659> know,<00:32:00.804> continuing<00:32:01.205> resolutions<00:32:02.007> or<00:32:02.167> passing<00:32:02.569> budgets.

00:32:02.970 --> 00:32:11.247
So<00:32:04.253> I<00:32:04.333> try<00:32:04.734> very<00:32:04.927> much<00:32:05.617> to<00:32:06.098> acknowledge<00:32:06.659> the<00:32:06.740> nuances<00:32:08.023> of<00:32:08.167> what's<00:32:08.344> going<00:32:08.729> on<00:32:08.905> in<00:32:09.066> different<00:32:09.451> markets<00:32:09.868> and<00:32:10.012> different<00:32:10.333> geographies<00:32:10.766> in<00:32:10.830> our<00:32:10.975> country.

00:32:12.258 --> 00:32:16.862
And<00:32:12.418> to<00:32:12.515> recognize<00:32:12.996> that,<00:32:13.237> you<00:32:13.317> know,<00:32:13.557> there<00:32:13.782> is<00:32:14.360> a<00:32:14.376> macro<00:32:15.162> view<00:32:15.563> that<00:32:15.787> the<00:32:15.819> economy<00:32:16.365> is<00:32:16.509> growing.

00:32:16.910 --> 00:32:22.605
At<00:32:16.942> the<00:32:17.023> same<00:32:17.311> time,<00:32:17.568> there<00:32:17.648> are<00:32:17.809> pockets<00:32:18.226> of<00:32:18.370> pain<00:32:18.691> and<00:32:18.771> challenges<00:32:19.333> that<00:32:19.798> some<00:32:19.958> of<00:32:20.039> our<00:32:20.135> customers<00:32:20.616> are<00:32:20.696> going<00:32:20.937> through<00:32:21.178> and<00:32:21.258> some<00:32:21.402> of<00:32:21.498> our<00:32:21.579> employees<00:32:22.060> are<00:32:22.140> going<00:32:22.381> through.

00:32:23.025 --> 00:32:28.247
And<00:32:23.122> so,<00:32:23.898> you<00:32:23.931> know,<00:32:24.319> I<00:32:24.335> know<00:32:24.496> it's<00:32:24.658> not<00:32:24.804> an<00:32:24.949> easy<00:32:25.192> answer<00:32:25.450> to<00:32:25.547> say<00:32:25.757> it's<00:32:25.919> not<00:32:26.081> one<00:32:26.242> size<00:32:26.501> fits<00:32:26.727> all<00:32:26.824> and<00:32:26.986> there's<00:32:27.148> nuance,<00:32:27.552> but<00:32:27.697> that's<00:32:27.859> the<00:32:27.956> truth.

00:32:28.829 --> 00:32:32.891
And<00:32:29.152> I<00:32:29.314> think<00:32:29.492> that's<00:32:29.896> why<00:32:30.058> we're<00:32:30.138> in<00:32:30.219> the<00:32:30.300> jobs<00:32:30.543> we<00:32:30.688> have<00:32:30.866> to<00:32:30.915> help<00:32:31.109> provide<00:32:31.820> leadership<00:32:32.224> through<00:32:32.370> that<00:32:32.561> nuance.

00:32:34.590 --> 00:32:37.083
Who's<00:32:34.771> a<00:32:34.788> leader<00:32:35.283> or<00:32:35.448> an<00:32:35.514> example<00:32:35.944> of<00:32:36.043> a<00:32:36.109> leader<00:32:36.423> that<00:32:36.588> you<00:32:36.704> admire?

00:32:42.202 --> 00:32:44.407
There's<00:32:42.429> a<00:32:42.526> couple<00:32:42.931> people<00:32:43.483> that<00:32:43.726> stuck<00:32:44.213> out.

00:32:44.472 --> 00:32:45.607
They're<00:32:44.618> not<00:32:44.715> going<00:32:44.829> to<00:32:44.959> be<00:32:45.040> famous.

00:32:45.769 --> 00:32:48.088
I'm<00:32:45.932> not<00:32:46.159> a—<00:32:47.002> I<00:32:47.051> kind<00:32:47.213> of<00:32:47.245> stick<00:32:47.456> that<00:32:47.618> to<00:32:47.699> my<00:32:47.959> books.

00:32:48.612 --> 00:32:52.203

00:33:12.178 --> 00:33:14.037
And<00:33:12.434> to<00:33:12.562> this<00:33:12.739> day,<00:33:12.915> I'm<00:33:13.059> incredibly<00:33:13.765> grateful<00:33:13.973> to<00:33:14.005> her.

00:33:14.166 --> 00:33:20.611

00:33:20.675 --> 00:33:22.439
And<00:33:21.060> she<00:33:21.140> had<00:33:21.252> a<00:33:21.396> tremendous<00:33:21.797> influence<00:33:22.198> on<00:33:22.278> me.

00:33:22.904 --> 00:33:30.199
Uh,<00:33:23.000> the<00:33:23.064> second<00:33:23.401> person,<00:33:23.962> uh,<00:33:24.170> was<00:33:24.539> a<00:33:24.587> gentleman<00:33:24.828> named<00:33:24.924> Larry<00:33:25.389> who<00:33:25.469> I<00:33:25.565> worked<00:33:25.789> for<00:33:26.303> from<00:33:27.890> 2002<00:33:29.333> through<00:33:29.557> 2015.

00:33:30.936 --> 00:33:38.391
Really<00:33:31.096> got<00:33:31.321> me<00:33:31.401> into<00:33:31.513> the<00:33:31.577> world<00:33:31.754> of<00:33:31.818> private<00:33:32.139> equity<00:33:32.379> venture<00:33:32.620> capital,<00:33:33.501> held<00:33:33.726> me<00:33:33.822> to<00:33:33.998> an<00:33:34.079> incredibly<00:33:34.608> high<00:33:34.720> standard,<00:33:35.506> taught<00:33:35.810> me<00:33:35.987> a<00:33:36.067> tremendous<00:33:36.468> amount<00:33:36.708> about<00:33:36.932> P&L<00:33:37.205> management,<00:33:37.670> people<00:33:37.975> management.

00:33:39.113 --> 00:33:45.610
And<00:33:39.193> listen,<00:33:39.370> I'll<00:33:39.626> say<00:33:39.658> the<00:33:39.738> first<00:33:39.915> thing,<00:33:40.299> from<00:33:40.460> all<00:33:40.556> these<00:33:40.780> leaders<00:33:41.037> you<00:33:41.117> take<00:33:41.293> some<00:33:41.438> things<00:33:41.678> you<00:33:41.758> want<00:33:41.903> to<00:33:41.983> emulate<00:33:42.336> and<00:33:42.464> some<00:33:42.560> things<00:33:42.704> you<00:33:42.865> don't<00:33:43.025> want<00:33:43.201> to<00:33:43.298> So,<00:33:43.458> none<00:33:43.619> of<00:33:43.667> these<00:33:43.763> people<00:33:44.020> are<00:33:44.229> perfect<00:33:44.582> or<00:33:44.968> anything<00:33:45.273> like<00:33:45.433> that.

00:33:45.931 --> 00:33:46.910
And<00:33:45.995> the<00:33:46.075> last<00:33:46.268> is<00:33:46.413> my<00:33:46.557> father.

00:33:47.135 --> 00:33:50.716
I<00:33:47.215> grew<00:33:47.440> up<00:33:47.601> in<00:33:47.761> a<00:33:48.083> business<00:33:48.404> household<00:33:48.821> where<00:33:48.934> my<00:33:49.062> dad<00:33:49.367> ran<00:33:49.624> advertising<00:33:50.186> agencies.

00:33:51.390 --> 00:33:55.308
And<00:33:51.535> so,<00:33:51.615> I<00:33:51.776> grew<00:33:52.032> up<00:33:52.354> listening<00:33:52.675> to<00:33:52.835> pitches<00:33:53.397> and<00:33:53.622> HR<00:33:53.959> matters<00:33:54.441> at<00:33:54.537> the<00:33:54.666> dinner<00:33:54.907> table.

00:33:56.111 --> 00:33:57.765
And<00:33:56.593> I<00:33:56.689> lost<00:33:56.930> my<00:33:57.010> dad<00:33:57.235> this<00:33:57.331> past<00:33:57.636> year.

00:33:58.471 --> 00:34:03.722
So,<00:33:59.980> I<00:34:00.061> think<00:34:00.221> a<00:34:00.237> lot<00:34:00.478> about<00:34:00.703> the<00:34:00.848> lessons<00:34:01.345> and<00:34:01.490> the<00:34:01.570> little<00:34:01.827> idioms<00:34:02.293> that<00:34:02.373> came<00:34:02.550> out<00:34:02.710> of<00:34:02.774> his<00:34:02.951> mouth<00:34:03.112> for<00:34:03.272> all<00:34:03.417> those<00:34:03.577> years.

00:34:03.834 --> 00:34:08.346
One<00:34:04.316> of<00:34:04.348> my<00:34:04.412> favorites,<00:34:04.862> which<00:34:04.926> I'll<00:34:05.038> share<00:34:05.263> with<00:34:05.376> you<00:34:05.456> and<00:34:05.584> the<00:34:05.681> audience,<00:34:06.002> is<00:34:06.869> only<00:34:07.045> morons<00:34:07.511> are<00:34:07.591> always<00:34:07.848> at<00:34:07.929> their<00:34:08.089> best.

00:34:08.956 --> 00:34:10.515
You<00:34:09.294> have<00:34:09.679> to<00:34:09.776> have<00:34:10.017> a<00:34:10.177> bad<00:34:10.418> day.

00:34:11.061 --> 00:34:13.150
Like,<00:34:11.463> it's<00:34:12.170> hard,<00:34:12.427> you<00:34:12.459> know,<00:34:12.587> today's<00:34:12.909> rough.

00:34:13.230 --> 00:34:15.158
Like,<00:34:13.616> okay,<00:34:13.953> like<00:34:14.435> tomorrow's<00:34:14.741> gonna<00:34:14.837> be<00:34:14.917> better.

00:34:15.239 --> 00:34:17.745
Like,<00:34:15.785> not<00:34:16.106> everyone's<00:34:16.540> gonna<00:34:16.749> be<00:34:16.845> in<00:34:16.942> a<00:34:17.006> great<00:34:17.247> mood<00:34:17.472> every<00:34:17.649> day.

00:34:17.825 --> 00:34:19.882
You're<00:34:17.986> not<00:34:18.115> always<00:34:18.291> gonna<00:34:18.452> say<00:34:18.773> the<00:34:18.918> right<00:34:19.095> thing<00:34:19.272> at<00:34:19.400> the<00:34:19.497> right<00:34:19.721> time.

00:34:19.979 --> 00:34:23.513
You're<00:34:20.059> not<00:34:20.203> always<00:34:20.396> gonna<00:34:20.541> have<00:34:20.718> a<00:34:20.846> great<00:34:21.103> month<00:34:21.360> or<00:34:21.505> a<00:34:21.585> great<00:34:21.810> quarter,<00:34:22.951> and<00:34:23.096> that's<00:34:23.272> okay.

00:34:23.674 --> 00:34:26.132
In<00:34:23.754> order<00:34:23.915> to<00:34:23.995> have<00:34:24.092> a<00:34:24.220> great<00:34:24.510> day,<00:34:24.863> you<00:34:24.959> probably<00:34:25.265> have<00:34:25.425> to<00:34:25.506> have<00:34:25.682> a<00:34:25.763> bad<00:34:25.988> one.

00:34:26.486 --> 00:34:29.073
And<00:34:26.566> those<00:34:26.791> little<00:34:26.968> things<00:34:27.787> stick<00:34:28.109> with<00:34:28.253> me<00:34:28.655> a<00:34:28.800> lot.

00:34:30.567 --> 00:34:31.162
That's<00:34:30.808> beautiful.

00:34:31.627 --> 00:34:40.309
Well,<00:34:31.740> this<00:34:31.933> kind<00:34:32.126> of,<00:34:32.334> you<00:34:32.431> kind<00:34:32.656> of<00:34:33.090> maybe<00:34:33.475> answered<00:34:33.748> our<00:34:33.877> final<00:34:34.198> question,<00:34:34.680> which<00:34:34.969> is,<00:34:35.388> um,<00:34:35.646> at<00:34:35.791> CEO.com,<00:34:37.098> we<00:34:37.243> believe<00:34:37.421> the<00:34:37.566> chances<00:34:37.905> one<00:34:38.131> gives<00:34:38.389> is<00:34:38.469> just<00:34:38.599> as<00:34:38.695> important<00:34:39.034> as<00:34:39.115> the<00:34:39.260> chances<00:34:39.599> one<00:34:39.825> takes.

00:34:41.051 --> 00:34:46.010
And<00:34:41.131> we<00:34:41.277> end<00:34:41.438> every<00:34:41.777> interview<00:34:42.083> with<00:34:42.164> this<00:34:42.406> question,<00:34:42.890> and<00:34:42.987> that<00:34:43.213> is,<00:34:43.471> who<00:34:43.632> gave<00:34:43.939> you<00:34:44.116> a<00:34:44.197> chance<00:34:44.682> to<00:34:44.831> get<00:34:45.014> you<00:34:45.180> to<00:34:45.329> where<00:34:45.512> you<00:34:45.678> are<00:34:45.844> today?

Yeah,<00:34:50.005> that's,<00:34:50.294> you<00:34:50.326> know,<00:34:50.407> it's<00:34:50.551> kind<00:34:50.728> of<00:34:50.808> the<00:34:50.873> same<00:34:51.130> answer.
