Charlie Hernandez wants to give lawyers more work
Charlie Hernandez is the founder and CEO of My Pocket Lawyer, a platform that takes a legal question in any language, runs it against case law, statutes, and state and federal databases, and returns an answer a layperson can read. When the question is more than software should handle, it passes the user to a lawyer along with everything the lawyer would otherwise spend the first billable hour extracting. He is a California attorney. He has three degrees from Harvard, including the JD and the MBA. He grew up in East Los Angeles in a family of lawyers who became entrepreneurs, which is roughly the arc he has followed himself.
He wants people to understand a number. In low-income communities, he said, 92 percent of civil legal problems get handled without a lawyer. Nationally, it is 84 percent. In eviction cases and custody cases, it is close to all of them. Everybody knows the line from the back of the squad car about a lawyer being appointed if you can't afford one. Almost nobody knows that the Sixth Amendment stops at criminal court. "For things like landlord-tenant law, as I mentioned, maybe your employer stopped paying your salary, and all sorts of issues that we have to face on a daily basis, and as citizens of the country, you're not guaranteed a lawyer," he said. "And often, people end up going to court themselves and self-representing. And especially when the opposing counsel or the opposing party has counsel, you're not going to face a very good outcome."
He has a way of making the abstraction concrete. Walk into a courthouse, he said, and depending on the room, about nine in 10 people there are representing themselves. "You need to do nothing else than sit and watch for a few minutes to understand how, unfortunately, poorly equipped they are to be in that position. But it's a position that we as a society have forced them into."
The freeway
The obvious objection to a product that answers legal questions for free is that lawyers will hate it, and some do. On TechCrunch's Found podcast, Hernandez said some of what he's heard from the profession has not been pretty. He also said, on the CEO.com Podcast, that the regulatory drag in legal tech comes less from big technology companies than from bar associations, which is to say from lawyers protecting the one thing lawyers get paid for.
His answer is a story about traffic. About 10 years ago, Los Angeles added two lanes in each direction to the 405. Everyone assumed the freeway would clear. Instead, people who had been taking the bus or riding bikes decided the drive was worth it again, and the new capacity filled with demand nobody had measured because nobody had been able to act on it.
"That's what's going to happen when you create legal technology and introduce it into this field," he said. "All of the people who didn't realize that they had legal issues, who didn't think that going to a lawyer was an option, all that latent demand will come out of the woodwork and create a way bigger economic pie for lawyers to participate in."
It is a clean argument, and it is also a convenient one for a man who needs bar associations not to come after him. He knows that. He said the company has engaged with the profession deliberately, and the business model leans on the referral. In his words, the company does not succeed unless law firms do. Whether that holds at scale is the open question for every company in this category. Almost all the venture money in legal tech, by his account, has gone to software for lawyers inside large firms, which makes the big firms faster and leaves everyone else where they were. He is trying to fund the other side of that, and he spends a lot of investor meetings explaining what the other side is. Consumers and small businesses spend two dollars on legal services for every dollar spent on corporate transactional work, he said. Very few investors have sat across from that customer.
This is the second time he's raised money for a problem the room couldn't see. His first company, Crediverso, launched at TechCrunch Disrupt in 2020 as a financial products marketplace for the U.S. Hispanic community and closed a $3.1 million seed in 2021 from a group including Bessemer Venture Partners, Act One Ventures, Point72 Ventures, and Clocktower. He had gone out looking for half that. A $3.5 million pre-Series A led by Torch Capital and Gaingels in September 2023 paid for the move into legal. My Pocket Lawyer launched that month in English and Spanish, as he told the Los Angeles Business Journal, and the distribution work from Crediverso came with it. You can ask a question in Spanish and get one back in Spanish. You can upload a lease in Korean.
The claims
The team is small. Hernandez, a handful of engineers, a few people on operations and marketing. Everyone is remote, the second fully remote company he's run, and he is candid that this works because the company is still small enough for him to know how each person works. He works early. He'll take a deliverable to 10 at night, hand it to someone who works until 2, and pick it up again at dawn.
What that team has done is harder to pin down. Hernandez said on the podcast that in its first two months of beta, the company helped more people with legal issues than any law firm in the country. A May 2024 press release puts numbers on it, 20,000 users and nearly 100,000 legal inquiries in three months, and describes a set of tools for intake, document analysis, drafting, and knowledge management, arranged like the departments of a law firm, with the company declining to train its own models to keep costs down. A chatbot answering a question about who keeps the dog after a breakup, which is a real example he gave, is not the same unit of work as a firm taking a case. The comparison is doing some stretching. After their own conversation with him, the hosts of the Found podcast said they were still unclear on how the product makes money. When the Business Journal asked in October 2023, it wasn't making any yet. The plan was premium tiers and paid referrals to law firms.
None of that undercuts the number he started with. Whatever My Pocket Lawyer turns out to be, 84 percent of civil legal problems in this country are still being handled by people alone.
Hernandez is careful about the technology in a way that people who build on top of it often are not. His fiancée was reading the Tower of Babel aloud that morning, and he'd been turning it over: a story about people who started building for one reason and kept building for a worse one. He thinks AI is fire. He thinks legal information, medical advice, and financial advice are the categories where you cannot get it wrong, and that the people building there had better include some lawyers. He is one, which is his point.
The last question on the CEO.com Podcast is always the same. Who gave you a chance? He said his investors, for backing problems they had never personally had, and his team. Then his fiancée, a filmmaker who wrote, directed, and produced a film about homelessness on Skid Row called The Tent Mender. She showed it to him on their first date. He went home and watched the whole thing that night, which he described as an act of respect for a field he knew nothing about, and which sounds more like a man who had already decided.

Charlie,<00:00:33.935> thank<00:00:34.159> you<00:00:34.192> so<00:00:34.400> much<00:00:34.576> for<00:00:34.720> coming<00:00:34.977> on<00:00:35.073> the<00:00:35.153> show.
00:00:35.778 --> 00:00:43.119
Uh,<00:00:36.003> I'm<00:00:36.724> so<00:00:36.884> excited<00:00:37.285> to<00:00:37.686> talk<00:00:37.878> about<00:00:38.183> My<00:00:38.407> Pocket<00:00:38.808> Lawyer<00:00:39.144> and<00:00:39.288> your<00:00:39.449> experience<00:00:39.865> and<00:00:39.946> all<00:00:40.026> this<00:00:40.106> stuff,<00:00:40.971> but<00:00:41.068> my<00:00:41.228> first<00:00:41.468> question<00:00:41.773> is,<00:00:41.869> where<00:00:41.981> did<00:00:42.174> you<00:00:42.254> get<00:00:42.414> those<00:00:42.590> glasses?
00:00:43.632 --> 00:00:44.273
Those<00:00:43.776> are<00:00:43.808> incredible.
00:00:45.555 --> 00:00:47.880
Yeah,<00:00:45.796> well,<00:00:45.972> I<00:00:46.020> wouldn't<00:00:46.197> get<00:00:46.293> very<00:00:46.517> far<00:00:46.822> without<00:00:47.158> them,<00:00:47.302> unfortunately.
00:00:47.960 --> 00:01:00.125
I<00:00:48.104> have<00:00:48.344> the<00:00:48.681> prescription<00:00:49.226> of<00:00:49.322> a<00:00:49.386> man<00:00:49.643> twice<00:00:49.963> my<00:00:50.204> age,<00:00:50.524> so<00:00:51.470> I<00:00:51.486> think<00:00:52.127> it's,<00:00:53.265> uh,<00:00:53.794> the<00:00:54.547> novels<00:00:55.092> of<00:00:55.236> innovation<00:00:55.733> over<00:00:55.974> at<00:00:56.054> LensCrafters<00:00:56.855> that<00:00:56.935> have<00:00:57.096> taken<00:00:57.400> this<00:00:57.577> from<00:00:57.721> what<00:00:57.881> should<00:00:58.057> be<00:00:58.202> about<00:00:58.442> 2<00:00:58.602> inches<00:00:58.939> thick<00:00:59.179> to<00:00:59.340> what<00:00:59.580> you're<00:00:59.692> seeing<00:00:59.917> today.
00:01:00.849 --> 00:01:04.434
I<00:01:01.108> have<00:01:01.269> terrible<00:01:01.673> eyes<00:01:01.915> too,<00:01:02.141> obviously,<00:01:02.642> with<00:01:03.110> my<00:01:03.271> glasses,<00:01:03.610> but<00:01:03.853> man,<00:01:04.079> I<00:01:04.159> love<00:01:04.337> 'em.
00:01:04.660 --> 00:01:05.257
I<00:01:04.725> love<00:01:04.886> the<00:01:04.967> frames.
00:01:05.306 --> 00:01:05.564
They're<00:01:05.483> cool.
00:01:05.613 --> 00:01:06.113
I<00:01:05.629> appreciate<00:01:05.936> that.
00:01:06.662 --> 00:01:07.034
Well<00:01:06.840> done.
00:01:07.227 --> 00:01:08.987
Hey,<00:01:07.728> tell<00:01:07.873> us<00:01:07.954> about<00:01:08.196> My<00:01:08.374> Pocket<00:01:08.761> Lawyer.
00:01:10.630 --> 00:01:17.810
Yeah,<00:01:10.823> well,<00:01:10.984> I<00:01:11.065> think,<00:01:11.291> you<00:01:11.953> know,<00:01:12.098> we<00:01:12.179> started<00:01:12.679> by<00:01:13.001> recognizing<00:01:13.647> that<00:01:13.728> there<00:01:13.824> was<00:01:13.970> a<00:01:14.050> big<00:01:14.212> problem<00:01:14.615> in<00:01:14.696> the<00:01:14.776> US,<00:01:15.180> which<00:01:15.406> is<00:01:15.583> people<00:01:15.906> are<00:01:16.003> not<00:01:16.374> getting<00:01:16.632> the<00:01:16.729> legal<00:01:17.019> help<00:01:17.261> that<00:01:17.358> they<00:01:17.519> need.
00:01:18.165 --> 00:01:21.738
This<00:01:18.391> is<00:01:18.423> something<00:01:18.810> that<00:01:18.955> goes<00:01:19.359> all<00:01:19.698> up<00:01:19.859> and<00:01:19.940> down<00:01:20.182> the<00:01:20.247> socioeconomic<00:01:21.090> spectrum,<00:01:21.625> right?
00:01:21.803 --> 00:01:30.497
You<00:01:21.884> can<00:01:22.030> imagine<00:01:22.516> startups<00:01:23.100> like<00:01:23.327> ours,<00:01:24.089> freelancers,<00:01:24.721> small<00:01:25.126> businesses,<00:01:25.920> even<00:01:26.180> big<00:01:26.326> companies<00:01:26.747> who<00:01:26.893> can<00:01:27.136> afford<00:01:27.477> lawyers,<00:01:28.232> Nobody<00:01:28.553> wants<00:01:28.730> to<00:01:28.794> be<00:01:28.891> spending<00:01:29.276> money<00:01:29.517> in<00:01:29.597> those<00:01:29.822> categories,<00:01:30.384> right?
00:01:30.545 --> 00:01:31.461
Those<00:01:30.722> are<00:01:30.786> big<00:01:30.947> cost<00:01:31.204> centers.
00:01:31.509 --> 00:01:35.348
You<00:01:31.589> would<00:01:31.685> much<00:01:31.910> rather<00:01:32.167> put<00:01:32.328> that<00:01:32.569> towards<00:01:32.890> growth,<00:01:33.693> marketing,<00:01:34.320> hiring<00:01:34.657> new<00:01:34.818> employees.
00:01:35.846 --> 00:01:37.564
Yet<00:01:36.183> people<00:01:36.424> face<00:01:36.665> legal<00:01:36.922> issues<00:01:37.211> all<00:01:37.307> the<00:01:37.388> time.
00:01:37.629 --> 00:01:38.930
That's<00:01:37.773> the<00:01:37.805> nature<00:01:38.094> of<00:01:38.191> the<00:01:38.271> world<00:01:38.432> that<00:01:38.512> we<00:01:38.608> live<00:01:38.898> in.
00:01:38.994 --> 00:01:40.970
And<00:01:39.074> so<00:01:39.781> you<00:01:39.861> have<00:01:40.022> to<00:01:40.102> face<00:01:40.279> that<00:01:40.504> reality.
00:01:41.468 --> 00:01:45.869
But<00:01:41.821> it<00:01:41.949> also<00:01:42.142> goes<00:01:42.367> far<00:01:42.592> beyond<00:01:44.134> small<00:01:44.439> businesses<00:01:44.921> and<00:01:45.017> companies<00:01:45.419> like<00:01:45.580> that.
00:01:46.206 --> 00:01:53.258
In<00:01:46.286> the<00:01:46.383> lower<00:01:47.170> portions<00:01:47.507> of<00:01:47.571> the<00:01:47.604> socioeconomic<00:01:48.551> spectrum<00:01:48.969> of<00:01:49.049> our<00:01:49.097> country,<00:01:49.836> people<00:01:50.222> really<00:01:50.479> face<00:01:50.800> huge<00:01:51.186> legal<00:01:51.362> challenges<00:01:51.844> by<00:01:51.940> not<00:01:52.165> being<00:01:52.326> able<00:01:52.471> to<00:01:52.551> afford<00:01:52.952> lawyers.
00:01:53.932 --> 00:01:59.423
In<00:01:54.077> low-income<00:01:54.478> communities,<00:01:55.120> 92%<00:01:56.164> of<00:01:56.260> legal<00:01:56.565> issues<00:01:57.223> go<00:01:57.384> completely<00:01:57.946> unaddressed<00:01:58.427> without<00:01:58.732> the<00:01:58.813> help<00:01:59.005> of<00:01:59.134> a<00:01:59.214> lawyer.
00:01:59.856 --> 00:02:02.858
In<00:01:59.937> certain<00:02:00.386> categories<00:02:00.852> of<00:02:00.916> case<00:02:01.221> law,<00:02:01.783> that<00:02:01.879> number<00:02:02.120> goes<00:02:02.361> even<00:02:02.521> higher.
00:02:03.003 --> 00:02:13.808
Things<00:02:03.244> like<00:02:03.404> landlord-tenant<00:02:04.512> where<00:02:04.673> people<00:02:04.849> are<00:02:04.930> getting<00:02:05.186> evicted,<00:02:05.716> things<00:02:05.925> like<00:02:06.053> family<00:02:06.455> law<00:02:07.081> where<00:02:07.177> people<00:02:07.434> are<00:02:07.659> losing<00:02:07.900> custody<00:02:08.237> of<00:02:08.301> their<00:02:08.445> children,<00:02:09.264> nearly<00:02:09.505> 100%<00:02:10.533> of<00:02:11.175> cases<00:02:11.576> go<00:02:11.753> without<00:02:12.058> the<00:02:12.138> help<00:02:12.395> of<00:02:12.700> professional<00:02:13.117> legal<00:02:13.342> counsel.
00:02:14.225 --> 00:02:15.301
So<00:02:14.321> that's<00:02:14.482> what<00:02:14.578> we<00:02:14.691> were<00:02:14.723> trying<00:02:14.964> to<00:02:15.028> solve.
00:02:15.365 --> 00:02:20.005
We<00:02:15.429> were<00:02:15.526> trying<00:02:15.766> to<00:02:15.863> make<00:02:17.131> legal<00:02:17.372> services<00:02:18.415> accessible<00:02:19.058> to<00:02:19.218> everybody<00:02:19.523> in<00:02:19.619> the<00:02:19.700> country.
00:02:21.225 --> 00:02:24.194
So<00:02:21.931> holy<00:02:22.332> crap,<00:02:23.070> I<00:02:23.295> had<00:02:23.472> no<00:02:23.777> idea.
00:02:24.274 --> 00:02:30.357
92%<00:02:25.799> of<00:02:26.024> all,<00:02:26.666> uh,<00:02:27.324> cases,<00:02:28.832> uh,<00:02:29.169> what<00:02:29.426> did<00:02:29.571> you<00:02:29.651> say<00:02:29.827> that<00:02:30.197> like?
00:02:30.437 --> 00:02:32.508
You<00:02:30.518> should<00:02:30.678> repeat<00:02:30.999> that<00:02:31.111> because<00:02:31.561> that<00:02:31.721> was—<00:02:31.978> that's<00:02:32.219> crazy.
00:02:33.647 --> 00:02:40.436
92%<00:02:34.530> of<00:02:35.333> all<00:02:35.509> civil<00:02:35.910> legal<00:02:36.167> issues<00:02:36.857> in<00:02:36.954> low-income<00:02:37.435> communities<00:02:37.981> go<00:02:38.141> completely<00:02:38.703> unaddressed<00:02:39.281> without<00:02:39.602> the<00:02:39.682> help<00:02:39.923> of<00:02:40.019> a<00:02:40.083> lawyer.
00:02:40.790 --> 00:02:42.716
Across<00:02:41.127> the<00:02:41.207> entire<00:02:41.592> country,<00:02:41.945> it's<00:02:42.090> about<00:02:42.330> 84%.
00:02:42.876 --> 00:02:51.812
So<00:02:44.176> really,<00:02:44.481> I<00:02:44.513> mean,<00:02:44.658> I<00:02:44.722> think<00:02:45.364> a<00:02:45.380> lot<00:02:45.540> of<00:02:45.605> people<00:02:45.845> don't<00:02:46.086> realize<00:02:46.648> it,<00:02:46.808> and<00:02:46.921> that's<00:02:47.161> one<00:02:47.242> of<00:02:47.306> the<00:02:47.370> challenges<00:02:47.868> that<00:02:48.253> we<00:02:48.349> face<00:02:48.686> is<00:02:48.831> that<00:02:49.152> When<00:02:49.232> you<00:02:49.312> think<00:02:49.552> about<00:02:49.729> a<00:02:49.777> legal<00:02:50.033> issue,<00:02:50.338> you<00:02:50.418> think<00:02:50.610> about<00:02:50.834> a<00:02:50.898> criminal<00:02:51.235> legal<00:02:51.459> issue,<00:02:51.716> right?
00:02:51.876 --> 00:02:53.767
That's<00:02:52.677> what<00:02:52.822> gets<00:02:52.982> covered<00:02:53.254> in<00:02:53.319> the<00:02:53.399> news.
00:02:54.024 --> 00:03:02.310
And<00:02:54.344> anybody<00:02:54.697> who's<00:02:54.825> watched<00:02:55.082> Cops<00:02:55.883> will<00:02:56.027> remember<00:02:56.444> the<00:02:57.245> audio<00:02:57.566> clip<00:02:57.790> that<00:02:57.886> says,<00:02:58.127> "If<00:02:58.207> you<00:02:58.351> cannot<00:02:58.623> afford<00:02:58.928> a<00:02:58.992> lawyer,<00:02:59.249> one<00:02:59.393> will<00:02:59.489> be<00:02:59.585> appointed<00:02:59.970> for<00:03:00.210> you."<00:03:00.691> But<00:03:00.851> that's<00:03:01.076> only<00:03:01.252> for<00:03:01.412> criminal<00:03:01.797> legal<00:03:01.989> issues.
00:03:02.438 --> 00:03:08.224
Under<00:03:02.614> the<00:03:02.710> Sixth<00:03:03.079> Amendment<00:03:03.432> in<00:03:03.560> the<00:03:03.640> US,<00:03:03.976> you<00:03:04.073> have<00:03:04.217> a<00:03:04.281> guaranteed<00:03:04.682> right<00:03:04.858> to<00:03:04.938> counsel<00:03:05.403> for<00:03:05.563> a<00:03:05.579> criminal<00:03:05.900> legal<00:03:06.156> issue,<00:03:06.781> but<00:03:06.941> not<00:03:07.166> for<00:03:07.262> a<00:03:07.278> civil<00:03:07.663> legal<00:03:07.887> issue.
00:03:08.528 --> 00:03:23.824
So<00:03:08.688> for<00:03:08.865> things<00:03:09.329> like<00:03:09.971> landlord-tenant<00:03:10.612> law,<00:03:10.868> like<00:03:11.028> I<00:03:11.044> mentioned,<00:03:11.653> maybe<00:03:11.830> your<00:03:11.958> employer<00:03:12.230> stopped<00:03:12.551> paying<00:03:12.695> your<00:03:12.791> salary,<00:03:13.977> all<00:03:14.057> sorts<00:03:14.314> of<00:03:14.394> issues<00:03:14.634> like<00:03:14.795> that<00:03:15.019> that<00:03:15.099> we<00:03:15.147> have<00:03:15.259> to<00:03:15.340> face<00:03:15.660> on<00:03:15.756> a<00:03:15.836> daily<00:03:16.077> basis<00:03:16.558> and<00:03:16.782> as<00:03:17.503> citizens<00:03:18.000> of<00:03:18.064> the<00:03:18.144> country,<00:03:19.107> you're<00:03:19.204> not<00:03:19.429> guaranteed<00:03:19.783> a<00:03:19.848> lawyer,<00:03:20.395> and<00:03:20.878> often<00:03:21.136> people<00:03:21.780> end<00:03:21.876> up<00:03:22.021> going<00:03:22.198> to<00:03:22.343> court<00:03:22.568> themselves<00:03:23.003> and<00:03:23.132> self-representing.
00:03:24.017 --> 00:03:29.672
And<00:03:24.194> especially<00:03:24.903> when<00:03:25.080> the<00:03:25.241> opposing<00:03:25.627> counsel<00:03:26.223> or<00:03:26.352> the<00:03:26.432> opposing<00:03:26.690> party<00:03:26.996> has<00:03:27.173> counsel,<00:03:28.300> you're<00:03:28.445> not<00:03:28.590> going<00:03:28.654> to<00:03:28.703> face<00:03:28.945> a<00:03:29.009> very<00:03:29.187> good<00:03:29.332> outcome.
00:03:30.963 --> 00:03:32.191
So<00:03:31.109> how<00:03:31.286> does<00:03:31.448> it<00:03:31.593> work<00:03:31.836> exactly?
00:03:32.239 --> 00:03:37.326
Like,<00:03:32.643> like,<00:03:32.885> they<00:03:32.998> sign<00:03:33.224> up<00:03:33.370> for<00:03:33.434> My<00:03:34.274> Pocket<00:03:34.662> Lawyer,<00:03:35.243> and<00:03:35.405> then<00:03:36.196> how<00:03:36.309> does,<00:03:36.616> how<00:03:36.713> does<00:03:36.858> it<00:03:36.939> work<00:03:37.149> from<00:03:37.230> there?
00:03:39.015 --> 00:03:51.461
So<00:03:39.111> what<00:03:39.272> we've<00:03:39.433> done,<00:03:39.980> uh,<00:03:40.382> I'm<00:03:40.720> very<00:03:40.961> lucky<00:03:41.283> to<00:03:41.427> work<00:03:41.604> with<00:03:41.749> a<00:03:41.846> really<00:03:42.071> talented<00:03:42.553> team<00:03:43.116> of<00:03:43.438> AI<00:03:43.776> and<00:03:43.856> machine<00:03:44.178> learning<00:03:44.435> engineers<00:03:45.402> And<00:03:45.482> we've<00:03:45.706> built<00:03:45.882> this<00:03:46.043> software<00:03:46.764> where<00:03:47.005> if<00:03:47.165> you<00:03:47.309> have<00:03:47.469> a<00:03:47.485> legal<00:03:47.726> question,<00:03:48.207> you<00:03:48.351> come<00:03:48.527> to<00:03:48.672> us,<00:03:49.313> mypocketlawyer.ai,<00:03:50.996> and<00:03:51.076> you<00:03:51.172> ask<00:03:51.413> it.
00:03:51.557 --> 00:03:53.625
And<00:03:51.637> this<00:03:51.733> could<00:03:51.894> be<00:03:52.198> any<00:03:52.375> legal<00:03:52.679> question<00:03:53.000> you<00:03:53.096> can<00:03:53.192> imagine.
00:03:54.122 --> 00:04:02.794
We<00:03:54.282> had<00:03:54.443> somebody<00:03:54.699> come<00:03:54.923> to<00:03:55.020> us<00:03:55.244> last<00:03:55.501> week<00:03:55.805> who,<00:03:56.366> she<00:03:56.623> broke<00:03:56.863> up<00:03:56.943> with<00:03:57.039> her<00:03:57.168> boyfriend<00:03:57.889> and<00:03:58.691> they<00:03:59.171> had<00:03:59.284> adopted<00:03:59.732> a<00:03:59.749> dog<00:04:00.005> together<00:04:00.454> and<00:04:00.550> they<00:04:00.774> were<00:04:00.935> arguing<00:04:01.207> over<00:04:01.416> who<00:04:01.496> was<00:04:01.576> going<00:04:01.672> to<00:04:01.736> get<00:04:01.832> custody<00:04:02.169> of<00:04:02.233> the<00:04:02.313> dog,<00:04:02.618> right?
00:04:02.874 --> 00:04:03.772
Simple<00:04:03.179> questions<00:04:03.500> like<00:04:03.660> that.

And<00:04:32.434> where<00:04:32.610> we<00:04:32.755> can't<00:04:33.011> answer<00:04:33.235> the<00:04:33.332> question,<00:04:33.556> we'll<00:04:33.716> connect<00:04:33.957> you<00:04:33.989> to<00:04:34.133> a<00:04:34.149> lawyer.
00:04:34.598 --> 00:04:45.213
But<00:04:34.758> when<00:04:34.855> we<00:04:34.935> do<00:04:35.079> so,<00:04:35.335> we're<00:04:35.416> going<00:04:35.528> to<00:04:35.720> arm<00:04:35.880> you<00:04:35.961> with<00:04:36.121> all<00:04:36.361> the<00:04:36.458> information<00:04:37.003> you<00:04:37.163> need<00:04:37.403> and<00:04:37.499> all<00:04:37.580> the<00:04:37.660> information<00:04:38.221> they<00:04:38.461> need<00:04:39.022> so<00:04:39.167> that<00:04:39.327> it<00:04:39.407> is<00:04:39.503> more<00:04:39.680> efficient<00:04:40.064> for<00:04:40.209> both<00:04:40.401> of<00:04:40.545> you<00:04:40.706> and<00:04:40.786> you<00:04:40.818> don't<00:04:40.994> have<00:04:41.090> to<00:04:41.170> spend<00:04:41.443> the<00:04:41.571> first<00:04:41.812> 2<00:04:41.972> hours<00:04:42.293> of<00:04:42.373> time<00:04:42.629> that<00:04:42.709> you<00:04:42.773> are<00:04:42.950> paying<00:04:43.206> for<00:04:43.880> just<00:04:44.072> trying<00:04:44.297> to<00:04:44.329> get<00:04:44.538> through<00:04:44.635> the<00:04:44.715> basics.
00:04:46.080 --> 00:04:50.996
How<00:04:46.177> do<00:04:46.305> you<00:04:46.337> make<00:04:46.578> it<00:04:46.643> accessible<00:04:47.189> for<00:04:47.510> all<00:04:48.008> low<00:04:48.249> income,<00:04:49.277> everybody<00:04:49.614> in<00:04:49.695> that<00:04:49.855> low<00:04:50.016> income<00:04:50.321> bracket?
00:04:51.060 --> 00:04:52.120
How<00:04:51.156> do<00:04:51.205> you<00:04:51.301> make<00:04:51.542> it<00:04:51.606> accessible?
00:04:52.201 --> 00:04:57.164
How<00:04:52.329> do<00:04:52.393> you,<00:04:52.570> like,<00:04:53.132> I<00:04:53.213> imagine<00:04:53.502> you<00:04:53.534> have<00:04:53.646> to<00:04:53.775> do<00:04:53.871> different<00:04:54.112> languages,<00:04:54.578> for<00:04:54.739> example,<00:04:55.622> and<00:04:55.799> that<00:04:56.666> type<00:04:56.843> of<00:04:56.875> stuff.
00:04:58.514 --> 00:04:58.980
Absolutely.
00:04:59.028 --> 00:05:03.943
So<00:04:59.719> what's<00:04:59.895> been<00:05:00.056> really<00:05:00.618> helpful<00:05:01.100> here<00:05:01.421> is<00:05:01.502> that<00:05:01.646> this<00:05:01.887> actually<00:05:02.225> isn't<00:05:02.626> the<00:05:02.706> first<00:05:03.172> company<00:05:03.445> that<00:05:03.574> I<00:05:03.590> founded.
00:05:03.992 --> 00:05:11.092
I<00:05:04.008> founded<00:05:04.297> a<00:05:04.377> company<00:05:04.698> called<00:05:04.795> Crediverso<00:05:05.453> about<00:05:06.160> 4<00:05:06.385> years<00:05:06.642> ago<00:05:06.787> or<00:05:06.883> so,<00:05:07.140> and<00:05:07.269> that's<00:05:07.445> a<00:05:07.510> financial<00:05:07.927> technology<00:05:08.489> platform<00:05:09.518> built<00:05:09.759> for<00:05:09.999> recent<00:05:10.240> immigrants<00:05:10.514> to<00:05:10.722> the<00:05:10.803> US.
00:05:11.510 --> 00:05:23.580
We<00:05:11.686> were<00:05:12.167> trying<00:05:12.567> to<00:05:12.984> connect<00:05:13.449> people<00:05:13.850> who<00:05:13.898> didn't<00:05:14.187> have<00:05:14.411> access<00:05:14.732> to<00:05:14.892> financial<00:05:15.293> products<00:05:15.629> and<00:05:15.693> resources<00:05:16.174> the<00:05:16.254> same<00:05:16.511> way<00:05:16.751> that<00:05:17.296> other<00:05:17.393> members<00:05:17.633> of<00:05:17.697> our<00:05:17.793> community<00:05:18.194> take<00:05:18.354> for<00:05:18.499> granted,<00:05:19.380> uh,<00:05:19.476> to<00:05:19.637> things<00:05:19.813> like<00:05:20.022> bank<00:05:20.198> accounts<00:05:20.759> and<00:05:20.839> loans<00:05:21.320> and<00:05:21.400> credit<00:05:21.641> scores,<00:05:22.346> ways<00:05:22.522> to<00:05:22.602> send<00:05:22.763> money<00:05:22.987> internationally.
00:05:24.269 --> 00:05:35.058
And<00:05:24.831> that's<00:05:25.023> a<00:05:25.167> really<00:05:25.552> challenging<00:05:26.145> set<00:05:26.834> of<00:05:27.155> issues<00:05:27.411> to<00:05:27.508> tackle<00:05:27.892> because,<00:05:28.149> as<00:05:28.277> you<00:05:28.373> said,<00:05:28.950> a<00:05:29.079> lot<00:05:29.239> of<00:05:29.271> these<00:05:29.399> people<00:05:29.640> don't<00:05:29.800> speak<00:05:29.976> the<00:05:30.072> language,<00:05:30.698> they<00:05:30.794> don't<00:05:31.018> watch<00:05:31.259> traditional<00:05:31.804> news<00:05:32.044> media,<00:05:32.301> they're<00:05:32.717> not<00:05:33.327> as<00:05:33.439> easily<00:05:33.663> accessible<00:05:34.128> as<00:05:34.224> a<00:05:34.304> typical<00:05:34.625> consumer.
00:05:35.106 --> 00:05:46.662
And<00:05:35.250> so<00:05:35.988> we've<00:05:36.212> taken<00:05:36.613> all<00:05:36.725> of<00:05:36.869> the<00:05:36.949> learnings<00:05:37.286> that<00:05:37.414> we<00:05:37.510> generated<00:05:38.071> from<00:05:38.697> what<00:05:38.793> we<00:05:38.953> did<00:05:39.178> with<00:05:39.274> our<00:05:39.498> work<00:05:39.979> in<00:05:40.155> the<00:05:40.957> financial<00:05:41.758> product<00:05:42.095> space,<00:05:42.720> uh,<00:05:42.864> at<00:05:43.201> Credit<00:05:43.410> verso<00:05:44.547> and<00:05:44.884> translated<00:05:45.589> that<00:05:45.845> to<00:05:45.941> what<00:05:46.086> we're<00:05:46.230> doing<00:05:46.486> here.
00:05:46.983 --> 00:05:48.425
Now<00:05:47.095> it's<00:05:47.335> a<00:05:47.368> much<00:05:47.608> broader<00:05:47.944> market,<00:05:48.329> right?
00:05:48.489 --> 00:05:55.300
This<00:05:48.649> isn't<00:05:48.874> just<00:05:49.050> recent<00:05:49.290> immigrants<00:05:49.675> who<00:05:49.771> are<00:05:49.851> having<00:05:50.156> challenges<00:05:50.540> with<00:05:50.637> legal<00:05:50.893> issues,<00:05:51.213> although<00:05:51.454> that's<00:05:52.159> absolutely<00:05:52.880> one<00:05:52.992> of<00:05:53.056> the<00:05:53.216> areas<00:05:53.681> that,<00:05:54.322> uh,<00:05:54.418> really<00:05:54.595> needs<00:05:54.835> our<00:05:54.963> help.
00:05:55.684 --> 00:05:58.601
It's<00:05:56.085> anybody<00:05:56.742> up<00:05:56.902> and<00:05:56.966> down<00:05:57.142> the<00:05:57.207> socioeconomic<00:05:57.880> spectrum,<00:05:58.264> right?
00:05:58.985 --> 00:06:01.181
Um,<00:05:59.322> so<00:05:59.626> the<00:05:59.706> platform<00:06:00.123> is<00:06:00.251> available<00:06:00.652> in<00:06:00.732> any<00:06:00.892> language.
00:06:01.453 --> 00:06:03.889
You<00:06:01.549> can<00:06:01.934> ask<00:06:02.126> a<00:06:02.190> question<00:06:02.607> in<00:06:02.671> Spanish,<00:06:03.071> get<00:06:03.136> an<00:06:03.232> answer<00:06:03.488> in<00:06:03.552> Spanish.
00:06:03.937 --> 00:06:09.417
You<00:06:04.033> can<00:06:04.193> upload<00:06:04.450> a<00:06:04.498> document<00:06:05.395> in<00:06:05.539> Korean,<00:06:05.940> get<00:06:06.036> an<00:06:06.196> answer<00:06:06.421> in<00:06:06.501> Korean,<00:06:07.382> and,<00:06:07.943> uh,<00:06:08.183> we<00:06:08.263> can<00:06:08.359> help<00:06:08.504> you<00:06:08.584> navigate<00:06:08.920> it<00:06:09.000> that<00:06:09.225> way.
00:06:09.866 --> 00:06:20.204
But<00:06:10.218> it's<00:06:10.427> also,<00:06:11.709> I<00:06:11.805> think,<00:06:13.392> a<00:06:13.664> very<00:06:13.889> much<00:06:14.129> a<00:06:14.193> factor<00:06:14.754> of<00:06:14.851> trying<00:06:15.235> to<00:06:16.357> make<00:06:17.159> legal<00:06:17.880> language<00:06:18.377> accessible<00:06:19.162> for<00:06:19.499> the<00:06:19.643> layperson.
00:06:20.284 --> 00:06:23.874
So<00:06:20.460> one<00:06:20.685> thing<00:06:20.941> that<00:06:21.166> lawyers<00:06:21.486> love<00:06:21.646> to<00:06:21.743> do<00:06:21.887> is<00:06:22.784> to<00:06:22.865> overcomplicate<00:06:23.650> things.
00:06:24.451 --> 00:06:26.535
I,<00:06:24.788> as<00:06:24.932> a<00:06:24.964> lawyer,<00:06:25.429> am<00:06:25.525> victim<00:06:25.830> of<00:06:25.894> doing<00:06:26.022> that<00:06:26.166> myself.
00:06:26.615 --> 00:06:33.395
My<00:06:26.711> fiancée<00:06:27.112> will<00:06:27.256> tell<00:06:27.497> you<00:06:27.657> that<00:06:27.897> I<00:06:28.539> cannot<00:06:28.891> give<00:06:29.035> a<00:06:29.100> simple<00:06:29.420> answer,<00:06:29.741> cannot<00:06:29.997> give<00:06:30.157> a<00:06:30.221> one-sentence<00:06:30.718> answer,<00:06:31.039> and<00:06:31.087> I'm<00:06:31.199> probably<00:06:31.600> doing<00:06:31.824> that<00:06:31.985> same<00:06:32.225> thing<00:06:32.385> right<00:06:32.546> now<00:06:32.722> in<00:06:32.802> this<00:06:33.026> answer.
00:06:33.844 --> 00:06:43.894
But<00:06:34.565> what<00:06:34.709> we<00:06:34.741> try<00:06:34.966> to<00:06:35.030> do<00:06:35.110> with<00:06:35.206> My<00:06:35.367> Pocket<00:06:35.687> Lawyer<00:06:36.104> is<00:06:36.232> take<00:06:36.472> really<00:06:36.649> complicated<00:06:37.210> terminology,<00:06:38.252> legal<00:06:38.556> language,<00:06:38.893> legalese,<00:06:39.919> and<00:06:40.239> make<00:06:40.416> it<00:06:40.480> simple<00:06:40.800> and<00:06:40.881> accessible<00:06:41.361> for<00:06:41.458> the<00:06:41.538> layperson<00:06:42.083> so<00:06:42.243> that<00:06:42.339> they<00:06:42.500> can<00:06:42.660> understand<00:06:43.045> what<00:06:43.141> their<00:06:43.285> rights<00:06:43.542> truly<00:06:43.846> are.
00:06:45.048 --> 00:06:48.751
As<00:06:45.145> CEO,<00:06:45.625> how<00:06:45.786> do<00:06:45.850> you<00:06:46.010> decide<00:06:46.331> where<00:06:46.427> to<00:06:46.507> spend<00:06:46.748> your<00:06:46.892> time<00:06:47.148> each<00:06:47.309> day<00:06:47.373> as<00:06:47.565> you're<00:06:47.693> building<00:06:48.030> out<00:06:48.190> the<00:06:48.270> product?
00:06:48.976 --> 00:06:52.791
And<00:06:49.376> I<00:06:49.553> assume<00:06:49.889> you're<00:06:50.018> getting<00:06:50.194> customer<00:06:50.595> feedback,<00:06:51.717> feedback<00:06:52.102> from<00:06:52.262> your<00:06:52.358> engineers.
00:06:52.839 --> 00:06:58.530
Like,<00:06:52.999> as<00:06:53.079> CEO,<00:06:53.480> where<00:06:53.641> do<00:06:53.689> you—<00:06:53.801> how<00:06:53.897> do<00:06:53.961> you<00:06:54.105> decide<00:06:54.442> what<00:06:54.586> to<00:06:54.682> prioritize,<00:06:55.324> particularly<00:06:55.885> even<00:06:56.109> in<00:06:56.269> like<00:06:56.911> the<00:06:57.007> product<00:06:57.392> itself<00:06:58.129> and<00:06:58.209> the<00:06:58.369> app?
00:06:59.475 --> 00:07:00.566
That's<00:07:00.053> a<00:07:00.069> great<00:07:00.229> question.
00:07:00.614 --> 00:07:02.313
It's<00:07:00.758> one<00:07:00.870> of<00:07:00.934> the<00:07:01.319> hardest<00:07:01.511> parts<00:07:01.752> about<00:07:01.976> the<00:07:02.056> job.
00:07:02.377 --> 00:07:09.446
There<00:07:02.617> is<00:07:03.515> seemingly<00:07:04.124> a<00:07:04.220> never-ending<00:07:05.022> series<00:07:05.423> of<00:07:05.583> fires<00:07:05.920> that<00:07:06.048> need<00:07:06.224> putting<00:07:06.529> out,<00:07:07.090> and<00:07:07.571> it's<00:07:07.747> somewhat<00:07:08.468> a<00:07:08.629> measure<00:07:09.013> of<00:07:09.094> triage.
00:07:09.510 --> 00:07:10.760
We're<00:07:09.639> a<00:07:09.655> very<00:07:09.767> small<00:07:10.120> a<00:07:10.420> team.
00:07:10.760 --> 00:07:15.810
It's<00:07:11.060> me<00:07:11.440> and<00:07:11.580> a<00:07:11.760> handful<00:07:11.860> of<00:07:12.100> engineers<00:07:12.400> and<00:07:12.640> a<00:07:12.740> couple<00:07:12.860> of<00:07:13.040> folks<00:07:13.160> who<00:07:13.340> help<00:07:13.460> out<00:07:13.640> with<00:07:13.800> operations<00:07:14.340> and<00:07:14.640> business<00:07:14.820> development<00:07:15.200> and<00:07:15.360> marketing.
00:07:16.080 --> 00:07:19.100
But<00:07:16.560> we<00:07:17.060> are<00:07:17.280> not<00:07:17.520> a<00:07:18.239> major<00:07:18.460> corporation.
00:07:19.100 --> 00:07:20.280
We're<00:07:19.120> not<00:07:19.240> a<00:07:19.380> major<00:07:19.540> law<00:07:19.880> firm.
00:07:20.360 --> 00:07:26.780
Yet<00:07:20.720> somehow<00:07:21.000> in<00:07:21.220> the<00:07:21.340> past<00:07:21.560> 2<00:07:21.780> months<00:07:21.920> that<00:07:22.140> we've<00:07:22.440> been<00:07:22.600> live<00:07:22.780> with<00:07:22.960> our<00:07:23.080> beta,<00:07:23.320> we've<00:07:23.500> been<00:07:23.640> able<00:07:23.760> to<00:07:23.860> help<00:07:24.000> more<00:07:24.220> people<00:07:24.440> with<00:07:24.640> their<00:07:24.820> legal<00:07:25.020> issues<00:07:25.340> than<00:07:25.520> any<00:07:25.740> law<00:07:25.960> firm<00:07:26.100> in<00:07:26.199> the<00:07:26.280> country.
00:07:27.980 --> 00:07:31.000
So<00:07:28.100> I'll<00:07:28.280> pause<00:07:28.360> there<00:07:28.540> because<00:07:28.700> that's,<00:07:29.180> I<00:07:29.200> think,<00:07:29.220> a<00:07:29.300> really<00:07:29.500> important<00:07:30.280> piece<00:07:30.580> of<00:07:30.740> how<00:07:30.840> scalable<00:07:31.000> this<00:07:31.000> is.
00:07:31.000 --> 00:07:31.480
Oh<00:07:31.060> my<00:07:31.180> word.
00:07:31.900 --> 00:07:32.470
That<00:07:31.980> is<00:07:32.120> incredible.
00:07:33.760 --> 00:07:34.200
Yeah.
00:07:34.200 --> 00:07:39.040
And<00:07:34.460> so,<00:07:34.880> you<00:07:34.960> know,<00:07:35.180> to,<00:07:35.680> to<00:07:35.681> answer<00:07:35.860> your<00:07:36.060> question,<00:07:36.580> it<00:07:36.940> means<00:07:37.180> there's<00:07:37.440> something<00:07:37.680> new<00:07:37.900> to<00:07:38.020> deal<00:07:38.180> with<00:07:38.400> every<00:07:38.580> single<00:07:38.780> day.
00:07:40.618 --> 00:07:48.024
It<00:07:40.714> can<00:07:40.875> range<00:07:41.195> from<00:07:41.821> dealing<00:07:42.141> with<00:07:42.301> marketing<00:07:42.718> issues,<00:07:43.199> building<00:07:43.584> out<00:07:43.680> different,<00:07:43.920> different<00:07:44.193> distribution<00:07:44.706> channels<00:07:45.043> to<00:07:45.139> make<00:07:45.283> sure<00:07:45.604> that<00:07:46.004> people<00:07:46.261> are<00:07:46.405> aware<00:07:46.710> this<00:07:46.886> even<00:07:47.062> exists<00:07:47.367> as<00:07:47.447> an<00:07:47.591> option,<00:07:47.912> right?
00:07:48.072 --> 00:07:57.482
Because<00:07:48.345> there's<00:07:48.553> a<00:07:48.633> big<00:07:49.210> communication<00:07:49.836> and<00:07:49.916> education<00:07:50.397> process<00:07:50.813> to<00:07:50.910> let<00:07:51.054> people<00:07:51.294> know<00:07:51.455> that,<00:07:51.599> hey,<00:07:51.871> if<00:07:52.240> you<00:07:52.320> have<00:07:52.416> a<00:07:52.497> legal<00:07:52.737> issue,<00:07:53.458> you<00:07:53.603> no<00:07:53.779> longer<00:07:54.116> need<00:07:54.324> to<00:07:54.500> either<00:07:54.725> just<00:07:54.981> Google<00:07:55.302> it<00:07:55.622> or<00:07:55.847> pay<00:07:55.943> $500<00:07:56.664> an<00:07:56.809> hour<00:07:56.905> for<00:07:57.065> a<00:07:57.145> lawyer.
00:07:57.626 --> 00:08:00.720
There's<00:07:57.915> something<00:07:58.107> in<00:07:58.171> the<00:07:58.203> middle<00:07:58.428> that<00:07:58.524> can<00:07:58.652> help<00:07:58.828> you<00:07:58.973> for<00:07:59.133> all<00:07:59.454> of<00:07:59.534> those<00:07:59.710> other<00:07:59.935> challenges<00:08:00.271> that<00:08:00.415> you<00:08:00.496> have.
00:08:01.297 --> 00:08:08.062
It's<00:08:01.778> a<00:08:03.141> measure<00:08:03.381> of<00:08:03.461> spending<00:08:03.702> time<00:08:03.878> around<00:08:04.054> financing,<00:08:04.535> making<00:08:04.824> sure<00:08:05.000> that<00:08:05.144> we're<00:08:05.465> doing<00:08:05.705> fundraising<00:08:06.138> appropriately<00:08:06.763> and<00:08:06.908> working<00:08:07.068> with<00:08:07.148> the<00:08:07.244> right<00:08:07.421> investors.
00:08:08.447 --> 00:08:12.823
It's<00:08:08.607> a<00:08:08.671> measure<00:08:09.232> of<00:08:10.274> regulatory<00:08:12.134> consideration.
00:08:12.919 --> 00:08:23.323
So<00:08:13.320> we're<00:08:13.977> dealing<00:08:14.298> in<00:08:14.442> the<00:08:14.538> space<00:08:15.099> of<00:08:15.243> legal<00:08:15.436> information<00:08:16.366> and<00:08:16.622> making<00:08:16.863> sure<00:08:17.167> that<00:08:17.343> we<00:08:17.568> are<00:08:18.930> advocating<00:08:19.363> for<00:08:19.508> people<00:08:19.748> the<00:08:19.892> right<00:08:20.069> way<00:08:20.373> and<00:08:20.469> communicating<00:08:21.014> reliable<00:08:21.591> and<00:08:21.672> comprehensive<00:08:22.233> and<00:08:22.377> accurate<00:08:22.698> information.
00:08:23.659 --> 00:08:33.149
So<00:08:23.756> there<00:08:23.836> are<00:08:23.900> many<00:08:24.076> things<00:08:24.381> to<00:08:24.958> take<00:08:25.182> into<00:08:25.343> consideration<00:08:26.064> at<00:08:26.176> any<00:08:26.320> given<00:08:26.561> point,<00:08:27.747> and<00:08:28.789> it<00:08:29.030> has<00:08:29.831> not<00:08:30.232> been<00:08:30.472> great<00:08:30.745> for<00:08:31.530> the<00:08:31.610> number<00:08:31.851> of<00:08:31.931> gray<00:08:32.172> hairs<00:08:32.476> I<00:08:32.556> have<00:08:32.717> on<00:08:32.813> my<00:08:32.957> head.
00:08:33.294 --> 00:08:37.237
But<00:08:33.759> I<00:08:33.855> think<00:08:34.079> we're<00:08:34.191> doing<00:08:34.480> a<00:08:34.496> really<00:08:34.801> important<00:08:35.121> job<00:08:35.313> to<00:08:35.362> help<00:08:35.474> a<00:08:35.538> lot<00:08:35.602> of<00:08:35.698> people<00:08:35.939> with<00:08:36.019> something<00:08:36.323> that's<00:08:36.500> a<00:08:36.724> big<00:08:36.884> area<00:08:37.045> of<00:08:37.141> need.
00:08:37.896 --> 00:08:40.440
So<00:08:38.776> what<00:08:38.858> does<00:08:38.972> a<00:08:39.103> typical<00:08:39.445> day<00:08:39.673> look<00:08:39.869> like<00:08:40.097> for<00:08:40.326> you?
00:08:40.587 --> 00:08:46.440
Tell<00:08:40.815> us,<00:08:40.913> like,<00:08:41.092> how—<00:08:41.402> because<00:08:41.793> we<00:08:41.875> talk<00:08:42.071> a<00:08:42.119> lot<00:08:42.217> about<00:08:42.478> self-leadership,<00:08:43.841> um,<00:08:44.147> here<00:08:44.309> at<00:08:44.406> CEO.com,<00:08:45.294> and<00:08:45.439> what<00:08:45.536> it<00:08:45.616> means<00:08:45.859> to<00:08:46.004> lead.
00:08:46.666 --> 00:08:50.879
Like,<00:08:46.827> if<00:08:46.892> you<00:08:46.972> can't<00:08:47.150> lead<00:08:47.376> yourself,<00:08:47.780> you<00:08:47.860> can't<00:08:48.038> lead<00:08:48.199> others,<00:08:49.313> um,<00:08:49.491> that,<00:08:49.733> that<00:08:49.894> type<00:08:50.072> of<00:08:50.217> a<00:08:50.298> concept.
00:08:50.944 --> 00:08:52.429
What<00:08:51.024> does<00:08:51.170> a<00:08:51.250> typical<00:08:51.654> day<00:08:51.815> look<00:08:52.009> like<00:08:52.235> for<00:08:52.380> you?
00:08:54.065 --> 00:08:58.951
I<00:08:54.162> keep<00:08:54.499> a<00:08:54.724> pretty<00:08:55.287> regimented<00:08:55.930> structure,<00:08:57.038> um,<00:08:57.601> maybe<00:08:57.858> too<00:08:58.019> regimented<00:08:58.485> sometimes.
00:08:59.208 --> 00:09:04.460
I<00:08:59.465> wake<00:08:59.771> up<00:08:59.947> pretty<00:09:00.124> much<00:09:00.285> at<00:09:00.349> the<00:09:00.494> same<00:09:00.671> exact<00:09:00.928> time<00:09:01.169> every<00:09:01.313> day,<00:09:01.619> eat<00:09:01.699> the<00:09:01.731> same<00:09:01.956> thing<00:09:02.101> for<00:09:02.197> breakfast,<00:09:02.599> do<00:09:02.744> the<00:09:02.889> same<00:09:03.674> time<00:09:03.903> workout.
00:09:04.624 --> 00:09:13.787
And,<00:09:05.360> um,<00:09:06.097> what<00:09:06.195> I<00:09:06.277> found<00:09:06.916> is<00:09:07.096> that<00:09:08.886> Everybody<00:09:09.352> has<00:09:09.674> a<00:09:09.786> different<00:09:11.843> model<00:09:12.180> for<00:09:12.357> their<00:09:12.501> day<00:09:12.662> that<00:09:12.807> makes<00:09:13.048> them<00:09:13.160> successful.
00:09:14.172 --> 00:09:17.177
And<00:09:14.574> for<00:09:14.638> most<00:09:14.831> people,<00:09:15.217> that<00:09:15.377> model<00:09:15.634> is<00:09:15.779> not<00:09:16.052> 9<00:09:16.213> to<00:09:16.341> 5,<00:09:17.064> right?
00:09:17.241 --> 00:09:22.447
You<00:09:17.321> put<00:09:17.562> me<00:09:17.643> in<00:09:17.723> an<00:09:17.803> office<00:09:18.125> from<00:09:18.269> 9<00:09:18.446> to<00:09:18.510> 5<00:09:19.073> and<00:09:19.796> I<00:09:19.876> get<00:09:19.972> a<00:09:19.989> 45-minute<00:09:20.519> lunch<00:09:20.760> break,<00:09:21.017> I'm<00:09:21.145> going<00:09:21.322> to<00:09:21.354> be<00:09:21.483> extremely<00:09:21.900> unproductive.
00:09:22.945 --> 00:09:36.552
But<00:09:23.732> you<00:09:24.375> let<00:09:24.487> me<00:09:24.568> set<00:09:24.793> my<00:09:24.953> own<00:09:25.114> hours,<00:09:25.499> you<00:09:25.580> let<00:09:25.676> me<00:09:25.821> work<00:09:25.998> when<00:09:26.945> I<00:09:27.026> have<00:09:27.299> the<00:09:27.444> motivation<00:09:27.877> to<00:09:27.990> work<00:09:28.263> and<00:09:28.424> the<00:09:29.934> energy<00:09:30.255> to<00:09:30.336> be<00:09:30.480> creative,<00:09:30.978> to<00:09:31.219> problem<00:09:31.605> solve<00:09:31.862> things<00:09:32.023> that<00:09:32.103> need<00:09:32.264> creativity<00:09:33.228> and<00:09:33.613> the<00:09:34.192> willingness<00:09:34.673> to<00:09:34.834> chase<00:09:35.091> down<00:09:35.315> the<00:09:35.396> things<00:09:35.701> that<00:09:35.797> just<00:09:36.022> need<00:09:36.182> attention.
00:09:37.146 --> 00:09:46.104
And<00:09:37.579> I'll<00:09:38.045> manage<00:09:38.350> that<00:09:38.992> in<00:09:39.152> a<00:09:39.795> way<00:09:40.052> that<00:09:40.629> fits<00:09:41.898> my<00:09:42.363> productivity<00:09:43.648> maximization<00:09:44.547> process,<00:09:45.093> I<00:09:45.125> suppose<00:09:45.446> you<00:09:45.510> could<00:09:45.655> call<00:09:45.831> it<00:09:45.976> that.
00:09:46.859 --> 00:09:47.758
It's<00:09:47.035> different<00:09:47.276> for<00:09:47.372> everybody.
00:09:47.999 --> 00:09:48.833
I<00:09:48.079> know<00:09:48.175> what<00:09:48.304> it<00:09:48.384> is<00:09:48.480> for<00:09:48.625> me.
00:09:48.946 --> 00:09:58.017
I<00:09:48.978> know<00:09:49.122> the<00:09:49.267> hours<00:09:49.443> of<00:09:49.508> the<00:09:49.588> day<00:09:49.684> that<00:09:49.829> I<00:09:49.845> need<00:09:49.893> to<00:09:50.005> be<00:09:50.150> working,<00:09:50.407> the<00:09:50.471> hours<00:09:50.664> of<00:09:50.728> the<00:09:50.760> day<00:09:50.888> that<00:09:51.033> I<00:09:51.065> need<00:09:51.209> to<00:09:51.290> be<00:09:52.012> out<00:09:52.253> getting<00:09:52.430> away<00:09:52.638> from<00:09:53.200> the<00:09:53.939> things<00:09:54.115> that<00:09:54.244> are<00:09:54.340> on<00:09:54.436> my<00:09:54.517> mind<00:09:54.998> and<00:09:55.143> trying<00:09:55.384> to<00:09:55.624> give<00:09:55.769> myself<00:09:56.106> an<00:09:56.170> opportunity<00:09:56.652> to<00:09:56.748> think<00:09:56.909> more<00:09:57.053> creatively<00:09:57.471> about<00:09:57.792> them.
00:09:58.418 --> 00:10:06.667
But<00:09:58.819> it,<00:09:59.783> it<00:09:59.879> starts<00:10:00.280> with<00:10:00.827> keeping<00:10:01.166> a<00:10:01.472> very<00:10:01.730> well-structured<00:10:02.601> routine<00:10:03.569> and<00:10:03.731> getting<00:10:03.973> lots<00:10:04.086> of<00:10:04.150> sleep,<00:10:04.618> eating<00:10:04.779> well,<00:10:05.182> spending<00:10:05.441> lots<00:10:05.586> of<00:10:05.683> time<00:10:05.828> with<00:10:05.892> the<00:10:05.925> people<00:10:06.150> I<00:10:06.247> care<00:10:06.408> about.
00:10:07.833 --> 00:10:10.588
And<00:10:08.155> that<00:10:08.381> puts<00:10:08.558> me<00:10:08.622> in<00:10:08.655> a<00:10:08.719> good<00:10:08.864> position<00:10:09.283> to<00:10:09.525> solve<00:10:09.750> the<00:10:09.847> problems<00:10:10.105> that<00:10:10.153> need<00:10:10.266> solving.
00:10:11.136 --> 00:10:11.796
What<00:10:11.249> do<00:10:11.313> you<00:10:11.523> read?
00:10:12.248 --> 00:10:14.149
What<00:10:12.425> reading<00:10:12.747> recommendations<00:10:13.472> would<00:10:13.617> you<00:10:13.698> have<00:10:13.875> for<00:10:14.036> us?
00:10:15.890 --> 00:10:19.384
Yeah,<00:10:18.498> I<00:10:18.578> read<00:10:18.756> a<00:10:18.804> lot<00:10:18.965> of<00:10:19.045> fiction.
00:10:19.770 --> 00:10:20.881
I<00:10:19.851> read<00:10:19.899> a<00:10:19.947> lot<00:10:20.108> of<00:10:20.173> classic<00:10:20.495> novels.
00:10:21.557 --> 00:10:23.602
Just<00:10:21.783> finished<00:10:21.960> reading<00:10:22.121> Moby<00:10:22.362> Dick<00:10:22.990> and<00:10:23.393> I<00:10:23.490> think—.
00:10:23.602 --> 00:10:23.956
Oh,<00:10:23.634> great.
00:10:24.295 --> 00:10:32.887
It's,<00:10:24.536> you<00:10:24.617> know,<00:10:24.939> a<00:10:25.084> lot<00:10:25.245> of<00:10:25.277> these<00:10:25.422> books,<00:10:25.668> it's<00:10:25.815> funny,<00:10:26.405> the<00:10:26.487> first<00:10:26.798> go<00:10:26.929> around<00:10:27.240> I<00:10:27.305> saw<00:10:27.469> them<00:10:27.649> in<00:10:27.715> my<00:10:27.813> life,<00:10:28.190> I,<00:10:28.795> it<00:10:28.861> was<00:10:29.090> in<00:10:29.123> middle<00:10:29.303> school<00:10:29.500> and<00:10:29.565> high<00:10:29.614> school<00:10:29.827> when<00:10:29.942> they<00:10:29.991> were<00:10:30.040> thrust<00:10:30.138> at<00:10:30.253> you<00:10:30.286> by<00:10:30.400> an<00:10:30.433> English<00:10:32.550> teacher.
00:10:33.127 --> 00:10:39.243
And<00:10:34.026> like<00:10:34.652> many<00:10:35.246> students,<00:10:35.856> I<00:10:35.953> probably<00:10:36.771> skimmed<00:10:37.221> them<00:10:37.542> and/or<00:10:37.751> didn't<00:10:38.120> read<00:10:38.296> them<00:10:38.441> when<00:10:38.585> I<00:10:38.601> should<00:10:38.906> have.
00:10:39.404 --> 00:10:44.990
And<00:10:40.191> now<00:10:40.367> I<00:10:40.447> go<00:10:40.672> back<00:10:41.009> and<00:10:41.411> realize<00:10:41.812> there's<00:10:41.972> a<00:10:42.037> reason<00:10:42.358> why<00:10:42.550> these<00:10:42.775> books<00:10:43.016> have<00:10:43.096> been<00:10:43.176> around<00:10:43.401> for<00:10:43.513> so<00:10:43.738> long<00:10:43.979> and<00:10:44.059> why<00:10:44.139> they've<00:10:44.300> been<00:10:44.445> so<00:10:44.605> enduring.
00:10:45.504 --> 00:10:47.992
And<00:10:45.584> I've<00:10:45.745> really<00:10:45.986> been<00:10:46.130> able<00:10:46.307> to<00:10:46.403> enjoy<00:10:46.772> them<00:10:47.173> and<00:10:47.254> appreciate<00:10:47.751> them<00:10:47.912> now.
00:10:48.072 --> 00:10:52.985
And<00:10:48.153> I<00:10:48.233> wish<00:10:48.458> I<00:10:48.538> had<00:10:48.715> the<00:10:48.795> first<00:10:49.036> go<00:10:49.212> around<00:10:49.501> when<00:10:49.581> I<00:10:49.662> had<00:10:49.822> somebody<00:10:50.079> who<00:10:50.159> was<00:10:50.304> actually<00:10:50.561> trying<00:10:50.721> to<00:10:50.785> sit<00:10:50.962> there<00:10:51.058> and<00:10:51.138> explain<00:10:51.909> why<00:10:52.070> they<00:10:52.166> were<00:10:52.246> so<00:10:52.423> important<00:10:52.808> to<00:10:52.904> me.
00:10:53.049 --> 00:10:55.071
So<00:10:54.172> that<00:10:54.317> was<00:10:54.413> a<00:10:54.477> wonderful<00:10:54.734> book.
00:10:55.617 --> 00:11:03.030
One<00:10:55.762> of<00:10:55.794> my<00:10:55.938> favorite<00:10:56.259> books<00:10:56.982> is<00:10:57.287> Heart<00:10:57.479> of<00:10:57.559> Darkness,<00:10:58.330> and<00:10:58.442> I<00:10:58.491> actually<00:10:58.812> just<00:10:58.972> had<00:10:59.068> the<00:10:59.213> opportunity<00:11:00.096> to<00:11:00.192> meet<00:11:00.416> somebody<00:11:00.737> who<00:11:00.913> worked<00:11:01.459> on<00:11:01.876> the<00:11:01.956> film<00:11:02.292> Apocalypse<00:11:02.838> Now.
00:11:04.024 --> 00:11:08.418
So<00:11:04.185> we<00:11:04.281> were<00:11:04.361> able<00:11:04.521> to<00:11:04.601> compare<00:11:04.922> notes<00:11:05.147> because<00:11:05.580> Apocalypse<00:11:06.045> Now<00:11:06.205> is<00:11:06.365> based<00:11:06.670> on<00:11:06.702> the<00:11:07.071> Joseph<00:11:07.311> Conrad<00:11:07.568> book<00:11:07.728> Heart<00:11:07.888> of<00:11:07.985> Darkness.
00:11:09.075 --> 00:11:10.101
Um,<00:11:09.412> incredible<00:11:09.813> guy.
00:11:10.213 --> 00:11:10.470
He—.
00:11:10.518 --> 00:11:23.634
This<00:11:10.678> was<00:11:10.839> his<00:11:11.592> first<00:11:11.961> movie<00:11:12.138> he<00:11:12.282> worked<00:11:12.522> on<00:11:12.619> as<00:11:12.779> an<00:11:12.859> entire—<00:11:13.244> in<00:11:13.420> his<00:11:13.581> entire<00:11:13.982> career<00:11:14.302> was<00:11:14.398> Apocalypse<00:11:14.880> Now,<00:11:15.088> which<00:11:15.200> is<00:11:15.328> one<00:11:15.441> of<00:11:15.505> the<00:11:15.810> most<00:11:16.932> successful<00:11:17.990> films,<00:11:18.535> I<00:11:18.632> think,<00:11:19.353> both<00:11:19.818> critically<00:11:20.476> and,<00:11:21.341> um,<00:11:22.143> from<00:11:22.320> an<00:11:22.384> audience<00:11:22.640> perspective<00:11:23.121> of<00:11:23.266> all<00:11:23.362> time.
00:11:23.682 --> 00:11:27.771
So<00:11:24.324> hoping<00:11:24.628> that<00:11:24.725> we<00:11:24.885> can<00:11:25.270> replicate<00:11:25.687> some<00:11:25.847> of<00:11:25.879> that<00:11:26.007> success<00:11:26.408> here<00:11:26.569> with<00:11:26.729> what<00:11:26.809> we're<00:11:26.905> doing<00:11:27.050> at<00:11:27.082> My<00:11:27.210> Pocket<00:11:27.483> Lawyer.
00:11:28.357 --> 00:11:37.540
Given<00:11:28.584> how<00:11:28.762> deep<00:11:28.989> you've<00:11:29.151> gone<00:11:29.556> in<00:11:29.880> AI,<00:11:30.448> what<00:11:30.610> are<00:11:30.691> your<00:11:30.853> thoughts<00:11:31.193> on<00:11:31.339> like<00:11:31.501> the<00:11:31.582> future<00:11:31.922> of<00:11:32.084> AI,<00:11:32.570> its<00:11:32.732> implications<00:11:33.381> on<00:11:33.543> society,<00:11:34.808> and<00:11:35.293> how<00:11:35.552> it's<00:11:35.713> gonna<00:11:35.875> be<00:11:36.101> used<00:11:36.360> within<00:11:36.667> companies<00:11:37.087> like<00:11:37.249> yours?
00:11:39.092 --> 00:11:40.838
That<00:11:39.205> is<00:11:39.350> an<00:11:39.415> extremely<00:11:39.997> important<00:11:40.385> question.
00:11:41.856 --> 00:11:52.053
My<00:11:41.953> fiancée<00:11:42.597> was<00:11:42.903> reading<00:11:43.949> the<00:11:44.368> story<00:11:44.770> of<00:11:44.867> the<00:11:44.995> Tower<00:11:45.334> of<00:11:45.495> Babel<00:11:45.881> this<00:11:46.122> morning,<00:11:46.927> and<00:11:47.249> not<00:11:47.410> a<00:11:47.426> lot<00:11:47.587> of<00:11:47.636> people<00:11:47.861> know<00:11:47.990> this,<00:11:48.231> but<00:11:48.376> that's<00:11:48.634> a<00:11:48.714> story<00:11:49.294> about<00:11:49.664> how<00:11:49.761> technology<00:11:50.405> can<00:11:50.566> be<00:11:50.727> used<00:11:51.129> either<00:11:51.371> for<00:11:51.500> good<00:11:51.630> or<00:11:51.760> for<00:11:51.922> bad.
00:11:52.199 --> 00:12:06.710
And<00:11:52.329> so<00:11:52.996> in<00:11:53.077> the<00:11:53.159> story,<00:11:53.484> just<00:11:53.663> to<00:11:53.809> remind<00:11:54.541> people<00:11:54.932> who<00:11:55.029> maybe<00:11:55.257> haven't<00:11:55.501> read<00:11:55.664> it<00:11:55.761> recently,<00:11:57.424> The<00:11:58.787> people<00:11:59.108> who<00:11:59.172> are<00:11:59.333> building<00:11:59.573> the<00:11:59.669> Tower<00:11:59.990> of<00:12:00.054> Babel<00:12:01.177> want<00:12:01.418> to<00:12:02.059> build<00:12:02.300> a<00:12:02.396> tower<00:12:02.701> to<00:12:02.813> the<00:12:02.941> heavens<00:12:03.615> so<00:12:03.839> as<00:12:04.064> to<00:12:05.283> make<00:12:05.507> themselves<00:12:05.924> famous,<00:12:06.245> basically.
00:12:07.288 --> 00:12:18.932
And<00:12:08.635> as<00:12:08.811> they<00:12:09.533> begin<00:12:10.239> building<00:12:10.961> and<00:12:11.073> they<00:12:11.217> realize<00:12:11.618> what<00:12:11.779> the<00:12:11.859> technology<00:12:12.500> that<00:12:12.597> they're<00:12:12.741> capable<00:12:13.206> of<00:12:13.366> can<00:12:13.543> do,<00:12:14.329> it<00:12:15.051> gets<00:12:15.227> to<00:12:15.323> the<00:12:15.468> point<00:12:15.772> where<00:12:16.109> they<00:12:16.253> are<00:12:16.350> no<00:12:16.574> longer<00:12:17.793> building<00:12:18.114> for<00:12:18.226> the<00:12:18.274> right<00:12:18.515> reasons.
00:12:19.541 --> 00:12:21.819
They're<00:12:19.718> building<00:12:20.023> for<00:12:20.584> a<00:12:21.001> harmful<00:12:21.338> set<00:12:21.482> of<00:12:21.546> reasons.
00:12:21.867 --> 00:12:32.355
And<00:12:21.963> so<00:12:22.605> I<00:12:22.685> look<00:12:22.861> to<00:12:23.006> what<00:12:23.246> technology<00:12:23.728> can<00:12:23.872> do<00:12:23.984> now,<00:12:24.594> and<00:12:24.834> we<00:12:24.930> have<00:12:25.813> We've<00:12:25.974> created<00:12:26.279> unbelievable<00:12:26.697> technologies<00:12:27.565> over<00:12:27.983> the<00:12:28.063> past<00:12:28.288> 20<00:12:28.529> years<00:12:28.947> and<00:12:29.253> absolutely<00:12:29.896> over<00:12:30.008> the<00:12:30.072> past<00:12:30.313> 6<00:12:30.555> months<00:12:30.731> and<00:12:30.860> 1<00:12:30.956> year<00:12:31.197> with<00:12:31.519> what<00:12:31.679> we've<00:12:31.840> seen<00:12:32.001> with<00:12:32.146> AI.
00:12:32.563 --> 00:12:42.092
And<00:12:32.644> these<00:12:33.447> are<00:12:33.528> technologies<00:12:34.074> that<00:12:34.171> have<00:12:34.396> unbelievable<00:12:34.878> implications<00:12:35.520> for<00:12:36.645> positive<00:12:39.312> impacts<00:12:39.859> on<00:12:39.955> humanity,<00:12:40.518> but<00:12:40.694> they<00:12:41.080> are<00:12:41.225> also<00:12:41.417> very<00:12:41.658> dangerous.
00:12:42.189 --> 00:12:44.861
I<00:12:42.205> mean,<00:12:42.349> you<00:12:42.446> just<00:12:42.607> think<00:12:42.751> about,<00:12:43.024> like,<00:12:43.169> take<00:12:43.249> it<00:12:43.410> back<00:12:43.635> to<00:12:43.731> the<00:12:43.780> first<00:12:43.973> technology,<00:12:44.441> fire.
00:12:45.183 --> 00:12:51.896
Fire<00:12:45.571> has<00:12:45.909> given<00:12:46.216> us<00:12:46.781> everything<00:12:47.184> that<00:12:47.281> we've<00:12:47.426> been<00:12:47.507> able<00:12:47.700> to<00:12:47.830> accomplish<00:12:48.330> as<00:12:48.878> a<00:12:48.911> species,<00:12:49.863> but<00:12:49.959> at<00:12:50.024> the<00:12:50.088> same<00:12:50.331> time,<00:12:50.750> it<00:12:50.815> can<00:12:50.911> be<00:12:51.073> horribly<00:12:51.395> destructive.
00:12:51.944 --> 00:13:14.927
So<00:12:52.589> when<00:12:52.686> I<00:12:52.751> look<00:12:52.864> at<00:12:53.074> AI,<00:12:55.294> I<00:12:55.375> think<00:12:55.616> there<00:12:55.921> are,<00:12:59.152> there<00:12:59.377> are<00:12:59.473> considerations<00:13:00.518> with<00:13:00.743> regard<00:13:01.225> to<00:13:02.591> ethical<00:13:02.993> development,<00:13:03.652> responsible<00:13:04.280> development,<00:13:05.246> that<00:13:05.342> especially<00:13:05.745> when<00:13:05.841> you're<00:13:05.986> dealing<00:13:06.292> in<00:13:06.324> these<00:13:06.534> categories<00:13:07.516> that<00:13:07.612> involve<00:13:07.983> high<00:13:08.095> stakes<00:13:08.562> such<00:13:08.804> as<00:13:09.110> financial<00:13:09.528> advice,<00:13:10.333> healthcare<00:13:10.752> advice,<00:13:11.299> legal<00:13:11.541> information,<00:13:12.748> you<00:13:12.893> really<00:13:13.135> have<00:13:13.280> to<00:13:13.554> develop<00:13:13.942> them<00:13:14.103> in<00:13:14.184> a<00:13:14.200> responsible<00:13:14.846> way.
00:13:14.991 --> 00:13:22.488
And<00:13:15.088> I<00:13:15.169> think<00:13:15.330> that's<00:13:15.557> why<00:13:15.718> it's<00:13:15.879> so<00:13:15.960> important<00:13:16.542> that<00:13:17.511> especially<00:13:17.898> you<00:13:18.060> look<00:13:18.156> to<00:13:18.253> the<00:13:18.383> field<00:13:18.641> of<00:13:18.802> legal<00:13:18.980> technology,<00:13:19.529> the<00:13:19.610> field<00:13:19.836> that<00:13:19.917> we're<00:13:20.078> operating<00:13:20.643> in,<00:13:21.127> you<00:13:21.208> have<00:13:21.402> to<00:13:21.451> have<00:13:21.629> involvement<00:13:22.018> from<00:13:22.180> lawyers.
00:13:22.990 --> 00:13:23.508
I'm<00:13:23.103> a<00:13:23.168> lawyer.
00:13:23.573 --> 00:13:49.750
I<00:13:23.654> went<00:13:23.800> to<00:13:23.881> law<00:13:23.978> school,<00:13:24.302> took<00:13:24.464> the<00:13:24.529> California<00:13:25.015> Bar,<00:13:25.582> and<00:13:25.841> we<00:13:25.987> started<00:13:26.327> building<00:13:26.570> this<00:13:26.797> with<00:13:27.040> a,<00:13:29.509> a<00:13:29.589> focus<00:13:30.168> from<00:13:30.409> day<00:13:30.714> one<00:13:31.116> on<00:13:31.276> how<00:13:31.373> to<00:13:31.533> build<00:13:31.758> this<00:13:31.935> in<00:13:32.080> a<00:13:32.176> way<00:13:32.899> that<00:13:33.205> was<00:13:34.410> respectful<00:13:35.374> of<00:13:35.647> the<00:13:35.792> regulations<00:13:36.676> that<00:13:36.981> were<00:13:37.238> created<00:13:37.801> by<00:13:38.106> lawyers<00:13:38.363> who<00:13:38.444> came<00:13:38.605> before<00:13:38.990> us,<00:13:39.634> that<00:13:39.811> were<00:13:40.293> observant<00:13:40.872> of<00:13:41.001> the<00:13:41.081> challenges<00:13:41.821> that<00:13:42.850> consumers<00:13:43.429> and<00:13:43.509> small<00:13:43.751> businesses<00:13:44.314> face<00:13:44.619> as<00:13:44.716> a<00:13:44.780> result<00:13:45.021> of<00:13:45.118> those<00:13:45.278> regulations,<00:13:46.389> and<00:13:46.805> trying<00:13:47.072> to<00:13:47.321> innovate<00:13:47.721> in<00:13:47.804> ways<00:13:48.153> that<00:13:48.836> put<00:13:48.996> the<00:13:49.077> consumer<00:13:49.494> first.
00:13:49.831 --> 00:14:01.526
So<00:13:51.274> as<00:13:51.355> you<00:13:51.483> look<00:13:51.643> to<00:13:51.740> what<00:13:52.125> AI<00:13:52.301> can<00:13:52.462> do,<00:13:52.847> what<00:13:53.087> all<00:13:53.184> these<00:13:53.328> technologies<00:13:53.825> can<00:13:53.970> do,<00:13:54.467> they<00:13:54.547> have<00:13:55.093> unbelievable<00:13:55.590> implications<00:13:56.392> for<00:13:56.857> positive<00:13:57.194> impacts<00:13:57.515> on<00:13:57.595> humanity,<00:13:58.478> but<00:13:58.654> they<00:13:58.734> need<00:13:58.879> to<00:13:58.959> be<00:13:59.360> built<00:13:59.665> out<00:13:59.921> in<00:14:00.066> a<00:14:00.483> very<00:14:00.804> responsible<00:14:01.349> way.
00:14:02.248 --> 00:14:15.810
How<00:14:02.344> do<00:14:02.472> you<00:14:02.569> think<00:14:02.745> about,<00:14:03.114> as<00:14:03.274> a<00:14:03.355> lawyer<00:14:03.611> in<00:14:03.691> particular,<00:14:04.173> but<00:14:04.413> even<00:14:04.654> as<00:14:04.895> the<00:14:05.071> CEO<00:14:05.617> of<00:14:05.697> an<00:14:05.841> AI<00:14:06.098> company,<00:14:07.044> how<00:14:07.125> do<00:14:07.205> you<00:14:07.285> think<00:14:07.462> about<00:14:07.766> like<00:14:08.488> when<00:14:08.601> it<00:14:08.665> comes<00:14:08.986> to<00:14:09.130> regulation,<00:14:10.670> whether,<00:14:11.376> you<00:14:11.408> know,<00:14:11.713> these<00:14:11.953> big<00:14:12.178> tech<00:14:12.339> companies<00:14:12.756> could<00:14:13.060> easily<00:14:13.381> get<00:14:13.622> regulatory<00:14:14.264> capture<00:14:15.472> right?
00:14:16.051 --> 00:14:23.373
It's<00:14:16.341> where<00:14:17.805> it's<00:14:17.966> hard<00:14:19.012> for<00:14:19.511> smaller<00:14:20.219> companies<00:14:20.621> to<00:14:20.766> compete<00:14:21.410> because<00:14:21.683> the<00:14:21.764> regulations<00:14:22.391> would<00:14:22.552> kind<00:14:22.713> of<00:14:22.874> favor<00:14:23.196> them.
00:14:23.421 --> 00:14:24.129
Does<00:14:23.501> that<00:14:23.614> make<00:14:23.823> sense?
00:14:24.582 --> 00:14:27.078
It's<00:14:24.664> kind<00:14:24.729> of<00:14:24.762> like<00:14:24.908> this<00:14:25.153> open<00:14:25.398> source<00:14:25.790> versus<00:14:26.132> closed<00:14:26.540> source<00:14:26.964> problem.
00:14:30.455 --> 00:14:34.435
We<00:14:30.633> see<00:14:30.875> it<00:14:31.005> a<00:14:31.021> lot<00:14:31.264> in<00:14:31.345> our<00:14:31.442> space,<00:14:32.154> in<00:14:32.218> the<00:14:32.251> space<00:14:32.704> of<00:14:32.947> the,<00:14:33.367> in<00:14:33.545> the<00:14:33.853> legal<00:14:34.095> field.
00:14:34.969 --> 00:14:41.539
So<00:14:35.552> interestingly<00:14:36.134> enough,<00:14:36.863> it<00:14:36.943> is<00:14:37.073> actually<00:14:37.477> not<00:14:37.882> the<00:14:38.384> large<00:14:38.788> technology<00:14:39.338> companies<00:14:39.824> that<00:14:39.921> are<00:14:39.970> the<00:14:40.019> victims<00:14:40.427> of<00:14:40.558> regulatory<00:14:41.065> capture.
00:14:41.621 --> 00:14:46.472
It's<00:14:41.785> often<00:14:42.193> the<00:14:43.373> bar<00:14:43.614> associations<00:14:44.882> and<00:14:45.220> the<00:14:45.621> lawyers<00:14:45.942> themselves.
00:14:46.889 --> 00:14:50.629
So<00:14:47.467> as<00:14:47.563> you<00:14:47.628> can<00:14:47.788> imagine,<00:14:48.189> lawyers<00:14:48.510> like<00:14:48.671> to<00:14:48.751> be<00:14:48.896> the<00:14:48.992> only<00:14:49.137> ones<00:14:49.313> who<00:14:49.393> get<00:14:49.554> paid<00:14:49.779> to<00:14:49.875> give<00:14:50.036> legal<00:14:50.276> advice.
00:14:51.159 --> 00:15:08.031
And<00:14:51.962> when<00:14:53.230> lawyers<00:14:53.712> can<00:14:54.611> look<00:14:54.787> at<00:14:54.867> a<00:14:54.932> technology<00:14:55.959> and<00:14:56.537> maybe<00:14:56.778> incorrectly<00:14:57.404> assume<00:14:57.821> that<00:14:57.982> it's<00:14:58.287> one<00:14:58.463> that<00:14:58.560> might<00:14:58.784> put<00:14:58.945> them<00:14:59.089> out<00:14:59.186> of<00:14:59.266> a<00:14:59.330> job,<00:15:00.374> they<00:15:00.470> can<00:15:00.631> feel<00:15:01.192> very<00:15:01.497> threatened<00:15:01.835> by<00:15:02.059> it,<00:15:02.140> feel<00:15:02.300> very<00:15:02.477> challenged<00:15:02.878> by<00:15:03.119> it,<00:15:03.504> and<00:15:03.841> try<00:15:04.082> to<00:15:04.162> implement<00:15:04.548> regulations<00:15:05.270> that<00:15:06.249> resist<00:15:06.715> the<00:15:06.795> introduction<00:15:07.212> of<00:15:07.293> that<00:15:07.453> technology.
00:15:08.095 --> 00:15:17.375
That's<00:15:08.272> something<00:15:08.577> that<00:15:08.737> we<00:15:08.818> are<00:15:09.299> very<00:15:10.102> aware<00:15:10.488> of<00:15:10.585> and<00:15:10.665> considerate<00:15:11.132> of<00:15:11.373> and<00:15:11.615> have<00:15:11.776> tried<00:15:12.097> to<00:15:12.677> very<00:15:12.854> thoughtfully<00:15:13.288> and<00:15:13.336> intentionally<00:15:13.883> engage<00:15:14.431> with<00:15:15.074> all<00:15:15.106> members<00:15:15.476> of<00:15:15.509> the<00:15:15.573> legal<00:15:15.798> profession<00:15:16.217> to<00:15:16.265> make<00:15:16.394> sure<00:15:16.555> that<00:15:16.699> that<00:15:16.860> doesn't<00:15:17.070> happen.
00:15:17.424 --> 00:15:24.669
Because<00:15:19.774> I<00:15:19.823> think<00:15:20.547> when<00:15:20.724> we<00:15:20.885> look<00:15:21.127> at<00:15:21.513> the<00:15:21.610> way<00:15:21.771> we've<00:15:21.916> structured<00:15:22.318> our<00:15:22.415> business<00:15:22.721> model,<00:15:22.978> we<00:15:23.075> don't<00:15:23.284> succeed<00:15:23.687> unless<00:15:23.944> law<00:15:24.105> firms<00:15:24.347> succeed.
00:15:25.136 --> 00:15:27.003
And<00:15:25.232> so<00:15:25.474> we<00:15:25.619> are<00:15:25.651> not<00:15:25.860> going<00:15:25.957> to<00:15:26.037> put<00:15:26.279> lawyers<00:15:26.585> out<00:15:26.665> of<00:15:26.730> a<00:15:26.746> job.
00:15:27.067 --> 00:15:29.461
We<00:15:27.147> are<00:15:27.244> going<00:15:27.388> to<00:15:27.469> create<00:15:27.967> much,<00:15:28.272> much<00:15:28.513> more<00:15:28.770> work<00:15:28.995> for<00:15:29.155> lawyers.
00:15:30.232 --> 00:15:33.558
That<00:15:30.377> is<00:15:30.457> not<00:15:30.682> only<00:15:30.939> the—<00:15:31.903> what<00:15:32.015> did<00:15:32.144> I<00:15:32.224> say<00:15:32.369> at<00:15:32.449> the<00:15:32.545> beginning<00:15:32.802> of<00:15:32.867> this<00:15:33.027> conversation?
00:15:33.686 --> 00:15:37.497
It's<00:15:34.297> something<00:15:34.554> like<00:15:35.020> 84%<00:15:35.662> of<00:15:36.321> all<00:15:36.450> legal<00:15:36.673> issues<00:15:36.999> go<00:15:37.102> unaddressed.
00:15:37.600 --> 00:15:42.053
So<00:15:38.392> We<00:15:38.536> want<00:15:38.681> to<00:15:38.713> help<00:15:38.938> get<00:15:39.115> those<00:15:39.275> legal<00:15:39.532> issues<00:15:39.901> to<00:15:40.078> law<00:15:40.239> firms,<00:15:40.785> to<00:15:40.881> lawyers<00:15:41.186> so<00:15:41.363> that<00:15:41.507> they<00:15:41.604> can<00:15:41.748> address<00:15:42.005> them.
00:15:42.102 --> 00:15:51.304
We<00:15:42.230> want<00:15:42.407> to<00:15:42.872> create<00:15:43.370> a<00:15:43.386> more<00:15:43.595> efficient<00:15:43.852> and<00:15:44.013> seamless<00:15:44.414> way<00:15:44.639> for<00:15:44.751> them<00:15:44.976> to<00:15:46.341> be<00:15:46.486> able<00:15:46.662> to<00:15:47.064> help<00:15:47.305> those<00:15:47.530> cases<00:15:47.963> and<00:15:48.044> help<00:15:48.252> those<00:15:48.413> people<00:15:48.895> while<00:15:49.007> it<00:15:49.136> still<00:15:49.393> makes<00:15:50.019> financial<00:15:50.340> sense<00:15:50.581> for<00:15:50.677> them<00:15:50.774> to<00:15:50.902> do<00:15:51.015> so.
00:15:51.866 --> 00:15:55.206
But<00:15:51.914> it's<00:15:52.042> not<00:15:52.203> just<00:15:52.380> the<00:15:52.508> people<00:15:52.749> who<00:15:52.926> are<00:15:53.150> out<00:15:53.263> there<00:15:53.407> who<00:15:53.568> currently<00:15:53.889> aren't<00:15:54.066> being<00:15:54.275> helped<00:15:54.532> that<00:15:54.660> have<00:15:54.789> legal<00:15:55.013> issues.
00:15:55.270 --> 00:15:57.438
It's<00:15:55.399> all<00:15:55.495> the<00:15:55.575> people<00:15:55.816> who<00:15:55.913> don't<00:15:56.121> even<00:15:56.202> know<00:15:56.378> they<00:15:56.523> have<00:15:56.684> legal<00:15:56.876> issues,<00:15:57.262> right?
00:15:57.503 --> 00:15:59.141
So<00:15:58.129> I<00:15:58.145> like<00:15:58.225> to<00:15:58.257> give<00:15:58.466> this<00:15:58.643> example.
00:16:00.056 --> 00:16:04.167
I'm<00:16:00.650> out<00:16:00.795> here<00:16:00.955> in<00:16:01.036> LA,<00:16:01.582> and<00:16:01.742> if<00:16:01.823> you've<00:16:01.935> ever<00:16:02.144> been<00:16:02.240> in<00:16:02.385> LA,<00:16:02.545> you've<00:16:02.722> probably<00:16:03.059> driven<00:16:03.348> on<00:16:03.380> the<00:16:03.509> 405.
00:16:04.649 --> 00:16:07.560
If<00:16:04.729> you<00:16:04.810> haven't,<00:16:05.340> You're<00:16:05.620> very<00:16:05.840> lucky,<00:16:06.140> and<00:16:06.260> I<00:16:06.340> hope<00:16:06.480> you<00:16:06.540> don't<00:16:06.700> ever<00:16:06.860> have<00:16:07.160> to.
00:16:07.740 --> 00:16:10.720
It<00:16:07.800> is<00:16:08.000> one<00:16:08.560> of<00:16:08.640> the<00:16:08.720> most<00:16:08.860> trafficky<00:16:09.320> freeways<00:16:09.680> in<00:16:09.920> the<00:16:09.921> entire<00:16:10.180> world.
00:16:10.720 --> 00:16:17.480
And<00:16:10.940> about<00:16:11.180> 10<00:16:11.440> years<00:16:11.620> ago,<00:16:12.040> they<00:16:12.440> decided<00:16:12.820> they<00:16:12.980> were<00:16:13.140> going<00:16:13.180> to<00:16:13.220> do<00:16:13.379> something<00:16:13.540> about<00:16:13.900> it,<00:16:14.040> and<00:16:14.180> they<00:16:14.340> added<00:16:14.640> 2<00:16:14.880> new<00:16:15.120> lanes<00:16:15.340> on<00:16:15.500> each<00:16:15.700> side<00:16:16.100> to<00:16:16.700> the<00:16:16.860> 405.
00:16:17.480 --> 00:16:20.720
So<00:16:17.700> everybody,<00:16:18.020> when<00:16:18.120> they<00:16:18.260> saw<00:16:18.440> this,<00:16:19.200> they<00:16:19.440> thought,<00:16:19.960> this<00:16:20.020> is<00:16:20.240> amazing.
00:16:20.720 --> 00:16:22.180
There's<00:16:20.940> going<00:16:21.040> to<00:16:21.080> be<00:16:21.180> so<00:16:21.340> much<00:16:21.500> less<00:16:21.780> traffic.
00:16:22.710 --> 00:16:24.710
Can't<00:16:23.160> wait<00:16:23.280> to<00:16:23.380> drive<00:16:23.560> on<00:16:23.720> the<00:16:23.780> 405<00:16:24.260> now.
00:16:24.920 --> 00:16:27.100
What's<00:16:25.220> interesting<00:16:25.500> is<00:16:25.640> that<00:16:25.840> the<00:16:25.841> opposite<00:16:26.200> thing<00:16:26.460> happened.
00:16:27.100 --> 00:16:34.040
All<00:16:27.340> these<00:16:27.500> people<00:16:27.760> who<00:16:27.940> previously<00:16:28.320> took<00:16:28.580> the<00:16:28.800> bus,<00:16:29.200> who<00:16:29.680> biked<00:16:29.980> to<00:16:30.200> work,<00:16:30.720> they<00:16:30.920> got<00:16:31.100> back<00:16:31.360> in<00:16:31.500> their<00:16:31.680> cars<00:16:31.880> because<00:16:32.140> they<00:16:32.320> thought,<00:16:32.640> oh,<00:16:32.840> there<00:16:33.020> are<00:16:33.021> 2<00:16:33.140> new<00:16:33.320> lanes<00:16:33.460> on<00:16:33.620> the<00:16:33.740> freeway.
00:16:34.040 --> 00:16:35.090
It's<00:16:34.200> going<00:16:34.260> to<00:16:34.320> be<00:16:34.460> way<00:16:34.580> less<00:16:34.740> traffic.
00:16:35.220 --> 00:16:38.908
And<00:16:35.320> all<00:16:35.340> this<00:16:35.360> latent<00:16:35.380> demand<00:16:37.272> emerged<00:16:37.753> that<00:16:37.897> hadn't<00:16:38.218> existed<00:16:38.635> before.
00:16:39.677 --> 00:16:43.046
That's<00:16:39.918> what's<00:16:40.078> going<00:16:40.175> to<00:16:40.239> happen<00:16:40.624> when<00:16:40.704> you<00:16:40.800> create<00:16:41.057> legal<00:16:41.265> technology<00:16:41.747> and<00:16:41.843> introduce<00:16:42.244> it<00:16:42.324> into<00:16:42.484> this<00:16:42.709> field.
00:16:43.190 --> 00:16:56.711
All<00:16:43.367> of<00:16:43.511> the<00:16:43.607> people<00:16:43.944> who<00:16:44.088> didn't<00:16:44.409> realize<00:16:44.890> that<00:16:44.987> they,<00:16:45.275> they<00:16:45.436> had<00:16:45.628> legal<00:16:45.917> issues,<00:16:46.318> who<00:16:47.040> didn't<00:16:47.280> think<00:16:47.521> that<00:16:47.681> going<00:16:47.858> to<00:16:48.018> a<00:16:48.098> lawyer<00:16:48.339> was<00:16:48.499> an<00:16:48.724> option,<00:16:49.526> all<00:16:49.638> that<00:16:49.863> latent<00:16:50.135> demand<00:16:50.488> will<00:16:50.568> come<00:16:50.745> out<00:16:50.841> of<00:16:50.921> the<00:16:51.049> woodwork<00:16:51.547> and<00:16:51.611> create<00:16:52.573> way,<00:16:52.974> a<00:16:53.070> way<00:16:53.375> bigger<00:16:54.354> economic<00:16:54.915> pie<00:16:55.396> for<00:16:55.637> lawyers<00:16:55.941> to<00:16:56.022> participate<00:16:56.663> in.
00:16:56.824 --> 00:17:01.042
So<00:16:57.706> in<00:16:57.802> this<00:16:57.978> instance,<00:16:58.925> technology<00:16:59.582> is<00:16:59.711> not<00:16:59.951> shrinking<00:17:00.352> the<00:17:00.433> economic<00:17:00.850> pie.
00:17:01.395 --> 00:17:04.891
It<00:17:01.491> is<00:17:02.117> by<00:17:02.293> far<00:17:02.774> expanding<00:17:03.480> it<00:17:03.560> for<00:17:03.721> all<00:17:03.817> of<00:17:03.961> the<00:17:04.057> participants<00:17:04.619> in<00:17:04.779> there.
00:17:05.244 --> 00:17:07.123
And<00:17:05.822> The<00:17:05.902> industry<00:17:06.224> shouldn't<00:17:06.529> be<00:17:06.625> afraid<00:17:06.947> of<00:17:07.043> it.
00:17:07.171 --> 00:17:07.910
They<00:17:07.252> should<00:17:07.412> embrace<00:17:07.750> it.
00:17:08.714 --> 00:17:16.320
How<00:17:08.858> have<00:17:09.019> you<00:17:09.501> handled<00:17:09.983> the<00:17:10.160> work<00:17:10.401> from<00:17:10.545> home<00:17:11.108> hybrid,<00:17:11.943> everybody<00:17:12.248> in<00:17:12.393> the<00:17:12.553> office,<00:17:13.598> that<00:17:13.774> whole<00:17:13.935> thing<00:17:14.176> that<00:17:14.337> every<00:17:14.513> CEO<00:17:15.076> is<00:17:15.301> trying<00:17:15.510> to<00:17:15.561> navigate<00:17:15.992> right<00:17:16.217> now?
00:17:18.146 --> 00:17:22.596
Well,<00:17:18.242> what's<00:17:18.403> funny<00:17:18.660> is<00:17:18.789> this<00:17:18.901> is<00:17:19.030> now<00:17:19.126> the<00:17:19.222> second<00:17:19.608> company<00:17:20.234> that<00:17:20.491> we<00:17:20.636> founded<00:17:21.198> that<00:17:21.680> is<00:17:21.793> entirely<00:17:22.243> remote.
00:17:23.207 --> 00:17:29.918
And<00:17:23.705> I<00:17:23.785> think<00:17:24.203> the—<00:17:24.910> it<00:17:25.134> involves<00:17:25.616> a<00:17:25.713> good<00:17:25.954> measure<00:17:26.580> of<00:17:26.982> trust<00:17:27.480> in<00:17:27.560> the<00:17:27.641> people<00:17:27.866> you<00:17:28.029> work<00:17:28.208> with<00:17:28.534> and<00:17:28.680> individual<00:17:29.104> responsibility.
00:17:29.983 --> 00:17:33.388
I<00:17:30.000> was<00:17:30.309> describing<00:17:30.668> a<00:17:30.717> moment<00:17:30.961> ago<00:17:31.222> how<00:17:31.792> everybody<00:17:32.183> has<00:17:32.346> a<00:17:32.362> different<00:17:32.688> productivity<00:17:33.241> method.
00:17:34.016 --> 00:17:39.867
And<00:17:34.353> you<00:17:34.449> have<00:17:34.657> to<00:17:34.817> trust<00:17:35.218> that<00:17:35.379> the<00:17:35.475> people<00:17:35.779> you<00:17:35.859> are<00:17:36.020> working<00:17:36.340> with<00:17:37.062> are<00:17:37.559> going<00:17:37.719> to<00:17:37.799> get<00:17:38.024> their<00:17:38.184> work<00:17:38.360> done,<00:17:38.601> whether<00:17:38.841> you<00:17:38.921> see<00:17:39.082> them<00:17:39.242> doing<00:17:39.418> it<00:17:39.498> or<00:17:39.578> not.
00:17:40.204 --> 00:17:43.233
And<00:17:40.284> we<00:17:40.364> have<00:17:40.460> an<00:17:40.524> unbelievable<00:17:41.149> culture<00:17:41.470> and<00:17:41.550> trust,<00:17:42.127> uh,<00:17:42.448> in<00:17:42.528> My<00:17:42.688> Pocket<00:17:43.009> Lawyer.
00:17:43.313 --> 00:17:48.860
And<00:17:43.891> I<00:17:43.955> think<00:17:44.131> last<00:17:44.452> night<00:17:44.997> I<00:17:45.397> had<00:17:45.510> a<00:17:45.574> deliverable<00:17:46.135> come<00:17:46.375> up<00:17:46.552> around<00:17:47.754> 7<00:17:48.042> o'clock<00:17:48.363> my<00:17:48.539> time.
00:17:49.164 --> 00:17:51.393
Uh,<00:17:49.485> I'm<00:17:49.661> a<00:17:49.726> very<00:17:49.982> early<00:17:50.287> worker,<00:17:50.767> not<00:17:50.880> a<00:17:50.944> late<00:17:51.168> worker.
00:17:51.441 --> 00:17:55.160
So<00:17:51.745> I<00:17:51.825> worked<00:17:52.066> until<00:17:52.290> about<00:17:52.531> 10,<00:17:52.787> handed<00:17:53.092> it<00:17:53.172> off<00:17:53.348> to<00:17:53.509> folks<00:17:53.813> who<00:17:53.909> are<00:17:54.230> late<00:17:54.390> workers<00:17:54.711> on<00:17:54.791> the<00:17:54.935> team.
00:17:55.577 --> 00:18:01.572
They<00:17:55.673> were<00:17:55.817> working<00:17:56.073> until<00:17:57.035> 1<00:17:57.212> or<00:17:57.276> 2,<00:17:57.997> and<00:17:58.077> then<00:17:58.222> I<00:17:58.302> woke<00:17:58.542> up,<00:17:58.799> picked<00:17:58.975> it<00:17:59.039> right<00:17:59.263> back<00:17:59.504> up<00:17:59.680> until<00:17:59.921> they<00:18:00.065> woke<00:18:00.305> up,<00:18:00.482> and<00:18:00.562> then<00:18:00.706> handed<00:18:00.899> it<00:18:00.963> right<00:18:01.123> back<00:18:01.347> to<00:18:01.444> them.
00:18:01.620 --> 00:18:07.651
And<00:18:01.748> so<00:18:02.005> it's<00:18:02.229> a<00:18:02.389> bit<00:18:02.502> of<00:18:02.582> a<00:18:02.646> baton<00:18:03.047> handoff<00:18:03.912> that,<00:18:04.089> that<00:18:04.409> lets<00:18:04.634> you<00:18:04.794> leverage<00:18:05.211> the<00:18:05.291> different<00:18:05.660> working<00:18:05.852> styles<00:18:06.430> of<00:18:06.735> different<00:18:06.976> people<00:18:07.281> on<00:18:07.313> the<00:18:07.442> team.
00:18:07.699 --> 00:18:15.101
Whereas<00:18:08.421> we<00:18:08.566> were<00:18:08.726> all<00:18:08.887> forced<00:18:09.080> to<00:18:09.160> be<00:18:09.288> in<00:18:09.369> the<00:18:09.449> office<00:18:09.706> together,<00:18:11.135> you<00:18:11.295> wouldn't<00:18:11.472> be<00:18:11.568> able<00:18:11.665> to<00:18:11.777> have<00:18:11.970> that,<00:18:12.195> that<00:18:12.355> type<00:18:12.660> of<00:18:13.880> collaborative<00:18:14.748> work.
00:18:15.470 --> 00:18:27.657
You<00:18:15.566> get<00:18:15.711> a<00:18:15.727> different<00:18:16.032> type<00:18:16.144> of<00:18:16.209> collaborative<00:18:16.690> work,<00:18:16.915> but<00:18:17.076> you,<00:18:17.638> you<00:18:17.734> don't<00:18:17.895> get<00:18:18.135> to<00:18:18.601> leverage<00:18:19.099> the<00:18:20.143> different<00:18:20.544> working<00:18:20.865> styles<00:18:21.668> and<00:18:21.748> different<00:18:22.085> skill<00:18:22.471> sets<00:18:23.177> of<00:18:23.659> employees<00:18:24.317> who<00:18:24.703> are<00:18:25.505> honestly<00:18:25.843> best<00:18:26.084> left<00:18:26.244> to<00:18:26.324> work<00:18:26.501> independently<00:18:26.967> in<00:18:27.047> many<00:18:27.207> cases.
00:18:28.075 --> 00:18:29.343
So<00:18:28.251> that's<00:18:28.476> been<00:18:28.572> a<00:18:28.637> wonderful<00:18:28.958> thing<00:18:29.118> for<00:18:29.279> us.
00:18:29.439 --> 00:18:40.630
And<00:18:29.520> I<00:18:29.536> think<00:18:29.760> another<00:18:30.001> wonderful<00:18:30.322> thing<00:18:30.515> is<00:18:30.660> that<00:18:31.784> if<00:18:32.024> we<00:18:32.651> were<00:18:32.747> to<00:18:32.827> have<00:18:32.972> had<00:18:33.775> a<00:18:33.791> physical<00:18:34.497> office<00:18:35.236> this<00:18:35.396> entire<00:18:35.782> time,<00:18:36.103> we<00:18:36.199> would<00:18:36.344> have<00:18:36.440> only<00:18:36.665> been<00:18:36.761> able<00:18:36.986> to<00:18:37.098> leverage<00:18:37.628> the<00:18:38.270> talent<00:18:38.607> pools<00:18:39.394> of<00:18:39.635> the<00:18:39.715> Los<00:18:39.972> Angeles<00:18:40.374> area.
00:18:40.679 --> 00:18:48.241
And<00:18:40.759> honestly,<00:18:41.241> again,<00:18:41.481> going<00:18:41.594> back<00:18:41.738> to<00:18:41.803> the<00:18:41.963> traffic,<00:18:42.782> really<00:18:43.087> only<00:18:43.328> one<00:18:43.505> portion<00:18:43.826> of<00:18:43.970> LA<00:18:44.227> because<00:18:44.532> you<00:18:44.612> don't<00:18:44.693> want<00:18:44.837> to<00:18:44.869> be<00:18:45.030> working<00:18:45.367> in<00:18:45.672> West<00:18:45.977> LA<00:18:46.218> and<00:18:46.298> living<00:18:46.475> in<00:18:46.539> East<00:18:46.780> LA<00:18:47.037> and<00:18:47.358> driving<00:18:47.679> back<00:18:47.904> and<00:18:48.000> forth.
00:18:48.707 --> 00:18:51.870
So<00:18:48.819> it<00:18:48.883> really<00:18:49.108> limits<00:18:49.365> you<00:18:49.526> in<00:18:49.590> terms<00:18:49.863> of<00:18:49.991> who<00:18:50.088> you're<00:18:50.312> able<00:18:50.489> to<00:18:50.569> hire,<00:18:50.890> who<00:18:50.971> you're<00:18:51.147> able<00:18:51.276> to<00:18:51.372> work<00:18:51.613> with.
00:18:52.319 --> 00:18:57.998
Whereas<00:18:52.817> having<00:18:53.074> a<00:18:53.138> remote<00:18:53.459> workforce,<00:18:54.487> we<00:18:55.225> have<00:18:55.482> employees<00:18:56.253> that<00:18:56.414> are<00:18:57.300> all<00:18:57.479> over<00:18:57.657> the<00:18:57.787> US.
00:18:58.273 --> 00:19:01.258
We've<00:18:58.436> worked<00:18:58.614> with<00:18:58.760> contractors<00:18:59.393> who<00:18:59.490> are<00:18:59.652> in<00:18:59.734> South<00:19:00.009> America,<00:19:00.545> who<00:19:00.626> are<00:19:00.723> in<00:19:00.804> Eastern<00:19:01.112> Europe.
00:19:02.817 --> 00:19:08.069
It's—<00:19:03.142> I<00:19:03.240> got<00:19:03.402> off<00:19:03.484> the<00:19:03.630> phone<00:19:03.955> today<00:19:04.280> where<00:19:04.362> we<00:19:04.524> had,<00:19:05.191> I<00:19:05.272> think,<00:19:05.451> 4<00:19:05.614> different<00:19:05.955> time<00:19:06.150> zones<00:19:07.548> covered<00:19:07.792> on<00:19:07.857> the<00:19:07.955> call.
00:19:08.833 --> 00:19:16.989
And<00:19:08.930> so<00:19:09.174> it's,<00:19:10.824> I<00:19:10.921> think,<00:19:11.391> a<00:19:11.472> very<00:19:11.796> productive<00:19:12.362> thing<00:19:12.767> for<00:19:13.512> a<00:19:13.674> small<00:19:14.014> startup,<00:19:16.213> especially.
00:19:17.507 --> 00:19:19.092
And<00:19:17.588> I'll<00:19:17.830> just<00:19:17.992> mention<00:19:18.234> one<00:19:18.396> last<00:19:18.623> point<00:19:18.865> on<00:19:18.962> this.
00:19:19.755 --> 00:19:26.670
You<00:19:19.852> look<00:19:20.078> to<00:19:20.175> the<00:19:20.321> cost<00:19:20.580> structure<00:19:21.388> that<00:19:22.181> a<00:19:22.213> law<00:19:22.359> firm<00:19:22.601> has,<00:19:22.925> for<00:19:23.087> example,<00:19:23.572> and<00:19:23.669> how<00:19:23.879> we're<00:19:24.041> able<00:19:24.219> to<00:19:24.364> pass<00:19:24.769> on<00:19:24.930> so<00:19:25.108> many<00:19:25.254> of<00:19:25.302> these<00:19:25.400> cost<00:19:25.603> savings<00:19:26.026> to<00:19:26.213> our<00:19:26.433> consumers.
00:19:27.478 --> 00:19:33.918
I<00:19:27.526> was<00:19:27.623> talking<00:19:27.879> to<00:19:27.944> somebody<00:19:28.265> last<00:19:28.506> week<00:19:28.811> who<00:19:28.891> said<00:19:29.132> they,<00:19:29.694> um,<00:19:30.112> is<00:19:30.192> a<00:19:30.256> photographer<00:19:30.915> who<00:19:31.156> takes<00:19:31.396> a<00:19:31.413> lot<00:19:31.557> of<00:19:31.637> photos<00:19:32.103> of,<00:19:32.344> um,<00:19:32.681> lawyers<00:19:33.002> and<00:19:33.067> law<00:19:33.163> firms,<00:19:33.388> things<00:19:33.564> like<00:19:33.709> that.
00:19:34.512 --> 00:19:35.572
Um,<00:19:34.689> those<00:19:34.785> are<00:19:34.849> a<00:19:34.913> lot<00:19:35.010> of<00:19:35.042> his<00:19:35.154> clients.
00:19:35.813 --> 00:19:40.727
And<00:19:35.957> he<00:19:37.017> went<00:19:37.258> to<00:19:37.419> take<00:19:37.660> a<00:19:37.724> photo<00:19:38.141> of<00:19:38.366> a<00:19:38.784> client<00:19:39.812> and<00:19:39.876> he<00:19:39.908> met<00:19:40.149> them<00:19:40.229> in<00:19:40.309> their<00:19:40.454> office.
00:19:40.775 --> 00:19:42.606
They<00:19:40.871> were<00:19:40.952> the<00:19:41.112> only<00:19:41.273> person<00:19:41.980> in<00:19:42.076> the<00:19:42.381> office.
00:19:42.702 --> 00:19:46.540
It<00:19:42.783> would—<00:19:42.943> they<00:19:43.104> had<00:19:43.280> the<00:19:43.923> top<00:19:44.244> 2<00:19:44.469> floors<00:19:44.822> of<00:19:44.886> one<00:19:45.047> of<00:19:45.111> the<00:19:45.207> biggest<00:19:45.513> buildings<00:19:45.850> in<00:19:45.914> Century<00:19:46.251> City.
00:19:47.616 --> 00:19:50.636
That's<00:19:47.857> all<00:19:48.002> costs,<00:19:48.484> uh,<00:19:48.660> part<00:19:48.805> of<00:19:48.885> a<00:19:48.901> cost<00:19:49.062> structure<00:19:49.399> that<00:19:49.479> gets<00:19:49.624> passed<00:19:49.945> on<00:19:50.025> to<00:19:50.106> consumers.
00:19:50.989 --> 00:19:54.249
We<00:19:51.149> don't<00:19:51.294> have<00:19:51.455> that<00:19:51.615> cost<00:19:51.744> structure<00:19:52.177> at<00:19:52.258> all,<00:19:52.418> and<00:19:52.482> we<00:19:52.514> can<00:19:52.595> pass<00:19:52.900> all<00:19:52.996> those<00:19:53.157> costs<00:19:53.350> saving<00:19:53.639> on<00:19:53.719> to<00:19:53.799> consumers.
00:19:54.747 --> 00:19:55.501
Yeah,<00:19:54.907> that's<00:19:55.084> a<00:19:55.148> good<00:19:55.244> point.
00:19:55.550 --> 00:20:02.004
The<00:19:55.646> cost<00:19:56.063> of<00:19:56.144> an<00:19:56.272> office<00:19:56.690> is,<00:19:57.091> is<00:19:57.252> something<00:19:57.573> that<00:19:57.653> needs<00:19:57.894> to<00:19:57.974> be<00:19:58.119> taken<00:19:58.375> into<00:19:58.681> consideration<00:19:59.419> when<00:20:00.142> you're<00:20:00.238> thinking<00:20:00.479> about<00:20:00.688> the<00:20:00.848> work<00:20:01.009> from<00:20:01.169> home<00:20:01.346> hybrid<00:20:01.731> stuff.
00:20:02.614 --> 00:20:07.110
And<00:20:02.807> I<00:20:02.952> wonder<00:20:03.192> though,<00:20:03.417> like,<00:20:03.594> the<00:20:03.674> people<00:20:03.899> who<00:20:03.979> are<00:20:04.140> like,<00:20:04.316> everybody<00:20:04.638> come<00:20:04.878> back<00:20:05.055> to<00:20:05.183> the<00:20:05.344> office,<00:20:05.762> it's<00:20:05.986> all<00:20:06.067> about<00:20:06.307> culture<00:20:06.789> for<00:20:06.902> them.
00:20:07.753 --> 00:20:10.868
And<00:20:07.993> how<00:20:08.090> do<00:20:08.250> I<00:20:08.331> develop<00:20:08.732> a<00:20:08.796> strong<00:20:09.198> culture<00:20:09.920> within<00:20:10.257> my<00:20:10.418> company?
00:20:11.446 --> 00:20:14.721
How<00:20:11.542> do<00:20:11.767> I<00:20:12.024> develop<00:20:12.505> values<00:20:14.015> for<00:20:14.175> my<00:20:14.352> company?
00:20:15.058 --> 00:20:17.804
How<00:20:15.090> do<00:20:15.219> we<00:20:15.315> come<00:20:15.540> up<00:20:15.652> with<00:20:15.797> those<00:20:17.001> if<00:20:17.146> we're<00:20:17.306> all<00:20:17.467> remote?
00:20:17.868 --> 00:20:19.538
So<00:20:18.061> how<00:20:18.205> would<00:20:18.366> you,<00:20:18.671> how<00:20:18.832> would<00:20:18.928> you<00:20:19.008> answer<00:20:19.249> those?
00:20:21.575 --> 00:20:27.297
Well,<00:20:22.456> I<00:20:22.520> was<00:20:22.617> talking<00:20:23.001> to<00:20:24.043> another<00:20:24.524> friend<00:20:24.636> who's<00:20:24.781> a<00:20:24.861> founder<00:20:25.326> recently,<00:20:25.967> and<00:20:26.047> they<00:20:26.143> just<00:20:26.303> raised<00:20:26.528> their<00:20:26.640> Series<00:20:27.105> B.
00:20:28.468 --> 00:20:43.215
And,<00:20:28.708> you<00:20:28.788> know,<00:20:28.884> for<00:20:29.590> those<00:20:29.830> who<00:20:29.910> aren't<00:20:30.087> in<00:20:30.151> the<00:20:30.471> venture<00:20:30.952> community,<00:20:31.353> basically<00:20:32.235> the<00:20:32.395> stage<00:20:32.956> and<00:20:33.036> maturity<00:20:33.902> of<00:20:34.062> a<00:20:34.158> company,<00:20:34.639> the<00:20:34.703> size<00:20:34.944> of<00:20:35.040> a<00:20:35.104> company<00:20:35.441> can<00:20:35.601> often<00:20:35.906> be<00:20:37.028> tracked<00:20:37.444> by<00:20:37.669> using<00:20:38.166> the<00:20:39.031> stage<00:20:39.304> of<00:20:39.368> fundraising<00:20:40.009> that<00:20:40.170> they've<00:20:42.077> gotten<00:20:42.334> to<00:20:42.654> as<00:20:42.750> a<00:20:42.815> proxy.
00:20:43.279 --> 00:20:47.832
And<00:20:43.360> so<00:20:44.001> you<00:20:44.033> start<00:20:44.257> with<00:20:44.337> the<00:20:44.482> pre-seed,<00:20:44.898> then<00:20:45.043> you<00:20:45.123> raise<00:20:45.235> a<00:20:45.299> seed,<00:20:45.684> then<00:20:45.780> a<00:20:45.796> Series<00:20:46.165> A,<00:20:46.341> Series<00:20:46.662> B,<00:20:46.838> C,<00:20:47.207> D,<00:20:47.383> so<00:20:47.608> forth.
00:20:47.944 --> 00:20:52.834
And<00:20:48.008> usually<00:20:48.265> around<00:20:48.986> Series<00:20:49.307> D<00:20:49.467> or<00:20:49.707> E,<00:20:49.948> companies<00:20:50.413> will<00:20:50.509> either<00:20:50.733> exit<00:20:51.631> via<00:20:51.791> an<00:20:51.872> acquisition<00:20:52.337> or<00:20:52.417> an<00:20:52.497> IPO.
00:20:52.914 --> 00:20:58.545
And<00:20:53.011> so<00:20:53.187> this<00:20:53.941> friend<00:20:54.101> of<00:20:54.133> mine,<00:20:55.401> he<00:20:56.123> just<00:20:56.347> raised<00:20:56.588> a<00:20:56.604> Series<00:20:57.005> B<00:20:57.230> from<00:20:57.390> a<00:20:57.406> fantastic<00:20:57.807> group<00:20:57.984> of<00:20:58.032> investors.
00:20:59.090 --> 00:21:02.187
And<00:20:59.572> one<00:20:59.732> of<00:20:59.796> the<00:20:59.876> challenges<00:21:00.278> he<00:21:00.358> was<00:21:00.518> facing<00:21:01.336> had<00:21:01.481> to<00:21:01.561> do<00:21:01.657> with<00:21:01.769> scaling.
00:21:02.684 --> 00:21:10.865
So<00:21:03.486> when<00:21:03.582> you<00:21:03.727> raise<00:21:03.919> that<00:21:04.063> amount<00:21:04.240> of<00:21:04.288> money,<00:21:05.010> you<00:21:05.106> need<00:21:05.267> to<00:21:05.748> put<00:21:05.908> it<00:21:06.053> to<00:21:06.149> work<00:21:06.534> quickly<00:21:06.855> and<00:21:07.015> productively<00:21:07.753> to<00:21:07.913> grow<00:21:08.074> the<00:21:08.218> company,<00:21:08.635> to<00:21:09.101> offer<00:21:09.421> those<00:21:09.598> investors<00:21:09.935> a<00:21:09.999> return<00:21:10.240> on<00:21:10.320> their<00:21:10.400> investment.
00:21:11.764 --> 00:21:16.592
For<00:21:11.908> him,<00:21:12.646> that<00:21:12.903> meant<00:21:14.330> doubling<00:21:14.731> or<00:21:14.876> tripling<00:21:15.357> the<00:21:15.437> size<00:21:15.774> of<00:21:15.838> his<00:21:15.934> sales<00:21:16.319> force.
00:21:17.362 --> 00:21:23.234
When<00:21:17.458> you<00:21:17.603> have<00:21:17.779> to<00:21:17.859> go<00:21:18.084> through<00:21:18.261> that<00:21:18.902> fast<00:21:19.319> of<00:21:19.448> a<00:21:19.528> hiring<00:21:19.929> process,<00:21:20.426> that<00:21:20.603> fast<00:21:20.908> of<00:21:20.988> a<00:21:21.052> training<00:21:21.453> process,<00:21:21.951> and<00:21:22.015> you're<00:21:22.095> growing<00:21:22.336> the<00:21:22.416> company<00:21:22.689> that<00:21:22.833> quickly.
00:21:23.314 --> 00:21:26.298
And<00:21:23.796> by<00:21:23.876> the<00:21:24.020> way,<00:21:24.132> if<00:21:24.261> you're<00:21:24.357> growing<00:21:24.678> in<00:21:24.742> that<00:21:24.903> area,<00:21:25.143> you're<00:21:25.239> growing<00:21:25.496> in<00:21:25.560> many<00:21:25.801> other<00:21:26.042> areas.
00:21:26.346 --> 00:21:31.336
To<00:21:26.379> your<00:21:26.523> previous<00:21:26.908> question<00:21:27.245> around<00:21:27.469> how<00:21:27.502> to<00:21:27.630> triage<00:21:27.951> your<00:21:28.031> time,<00:21:28.753> I'm<00:21:28.833> sure<00:21:29.010> he,<00:21:29.314> he<00:21:29.411> was<00:21:29.555> being<00:21:29.716> pulled<00:21:29.892> in<00:21:29.956> a<00:21:29.972> million<00:21:30.277> different<00:21:30.454> directions<00:21:30.871> every<00:21:31.079> day.
00:21:31.881 --> 00:21:44.219
So<00:21:32.764> it<00:21:32.876> is<00:21:33.085> very<00:21:33.325> challenging<00:21:34.609> as<00:21:34.705> you<00:21:34.785> start<00:21:35.026> to<00:21:35.170> scale<00:21:36.149> to<00:21:37.031> have<00:21:37.336> an<00:21:37.432> entirely<00:21:38.058> remote<00:21:38.379> workforce<00:21:39.422> because<00:21:41.026> you<00:21:41.187> don't<00:21:41.363> get<00:21:41.588> the<00:21:41.668> opportunity<00:21:42.165> to<00:21:42.246> have<00:21:42.470> as<00:21:42.566> many<00:21:42.807> touchpoints<00:21:43.369> with<00:21:43.529> your<00:21:43.673> team<00:21:43.914> members.
00:21:44.797 --> 00:21:56.309
As<00:21:44.957> you<00:21:45.118> do<00:21:45.696> when<00:21:45.856> you're<00:21:46.017> a<00:21:46.033> small<00:21:46.418> team<00:21:47.061> and<00:21:47.302> you<00:21:47.446> may<00:21:47.558> not<00:21:47.783> be<00:21:47.944> able<00:21:48.104> to<00:21:48.249> develop<00:21:48.682> the<00:21:48.827> relationship<00:21:49.469> and<00:21:49.614> trust<00:21:50.593> in<00:21:50.738> those<00:21:50.978> team<00:21:51.139> members<00:21:51.540> to<00:21:51.653> know<00:21:51.958> that,<00:21:52.825> hey,<00:21:53.002> maybe<00:21:53.242> their<00:21:53.965> best<00:21:54.206> working<00:21:54.511> hours<00:21:54.784> are<00:21:54.928> from<00:21:55.233> 10:00<00:21:55.539> PM<00:21:55.651> to<00:21:55.731> 6:00<00:21:56.261> AM.
00:21:56.518 --> 00:21:57.353
That's<00:21:56.679> just<00:21:56.791> how<00:21:56.935> they<00:21:57.080> work.
00:21:57.417 --> 00:21:59.665
But<00:21:57.497> I<00:21:57.578> trust<00:21:57.819> them<00:21:57.963> to<00:21:57.995> do<00:21:58.140> it<00:21:58.220> even<00:21:58.397> if<00:21:58.525> I<00:21:58.541> don't<00:21:58.718> see<00:21:58.878> them<00:21:59.344> doing<00:21:59.585> it.
00:22:00.693 --> 00:22:04.450
So<00:22:00.853> I<00:22:00.950> can<00:22:01.046> see<00:22:01.255> that<00:22:01.351> challenge<00:22:01.752> as<00:22:01.897> you,<00:22:02.090> as<00:22:02.170> you<00:22:02.298> grow<00:22:03.679> a<00:22:03.760> company<00:22:04.065> size.
00:22:05.269 --> 00:22:09.909
We<00:22:05.365> haven't<00:22:05.638> scaled<00:22:06.007> that<00:22:06.168> size<00:22:06.569> yet,<00:22:06.794> so<00:22:06.971> we've<00:22:07.196> been<00:22:07.292> able<00:22:07.469> to<00:22:07.597> work<00:22:07.758> very<00:22:07.934> productively<00:22:08.978> from<00:22:09.139> a<00:22:09.203> remote<00:22:09.460> environment.
00:22:10.429 --> 00:22:11.757
Our<00:22:10.753> culture<00:22:11.093> is<00:22:11.174> fantastic.
00:22:11.822 --> 00:22:12.890
I<00:22:11.887> love<00:22:12.049> the<00:22:12.130> people<00:22:12.372> I<00:22:12.470> work<00:22:12.712> with.
00:22:12.939 --> 00:22:18.428
We<00:22:13.036> share<00:22:13.522> a<00:22:13.684> deep<00:22:14.331> passion<00:22:14.801> for<00:22:14.979> the<00:22:15.368> mission<00:22:15.691> that<00:22:15.789> we<00:22:15.869> have<00:22:16.129> as<00:22:16.209> a<00:22:16.274> company<00:22:16.760> to<00:22:16.906> democratize<00:22:17.553> access<00:22:17.812> to<00:22:17.909> legal<00:22:18.136> services.
00:22:19.310 --> 00:22:22.048
But<00:22:19.733> as<00:22:19.896> we<00:22:19.978> scale,<00:22:20.401> it's<00:22:20.630> certainly<00:22:20.890> something<00:22:21.200> that<00:22:21.282> will<00:22:21.363> be<00:22:21.461> top<00:22:21.705> of<00:22:21.771> mind.
00:22:22.830 --> 00:22:23.009
Yeah.
00:22:23.091 --> 00:22:23.270
Yeah.
00:22:23.335 --> 00:22:24.688
That,<00:22:23.563> that,<00:22:23.824> that's<00:22:23.987> super<00:22:24.313> interesting.
00:22:26.211 --> 00:22:29.290
Who's<00:22:26.540> a<00:22:26.639> leader<00:22:27.199> or<00:22:27.297> an<00:22:27.396> example<00:22:27.939> of<00:22:28.055> a<00:22:28.121> leader<00:22:28.697> that<00:22:28.845> you<00:22:28.960> admire?
00:22:31.542 --> 00:22:32.606
Oh,<00:22:31.575> that's<00:22:31.808> a<00:22:31.825> very<00:22:32.041> good<00:22:32.207> question.
00:22:34.870 --> 00:22:35.056
Hmm.
00:22:38.808 --> 00:22:59.656
You<00:22:38.889> know,<00:22:39.068> I<00:22:39.133> will<00:22:39.246> mention,<00:22:40.593> um,<00:22:43.026> I<00:22:43.043> try<00:22:43.351> to<00:22:43.448> look<00:22:43.692> to<00:22:44.746> people<00:22:45.135> who<00:22:45.233> are<00:22:45.476> both<00:22:45.882> within<00:22:47.405> my<00:22:47.664> industry<00:22:49.186> and<00:22:49.348> outside<00:22:49.672> of<00:22:49.753> my<00:22:49.915> industry,<00:22:50.968> uh,<00:22:51.470> to,<00:22:52.198> to<00:22:54.141> gain<00:22:54.384> learnings<00:22:55.129> from,<00:22:55.743> to,<00:22:56.067> um,<00:22:56.632> give<00:22:56.794> me<00:22:58.411> a<00:22:58.443> model<00:22:58.831> to<00:22:58.928> strive<00:22:59.300> for.
00:23:00.351 --> 00:23:19.870
And<00:23:00.852> one<00:23:01.014> of<00:23:01.079> the<00:23:01.160> challenges<00:23:01.968> in<00:23:02.065> answering<00:23:02.388> this<00:23:02.615> question,<00:23:03.278> I<00:23:03.358> think,<00:23:03.989> uh,<00:23:04.571> I<00:23:04.638> often<00:23:04.934> find<00:23:05.857> is<00:23:06.275> that<00:23:08.990> as<00:23:09.086> you're<00:23:09.247> working<00:23:09.809> with<00:23:10.034> people<00:23:10.516> who,<00:23:10.612> you<00:23:11.191> know,<00:23:11.560> are<00:23:12.861> trying<00:23:13.247> to<00:23:14.854> be<00:23:14.950> helpful<00:23:15.352> in<00:23:15.432> any<00:23:15.578> way<00:23:15.755> they<00:23:15.900> can<00:23:16.143> to<00:23:16.175> your<00:23:16.320> business,<00:23:16.788> they'll<00:23:17.192> often<00:23:17.434> say,<00:23:18.402> let<00:23:18.499> me<00:23:18.596> introduce<00:23:19.047> you<00:23:19.144> to<00:23:19.225> so-and-so.
00:23:20.258 --> 00:23:22.033
They're<00:23:20.387> going<00:23:20.500> to<00:23:20.580> be<00:23:20.661> a<00:23:20.677> perfect<00:23:21.000> person<00:23:21.307> for<00:23:21.404> you<00:23:21.436> to<00:23:21.549> talk<00:23:21.823> to.
00:23:22.598 --> 00:23:31.321
And<00:23:23.017> maybe<00:23:23.340> this<00:23:23.663> is<00:23:24.373> somebody<00:23:24.712> who,<00:23:25.114> you<00:23:25.194> know,<00:23:25.355> they're<00:23:25.677> multimillionaire,<00:23:26.706> they've<00:23:27.027> built<00:23:27.285> and<00:23:27.429> exited<00:23:27.832> multiple<00:23:28.169> companies<00:23:28.893> and<00:23:29.038> they're<00:23:29.279> even<00:23:29.456> in<00:23:29.520> their<00:23:29.600> retirement<00:23:30.099> age<00:23:30.662> and<00:23:30.726> that's<00:23:30.903> fantastic.
00:23:31.386 --> 00:23:32.447
And<00:23:31.466> I<00:23:31.530> love<00:23:31.627> talking<00:23:31.932> to<00:23:32.013> those<00:23:32.174> people.

00:23:37.596 --> 00:23:44.104
But<00:23:37.756> honestly,<00:23:38.157> it's<00:23:38.333> not<00:23:38.654> the<00:23:39.680> most<00:23:40.561> relevant<00:23:41.219> information<00:23:42.164> for<00:23:42.341> an<00:23:42.501> early<00:23:42.806> stage<00:23:43.703> founder.
00:23:44.184 --> 00:23:50.035
The<00:23:44.345> best<00:23:44.665> person<00:23:45.146> that<00:23:45.290> I<00:23:45.370> can<00:23:45.483> talk<00:23:45.803> to<00:23:45.964> is<00:23:46.044> somebody<00:23:46.493> who<00:23:47.454> was<00:23:47.631> exactly<00:23:48.176> where<00:23:48.336> I<00:23:48.512> am<00:23:48.657> right<00:23:48.833> now<00:23:49.458> one<00:23:49.634> year<00:23:49.795> ago.

And<00:24:05.248> he<00:24:05.408> gives<00:24:05.568> me<00:24:05.665> unbelievable<00:24:06.146> insight<00:24:06.691> into<00:24:07.572> how<00:24:07.668> to<00:24:07.813> think<00:24:08.005> about<00:24:08.310> fundraising,<00:24:09.015> how<00:24:09.127> to<00:24:09.207> think<00:24:09.320> think<00:24:09.384> about<00:24:09.512> operations,<00:24:10.218> how<00:24:10.250> to<00:24:10.330> think<00:24:10.475> about<00:24:10.699> scaling<00:24:11.357> and<00:24:11.437> building<00:24:11.678> out<00:24:11.822> distribution<00:24:12.319> channels,<00:24:13.186> building<00:24:13.507> out<00:24:13.603> defensible<00:24:14.084> moats<00:24:14.341> around<00:24:14.581> our<00:24:14.710> technology,<00:24:15.769> how<00:24:15.913> to<00:24:16.009> work<00:24:16.170> with<00:24:16.330> engineers.
00:24:17.309 --> 00:24:29.661
So,<00:24:17.918> you<00:24:17.950> know,<00:24:18.159> while<00:24:18.576> I<00:24:18.720> think<00:24:18.961> the,<00:24:20.116> the<00:24:20.244> common<00:24:20.581> answer<00:24:20.886> for<00:24:20.966> a<00:24:21.046> question<00:24:21.383> like<00:24:21.560> this<00:24:21.800> is,<00:24:22.089> oh,<00:24:23.084> Steve<00:24:23.389> Jobs<00:24:23.806> or<00:24:23.886> Elon<00:24:24.191> Musk,<00:24:24.592> really<00:24:24.816> for<00:24:24.961> me,<00:24:25.217> it's<00:24:25.394> the<00:24:26.100> early<00:24:26.340> stage<00:24:26.677> tech<00:24:26.902> founders<00:24:27.479> that<00:24:27.945> I<00:24:28.025> get<00:24:28.185> to<00:24:28.522> work<00:24:28.747> with<00:24:28.923> and<00:24:28.987> interact<00:24:29.469> with.
00:24:29.709 --> 00:24:34.506
Maybe<00:24:29.870> we<00:24:29.950> share<00:24:30.174> a<00:24:30.191> common<00:24:30.447> investor,<00:24:31.570> maybe<00:24:31.875> we've<00:24:32.051> come<00:24:32.276> through<00:24:33.479> similar<00:24:33.977> backgrounds.
00:24:34.843 --> 00:24:37.681
That,<00:24:35.003> that's<00:24:35.244> who<00:24:35.356> is<00:24:35.581> the<00:24:36.145> most<00:24:36.403> influential<00:24:36.953> from<00:24:37.083> my<00:24:37.115> perspective.
00:24:38.312 --> 00:24:39.784
How<00:24:38.345> much<00:24:38.571> money<00:24:38.717> have<00:24:38.911> you<00:24:39.040> raised<00:24:39.186> at<00:24:39.299> this<00:24:39.526> point?
00:24:39.946 --> 00:24:42.179
And<00:24:40.173> how<00:24:40.351> do<00:24:40.496> you,<00:24:40.852> uh,<00:24:41.143> to<00:24:41.321> this<00:24:41.483> point,<00:24:41.823> sorry.
00:24:42.437 --> 00:24:45.710
And<00:24:42.534> how<00:24:42.842> do<00:24:43.084> you,<00:24:44.298> um,<00:24:44.880> think<00:24:45.010> about<00:24:45.290> fundraising?
00:24:49.001 --> 00:24:50.744
It's<00:24:49.146> an<00:24:49.211> interesting<00:24:49.614> space<00:24:49.953> that<00:24:50.098> we're<00:24:50.260> in<00:24:50.356> right<00:24:50.534> now.
00:24:51.567 --> 00:24:56.925
Legal<00:24:51.809> technology<00:24:53.003> is<00:24:53.487> perhaps<00:24:54.230> one<00:24:54.391> of<00:24:54.472> the<00:24:54.633> hottest<00:24:54.972> segments<00:24:55.682> in<00:24:55.828> venture<00:24:56.086> capital<00:24:56.570> right<00:24:56.731> now.
00:24:57.538 --> 00:25:04.328
There<00:24:57.700> has<00:24:57.910> been<00:24:58.251> this<00:24:59.307> wave<00:25:00.038> of<00:25:00.152> excitement<00:25:01.095> around<00:25:01.501> the<00:25:01.663> applications<00:25:02.297> for<00:25:02.411> generative<00:25:03.126> AI<00:25:03.630> in<00:25:03.695> the<00:25:03.792> legal<00:25:04.020> profession.
00:25:04.967 --> 00:25:10.120
And<00:25:05.063> there<00:25:05.224> is<00:25:05.368> a<00:25:05.529> common<00:25:06.171> consensus<00:25:06.829> that<00:25:08.098> the<00:25:08.194> entire<00:25:08.611> legal<00:25:08.836> profession<00:25:09.237> is<00:25:09.334> about<00:25:09.559> to<00:25:09.703> change.
00:25:10.682 --> 00:25:21.086
But<00:25:11.164> what's<00:25:11.405> interesting<00:25:11.886> is<00:25:12.047> that<00:25:13.396> almost<00:25:13.877> all<00:25:14.054> of<00:25:14.134> that<00:25:14.359> funding<00:25:14.856> has<00:25:15.033> gone<00:25:15.338> towards<00:25:16.205> enterprise<00:25:16.783> legal<00:25:17.024> technology,<00:25:18.067> meaning<00:25:18.388> software<00:25:18.870> that<00:25:18.966> is<00:25:19.111> built<00:25:19.352> for<00:25:19.577> lawyers<00:25:20.074> inside<00:25:20.556> law<00:25:20.716> firms.
00:25:22.065 --> 00:25:33.769
That's<00:25:22.242> a<00:25:22.306> wonderful<00:25:22.643> thing<00:25:22.964> because<00:25:23.285> it<00:25:23.430> promises<00:25:24.891> to<00:25:25.292> make<00:25:25.533> lawyers<00:25:25.918> more<00:25:26.030> efficient,<00:25:26.978> to<00:25:27.138> help<00:25:27.379> them<00:25:28.005> see<00:25:28.326> more<00:25:28.503> clients,<00:25:29.209> to<00:25:29.611> deal<00:25:29.803> with<00:25:29.964> more<00:25:30.172> cases,<00:25:30.831> and<00:25:30.975> ultimately,<00:25:31.457> hopefully,<00:25:31.794> to<00:25:31.955> pass<00:25:32.115> some<00:25:32.276> of<00:25:32.340> those<00:25:32.500> cost<00:25:32.629> savings<00:25:33.062> on<00:25:33.159> to<00:25:33.239> consumers.
00:25:34.443 --> 00:25:41.310
The<00:25:34.587> challenge<00:25:34.988> is<00:25:35.566> because<00:25:35.887> this<00:25:35.983> technology<00:25:36.513> is<00:25:36.625> very<00:25:36.914> new,<00:25:37.716> it<00:25:37.957> is<00:25:38.871> so<00:25:39.176> far<00:25:39.561> only<00:25:39.802> accessible<00:25:40.284> to<00:25:40.380> the<00:25:40.460> largest<00:25:40.845> law<00:25:41.022> firms.
00:25:41.824 --> 00:25:50.409
So<00:25:42.466> rather<00:25:42.851> than<00:25:43.027> increasing<00:25:43.733> access<00:25:44.022> to<00:25:44.215> justice<00:25:44.616> for<00:25:44.712> people<00:25:45.049> at<00:25:45.178> the<00:25:45.274> lower<00:25:45.595> end<00:25:45.771> of<00:25:45.835> the<00:25:45.980> economic<00:25:46.333> spectrum,<00:25:47.440> it<00:25:47.536> is<00:25:47.841> unfortunately<00:25:48.323> so<00:25:48.563> far<00:25:48.964> somewhat<00:25:49.350> having<00:25:49.590> the<00:25:49.671> opposite<00:25:50.007> effect.
00:25:50.970 --> 00:26:00.774
By<00:25:51.516> only<00:25:51.692> the<00:25:51.853> large<00:25:52.174> firms<00:25:52.639> having<00:25:52.976> had<00:25:53.201> access<00:25:53.602> to<00:25:53.778> legal<00:25:54.019> technology,<00:25:54.805> the<00:25:54.902> small<00:25:55.222> firms<00:25:56.811> end<00:25:56.971> up<00:25:57.164> falling<00:25:57.613> further<00:25:57.950> and<00:25:58.095> further<00:25:58.432> behind<00:25:59.154> what<00:25:59.298> those<00:25:59.539> large<00:25:59.780> law<00:25:59.876> firms<00:26:00.197> are<00:26:00.277> able<00:26:00.518> to<00:26:00.662> do.
00:26:01.384 --> 00:26:15.443
So<00:26:01.914> So<00:26:02.042> to<00:26:02.362> get<00:26:02.523> this<00:26:02.683> back<00:26:02.779> to<00:26:02.907> your<00:26:03.084> question<00:26:03.404> around<00:26:03.565> how<00:26:03.629> I<00:26:03.805> think<00:26:03.965> about<00:26:04.142> fundraising,<00:26:05.312> we<00:26:05.873> very<00:26:06.113> intentionally<00:26:06.931> pursued<00:26:07.476> building<00:26:07.893> technology<00:26:08.518> in<00:26:08.550> a<00:26:08.614> field<00:26:09.095> that<00:26:09.720> has<00:26:09.896> been<00:26:10.297> largely<00:26:12.205> unaddressed<00:26:12.782> by<00:26:12.926> the<00:26:13.022> venture<00:26:13.263> community<00:26:13.744> and<00:26:13.808> even<00:26:13.984> by<00:26:14.609> other<00:26:14.850> tech<00:26:15.042> founders.
00:26:15.571 --> 00:26:17.687
We<00:26:15.651> are<00:26:15.747> building<00:26:16.389> consumer<00:26:16.869> legal<00:26:17.110> technology.
00:26:17.735 --> 00:26:22.207
So<00:26:17.847> this<00:26:18.008> is<00:26:18.088> technology<00:26:18.569> that's<00:26:18.729> accessible<00:26:19.194> for<00:26:19.354> consumers,<00:26:20.316> for<00:26:20.396> small<00:26:20.636> businesses,<00:26:21.198> and<00:26:21.358> everybody<00:26:21.759> in<00:26:21.839> between.
00:26:22.576 --> 00:26:28.635
It's<00:26:22.720> not<00:26:22.897> for<00:26:23.041> big<00:26:23.265> law,<00:26:23.458> it's<00:26:23.698> not<00:26:23.987> corporations<00:26:24.564> who<00:26:24.644> are<00:26:24.724> doing<00:26:24.884> large<00:26:25.141> M&A<00:26:25.445> transactions<00:26:26.327> and<00:26:27.273> bankruptcy<00:26:27.690> deals<00:26:27.994> and<00:26:28.074> things<00:26:28.235> like<00:26:28.395> that.
00:26:28.956 --> 00:26:30.030
We're<00:26:29.357> here<00:26:29.533> for<00:26:29.677> the<00:26:29.757> little<00:26:29.933> guy.
00:26:31.039 --> 00:26:45.894
And<00:26:31.215> I<00:26:31.295> think<00:26:31.520> what's<00:26:31.712> interesting<00:26:32.177> is<00:26:32.257> that<00:26:32.401> even<00:26:32.658> though<00:26:33.523> for<00:26:33.683> every<00:26:33.923> $1<00:26:34.484> that<00:26:34.580> is<00:26:34.645> spent<00:26:35.045> on<00:26:35.141> corporate<00:26:35.462> transactional<00:26:36.087> legal<00:26:36.279> services,<00:26:36.808> $2<00:26:37.048> are<00:26:37.545> spent<00:26:38.010> on<00:26:38.266> legal<00:26:38.490> services<00:26:38.987> by<00:26:39.147> consumers<00:26:39.628> and<00:26:39.708> SMBs,<00:26:40.205> small<00:26:40.445> and<00:26:40.493> medium-sized<00:26:40.830> businesses,<00:26:42.416> it<00:26:42.497> is<00:26:42.593> not<00:26:42.833> an<00:26:42.929> area<00:26:43.154> that<00:26:43.298> has<00:26:43.714> had<00:26:44.019> much<00:26:44.195> attention<00:26:44.516> paid<00:26:44.756> to<00:26:44.916> it<00:26:44.996> by<00:26:45.092> the<00:26:45.221> venture<00:26:45.477> community.
00:26:45.958 --> 00:26:51.294
So<00:26:46.919> when<00:26:47.400> I<00:26:47.480> think<00:26:47.640> about<00:26:47.865> fundraising,<00:26:48.682> it<00:26:48.842> really<00:26:49.163> is<00:26:50.124> an<00:26:50.268> educational<00:26:50.845> process.
00:26:51.486 --> 00:26:54.899
We<00:26:51.566> have<00:26:51.791> to<00:26:52.047> communicate<00:26:52.688> to<00:26:52.912> investors,<00:26:53.970> this<00:26:54.146> is<00:26:54.290> what<00:26:54.435> we're<00:26:54.531> building.
00:26:55.333 --> 00:26:56.457
This<00:26:55.509> is<00:26:55.654> why<00:26:55.879> we're<00:26:55.975> building<00:26:56.360> it.
00:26:56.617 --> 00:26:57.870
This<00:26:56.794> is<00:26:56.922> the<00:26:57.019> problem<00:26:57.260> that<00:26:57.404> we're<00:26:57.484> solving.
00:26:58.143 --> 00:27:01.450
And<00:26:58.287> here's<00:26:58.689> how<00:26:58.865> we<00:26:58.945> are<00:26:59.090> innovating<00:26:59.507> on<00:26:59.572> the<00:26:59.652> technology<00:27:00.166> side<00:27:00.535> to<00:27:00.615> solve<00:27:00.872> this<00:27:01.033> problem.
00:27:02.060 --> 00:27:04.838
So<00:27:02.799> I've—<00:27:03.120> there<00:27:03.200> are<00:27:03.281> a<00:27:03.345> few<00:27:03.586> other<00:27:03.762> companies<00:27:04.164> who<00:27:04.244> are<00:27:04.389> in<00:27:04.469> this<00:27:04.549> space.
00:27:05.288 --> 00:27:06.235
Not<00:27:05.529> many,<00:27:05.850> not<00:27:06.010> enough.
00:27:06.315 --> 00:27:09.479
There<00:27:06.412> need<00:27:06.556> to<00:27:06.588> be<00:27:06.717> far,<00:27:07.231> far<00:27:07.536> more<00:27:07.777> companies<00:27:08.499> innovating<00:27:08.901> in<00:27:08.981> this<00:27:09.061> space.
00:27:09.944 --> 00:27:16.078
But<00:27:10.249> we<00:27:10.651> often<00:27:10.908> commiserate<00:27:11.614> on<00:27:11.935> how<00:27:12.112> much<00:27:12.289> of<00:27:12.369> our<00:27:12.513> time<00:27:12.818> is<00:27:12.851> spent<00:27:13.220> on<00:27:13.316> just<00:27:13.477> trying<00:27:13.862> to<00:27:14.665> help<00:27:14.761> people<00:27:15.082> understand<00:27:15.564> what<00:27:15.725> we're<00:27:15.885> doing.
00:27:16.126 --> 00:27:27.063
Because<00:27:16.431> I<00:27:16.447> think<00:27:16.688> another<00:27:16.929> thing<00:27:17.250> that,<00:27:18.695> that<00:27:18.856> I<00:27:18.872> see<00:27:19.562> is<00:27:21.489> And<00:27:21.570> I'd<00:27:21.666> be<00:27:21.762> interested<00:27:22.067> to<00:27:22.132> see<00:27:22.694> if<00:27:23.031> folks<00:27:23.401> who<00:27:23.513> are<00:27:23.818> trying<00:27:24.011> to<00:27:24.155> build<00:27:24.557> like<00:27:25.103> medtech<00:27:25.697> and<00:27:25.826> other<00:27:25.986> fields<00:27:26.163> like<00:27:26.308> that<00:27:26.420> see<00:27:26.629> the<00:27:26.661> same<00:27:26.966> thing.
00:27:27.191 --> 00:27:35.768
But<00:27:27.689> in<00:27:27.769> legal<00:27:28.010> tech,<00:27:29.054> there<00:27:29.215> are<00:27:29.375> very<00:27:29.680> few<00:27:30.178> lawyers<00:27:30.644> who<00:27:30.724> have<00:27:30.821> gone<00:27:31.126> on<00:27:31.383> to<00:27:31.704> be<00:27:31.865> involved<00:27:32.202> in<00:27:32.266> the<00:27:32.347> venture<00:27:32.652> capital<00:27:33.069> industry,<00:27:33.616> either<00:27:33.872> as<00:27:34.017> an<00:27:34.097> investor<00:27:34.740> or<00:27:34.916> as<00:27:35.013> an<00:27:35.222> operator.
00:27:36.266 --> 00:27:39.622
And<00:27:36.764> those<00:27:37.069> worlds<00:27:37.406> are<00:27:37.551> often<00:27:37.952> very,<00:27:38.289> very<00:27:38.530> siloed<00:27:39.028> from<00:27:39.237> one<00:27:39.398> another.
00:27:39.719 --> 00:27:49.227
The<00:27:39.815> only<00:27:40.040> touchpoints<00:27:40.538> they<00:27:40.682> have<00:27:41.020> are<00:27:41.261> when<00:27:42.048> a<00:27:42.080> venture<00:27:42.449> fund<00:27:42.706> hires<00:27:43.027> a<00:27:43.043> lawyer<00:27:43.429> to<00:27:43.814> do<00:27:43.911> some<00:27:44.087> of<00:27:44.152> their<00:27:44.312> work,<00:27:44.778> or<00:27:45.099> a<00:27:45.115> startup,<00:27:45.742> you<00:27:45.774> know,<00:27:46.079> raises<00:27:46.336> some<00:27:46.465> money<00:27:46.722> and<00:27:46.802> needs<00:27:47.107> a<00:27:47.364> lawyer<00:27:47.669> to<00:27:47.749> draw<00:27:47.910> up<00:27:48.151> the<00:27:48.263> documentation<00:27:48.954> for<00:27:49.131> it.
00:27:49.596 --> 00:28:00.051
But<00:27:49.708> in<00:27:49.772> terms<00:27:50.109> of<00:27:50.318> a,<00:27:51.135> an<00:27:51.296> open<00:27:51.536> pathway<00:27:51.937> of<00:27:52.082> communication<00:27:52.675> that<00:27:52.803> actually<00:27:54.182> bridges<00:27:54.824> the<00:27:56.106> dialogue<00:27:56.732> gap<00:27:57.068> between<00:27:57.485> these<00:27:57.646> two<00:27:57.806> spaces,<00:27:58.592> it<00:27:58.736> is<00:27:59.153> very<00:27:59.474> infrequent.
00:28:00.099 --> 00:28:11.147
So<00:28:00.981> I<00:28:01.863> very<00:28:02.103> much<00:28:02.280> enjoy<00:28:02.665> talking<00:28:03.082> to<00:28:03.964> other<00:28:04.140> lawyers<00:28:04.605> who<00:28:04.685> have<00:28:04.845> gone<00:28:05.086> the<00:28:05.166> route<00:28:05.423> of<00:28:05.487> venture<00:28:05.727> capital,<00:28:06.449> again,<00:28:06.689> either<00:28:06.866> as<00:28:06.994> an<00:28:07.074> entrepreneur<00:28:07.491> or<00:28:07.732> as<00:28:07.812> an<00:28:07.892> investor,<00:28:08.854> because<00:28:09.271> again,<00:28:09.560> we<00:28:09.656> can<00:28:09.961> kind<00:28:10.121> of<00:28:10.201> commiserate<00:28:10.618> on<00:28:10.698> many<00:28:10.923> things.
00:28:11.965 --> 00:28:16.679
What<00:28:12.045> are<00:28:12.125> your<00:28:12.302> thoughts<00:28:12.542> on<00:28:12.622> the<00:28:12.783> current<00:28:13.184> macroeconomic<00:28:14.322> environment<00:28:15.252> and<00:28:15.493> really<00:28:15.749> just<00:28:15.910> the<00:28:15.990> state<00:28:16.230> of<00:28:16.294> the<00:28:16.455> world?
00:28:16.760 --> 00:28:20.573
Because<00:28:18.490> as<00:28:18.618> a<00:28:18.650> CEO,<00:28:19.099> you<00:28:19.131> now<00:28:19.259> have<00:28:19.372> to<00:28:19.500> think<00:28:19.676> about<00:28:19.916> that<00:28:20.077> stuff,<00:28:20.397> right?
00:28:20.621 --> 00:28:25.701
Whereas<00:28:20.878> previously,<00:28:21.375> maybe<00:28:21.823> 20<00:28:22.064> years<00:28:22.304> ago,<00:28:22.496> a<00:28:22.560> CEO<00:28:23.025> wouldn't<00:28:23.426> have<00:28:23.522> to<00:28:23.666> think<00:28:23.778> about<00:28:24.003> that<00:28:24.163> stuff<00:28:24.500> and<00:28:24.644> could<00:28:24.868> focus<00:28:25.189> on<00:28:25.269> their<00:28:25.365> business.
00:28:25.830 --> 00:28:33.457
But<00:28:26.487> it<00:28:26.567> seems<00:28:26.791> like<00:28:26.903> CEOs<00:28:27.288> are<00:28:27.368> being<00:28:27.592> called<00:28:27.913> to<00:28:28.169> think<00:28:28.345> about<00:28:28.634> that<00:28:28.746> stuff<00:28:29.211> and<00:28:29.355> have<00:28:29.595> a<00:28:29.772> take<00:28:30.236> on<00:28:30.397> that<00:28:30.573> kind<00:28:30.749> of<00:28:30.813> stuff,<00:28:31.919> um,<00:28:32.736> in<00:28:32.897> today's<00:28:33.281> world.
00:28:34.675 --> 00:28:36.630
It<00:28:34.755> is<00:28:34.836> a<00:28:34.900> very<00:28:35.140> broad<00:28:35.460> and<00:28:35.541> a<00:28:35.605> very<00:28:35.765> important<00:28:36.182> question.
00:28:37.047 --> 00:28:46.936
And<00:28:37.688> I<00:28:37.784> think<00:28:38.040> the<00:28:38.970> question<00:28:39.451> that<00:28:39.547> you<00:28:39.691> have<00:28:39.803> to<00:28:39.931> ask<00:28:40.172> yourself<00:28:40.973> as<00:28:41.470> an<00:28:41.614> operator<00:28:42.015> of<00:28:42.047> a<00:28:42.111> company<00:28:43.553> and<00:28:43.634> as<00:28:43.714> an<00:28:43.778> entrepreneur<00:28:44.195> and<00:28:44.339> a<00:28:44.355> founder<00:28:45.541> is<00:28:45.798> where<00:28:46.038> can<00:28:46.182> I<00:28:46.278> have<00:28:46.519> an<00:28:46.599> impact?
00:28:47.000 --> 00:28:49.132
Where<00:28:47.144> can<00:28:47.256> I<00:28:47.288> have<00:28:47.401> a<00:28:47.481> positive<00:28:47.817> impact<00:28:48.266> with<00:28:48.362> the<00:28:48.443> work<00:28:48.619> that<00:28:48.763> I'm<00:28:48.859> doing?
00:28:49.324 --> 00:29:08.705
And<00:28:50.046> I<00:28:50.110> think<00:28:50.366> both<00:28:50.751> with<00:28:51.472> the<00:28:51.552> work<00:28:51.793> that<00:28:51.953> we've<00:28:52.194> done<00:28:52.370> at<00:28:52.434> CreditVerso<00:28:53.091> and<00:28:53.155> the<00:28:53.252> work<00:28:53.412> that<00:28:53.492> we're<00:28:53.588> now<00:28:53.813> doing<00:28:53.989> at<00:28:54.053> My<00:28:54.213> Pocket<00:28:54.534> Lawyer,<00:28:54.855> we've<00:28:55.079> been<00:28:55.239> given<00:28:56.281> a<00:28:57.083> really<00:28:57.259> fortunate<00:28:57.724> opportunity<00:28:58.926> to<00:29:00.064> both<00:29:00.465> build<00:29:01.411> a<00:29:01.571> big<00:29:01.844> and<00:29:01.972> profitable<00:29:02.549> and<00:29:02.629> enduring<00:29:03.030> business,<00:29:03.431> but<00:29:03.527> at<00:29:03.591> the<00:29:03.687> same<00:29:03.992> time<00:29:05.258> have<00:29:05.451> a<00:29:05.515> very<00:29:05.755> positive<00:29:06.156> impact<00:29:06.941> on<00:29:07.102> a<00:29:07.182> portion<00:29:07.438> of<00:29:07.518> the<00:29:07.599> community<00:29:07.935> that<00:29:08.079> really<00:29:08.240> needs<00:29:08.464> our<00:29:08.560> help.
00:29:08.817 --> 00:29:12.985
So<00:29:08.897> I'll<00:29:09.939> share<00:29:10.228> with<00:29:10.388> you<00:29:10.468> a<00:29:10.548> term<00:29:10.805> that,<00:29:11.350> um,<00:29:11.991> I<00:29:12.071> wasn't<00:29:12.311> always<00:29:12.488> familiar<00:29:12.889> with.
00:29:13.065 --> 00:29:14.219
It's<00:29:13.209> called<00:29:13.450> access<00:29:13.754> to<00:29:13.850> justice.
00:29:14.796 --> 00:29:32.499
And<00:29:15.357> access<00:29:16.078> to<00:29:16.174> justice<00:29:16.494> describes<00:29:17.215> a<00:29:17.840> movement<00:29:18.192> or<00:29:18.256> an<00:29:18.336> idea<00:29:18.753> that<00:29:19.939> rests<00:29:20.323> on<00:29:20.419> the<00:29:21.044> observation<00:29:21.605> that<00:29:21.717> everybody<00:29:22.085> should<00:29:22.246> have<00:29:22.422> equal<00:29:22.742> access<00:29:23.607> to<00:29:24.168> the<00:29:24.248> rights<00:29:24.504> afforded<00:29:24.889> to<00:29:24.969> them<00:29:25.289> by<00:29:26.171> our<00:29:26.827> laws<00:29:27.148> and<00:29:27.196> our<00:29:27.228> Constitution,<00:29:28.654> regardless<00:29:29.214> of<00:29:29.327> their<00:29:29.471> socioeconomic<00:29:30.272> standing,<00:29:30.817> their<00:29:30.977> race,<00:29:31.297> gender,<00:29:31.553> ethnicity,<00:29:32.018> et<00:29:32.050> cetera.
00:29:33.957 --> 00:29:39.500
It's<00:29:35.639> an<00:29:35.783> idea<00:29:36.119> that<00:29:38.026> I<00:29:38.058> think<00:29:38.282> is<00:29:38.314> something<00:29:38.603> we<00:29:38.683> can<00:29:38.843> all<00:29:38.923> strive<00:29:39.243> for.
00:29:39.564 --> 00:29:44.306
But<00:29:40.028> as<00:29:40.269> we<00:29:40.349> were<00:29:40.429> mentioning<00:29:40.829> with<00:29:40.990> those<00:29:41.086> statistics<00:29:41.566> at<00:29:41.646> the<00:29:41.727> beginning<00:29:42.031> of<00:29:42.063> the<00:29:42.191> call,<00:29:42.448> it's<00:29:42.608> very<00:29:42.784> much<00:29:43.008> not<00:29:43.168> the<00:29:43.249> reality<00:29:43.809> that<00:29:43.889> we<00:29:44.034> live<00:29:44.210> in.
00:29:44.851 --> 00:29:48.505
Most<00:29:45.075> people<00:29:45.732> don't<00:29:45.956> ever<00:29:46.117> have<00:29:46.277> access<00:29:46.678> to<00:29:46.854> the<00:29:46.998> civil<00:29:47.255> rights<00:29:47.639> that<00:29:48.072> they<00:29:48.217> need.
00:29:49.804 --> 00:29:56.745
It's,<00:29:50.781> if<00:29:50.926> you<00:29:51.086> are<00:29:51.262> only<00:29:51.647> able<00:29:51.823> to<00:29:52.048> access<00:29:52.448> your<00:29:52.545> civil<00:29:52.865> rights,<00:29:53.651> if<00:29:53.731> you<00:29:53.891> can<00:29:54.003> afford<00:29:54.292> a<00:29:54.372> lawyer,<00:29:54.629> then<00:29:54.725> effectively<00:29:55.334> many<00:29:55.494> people<00:29:55.735> don't<00:29:55.895> have<00:29:56.007> those<00:29:56.103> civil<00:29:56.376> rights<00:29:56.568> at<00:29:56.696> all.
00:29:57.354 --> 00:30:00.928
So<00:29:57.658> that<00:29:57.899> is<00:29:58.059> the<00:29:58.700> macro<00:29:59.117> problem<00:29:59.662> that<00:29:59.758> we<00:29:59.903> have<00:30:00.063> set<00:30:00.303> out<00:30:00.399> to<00:30:00.496> solve.
00:30:01.586 --> 00:30:20.267
And<00:30:02.307> it<00:30:02.403> is<00:30:03.750> both<00:30:04.006> a<00:30:04.086> humanitarian<00:30:04.824> issue<00:30:05.289> because<00:30:05.754> these<00:30:05.930> are<00:30:05.994> challenges,<00:30:06.571> especially<00:30:07.453> as<00:30:07.533> you<00:30:07.677> look<00:30:07.853> to<00:30:08.078> the<00:30:08.976> cases<00:30:09.521> of<00:30:09.617> self-represented<00:30:10.338> litigants<00:30:10.723> who<00:30:10.755> are<00:30:10.883> going<00:30:11.092> to<00:30:11.220> court<00:30:11.781> and<00:30:11.941> advocating<00:30:12.406> for<00:30:12.518> themselves<00:30:13.063> in<00:30:13.224> very<00:30:13.528> high-stakes<00:30:13.945> scenarios<00:30:14.506> and<00:30:15.051> often<00:30:15.291> having<00:30:15.853> very<00:30:16.173> adverse<00:30:16.574> outcomes<00:30:17.151> when<00:30:17.456> up<00:30:17.568> against<00:30:18.998> professional<00:30:19.479> opposing<00:30:19.865> counsel.
00:30:21.230 --> 00:30:21.857
Those<00:30:21.391> are<00:30:21.471> real<00:30:21.632> stories.
00:30:21.921 --> 00:30:24.459
Those<00:30:22.050> are<00:30:22.130> real<00:30:22.355> people<00:30:22.676> with<00:30:22.853> real<00:30:23.158> problems<00:30:23.511> happening<00:30:23.961> every<00:30:24.202> day.
00:30:25.021 --> 00:30:26.483
But<00:30:25.101> it's<00:30:25.262> not<00:30:25.423> just<00:30:25.664> the<00:30:25.808> human<00:30:26.049> side<00:30:26.242> of<00:30:26.306> it,<00:30:26.387> right?
00:30:26.531 --> 00:30:27.639
It's<00:30:26.692> also<00:30:26.788> the<00:30:26.933> economic<00:30:27.350> side.
00:30:28.057 --> 00:30:41.100
By<00:30:28.169> not<00:30:29.021> arming<00:30:29.583> our<00:30:29.776> small<00:30:30.161> businesses,<00:30:30.804> the<00:30:30.884> most<00:30:31.109> entrepreneurial<00:30:31.832> members<00:30:32.105> of<00:30:32.185> our<00:30:32.266> society,<00:30:32.876> with<00:30:32.956> the<00:30:33.117> legal<00:30:33.358> tools<00:30:33.679> that<00:30:33.775> they<00:30:33.936> need<00:30:34.241> to<00:30:34.402> start<00:30:34.723> and<00:30:34.803> grow<00:30:35.044> businesses<00:30:35.542> and<00:30:35.623> succeed<00:30:36.088> in<00:30:36.121> growing<00:30:36.345> those<00:30:36.506> businesses,<00:30:37.534> we<00:30:37.695> are<00:30:37.855> hamstringing<00:30:39.317> the<00:30:39.478> economic<00:30:39.879> powerhouse<00:30:40.458> of<00:30:40.522> our<00:30:40.682> country.
00:30:41.148 --> 00:30:42.176
We<00:30:41.229> are<00:30:41.405> limiting<00:30:41.710> our<00:30:41.887> growth.
00:30:42.273 --> 00:30:45.292
We<00:30:42.353> are<00:30:42.514> limiting<00:30:43.317> what<00:30:43.493> we<00:30:43.638> are<00:30:43.734> able<00:30:43.975> to<00:30:44.136> do<00:30:44.602> on<00:30:44.682> a<00:30:44.762> global<00:30:45.035> scale.
00:30:45.966 --> 00:30:54.490
And<00:30:47.328> I<00:30:47.344> think<00:30:47.584> so<00:30:47.825> much<00:30:48.049> of<00:30:48.129> that<00:30:48.386> begins<00:30:48.866> with<00:30:49.010> having<00:30:49.331> access<00:30:49.651> to<00:30:49.748> the<00:30:49.812> right<00:30:50.052> opportunities,<00:30:51.430> including<00:30:52.471> legal<00:30:52.776> opportunities<00:30:53.353> and<00:30:53.433> legal<00:30:53.657> resources<00:30:54.074> that<00:30:54.218> you<00:30:54.250> need.
00:30:54.538 --> 00:30:57.406
So<00:30:55.340> that's,<00:30:55.980> that's<00:30:56.157> how<00:30:56.381> we<00:30:56.557> approach<00:30:56.878> that<00:30:57.038> question.
00:30:57.519 --> 00:31:00.531
That's<00:30:58.079> the<00:30:59.041> macro<00:30:59.441> problem<00:30:59.842> we<00:30:59.938> are<00:31:00.002> trying<00:31:00.194> to<00:31:00.307> solve.
00:31:00.883 --> 00:31:01.877
I<00:31:00.964> think<00:31:01.220> it<00:31:01.284> is<00:31:01.428> a<00:31:01.524> big<00:31:01.749> one.
00:31:01.925 --> 00:31:09.135
I<00:31:02.005> think<00:31:02.245> it<00:31:02.326> is<00:31:02.486> one<00:31:02.726> that<00:31:02.886> a<00:31:02.902> lot<00:31:03.111> of<00:31:03.143> people<00:31:03.351> don't<00:31:03.527> even<00:31:03.687> know<00:31:03.944> is<00:31:04.088> a<00:31:04.168> problem,<00:31:05.130> but<00:31:05.450> it<00:31:05.546> has<00:31:05.770> massive<00:31:06.107> implications<00:31:06.732> on<00:31:06.876> both<00:31:06.988> a<00:31:07.036> humanitarian<00:31:07.693> level<00:31:08.334> and<00:31:08.398> an<00:31:08.478> economic<00:31:08.895> level.
00:31:09.680 --> 00:31:12.708
You<00:31:09.776> basically<00:31:10.161> just<00:31:10.401> answered<00:31:10.657> this,<00:31:10.898> but<00:31:11.202> I<00:31:11.282> wonder<00:31:11.459> how<00:31:11.683> you<00:31:11.715> stay<00:31:12.083> motivated.
00:31:12.901 --> 00:31:15.479
And<00:31:12.981> it<00:31:13.077> sounds<00:31:14.130> motivation's<00:31:14.676> not<00:31:14.788> a<00:31:14.869> problem<00:31:15.222> at<00:31:15.351> all.
00:31:16.251 --> 00:31:21.939
But<00:31:16.411> how<00:31:16.492> do<00:31:16.652> you<00:31:16.797> like,<00:31:17.118> uh,<00:31:18.082> and<00:31:18.243> I<00:31:18.340> think<00:31:18.645> again,<00:31:18.902> I<00:31:18.982> think<00:31:19.159> you<00:31:19.288> probably<00:31:19.545> just<00:31:19.946> barely<00:31:20.332> answered<00:31:20.525> the<00:31:20.654> question,<00:31:20.911> but<00:31:21.071> how<00:31:21.168> do<00:31:21.296> you<00:31:21.393> stay<00:31:21.553> motivated?
00:31:22.019 --> 00:31:22.726
What's,<00:31:22.260> what's<00:31:22.437> going<00:31:22.662> on?
00:31:24.723 --> 00:31:25.644
It,<00:31:24.820> it,<00:31:24.884> it's<00:31:25.111> funny<00:31:25.288> you<00:31:25.434> ask<00:31:25.531> that.
00:31:25.709 --> 00:31:31.528
There's<00:31:25.935> a<00:31:26.016> very<00:31:26.258> specific<00:31:26.905> way<00:31:27.390> I<00:31:27.471> think<00:31:27.697> about<00:31:27.956> that<00:31:28.134> because<00:31:29.233> running<00:31:29.976> any<00:31:30.138> business<00:31:30.785> is<00:31:30.930> very<00:31:31.189> hard.
00:31:31.658 --> 00:31:34.923
Running<00:31:31.981> an<00:31:32.062> early<00:31:32.240> stage<00:31:32.547> startup,<00:31:33.274> um,<00:31:33.856> is,<00:31:34.325> is<00:31:34.390> no<00:31:34.503> difference.
00:31:34.987 --> 00:31:38.187
There<00:31:35.294> are<00:31:36.587> huge<00:31:36.910> highs,<00:31:37.395> huge<00:31:37.799> lows.
00:31:38.769 --> 00:31:48.844
As<00:31:38.882> a<00:31:38.947> small<00:31:39.351> team,<00:31:39.819> you<00:31:40.142> can<00:31:42.835> take<00:31:42.995> credit<00:31:43.396> for<00:31:43.620> all<00:31:43.797> those<00:31:44.037> wins<00:31:44.422> together,<00:31:44.999> but<00:31:45.143> you<00:31:45.303> also<00:31:45.559> have<00:31:45.784> to<00:31:45.880> shoulder<00:31:46.505> those<00:31:46.825> challenges<00:31:47.723> as<00:31:48.123> a<00:31:48.187> small<00:31:48.524> group.
00:31:48.925 --> 00:31:54.325
And<00:31:49.005> so<00:31:49.806> it<00:31:49.966> can<00:31:50.126> be<00:31:50.271> very<00:31:50.447> taxing<00:31:50.912> and<00:31:51.008> it<00:31:51.072> can<00:31:51.408> challenge<00:31:51.809> your,<00:31:53.235> your<00:31:53.315> motivation,<00:31:53.956> as<00:31:54.037> you<00:31:54.117> said.
00:31:54.437 --> 00:32:02.209
So<00:31:54.758> the,<00:31:55.254> the<00:31:55.351> very<00:31:55.511> specific<00:31:56.040> way<00:31:56.216> that<00:31:56.296> I<00:31:56.440> think<00:31:56.552> about<00:31:56.713> staying<00:31:57.017> motivated<00:31:57.482> is<00:31:57.642> I<00:31:57.738> try<00:31:57.979> to<00:31:58.860> envision<00:31:59.485> the<00:31:59.661> people<00:32:00.126> that<00:32:00.543> we<00:32:01.103> are<00:32:01.184> building<00:32:01.488> this<00:32:01.600> company<00:32:01.905> to<00:32:02.049> help.
00:32:02.289 --> 00:32:04.068
And<00:32:02.385> it's<00:32:02.466> not<00:32:02.626> hard<00:32:02.770> to<00:32:02.850> do<00:32:03.026> because<00:32:03.267> we<00:32:03.347> see<00:32:03.507> them<00:32:03.667> all<00:32:03.732> the<00:32:03.828> time.
00:32:04.469 --> 00:32:15.012
You<00:32:04.549> walk<00:32:04.789> into<00:32:04.933> a<00:32:05.014> courthouse<00:32:05.815> and<00:32:06.616> On<00:32:06.872> any<00:32:07.017> given<00:32:07.257> day,<00:32:07.690> about<00:32:08.795> 90%<00:32:09.420> of<00:32:09.580> the<00:32:09.660> people,<00:32:09.949> depending<00:32:10.237> on<00:32:10.317> the<00:32:10.397> practice<00:32:10.782> area<00:32:10.958> and<00:32:11.038> the<00:32:11.119> type<00:32:11.199> of<00:32:11.343> courtroom<00:32:11.663> that<00:32:11.743> you<00:32:11.824> go<00:32:11.984> into,<00:32:12.721> are<00:32:12.785> going<00:32:12.881> to<00:32:12.961> be<00:32:13.105> in<00:32:13.202> there<00:32:13.586> advocating<00:32:13.987> for<00:32:14.083> themselves<00:32:14.451> without<00:32:14.724> lawyers.
00:32:15.589 --> 00:32:23.665
And<00:32:15.910> you<00:32:16.006> need<00:32:16.150> to<00:32:16.246> do<00:32:16.422> nothing<00:32:17.191> else<00:32:17.608> than<00:32:17.848> sit<00:32:18.169> and<00:32:18.249> watch<00:32:18.553> for<00:32:18.633> a<00:32:18.650> few<00:32:18.826> minutes<00:32:19.210> to<00:32:19.371> understand<00:32:20.332> how<00:32:21.133> unfortunately<00:32:21.758> poorly<00:32:22.078> equipped<00:32:22.415> they<00:32:22.559> are<00:32:22.735> to<00:32:22.832> be<00:32:22.976> in<00:32:23.056> that<00:32:23.216> position.
00:32:24.097 --> 00:32:37.536
But<00:32:24.194> it's<00:32:24.354> a<00:32:24.418> position<00:32:24.818> that<00:32:24.979> we<00:32:25.139> as<00:32:25.235> a<00:32:25.299> society<00:32:25.780> have<00:32:25.876> forced<00:32:26.164> them<00:32:26.325> into<00:32:26.645> with<00:32:26.885> the<00:32:27.607> way<00:32:27.783> that<00:32:27.943> we<00:32:28.087> have<00:32:28.183> structured<00:32:29.129> our<00:32:29.449> regulatory<00:32:30.026> environment,<00:32:30.587> the<00:32:30.667> way<00:32:30.971> that<00:32:31.132> we<00:32:31.308> are<00:32:32.029> limiting<00:32:32.414> lawyers<00:32:32.750> from<00:32:32.910> being<00:32:33.070> able<00:32:33.375> to<00:32:34.338> financially<00:32:35.157> viably<00:32:35.575> serve<00:32:36.282> a<00:32:36.347> big<00:32:36.507> portion<00:32:36.845> of<00:32:36.877> the<00:32:36.909> population.
00:32:38.130 --> 00:32:43.642
It's<00:32:38.275> a<00:32:38.291> situation<00:32:38.853> that<00:32:39.255> we<00:32:39.416> collectively<00:32:39.882> created,<00:32:40.701> and<00:32:40.846> it's<00:32:41.007> one<00:32:41.183> that<00:32:41.408> we<00:32:41.971> at<00:32:42.051> our<00:32:42.147> company<00:32:42.710> are<00:32:42.951> trying<00:32:43.192> to<00:32:43.336> remedy.
00:32:44.140 --> 00:32:59.389
So<00:32:44.718> when<00:32:44.943> I<00:32:45.040> have<00:32:45.602> those<00:32:45.843> late<00:32:46.068> nights<00:32:46.711> and<00:32:47.032> those<00:32:47.434> challenging<00:32:47.932> days,<00:32:48.880> all<00:32:49.041> I<00:32:49.073> need<00:32:49.218> to<00:32:49.298> do<00:32:49.539> is<00:32:49.700> envision<00:32:50.085> the<00:32:50.182> people<00:32:50.808> that<00:32:50.921> are<00:32:50.985> sitting<00:32:51.307> in<00:32:51.403> a<00:32:51.532> courtroom<00:32:52.094> advocating<00:32:52.512> for<00:32:52.624> themselves<00:32:53.637> and<00:32:53.958> probably<00:32:54.440> losing<00:32:54.745> those<00:32:54.906> cases<00:32:55.790> to<00:32:56.674> realize<00:32:57.172> why<00:32:57.300> we're<00:32:57.509> doing<00:32:57.750> this<00:32:57.959> and<00:32:58.055> what<00:32:58.200> is<00:32:58.296> the<00:32:58.377> mission<00:32:58.650> that<00:32:58.698> we<00:32:58.779> are<00:32:58.859> trying<00:32:59.084> to<00:32:59.180> achieve.
00:33:00.334 --> 00:33:05.416
Finally,<00:33:00.740> at<00:33:00.838> CEO.com,<00:33:01.633> we<00:33:01.795> believe<00:33:02.023> the<00:33:02.120> chances<00:33:02.607> one<00:33:02.851> takes<00:33:03.321> is<00:33:03.403> just<00:33:03.597> as<00:33:03.727> important<00:33:04.068> as<00:33:04.214> the<00:33:04.295> chances<00:33:04.782> one<00:33:04.961> gives.
00:33:06.016 --> 00:33:10.273
And<00:33:06.162> I<00:33:06.260> wonder<00:33:06.503> when<00:33:06.731> you<00:33:06.974> hear<00:33:07.234> that,<00:33:08.306> who<00:33:08.473> gave<00:33:08.723> you<00:33:08.890> a<00:33:08.956> chance<00:33:09.223> to<00:33:09.373> get<00:33:09.540> you<00:33:09.640> to<00:33:09.706> where<00:33:09.873> you<00:33:09.990> are<00:33:10.140> today?
00:33:11.927 --> 00:33:28.952
Our<00:33:12.041> investors,<00:33:13.422> our<00:33:13.503> investors,<00:33:15.030> both<00:33:15.258> at<00:33:15.339> Crediverso<00:33:16.395> and<00:33:16.557> My<00:33:16.655> Pocket<00:33:17.045> Lawyer,<00:33:18.806> are<00:33:19.691> people<00:33:20.093> who<00:33:20.673> were<00:33:21.381> willing<00:33:21.784> to<00:33:23.812> recognize<00:33:24.681> a<00:33:24.778> problem<00:33:25.837> that<00:33:26.078> maybe<00:33:26.415> didn't<00:33:27.844> impact<00:33:28.245> them<00:33:28.422> personally.
00:33:29.610 --> 00:33:36.016
And<00:33:30.493> you<00:33:30.589> can<00:33:30.750> imagine<00:33:31.232> the<00:33:31.376> challenges<00:33:32.099> with<00:33:33.222> raising<00:33:33.544> capital<00:33:33.961> around<00:33:34.266> an<00:33:34.362> idea<00:33:34.764> that<00:33:34.908> is<00:33:35.005> very<00:33:35.229> foreign<00:33:35.550> to<00:33:35.647> someone.
00:33:36.112 --> 00:33:38.858
So<00:33:36.369> I'll<00:33:36.771> give<00:33:36.931> you<00:33:36.995> an<00:33:37.076> example<00:33:37.557> here<00:33:37.750> that<00:33:37.911> has<00:33:38.119> always<00:33:38.280> stuck<00:33:38.537> with<00:33:38.762> me.
00:33:38.922 --> 00:33:54.207
I<00:33:39.018> was<00:33:39.725> speaking<00:33:40.062> with<00:33:40.367> a,<00:33:41.041> a<00:33:41.106> friend<00:33:41.330> of<00:33:41.363> mine,<00:33:41.571> a<00:33:41.652> woman<00:33:41.908> who's<00:33:42.294> an<00:33:42.535> incredible<00:33:42.936> entrepreneur,<00:33:43.674> and<00:33:44.702> her<00:33:45.906> early<00:33:46.468> fundraising<00:33:47.110> experience<00:33:47.913> was<00:33:48.234> around<00:33:48.491> a<00:33:48.555> company<00:33:48.957> that<00:33:49.053> was<00:33:49.214> delivering<00:33:50.321> breast<00:33:50.643> milk<00:33:50.899> from<00:33:51.204> working<00:33:51.542> moms<00:33:52.264> in<00:33:52.344> the<00:33:52.489> workplace<00:33:53.388> to<00:33:53.629> their<00:33:53.789> babies<00:33:54.127> at<00:33:54.159> home.

As<00:34:52.314> you<00:34:52.394> said<00:34:52.571> at<00:34:52.635> the<00:34:52.699> beginning<00:34:52.971> of<00:34:53.036> the<00:34:53.180> call,<00:34:53.597> and<00:34:53.757> most<00:34:53.998> people<00:34:54.239> are<00:34:54.383> aware<00:34:54.880> of<00:34:55.201> the<00:34:55.601> the<00:34:55.825> challenges<00:34:56.242> facing<00:34:56.563> the<00:34:56.707> criminal<00:34:56.948> justice<00:34:57.317> system<00:34:57.606> in<00:34:57.670> the<00:34:57.750> country,<00:34:58.167> but<00:34:58.343> the<00:34:58.472> challenges<00:34:58.825> facing<00:34:59.129> the<00:34:59.209> civil<00:34:59.434> legal<00:34:59.675> system<00:35:00.557> are<00:35:01.214> arguably<00:35:01.455> just<00:35:01.712> as<00:35:01.840> far-reaching,<00:35:02.738> yet<00:35:02.979> they<00:35:03.059> don't<00:35:03.299> get<00:35:03.460> nearly<00:35:03.765> as<00:35:03.861> much<00:35:04.037> attention<00:35:04.518> from<00:35:04.807> press,<00:35:05.128> from<00:35:05.304> investors,<00:35:06.010> from<00:35:06.812> entrepreneurs.
00:35:07.854 --> 00:35:24.374
So<00:35:09.073> I<00:35:09.154> think<00:35:09.410> if<00:35:09.538> there's<00:35:09.955> anyone<00:35:10.196> to<00:35:10.276> thank<00:35:10.533> here,<00:35:11.864> it<00:35:11.944> is<00:35:12.746> probably<00:35:12.923> first<00:35:13.195> our<00:35:13.324> investors<00:35:13.949> and<00:35:14.045> then<00:35:14.671> second<00:35:14.928> our<00:35:15.072> team<00:35:15.473> for<00:35:15.970> willing—<00:35:16.275> being<00:35:16.435> willing<00:35:16.596> to<00:35:16.692> take<00:35:16.916> that<00:35:17.173> journey<00:35:17.430> with<00:35:17.654> me<00:35:18.039> and<00:35:18.841> recognize<00:35:19.643> the<00:35:19.900> gravity<00:35:20.236> of<00:35:20.300> the<00:35:20.445> problem<00:35:21.167> and<00:35:21.423> the<00:35:21.648> potential<00:35:22.065> that<00:35:22.225> we<00:35:22.369> have<00:35:22.931> as<00:35:23.027> a<00:35:23.091> group<00:35:23.412> to<00:35:23.508> be<00:35:23.653> able<00:35:23.733> to<00:35:23.765> solve<00:35:24.054> that<00:35:24.150> problem.
00:35:25.416 --> 00:35:25.919
I<00:35:25.514> love<00:35:25.741> it.
00:35:26.000 --> 00:35:26.697
That's<00:35:26.162> incredible.
00:35:27.119 --> 00:35:28.561
And<00:35:27.524> you're<00:35:28.010> right,<00:35:28.351> it<00:35:28.496> is.
00:35:29.080 --> 00:35:36.772
There<00:35:29.242> is<00:35:29.388> a<00:35:29.469> very<00:35:29.664> specific<00:35:30.474> type<00:35:30.799> of<00:35:31.025> company<00:35:32.144> and<00:35:32.306> profile<00:35:32.906> of<00:35:33.020> entrepreneur<00:35:33.776> that<00:35:34.421> normally<00:35:34.823> gets<00:35:35.065> funded<00:35:36.192> by<00:35:36.417> VCs.
00:35:37.625 --> 00:35:41.264
And<00:35:38.028> I<00:35:38.140> don't<00:35:39.107> know<00:35:39.235> how<00:35:39.332> to<00:35:39.558> change<00:35:39.880> that,<00:35:40.057> but<00:35:40.459> you're<00:35:40.685> exactly<00:35:41.023> right.
00:35:42.070 --> 00:35:42.984
What<00:35:42.166> about<00:35:42.360> personally,<00:35:42.721> though?
00:35:43.050 --> 00:35:44.167
Who<00:35:43.214> gave<00:35:43.444> you<00:35:43.526> a<00:35:43.543> chance<00:35:43.872> personally?
00:35:47.674 --> 00:35:48.533
That's<00:35:47.852> a<00:35:47.917> great<00:35:48.144> question.
00:35:48.873 --> 00:35:57.824
Well,<00:35:50.251> I<00:35:50.267> think<00:35:50.996> the,<00:35:51.304> the<00:35:51.466> obvious<00:35:51.872> answer<00:35:52.817> is,<00:35:53.860> uh,<00:35:54.422> I<00:35:54.518> am<00:35:55.305> batting<00:35:55.866> way<00:35:56.123> out<00:35:56.284> of<00:35:56.380> my<00:35:56.605> league<00:35:56.926> with<00:35:57.086> my<00:35:57.182> fiancée.
00:35:58.691 --> 00:36:04.052
She<00:35:59.012> is<00:35:59.413> an<00:35:59.494> absolutely<00:36:00.136> wonderful<00:36:00.521> person,<00:36:01.243> and<00:36:02.206> I<00:36:02.383> do<00:36:02.479> not<00:36:02.704> deserve<00:36:03.089> her<00:36:03.249> even<00:36:03.570> a<00:36:03.586> little<00:36:03.811> bit.
00:36:04.806 --> 00:36:06.170
So<00:36:05.015> she<00:36:05.191> gives<00:36:05.416> me<00:36:05.496> chances<00:36:05.898> every<00:36:06.074> day.
00:36:06.235 --> 00:36:08.626
She<00:36:06.459> gave<00:36:06.556> me<00:36:06.700> a<00:36:06.716> chance<00:36:07.198> when<00:36:07.503> we<00:36:07.583> went<00:36:07.743> out<00:36:07.904> on<00:36:07.936> our<00:36:08.064> first<00:36:08.321> date.
00:36:08.947 --> 00:36:13.746
She<00:36:09.043> gave<00:36:09.156> me<00:36:09.284> a<00:36:09.348> chance<00:36:09.605> on<00:36:09.685> the<00:36:09.750> second<00:36:10.151> date,<00:36:10.472> and<00:36:10.552> she<00:36:10.729> gave<00:36:10.825> me<00:36:10.953> a<00:36:10.969> chance<00:36:11.290> last<00:36:11.467> September<00:36:11.997> when<00:36:12.157> she<00:36:12.494> said<00:36:12.751> yes<00:36:12.976> and<00:36:13.056> agreed<00:36:13.297> to<00:36:13.377> marry<00:36:13.634> me.
00:36:13.794 --> 00:36:15.897
So<00:36:14.195> I'm<00:36:15.142> very<00:36:15.383> lucky<00:36:15.608> to<00:36:15.688> have<00:36:15.865> her.
00:36:15.945 --> 00:36:19.387
She's<00:36:16.330> a,<00:36:17.229> um,<00:36:18.710> an<00:36:18.790> incredible<00:36:19.113> person.
00:36:19.435 --> 00:36:26.275
She<00:36:20.645> is<00:36:20.823> a<00:36:20.903> filmmaker,<00:36:21.468> which<00:36:21.629> is<00:36:21.710> really<00:36:21.871> interesting<00:36:22.194> because<00:36:22.581> I<00:36:23.146> come<00:36:23.307> from<00:36:23.484> this<00:36:23.565> space<00:36:24.113> of<00:36:24.759> law<00:36:25.097> and<00:36:25.243> finance<00:36:25.662> and<00:36:25.743> technology.
00:36:27.357 --> 00:36:31.776
And<00:36:27.518> I<00:36:27.615> had,<00:36:27.954> even<00:36:28.099> though<00:36:28.180> I<00:36:28.260> grew<00:36:28.421> up<00:36:28.567> in<00:36:28.599> Los<00:36:28.825> Angeles,<00:36:29.631> very<00:36:29.954> little<00:36:30.131> exposure<00:36:30.744> to<00:36:30.841> the<00:36:30.922> entertainment<00:36:31.389> industry.
00:36:32.631 --> 00:36:37.595
So<00:36:32.793> when<00:36:32.938> we<00:36:33.083> met,<00:36:34.020> one<00:36:34.116> would<00:36:34.293> think<00:36:34.599> that<00:36:34.760> we<00:36:35.421> might<00:36:35.582> not<00:36:35.759> have<00:36:35.888> had<00:36:36.129> that<00:36:36.323> much<00:36:36.612> to<00:36:36.709> be<00:36:36.790> able<00:36:36.935> to<00:36:37.015> connect<00:36:37.418> on.
00:36:37.675 --> 00:36:45.823
But<00:36:39.350> as<00:36:39.592> a<00:36:39.608> filmmaker,<00:36:40.236> if<00:36:40.333> you're<00:36:40.494> in<00:36:40.655> a<00:36:40.816> director<00:36:41.363> role<00:36:41.621> or<00:36:41.782> a<00:36:41.863> production<00:36:42.346> role<00:36:42.507> or<00:36:42.748> even<00:36:42.910> a<00:36:42.974> writing<00:36:43.216> role,<00:36:43.332> this<00:36:43.498> is<00:36:43.631> roles<00:36:43.963> that<00:36:44.129> she's<00:36:45.458> all<00:36:45.558> been<00:36:45.790> in.
00:36:47.099 --> 00:36:50.047
It's<00:36:47.423> very<00:36:47.666> much<00:36:47.828> the<00:36:47.909> same<00:36:48.087> challenges<00:36:48.476> that<00:36:48.556> you<00:36:48.637> have<00:36:49.383> running<00:36:49.626> a<00:36:49.707> company.
00:36:50.112 --> 00:36:54.858
You<00:36:50.209> have<00:36:50.371> a<00:36:50.435> lot<00:36:50.614> of<00:36:50.678> people<00:36:51.148> to<00:36:51.990> orchestrate<00:36:52.849> and<00:36:53.011> challenges<00:36:53.594> that<00:36:53.740> come<00:36:53.983> up<00:36:54.145> that<00:36:54.242> you<00:36:54.323> have<00:36:54.485> to<00:36:54.566> solve.
00:36:55.430 --> 00:36:57.460
So<00:36:55.768> we<00:36:55.929> were<00:36:56.010> able<00:36:56.171> to<00:36:56.252> connect<00:36:56.509> very<00:36:56.751> easily<00:36:57.058> on<00:36:57.154> that.
00:36:57.622 --> 00:37:09.382
And<00:36:59.653> she<00:37:01.168> shared<00:37:01.506> with<00:37:01.732> me<00:37:02.135> on<00:37:02.167> our<00:37:02.296> first<00:37:02.635> date<00:37:03.102> a,<00:37:06.309> a<00:37:06.374> film<00:37:06.859> that<00:37:07.020> she<00:37:07.198> had<00:37:07.522> both<00:37:08.088> directed,<00:37:08.589> written,<00:37:08.816> and<00:37:08.897> produced.
00:37:09.608 --> 00:37:13.684
That's<00:37:10.094> 3<00:37:10.336> things<00:37:10.918> called<00:37:11.080> The<00:37:11.161> Tent<00:37:11.404> Mender,<00:37:11.711> which<00:37:11.824> addresses<00:37:12.277> homelessness<00:37:12.698> on<00:37:12.778> Skid<00:37:13.021> Row<00:37:13.118> in<00:37:13.183> Los<00:37:13.425> Angeles.
00:37:13.749 --> 00:37:15.163
It's<00:37:13.830> available<00:37:14.218> on<00:37:14.299> Amazon<00:37:14.638> Prime<00:37:14.816> if<00:37:14.881> you<00:37:14.930> want<00:37:15.030> to<00:37:15.063> go<00:37:15.113> watch.
00:37:15.213 --> 00:37:27.398
And<00:37:15.263> first<00:37:15.380> thing<00:37:15.430> I<00:37:15.463> did<00:37:15.513> after<00:37:15.580> that<00:37:15.630> first<00:37:15.696> date,<00:37:15.780> I<00:37:15.796> went<00:37:17.850> went<00:37:17.930> home<00:37:17.978> and<00:37:18.042> I<00:37:18.122> watched<00:37:18.588> the,<00:37:18.844> the<00:37:18.925> whole<00:37:19.149> thing,<00:37:19.952> and<00:37:20.513> I<00:37:20.931> had<00:37:21.396> great<00:37:21.572> respect<00:37:22.198> for<00:37:22.375> a<00:37:22.439> field<00:37:22.760> that<00:37:22.856> I<00:37:23.883> understood<00:37:24.220> very<00:37:24.461> little<00:37:24.686> about<00:37:25.488> and<00:37:25.745> was<00:37:25.905> really<00:37:26.146> able<00:37:26.306> to<00:37:26.371> see<00:37:26.483> a<00:37:26.547> lot<00:37:26.708> of<00:37:26.772> commonalities.
00:37:27.446 --> 00:37:33.624
