The mission statement came first

Peter Platzer wrote a one-sentence mission statement for his life: to lead, inspire, and create the business of space for the benefit of all. Eleven years passed before he did anything about it.

The sentence came out of The Path, Laurie Beth Jones's book on writing a mission statement for your life. Not your career, Platzer stressed on the CEO.com Podcast. Your life. The process takes six to eight weeks. Which of the four elements are you? Which gifts from your parents and teachers did you accept? Which expectations do you carry in the backpack that were never really yours? "You need to give it time to breathe," he said. "You can't just do it five minutes over lunch."

Platzer had loved space since he was a teenager. He had also concluded, checking in on the industry every decade or so, that it had no room for someone who wanted to build things. So he built a conventional career instead. Physics at the Technical University of Vienna, training at CERN and the Max Planck Institute, consulting with BCG in Germany, Singapore, and Thailand, an MBA from Harvard, then nearly ten years as a quant at firms including Deutsche Bank and the Rohatyn Group. "It's going to be okay," he said of living at zero percent of your own mission statement, "as long as you can understand why you're choosing" it. He had bills to pay.

By 2011, satellite capability was improving exponentially, and climate change had moved to the front of the public mind. Platzer quit his trading job at 42, moved into a student dorm at the International Space University in Strasbourg, and sold pieces of his calculator collection to cover food and rent. The program taught the whole industry at once, from orbital engineering to the Outer Space Treaty to the policy differences between India, China, Russia, and the United States. He interned at NASA. In 2012, he co-founded Spire Global.

Spire flies satellites the size of a wine bottle. More than 100 of them cover every point on Earth every 15 minutes, collecting radio frequency data that feeds weather models and spots GPS interference. Platzer estimates a billion people have more accurate forecasts because of it, and would like the number to be eight billion. For most of his tenure, the constellation also tracked roughly 500,000 ships, watching for smuggling and piracy on the open ocean. "Transparency is the best disinfectant," he said.

The company mission took no time to write. It is his own, restated: leverage space to improve life on Earth. The culture took longer. Platzer had worked inside CERN, BCG, Harvard, and hedge funds, and knew that high-performing organizations run on different premises, including eat what you kill. Spire chose otherwise. The values that came out of a three-day seminar include global, reliable, relentless, faster, and collaborative, and they still run through hiring, reviews, and kudos. Global is why the offices sit eight time zones apart; the man Platzer hired early on to run satellite operations made him promise no one would spend a career on the graveyard shift. Reliable is why the profitability deadline the company announced publicly did not move after a war in Europe, spiking interest rates, and inflation all arrived within the following two years.

His optimism about space itself rests partly on a piece of history. The Outer Space Treaty, which declares outer space free for exploration and use by all states, was negotiated at the United Nations and signed by both the United States and the Soviet Union in 1967, in the middle of the Cold War. "I'm the guy who left a good job at 42, live in a dorm, and start a space company," Platzer said. "So I have to be a little bit crazy, and I definitely have to be an optimist."

He ran Spire for 12 years, growing revenue from $10 million to more than $100 million and taking the company public. In January 2025, he handed the CEO role to Theresa Condor, a member of the founding team, and became Executive Chairman. That April, Spire completed the sale of its maritime business to Kpler for approximately $233.5 million, before adjustments, and used the proceeds to retire all of the company's debt.

Every conversation on the CEO.com Podcast ends with the same question, because the chances one gives are just as important as the chances one takes. Platzer named Will Porteous. "He certainly is a huge reason that you and I have a conversation," Platzer said. Porteous listened in 2012, when Platzer's friends at NASA were saying the plan broke the laws of physics, and kept backing the company through the missed deadlines and delayed rockets of the decade that followed.
