Guidelines for Mentors

To ensure a positive, fulfilling experience for both mentors and entrepreneurs, it is important that we set some expectations and guidelines for this engagement. Designed to facilitate meaningful knowledge exchange and to balance business growth with cultural realities, these guidelines ensure productive mentor-mentee relationships while acknowledging the unique challenges and opportunities that exist within emerging market economies.

Adherence to these principles will maximise the programme's impact on each project and improve chances of a meaningful outcome for both partners.

Mentors should strive to:

  1. Understand and support the goals of the individual

Mentors should avoid the temptation to hijack a project with their own ideas. These entrepreneurs will rarely say no to avoid offence but will likely begin to disengage.

  2. Work within the local cultural context

Some business standards and practices may not apply. Show openness to criticism, as in many cultures, disagreeing with authority figures is considered disrespectful. Create a safe space for honest feedback.

  3. Be professional but kind and patient

While punctuality and regular measurable progress should be prioritised, bear in mind that some cultures do not place the same emphasis on planning and timeliness. A little patience goes a long way.

  4. Be committed

Seek to work past shortfalls and disappointments. This is a mutual learning process.

  5. Ask questions

Seek understanding of local market conditions, permits, regulatory frameworks and economic circumstances to ensure informed decision-making.

  6. Document the process

This is a journey. Keep records, photos, data and metrics to show growth and tell your joint story.

  7. Feel free to use your resources and network to the extent you are comfortable and no further

Report any inappropriate requests for funds that you have not volunteered.

Do not make promises that you are unable to deliver.

  8. Follow responsible and sustainable business practices

Do not pursue business ideas that cause harm to the individual, their community or the environment.
