Lauren Leader thinks you should run for something
When Lauren Leader ran for her town board in Harrison, New York, women kept telling her they could never do what she was doing. Then she would find out they were on the PTA.
"You want to talk about vicious, hand-to-hand combat politics, spend some time on a PTA," she told the CEO.com Podcast. "They got nothing on running for office."
Leader is the co-founder and CEO of All In Together, a nonpartisan nonprofit founded in 2014 to train women in civic participation and leadership. She came out of management consulting, with stints at Booz & Company, Deloitte and Oliver Wyman, and she still advises companies on leadership and inclusion. She has been a weekly contributor to Morning Joe since 2017. She spoke with CEO.com on October 18, 2021, while serving as an elected councilwoman in Harrison, a seat she held from 2019 to 2023.
The PTA line is a joke with a point under it. Women will fight hard when they think the fight is worth it. The story they have been told about politics is that it isn't. Leader's counter is that a town board controls tens of millions of dollars, decides where the stop signs go, oversees the police and the fire department, and in Harrison that fall had spent a lot of meetings on sewer rates. Not glamorous. Still the job.
"As long as the good people think it's not worth it, we're going to self-fulfill that prophecy. That's how we wind up with a lot of really nutty, fringe people who are absolutely up for themselves and not out for the good of the country in high office."
The numbers she works from cut both ways. When women run, she said, they win at the same rate as men. They just don't run. In 2021, exactly one state, Nevada, had a majority-women legislature, and Congress, she noted, had never cracked 30 percent.
She grew up in Washington, D.C., where both parents worked in public service, and she describes a one-industry town the way people from Los Angeles describe the film business. You end up in it. What pulled her toward women specifically was watching how many of them didn't seem to mind that decisions were being made without them.
That's also the argument of her 2016 book, Crossing the Thinnest Line, which makes the economic case rather than the moral one: the country leaves money on the table when it leaves people out, and the biggest group left out is women. Asked whether five years and a pandemic had changed her mind, she said the pandemic had made it worse.
Her explanation is blunt. The United States has no universal childcare, but it did have public schools, which functioned as the closest thing. Then it closed them. "We completely wiped out the one remaining source of reliable support for working women." France, she noted, shut nearly everything and kept the schools open. She expects the closures to be remembered as one of the worst decisions of the era, and not only for the women who left the workforce. Kids lost a year. The parents who stayed employed could not put in the hours they had before.
The one change she counts as a gain is that nobody she knows in professional work expects to go back to five days in the office. The fathers who spent 2020 at Little League don't want the 5 a.m. train back. She thinks CEOs waiting for a return to the jacket-on-the-chair, 40 to 60 hours a week model of commitment are waiting for something that is not coming.
Her fix is paid leave and affordable childcare, and she insists on calling both infrastructure. At the time of the interview, the Build Back Better Act included a 12-week paid leave program run through Social Security. Only about 30 percent of Americans had any paid leave at all, she said, and workers at companies under 50 people had no protected leave of any kind. "It's unconscionable that we've never done this."
The House passed the bill on November 19, 2021, with paid leave cut to four weeks. It died in the Senate a month later. There is still no federal paid leave.
On CEOs, Leader is more generous than most people in her line of work. She works with a lot of them, and she gives particular credit to the white men who have put their own careers behind diversity commitments rather than delegating them. When she was asked how to tell a company that means it from one doing public relations, she said some of it is PR, and she doesn't care much. "You're making a difference, you're doing something positive that you probably wouldn't have done otherwise, it's enough positive in my book."
The social platforms were a harder question, and she was open that Facebook and Twitter funded All In Together at the time. She thought the criticism that followed the Wall Street Journal's reporting on Instagram and teenage girls leaned on a limited study, an argument Facebook itself made in its response. Her own comparison was the Victoria's Secret catalog that arrived at her house through her whole childhood. "Every woman I know, my age, found that the Victoria's Secret catalog was absolutely devastating to their self-esteem."
What she wanted the companies to do more was threats. Between the television work and the town board, she had received enough of them, some directed at her children, that she hired security for her house. Every woman in Congress she knew had done the same. She gave Twitter credit for banning political ads in 2019, a decision she read as an admission that the company could not police the truth of what it was selling, and she wanted the same seriousness applied to violence.
The last question was about people fired for old posts. Her corporate clients have strict social media policies, courts have upheld them, and she expects more of that. She also thinks the mob usually goes too far. "I don't think it's fair to hold somebody accountable for the rest of their lives for the thing they did at 16." Monica Lewinsky's TED Talk, The Price of Shame, changed how she thinks about public humiliation, and she recommended it.
When she recorded this, Leader was the only woman on the Harrison town board. Four women were on the ballot that November. Her bio now says there are three.

00:01:02.143 --> 00:01:04.271
Lauren,<00:01:02.562> it<00:01:02.663> is<00:01:03.065> such<00:01:03.316> an<00:01:03.383> honor<00:01:03.635> to<00:01:03.702> have<00:01:03.886> you<00:01:03.986> on<00:01:04.137> the<00:01:04.221> show.

You<00:01:06.338> spoke<00:01:06.805> at<00:01:07.046> Silicon<00:01:07.546> Slope<00:01:07.835> Summit<00:01:08.174> a<00:01:08.238> few<00:01:08.496> years<00:01:08.802> back,<00:01:09.204> and<00:01:09.478> I<00:01:09.623> think<00:01:09.800> it<00:01:09.929> was<00:01:10.170> the<00:01:10.251> most<00:01:11.958> popular<00:01:12.682> and<00:01:12.843> well-received<00:01:14.051> keynote<00:01:14.598> of<00:01:14.695> the<00:01:14.792> whole<00:01:15.082> conference.

00:01:17.836 --> 00:01:21.348
I've<00:01:17.981> wanted<00:01:18.223> to<00:01:18.320> talk<00:01:18.561> to<00:01:18.626> you<00:01:19.045> ever<00:01:19.270> since<00:01:19.608> then<00:01:19.834> for<00:01:19.995> a<00:01:20.027> show<00:01:20.333> or<00:01:20.495> a<00:01:20.575> podcast<00:01:21.058> or<00:01:21.123> something.
00:01:21.413 --> 00:01:22.879
So<00:01:21.526> I'm<00:01:21.864> glad<00:01:22.106> I<00:01:22.170> had<00:01:22.331> this<00:01:22.508> opportunity.
00:01:23.470 --> 00:01:27.005
You<00:01:23.552> wrote<00:01:23.601> a<00:01:23.733> book,<00:01:24.144> was<00:01:24.259> it<00:01:24.390> in<00:01:24.489> 2016,<00:01:25.459> called<00:01:25.722> Crossing<00:01:26.298> the<00:01:26.528> Thinnest<00:01:26.873> Line?
00:01:27.862 --> 00:01:35.206
And<00:01:28.007> the<00:01:28.087> whole<00:01:28.247> idea<00:01:28.520> behind<00:01:28.905> it<00:01:29.049> was<00:01:29.706> diversity<00:01:30.412> is<00:01:30.588> the<00:01:30.652> most<00:01:31.053> underleveraged<00:01:32.176> economic<00:01:32.817> asset<00:01:33.940> in<00:01:34.036> the<00:01:34.180> United<00:01:34.741> States.
00:01:36.377 --> 00:01:38.766
Do<00:01:36.441> you<00:01:36.521> still<00:01:36.762> believe<00:01:37.002> that<00:01:38.109> 5<00:01:38.349> years<00:01:38.526> later?
00:01:39.873 --> 00:01:40.546
Yeah,<00:01:40.033> it's<00:01:40.161> still<00:01:40.370> true.
00:01:40.674 --> 00:01:43.064
And<00:01:40.835> actually,<00:01:41.171> in<00:01:41.252> some<00:01:41.412> ways,<00:01:41.636> it's<00:01:41.813> more<00:01:42.037> true<00:01:42.198> now<00:01:42.454> than<00:01:42.615> it<00:01:42.679> was<00:01:42.919> then.
00:01:43.160 --> 00:01:47.473
So,<00:01:43.336> first<00:01:43.593> of<00:01:43.721> all,<00:01:44.154> it's<00:01:44.459> a<00:01:44.603> pleasure<00:01:44.859> to<00:01:44.940> be<00:01:45.100> with<00:01:45.244> you,<00:01:45.501> and<00:01:45.597> I'm<00:01:45.741> so<00:01:45.886> admiring<00:01:46.303> of<00:01:46.447> all<00:01:46.479> the<00:01:46.623> things<00:01:46.800> you<00:01:46.864> do,<00:01:47.024> Clinton.
00:01:47.906 --> 00:01:49.911

And<00:02:21.854> what<00:02:21.998> I<00:02:22.094> talked<00:02:22.399> about<00:02:22.815> several<00:02:23.120> years<00:02:23.296> ago,<00:02:23.617> a<00:02:23.633> lot<00:02:23.937> of<00:02:24.017> it<00:02:24.162> is<00:02:24.258> still<00:02:25.203> very<00:02:25.460> relevant.
00:02:26.325 --> 00:02:34.034
And<00:02:26.726> on<00:02:26.998> the<00:02:27.143> economic<00:02:27.559> side,<00:02:28.168> just<00:02:28.265> since<00:02:28.505> you<00:02:28.585> wanted<00:02:28.826> to<00:02:28.922> start<00:02:29.210> there,<00:02:29.787> clearly<00:02:30.589> in<00:02:30.733> COVID,<00:02:31.534> these<00:02:31.871> issues<00:02:32.191> have<00:02:32.592> become<00:02:33.537> even<00:02:33.794> bigger.
00:02:34.114 --> 00:02:47.914
So<00:02:34.820> the<00:02:35.877> basic<00:02:36.358> point<00:02:36.823> is<00:02:36.919> that<00:02:37.881> we<00:02:38.041> are<00:02:38.346> leaving<00:02:38.762> money<00:02:39.067> on<00:02:39.163> the<00:02:39.243> table<00:02:40.349> as<00:02:40.525> a<00:02:40.541> society<00:02:41.246> when<00:02:41.407> we<00:02:41.631> leave<00:02:42.112> out<00:02:42.849> big<00:02:43.009> segments<00:02:43.570> of<00:02:43.795> our<00:02:45.157> population<00:02:46.135> from<00:02:46.776> economic<00:02:47.241> participation.
00:02:48.138 --> 00:02:49.853
And<00:02:48.362> obviously,<00:02:48.619> the<00:02:48.763> biggest<00:02:49.020> piece<00:02:49.196> of<00:02:49.260> that<00:02:49.420> is<00:02:49.580> women.
00:02:50.462 --> 00:03:14.288
For<00:02:50.703> years,<00:02:51.089> we've<00:02:51.265> known<00:02:51.667> that<00:02:52.774> the<00:02:53.754> gender<00:02:54.139> gap<00:02:54.540> in<00:02:54.717> labor<00:02:54.958> force<00:02:55.199> participation<00:02:56.082> between<00:02:56.403> men<00:02:56.563> and<00:02:56.644> women,<00:02:56.868> just<00:02:57.029> the<00:02:57.206> sheer<00:02:57.446> numbers<00:02:57.767> of<00:02:57.848> people<00:02:58.072> that<00:02:58.153> are<00:02:58.394> in<00:02:58.490> the<00:02:58.570> labor<00:02:58.875> force<00:02:59.036> that<00:02:59.132> are<00:02:59.277> working<00:02:59.550> or<00:02:59.614> not,<00:03:01.380> was<00:03:01.621> a<00:03:01.701> huge<00:03:02.183> drag<00:03:02.664> already<00:03:03.066> before<00:03:03.451> COVID<00:03:03.852> on<00:03:04.013> the<00:03:04.334> economy,<00:03:04.832> that<00:03:05.313> the<00:03:05.410> numbers<00:03:05.731> of<00:03:05.859> women<00:03:06.116> who<00:03:06.260> were<00:03:06.437> already<00:03:06.903> out<00:03:07.063> of<00:03:07.160> the<00:03:07.240> workforce<00:03:08.460> meant<00:03:09.086> that<00:03:09.231> we<00:03:09.391> were<00:03:09.488> leaving<00:03:09.809> trillions<00:03:10.290> of<00:03:10.371> dollars<00:03:10.852> in<00:03:11.013> economic<00:03:11.478> potential<00:03:11.896> for<00:03:12.040> the<00:03:12.072> country<00:03:13.084> on<00:03:13.244> the<00:03:13.903> table.
00:03:14.368 --> 00:03:22.390
And<00:03:15.026> that<00:03:15.412> number<00:03:15.733> has<00:03:15.910> become<00:03:16.536> much,<00:03:16.937> much<00:03:17.194> more<00:03:17.419> dramatic<00:03:17.916> in<00:03:18.077> COVID<00:03:18.398> because<00:03:18.639> we've<00:03:18.864> seen<00:03:19.410> such<00:03:19.602> a<00:03:19.618> mass<00:03:20.243> exodus<00:03:21.108> of<00:03:21.268> women<00:03:21.589> from<00:03:21.749> the<00:03:21.829> workforce.
00:03:23.127 --> 00:03:35.002
Women<00:03:23.432> who<00:03:23.528> dominated<00:03:24.105> a<00:03:24.233> lot<00:03:24.570> of<00:03:24.666> the<00:03:24.794> fields<00:03:25.275> that<00:03:25.595> were<00:03:25.691> really,<00:03:26.028> have<00:03:26.316> been,<00:03:26.717> are<00:03:26.813> the<00:03:26.893> most<00:03:27.117> critical,<00:03:28.271> healthcare,<00:03:29.361> teaching,<00:03:30.338> the<00:03:30.419> services<00:03:30.963> industries,<00:03:31.604> which<00:03:31.845> were<00:03:32.005> all,<00:03:32.646> you<00:03:32.742> know,<00:03:32.886> really<00:03:33.143> hit<00:03:33.367> very<00:03:33.608> hard<00:03:34.345> by<00:03:34.441> the<00:03:34.585> pandemic.
00:03:35.306 --> 00:03:44.809
Women<00:03:35.595> have<00:03:35.787> become<00:03:36.412> increasingly,<00:03:36.893> and<00:03:36.973> I<00:03:37.005> know<00:03:37.389> at<00:03:37.486> Silicon<00:03:37.806> Slopes<00:03:38.030> you<00:03:38.110> guys<00:03:38.207> talk<00:03:38.431> a<00:03:38.495> lot<00:03:38.687> about<00:03:38.896> entrepreneurship,<00:03:39.873> you<00:03:39.953> know,<00:03:40.098> women<00:03:40.290> have<00:03:40.434> been<00:03:40.674> the<00:03:40.819> fastest<00:03:41.155> growing<00:03:42.742> number<00:03:42.918> of<00:03:43.062> entrepreneurs<00:03:43.719> starting<00:03:44.104> new<00:03:44.200> businesses.
00:03:45.226 --> 00:03:59.612
Of<00:03:45.306> any<00:03:45.482> group,<00:03:45.964> but<00:03:46.606> the<00:03:46.767> COVID<00:03:47.168> crisis<00:03:47.795> laid<00:03:48.051> bare<00:03:49.015> what<00:03:49.240> was<00:03:49.480> already<00:03:49.962> really<00:03:50.364> obvious<00:03:50.685> to<00:03:50.765> people<00:03:50.990> like<00:03:51.182> me,<00:03:51.985> which<00:03:52.226> was<00:03:52.387> that<00:03:52.772> we<00:03:53.013> lack<00:03:53.350> the<00:03:53.575> infrastructure<00:03:54.458> in<00:03:54.538> our<00:03:54.651> society<00:03:55.277> to<00:03:55.373> make<00:03:55.582> it<00:03:55.678> possible<00:03:56.160> for<00:03:56.320> women<00:03:56.626> to<00:03:56.866> enter<00:03:57.043> the<00:03:57.123> workforce<00:03:57.525> and<00:03:57.685> stay<00:03:58.231> in<00:03:58.311> the<00:03:58.392> workforce<00:03:58.873> for<00:03:58.970> the<00:03:59.050> long<00:03:59.291> term.
00:04:00.158 --> 00:04:08.010
And<00:04:00.495> we<00:04:00.800> didn't,<00:04:01.202> we<00:04:01.603> for<00:04:01.764> decades<00:04:02.727> have<00:04:02.920> missed<00:04:03.225> the<00:04:03.369> opportunity<00:04:04.028> to<00:04:04.108> make<00:04:04.349> those<00:04:04.590> investments,<00:04:05.473> investments<00:04:05.954> that<00:04:06.099> many<00:04:06.340> other<00:04:06.500> countries<00:04:06.821> around<00:04:07.046> the<00:04:07.142> world<00:04:07.383> have<00:04:07.640> made.
00:04:08.507 --> 00:04:11.012
And<00:04:08.604> as<00:04:08.764> a<00:04:08.828> result,<00:04:09.487> it's<00:04:09.728> really<00:04:09.968> difficult<00:04:10.290> for<00:04:10.434> women<00:04:10.611> to<00:04:10.755> work.
00:04:11.478 --> 00:04:19.735
And<00:04:11.558> then<00:04:11.975> in<00:04:12.120> COVID<00:04:12.537> where<00:04:12.762> you<00:04:12.923> took<00:04:13.164> out,<00:04:13.726> Essentially,<00:04:14.063> you<00:04:14.224> eliminated<00:04:14.786> the<00:04:15.091> only<00:04:15.348> reliable<00:04:16.313> universal<00:04:16.875> childcare<00:04:17.357> in<00:04:17.453> the<00:04:17.566> United<00:04:17.855> States,<00:04:18.642> which<00:04:18.787> is<00:04:18.883> public<00:04:19.189> education.
00:04:20.490 --> 00:04:27.641
When<00:04:20.651> we<00:04:21.053> eliminated<00:04:22.242> the<00:04:22.965> public<00:04:23.222> education<00:04:23.784> as<00:04:23.881> an<00:04:24.090> option<00:04:24.588> for<00:04:25.150> childcare,<00:04:25.632> I<00:04:25.648> mean,<00:04:25.857> we<00:04:25.953> closed<00:04:26.291> schools<00:04:26.853> across<00:04:27.094> America.
00:04:28.042 --> 00:04:34.277
You<00:04:28.107> know,<00:04:28.203> we<00:04:28.348> completely<00:04:28.910> wiped<00:04:29.231> out<00:04:29.392> the<00:04:29.729> one<00:04:30.051> remaining<00:04:31.111> source<00:04:31.802> of<00:04:31.963> reliable<00:04:32.622> support<00:04:33.505> for<00:04:33.650> working<00:04:33.971> women.
00:04:34.855 --> 00:04:39.579
And<00:04:35.257> it's<00:04:35.418> not<00:04:35.610> surprising<00:04:36.060> to<00:04:36.092> me<00:04:36.398> that,<00:04:36.783> you<00:04:36.864> know,<00:04:36.912> millions<00:04:37.426> and<00:04:37.474> millions<00:04:37.780> of<00:04:37.844> women<00:04:38.069> dropped<00:04:38.310> out<00:04:38.406> of<00:04:38.438> the<00:04:38.487> workforce<00:04:38.969> as<00:04:39.129> a<00:04:39.194> result.
00:04:40.718 --> 00:04:43.909
Yeah,<00:04:40.878> and<00:04:40.959> isn't<00:04:41.151> it<00:04:41.279> interesting,<00:04:41.632> like,<00:04:41.937> like<00:04:42.161> a<00:04:42.258> lot<00:04:42.434> of<00:04:42.498> private<00:04:42.883> schools<00:04:43.172> didn't<00:04:43.444> get<00:04:43.605> shut<00:04:43.845> down.
00:04:44.038 --> 00:04:47.117
It<00:04:44.166> was<00:04:44.278> like<00:04:44.423> the<00:04:44.583> public<00:04:45.000> schools<00:04:46.331> that<00:04:46.508> got<00:04:46.748> shut<00:04:46.973> down.
00:04:47.309 --> 00:04:55.906
The,<00:04:47.855> this,<00:04:48.095> the<00:04:48.191> pandemic<00:04:48.657> has<00:04:48.753> been<00:04:48.897> so<00:04:49.057> fascinating<00:04:49.779> and<00:04:50.020> horrible<00:04:51.062> and<00:04:51.223> horrific,<00:04:51.864> obviously,<00:04:52.040> because<00:04:52.281> it's<00:04:52.682> led<00:04:52.842> to,<00:04:53.307> you<00:04:53.404> know,<00:04:53.885> the<00:04:53.965> amount<00:04:54.206> of<00:04:54.286> deaths<00:04:54.606> it<00:04:54.735> has<00:04:54.943> and<00:04:55.072> all<00:04:55.168> that<00:04:55.408> type<00:04:55.585> of<00:04:55.649> stuff.
00:04:56.451 --> 00:04:58.504
But<00:04:56.595> it's<00:04:56.691> fascinating<00:04:57.285> to<00:04:57.333> see<00:04:57.573> what<00:04:57.734> we<00:04:57.894> prioritize.
00:04:58.552 --> 00:05:01.583
Like,<00:04:58.696> Costco<00:04:59.257> can<00:04:59.354> stay<00:04:59.722> open,<00:05:00.059> but<00:05:00.155> small<00:05:00.605> businesses<00:05:01.102> can't.
00:05:02.128 --> 00:05:06.057
Private<00:05:02.609> schools<00:05:03.251> can<00:05:03.411> stay<00:05:03.748> open,<00:05:04.309> but<00:05:04.550> public<00:05:04.967> schools<00:05:05.512> can't.
00:05:06.394 --> 00:05:09.361
And<00:05:06.474> then<00:05:06.635> there<00:05:06.795> was<00:05:07.020> all<00:05:07.180> of<00:05:07.276> these,<00:05:07.613> these<00:05:07.837> folks<00:05:08.142> who<00:05:08.222> were<00:05:08.319> like,<00:05:08.479> hey,<00:05:08.720> stay<00:05:09.024> home.
00:05:09.938 --> 00:05:17.233
Stay<00:05:10.307> home,<00:05:10.884> slow<00:05:11.269> the<00:05:11.301> spread,<00:05:12.952> just<00:05:13.690> DoorDash,<00:05:14.732> just,<00:05:15.181> you<00:05:15.309> know,<00:05:15.613> have<00:05:15.870> everything<00:05:16.319> delivered<00:05:16.736> to<00:05:16.880> your<00:05:16.960> house.
00:05:17.377 --> 00:05:18.788
It's<00:05:17.601> like,<00:05:17.762> who's<00:05:18.082> doing<00:05:18.403> all<00:05:18.579> that?
00:05:18.884 --> 00:05:21.240
Who<00:05:18.980> do<00:05:19.044> you<00:05:19.204> think's<00:05:19.605> doing<00:05:20.583> the<00:05:20.727> DoorDash?
00:05:21.449 --> 00:05:23.565
Who<00:05:21.481> do<00:05:21.689> you<00:05:21.786> think<00:05:22.026> like<00:05:22.250> all<00:05:22.427> this<00:05:22.828> is<00:05:23.373> for?
00:05:24.511 --> 00:05:24.912
We're<00:05:24.655> gonna—.
00:05:25.088 --> 00:05:36.502
Clint,<00:05:25.617> I<00:05:25.713> am<00:05:25.858> convinced<00:05:26.354> that<00:05:26.499> we're<00:05:26.595> gonna<00:05:26.980> all<00:05:27.140> look<00:05:27.316> back<00:05:27.861> on<00:05:28.439> the<00:05:28.535> school<00:05:28.903> closures<00:05:30.106> as<00:05:30.282> the<00:05:30.587> absolute<00:05:31.164> most<00:05:31.885> epic<00:05:32.591> disaster<00:05:33.553> of<00:05:33.649> a<00:05:33.713> terrible<00:05:34.130> set<00:05:34.306> of<00:05:34.450> decisions<00:05:34.931> we<00:05:35.172> ever<00:05:35.332> could<00:05:35.476> have<00:05:35.573> made<00:05:35.877> for<00:05:35.957> our<00:05:36.134> country.
00:05:37.080 --> 00:05:44.684
You<00:05:37.112> know,<00:05:37.272> not<00:05:37.496> just<00:05:37.881> because<00:05:38.218> we<00:05:38.362> failed<00:05:38.923> millions<00:05:39.324> of<00:05:39.420> children,<00:05:40.222> by<00:05:40.318> making<00:05:40.623> them<00:05:40.880> stay<00:05:41.185> home<00:05:41.506> and<00:05:42.373> be<00:05:42.533> on<00:05:42.694> Zoom,<00:05:43.031> which<00:05:43.352> we<00:05:43.576> all<00:05:43.608> know<00:05:43.833> is<00:05:43.994> just<00:05:44.218> horrendous.
00:05:44.876 --> 00:05:47.380
It<00:05:44.941> was<00:05:45.342> like<00:05:45.663> torture<00:05:46.096> for<00:05:46.321> children,<00:05:46.963> terrible.
00:05:47.444 --> 00:05:49.916
My<00:05:47.589> kids<00:05:47.926> just<00:05:48.648> could<00:05:48.889> not<00:05:49.290> deal<00:05:49.515> with<00:05:49.675> it.
00:05:50.398 --> 00:05:56.224
Um,<00:05:51.120> and,<00:05:51.762> you<00:05:51.794> know,<00:05:52.243> because<00:05:52.564> we<00:05:52.741> drained<00:05:54.089> future<00:05:54.506> potential<00:05:55.148> from<00:05:55.309> our<00:05:55.469> society<00:05:56.015> as<00:05:56.111> well.
00:05:56.898 --> 00:06:00.252
And<00:05:57.620> that,<00:05:58.037> I<00:05:58.118> think,<00:05:59.000> is<00:05:59.161> one<00:05:59.386> of<00:05:59.482> the<00:05:59.626> pieces<00:05:59.979> of<00:06:00.108> this.
00:06:00.525 --> 00:06:14.045
You<00:06:00.605> know,<00:06:00.766> look,<00:06:00.991> we're<00:06:01.312> all<00:06:01.408> trying<00:06:01.665> to<00:06:01.729> make<00:06:01.905> the<00:06:01.986> best<00:06:02.162> decisions<00:06:02.628> we<00:06:02.756> can,<00:06:03.398> and,<00:06:03.976> you<00:06:04.056> know,<00:06:04.201> I<00:06:04.281> think<00:06:04.441> our<00:06:04.538> public<00:06:04.778> health<00:06:05.019> officials<00:06:05.966> you<00:06:05.998> know,<00:06:06.222> really<00:06:06.607> wanted<00:06:06.944> to—<00:06:07.328> obviously<00:06:07.649> we<00:06:07.745> wanted<00:06:07.969> to<00:06:08.050> protect<00:06:08.306> our<00:06:08.386> children,<00:06:08.787> and<00:06:08.931> that's<00:06:09.172> critical,<00:06:09.989> but<00:06:10.534> I<00:06:10.630> think<00:06:10.855> we're<00:06:10.951> going<00:06:11.063> to<00:06:11.175> realize,<00:06:11.736> you<00:06:11.768> know,<00:06:11.913> there<00:06:12.057> were<00:06:12.137> other<00:06:12.313> countries<00:06:12.618> that<00:06:12.714> did<00:06:12.874> not<00:06:13.275> close<00:06:13.580> the<00:06:13.612> schools.
00:06:14.157 --> 00:06:16.193
The<00:06:14.237> UK,<00:06:14.638> for<00:06:14.782> instance,<00:06:15.279> left<00:06:15.423> their<00:06:15.519> schools<00:06:15.904> open.
00:06:16.946 --> 00:06:20.296
In<00:06:17.042> France,<00:06:17.844> absolutely<00:06:18.308> everything<00:06:18.645> was<00:06:18.725> shut<00:06:18.950> down<00:06:19.430> except<00:06:19.671> for<00:06:19.831> schools.
00:06:20.729 --> 00:06:27.653
The<00:06:20.873> one<00:06:21.114> thing<00:06:21.290> that<00:06:21.434> they<00:06:21.530> kept<00:06:21.771> open<00:06:22.011> was<00:06:22.107> schools<00:06:22.572> because<00:06:22.813> they<00:06:22.957> understood<00:06:23.294> that<00:06:23.454> that<00:06:23.614> was<00:06:23.774> the,<00:06:24.560> you<00:06:24.592> know,<00:06:24.688> most<00:06:25.041> critical<00:06:25.441> to<00:06:25.522> protect<00:06:26.419> and<00:06:26.499> continue<00:06:26.836> supporting<00:06:27.301> children.
00:06:27.782 --> 00:06:37.695
And<00:06:28.279> so<00:06:28.503> yeah,<00:06:28.647> I<00:06:28.904> think<00:06:29.128> we're<00:06:29.305> realizing<00:06:29.946> now<00:06:31.212> just<00:06:31.533> how<00:06:32.046> fundamental<00:06:33.328> something<00:06:33.649> as<00:06:33.794> basic<00:06:34.115> as<00:06:34.195> schooling<00:06:34.677> really<00:06:35.062> is<00:06:35.399> to<00:06:35.801> the<00:06:35.881> whole<00:06:36.202> way<00:06:36.363> that<00:06:36.443> we<00:06:36.604> function<00:06:36.941> as<00:06:37.085> a<00:06:37.101> society.
00:06:38.996 --> 00:06:49.545
Well,<00:06:39.092> what<00:06:39.205> do<00:06:39.237> you<00:06:39.333> think<00:06:39.558> we've<00:06:39.799> lost<00:06:40.136> to,<00:06:40.441> aside<00:06:40.858> from<00:06:41.163> like<00:06:42.047> women<00:06:42.384> and<00:06:42.544> parents<00:06:42.946> having<00:06:43.267> to<00:06:43.347> drop<00:06:43.652> out<00:06:43.748> of<00:06:43.829> the<00:06:43.909> workforce<00:06:45.113> because<00:06:46.061> of,<00:06:46.944> you<00:06:47.040> know,<00:06:47.281> there's<00:06:47.522> no—<00:06:47.666> who's<00:06:47.843> gonna<00:06:47.987> watch<00:06:48.164> their<00:06:48.308> kids,<00:06:49.352> right?
00:06:49.593 --> 00:06:55.774
That<00:06:49.689> was<00:06:49.850> like,<00:06:50.235> for<00:06:50.331> some<00:06:50.492> reason<00:06:50.636> that<00:06:50.717> was<00:06:50.877> never<00:06:51.134> part<00:06:51.375> of<00:06:51.439> the<00:06:51.536> conversation,<00:06:52.338> which<00:06:52.515> is<00:06:52.579> so<00:06:52.900> fascinating<00:06:54.024> that<00:06:54.169> was<00:06:54.345> never<00:06:54.811> part<00:06:55.084> of<00:06:55.148> the<00:06:55.228> conversation.
00:06:56.111 --> 00:07:05.520
You<00:06:56.176> have<00:06:56.417> working<00:06:56.834> parents<00:06:57.717> who<00:06:57.942> now<00:06:58.263> have<00:06:58.584> to<00:06:58.825> also<00:06:59.564> watch<00:06:59.869> their<00:06:59.965> kids<00:07:00.206> when,<00:07:00.527> when<00:07:00.687> the<00:07:00.848> plan<00:07:01.249> was<00:07:02.614> to<00:07:03.016> send<00:07:03.337> them<00:07:03.562> to<00:07:03.674> school,<00:07:04.605> which<00:07:04.782> is<00:07:04.926> where<00:07:05.039> they<00:07:05.119> need<00:07:05.344> to<00:07:05.424> be.
00:07:05.585 --> 00:07:07.238
So<00:07:06.066> take<00:07:06.307> that<00:07:06.468> aside<00:07:06.709> for<00:07:06.837> a<00:07:06.853> second.
00:07:08.057 --> 00:07:10.305
Um,<00:07:09.181> what<00:07:09.229> do<00:07:09.294> you<00:07:09.422> think<00:07:09.583> we've<00:07:09.759> lost?
00:07:10.562 --> 00:07:17.178
Like<00:07:10.739> a<00:07:10.803> whole<00:07:11.269> year<00:07:11.750> of<00:07:11.847> students<00:07:12.409> doing<00:07:12.730> all<00:07:13.035> of<00:07:13.212> this<00:07:14.014> via<00:07:14.335> Zoom<00:07:15.138> and<00:07:15.299> not<00:07:15.540> interacting<00:07:16.005> with<00:07:16.102> friends<00:07:16.407> and<00:07:16.503> not<00:07:16.728> growing.
00:07:17.226 --> 00:07:18.799
And,<00:07:17.627> and<00:07:17.707> let's<00:07:17.868> be<00:07:18.012> honest,<00:07:18.269> not<00:07:18.510> learning.
00:07:18.896 --> 00:07:20.325
Like<00:07:19.056> Mike,<00:07:19.377> I<00:07:19.458> have<00:07:19.795> 4<00:07:20.020> kids.
00:07:20.919 --> 00:07:24.307
They<00:07:21.641> did<00:07:21.802> not<00:07:22.107> learn<00:07:23.006> anything<00:07:23.729> this<00:07:23.953> past<00:07:24.226> year.
00:07:24.435 --> 00:07:25.142
I<00:07:24.531> can<00:07:24.676> tell<00:07:24.853> you<00:07:24.917> that<00:07:25.013> much.
00:07:25.479 --> 00:07:26.458
What<00:07:25.623> have<00:07:25.800> we<00:07:25.977> lost?
00:07:27.486 --> 00:07:29.718
Yeah,<00:07:27.984> well,<00:07:28.305> look,<00:07:28.530> I<00:07:28.610> mean,<00:07:28.867> it's<00:07:29.027> immeasurable.
00:07:30.055 --> 00:07:34.904
And<00:07:30.215> I<00:07:30.392> think<00:07:30.617> we're<00:07:30.874> going<00:07:30.986> to<00:07:31.693> spend<00:07:32.126> probably<00:07:32.335> the<00:07:32.399> rest<00:07:32.640> of<00:07:32.720> our<00:07:32.865> lives<00:07:33.186> taking<00:07:33.459> stock<00:07:33.844> of<00:07:33.989> what<00:07:34.149> we<00:07:34.551> lost.
00:07:34.968 --> 00:07:38.629
I<00:07:34.984> mean,<00:07:35.209> this<00:07:35.450> is<00:07:36.253> the<00:07:36.349> defining<00:07:36.959> experience<00:07:37.698> of<00:07:37.762> our<00:07:37.939> lifetimes.
00:07:39.207 --> 00:07:44.088
And<00:07:39.849> when<00:07:40.010> it's<00:07:40.138> not<00:07:40.267> going<00:07:40.572> away,<00:07:40.909> it's<00:07:41.230> going<00:07:41.311> to<00:07:41.391> be<00:07:41.551> part<00:07:41.808> of<00:07:41.889> our<00:07:42.033> lives<00:07:42.515> probably<00:07:42.836> for<00:07:43.157> the<00:07:43.237> rest<00:07:43.494> of<00:07:43.575> our<00:07:43.703> lives.
00:07:44.747 --> 00:07:55.874
I<00:07:44.923> think<00:07:45.148> what<00:07:45.309> I<00:07:45.550> worry<00:07:45.806> most<00:07:46.144> about<00:07:46.433> having<00:07:46.754> lost<00:07:47.252> is<00:07:47.396> that<00:07:47.557> I<00:07:47.733> think<00:07:48.054> we,<00:07:48.921> for<00:07:49.098> women<00:07:49.564> particularly,<00:07:51.089> the<00:07:51.924> setbacks<00:07:53.096> because<00:07:53.337> of<00:07:53.433> COVID<00:07:53.835> are<00:07:53.979> just<00:07:55.280> immeasurable.
00:07:56.805 --> 00:08:06.005
The<00:07:57.608> burdens<00:07:58.250> that,<00:07:59.037> you<00:07:59.117> know,<00:07:59.214> and<00:07:59.358> it's<00:07:59.519> not<00:07:59.695> to<00:07:59.776> discount<00:08:00.241> working<00:08:00.498> fathers,<00:08:01.140> and<00:08:01.285> I<00:08:01.317> know<00:08:01.478> many<00:08:01.783> of<00:08:01.863> them<00:08:02.425> really<00:08:02.746> have<00:08:02.971> stepped<00:08:03.292> up<00:08:03.388> and<00:08:03.934> have<00:08:04.030> been<00:08:04.191> great<00:08:04.496> equal<00:08:04.673> partners<00:08:05.219> in<00:08:05.540> all<00:08:05.716> of<00:08:05.797> this.
00:08:06.600 --> 00:08:13.873
But<00:08:07.226> there's<00:08:07.386> no<00:08:07.547> question<00:08:07.964> that<00:08:08.061> women<00:08:08.334> have<00:08:08.446> carried<00:08:08.928> the<00:08:09.008> bulk<00:08:09.233> of<00:08:09.329> the<00:08:09.409> burden<00:08:09.811> because<00:08:10.052> women<00:08:10.276> have<00:08:10.453> always<00:08:10.694> carried<00:08:10.999> the<00:08:11.095> bulk<00:08:11.272> of<00:08:11.400> the<00:08:11.497> burden<00:08:11.818> for<00:08:11.962> just<00:08:12.524> the<00:08:12.765> welfare<00:08:13.086> of<00:08:13.183> their<00:08:13.343> families.
00:08:14.612 --> 00:08:21.098
And<00:08:14.949> in<00:08:15.029> a<00:08:15.109> crisis,<00:08:16.153> you<00:08:16.217> know,<00:08:16.378> it's<00:08:16.619> the<00:08:16.699> women<00:08:16.956> that<00:08:17.983> are<00:08:18.080> there<00:08:18.385> on<00:08:18.481> the<00:08:18.786> front<00:08:19.027> line,<00:08:19.589> you<00:08:19.621> know,<00:08:19.782> sort<00:08:19.990> of<00:08:20.087> literally<00:08:20.408> and<00:08:20.569> figuratively.
00:08:22.014 --> 00:08:30.654
I<00:08:22.158> think<00:08:22.399> women<00:08:22.672> have<00:08:22.881> lost<00:08:23.218> a<00:08:23.282> lot,<00:08:24.358> not<00:08:24.583> just<00:08:24.904> in<00:08:25.049> terms<00:08:25.451> of<00:08:26.334> our<00:08:26.510> progress<00:08:27.538> in<00:08:28.582> climbing<00:08:29.080> the<00:08:29.947> corporate<00:08:30.204> ladders.
00:08:31.184 --> 00:08:37.319
So<00:08:31.345> many<00:08:31.569> women<00:08:31.891> who,<00:08:32.758> even<00:08:32.934> if<00:08:33.079> they<00:08:33.175> didn't<00:08:33.416> drop<00:08:33.721> out,<00:08:34.283> were<00:08:34.364> just<00:08:34.540> no<00:08:34.637> longer<00:08:35.167> able<00:08:35.359> to<00:08:35.504> put<00:08:35.729> in<00:08:35.825> the<00:08:35.906> same<00:08:36.146> kind<00:08:36.403> of<00:08:36.468> time<00:08:36.805> and<00:08:37.014> energy.
00:08:38.058 --> 00:08:47.918
I<00:08:38.074> think<00:08:38.298> there's<00:08:38.716> a<00:08:38.780> whole<00:08:39.117> piece<00:08:39.519> of<00:08:39.615> this,<00:08:39.985> which<00:08:40.226> is<00:08:41.430> what<00:08:41.848> will<00:08:41.992> continue<00:08:42.490> to<00:08:42.570> be<00:08:42.731> in<00:08:42.876> terms<00:08:43.197> of<00:08:44.096> women<00:08:44.417> just<00:08:44.819> not<00:08:45.301> wanting<00:08:45.686> to<00:08:45.766> go<00:08:45.879> back<00:08:46.425> under<00:08:46.650> the<00:08:46.730> same<00:08:47.051> kinds<00:08:47.388> of<00:08:47.469> terms.
00:08:48.272 --> 00:08:53.192
And<00:08:48.416> whether<00:08:48.672> companies<00:08:49.137> are<00:08:49.169> going<00:08:49.265> to<00:08:49.458> allow<00:08:49.874> them<00:08:50.676> to<00:08:50.916> succeed<00:08:52.198> in<00:08:52.295> a<00:08:52.359> very<00:08:52.599> different<00:08:52.840> model.
00:08:53.865 --> 00:09:05.550
And<00:08:53.962> I<00:08:54.106> think<00:08:54.282> the<00:08:54.362> mental<00:08:54.763> and<00:08:54.859> emotional<00:08:55.404> toll<00:08:57.087> probably<00:08:57.552> has<00:08:57.953> continued<00:08:58.530> to<00:08:58.626> be<00:08:58.850> underappreciated,<00:09:01.094> just<00:09:01.415> how<00:09:01.719> heavy<00:09:01.976> a<00:09:01.992> load<00:09:03.258> people<00:09:03.498> are<00:09:03.643> carrying,<00:09:04.124> women<00:09:04.316> are<00:09:04.380> carrying,<00:09:04.765> kids<00:09:04.989> have<00:09:05.037> been<00:09:05.246> carrying.
00:09:06.287 --> 00:09:11.689
And<00:09:07.746> the<00:09:07.890> thing<00:09:08.051> that<00:09:08.147> I<00:09:08.291> hope<00:09:08.515> will<00:09:08.612> come<00:09:08.772> out<00:09:08.964> of<00:09:09.092> this,<00:09:09.589> and<00:09:10.150> I<00:09:10.311> am<00:09:10.455> optimistic<00:09:11.048> about<00:09:11.352> some<00:09:11.513> of<00:09:11.657> it.
00:09:11.753 --> 00:09:21.137
I<00:09:11.769> mean,<00:09:12.138> to<00:09:12.218> your<00:09:12.378> point,<00:09:12.635> Clint,<00:09:13.692> it's<00:09:13.997> hard<00:09:14.221> to<00:09:14.318> ever<00:09:14.478> say<00:09:14.638> that<00:09:14.798> there<00:09:14.959> are<00:09:15.103> good<00:09:15.263> things<00:09:15.584> that<00:09:15.664> came<00:09:15.904> out<00:09:16.065> of<00:09:16.706> this<00:09:16.802> terrible<00:09:17.364> ordeal,<00:09:17.846> which<00:09:17.990> has<00:09:18.424> taken<00:09:18.713> the<00:09:18.809> lives<00:09:19.146> of<00:09:19.275> hundreds<00:09:19.612> of<00:09:19.676> thousands<00:09:20.029> of<00:09:20.093> people<00:09:20.398> and<00:09:20.495> continues<00:09:21.040> to.
00:09:21.939 --> 00:09:27.285
On<00:09:22.004> the<00:09:22.164> other<00:09:22.325> hand,<00:09:22.501> I<00:09:22.582> do<00:09:22.726> think<00:09:22.887> there's<00:09:23.063> a<00:09:23.143> bit<00:09:23.304> of<00:09:23.384> a<00:09:23.464> reset<00:09:23.946> that's<00:09:24.107> happening<00:09:24.412> that<00:09:24.572> could<00:09:24.749> be<00:09:24.829> positive<00:09:25.616> if<00:09:25.792> we<00:09:26.113> are<00:09:26.515> willing<00:09:26.820> to<00:09:26.900> commit<00:09:27.076> to<00:09:27.237> it.
00:09:28.200 --> 00:09:39.485
No<00:09:28.441> one<00:09:28.666> I<00:09:28.762> know—<00:09:29.244> and<00:09:29.388> this<00:09:29.565> is<00:09:29.709> obviously<00:09:30.046> inside<00:09:30.271> the<00:09:30.351> professional<00:09:30.833> workforce,<00:09:31.250> and<00:09:31.330> this<00:09:31.571> is<00:09:31.619> co.com,<00:09:32.117> so<00:09:32.213> it<00:09:32.278> makes<00:09:32.438> sense<00:09:32.599> for<00:09:32.695> us<00:09:32.727> to<00:09:32.839> talk<00:09:32.952> about<00:09:33.096> this—<00:09:33.562> literally<00:09:33.899> no<00:09:34.140> one<00:09:34.300> I<00:09:34.381> know<00:09:35.263> thinks<00:09:35.504> they're<00:09:35.665> going<00:09:35.906> back<00:09:36.146> to<00:09:36.291> full-time,<00:09:36.885> 9-to-5,<00:09:37.591> 5-days-a-week<00:09:38.314> work<00:09:39.196> ever.

There's<00:10:13.507> no<00:10:13.668> money<00:10:13.908> in<00:10:14.004> the<00:10:14.149> world<00:10:14.389> that<00:10:14.485> would<00:10:14.630> make<00:10:14.790> it<00:10:14.934> worth<00:10:15.111> it<00:10:15.191> to<00:10:15.287> them.
00:10:15.817 --> 00:10:24.495
To<00:10:15.913> get<00:10:16.058> back<00:10:16.235> on<00:10:16.332> the<00:10:16.412> 5:00<00:10:16.863> AM<00:10:17.024> train<00:10:17.282> every<00:10:17.443> day<00:10:18.183> or<00:10:18.570> get<00:10:18.747> in<00:10:18.811> the<00:10:18.892> car<00:10:19.198> and<00:10:19.294> do<00:10:19.439> a<00:10:19.455> 2-hour<00:10:19.842> commute<00:10:20.180> every<00:10:20.357> day<00:10:21.210> and<00:10:21.371> miss<00:10:21.854> the<00:10:21.886> stuff<00:10:22.337> that<00:10:22.450> they've<00:10:22.675> now<00:10:22.852> come<00:10:23.303> to<00:10:24.124> appreciate.
00:10:24.543 --> 00:10:26.110
So<00:10:24.833> I<00:10:24.865> think<00:10:25.010> there's<00:10:25.187> a<00:10:25.300> big<00:10:25.413> reset<00:10:25.737> that's<00:10:25.883> happening.
00:10:26.208 --> 00:10:43.917
I<00:10:26.305> think<00:10:26.467> CEOs<00:10:27.035> that<00:10:27.343> think<00:10:28.170> that<00:10:28.251> there's<00:10:28.511> going<00:10:28.656> to<00:10:28.819> be<00:10:29.370> a<00:10:29.532> return<00:10:30.586> to<00:10:31.397> the<00:10:31.430> sort<00:10:31.657> of—<00:10:31.916> I'm<00:10:32.127> now<00:10:32.305> going<00:10:32.387> to<00:10:32.468> call<00:10:32.646> it<00:10:32.792> old<00:10:32.953> school—<00:10:35.030> jacket<00:10:35.369> on<00:10:35.449> the<00:10:35.610> back<00:10:35.868> of<00:10:35.997> your<00:10:36.158> chair,<00:10:37.543> 40<00:10:37.946> to<00:10:38.091> 50<00:10:38.574> hours,<00:10:39.170> 60<00:10:39.621> hours<00:10:39.943> a<00:10:40.023> week,<00:10:40.346> and<00:10:40.442> that<00:10:40.587> that<00:10:40.780> is<00:10:40.925> going<00:10:41.038> to<00:10:41.086> be<00:10:41.151> your<00:10:41.264> sign<00:10:41.505> of<00:10:41.570> commitment<00:10:41.877> of<00:10:41.965> job<00:10:42.160> there,<00:10:42.672> that<00:10:42.778> is—<00:10:42.940> That<00:10:42.988> is<00:10:43.116> a<00:10:43.292> thing<00:10:43.452> of<00:10:43.533> the<00:10:43.613> past.
00:10:44.174 --> 00:10:45.312
It's<00:10:44.334> never<00:10:44.735> coming<00:10:44.975> back.
00:10:46.097 --> 00:10:47.572
You<00:10:46.258> can't<00:10:46.498> put<00:10:46.739> that<00:10:46.899> back<00:10:47.075> in<00:10:47.204> the<00:10:47.284> bottle.
00:10:48.021 --> 00:10:56.068
And<00:10:48.101> millennials<00:10:48.598> had<00:10:48.726> already<00:10:48.999> said<00:10:49.448> for<00:10:49.608> years<00:10:50.089> that<00:10:50.185> this<00:10:50.329> was<00:10:50.506> ridiculous<00:10:51.548> and<00:10:51.612> had<00:10:51.708> been<00:10:51.932> challenging<00:10:52.413> CEOs,<00:10:53.167> certainly<00:10:53.696> of<00:10:53.792> my<00:10:54.016> generation<00:10:54.513> and<00:10:54.738> older,<00:10:55.154> to<00:10:55.299> say,<00:10:55.555> what<00:10:55.651> do<00:10:55.699> you<00:10:55.796> mean?
00:10:56.261 --> 00:10:57.383
This<00:10:56.309> doesn't<00:10:56.581> even<00:10:56.677> make<00:10:56.838> any<00:10:56.998> sense.
00:10:58.601 --> 00:10:59.451
There's<00:10:58.825> no<00:10:59.002> reason<00:10:59.242> for<00:10:59.322> this.
00:10:59.707 --> 00:11:01.855
So<00:10:59.964> I<00:11:00.028> think<00:11:00.124> that's<00:11:00.685> a<00:11:00.749> really<00:11:00.989> important<00:11:01.342> reset.
00:11:02.368 --> 00:11:11.746
And<00:11:02.528> we're<00:11:02.608> going<00:11:02.721> to<00:11:02.849> have<00:11:03.073> to<00:11:03.234> really<00:11:03.554> relearn<00:11:04.195> how<00:11:04.436> we<00:11:04.612> build<00:11:04.837> relationships<00:11:05.654> in<00:11:05.734> the<00:11:05.815> workplace<00:11:06.360> because<00:11:06.616> of<00:11:06.696> that<00:11:07.017> and<00:11:07.562> when<00:11:07.802> it<00:11:07.898> is<00:11:08.059> the<00:11:08.123> right<00:11:08.363> time<00:11:08.700> to—<00:11:09.405> how<00:11:09.646> you<00:11:09.742> engage<00:11:10.223> and<00:11:10.303> how<00:11:10.463> you<00:11:10.559> engage<00:11:10.848> in<00:11:10.944> person<00:11:11.265> and<00:11:11.345> when<00:11:11.505> you<00:11:11.601> don't.
00:11:11.842 --> 00:11:12.740
So<00:11:12.002> I<00:11:12.130> think<00:11:12.227> that's<00:11:12.483> a<00:11:12.547> win.
00:11:13.269 --> 00:11:14.727
And<00:11:13.413> I<00:11:13.653> also—<00:11:13.910> I'm<00:11:14.214> really<00:11:14.455> hopeful.
00:11:14.840 --> 00:11:17.115
And<00:11:14.920> you<00:11:14.984> know,<00:11:15.256> I<00:11:15.352> spend<00:11:15.529> a<00:11:15.593> lot<00:11:15.769> of<00:11:15.833> time<00:11:16.058> working<00:11:16.378> on<00:11:16.474> politics.
00:11:17.981 --> 00:11:29.456
I'm<00:11:18.093> really<00:11:18.397> hopeful<00:11:18.942> that<00:11:19.599> maybe<00:11:20.000> we<00:11:20.144> will<00:11:20.240> finally<00:11:20.721> have<00:11:20.978> the<00:11:21.106> collective<00:11:22.067> will<00:11:23.045> to<00:11:23.285> invest<00:11:24.071> in<00:11:24.167> the<00:11:24.247> critical<00:11:24.904> infrastructure,<00:11:25.834> 'cause<00:11:26.010> it<00:11:26.234> is<00:11:26.715> infrastructure,<00:11:28.238> that<00:11:28.414> enables<00:11:28.815> people<00:11:29.055> to<00:11:29.199> work.
00:11:30.001 --> 00:11:32.389
And<00:11:30.097> that<00:11:30.337> is<00:11:30.513> affordable<00:11:30.978> childcare<00:11:31.619> and<00:11:31.699> paid<00:11:31.956> leave.
00:11:32.966 --> 00:11:35.995
And<00:11:33.927> no<00:11:34.809> administration<00:11:35.450> is<00:11:35.546> perfect.
00:11:36.171 --> 00:11:44.553
I<00:11:36.251> have<00:11:36.411> my<00:11:36.587> issues<00:11:36.972> with<00:11:37.084> this<00:11:37.309> one<00:11:37.549> for<00:11:37.709> sure,<00:11:38.094> but<00:11:38.254> I<00:11:38.350> do<00:11:38.511> think<00:11:38.831> they<00:11:39.488> seem<00:11:39.713> to<00:11:39.793> be<00:11:39.937> pretty<00:11:40.113> committed<00:11:40.514> to<00:11:40.594> trying<00:11:40.851> to<00:11:40.979> get<00:11:41.315> at<00:11:41.395> least<00:11:41.620> paid<00:11:41.940> leave<00:11:42.982> into<00:11:43.495> the<00:11:43.623> reconciliation<00:11:44.440> bill.
00:11:45.867 --> 00:11:47.807
If<00:11:46.043> that<00:11:46.284> passes,<00:11:46.941> it's<00:11:47.149> historic.
00:11:47.887 --> 00:11:51.510
We<00:11:48.031> are<00:11:48.127> one<00:11:48.272> of<00:11:48.352> the<00:11:48.512> only<00:11:48.624> nations<00:11:49.073> in<00:11:49.153> the<00:11:49.330> world<00:11:49.730> that<00:11:49.875> does<00:11:50.035> not<00:11:50.195> have<00:11:50.388> guaranteed<00:11:50.852> paid<00:11:51.093> leave.
00:11:52.039 --> 00:11:57.537
These<00:11:52.215> are<00:11:52.600> critical<00:11:53.578> to<00:11:53.738> the<00:11:53.818> functioning<00:11:54.395> of<00:11:54.475> our<00:11:54.636> society<00:11:55.886> and<00:11:56.303> wildly<00:11:56.623> popular,<00:11:57.104> by<00:11:57.264> the<00:11:57.345> way.
00:11:58.130 --> 00:12:00.967
And<00:11:58.627> if<00:11:58.707> we<00:11:58.851> can't<00:11:59.012> get<00:11:59.108> it<00:11:59.172> done<00:11:59.348> now,<00:11:59.749> I<00:11:59.845> don't<00:11:59.974> know<00:12:00.070> when<00:12:00.214> we're<00:12:00.294> going<00:12:00.390> to<00:12:00.471> get<00:12:00.615> it<00:12:00.647> done.
00:12:01.432 --> 00:12:12.108
Even<00:12:01.657> with<00:12:01.833> a<00:12:01.849> very<00:12:02.074> closely<00:12:02.474> divided<00:12:02.859> House<00:12:03.035> and<00:12:03.180> Senate,<00:12:03.532> this<00:12:04.462> is<00:12:04.718> a<00:12:04.767> moment<00:12:05.344> in<00:12:05.440> time<00:12:06.241> where<00:12:06.322> I<00:12:06.466> think<00:12:06.642> Americans,<00:12:07.684> you<00:12:07.764> know,<00:12:07.989> understand<00:12:08.790> how<00:12:08.966> critical<00:12:09.447> this<00:12:09.672> stuff<00:12:09.864> is<00:12:10.089> and<00:12:10.313> why<00:12:10.569> it<00:12:10.794> is<00:12:10.954> truly<00:12:11.371> infrastructure.
00:12:12.573 --> 00:12:17.831
That<00:12:12.734> for<00:12:12.910> our<00:12:13.134> economy<00:12:13.615> and<00:12:13.679> our<00:12:13.776> society<00:12:14.256> to<00:12:14.433> survive,<00:12:15.122> to<00:12:15.218> thrive,<00:12:15.715> we<00:12:15.795> have<00:12:15.956> to<00:12:16.036> see<00:12:16.260> infrastructure<00:12:16.821> as<00:12:16.950> more<00:12:17.046> than<00:12:17.206> roads<00:12:17.382> and<00:12:17.462> bridges.
00:12:18.424 --> 00:12:24.404
It<00:12:18.569> is<00:12:18.969> all<00:12:19.146> of<00:12:19.226> the<00:12:19.386> things<00:12:19.787> that<00:12:19.947> enable<00:12:20.348> people<00:12:20.749> to<00:12:21.133> live<00:12:21.951> and<00:12:22.111> work<00:12:22.592> and<00:12:22.752> function<00:12:23.153> and<00:12:23.233> contribute<00:12:23.698> to<00:12:23.730> society.
00:12:24.836 --> 00:12:29.533
And<00:12:24.916> that<00:12:25.173> is<00:12:25.718> a<00:12:25.734> much<00:12:25.958> bigger<00:12:26.279> definition<00:12:27.385> than<00:12:27.481> I<00:12:27.561> think<00:12:27.786> we're<00:12:27.882> traditionally<00:12:28.828> used<00:12:28.988> to<00:12:29.084> thinking<00:12:29.405> of.
00:12:30.607 --> 00:12:37.532
It's<00:12:30.735> so<00:12:30.832> fascinating<00:12:31.649> to<00:12:31.761> me<00:12:32.034> how<00:12:32.290> you<00:12:32.691> can,<00:12:33.332> you<00:12:33.412> know,<00:12:33.557> be<00:12:33.653> so<00:12:33.829> successful<00:12:34.262> in<00:12:34.294> the<00:12:34.374> business<00:12:34.679> world<00:12:35.015> and<00:12:35.176> you<00:12:35.336> go<00:12:35.496> into<00:12:35.673> the<00:12:36.218> political<00:12:36.602> world<00:12:36.795> and<00:12:36.923> you<00:12:37.019> understand<00:12:37.500> it.
00:12:37.580 --> 00:12:40.594
Like,<00:12:37.741> I<00:12:37.773> don't<00:12:37.901> even<00:12:38.125> think<00:12:38.286> I<00:12:38.318> know<00:12:38.606> what<00:12:39.408> reconciliation<00:12:40.370> is.
00:12:41.091 --> 00:12:47.295
Ah,<00:12:42.293> to<00:12:42.453> give<00:12:43.431> you,<00:12:44.056> to<00:12:44.297> give<00:12:44.457> you<00:12:44.874> a<00:12:45.050> sense<00:12:45.419> for<00:12:45.499> like,<00:12:45.740> I<00:12:45.916> don't<00:12:46.092> know<00:12:46.317> that<00:12:46.557> world<00:12:47.022> at<00:12:47.263> all.
00:12:47.359 --> 00:12:56.448
I<00:12:47.439> know<00:12:47.519> most<00:12:47.840> Americans<00:12:48.465> don't<00:12:49.106> I<00:12:49.138> mean,<00:12:49.587> so<00:12:49.907> look,<00:12:50.084> so<00:12:50.244> the<00:12:50.324> president<00:12:50.885> has<00:12:51.142> this<00:12:51.366> Build<00:12:51.607> Back<00:12:51.847> Better<00:12:52.088> plan,<00:12:52.633> which<00:12:52.809> is<00:12:52.985> essentially<00:12:53.450> the<00:12:53.594> budget<00:12:53.835> and<00:12:54.011> the<00:12:54.091> priorities<00:12:54.893> for<00:12:55.935> the<00:12:56.015> nation.
00:12:56.720 --> 00:13:11.436
And<00:12:57.201> part<00:12:57.394> of<00:12:57.474> the<00:12:57.602> congressional<00:12:58.099> process<00:12:58.676> is<00:12:58.820> that<00:12:58.916> there's<00:12:59.093> something<00:12:59.285> called<00:12:59.477> reconciliation,<00:13:00.263> which<00:13:00.439> is<00:13:00.519> essentially<00:13:01.064> they<00:13:02.026> take<00:13:02.267> a<00:13:02.331> whole<00:13:02.427> bunch<00:13:02.603> of<00:13:02.667> pieces<00:13:02.988> of<00:13:03.068> bills<00:13:03.854> and<00:13:03.934> try<00:13:04.030> to<00:13:04.110> put<00:13:04.271> them<00:13:04.431> together<00:13:05.617> and<00:13:05.777> reconcile<00:13:06.579> literally<00:13:07.076> what<00:13:07.300> both<00:13:07.589> sides<00:13:07.877> want<00:13:08.518> and<00:13:08.663> come<00:13:08.999> to<00:13:09.144> some<00:13:09.737> agreement<00:13:10.186> with<00:13:10.298> a<00:13:10.442> very<00:13:10.843> big<00:13:11.228> bill.
00:13:11.789 --> 00:13:13.504
And<00:13:11.885> in<00:13:11.965> this<00:13:12.141> case,<00:13:12.526> it<00:13:12.606> covers<00:13:12.927> infrastructure.
00:13:13.568 --> 00:13:16.726
It<00:13:13.712> covers<00:13:13.969> a<00:13:14.033> whole<00:13:14.145> bunch<00:13:14.386> of<00:13:14.514> priorities<00:13:15.155> for<00:13:15.267> the<00:13:15.492> president<00:13:15.989> and<00:13:16.133> for<00:13:16.277> the<00:13:16.309> nation.
00:13:17.239 --> 00:13:31.157
But<00:13:17.656> the<00:13:18.040> reconciliation,<00:13:18.842> it's<00:13:19.082> a<00:13:19.163> procedural<00:13:19.740> process,<00:13:20.221> but<00:13:20.365> it<00:13:20.461> enables<00:13:20.750> people<00:13:20.846> as<00:13:20.926> members<00:13:21.199> of<00:13:21.263> Congress<00:13:21.648> to<00:13:21.808> each<00:13:22.145> to<00:13:22.289> put<00:13:22.465> in<00:13:22.610> lots<00:13:22.802> of<00:13:22.850> different<00:13:23.107> stuff<00:13:23.829> and<00:13:23.909> to<00:13:24.069> work<00:13:24.310> through<00:13:24.534> a<00:13:24.614> whole<00:13:24.791> bunch<00:13:24.967> of<00:13:25.111> things<00:13:25.977> and<00:13:26.459> reconcile<00:13:27.437> the<00:13:27.517> priorities<00:13:28.158> for<00:13:28.303> both<00:13:28.479> parties<00:13:29.040> in<00:13:29.185> order<00:13:29.425> to<00:13:29.506> get<00:13:29.666> to<00:13:29.762> a<00:13:29.778> majority<00:13:30.243> in<00:13:30.388> order<00:13:30.580> to<00:13:30.708> pass<00:13:30.965> the<00:13:31.045> bill.
00:13:31.670 --> 00:13:32.761
And<00:13:31.751> they're<00:13:32.007> very<00:13:32.328> close.
00:13:33.034 --> 00:13:37.347
And,<00:13:33.611> you<00:13:33.707> know,<00:13:34.317> what<00:13:34.653> Americans<00:13:35.118> don't<00:13:35.375> know<00:13:35.616> is<00:13:35.760> that,<00:13:36.016> you<00:13:36.113> know,<00:13:36.401> I<00:13:36.498> mentioned<00:13:36.882> paid<00:13:37.123> leave.
00:13:37.700 --> 00:13:58.639
This<00:13:37.925> is<00:13:38.037> a<00:13:38.326> really<00:13:39.288> groundbreaking<00:13:40.090> piece<00:13:40.346> of<00:13:40.410> the<00:13:40.491> reconciliation<00:13:41.228> bill,<00:13:41.790> which<00:13:42.014> basically<00:13:42.351> sets<00:13:44.099> up<00:13:44.837> an<00:13:45.061> agency<00:13:45.478> inside<00:13:45.863> Social<00:13:46.104> Security<00:13:47.002> which<00:13:47.226> would<00:13:47.338> administer<00:13:48.124> paid<00:13:48.444> leave<00:13:49.246> for<00:13:49.566> hundreds<00:13:49.967> of<00:13:50.047> millions<00:13:50.352> of<00:13:50.384> Americans<00:13:51.330> and<00:13:51.410> make<00:13:51.586> it<00:13:51.650> possible<00:13:52.147> for<00:13:52.292> both<00:13:52.516> men<00:13:52.756> and<00:13:52.853> women<00:13:53.878> to<00:13:54.055> receive—<00:13:54.840> there's<00:13:55.818> a<00:13:55.962> payroll<00:13:56.299> tax<00:13:56.620> essentially<00:13:57.101> that's<00:13:57.742> in<00:13:57.822> the<00:13:57.966> current<00:13:58.383> version.
00:13:58.688 --> 00:13:59.457
We'll<00:13:58.784> see<00:13:58.944> how<00:13:59.104> it<00:13:59.249> ends.
00:13:59.505 --> 00:14:08.177
But<00:14:00.066> there's<00:14:00.403> a<00:14:00.467> small<00:14:00.787> payroll<00:14:01.172> tax<00:14:01.829> that<00:14:01.910> then<00:14:02.150> would<00:14:02.326> fund<00:14:03.336> 12<00:14:03.673> weeks<00:14:03.913> of<00:14:04.058> leave,<00:14:04.795> paid<00:14:05.100> leave<00:14:05.741> for<00:14:05.837> folks<00:14:06.077> that<00:14:06.222> don't<00:14:06.398> get<00:14:06.558> it<00:14:06.703> already<00:14:07.344> through<00:14:07.680> their<00:14:07.761> employer.
00:14:08.306 --> 00:14:09.171
I<00:14:08.386> mean,<00:14:08.466> this<00:14:08.578> is<00:14:08.722> groundbreaking.
00:14:09.604 --> 00:14:16.561
Most,<00:14:10.165> I'm<00:14:10.325> sure,<00:14:10.566> of<00:14:10.710> your<00:14:10.870> listeners<00:14:11.608> don't<00:14:11.784> think<00:14:11.928> about<00:14:12.105> this<00:14:12.329> because<00:14:12.554> if<00:14:12.634> you<00:14:12.730> work<00:14:12.954> for<00:14:13.051> a<00:14:13.067> big<00:14:13.275> company,<00:14:13.612> I<00:14:13.628> mean,<00:14:13.772> every<00:14:14.012> big<00:14:14.157> company<00:14:14.557> offers<00:14:14.894> paid<00:14:15.151> leave<00:14:15.455> for<00:14:15.856> the<00:14:15.936> most<00:14:16.241> part.
00:14:16.962 --> 00:14:33.168
But<00:14:17.138> if<00:14:17.283> you're<00:14:17.395> an<00:14:17.603> hourly<00:14:18.004> worker,<00:14:18.741> if<00:14:18.870> you<00:14:19.847> do<00:14:20.088> work<00:14:20.248> in<00:14:20.328> a<00:14:20.408> company<00:14:20.825> that<00:14:21.002> is<00:14:21.146> less<00:14:21.386> than<00:14:21.547> 50<00:14:21.867> people,<00:14:22.188> which<00:14:22.428> is<00:14:22.845> tens<00:14:23.166> of<00:14:23.246> millions<00:14:23.566> of<00:14:23.630> people,<00:14:24.656> you're<00:14:24.769> not<00:14:25.073> even<00:14:25.378> obligated<00:14:25.795> to<00:14:26.019> offer<00:14:26.356> even<00:14:26.740> any<00:14:27.237> protected<00:14:27.878> leave<00:14:28.199> for<00:14:28.391> the<00:14:28.520> birth<00:14:28.776> or<00:14:28.856> death<00:14:29.097> of<00:14:29.225> a<00:14:29.241> child—<00:14:29.882> or<00:14:29.962> excuse<00:14:30.203> me,<00:14:30.299> a<00:14:30.363> birth<00:14:30.908> or<00:14:31.485> care<00:14:31.790> for<00:14:31.950> a<00:14:32.030> child,<00:14:32.431> illness<00:14:32.704> of<00:14:32.784> a<00:14:32.848> child.
00:14:33.633 --> 00:14:40.013
And<00:14:34.050> that<00:14:34.371> means<00:14:34.852> that<00:14:35.252> tens<00:14:35.589> of<00:14:35.717> millions<00:14:35.990> of<00:14:36.070> Americans—<00:14:36.775> only<00:14:37.016> about<00:14:37.400> 30%<00:14:37.961> of<00:14:38.202> all<00:14:38.314> Americans<00:14:38.843> have<00:14:39.019> any<00:14:39.244> paid<00:14:39.500> leave<00:14:39.725> right<00:14:39.901> now.
00:14:40.687 --> 00:14:42.241
And<00:14:40.847> it's<00:14:41.007> just<00:14:41.183> a<00:14:41.264> massive<00:14:41.889> drag.
00:14:42.306 --> 00:14:49.070
I<00:14:42.322> mean,<00:14:42.466> can<00:14:42.626> you<00:14:42.690> imagine<00:14:43.027> just<00:14:43.251> going<00:14:43.428> without<00:14:43.748> salary<00:14:44.149> for<00:14:44.309> 12<00:14:44.550> weeks<00:14:44.854> when<00:14:44.935> you<00:14:44.967> have<00:14:45.095> a<00:14:45.127> newborn<00:14:45.912> just<00:14:46.153> in<00:14:46.297> order<00:14:46.538> to<00:14:46.858> be<00:14:47.034> there<00:14:47.339> for<00:14:47.451> the<00:14:47.515> most<00:14:47.740> critical<00:14:48.076> days<00:14:48.397> of<00:14:48.477> the<00:14:48.621> child's<00:14:48.958> life?
00:14:49.679 --> 00:14:51.371
It's<00:14:49.840> inconscionable<00:14:50.545> that<00:14:50.641> we've<00:14:50.770> never<00:14:50.965> done<00:14:51.127> this.
00:14:51.452 --> 00:14:57.676
And<00:14:51.598> so,<00:14:51.858> if<00:14:51.956> they<00:14:52.102> pass<00:14:52.427> this,<00:14:53.240> it's<00:14:53.402> truly<00:14:54.133> remarkably<00:14:54.702> groundbreaking<00:14:55.498> and<00:14:55.612> it<00:14:55.742> will<00:14:55.905> change<00:14:56.408> families'<00:14:56.880> lives<00:14:57.286> permanently.
00:15:00.120 --> 00:15:02.229
So,<00:15:00.426> are<00:15:00.587> they—<00:15:00.909> you<00:15:01.070> understand<00:15:01.472> the<00:15:01.553> political<00:15:01.939> world.
00:15:02.503 --> 00:15:03.582
And<00:15:02.664> so,<00:15:02.744> I<00:15:02.825> have<00:15:02.922> two<00:15:03.083> questions<00:15:03.453> for<00:15:03.501> you.
00:15:03.711 --> 00:15:11.593
One<00:15:03.968> is<00:15:04.113> like,<00:15:04.355> what<00:15:04.596> motivated<00:15:05.176> you<00:15:05.337> to<00:15:05.900> get<00:15:06.126> into<00:15:06.303> politics<00:15:06.947> and<00:15:08.058> try<00:15:08.235> to<00:15:08.332> make<00:15:08.541> a<00:15:08.622> difference<00:15:08.960> in<00:15:09.105> that<00:15:09.250> space<00:15:10.316> and<00:15:10.882> really<00:15:11.124> roll<00:15:11.286> up<00:15:11.367> your<00:15:11.448> sleeves?
00:15:11.690 --> 00:15:15.456
Because<00:15:12.029> you<00:15:12.110> have<00:15:12.337> this<00:15:13.306> initiative,<00:15:13.888> which<00:15:14.114> All<00:15:14.211> In<00:15:14.308> Together,<00:15:14.615> which<00:15:14.777> I<00:15:14.858> want<00:15:15.020> to<00:15:15.084> talk<00:15:15.262> about.
00:15:16.005 --> 00:15:18.268
So,<00:15:16.070> that's<00:15:16.296> my<00:15:16.393> first<00:15:16.700> question<00:15:17.008> is<00:15:17.105> like,<00:15:17.282> what<00:15:17.444> kind<00:15:17.606> of<00:15:17.686> drove<00:15:17.929> you<00:15:17.993> to<00:15:18.090> do<00:15:18.171> that?
00:15:18.317 --> 00:15:21.770
My<00:15:18.414> second<00:15:18.721> question<00:15:19.125> is,<00:15:19.589> Are<00:15:19.772> they<00:15:20.022> as<00:15:20.188> incompetent<00:15:21.004> as<00:15:21.171> they<00:15:21.354> seem?
00:15:25.016 --> 00:15:25.869
That's<00:15:25.193> a<00:15:25.257> leading<00:15:25.563> question.
00:15:27.367 --> 00:15:31.103
So,<00:15:28.317> and<00:15:28.704> actually,<00:15:29.589> I<00:15:29.670> can<00:15:29.847> answer<00:15:30.088> both<00:15:30.249> questions<00:15:30.652> in<00:15:30.716> the<00:15:30.878> same<00:15:31.039> way.
00:15:31.151 --> 00:15:33.406
So<00:15:31.377> look,<00:15:31.618> so<00:15:32.343> I<00:15:32.488> grew<00:15:32.568> up<00:15:32.665> in<00:15:32.746> Washington,<00:15:33.148> DC.
00:15:33.486 --> 00:15:35.826
So<00:15:33.696> in<00:15:33.792> some<00:15:34.018> ways,<00:15:34.438> it's<00:15:34.842> like<00:15:35.019> a<00:15:35.084> one-industry<00:15:35.649> town.
00:15:35.891 --> 00:15:38.134
It's<00:15:35.988> like<00:15:36.117> growing<00:15:36.311> up<00:15:36.391> in<00:15:36.520> Hollywood,<00:15:36.843> you're<00:15:36.940> going<00:15:37.021> to<00:15:37.101> wind<00:15:37.279> up<00:15:37.360> in<00:15:37.489> the<00:15:37.586> film<00:15:37.747> business.
00:15:38.409 --> 00:15:40.475
If<00:15:38.457> you<00:15:38.538> grow<00:15:38.619> up<00:15:38.716> in<00:15:38.861> Washington,<00:15:39.264> you're<00:15:39.345> going<00:15:39.426> to<00:15:39.506> wind<00:15:39.684> up<00:15:39.765> doing<00:15:39.926> something<00:15:40.168> political.
00:15:41.413 --> 00:15:47.519
But<00:15:41.899> my<00:15:42.045> parents<00:15:42.919> were<00:15:43.016> both<00:15:43.486> real<00:15:43.891> sort<00:15:44.004> of<00:15:44.134> social<00:15:44.393> justice<00:15:44.798> warriors<00:15:45.203> in<00:15:45.348> their<00:15:45.510> own<00:15:45.688> way,<00:15:46.482> committed<00:15:46.757> to<00:15:46.903> public<00:15:47.130> service.
00:15:48.197 --> 00:15:50.107
And<00:15:48.454> spent<00:15:48.679> their<00:15:48.839> lives<00:15:49.658> in<00:15:49.802> service.
00:15:50.203 --> 00:15:55.211
And<00:15:50.364> so<00:15:50.540> many<00:15:50.781> of<00:15:50.861> the<00:15:50.942> families<00:15:51.327> that<00:15:51.407> I<00:15:51.487> grew<00:15:51.568> up<00:15:51.728> with,<00:15:51.888> their<00:15:51.985> parents<00:15:52.370> were<00:15:52.546> public<00:15:52.803> servants<00:15:53.285> and,<00:15:53.670> you<00:15:53.814> know,<00:15:53.975> worked<00:15:54.216> in<00:15:54.312> various<00:15:54.697> administrations.
00:15:55.291 --> 00:16:02.416
And<00:15:55.419> so<00:15:55.660> I've<00:15:55.820> always<00:15:56.222> seen<00:15:57.201> government<00:15:57.618> and<00:15:57.682> the<00:15:57.827> political<00:15:58.164> process<00:15:58.725> as<00:15:58.870> meaningful,<00:15:59.752> as<00:15:59.833> something<00:16:00.170> that<00:16:00.394> actually<00:16:00.587> matters<00:16:00.988> and<00:16:01.084> makes<00:16:01.229> a<00:16:01.293> difference<00:16:01.614> in<00:16:01.694> people's<00:16:02.015> lives.
00:16:03.123 --> 00:16:16.989
What<00:16:03.604> drove<00:16:03.957> me<00:16:04.102> to<00:16:04.246> politics<00:16:04.808> really<00:16:05.145> was<00:16:05.321> seeing<00:16:05.771> how<00:16:05.883> many<00:16:06.108> women<00:16:06.429> were<00:16:06.525> not<00:16:07.472> involved<00:16:08.419> and<00:16:08.579> the<00:16:08.611> number<00:16:08.980> of<00:16:09.141> women<00:16:09.462> that<00:16:10.024> didn't<00:16:10.425> really<00:16:10.682> seem<00:16:11.147> to<00:16:11.709> care<00:16:12.752> that<00:16:13.153> decisions<00:16:13.554> were<00:16:13.651> being<00:16:13.875> made<00:16:14.052> without<00:16:14.373> them,<00:16:14.614> that<00:16:14.774> they<00:16:14.854> were<00:16:15.015> vastly<00:16:15.480> underrepresented<00:16:16.363> at<00:16:16.459> every<00:16:16.684> level.
00:16:17.406 --> 00:16:21.163
That<00:16:17.808> women's<00:16:18.129> issues,<00:16:18.610> family<00:16:18.948> issues<00:16:19.429> were<00:16:19.526> not<00:16:19.750> getting<00:16:19.991> the<00:16:20.136> attention<00:16:20.537> that<00:16:20.633> they<00:16:20.794> deserved.
00:16:21.212 --> 00:16:34.699
And<00:16:21.340> so<00:16:21.902> I<00:16:21.998> wanted<00:16:22.319> to<00:16:22.400> figure<00:16:22.625> out<00:16:22.801> how<00:16:23.106> can<00:16:23.267> I<00:16:23.829> help<00:16:24.407> motivate<00:16:24.953> more<00:16:25.129> women<00:16:25.386> to<00:16:25.515> see<00:16:25.772> themselves<00:16:26.398> as<00:16:27.441> actors<00:16:27.875> in<00:16:27.939> our<00:16:28.084> democracy,<00:16:28.806> to<00:16:29.465> be<00:16:29.609> willing<00:16:29.866> to<00:16:29.946> step<00:16:30.251> up<00:16:30.428> even<00:16:30.605> if<00:16:30.733> they<00:16:30.781> never<00:16:31.054> run<00:16:31.215> for<00:16:31.375> office,<00:16:31.857> but<00:16:31.953> that<00:16:32.114> they,<00:16:32.901> you<00:16:32.933> know,<00:16:33.142> have<00:16:33.302> an<00:16:33.382> active<00:16:33.639> voice<00:16:33.976> and<00:16:34.041> participate.
00:16:34.763 --> 00:16:41.844
And<00:16:34.908> so<00:16:34.972> that's<00:16:35.229> why<00:16:35.325> we<00:16:35.406> founded<00:16:35.807> All<00:16:35.887> In<00:16:35.968> Together,<00:16:36.353> which<00:16:36.513> is<00:16:37.156> one<00:16:37.268> of<00:16:37.348> the<00:16:37.477> only<00:16:37.669> not<00:16:38.055> truly<00:16:38.456> nonpartisan<00:16:39.644> women's<00:16:40.062> political<00:16:40.608> education<00:16:41.106> organizations.
00:16:41.908 --> 00:16:46.019
And<00:16:42.390> it's<00:16:42.535> been<00:16:42.647> a<00:16:42.711> really<00:16:42.888> magical<00:16:43.337> experience<00:16:43.980> to<00:16:44.076> just<00:16:44.317> do<00:16:44.477> something<00:16:44.943> positive<00:16:45.361> and<00:16:45.505> constructive.
00:16:46.404 --> 00:17:02.005
And<00:16:46.806> being<00:16:47.528> nonpartisan,<00:16:48.652> in<00:16:48.732> this<00:16:49.214> like<00:16:49.535> wildly<00:16:50.016> polarized<00:16:50.562> time<00:16:52.006> has<00:16:52.183> also<00:16:52.424> been<00:16:52.568> like<00:16:52.664> remarkably<00:16:53.691> meaningful,<00:16:54.510> super<00:16:55.072> hard<00:16:56.018> and<00:16:56.901> always<00:16:57.158> complicated,<00:16:58.988> never<00:16:59.212> more<00:16:59.405> so<00:16:59.646> in<00:16:59.806> some<00:16:59.966> ways<00:17:00.191> than<00:17:00.368> now<00:17:00.769> because<00:17:01.106> of<00:17:01.250> the<00:17:01.331> polarization.
00:17:02.598 --> 00:17:19.928
And<00:17:02.775> also,<00:17:03.802> you<00:17:03.834> know,<00:17:03.979> if<00:17:04.123> you<00:17:04.219> believe<00:17:04.685> in<00:17:04.781> democracy,<00:17:05.503> if<00:17:05.648> you<00:17:05.824> believe<00:17:06.450> in<00:17:06.627> this<00:17:06.787> core<00:17:07.028> principle<00:17:07.429> that<00:17:07.574> our<00:17:07.606> nation<00:17:07.991> was<00:17:08.151> founded<00:17:08.472> on,<00:17:09.114> that<00:17:09.275> everyone<00:17:09.580> deserves<00:17:09.917> a<00:17:09.933> voice<00:17:10.318> and<00:17:10.382> that<00:17:10.494> our<00:17:10.703> government<00:17:11.201> is<00:17:11.506> of<00:17:11.602> the<00:17:11.682> people,<00:17:11.987> by<00:17:12.148> the<00:17:12.244> people,<00:17:12.485> and<00:17:12.629> for<00:17:12.741> the<00:17:12.870> people,<00:17:13.447> the<00:17:13.528> most<00:17:13.768> fundamental<00:17:14.330> ideal<00:17:14.796> of<00:17:14.876> our<00:17:15.213> nation,<00:17:16.176> you<00:17:16.256> know,<00:17:16.416> you<00:17:16.737> have<00:17:16.962> to<00:17:17.058> believe<00:17:17.315> in<00:17:17.379> that<00:17:17.684> even<00:17:17.797> when,<00:17:18.277> It<00:17:18.405> means<00:17:18.678> including<00:17:19.062> people<00:17:19.223> that<00:17:19.367> you<00:17:19.447> don't<00:17:19.608> agree<00:17:19.784> with.
00:17:20.730 --> 00:17:29.050
And<00:17:21.131> that's<00:17:21.371> a<00:17:21.628> really<00:17:21.948> challenging<00:17:22.429> thing<00:17:22.590> right<00:17:22.750> now<00:17:23.070> because<00:17:24.016> the<00:17:24.594> disagreements<00:17:25.235> are<00:17:25.315> so<00:17:25.636> deep<00:17:25.956> and<00:17:26.052> so<00:17:26.341> ideological<00:17:27.704> and<00:17:27.976> so<00:17:28.281> polarizing.
00:17:30.109 --> 00:17:31.022
But<00:17:30.269> I<00:17:30.365> really<00:17:30.606> believe<00:17:30.846> that.
00:17:31.070 --> 00:17:37.066
And<00:17:31.167> I<00:17:31.327> do<00:17:31.567> believe<00:17:31.952> that<00:17:32.193> our<00:17:32.289> democracy<00:17:32.770> is<00:17:32.850> made<00:17:33.074> stronger<00:17:33.475> by<00:17:33.571> the<00:17:33.652> participation<00:17:34.229> of<00:17:34.373> women,<00:17:35.255> you<00:17:35.335> know,<00:17:35.559> all<00:17:35.656> women,<00:17:36.281> Republicans,<00:17:36.698> Democrats.
00:17:37.115 --> 00:17:43.447
I<00:17:37.131> mean,<00:17:37.259> people<00:17:37.451> know<00:17:37.595> I'm<00:17:37.740> a<00:17:37.804> Democrat,<00:17:38.702> but<00:17:39.183> I<00:17:39.728> deeply<00:17:40.064> value<00:17:40.401> the<00:17:40.529> relationships<00:17:41.090> I've<00:17:41.187> built<00:17:41.411> with<00:17:41.587> Republican<00:17:42.068> women<00:17:42.373> who<00:17:42.533> I<00:17:42.630> respect<00:17:43.046> and<00:17:43.175> admire.
00:17:43.672 --> 00:17:46.317
We<00:17:43.752> don't<00:17:43.896> agree<00:17:44.233> on<00:17:44.313> a<00:17:44.377> lot<00:17:44.553> of<00:17:44.634> things,<00:17:45.034> but<00:17:45.179> I<00:17:45.339> want<00:17:45.515> their<00:17:45.676> voice<00:17:45.916> at<00:17:45.980> the<00:17:46.060> table.
00:17:46.461 --> 00:17:47.760
They<00:17:46.557> deserve<00:17:46.862> to<00:17:46.894> have<00:17:46.974> a<00:17:47.038> voice<00:17:47.279> at<00:17:47.343> the<00:17:47.423> table.
00:17:48.322 --> 00:17:50.935
And<00:17:48.402> so<00:17:49.588> that's<00:17:49.829> what<00:17:50.246> we<00:17:50.326> do<00:17:50.486> it<00:17:50.566> all<00:17:50.727> together.
00:17:51.031 --> 00:17:52.426
And<00:17:51.127> that's<00:17:51.272> why<00:17:51.432> it<00:17:51.528> means<00:17:51.704> so<00:17:51.849> much<00:17:52.153> to<00:17:52.234> me.
00:17:53.676 --> 00:17:56.851
What<00:17:54.077> holds<00:17:54.574> women<00:17:54.895> back<00:17:55.199> in<00:17:55.295> politics<00:17:56.177> and<00:17:56.418> business?
00:17:57.043 --> 00:18:04.690
I<00:17:57.075> mean,<00:17:57.219> I<00:17:57.235> know<00:17:57.444> that's<00:17:57.620> a<00:17:57.684> very<00:17:58.502> broad<00:17:59.143> and<00:17:59.335> maybe<00:17:59.784> even<00:17:59.945> like<00:18:00.201> a<00:18:00.265> naive<00:18:00.906> question,<00:18:01.788> but<00:18:01.964> I<00:18:02.109> think<00:18:02.285> it's<00:18:02.590> useful<00:18:03.055> for<00:18:03.215> this,<00:18:03.616> for<00:18:03.712> this<00:18:03.936> audience<00:18:04.353> to<00:18:04.417> hear.
00:18:04.978 --> 00:18:05.251
Yeah.
00:18:05.539 --> 00:18:08.521
And<00:18:05.860> I<00:18:05.956> didn't<00:18:06.341> answer<00:18:06.678> your<00:18:06.838> dysfunctional<00:18:07.720> Congress<00:18:08.185> question.
00:18:08.585 --> 00:18:09.355
I<00:18:08.682> didn't<00:18:08.986> answer<00:18:09.227> that.
00:18:09.467 --> 00:18:12.144
I<00:18:09.547> didn't<00:18:09.788> mean<00:18:10.028> to<00:18:10.269> ignore<00:18:10.605> the<00:18:10.669> question,<00:18:10.926> but<00:18:11.070> it<00:18:11.166> sort<00:18:11.407> of<00:18:11.487> goes<00:18:11.792> together.
00:18:12.866 --> 00:18:27.294
So,<00:18:13.315> I<00:18:13.395> mean,<00:18:13.571> look,<00:18:14.549> I<00:18:15.532> believe<00:18:15.935> that<00:18:16.080> there<00:18:16.273> are<00:18:16.982> a<00:18:17.047> lot<00:18:17.224> of<00:18:17.385> really<00:18:17.691> good<00:18:17.869> people<00:18:18.755> who<00:18:19.142> are<00:18:19.545> every<00:18:19.786> day<00:18:20.270> out<00:18:20.431> there<00:18:21.076> working<00:18:21.334> to<00:18:21.430> try<00:18:21.575> to<00:18:21.640> make<00:18:21.801> the<00:18:21.882> country<00:18:22.123> better<00:18:23.106> in<00:18:23.187> the<00:18:23.268> best<00:18:23.509> way<00:18:23.590> that<00:18:23.751> they<00:18:23.800> know<00:18:23.977> how<00:18:24.814> in<00:18:24.943> a<00:18:25.201> really<00:18:25.523> difficult<00:18:25.909> and<00:18:25.990> complicated<00:18:26.795> structure.
00:18:27.858 --> 00:18:30.885
You<00:18:27.938> know,<00:18:28.099> the<00:18:28.180> founders<00:18:29.227> built<00:18:29.484> our<00:18:29.629> democracy<00:18:30.177> this<00:18:30.338> way<00:18:30.515> on<00:18:30.660> purpose.
00:18:30.998 --> 00:18:39.070
I<00:18:31.095> don't<00:18:31.304> think<00:18:31.465> they<00:18:31.642> would<00:18:31.803> have<00:18:32.367> envisioned<00:18:33.564> how<00:18:33.825> polarized<00:18:34.721> and<00:18:34.868> how,<00:18:36.757> you<00:18:36.920> know,<00:18:37.718> dysfunctional<00:18:38.484> it's<00:18:38.712> become.
00:18:39.926 --> 00:18:41.914
You<00:18:39.990> know,<00:18:40.118> they<00:18:40.327> built<00:18:40.503> the<00:18:40.583> US<00:18:40.824> Congress<00:18:41.208> this<00:18:41.369> way<00:18:41.465> on<00:18:41.609> purpose.
00:18:42.026 --> 00:18:45.969
They<00:18:42.106> built<00:18:42.347> the<00:18:42.491> two<00:18:42.747> houses,<00:18:43.709> the<00:18:43.853> two<00:18:44.174> legislative<00:18:44.671> chambers<00:18:45.168> to<00:18:45.248> be<00:18:45.392> really<00:18:45.713> different.
00:18:46.033 --> 00:18:49.897
They<00:18:46.178> wanted<00:18:46.595> the<00:18:46.675> Senate<00:18:47.556> to<00:18:47.636> be<00:18:47.797> this<00:18:48.101> long-term<00:18:48.999> deliberative<00:18:49.624> body.
00:18:49.961 --> 00:18:57.174
They<00:18:50.185> wanted<00:18:50.442> them<00:18:50.538> to<00:18:50.602> serve<00:18:50.859> 6<00:18:51.099> years<00:18:51.804> so<00:18:51.965> that<00:18:52.510> they<00:18:52.670> were<00:18:52.766> not<00:18:53.007> subject<00:18:53.471> just<00:18:53.648> to<00:18:53.808> the<00:18:54.289> political<00:18:54.770> whims<00:18:55.155> of<00:18:55.251> the<00:18:55.331> day,<00:18:55.716> that<00:18:55.812> they<00:18:55.956> could<00:18:56.116> take<00:18:56.277> a<00:18:56.357> longer-term<00:18:56.854> view.
00:18:57.816 --> 00:18:59.996
And<00:18:57.880> they<00:18:58.040> wanted<00:18:58.361> them<00:18:58.521> to<00:18:58.601> be<00:18:58.697> representing<00:18:59.258> an<00:18:59.355> entire<00:18:59.755> state.
00:19:00.605 --> 00:19:07.402
And<00:19:00.685> then<00:19:00.845> on<00:19:00.877> the<00:19:00.958> flip<00:19:01.182> side,<00:19:01.342> they<00:19:01.503> wanted<00:19:02.048> the<00:19:02.128> Congress<00:19:03.250> to<00:19:03.410> be<00:19:03.731> the<00:19:03.827> voice<00:19:04.051> of<00:19:04.132> the<00:19:04.228> people,<00:19:04.548> to<00:19:04.628> be<00:19:04.725> super<00:19:05.029> responsive,<00:19:05.574> that<00:19:05.670> they'd<00:19:05.975> have<00:19:06.151> to<00:19:06.231> run<00:19:06.456> for<00:19:06.536> office<00:19:06.809> every<00:19:07.017> 2<00:19:07.177> years.
00:19:07.899 --> 00:19:12.051
Because<00:19:08.139> then<00:19:08.315> if<00:19:08.412> they<00:19:08.540> did<00:19:08.716> something<00:19:09.021> that<00:19:09.117> the<00:19:09.197> people<00:19:09.437> didn't<00:19:09.678> like,<00:19:09.918> that<00:19:10.063> they<00:19:10.143> would<00:19:10.239> be<00:19:10.383> voted<00:19:10.704> out<00:19:10.944> and<00:19:11.024> that<00:19:11.121> they<00:19:11.201> could<00:19:11.281> be<00:19:11.441> voted<00:19:11.666> out<00:19:11.762> quickly.
00:19:12.645 --> 00:19:15.793
And<00:19:12.790> so<00:19:12.886> they<00:19:12.983> set<00:19:13.288> up<00:19:13.432> this<00:19:13.513> system,<00:19:14.556> you<00:19:14.637> know,<00:19:14.733> really<00:19:14.974> in<00:19:15.054> a<00:19:15.134> brilliant<00:19:15.536> way.
00:19:16.499 --> 00:19:19.277
But<00:19:16.660> it<00:19:16.885> also<00:19:17.061> means,<00:19:17.704> you<00:19:17.784> know,<00:19:17.880> it's<00:19:18.105> working<00:19:18.507> in<00:19:18.651> some<00:19:18.908> ways.
00:19:19.711 --> 00:19:21.285
You<00:19:19.743> know,<00:19:20.032> it<00:19:20.128> is<00:19:20.337> meant<00:19:20.578> to<00:19:20.690> move<00:19:20.899> slowly.
00:19:21.798 --> 00:19:30.711
It<00:19:21.895> is<00:19:22.103> meant<00:19:22.360> to<00:19:22.521> prevent<00:19:23.484> any<00:19:23.709> one<00:19:23.966> party<00:19:24.833> from<00:19:25.636> radically<00:19:26.134> changing<00:19:27.322> the<00:19:28.125> landscape<00:19:28.719> of<00:19:28.784> our<00:19:28.944> nation<00:19:29.346> in<00:19:29.506> any<00:19:29.667> short<00:19:29.988> period<00:19:30.229> of<00:19:30.309> time.
00:19:31.192 --> 00:19:32.686
And<00:19:31.513> they<00:19:31.738> wanted<00:19:32.059> that<00:19:32.236> on<00:19:32.316> purpose.
00:19:33.424 --> 00:19:36.026
The<00:19:33.681> unfortunate<00:19:34.227> side<00:19:34.404> of<00:19:34.468> that<00:19:34.629> is<00:19:34.709> that<00:19:34.805> it<00:19:34.870> can<00:19:35.046> be<00:19:35.207> really<00:19:35.528> frustrating.
00:19:36.074 --> 00:19:41.967
And<00:19:36.170> members<00:19:36.475> of<00:19:36.556> Congress<00:19:36.877> have<00:19:36.973> said<00:19:37.198> to<00:19:37.230> me,<00:19:38.001> you<00:19:38.033> know,<00:19:38.820> when<00:19:38.980> you<00:19:39.366> sit<00:19:39.623> in<00:19:39.767> high<00:19:40.008> office,<00:19:40.345> you<00:19:40.506> learn<00:19:40.747> to<00:19:40.907> relish<00:19:41.309> the<00:19:41.453> incremental.
00:19:42.577 --> 00:19:47.587
You<00:19:42.609> know,<00:19:42.754> you're<00:19:42.850> never<00:19:43.155> going<00:19:43.252> to<00:19:43.332> make—<00:19:44.424> it's<00:19:44.745> rare<00:19:45.066> that<00:19:45.226> you're<00:19:45.307> going<00:19:45.387> to<00:19:45.467> make<00:19:45.708> like<00:19:45.965> big<00:19:46.382> sweeping<00:19:47.153> change.
00:19:47.956 --> 00:19:52.564
You<00:19:48.132> learn<00:19:48.453> to<00:19:48.614> take<00:19:49.096> small<00:19:49.353> steps<00:19:49.898> and<00:19:50.043> to<00:19:50.204> work<00:19:50.396> over<00:19:50.557> the<00:19:50.685> very<00:19:50.862> long<00:19:51.103> term<00:19:51.504> to<00:19:51.825> drive<00:19:52.227> forward.
00:19:52.628 --> 00:20:01.105
So<00:19:53.334> I<00:19:53.431> think<00:19:53.816> to<00:19:54.057> answer<00:19:54.298> your<00:19:54.490> second<00:19:54.876> question,<00:19:55.903> look,<00:19:56.224> I<00:19:56.321> think<00:19:57.107> in<00:19:57.204> politics<00:19:58.183> it's<00:19:58.568> very<00:19:58.809> encouraging<00:19:59.291> what's<00:19:59.468> happening<00:19:59.773> in<00:19:59.837> terms<00:20:00.029> of<00:20:00.094> women<00:20:00.334> running<00:20:00.640> for<00:20:00.800> office.
00:20:01.539 --> 00:20:04.766
You<00:20:01.619> know,<00:20:01.715> we<00:20:01.844> did<00:20:02.020> see<00:20:02.261> record<00:20:02.518> numbers<00:20:02.823> of<00:20:02.903> women<00:20:03.128> in<00:20:03.208> the<00:20:03.289> last<00:20:03.546> two<00:20:03.706> cycles<00:20:04.027> step<00:20:04.268> forward<00:20:04.509> to<00:20:04.573> run.
00:20:05.231 --> 00:20:07.046
But<00:20:05.392> it<00:20:05.472> remains<00:20:05.858> remarkably<00:20:06.741> hard.
00:20:07.479 --> 00:20:10.963
When<00:20:07.800> women<00:20:08.121> choose<00:20:08.426> to<00:20:08.587> run,<00:20:09.165> they<00:20:09.390> win<00:20:09.631> at<00:20:09.727> equal<00:20:10.369> rates<00:20:10.754> as<00:20:10.851> men.
00:20:11.428 --> 00:20:13.560
So<00:20:11.653> when<00:20:11.813> they<00:20:11.973> step<00:20:12.278> up,<00:20:12.598> they<00:20:12.695> do<00:20:12.839> remarkably<00:20:13.336> well.
00:20:13.977 --> 00:20:22.553
And<00:20:14.282> yes,<00:20:14.554> there's<00:20:14.762> bias<00:20:15.083> in<00:20:15.163> the<00:20:15.243> system,<00:20:15.644> but<00:20:15.901> if<00:20:16.045> they<00:20:16.205> run,<00:20:16.702> they<00:20:17.023> tend<00:20:17.247> to<00:20:17.343> win<00:20:17.504> at<00:20:17.728> basically<00:20:18.145> the<00:20:18.241> same<00:20:18.530> rates<00:20:18.722> as<00:20:18.866> men,<00:20:19.107> if<00:20:19.251> you,<00:20:19.572> you<00:20:19.604> know,<00:20:20.133> all<00:20:20.245> of<00:20:20.373> the<00:20:20.469> things<00:20:20.710> being<00:20:22.136> equal.
00:20:22.617 --> 00:20:26.577
But<00:20:22.713> they<00:20:22.810> still<00:20:23.258> remain<00:20:24.621> heavily<00:20:24.942> deterred<00:20:25.423> from<00:20:25.583> running<00:20:25.823> in<00:20:25.903> the<00:20:25.984> first<00:20:26.224> place.
00:20:27.106 --> 00:20:35.153
And<00:20:27.747> you<00:20:27.827> don't<00:20:28.003> see<00:20:28.100> nearly,<00:20:28.821> you<00:20:28.901> know,<00:20:29.029> even<00:20:29.206> though<00:20:29.302> the<00:20:29.382> numbers<00:20:29.671> have<00:20:29.847> been<00:20:29.991> historic,<00:20:30.632> they're<00:20:30.728> still<00:20:30.969> not<00:20:31.193> nearly<00:20:31.514> what<00:20:31.610> they<00:20:31.690> would<00:20:31.851> need<00:20:32.075> to<00:20:32.107> be<00:20:32.251> in<00:20:32.332> order<00:20:32.572> for<00:20:32.716> us<00:20:32.877> to<00:20:32.909> get<00:20:33.053> to<00:20:33.197> a<00:20:33.277> 50%,<00:20:33.534> you<00:20:33.614> know,<00:20:34.319> anything<00:20:34.656> close<00:20:34.896> to<00:20:34.976> that.
00:20:35.217 --> 00:20:40.347
I<00:20:35.233> mean,<00:20:35.361> there's<00:20:35.457> only<00:20:35.682> one<00:20:35.874> state<00:20:36.179> in<00:20:36.243> the<00:20:36.323> country<00:20:36.579> that<00:20:36.724> has<00:20:36.980> even<00:20:37.205> 50%<00:20:37.686> women<00:20:37.926> in<00:20:38.006> their<00:20:38.102> state<00:20:38.327> legislature,<00:20:39.465> and<00:20:39.609> that's<00:20:39.802> Nevada.
00:20:40.747 --> 00:20:50.098
Well,<00:20:41.052> Virginia<00:20:41.773> is<00:20:41.853> now<00:20:42.014> very<00:20:42.190> close,<00:20:42.511> but,<00:20:42.687> you<00:20:42.783> know,<00:20:42.960> You<00:20:43.056> know,<00:20:43.296> most<00:20:43.473> states<00:20:43.858> it's<00:20:44.034> 20,<00:20:44.435> 30%<00:20:45.398> women<00:20:46.425> in<00:20:46.521> the<00:20:46.601> state<00:20:46.826> legislature,<00:20:47.323> and<00:20:47.483> Congress<00:20:47.884> has<00:20:47.965> still<00:20:48.286> not<00:20:48.526> ever<00:20:49.248> been<00:20:49.409> greater<00:20:49.713> than<00:20:49.890> 30%.
00:20:50.852 --> 00:20:57.510
And<00:20:50.933> I<00:20:51.093> think<00:20:51.253> part<00:20:51.478> of<00:20:51.510> it<00:20:51.638> is<00:20:51.735> because<00:20:51.895> women<00:20:52.136> look<00:20:52.296> at<00:20:52.376> this<00:20:53.018> landscape<00:20:53.499> and<00:20:53.563> they<00:20:54.125> do<00:20:54.446> ask<00:20:54.638> a<00:20:54.686> legitimate<00:20:55.023> question,<00:20:55.505> which<00:20:55.681> is,<00:20:55.841> is<00:20:55.970> this<00:20:56.146> really<00:20:56.387> the<00:20:56.467> best<00:20:56.692> way<00:20:56.788> to<00:20:56.964> serve?
00:20:57.911 --> 00:21:11.292
And<00:20:57.975> I<00:20:58.055> think<00:20:58.216> for<00:20:58.376> a<00:20:58.392> lot<00:20:58.697> of<00:20:58.793> women,<00:20:59.820> nonprofit<00:21:00.397> leadership,<00:21:01.280> you<00:21:01.344> know,<00:21:01.440> engaging<00:21:01.905> in<00:21:01.986> community<00:21:02.387> organizations,<00:21:03.446> serving<00:21:03.702> in<00:21:03.766> their<00:21:03.991> churches,<00:21:05.194> PTAs,<00:21:06.237> you<00:21:06.269> know,<00:21:06.879> those<00:21:07.296> kinds<00:21:07.536> of<00:21:07.600> things<00:21:07.857> feel<00:21:08.082> closer<00:21:08.354> to<00:21:08.483> home<00:21:08.659> and<00:21:08.820> feel<00:21:09.044> more<00:21:10.569> meaningful.
00:21:11.950 --> 00:21:26.864
But<00:21:12.736> I'm<00:21:13.154> hopeful<00:21:13.411> that<00:21:13.571> that's<00:21:13.860> changing,<00:21:14.358> that<00:21:14.583> as<00:21:14.759> women<00:21:15.096> see<00:21:15.803> more<00:21:16.027> and<00:21:16.188> more<00:21:16.349> women<00:21:16.750> in<00:21:16.926> public<00:21:17.232> office,<00:21:17.986> see<00:21:18.131> women<00:21:18.371> that<00:21:18.468> they<00:21:18.612> know<00:21:20.041> participate<00:21:20.635> in<00:21:20.699> the<00:21:20.779> process<00:21:21.197> in<00:21:21.325> other<00:21:21.502> ways<00:21:21.967> that<00:21:22.128> shows<00:21:22.465> them<00:21:22.626> that<00:21:22.802> it's<00:21:22.963> not<00:21:23.172> hopelessly<00:21:23.669> broken,<00:21:24.071> that<00:21:24.231> they<00:21:24.311> can<00:21:24.552> make<00:21:24.713> a<00:21:24.793> difference,<00:21:25.820> that<00:21:25.917> that<00:21:26.077> will<00:21:26.174> motivate<00:21:26.559> people.
00:21:27.121 --> 00:21:30.187
And<00:21:27.362> it's<00:21:27.667> not<00:21:28.469> radically<00:21:28.887> dissimilar<00:21:29.368> in<00:21:29.449> the<00:21:29.529> business<00:21:29.914> world.
00:21:30.316 --> 00:21:36.159
You<00:21:30.396> know,<00:21:30.877> you<00:21:30.974> still<00:21:31.311> see<00:21:31.616> women<00:21:32.579> holding<00:21:32.981> back<00:21:33.382> from,<00:21:34.265> you<00:21:34.345> know,<00:21:34.490> really<00:21:34.811> pushing<00:21:35.212> for<00:21:35.308> the<00:21:35.453> top<00:21:35.726> jobs.
00:21:36.416 --> 00:21:44.092
There's<00:21:36.656> a<00:21:36.736> lot<00:21:36.913> of<00:21:36.993> ambivalence<00:21:37.570> about<00:21:37.794> whether<00:21:37.954> or<00:21:38.018> not<00:21:38.130> it's<00:21:38.339> worth<00:21:38.595> it<00:21:38.755> at<00:21:38.835> the<00:21:38.916> top,<00:21:39.957> whether<00:21:40.214> they're<00:21:40.358> willing<00:21:40.662> to<00:21:40.742> make<00:21:40.983> the<00:21:41.079> sacrifices<00:21:41.800> that<00:21:41.896> it<00:21:42.040> takes<00:21:42.842> to<00:21:42.986> have<00:21:43.338> those<00:21:43.563> top<00:21:43.803> jobs.
00:21:44.428 --> 00:21:58.321
And<00:21:44.700> as<00:21:44.909> long<00:21:45.165> as<00:21:45.325> those<00:21:45.566> jobs,<00:21:45.966> whether<00:21:46.207> it's<00:21:46.383> in<00:21:46.527> Congress<00:21:47.489> or<00:21:47.553> in<00:21:47.585> the<00:21:47.665> Senate<00:21:47.905> and<00:21:48.050> the<00:21:48.194> White<00:21:48.354> House<00:21:48.931> or<00:21:49.011> in<00:21:49.171> corporate<00:21:49.428> America,<00:21:50.069> as<00:21:50.197> long<00:21:50.453> as<00:21:50.549> the<00:21:50.630> model<00:21:51.174> for<00:21:51.399> leadership<00:21:52.040> is<00:21:52.216> this<00:21:53.001> very<00:21:53.258> white<00:21:53.498> male<00:21:54.139> model,<00:21:54.459> which<00:21:54.684> it<00:21:54.780> is<00:21:55.084> and<00:21:55.181> it<00:21:55.325> remains,<00:21:56.703> people<00:21:57.088> ask,<00:21:57.360> is<00:21:57.504> there<00:21:57.648> really<00:21:57.889> a<00:21:57.905> place<00:21:58.145> for<00:21:58.225> me?
00:21:58.386 --> 00:22:02.199
Can<00:21:58.706> I<00:21:58.930> be<00:21:59.251> who<00:21:59.491> I<00:21:59.748> am<00:22:00.629> and<00:22:00.789> succeed<00:22:01.510> in<00:22:01.655> those<00:22:01.895> roles?
00:22:02.937 --> 00:22:04.366
And<00:22:03.194> that's<00:22:03.435> a<00:22:03.499> legitimate<00:22:03.916> question.
00:22:04.799 --> 00:22:15.358
And<00:22:04.943> I<00:22:04.959> think<00:22:05.200> we<00:22:05.296> need<00:22:05.585> more<00:22:05.746> CEOs<00:22:06.805> to<00:22:06.949> help<00:22:07.190> people<00:22:07.527> see<00:22:08.409> that<00:22:08.554> the<00:22:08.714> answer<00:22:08.971> is,<00:22:09.677> you<00:22:09.709> know,<00:22:10.319> you<00:22:10.479> can<00:22:10.720> lead<00:22:10.977> and<00:22:11.121> you<00:22:11.218> can<00:22:11.378> do<00:22:11.539> it<00:22:11.619> your<00:22:11.843> way,<00:22:12.566> that<00:22:12.742> we<00:22:12.822> are<00:22:12.919> not<00:22:13.143> going<00:22:13.256> to<00:22:13.384> force<00:22:13.785> you<00:22:14.106> to<00:22:14.427> be<00:22:14.587> something<00:22:14.892> you're<00:22:15.005> not.
00:22:15.711 --> 00:22:17.604
We<00:22:15.791> are<00:22:15.855> not<00:22:16.032> going<00:22:16.144> to<00:22:16.256> expect<00:22:16.674> women<00:22:16.914> to<00:22:16.995> lead<00:22:17.219> like<00:22:17.396> men.
00:22:18.102 --> 00:22:28.388
We<00:22:18.182> are<00:22:18.214> not<00:22:18.519> going<00:22:18.824> to,<00:22:19.386> you<00:22:19.466> know,<00:22:20.124> enforce<00:22:20.830> a<00:22:20.862> standard<00:22:21.488> of,<00:22:22.033> you<00:22:22.065> know,<00:22:23.237> macho<00:22:23.895> behavior<00:22:24.777> in<00:22:24.938> the<00:22:25.034> C-suite<00:22:25.804> that<00:22:26.446> makes<00:22:26.719> women<00:22:27.024> feel<00:22:27.329> that<00:22:27.666> there's<00:22:27.890> no<00:22:27.987> place<00:22:28.227> for<00:22:28.292> them.
00:22:28.773 --> 00:22:29.511
All<00:22:28.885> of<00:22:29.014> that<00:22:29.206> stuff.
00:22:30.378 --> 00:22:31.615
Has<00:22:30.651> to<00:22:30.780> continue<00:22:31.213> to<00:22:31.358> change.
00:22:31.679 --> 00:22:40.431
And<00:22:31.824> we<00:22:31.856> need<00:22:32.081> to<00:22:32.161> keep<00:22:32.321> seeing<00:22:32.562> more<00:22:32.723> and<00:22:32.803> more<00:22:32.948> women<00:22:33.221> sit<00:22:33.430> in<00:22:33.510> those<00:22:33.686> positions<00:22:34.168> and<00:22:34.313> do<00:22:34.473> it<00:22:34.570> on<00:22:34.650> their<00:22:34.811> own<00:22:34.955> terms<00:22:35.919> to<00:22:36.015> prove<00:22:36.898> to<00:22:37.284> up<00:22:37.444> and,<00:22:37.605> you<00:22:37.637> know,<00:22:37.862> younger<00:22:38.183> women,<00:22:38.906> up-and-coming<00:22:39.371> women<00:22:39.612> that<00:22:39.709> they<00:22:39.789> can<00:22:39.950> do<00:22:40.046> it<00:22:40.110> too.
00:22:41.796 --> 00:22:44.494
I<00:22:41.861> do<00:22:41.957> wonder<00:22:42.198> how<00:22:42.278> much<00:22:42.519> the<00:22:42.599> pandemic<00:22:43.081> has<00:22:43.242> changed<00:22:44.189> that.
00:22:44.671 --> 00:23:01.086
And<00:22:44.864> you've<00:22:45.008> touched<00:22:45.249> on<00:22:45.329> this<00:22:45.490> a<00:22:45.554> little<00:22:45.667> bit<00:22:45.811> already,<00:22:46.695> but<00:22:46.839> like<00:22:47.096> when<00:22:47.401> you<00:22:47.481> talk<00:22:47.722> about<00:22:47.819> politics<00:22:48.381> and<00:22:48.461> how,<00:22:49.103> you<00:22:49.200> know,<00:22:49.409> women<00:22:49.649> will<00:22:49.762> look<00:22:49.906> around,<00:22:50.147> they're<00:22:50.228> like,<00:22:50.452> I<00:22:50.549> could<00:22:50.693> actually<00:22:50.950> serve<00:22:51.352> much<00:22:51.753> more<00:22:51.914> effectively<00:22:53.102> and<00:22:53.199> much<00:22:53.439> more<00:22:53.600> meaningfully<00:22:54.307> locally<00:22:55.270> on<00:22:55.383> a<00:22:55.447> nonprofit<00:22:56.394> or<00:22:56.973> you<00:22:57.053> said<00:22:57.214> like<00:22:57.535> PTA<00:22:58.162> or<00:22:58.258> inside<00:22:58.740> my<00:22:59.045> church<00:22:59.367> community<00:22:59.688> or<00:22:59.865> whatever<00:23:00.266> it<00:23:00.347> is,<00:23:00.813> right?
00:23:01.696 --> 00:23:04.492
I<00:23:01.953> wonder<00:23:02.355> if<00:23:02.516> that's<00:23:02.837> not<00:23:03.223> actually<00:23:03.640> the<00:23:03.865> right<00:23:04.106> decision.
00:23:05.793 --> 00:23:07.866
You<00:23:05.825> know,<00:23:06.066> like,<00:23:06.275> I<00:23:06.372> don't—<00:23:06.677> that's<00:23:06.918> the<00:23:07.079> fascinating<00:23:07.721> thing.
00:23:08.123 --> 00:23:09.746
I<00:23:08.219> don't<00:23:09.424> know.
00:23:09.971 --> 00:23:14.662
Like,<00:23:10.613> I've<00:23:10.790> had<00:23:10.951> a<00:23:11.031> couple<00:23:11.272> friends<00:23:11.738> run<00:23:11.995> for<00:23:12.220> office<00:23:13.602> in<00:23:13.746> my<00:23:14.486> time.
00:23:14.727 --> 00:23:16.205
One<00:23:14.968> is<00:23:15.128> now<00:23:15.353> the<00:23:15.530> governor<00:23:15.851> of<00:23:16.076> Utah.
00:23:16.253 --> 00:23:19.820
Another<00:23:16.638> one's<00:23:17.120> a<00:23:17.217> congressman<00:23:19.209> here<00:23:19.370> in<00:23:19.531> Utah.
00:23:20.655 --> 00:23:32.957
And<00:23:21.137> as<00:23:21.314> I've<00:23:21.555> seen<00:23:21.876> what<00:23:22.037> they've<00:23:22.342> gone<00:23:22.680> through<00:23:22.985> to<00:23:23.386> get<00:23:23.707> to<00:23:23.819> attain<00:23:24.284> that<00:23:24.524> position,<00:23:25.069> as<00:23:25.166> I've<00:23:25.326> seen<00:23:25.566> what<00:23:25.727> they've<00:23:25.951> gone<00:23:26.272> through<00:23:27.907> since<00:23:28.212> getting<00:23:28.532> the<00:23:28.693> position,<00:23:29.959> I<00:23:30.055> always<00:23:30.280> tell<00:23:30.392> them,<00:23:30.536> I'm<00:23:30.616> like,<00:23:30.841> this<00:23:31.017> is<00:23:31.178> great<00:23:31.578> for<00:23:31.899> everyone<00:23:32.460> but<00:23:32.701> you.
00:23:33.262 --> 00:23:35.346
Like,<00:23:33.486> this<00:23:33.663> is<00:23:33.823> not<00:23:34.705> great<00:23:35.009> for<00:23:35.250> you.
00:23:35.683 --> 00:23:36.933
All<00:23:36.725> right.
00:23:37.013 --> 00:23:44.741
Well,<00:23:37.174> you're<00:23:37.302> never<00:23:37.590> going<00:23:37.687> to<00:23:37.751> convince<00:23:38.168> me<00:23:38.296> that<00:23:38.376> people<00:23:38.632> shouldn't<00:23:38.793> run<00:23:39.017> for<00:23:39.113> office,<00:23:39.578> but<00:23:39.755> look,<00:23:40.075> here's—<00:23:41.839> sorry,<00:23:43.105> I've<00:23:43.266> thought<00:23:43.442> about<00:23:43.602> this<00:23:43.811> one<00:23:43.923> a<00:23:43.939> little<00:23:44.228> bit.
00:23:45.125 --> 00:23:46.216
Look,<00:23:45.751> here's<00:23:45.911> the<00:23:46.071> thing.
00:23:47.274 --> 00:23:49.903
Yes,<00:23:47.546> of<00:23:47.691> course<00:23:47.947> it's<00:23:48.107> meaning—<00:23:48.412> look,<00:23:48.636> it's<00:23:48.957> all<00:23:49.133> important<00:23:49.598> and<00:23:49.695> good.
00:23:49.999 --> 00:23:55.693
And<00:23:50.095> like,<00:23:50.256> of<00:23:50.336> course<00:23:50.576> we<00:23:50.672> need<00:23:50.881> people<00:23:51.137> to<00:23:51.234> volunteer<00:23:51.779> for<00:23:51.859> their<00:23:52.003> community<00:23:52.340> organizations<00:23:53.077> and<00:23:53.190> to<00:23:53.238> serve<00:23:53.607> on<00:23:53.864> boards<00:23:54.104> of<00:23:54.185> education<00:23:54.666> and<00:23:54.907> PTAs<00:23:55.244> and<00:23:55.372> all<00:23:55.404> that<00:23:55.565> stuff.
00:23:55.789 --> 00:23:57.282
Of<00:23:55.934> course<00:23:56.175> we<00:23:56.207> need<00:23:56.415> that,<00:23:56.656> and<00:23:56.752> that's<00:23:56.929> important.
00:23:57.780 --> 00:24:02.707
What<00:23:57.876> drives<00:23:58.277> me<00:23:58.421> a<00:23:58.662> little<00:23:58.919> bit<00:23:59.080> slightly<00:23:59.400> crazy<00:24:00.267> is<00:24:00.428> that<00:24:00.604> I<00:24:00.684> will<00:24:00.845> just<00:24:00.989> tell<00:24:01.166> you,<00:24:01.391> you<00:24:01.423> know,<00:24:01.760> so<00:24:02.049> I<00:24:02.193> ran<00:24:02.370> for<00:24:02.514> office.
00:24:02.755 --> 00:24:06.478
I'm<00:24:02.867> an<00:24:02.931> elected<00:24:03.252> official<00:24:03.653> in<00:24:04.071> my<00:24:04.295> local<00:24:04.536> town<00:24:05.258> in<00:24:05.644> Westchester,<00:24:06.061> New<00:24:06.205> York.
00:24:07.329 --> 00:24:14.021
I<00:24:07.441> am<00:24:07.569> the<00:24:07.730> only<00:24:07.987> woman<00:24:08.227> on<00:24:08.308> my<00:24:08.693> town<00:24:08.950> board,<00:24:09.897> which<00:24:10.073> is<00:24:10.169> about<00:24:10.458> to<00:24:10.539> change<00:24:10.940> because<00:24:11.197> very<00:24:11.662> excitingly<00:24:12.047> we<00:24:12.143> have<00:24:12.240> 4<00:24:12.721> women<00:24:13.042> running<00:24:13.363> in<00:24:13.443> this<00:24:13.604> cycle.
00:24:14.085 --> 00:24:17.504
So<00:24:14.390> no<00:24:14.487> matter<00:24:14.727> what,<00:24:15.032> I<00:24:15.048> will<00:24:15.161> not<00:24:15.369> be<00:24:15.450> the<00:24:15.594> only<00:24:15.771> one<00:24:16.075> after<00:24:16.252> November,<00:24:16.653> which<00:24:16.830> is<00:24:16.974> really<00:24:17.215> thrilling.
00:24:18.162 --> 00:24:23.517
But<00:24:18.258> when<00:24:18.483> I<00:24:18.579> was<00:24:18.804> running,<00:24:19.766> women<00:24:20.007> in<00:24:20.055> my<00:24:20.247> town<00:24:21.225> would<00:24:21.385> say<00:24:21.626> to<00:24:21.690> me,<00:24:22.010> oh,<00:24:22.090> I<00:24:22.187> could<00:24:22.347> never<00:24:22.668> do<00:24:22.828> what<00:24:22.988> you're<00:24:23.148> doing.
00:24:23.806 --> 00:24:24.735
Okay,<00:24:24.367> that<00:24:24.495> was<00:24:24.655> it.
00:24:24.799 --> 00:24:26.915
And<00:24:24.847> then<00:24:24.992> I<00:24:25.072> talked<00:24:25.296> to<00:24:25.328> them,<00:24:25.473> and<00:24:25.537> then<00:24:25.697> it<00:24:25.777> turns<00:24:25.970> out<00:24:26.034> that<00:24:26.194> they're<00:24:26.354> on<00:24:26.434> the<00:24:26.739> PTA.
00:24:27.717 --> 00:24:37.751
Let<00:24:27.829> me<00:24:27.893> tell<00:24:28.037> you<00:24:28.117> something,<00:24:28.999> you<00:24:29.079> want<00:24:29.239> to<00:24:29.320> talk<00:24:29.624> about<00:24:30.442> vicious,<00:24:31.948> uh,<00:24:32.750> hand-to-hand<00:24:34.032> combat<00:24:34.769> politics,<00:24:36.597> spend<00:24:36.933> some<00:24:37.030> time<00:24:37.254> on<00:24:37.334> a<00:24:37.559> PTA.
00:24:38.280 --> 00:24:42.063
Like,<00:24:38.697> they<00:24:39.017> got<00:24:39.578> nothing,<00:24:40.460> they<00:24:40.540> got<00:24:40.780> nothing<00:24:41.261> on<00:24:41.406> running<00:24:41.662> for<00:24:41.822> office.
00:24:42.287 --> 00:24:43.970
I<00:24:42.303> mean,<00:24:43.105> it's<00:24:43.329> intense.
00:24:44.371 --> 00:24:53.341
And<00:24:44.531> so,<00:24:45.092> you<00:24:45.172> know,<00:24:45.349> women<00:24:45.669> are<00:24:45.894> willing<00:24:46.375> to<00:24:47.192> you<00:24:47.273> know,<00:24:47.433> put<00:24:47.738> in<00:24:47.818> all<00:24:47.979> kinds<00:24:48.332> of<00:24:48.461> energy<00:24:49.039> and<00:24:49.761> fight<00:24:50.146> all<00:24:50.243> kinds<00:24:50.499> of<00:24:50.724> difficult<00:24:51.109> challenges,<00:24:52.153> you<00:24:52.185> know,<00:24:52.313> when<00:24:52.410> they<00:24:52.570> think<00:24:52.731> it's<00:24:52.891> worth<00:24:53.132> it.
00:24:53.614 --> 00:24:58.831
I<00:24:53.758> think<00:24:53.935> that<00:24:54.176> the<00:24:54.336> gap<00:24:54.914> is<00:24:55.043> that<00:24:55.139> they<00:24:55.283> don't<00:24:55.556> see<00:24:55.861> political<00:24:56.327> participation<00:24:57.370> as<00:24:57.467> something<00:24:58.350> that's<00:24:58.574> worth<00:24:58.751> it.
00:24:58.912 --> 00:25:01.528
They—<00:24:59.393> we've<00:24:59.714> been<00:24:59.859> telling<00:25:00.180> the<00:25:00.212> story<00:25:00.597> that<00:25:00.758> it's<00:25:00.870> not<00:25:01.079> worth<00:25:01.320> it.
00:25:02.026 --> 00:25:02.813
It's<00:25:02.267> worth<00:25:02.604> it.
00:25:03.230 --> 00:25:20.907
And<00:25:03.487> it's<00:25:03.647> worth<00:25:03.888> it<00:25:04.033> because,<00:25:04.273> you<00:25:04.370> know,<00:25:04.450> when<00:25:04.594> you<00:25:04.755> control<00:25:05.734> tens<00:25:06.071> of<00:25:06.136> millions<00:25:06.633> of<00:25:06.778> dollars<00:25:07.420> in<00:25:07.580> budget<00:25:07.918> for<00:25:08.078> your<00:25:08.223> town,<00:25:09.170> you<00:25:09.202> know,<00:25:09.346> when<00:25:09.491> you're<00:25:09.667> deciding<00:25:10.294> about,<00:25:10.952> you<00:25:11.048> know,<00:25:11.193> the<00:25:11.289> new<00:25:11.594> buildings<00:25:12.380> and<00:25:12.477> the<00:25:12.782> roads<00:25:13.440> and<00:25:13.601> the<00:25:13.938> stop<00:25:14.322> signs<00:25:14.562> and<00:25:14.643> the<00:25:14.739> speed<00:25:15.203> zones<00:25:15.604> and<00:25:15.684> your<00:25:15.908> police<00:25:16.645> and<00:25:16.725> your<00:25:16.886> fire<00:25:17.527> and<00:25:17.671> like<00:25:18.087> the<00:25:18.168> stuff<00:25:18.408> that,<00:25:18.873> you<00:25:18.905> know,<00:25:19.049> is<00:25:19.129> what<00:25:19.289> I<00:25:19.433> do<00:25:19.610> every<00:25:19.850> day<00:25:20.090> in<00:25:20.154> my<00:25:20.250> town<00:25:20.555> board.
00:25:20.971 --> 00:25:23.359
You<00:25:21.052> know,<00:25:21.612> it's<00:25:22.013> not<00:25:22.253> the<00:25:22.333> sexiest<00:25:23.054> stuff.
00:25:23.439 --> 00:25:26.179
We<00:25:23.535> spent<00:25:23.856> a<00:25:23.920> lot<00:25:24.112> of<00:25:24.176> time<00:25:24.416> talking<00:25:24.753> about<00:25:24.977> sewer<00:25:25.378> rents<00:25:25.858> lately.
00:25:26.323 --> 00:25:28.951
I'm<00:25:26.403> going<00:25:26.499> to<00:25:26.579> tell<00:25:26.804> you,<00:25:26.884> it<00:25:27.044> wasn't<00:25:27.380> the<00:25:27.541> most<00:25:27.781> interesting<00:25:28.182> thing<00:25:28.342> I've<00:25:28.486> ever<00:25:28.646> done.
00:25:29.383 --> 00:25:32.860
But,<00:25:29.944> you<00:25:30.040> know,<00:25:30.649> it's<00:25:30.809> an<00:25:30.889> amazing<00:25:31.450> thing<00:25:31.691> to<00:25:31.803> get<00:25:32.011> to<00:25:32.091> be<00:25:32.251> part<00:25:32.492> of<00:25:32.588> that.
00:25:32.908 --> 00:25:45.358
And<00:25:33.052> I<00:25:33.149> think<00:25:33.789> we<00:25:33.966> need<00:25:34.254> people<00:25:34.511> to<00:25:34.591> see—<00:25:34.815> look,<00:25:35.312> to<00:25:35.472> the<00:25:35.552> bigger<00:25:35.792> point<00:25:36.033> about<00:25:36.193> your<00:25:36.337> friends<00:25:36.658> who've<00:25:36.754> run<00:25:36.914> for<00:25:37.138> office<00:25:37.539> in<00:25:37.619> your<00:25:37.731> state,<00:25:38.821> you<00:25:39.077> wanted<00:25:39.397> them<00:25:39.558> there<00:25:40.102> because<00:25:40.423> you<00:25:40.663> wanted<00:25:41.000> to<00:25:41.096> know<00:25:41.320> the<00:25:41.544> good<00:25:41.721> people<00:25:42.442> with<00:25:42.666> good<00:25:42.842> values,<00:25:43.403> who<00:25:43.451> are<00:25:43.547> committed<00:25:44.124> truly<00:25:44.525> to<00:25:44.621> public<00:25:44.925> service.
00:25:46.207 --> 00:25:46.688
And<00:25:46.287> that's<00:25:46.528> key.
00:25:47.153 --> 00:25:48.418
Public<00:25:47.906> service.
00:25:49.556 --> 00:26:00.116
Not<00:25:50.069> self-service,<00:25:51.255> not<00:25:51.831> self-interest,<00:25:53.161> not<00:25:53.402> doing<00:25:53.642> it<00:25:53.738> because<00:25:53.963> they<00:25:54.059> want<00:25:54.299> power<00:25:54.620> and<00:25:54.780> attention,<00:25:55.661> but<00:25:55.741> doing<00:25:55.998> it<00:25:56.062> because<00:25:56.286> they're<00:25:56.526> actually<00:25:56.767> committed<00:25:57.183> to<00:25:57.247> making<00:25:57.824> their<00:25:57.984> community<00:25:58.385> better<00:25:59.106> and,<00:25:59.266> God<00:25:59.427> willing,<00:25:59.667> the<00:25:59.747> country.
00:26:00.869 --> 00:26:02.167
Those<00:26:01.109> are<00:26:01.189> the<00:26:01.269> people<00:26:01.590> you<00:26:01.734> want.
00:26:02.471 --> 00:26:04.073
And<00:26:02.872> we<00:26:03.032> need<00:26:03.272> those<00:26:03.513> good<00:26:03.673> people.
00:26:04.474 --> 00:26:09.457
And<00:26:04.634> as<00:26:04.778> long<00:26:05.035> as<00:26:05.179> the<00:26:05.259> good<00:26:05.419> people<00:26:05.756> think<00:26:06.397> it's<00:26:06.557> not<00:26:06.781> worth<00:26:07.022> it,<00:26:07.583> you<00:26:07.615> know,<00:26:08.063> we're<00:26:08.175> going<00:26:08.272> to<00:26:08.336> self-fulfill<00:26:08.880> that<00:26:09.025> prophecy.
00:26:09.885 --> 00:26:21.811
That's<00:26:10.111> how<00:26:10.273> we<00:26:10.435> wind<00:26:10.693> up<00:26:10.855> with<00:26:11.017> a<00:26:11.033> lot<00:26:11.341> of,<00:26:11.810> you<00:26:11.842> know,<00:26:12.133> really<00:26:14.075> nutty<00:26:14.965> fringe<00:26:15.369> people<00:26:16.178> who<00:26:16.340> are<00:26:16.663> absolutely<00:26:17.084> out<00:26:17.230> for<00:26:17.311> themselves<00:26:17.731> and<00:26:17.812> not<00:26:18.119> out<00:26:18.297> for<00:26:18.378> the<00:26:18.443> good<00:26:18.556> of<00:26:18.621> the<00:26:18.670> country,<00:26:19.491> you<00:26:19.523> know,<00:26:19.668> in<00:26:19.829> high<00:26:20.071> office<00:26:20.393> because<00:26:20.635> they're<00:26:20.796> the<00:26:20.876> ones<00:26:21.118> that<00:26:21.198> are<00:26:21.263> willing<00:26:21.505> to<00:26:21.585> do<00:26:21.746> it.
00:26:21.907 --> 00:26:25.886
And<00:26:22.004> they're<00:26:22.101> doing<00:26:22.342> it<00:26:22.471> for<00:26:22.568> all<00:26:22.713> the<00:26:22.809> wrong<00:26:23.051> reasons,<00:26:23.454> but<00:26:23.550> they're<00:26:23.695> the<00:26:23.840> only<00:26:24.017> ones<00:26:24.178> who<00:26:24.259> are<00:26:24.291> going<00:26:24.404> to<00:26:24.501> step<00:26:24.807> up,<00:26:25.709> right?
00:26:25.950 --> 00:26:27.529
So<00:26:26.095> we<00:26:26.256> have<00:26:26.514> to<00:26:26.659> change<00:26:26.997> this<00:26:27.158> narrative.
00:26:28.250 --> 00:26:39.434
What's<00:26:28.523> magical<00:26:29.165> about<00:26:29.953> this<00:26:30.114> country,<00:26:30.676> what's<00:26:30.917> magical<00:26:31.319> about<00:26:31.496> America,<00:26:32.379> the<00:26:32.444> reason<00:26:32.653> why<00:26:32.845> we<00:26:33.086> all<00:26:33.344> are<00:26:33.504> so<00:26:34.067> deeply<00:26:34.468> believe<00:26:34.951> in<00:26:35.031> the<00:26:35.192> values<00:26:35.674> of<00:26:35.738> what<00:26:35.899> it<00:26:35.995> is<00:26:36.140> to<00:26:36.220> be<00:26:36.316> an<00:26:36.397> American<00:26:36.879> and<00:26:37.040> believe<00:26:37.361> in<00:26:37.490> democracy<00:26:38.693> is<00:26:38.841> because<00:26:39.236> we<00:26:39.352> own<00:26:39.401> it.
00:26:40.744 --> 00:26:44.164
Like,<00:26:41.049> we<00:26:41.226> invented<00:26:41.772> this<00:26:41.948> idea<00:26:42.976> that<00:26:43.169> our<00:26:43.377> government<00:26:43.795> is<00:26:43.939> us.
00:26:44.678 --> 00:26:45.930
It's<00:26:44.839> not<00:26:45.096> some<00:26:45.320> foreign<00:26:45.722> thing.
00:26:46.043 --> 00:26:47.022
It's<00:26:46.203> who<00:26:46.589> we<00:26:46.830> are.
00:26:47.568 --> 00:26:53.750
And<00:26:47.729> so<00:26:47.889> if<00:26:48.130> we<00:26:48.676> abdicate<00:26:49.126> our<00:26:49.334> ownership<00:26:49.816> of<00:26:49.961> the<00:26:49.993> government,<00:26:51.101> you<00:26:51.197> know,<00:26:51.342> then<00:26:51.582> we<00:26:51.743> will<00:26:51.904> wind<00:26:52.209> up<00:26:52.289> with<00:26:52.401> a<00:26:52.465> government<00:26:52.803> that's<00:26:53.011> not<00:26:53.188> what<00:26:53.333> we<00:26:53.429> want.
00:26:54.537 --> 00:26:56.737
And<00:26:54.858> I<00:26:55.115> just<00:26:55.340> can't<00:26:55.837> say<00:26:56.078> that<00:26:56.255> enough.
00:26:57.122 --> 00:27:05.198
We<00:26:57.282> need<00:26:57.523> good<00:26:57.748> people<00:26:58.712> to<00:26:59.273> be<00:26:59.450> willing<00:27:00.333> to,<00:27:00.879> you<00:27:00.959> know,<00:27:01.120> embrace<00:27:01.762> this<00:27:02.099> core<00:27:02.501> principle<00:27:03.207> of<00:27:03.320> the<00:27:03.448> American<00:27:03.785> ideal,<00:27:04.572> which<00:27:04.669> is<00:27:04.733> that<00:27:04.845> it's<00:27:04.974> ours.
00:27:05.850 --> 00:27:10.080
And<00:27:06.300> if<00:27:06.460> we<00:27:06.600> don't<00:27:06.780> step<00:27:06.980> up<00:27:07.180> to<00:27:07.280> own<00:27:07.460> it,<00:27:08.220> people<00:27:08.420> we<00:27:08.600> are<00:27:08.840> not<00:27:08.980> so<00:27:09.200> thrilled<00:27:09.380> with<00:27:09.579> will.
00:27:11.120 --> 00:27:12.020
I'm<00:27:11.260> convinced.
00:27:12.020 --> 00:27:12.220
Lauren.
00:27:12.220 --> 00:27:12.420
Wow.
00:27:12.420 --> 00:27:13.520
Thank<00:27:12.421> you<00:27:12.540> for<00:27:12.640> coming<00:27:12.860> to<00:27:13.020> give<00:27:13.120> that<00:27:13.220> talk.
00:27:14.060 --> 00:27:16.560
That<00:27:14.360> was<00:27:15.060> beautiful,<00:27:16.100> my<00:27:16.120> friend.
00:27:16.560 --> 00:27:17.680
That<00:27:16.640> was<00:27:17.120> incredible.
00:27:17.680 --> 00:27:19.460
I<00:27:17.681> want<00:27:18.520> to<00:27:18.640> vote<00:27:18.860> for<00:27:19.120> you<00:27:19.320> now.
00:27:19.460 --> 00:27:20.180
Don't<00:27:19.640> get<00:27:19.900> all<00:27:20.000> carried<00:27:20.001> away.
00:27:20.180 --> 00:27:23.680
Like,<00:27:20.380> I'm<00:27:20.520> ready<00:27:20.800> for<00:27:21.120> Lauren<00:27:21.800> 2024.
00:27:23.680 --> 00:27:24.920
Let's<00:27:23.800> get<00:27:23.960> you<00:27:24.120> in<00:27:24.200> the<00:27:24.340> White<00:27:24.540> House.
00:27:24.920 --> 00:27:28.120
No,<00:27:24.921> Clint<00:27:24.922> for<00:27:26.040> mayor<00:27:26.420> of<00:27:27.120> Salt<00:27:27.360> Lake.
00:27:28.120 --> 00:27:29.310
You<00:27:28.380> don't<00:27:28.540> want<00:27:28.720> me<00:27:28.860> mayor.
00:27:30.740 --> 00:27:32.540
So,<00:27:31.140> let<00:27:31.220> me<00:27:31.340> ask<00:27:31.500> you<00:27:31.620> from<00:27:31.740> a<00:27:31.940> business<00:27:32.140> perspective.
00:27:33.643 --> 00:27:33.900
Yeah.
00:27:34.830 --> 00:27:37.988
How<00:27:35.247> do—<00:27:36.273> what<00:27:36.529> is<00:27:36.754> the<00:27:36.994> right<00:27:37.315> type<00:27:37.507> of<00:27:37.635> leadership?
00:27:38.052 --> 00:27:45.235
When<00:27:38.132> you<00:27:38.357> look<00:27:38.549> at<00:27:38.694> leaders<00:27:40.393> who<00:27:40.618> are<00:27:40.762> doing<00:27:41.098> stuff<00:27:41.660> right,<00:27:42.044> who<00:27:42.141> do<00:27:42.221> you<00:27:42.445> think<00:27:42.782> of<00:27:43.087> and<00:27:43.247> what<00:27:43.567> are<00:27:43.744> they<00:27:43.968> doing<00:27:44.289> right<00:27:44.545> in<00:27:44.690> this<00:27:44.866> domain?
00:27:46.630 --> 00:27:47.544
Yeah,<00:27:46.710> I'm<00:27:46.870> glad<00:27:47.095> you<00:27:47.255> asked<00:27:47.431> that.
00:27:48.217 --> 00:27:51.247
One<00:27:48.313> of<00:27:48.345> my<00:27:48.698> great<00:27:48.938> privileges<00:27:49.516> is<00:27:49.660> I<00:27:49.916> do<00:27:50.061> get<00:27:50.221> to<00:27:50.301> work<00:27:50.461> with<00:27:50.574> a<00:27:50.638> lot<00:27:50.814> of<00:27:50.894> CEOs.
00:27:51.311 --> 00:27:53.492
So<00:27:51.680> I<00:27:51.760> spend,<00:27:52.145> you<00:27:52.177> know,<00:27:52.321> I<00:27:52.385> sort<00:27:52.498> of<00:27:52.546> have<00:27:52.706> this<00:27:52.947> like<00:27:53.107> dual<00:27:53.283> career.
00:27:53.540 --> 00:27:58.205
I<00:27:53.668> do<00:27:53.764> a<00:27:53.780> lot<00:27:54.005> of<00:27:54.069> work<00:27:54.245> on<00:27:54.405> diversity<00:27:54.870> in<00:27:55.031> corporate<00:27:55.207> America<00:27:55.592> and<00:27:55.672> then<00:27:55.832> I<00:27:55.848> do<00:27:56.089> my<00:27:56.233> work<00:27:56.410> in<00:27:56.490> diversity<00:27:56.794> and<00:27:56.891> politics<00:27:57.371> and<00:27:57.612> media,<00:27:57.836> etc.
00:27:58.798 --> 00:28:20.577
But<00:27:59.199> I'm<00:28:00.097> really<00:28:00.498> inspired<00:28:01.219> by<00:28:01.460> some<00:28:01.716> of<00:28:01.957> the<00:28:02.904> white<00:28:03.241> male<00:28:03.611> CEOs<00:28:04.350> who<00:28:05.137> have<00:28:06.262> taken<00:28:06.760> the<00:28:06.985> challenge<00:28:07.499> of<00:28:07.563> diversity<00:28:09.234> deeply<00:28:09.716> personally<00:28:10.359> and<00:28:10.519> seriously<00:28:11.965> and<00:28:12.126> have<00:28:12.383> put<00:28:12.624> their<00:28:12.849> own<00:28:13.090> careers<00:28:13.492> on<00:28:13.588> the<00:28:13.733> line<00:28:14.777> to<00:28:15.098> make<00:28:15.355> good<00:28:15.661> on<00:28:15.837> the<00:28:16.303> commitments<00:28:17.026> and<00:28:17.283> this<00:28:17.524> vision<00:28:17.910> of<00:28:18.006> a<00:28:18.022> more<00:28:18.263> diverse,<00:28:18.649> inclusive<00:28:19.854> corporate<00:28:20.111> America.
00:28:20.962 --> 00:28:22.923
And<00:28:21.621> I<00:28:21.766> think<00:28:21.926> they<00:28:22.023> deserve<00:28:22.344> credit<00:28:22.585> for<00:28:22.665> that.
00:28:23.372 --> 00:28:31.952
And<00:28:23.629> it<00:28:23.710> bothers<00:28:24.272> me<00:28:24.433> that<00:28:26.521> we're<00:28:27.068> so<00:28:27.164> skeptical<00:28:27.887> sometimes<00:28:28.594> about<00:28:29.317> CEO<00:28:29.735> leadership<00:28:30.233> and<00:28:30.361> their<00:28:30.474> ability<00:28:30.940> to<00:28:31.100> drive<00:28:31.406> culture<00:28:31.663> change.
00:28:32.370 --> 00:28:36.339
When<00:28:32.466> you<00:28:32.788> look<00:28:33.029> at<00:28:33.109> the<00:28:33.270> ways<00:28:33.591> in<00:28:33.736> which—<00:28:34.619> I<00:28:34.652> mean,<00:28:34.796> there<00:28:34.941> are<00:28:35.021> hundreds<00:28:35.535> of<00:28:35.664> CEOs<00:28:36.162> now.
00:28:36.805 --> 00:28:38.090
There<00:28:36.885> are<00:28:36.981> many<00:28:37.206> more<00:28:37.447> women<00:28:37.688> than<00:28:37.849> there<00:28:37.994> were.
00:28:38.170 --> 00:28:41.015
We<00:28:38.315> do<00:28:38.411> have<00:28:38.572> a<00:28:38.653> record<00:28:39.038> number<00:28:39.295> of<00:28:39.440> women<00:28:39.681> CEOs<00:28:40.018> in<00:28:40.083> the<00:28:40.163> Fortune<00:28:40.420> 500<00:28:40.822> now.
00:28:41.400 --> 00:28:43.682
I<00:28:41.464> think<00:28:41.609> we're<00:28:41.689> up<00:28:41.786> to<00:28:41.946> 11%,<00:28:42.573> which<00:28:42.734> is<00:28:42.830> pretty<00:28:43.007> extraordinary.
00:28:44.260 --> 00:28:46.912
Not<00:28:44.437> enough,<00:28:44.839> but<00:28:45.015> it's<00:28:45.160> a<00:28:45.305> big<00:28:45.546> climb<00:28:46.028> from<00:28:46.205> a<00:28:46.285> few<00:28:46.446> years<00:28:46.687> ago.
00:28:47.474 --> 00:29:10.714
But<00:28:47.651> even<00:28:47.908> among<00:28:49.097> the<00:28:49.482> many<00:28:49.756> male<00:28:50.157> CEOs<00:28:50.945> in<00:28:51.009> the<00:28:51.089> Fortune<00:28:51.298> 500,<00:28:51.684> and<00:28:51.748> obviously<00:28:52.246> in<00:28:52.310> the<00:28:52.391> tech<00:28:52.551> industry<00:28:53.033> and<00:28:53.194> all<00:28:53.274> the<00:28:53.355> worlds<00:28:53.596> that<00:28:53.757> you<00:28:53.933> serve,<00:28:55.186> I<00:28:55.282> think<00:28:55.458> it's<00:28:55.667> remarkable,<00:28:56.788> the<00:28:57.045> very<00:28:57.349> serious<00:28:57.846> commitment<00:28:58.327> that<00:28:58.823> CEOs<00:28:59.272> are<00:28:59.304> making<00:28:59.673> on<00:28:59.753> a<00:28:59.785> couple<00:29:00.009> fronts,<00:29:00.891> obviously<00:29:01.291> to<00:29:01.371> diversity<00:29:01.772> and<00:29:01.868> inclusion,<00:29:02.814> and<00:29:02.894> to<00:29:03.038> really<00:29:03.214> to<00:29:03.374> try—<00:29:03.695> trying<00:29:04.080> to<00:29:04.160> hold<00:29:04.400> their<00:29:04.640> leaders<00:29:04.977> and<00:29:05.041> themselves<00:29:05.522> accountable<00:29:06.019> for<00:29:06.163> making<00:29:06.435> sure<00:29:06.724> that<00:29:06.820> their<00:29:07.445> boards<00:29:07.781> and<00:29:07.861> their<00:29:08.022> leadership<00:29:08.406> teams<00:29:08.743> are<00:29:08.807> representative<00:29:09.864> of<00:29:09.961> America<00:29:10.345> and<00:29:10.425> the<00:29:10.505> world.
00:29:11.307 --> 00:29:33.681
The<00:29:11.387> second<00:29:11.787> is<00:29:12.012> on<00:29:12.188> CSR,<00:29:12.989> you<00:29:13.069> know,<00:29:13.470> impact,<00:29:14.415> and<00:29:14.896> the<00:29:14.992> kinds<00:29:15.377> of<00:29:15.457> commitments<00:29:15.938> that<00:29:16.034> I'm<00:29:16.194> seeing,<00:29:16.915> you<00:29:16.947> know,<00:29:17.059> really<00:29:17.380> almost<00:29:17.620> every<00:29:17.797> major<00:29:18.101> company<00:29:18.918> has<00:29:19.159> now<00:29:19.543> come<00:29:19.720> to<00:29:19.864> understand<00:29:20.521> that<00:29:21.146> social<00:29:21.787> good<00:29:22.685> is<00:29:23.166> a<00:29:23.182> non-negotiable,<00:29:24.368> that<00:29:24.608> you<00:29:24.753> must<00:29:25.089> have<00:29:25.346> a<00:29:25.410> commitment<00:29:26.051> to<00:29:26.772> whether<00:29:27.013> it's<00:29:27.253> ESG<00:29:27.959> or<00:29:28.135> it's<00:29:28.359> sustainability<00:29:29.177> as<00:29:29.337> sort<00:29:29.482> of<00:29:29.562> a<00:29:29.578> larger<00:29:29.962> principle,<00:29:30.924> or,<00:29:31.245> you<00:29:31.277> know,<00:29:31.421> just<00:29:31.581> sort<00:29:31.726> of<00:29:31.982> being<00:29:32.303> a<00:29:32.383> good<00:29:32.688> actor<00:29:33.008> in<00:29:33.088> the<00:29:33.249> world.
00:29:34.467 --> 00:29:48.702
That<00:29:34.563> is<00:29:34.691> a<00:29:34.771> remarkable<00:29:35.605> sea<00:29:35.829> change<00:29:36.391> in<00:29:36.535> 10<00:29:36.711> years,<00:29:37.513> you<00:29:37.561> know,<00:29:37.737> just<00:29:37.994> for<00:29:38.170> such<00:29:38.474> a<00:29:38.555> huge<00:29:39.052> number<00:29:39.340> of<00:29:39.500> companies<00:29:40.542> to<00:29:40.638> be<00:29:40.783> taking<00:29:41.584> leading<00:29:41.905> positions<00:29:42.386> on,<00:29:42.787> you<00:29:42.867> know,<00:29:42.963> net<00:29:43.203> zero<00:29:43.508> on<00:29:43.668> carbon<00:29:44.390> and,<00:29:44.967> you<00:29:45.063> know,<00:29:45.608> pushing<00:29:46.025> and,<00:29:46.329> you<00:29:46.393> know,<00:29:47.131> divesting<00:29:47.996> from<00:29:48.237> investments.
00:29:48.750 --> 00:29:56.236
And<00:29:48.894> I<00:29:48.974> mean,<00:29:49.118> there's<00:29:49.215> just<00:29:49.519> endless<00:29:49.856> numbers<00:29:50.192> of<00:29:50.321> ways<00:29:50.497> in<00:29:50.577> which<00:29:50.737> companies<00:29:51.202> are<00:29:51.779> becoming<00:29:52.180> real<00:29:52.421> leaders<00:29:52.982> in<00:29:53.463> the<00:29:53.543> climate<00:29:54.040> fight<00:29:54.505> and<00:29:54.729> just<00:29:54.969> in<00:29:55.066> sustainability<00:29:55.867> generally.
00:29:56.813 --> 00:30:01.317
And<00:29:56.909> then<00:29:57.069> the<00:29:57.214> third<00:29:57.534> piece<00:29:57.807> is<00:29:57.935> just<00:29:58.192> in<00:29:58.272> terms<00:29:58.592> of<00:29:58.993> a<00:29:59.057> more<00:29:59.298> inclusive<00:30:00.275> management<00:30:00.740> and<00:30:00.836> culture.
00:30:01.782 --> 00:30:09.429
And<00:30:01.959> I<00:30:02.103> think<00:30:03.802> just<00:30:04.026> the<00:30:04.267> environment<00:30:05.068> for<00:30:05.165> working<00:30:05.469> in<00:30:05.549> a<00:30:05.581> big<00:30:05.790> company<00:30:06.207> today<00:30:06.591> is<00:30:06.687> so<00:30:06.928> radically<00:30:07.409> different<00:30:07.729> than<00:30:07.810> it<00:30:07.890> was<00:30:08.194> when<00:30:08.291> we<00:30:08.451> were<00:30:08.611> coming<00:30:08.996> up,<00:30:09.236> Clint.
00:30:09.493 --> 00:30:12.298
I<00:30:09.669> mean,<00:30:10.198> you<00:30:10.294> and<00:30:10.374> I<00:30:10.439> are<00:30:11.160> solidly<00:30:11.721> Gen<00:30:11.961> X.
00:30:12.763 --> 00:30:18.726
And<00:30:13.404> it's<00:30:13.516> a<00:30:13.645> completely,<00:30:14.542> completely<00:30:15.103> different<00:30:15.408> world<00:30:15.745> that<00:30:16.129> our<00:30:16.786> younger<00:30:17.171> colleagues<00:30:17.893> are<00:30:18.069> coming<00:30:18.454> into.
00:30:19.175 --> 00:30:20.089
And<00:30:19.271> they're<00:30:19.447> shaping<00:30:19.912> it.
00:30:20.153 --> 00:30:24.609
I<00:30:20.169> mean,<00:30:20.457> so<00:30:20.650> much<00:30:20.890> of<00:30:21.018> this<00:30:21.195> is<00:30:21.355> driven<00:30:21.756> by<00:30:21.996> just<00:30:22.221> the<00:30:22.301> sort<00:30:22.493> of<00:30:22.862> relentlessness<00:30:23.776> of<00:30:23.824> the<00:30:23.872> Gen<00:30:24.000> Zs.
00:30:24.962 --> 00:30:27.913
Of<00:30:25.106> the<00:30:25.203> millennials<00:30:25.764> and<00:30:25.844> the<00:30:25.924> Gen<00:30:26.165> Zs<00:30:26.566> who<00:30:26.726> are<00:30:26.790> like<00:30:27.191> not<00:30:27.448> having<00:30:27.769> it.
00:30:28.394 --> 00:30:33.110
Like<00:30:28.555> they<00:30:28.651> will<00:30:28.875> vote<00:30:29.036> with<00:30:29.132> their<00:30:29.276> feet<00:30:30.078> and<00:30:30.175> walk<00:30:30.399> out<00:30:30.479> the<00:30:30.560> door<00:30:31.217> if<00:30:31.297> they<00:30:31.458> think<00:30:31.618> the<00:30:31.698> culture<00:30:32.019> is<00:30:32.115> not<00:30:32.324> living<00:30:32.500> up<00:30:32.580> to<00:30:32.677> its<00:30:32.837> values.
00:30:33.206 --> 00:30:35.676
But<00:30:33.302> before<00:30:33.559> they<00:30:33.703> do,<00:30:33.944> they're<00:30:34.120> going<00:30:34.264> to<00:30:34.409> really<00:30:34.649> hold<00:30:34.810> the<00:30:34.906> CEO<00:30:35.307> to<00:30:35.467> account.
00:30:35.788 --> 00:30:41.338
And<00:30:35.852> they're<00:30:35.932> probably<00:30:36.125> going<00:30:36.221> to<00:30:36.253> make<00:30:36.366> a<00:30:36.430> big<00:30:36.590> stink<00:30:37.793> before<00:30:38.098> they<00:30:38.194> walk<00:30:38.499> out<00:30:38.595> the<00:30:38.755> door,<00:30:39.637> which<00:30:39.782> is<00:30:39.878> not<00:30:40.103> always<00:30:40.279> the<00:30:40.343> easiest<00:30:40.760> thing<00:30:40.921> to<00:30:41.001> deal<00:30:41.225> with.
00:30:41.402 --> 00:30:46.037
But<00:30:41.562> it's<00:30:42.107> remarkable,<00:30:42.685> their<00:30:42.909> courage<00:30:43.326> and<00:30:43.423> their<00:30:43.631> willingness<00:30:44.128> to<00:30:44.289> like<00:30:44.449> challenge<00:30:44.834> the<00:30:44.914> status<00:30:45.171> quo<00:30:45.411> everywhere<00:30:45.732> they<00:30:45.812> go.
00:30:47.320 --> 00:30:49.229
And<00:30:47.641> I<00:30:47.737> do<00:30:47.881> think<00:30:48.058> that's<00:30:48.282> on<00:30:48.379> balance<00:30:48.699> a<00:30:48.844> good<00:30:49.020> thing.
00:30:49.501 --> 00:30:54.938
It's<00:30:49.742> sometimes,<00:30:50.207> you<00:30:50.239> know,<00:30:51.025> the<00:30:51.185> line,<00:30:51.506> the<00:30:51.667> woke<00:30:51.907> line<00:30:52.308> sometimes<00:30:52.709> gets<00:30:52.934> a<00:30:52.966> little,<00:30:53.415> you<00:30:53.447> know,<00:30:54.168> Sometimes<00:30:54.489> it's<00:30:54.633> a<00:30:54.698> lot.
00:30:55.435 --> 00:31:09.753
But<00:30:55.900> I<00:30:56.798> think<00:30:56.958> that<00:30:57.103> on<00:30:57.279> balance,<00:30:58.546> the<00:30:58.642> sort<00:30:58.802> of<00:30:59.107> activist,<00:30:59.508> the<00:30:59.684> everyday<00:31:00.229> activism<00:31:01.672> of<00:31:01.848> younger<00:31:02.955> folks<00:31:03.372> in<00:31:03.452> the<00:31:03.532> workforce<00:31:04.574> is<00:31:04.718> making<00:31:05.039> a<00:31:05.135> radical<00:31:05.600> and<00:31:05.696> permanent<00:31:06.161> change<00:31:06.963> in<00:31:07.059> ways<00:31:07.236> that<00:31:07.364> are<00:31:07.460> very<00:31:07.765> good,<00:31:08.021> not<00:31:08.182> just<00:31:08.406> for<00:31:08.566> companies,<00:31:08.983> but<00:31:09.128> for<00:31:09.224> society.
00:31:11.132 --> 00:31:20.303
How<00:31:11.372> do<00:31:11.468> we<00:31:11.645> know<00:31:12.414> whether<00:31:13.312> they're<00:31:13.617> doing<00:31:14.034> it<00:31:14.755> because<00:31:15.140> they<00:31:15.252> mean<00:31:15.573> it<00:31:17.080> or<00:31:17.321> they're<00:31:17.625> doing<00:31:18.026> it<00:31:18.603> for<00:31:19.164> public<00:31:19.790> relations?
00:31:20.431 --> 00:31:22.515
And<00:31:20.704> here's<00:31:20.928> an<00:31:20.992> example<00:31:21.730> that's<00:31:21.890> kind<00:31:22.066> of<00:31:22.195> interesting.
00:31:22.917 --> 00:31:24.861
And<00:31:22.997> I<00:31:23.013> don't<00:31:23.158> want<00:31:23.286> to<00:31:23.399> pick<00:31:23.640> on<00:31:23.881> Facebook<00:31:24.314> or<00:31:24.363> Mark<00:31:24.555> Zuckerberg.
00:31:24.941 --> 00:31:30.001
I<00:31:25.005> actually<00:31:25.423> interviewed<00:31:26.451> Mark<00:31:26.644> Zuckerberg<00:31:28.057> recently<00:31:28.700> at<00:31:28.812> the<00:31:28.892> most<00:31:29.117> recent<00:31:29.519> summit.
00:31:30.547 --> 00:31:39.976
And<00:31:31.928> they<00:31:32.105> say<00:31:32.330> a<00:31:32.394> lot<00:31:32.587> of<00:31:32.716> this<00:31:32.812> stuff,<00:31:33.213> but<00:31:33.920> then<00:31:34.081> on<00:31:34.177> balance,<00:31:34.499> I'm<00:31:34.643> not<00:31:34.900> sure<00:31:36.763> if<00:31:36.908> Facebook<00:31:37.406> is<00:31:37.631> net<00:31:37.952> good<00:31:38.257> for<00:31:38.370> the<00:31:38.579> world,<00:31:38.996> net<00:31:39.302> bad<00:31:39.639> for<00:31:39.783> the<00:31:39.864> world.
00:31:40.024 --> 00:31:40.924
Just<00:31:40.137> like,<00:31:40.346> I<00:31:40.442> don't<00:31:40.603> know.
00:31:41.550 --> 00:31:50.369
And<00:31:41.807> see,<00:31:42.032> he<00:31:42.145> seems<00:31:42.370> like<00:31:42.594> a<00:31:43.092> decent<00:31:43.398> enough<00:31:43.655> guy<00:31:43.960> and<00:31:44.024> he's<00:31:45.036> tackling<00:31:45.582> and<00:31:45.679> thinking<00:31:45.920> about<00:31:46.145> these<00:31:46.305> problems<00:31:47.189> and<00:31:47.253> that<00:31:47.349> type<00:31:47.430> of—<00:31:47.590> that's<00:31:47.751> just<00:31:47.992> one<00:31:48.136> example<00:31:48.699> of<00:31:48.795> a<00:31:48.956> really<00:31:49.213> major,<00:31:49.759> major<00:31:50.160> company.
00:31:50.786 --> 00:31:51.683
That<00:31:50.850> has<00:31:51.042> so<00:31:51.203> much<00:31:51.443> power.
00:31:51.763 --> 00:31:55.785
I<00:31:51.924> think<00:31:52.068> he<00:31:52.148> has<00:31:52.308> more<00:31:52.404> power<00:31:52.629> than<00:31:52.709> most<00:31:52.885> countries,<00:31:54.087> right,<00:31:54.888> in<00:31:55.048> the<00:31:55.192> world.
00:31:56.330 --> 00:32:02.755
How<00:31:56.490> do,<00:31:56.907> how<00:31:56.987> do<00:31:57.275> we<00:31:57.307> know<00:31:57.852> if<00:31:58.012> that<00:31:58.397> is<00:31:58.717> just<00:31:59.054> PR<00:32:00.399> or<00:32:00.576> if<00:32:00.800> it's—<00:32:01.297> yeah,<00:32:01.858> and<00:32:01.938> they<00:32:02.162> actually<00:32:02.514> mean<00:32:02.675> it?
00:32:04.005 --> 00:32:08.635
Well,<00:32:04.101> sometimes<00:32:04.581> it<00:32:04.726> is,<00:32:04.982> and<00:32:05.126> I<00:32:05.222> think<00:32:05.383> people<00:32:05.623> are<00:32:05.783> holding<00:32:06.087> companies<00:32:06.440> accountable<00:32:06.969> when<00:32:07.129> they're<00:32:07.225> not<00:32:07.802> serious<00:32:08.267> about<00:32:08.587> it.
00:32:08.683 --> 00:32:12.817
I<00:32:08.731> mean,<00:32:08.988> you've<00:32:09.212> seen<00:32:09.548> a<00:32:09.693> lot<00:32:10.013> of<00:32:10.109> that,<00:32:10.574> you<00:32:10.606> know,<00:32:10.846> the<00:32:10.926> sort<00:32:11.215> of<00:32:12.016> calling<00:32:12.577> out.
00:32:12.897 --> 00:32:25.450
And<00:32:12.993> this<00:32:13.153> is<00:32:13.298> one<00:32:13.474> place<00:32:13.714> where<00:32:13.794> social<00:32:14.099> media,<00:32:14.339> I<00:32:14.499> think,<00:32:14.660> actually<00:32:14.900> has<00:32:15.012> a<00:32:15.220> positive<00:32:15.621> role<00:32:15.781> to<00:32:15.877> play,<00:32:16.182> which<00:32:16.294> is<00:32:16.422> that<00:32:16.582> it<00:32:16.678> does<00:32:16.919> enable<00:32:17.880> people<00:32:18.072> to<00:32:18.201> call<00:32:18.585> out<00:32:19.310> corporate<00:32:19.910> malfeasance<00:32:20.630> or<00:32:20.990> sort<00:32:21.270> of<00:32:21.390> corporate<00:32:21.430> hypocrisy<00:32:22.170> in<00:32:22.750> a<00:32:22.970> way<00:32:23.130> that<00:32:23.530> didn't<00:32:24.150> exist<00:32:24.690> before.
00:32:25.450 --> 00:32:27.210
And<00:32:25.630> there's<00:32:25.910> a<00:32:26.170> lot<00:32:26.290> of<00:32:26.470> examples<00:32:26.770> of<00:32:26.990> that.
00:32:27.210 --> 00:32:32.030
I<00:32:27.290> mean,<00:32:27.370> I<00:32:27.371> was<00:32:27.450> at<00:32:27.590> Global<00:32:27.810> Citizen<00:32:28.330> a<00:32:29.290> week<00:32:29.530> ago,<00:32:29.910> and<00:32:30.190> Global<00:32:30.470> Citizen's<00:32:31.030> amazing.
00:32:32.030 --> 00:32:37.750
And<00:32:32.370> I<00:32:33.010> couldn't<00:32:33.250> help<00:32:33.510> thinking,<00:32:33.850> I<00:32:33.851> mean,<00:32:34.170> Coca-Cola<00:32:34.510> did<00:32:34.730> this<00:32:34.930> big<00:32:35.310> ad<00:32:35.530> about<00:32:35.810> taking<00:32:36.090> all<00:32:36.290> the<00:32:36.410> plastics<00:32:36.790> out<00:32:37.010> of<00:32:37.170> the<00:32:37.370> sea.
00:32:37.750 --> 00:32:41.200
But<00:32:38.090> you<00:32:38.350> cannot<00:32:38.690> say,<00:32:39.330> well,<00:32:39.331> yeah,<00:32:39.530> but<00:32:39.670> you're<00:32:39.930> making<00:32:40.310> the<00:32:40.550> plastics.
00:32:41.330 --> 00:32:45.590
So<00:32:41.650> I'm<00:32:41.970> glad<00:32:42.170> you're<00:32:42.310> working<00:32:42.590> to<00:32:42.830> take<00:32:42.831> them<00:32:42.950> out<00:32:43.050> of<00:32:43.150> the<00:32:43.310> sea,<00:32:43.510> but<00:32:43.650> when<00:32:43.910> are<00:32:44.010> we<00:32:44.110> going<00:32:44.170> to<00:32:44.270> start<00:32:44.450> to<00:32:44.610> stop<00:32:44.790> making<00:32:44.950> the<00:32:45.190> plastics?
00:32:45.850 --> 00:32:48.450
Like,<00:32:46.050> you<00:32:46.070> can't—<00:32:47.330> this<00:32:47.530> is<00:32:47.850> gray.
00:32:49.963 --> 00:32:53.014
I<00:32:50.445> applaud<00:32:51.167> every<00:32:51.408> company<00:32:51.874> that<00:32:52.051> is<00:32:52.195> trying<00:32:52.452> to<00:32:52.597> do<00:32:52.693> good.
00:32:53.095 --> 00:32:56.291
And<00:32:53.175> I<00:32:53.319> think<00:32:53.480> that<00:32:53.641> those<00:32:53.833> are—<00:32:54.155> that's<00:32:54.396> a<00:32:54.636> set<00:32:54.925> of<00:32:55.006> values<00:32:55.343> that<00:32:55.488> should<00:32:55.648> be<00:32:55.729> encouraged.
00:32:56.692 --> 00:33:04.257
I<00:32:56.789> don't<00:32:57.013> want<00:32:57.415> corporations<00:32:57.929> to<00:32:58.073> be<00:32:58.218> discouraged<00:32:58.957> from<00:32:59.198> making<00:32:59.535> strides<00:33:00.081> because<00:33:00.386> they're<00:33:00.627> worried<00:33:01.045> that<00:33:01.366> if<00:33:01.446> they<00:33:01.526> don't<00:33:01.687> go<00:33:01.831> far<00:33:02.008> enough<00:33:02.313> that<00:33:02.410> they're<00:33:02.586> going<00:33:02.731> to<00:33:02.795> get<00:33:03.614> hammered.
00:33:04.722 --> 00:33:09.749
On<00:33:04.803> the<00:33:04.899> other<00:33:05.044> hand,<00:33:05.445> on<00:33:05.606> balance,<00:33:05.927> it<00:33:05.959> doesn't<00:33:06.184> bother<00:33:06.425> me<00:33:06.521> that<00:33:06.666> much<00:33:06.842> if<00:33:06.971> they're<00:33:07.131> worried<00:33:07.308> about<00:33:07.453> getting<00:33:07.694> hammered<00:33:08.015> and<00:33:08.111> then<00:33:08.256> they're<00:33:08.352> going<00:33:08.497> to<00:33:08.593> do<00:33:08.689> something<00:33:08.994> better<00:33:09.235> because<00:33:09.573> of<00:33:09.701> it.
00:33:09.814 --> 00:33:13.732
So<00:33:10.424> look,<00:33:10.681> I<00:33:11.002> think<00:33:11.163> for<00:33:11.323> sure<00:33:11.628> there's<00:33:11.869> companies<00:33:12.207> that<00:33:12.351> it's<00:33:12.528> just<00:33:12.753> a<00:33:12.929> PR<00:33:13.250> whitewash.
00:33:14.037 --> 00:33:14.824
I<00:33:14.134> think<00:33:14.278> there's<00:33:14.439> no<00:33:14.519> question.
00:33:15.403 --> 00:33:17.715
On<00:33:15.499> the<00:33:15.643> other<00:33:15.804> hand,<00:33:16.703> I<00:33:16.784> don't<00:33:16.928> mind<00:33:17.169> that<00:33:17.346> so<00:33:17.490> much.
00:33:18.132 --> 00:33:23.174
Like,<00:33:18.373> you're<00:33:18.534> making<00:33:18.871> a<00:33:18.935> difference,<00:33:19.337> you're<00:33:19.497> doing<00:33:19.754> something,<00:33:20.316> you're<00:33:20.477> doing<00:33:20.717> something<00:33:21.039> positive<00:33:21.504> that<00:33:21.617> you<00:33:21.745> probably<00:33:22.163> wouldn't<00:33:22.323> have<00:33:22.468> done<00:33:22.708> otherwise.
00:33:23.784 --> 00:33:25.294
It's<00:33:24.186> a<00:33:24.250> net<00:33:24.410> positive<00:33:24.892> in<00:33:24.972> my<00:33:25.133> book.
00:33:25.679 --> 00:33:27.879
You<00:33:25.775> know,<00:33:25.920> I<00:33:25.952> think<00:33:26.096> the<00:33:26.177> social<00:33:26.434> media<00:33:26.739> companies,<00:33:27.140> it's<00:33:27.285> a<00:33:27.317> little<00:33:27.525> different.
00:33:28.023 --> 00:33:33.386
And<00:33:28.328> there<00:33:28.505> is,<00:33:29.131> you<00:33:29.163> know,<00:33:29.388> in<00:33:29.533> full<00:33:29.709> transparency,<00:33:30.496> you<00:33:30.528> know,<00:33:30.624> my<00:33:30.833> nonprofit<00:33:31.379> is<00:33:31.540> funded<00:33:31.877> by<00:33:32.503> Facebook<00:33:32.904> and<00:33:33.001> Twitter.
00:33:33.482 --> 00:33:35.827
They've<00:33:33.627> been<00:33:33.804> very,<00:33:34.109> very<00:33:34.350> good<00:33:34.510> to<00:33:34.590> us,<00:33:34.831> very<00:33:34.992> generous<00:33:35.393> to<00:33:35.554> us.
00:33:36.517 --> 00:33:40.307
They<00:33:36.614> support<00:33:36.967> our<00:33:37.031> mission<00:33:37.432> in<00:33:37.561> ways<00:33:37.818> that<00:33:37.978> are<00:33:38.059> meaningful<00:33:39.022> and<00:33:39.167> constructive<00:33:39.745> for<00:33:39.969> us.
00:33:41.254 --> 00:33:44.974
I<00:33:41.350> think,<00:33:41.768> some<00:33:42.088> of<00:33:42.297> the<00:33:42.473> criticism<00:33:44.076> is<00:33:44.156> not<00:33:44.316> totally<00:33:44.781> fair.
00:33:45.118 --> 00:33:54.832
I<00:33:45.374> think<00:33:45.535> some<00:33:45.679> of<00:33:45.823> the<00:33:46.176> stuff<00:33:46.737> around,<00:33:46.961> particularly<00:33:47.362> since<00:33:47.538> we've<00:33:47.666> been<00:33:47.715> talking<00:33:47.859> about<00:33:48.003> women's<00:33:48.260> issues,<00:33:48.532> some<00:33:48.644> of<00:33:48.676> the<00:33:48.740> stuff<00:33:48.965> around<00:33:49.526> Instagram<00:33:50.632> and,<00:33:51.273> you<00:33:51.337> know,<00:33:51.449> their<00:33:51.610> effect<00:33:51.930> on<00:33:52.010> young<00:33:52.171> girls,<00:33:53.052> I<00:33:53.213> legitimately<00:33:53.774> think<00:33:53.950> it's<00:33:54.110> not<00:33:54.351> super<00:33:54.639> fair.
00:33:55.281 --> 00:33:59.031
The<00:33:55.713> study<00:33:56.258> that<00:33:56.723> keeps<00:33:56.900> getting<00:33:57.156> cited<00:33:57.717> is<00:33:57.941> extremely<00:33:58.502> limited.
00:33:59.384 --> 00:34:01.035
It's<00:33:59.609> a<00:33:59.705> bunch<00:33:59.881> of<00:33:59.945> that's<00:34:00.170> been<00:34:00.266> taken<00:34:00.570> out<00:34:00.650> of<00:34:00.683> context.
00:34:01.308 --> 00:34:12.256
And<00:34:01.388> I<00:34:01.420> don't<00:34:01.644> know<00:34:01.789> how<00:34:01.933> you<00:34:02.029> blame<00:34:02.334> the<00:34:02.414> platform<00:34:03.392> when<00:34:03.552> you've<00:34:03.856> got,<00:34:04.417> you<00:34:04.449> know,<00:34:04.674> thousands<00:34:05.379> of<00:34:05.780> influencers<00:34:06.902> that<00:34:06.998> are<00:34:07.223> online,<00:34:07.719> like,<00:34:07.960> peddling<00:34:09.066> you<00:34:09.098> know,<00:34:09.306> super<00:34:09.643> sexualized<00:34:10.204> images<00:34:10.589> of<00:34:10.685> themselves<00:34:11.310> to<00:34:11.631> young<00:34:11.871> girls.
00:34:12.689 --> 00:34:16.664
So<00:34:13.073> it's<00:34:13.234> hard<00:34:13.474> to<00:34:13.634> totally<00:34:13.971> blame<00:34:14.196> the<00:34:14.276> platform<00:34:14.773> for<00:34:14.933> what<00:34:15.093> is<00:34:15.237> a<00:34:15.318> pervasive<00:34:15.750> issue<00:34:16.039> in<00:34:16.135> society.
00:34:17.321 --> 00:34:20.640
And<00:34:17.802> yes,<00:34:18.299> I<00:34:18.379> think<00:34:18.524> seeing<00:34:18.780> that<00:34:19.004> stuff<00:34:19.181> every<00:34:19.405> day<00:34:19.742> is<00:34:19.902> probably<00:34:20.239> not<00:34:20.383> great.
00:34:20.864 --> 00:34:24.711
On<00:34:20.944> the<00:34:21.024> other<00:34:21.185> hand,<00:34:21.441> I'm<00:34:21.585> someone<00:34:21.762> who<00:34:21.826> got<00:34:22.002> a<00:34:22.034> Victoria's<00:34:22.451> Secret<00:34:22.643> catalog<00:34:23.092> in<00:34:23.172> the<00:34:23.252> mail<00:34:23.445> every<00:34:23.685> single<00:34:23.942> day<00:34:24.070> of<00:34:24.150> my<00:34:24.230> childhood.
00:34:25.032 --> 00:34:26.571
And<00:34:25.112> I<00:34:25.176> will<00:34:25.256> tell<00:34:25.416> you<00:34:25.513> that<00:34:25.673> was<00:34:25.994> no<00:34:26.154> bueno.
00:34:27.276 --> 00:34:28.606
It<00:34:27.340> was<00:34:27.436> terrible<00:34:27.821> for<00:34:27.901> my<00:34:28.077> self-esteem.
00:34:28.703 --> 00:34:35.451
Every<00:34:28.863> woman<00:34:29.103> I<00:34:29.135> know<00:34:29.440> my<00:34:29.664> age<00:34:30.802> found<00:34:31.187> that<00:34:31.668> the<00:34:31.700> Victoria's<00:34:32.149> Secret<00:34:32.309> catalog<00:34:32.806> was<00:34:32.950> like<00:34:33.768> absolutely<00:34:34.169> devastating<00:34:34.730> to<00:34:34.826> their<00:34:34.970> self-esteem.
00:34:35.870 --> 00:34:37.655
So<00:34:35.999> this<00:34:36.162> stuff<00:34:36.275> has<00:34:36.422> been<00:34:36.584> going<00:34:36.827> on<00:34:36.990> for<00:34:37.071> a<00:34:37.087> long<00:34:37.315> time.
00:34:38.289 --> 00:34:42.315
Hold<00:34:38.597> corporations<00:34:39.117> accountable<00:34:39.571> for<00:34:39.685> what<00:34:39.815> they're<00:34:39.977> truly<00:34:40.318> responsible<00:34:40.886> for,<00:34:41.519> by<00:34:41.763> all<00:34:41.860> means.
00:34:43.351 --> 00:34:46.920
But<00:34:43.512> let's<00:34:43.738> also<00:34:44.061> look<00:34:44.223> at<00:34:44.384> like<00:34:44.562> some<00:34:44.740> of<00:34:44.885> the<00:34:44.966> larger<00:34:45.354> pieces<00:34:45.709> of<00:34:45.838> how<00:34:45.951> society<00:34:46.484> plays<00:34:46.678> a<00:34:46.742> role.
00:34:47.130 --> 00:34:50.021
It's<00:34:47.292> not—<00:34:47.550> not<00:34:47.728> everything<00:34:48.196> is<00:34:48.600> the<00:34:48.681> responsibility<00:34:49.343> of<00:34:49.424> a<00:34:49.488> corporation.
00:34:50.764 --> 00:34:51.668
Yeah,<00:34:50.942> I<00:34:51.103> think<00:34:51.249> that's<00:34:51.491> fair.
00:34:52.592 --> 00:35:01.249
The—<00:34:53.061> this<00:34:53.239> reflexive<00:34:55.909> thing<00:34:56.233> that<00:34:56.314> we<00:34:56.378> have<00:34:56.540> as<00:34:56.653> a<00:34:56.670> society<00:34:57.042> to<00:34:57.204> blame<00:34:57.527> the<00:34:57.673> platforms<00:34:58.401> for<00:34:59.388> what<00:35:00.440> people<00:35:00.764> do<00:35:01.006> on<00:35:01.103> them.
00:35:01.896 --> 00:35:02.057
Right.
00:35:02.153 --> 00:35:03.387
I<00:35:02.233> don't—<00:35:02.874> yeah,<00:35:03.115> I'm<00:35:03.259> not.
00:35:03.740 --> 00:35:11.034
But<00:35:03.900> then<00:35:04.381> on<00:35:04.542> the<00:35:04.622> reverse<00:35:04.958> side<00:35:05.215> is<00:35:05.343> like,<00:35:05.584> we<00:35:05.984> charge<00:35:06.738> these<00:35:07.043> platforms<00:35:07.764> to<00:35:07.908> decide<00:35:09.127> what<00:35:09.367> can<00:35:09.527> stay<00:35:09.832> on<00:35:10.088> them<00:35:10.265> and<00:35:10.409> what<00:35:10.650> can't.
00:35:11.098 --> 00:35:11.547
Yeah,<00:35:11.451> right.
00:35:11.611 --> 00:35:17.751
And<00:35:11.692> so<00:35:11.836> they<00:35:11.916> have<00:35:12.092> it—<00:35:12.173> they<00:35:12.317> have<00:35:12.365> like<00:35:12.557> this<00:35:12.734> insane<00:35:13.199> amount<00:35:13.455> of<00:35:13.776> power<00:35:14.176> around<00:35:14.657> like<00:35:15.299> speech,<00:35:15.780> because<00:35:15.940> in<00:35:16.036> the<00:35:16.164> United<00:35:16.357> States,<00:35:16.645> like,<00:35:16.757> we<00:35:16.902> have<00:35:17.142> the<00:35:17.222> First<00:35:17.463> Amendment.
00:35:17.799 --> 00:35:24.196
Like,<00:35:18.248> you<00:35:18.409> literally—<00:35:19.162> if<00:35:19.290> the<00:35:19.371> United<00:35:19.643> States—<00:35:20.108> if<00:35:20.188> the<00:35:20.284> government<00:35:20.573> was<00:35:20.749> running<00:35:20.974> these<00:35:21.182> things,<00:35:21.374> they<00:35:21.551> couldn't<00:35:22.673> do<00:35:22.913> what<00:35:23.074> Facebook<00:35:23.571> and<00:35:23.715> Twitter<00:35:24.036> do.
00:35:24.452 --> 00:35:32.632
Twitter<00:35:24.917> and<00:35:24.981> Facebook<00:35:25.382> can,<00:35:25.639> can<00:35:25.863> kick<00:35:26.040> people<00:35:26.424> off<00:35:26.681> for<00:35:27.563> putting<00:35:27.868> hate<00:35:28.060> speech<00:35:28.301> or<00:35:28.429> whatever<00:35:28.686> type<00:35:28.862> of<00:35:28.910> speech<00:35:29.167> they<00:35:29.247> don't<00:35:29.408> want<00:35:29.568> on<00:35:29.648> their<00:35:29.793> platform,<00:35:30.450> they<00:35:30.611> can<00:35:30.755> kick<00:35:30.932> people<00:35:31.317> off<00:35:31.573> because<00:35:31.798> they're<00:35:31.958> private<00:35:32.279> companies.
00:35:32.680 --> 00:35:35.728
They<00:35:32.712> don't,<00:35:33.563> they<00:35:33.611> don't<00:35:33.723> have<00:35:33.819> the<00:35:33.980> First<00:35:34.220> Amendment<00:35:34.621> at<00:35:34.701> those<00:35:34.926> companies,<00:35:35.568> right?
00:35:36.466 --> 00:35:39.386
But<00:35:36.627> if<00:35:36.707> the<00:35:36.931> government<00:35:37.413> controlled<00:35:37.894> these—<00:35:38.776> well,<00:35:38.856> you<00:35:38.937> get<00:35:39.033> what<00:35:39.113> I'm<00:35:39.193> saying.
00:35:39.434 --> 00:35:43.027
Like,<00:35:39.819> they<00:35:40.156> can,<00:35:40.396> they<00:35:40.541> can<00:35:40.701> regulate<00:35:41.102> speech<00:35:41.423> in<00:35:41.519> a<00:35:41.600> way<00:35:41.904> that<00:35:42.161> the<00:35:42.241> government<00:35:42.706> can't.
00:35:43.525 --> 00:35:46.573
If<00:35:43.621> the<00:35:43.765> government<00:35:44.070> had<00:35:44.246> control<00:35:44.631> of<00:35:44.712> these<00:35:44.888> platforms,<00:35:46.155> they<00:35:46.316> couldn't.
00:35:47.695 --> 00:35:48.979
The<00:35:47.776> First<00:35:48.000> Amendment<00:35:48.337> doesn't<00:35:48.578> allow<00:35:48.738> them.
00:35:49.059 --> 00:35:53.904
And<00:35:49.139> so<00:35:49.284> it's<00:35:49.444> really<00:35:49.620> fascinating<00:35:49.941> that<00:35:50.022> we—<00:35:50.487> they<00:35:50.583> have<00:35:50.743> a<00:35:50.888> lot<00:35:51.080> of<00:35:51.209> power,<00:35:51.706> and<00:35:51.882> I<00:35:52.027> don't<00:35:52.348> know<00:35:52.572> what<00:35:52.749> to<00:35:52.973> do<00:35:53.454> about<00:35:53.791> that.
00:35:54.032 --> 00:36:03.554
Look,<00:35:54.353> I<00:35:54.385> mean,<00:35:54.594> and<00:35:54.691> I'll<00:35:54.835> just<00:35:54.996> tell<00:35:55.140> you<00:35:55.252> my<00:35:55.397> personal<00:35:55.814> experience<00:35:56.296> as<00:35:56.376> someone<00:35:56.665> who's<00:35:56.842> also<00:35:57.083> a<00:35:57.227> public<00:35:57.565> figure,<00:35:58.030> you<00:35:58.062> know,<00:35:58.833> I<00:35:58.913> have<00:35:59.074> had<00:36:00.358> aval—<00:36:00.696> an<00:36:01.001> avalanche<00:36:01.418> of<00:36:01.499> threats<00:36:01.836> against<00:36:02.285> me<00:36:03.168> online.
00:36:04.613 --> 00:36:09.896
And<00:36:05.095> most<00:36:05.432> of<00:36:05.513> it<00:36:05.657> tied<00:36:05.994> to<00:36:06.942> both<00:36:07.279> my<00:36:07.375> media<00:36:07.985> and<00:36:08.066> then<00:36:08.226> also<00:36:08.724> to<00:36:08.885> my<00:36:09.045> public<00:36:09.591> office.
00:36:10.073 --> 00:36:17.346
And,<00:36:10.651> you<00:36:10.715> know,<00:36:10.827> my<00:36:10.972> town,<00:36:11.116> I<00:36:11.277> live<00:36:11.373> in<00:36:11.438> this<00:36:11.598> cute<00:36:11.775> little<00:36:11.935> bucolic<00:36:12.481> town,<00:36:12.802> you<00:36:12.834> know,<00:36:12.963> we<00:36:12.995> have<00:36:13.075> some<00:36:13.220> crazy<00:36:13.525> people<00:36:13.702> in<00:36:13.734> my<00:36:13.926> town<00:36:14.649> who<00:36:14.809> have<00:36:15.147> targeted<00:36:15.564> me,<00:36:15.789> targeted<00:36:16.174> my<00:36:16.287> kids<00:36:16.897> online.
00:36:17.892 --> 00:36:18.599
Scary<00:36:18.197> stuff.
00:36:18.759 --> 00:36:20.738
I<00:36:18.904> had<00:36:19.080> to<00:36:19.627> I<00:36:19.643> had<00:36:19.724> to<00:36:19.804> get<00:36:19.949> security<00:36:20.287> at<00:36:20.319> my<00:36:20.448> house.
00:36:21.253 --> 00:36:26.646
And<00:36:21.559> for<00:36:21.720> a<00:36:21.816> lot<00:36:22.058> of<00:36:22.138> public<00:36:22.380> officials,<00:36:22.782> this<00:36:22.943> is<00:36:23.088> like<00:36:23.249> a<00:36:23.410> daily<00:36:23.829> thing<00:36:24.150> that<00:36:24.376> on<00:36:24.472> a<00:36:24.633> daily<00:36:24.955> basis<00:36:25.358> they<00:36:25.454> are<00:36:25.599> dealing<00:36:25.905> with<00:36:26.066> death<00:36:26.243> threats.
00:36:26.726 --> 00:36:30.941
And<00:36:27.290> every<00:36:27.611> woman<00:36:27.917> member<00:36:28.094> of<00:36:28.239> Congress<00:36:28.642> I<00:36:28.658> know<00:36:28.964> has<00:36:29.141> had<00:36:29.270> to<00:36:29.302> take<00:36:29.527> out<00:36:29.559> private<00:36:29.928> security<00:36:30.427> because<00:36:30.684> of<00:36:30.812> it.
00:36:31.455 --> 00:36:32.548
You<00:36:31.487> know,<00:36:31.632> that<00:36:31.937> is<00:36:32.098> a<00:36:32.259> line.
00:36:33.142 --> 00:36:36.437
I<00:36:33.319> do<00:36:33.560> think<00:36:34.107> I<00:36:34.203> wish<00:36:34.444> the<00:36:34.589> platforms<00:36:35.167> were<00:36:35.328> more<00:36:35.569> aggressive<00:36:36.035> on<00:36:36.131> this.
00:36:36.855 --> 00:36:44.198
I've<00:36:37.160> had<00:36:37.401> those<00:36:37.578> conversations<00:36:38.285> with<00:36:38.430> Facebook<00:36:38.851> and,<00:36:39.337> you<00:36:39.369> know,<00:36:39.661> they,<00:36:41.605> I<00:36:41.703> think,<00:36:41.946> are<00:36:42.108> in<00:36:42.270> a—<00:36:42.983> I<00:36:43.242> don't<00:36:43.485> think<00:36:43.647> they're<00:36:43.793> blameless.
00:36:44.376 --> 00:36:47.260
I<00:36:44.441> think<00:36:44.554> it's<00:36:44.700> also<00:36:44.862> extraordinarily<00:36:45.510> difficult<00:36:45.915> for<00:36:45.996> all<00:36:46.158> the<00:36:46.239> reasons<00:36:46.564> that<00:36:46.709> you've<00:36:46.807> just<00:36:46.969> said.
00:36:47.779 --> 00:36:51.562
They<00:36:47.860> get<00:36:47.990> blamed<00:36:48.364> by<00:36:48.534> the<00:36:48.687> right<00:36:49.027> for<00:36:49.146> censoring<00:36:50.728> conservative<00:36:51.209> speech.
00:36:52.092 --> 00:36:54.820
They<00:36:52.188> got<00:36:52.413> blamed<00:36:52.670> by<00:36:52.830> the<00:36:52.991> left<00:36:53.697> for<00:36:53.761> not<00:36:53.954> censoring<00:36:54.291> it<00:36:54.355> enough.
00:36:55.302 --> 00:36:57.821
And<00:36:56.024> that<00:36:56.441> is<00:36:56.666> really<00:36:57.484> difficult.
00:36:58.030 --> 00:36:58.880
I<00:36:58.062> think<00:36:58.206> they<00:36:58.351> could<00:36:58.447> do<00:36:58.527> better.
00:36:59.073 --> 00:37:04.305
And<00:36:59.153> I<00:36:59.249> would<00:36:59.394> like<00:36:59.554> to<00:36:59.651> see<00:36:59.795> the<00:36:59.891> platforms<00:37:00.453> get<00:37:00.678> much<00:37:00.854> more<00:37:00.951> serious<00:37:01.352> about<00:37:01.641> hate<00:37:01.833> speech,<00:37:02.700> about<00:37:03.021> violence,<00:37:03.518> about<00:37:03.807> threats.
00:37:04.866 --> 00:37:08.493
They<00:37:05.027> do<00:37:05.267> have<00:37:05.588> now<00:37:06.070> infrastructure<00:37:06.535> to<00:37:06.696> do<00:37:06.792> that,<00:37:06.952> but<00:37:07.097> I<00:37:07.113> don't<00:37:07.273> think<00:37:07.434> they<00:37:07.594> enforce<00:37:07.915> it<00:37:08.012> nearly<00:37:08.236> enough.
00:37:08.878 --> 00:37:11.719
And<00:37:08.958> then,<00:37:09.279> look,<00:37:09.584> I<00:37:09.681> think,<00:37:09.986> you<00:37:10.066> know,<00:37:10.387> I<00:37:10.483> think<00:37:10.708> Twitter<00:37:10.981> made<00:37:11.205> the<00:37:11.269> right<00:37:11.510> call.
00:37:12.489 --> 00:37:19.887
And<00:37:12.569> I'm<00:37:12.890> very<00:37:13.195> proud<00:37:13.532> of<00:37:13.628> Twitter<00:37:13.933> for<00:37:14.078> having<00:37:14.335> made<00:37:14.495> the<00:37:14.575> call<00:37:14.896> to<00:37:15.121> eliminate<00:37:15.458> political<00:37:15.843> advertising,<00:37:16.902> because<00:37:17.207> they<00:37:17.368> just<00:37:17.608> felt<00:37:17.945> it,<00:37:18.186> in<00:37:18.347> fairness,<00:37:18.651> you<00:37:18.684> know,<00:37:18.844> wasn't<00:37:19.117> a<00:37:19.149> huge<00:37:19.309> part<00:37:19.470> of<00:37:19.502> their<00:37:19.630> business.
00:37:20.176 --> 00:37:32.366
Fundamentally<00:37:20.899> Twitter<00:37:21.236> felt<00:37:21.959> that<00:37:22.039> they<00:37:22.184> could<00:37:22.441> not<00:37:23.244> maintain<00:37:24.143> standards<00:37:25.798> and<00:37:26.520> truth<00:37:27.484> on<00:37:27.725> the<00:37:27.757> site<00:37:28.688> and<00:37:28.785> allow<00:37:29.106> political<00:37:29.572> advertising<00:37:29.989> because<00:37:30.150> they<00:37:30.311> don't<00:37:30.536> have<00:37:30.776> the<00:37:30.857> capacity<00:37:31.740> to<00:37:31.836> regulate<00:37:32.238> it.
00:37:32.720 --> 00:37:39.273
And<00:37:32.800> they<00:37:32.880> don't<00:37:33.137> have<00:37:33.282> the<00:37:33.362> capacity<00:37:34.470> to<00:37:34.968> moderate<00:37:35.611> whether<00:37:35.820> or<00:37:35.852> not<00:37:36.093> the<00:37:36.173> political<00:37:36.639> advertising<00:37:37.137> was<00:37:37.297> peddling<00:37:38.357> false<00:37:38.759> information.
00:37:39.385 --> 00:37:40.541
And<00:37:39.530> so<00:37:39.690> they<00:37:39.787> just<00:37:40.092> got<00:37:40.252> rid<00:37:40.365> of<00:37:40.445> it.
00:37:41.216 --> 00:37:43.352
And<00:37:41.634> I<00:37:41.714> think<00:37:41.858> that<00:37:41.955> was<00:37:42.196> 100%<00:37:42.854> the<00:37:42.935> right<00:37:43.143> call.
00:37:43.866 --> 00:37:44.862
I<00:37:44.027> was<00:37:44.203> very<00:37:44.444> proud<00:37:44.685> of<00:37:44.766> them.
00:37:44.942 --> 00:37:46.099
It<00:37:45.006> was<00:37:45.103> a<00:37:45.231> difficult<00:37:45.569> decision.
00:37:47.363 --> 00:37:50.681
I'd<00:37:47.524> like<00:37:47.669> to<00:37:47.766> see<00:37:47.943> more<00:37:49.296> deep<00:37:49.457> thought<00:37:50.262> on<00:37:50.342> these<00:37:50.504> things.
00:37:50.729 --> 00:37:53.161
And<00:37:50.826> I<00:37:50.906> think<00:37:51.067> political<00:37:51.373> advertising<00:37:51.808> is<00:37:51.888> a<00:37:52.098> really<00:37:52.355> great<00:37:52.678> area.
00:37:54.840 --> 00:38:01.411
So<00:37:55.017> listen,<00:37:55.274> this<00:37:55.452> is<00:37:55.596> gonna—<00:37:55.758> these<00:37:55.935> are<00:37:55.999> gonna<00:37:56.160> be—<00:37:56.643> you<00:37:56.740> managed<00:37:57.127> in<00:37:57.207> 40<00:37:57.513> minutes<00:37:57.851> to<00:37:57.932> raise<00:37:58.335> like<00:37:58.963> 5<00:37:59.317> of<00:37:59.462> like<00:37:59.704> the<00:37:59.800> most<00:38:00.283> difficult<00:38:00.670> issues<00:38:00.928> of<00:38:00.992> our<00:38:01.153> time.
00:38:01.475 --> 00:38:02.490
Thanks,<00:38:02.200> Clint.
00:38:02.538 --> 00:38:03.730
I'm<00:38:02.764> sorry<00:38:02.989> I<00:38:03.005> didn't<00:38:03.247> solve<00:38:03.489> them.
00:38:04.420 --> 00:38:06.998
But,<00:38:04.919> you<00:38:05.000> know,<00:38:05.918> no,<00:38:06.208> it's<00:38:06.498> fascinating.
00:38:07.852 --> 00:38:09.866
So<00:38:07.981> I<00:38:07.997> gotta<00:38:08.319> let<00:38:08.561> you<00:38:08.625> go<00:38:08.722> because<00:38:08.883> I<00:38:08.964> want<00:38:09.093> to<00:38:09.141> respect<00:38:09.512> your<00:38:09.608> time.
00:38:10.172 --> 00:38:11.349
But<00:38:10.317> I<00:38:10.398> want<00:38:10.559> to<00:38:10.640> ask<00:38:10.801> you<00:38:10.881> one<00:38:10.930> more<00:38:11.107> question.
00:38:11.445 --> 00:38:16.369
We<00:38:11.526> got<00:38:11.606> to<00:38:11.671> have<00:38:11.784> you<00:38:11.864> back<00:38:12.106> on<00:38:12.170> because<00:38:12.412> I<00:38:12.670> have<00:38:12.998> I<00:38:13.062> have<00:38:13.142> a<00:38:13.158> million<00:38:13.784> things<00:38:14.009> I<00:38:14.105> want<00:38:14.266> to<00:38:14.330> talk<00:38:14.507> to<00:38:14.571> you<00:38:14.667> about,<00:38:14.892> and<00:38:14.988> we<00:38:15.068> got<00:38:15.149> to<00:38:15.229> continue<00:38:15.630> this<00:38:15.791> conversation.
00:38:16.915 --> 00:38:33.096
But<00:38:17.380> as<00:38:17.541> we've<00:38:17.701> been<00:38:17.797> talking<00:38:18.183> about<00:38:18.359> social<00:38:18.696> media,<00:38:19.001> I<00:38:19.162> wonder<00:38:19.563> what<00:38:19.708> your<00:38:19.948> thoughts<00:38:20.269> are<00:38:21.072> on,<00:38:21.794> you<00:38:21.827> know,<00:38:22.854> there<00:38:23.400> are<00:38:23.560> folks<00:38:24.138> who<00:38:24.620> get<00:38:24.941> fired<00:38:25.487> for<00:38:25.663> things<00:38:25.888> that<00:38:25.984> they<00:38:26.129> post<00:38:26.402> on<00:38:26.530> social<00:38:26.835> media<00:38:28.055> and<00:38:28.472> this<00:38:28.697> whole,<00:38:28.906> like,<00:38:29.355> I<00:38:29.436> think<00:38:29.580> people<00:38:29.821> call<00:38:29.933> it<00:38:29.981> like<00:38:30.158> mob<00:38:30.623> justice<00:38:31.522> or<00:38:31.619> something<00:38:32.068> along<00:38:32.325> those<00:38:32.630> lines.
00:38:33.673 --> 00:38:38.666
What<00:38:33.770> do<00:38:33.834> you<00:38:34.011> think<00:38:34.717> the—<00:38:35.455> and<00:38:35.600> this<00:38:35.776> is<00:38:35.857> another<00:38:36.162> gray<00:38:36.418> area,<00:38:36.723> and<00:38:36.820> how<00:38:37.237> are<00:38:37.462> you<00:38:37.622> and<00:38:37.703> I<00:38:37.847> going<00:38:37.927> to<00:38:37.959> solve<00:38:38.409> this,<00:38:38.586> right?
00:38:38.746 --> 00:38:40.239
We<00:38:38.826> could<00:38:38.907> do<00:38:39.051> a<00:38:39.131> whole<00:38:39.308> show<00:38:39.533> just<00:38:39.709> on<00:38:39.806> this<00:38:39.950> one.
00:38:40.897 --> 00:38:41.074
Yeah.
00:38:41.138 --> 00:38:41.974
Isn't<00:38:41.379> it<00:38:41.460> fascinating?
00:38:42.022 --> 00:38:49.748
Like,<00:38:42.263> I'm<00:38:42.440> not<00:38:42.697> sure<00:38:43.403> what<00:38:44.287> it—<00:38:44.753> I<00:38:44.769> mean,<00:38:44.929> obviously<00:38:45.395> you<00:38:45.476> don't<00:38:45.797> want<00:38:47.323> everything<00:38:47.660> you<00:38:47.740> just<00:38:47.965> described<00:38:48.447> happening<00:38:48.849> on<00:38:48.945> social<00:38:49.250> media.
00:38:50.214 --> 00:38:56.591
On<00:38:50.246> the<00:38:50.311> other<00:38:50.455> hand,<00:38:50.632> we<00:38:50.776> all<00:38:51.033> gotta<00:38:51.178> have<00:38:51.371> some<00:38:51.596> sort<00:38:51.901> of<00:38:53.122> grace<00:38:53.684> and<00:38:53.845> charity<00:38:54.471> for<00:38:55.676> human<00:38:56.093> beings.
00:38:56.656 --> 00:39:06.294
And,<00:38:57.218> you<00:38:57.636> know,<00:38:57.925> if<00:38:58.182> they<00:38:58.342> tweeted<00:38:58.728> something<00:39:00.093> 15<00:39:00.575> years<00:39:00.896> ago<00:39:02.181> when<00:39:02.278> they<00:39:02.438> were<00:39:02.696> 16,<00:39:03.643> should<00:39:03.868> they<00:39:04.045> be<00:39:04.752> fired<00:39:05.571> for<00:39:05.731> that<00:39:06.053> today?
00:39:06.438 --> 00:39:10.036
That<00:39:06.792> type<00:39:07.081> of<00:39:07.161> thing<00:39:07.338> is<00:39:07.418> like,<00:39:07.579> I'm<00:39:07.723> not<00:39:07.884> sure<00:39:08.125> what<00:39:08.173> that<00:39:09.024> what<00:39:09.185> the<00:39:09.667> line<00:39:09.892> is.
00:39:10.534 --> 00:39:10.711
I<00:39:10.566> know.
00:39:10.871 --> 00:39:13.168
And<00:39:11.658> I<00:39:11.738> think<00:39:11.851> it's<00:39:12.011> a<00:39:12.140> really<00:39:12.397> important<00:39:12.798> question.
00:39:13.264 --> 00:39:14.453
I<00:39:13.360> mean,<00:39:13.505> look,<00:39:13.666> I<00:39:13.762> think<00:39:13.939> a<00:39:14.003> couple<00:39:14.212> of<00:39:14.244> things.
00:39:14.565 --> 00:39:19.222
I<00:39:14.645> think<00:39:14.806> many<00:39:15.031> companies<00:39:15.593> have<00:39:15.786> taken<00:39:16.091> the<00:39:16.171> position<00:39:16.653> that<00:39:17.295> their<00:39:17.456> employees<00:39:17.954> are<00:39:18.098> always<00:39:18.435> representing<00:39:19.046> them.
00:39:20.090 --> 00:39:22.964
Many<00:39:20.347> of<00:39:20.427> my<00:39:20.587> clients<00:39:20.989> have<00:39:21.214> very,<00:39:21.535> very<00:39:21.728> strict<00:39:21.969> social<00:39:22.226> media<00:39:22.515> policies.
00:39:23.382 --> 00:39:29.613
And<00:39:23.478> their<00:39:23.703> view<00:39:23.896> is<00:39:24.040> that<00:39:24.185> you<00:39:24.345> do<00:39:24.442> not,<00:39:24.747> as<00:39:24.843> an<00:39:24.940> employee,<00:39:25.325> have<00:39:25.550> the<00:39:25.646> freedom<00:39:26.433> to<00:39:26.514> post<00:39:26.754> whatever<00:39:26.995> you<00:39:27.092> want<00:39:27.798> because<00:39:28.039> you're<00:39:28.216> a<00:39:28.296> representative<00:39:28.939> of<00:39:29.083> the<00:39:29.179> institution.
00:39:29.661 --> 00:39:31.460
And<00:39:29.806> as<00:39:29.918> a<00:39:29.982> private<00:39:30.288> company,<00:39:30.625> to<00:39:30.689> your<00:39:30.785> point,<00:39:30.946> they<00:39:31.091> can<00:39:31.187> do<00:39:31.283> that.
00:39:31.910 --> 00:39:42.934
And<00:39:32.070> one<00:39:32.231> of<00:39:32.263> my<00:39:32.391> clients<00:39:33.435> fired<00:39:33.901> somebody<00:39:34.399> last<00:39:34.736> year<00:39:35.284> for<00:39:35.445> posting<00:39:37.160> a<00:39:37.289> picture<00:39:37.855> online<00:39:38.745> of<00:39:38.858> them<00:39:39.068> holding<00:39:39.651> an<00:39:39.796> AK-47<00:39:41.171> that<00:39:41.333> had,<00:39:41.575> like,<00:39:41.737> a<00:39:41.753> threatening<00:39:42.158> statement<00:39:42.707> on<00:39:42.821> it.
00:39:43.371 --> 00:39:44.776
You<00:39:43.451> know,<00:39:43.694> does<00:39:43.856> the<00:39:43.937> Second<00:39:44.228> Amendment<00:39:44.486> apply?
00:39:45.291 --> 00:39:46.483
Well,<00:39:45.565> it's<00:39:45.710> a<00:39:45.775> private<00:39:46.113> company.
00:39:47.160 --> 00:39:48.271
Does<00:39:47.321> the<00:39:47.401> First<00:39:47.643> Amendment<00:39:47.965> apply?
00:39:48.368 --> 00:39:56.092
It's<00:39:48.448> a<00:39:48.464> private<00:39:48.690> company,<00:39:49.092> and<00:39:49.173> they<00:39:49.479> view<00:39:50.284> the<00:39:50.526> online<00:39:50.864> behavior<00:39:51.492> of<00:39:51.589> their<00:39:51.750> employees<00:39:52.571> as<00:39:52.716> an<00:39:52.780> extension<00:39:53.264> of<00:39:53.360> their<00:39:53.602> brand,<00:39:54.394> and<00:39:54.491> they've—<00:39:54.960> that's<00:39:55.219> been<00:39:55.365> backed<00:39:55.559> up<00:39:55.640> in<00:39:55.785> court.
00:39:56.594 --> 00:40:04.136
They<00:39:56.933> have<00:39:57.224> the,<00:39:57.791> you<00:39:57.823> know,<00:39:59.569> the<00:39:59.667> courts<00:39:59.974> have<00:40:00.702> seen<00:40:00.879> that<00:40:01.041> favorably<00:40:01.672> and<00:40:02.157> allowed<00:40:02.497> employers<00:40:03.493> to<00:40:03.654> do<00:40:03.814> that.
00:40:04.200 --> 00:40:05.614
And<00:40:04.297> I<00:40:04.377> think<00:40:04.618> we're<00:40:04.714> going<00:40:04.843> to<00:40:04.875> see<00:40:05.084> more<00:40:05.341> of<00:40:05.422> that.
00:40:06.225 --> 00:40:09.247
On<00:40:06.306> the<00:40:06.402> other<00:40:06.547> hand,<00:40:06.772> I<00:40:06.932> do<00:40:07.350> really<00:40:07.656> appreciate<00:40:07.993> your<00:40:08.154> point<00:40:08.395> about<00:40:08.556> grace<00:40:08.797> and<00:40:08.877> charity.
00:40:09.359 --> 00:40:16.226
And<00:40:09.504> I<00:40:09.600> think,<00:40:10.950> you<00:40:11.047> know,<00:40:11.127> we've<00:40:11.304> had<00:40:11.513> some<00:40:11.673> figures<00:40:11.947> in<00:40:12.011> the<00:40:12.140> media<00:40:13.235> that<00:40:13.464> got<00:40:13.823> fired<00:40:14.297> for<00:40:14.461> stuff<00:40:14.722> that<00:40:14.869> they<00:40:14.967> said<00:40:15.278> many,<00:40:15.458> many<00:40:15.687> years<00:40:15.948> ago.
00:40:18.096 --> 00:40:24.087
I<00:40:18.192> think<00:40:18.418> on<00:40:18.595> balance,<00:40:19.948> you<00:40:20.028> know,<00:40:20.190> a<00:40:20.206> lot<00:40:20.512> of<00:40:20.544> folks<00:40:20.995> are<00:40:21.092> given<00:40:22.122> a<00:40:22.155> second<00:40:22.541> chance<00:40:23.572> at<00:40:23.669> their<00:40:23.814> careers.
00:40:24.152 --> 00:40:29.917
But,<00:40:26.552> you<00:40:26.649> know,<00:40:27.100> companies<00:40:27.779> have<00:40:28.127> to<00:40:28.458> uphold<00:40:28.955> a<00:40:28.972> certain<00:40:29.287> set<00:40:29.552> of<00:40:29.635> standards.
00:40:30.779 --> 00:40:41.495
And<00:40:31.518> in<00:40:31.679> a<00:40:31.759> moment<00:40:32.467> where<00:40:34.910> the<00:40:35.296> brands<00:40:35.698> are<00:40:35.779> being<00:40:36.020> held<00:40:36.245> accountable<00:40:36.759> for<00:40:36.968> every<00:40:37.209> action<00:40:37.483> of<00:40:37.611> their<00:40:37.708> employees,<00:40:39.265> in<00:40:39.410> some<00:40:39.588> cases<00:40:39.976> they<00:40:40.073> just<00:40:40.250> don't<00:40:40.461> have<00:40:40.638> a<00:40:40.654> lot<00:40:40.945> of<00:40:41.188> choice.
00:40:41.608 --> 00:40:44.629
But<00:40:42.561> I<00:40:42.658> don't<00:40:42.884> love<00:40:43.207> the<00:40:43.304> mob<00:40:43.627> justice<00:40:44.015> stuff<00:40:44.257> online.
00:40:46.277 --> 00:40:48.006
I<00:40:46.358> think<00:40:46.535> a<00:40:46.616> lot<00:40:46.794> of<00:40:46.923> it<00:40:47.020> goes<00:40:47.408> too<00:40:47.586> far.
00:40:50.711 --> 00:41:01.601
I<00:40:50.727> think<00:40:51.709> that—<00:40:52.346> I<00:40:52.445> think<00:40:52.608> on<00:40:52.837> balance,<00:40:53.409> though,<00:40:54.897> the<00:40:55.045> calls<00:40:55.470> for<00:40:55.617> people<00:40:55.895> to<00:40:56.174> to<00:40:57.025> take<00:40:57.185> responsibility<00:40:57.972> for<00:40:58.133> their<00:40:58.374> actions<00:41:00.284> probably<00:41:00.718> are<00:41:00.878> not<00:41:01.119> positive.
00:41:01.681 --> 00:41:04.699
But,<00:41:02.323> you<00:41:02.403> know,<00:41:02.564> we,<00:41:02.869> we<00:41:02.965> do<00:41:03.142> need<00:41:03.367> to<00:41:03.527> continue<00:41:03.945> navigating.
00:41:05.374 --> 00:41:09.741
You<00:41:05.454> know,<00:41:05.598> I<00:41:05.614> don't<00:41:05.791> think<00:41:05.935> it's<00:41:06.096> fair<00:41:06.257> to<00:41:06.353> hold<00:41:06.562> somebody<00:41:06.818> accountable<00:41:07.204> for<00:41:07.300> the<00:41:07.380> rest<00:41:07.541> of<00:41:07.605> their<00:41:07.685> lives<00:41:08.007> for<00:41:08.087> the<00:41:08.183> thing<00:41:08.344> they<00:41:08.504> did<00:41:09.066> at<00:41:09.211> 16.
00:41:10.110 --> 00:41:32.790
You<00:41:10.142> know,<00:41:10.896> I—<00:41:11.137> one<00:41:11.250> of<00:41:11.314> my<00:41:11.539> favorite<00:41:11.956> TED<00:41:12.181> Talks,<00:41:12.502> and<00:41:12.582> then<00:41:12.663> I'm<00:41:12.711> gonna<00:41:12.775> let<00:41:12.984> you<00:41:13.241> go,<00:41:13.546> but<00:41:14.525> if<00:41:14.589> you<00:41:14.685> haven't<00:41:15.007> seen<00:41:15.392> or<00:41:15.552> read<00:41:15.970> some<00:41:16.146> of<00:41:16.195> the<00:41:16.227> stuff<00:41:16.452> that<00:41:16.596> Monica<00:41:16.885> Lewinsky<00:41:17.302> has<00:41:17.415> written,<00:41:18.924> really<00:41:19.261> amazing<00:41:19.759> stuff,<00:41:21.011> because<00:41:21.268> this<00:41:21.509> is<00:41:21.541> someone<00:41:21.991> who<00:41:22.296> is,<00:41:22.857> you<00:41:22.889> know,<00:41:23.018> she's<00:41:23.194> my<00:41:23.435> age,<00:41:23.659> she's<00:41:23.916> 47,<00:41:24.719> 46,<00:41:25.505> and<00:41:26.307> is<00:41:26.403> spending<00:41:26.869> her<00:41:26.949> entire<00:41:27.366> life,<00:41:28.489> you<00:41:28.586> know,<00:41:28.955> dealing<00:41:29.356> with<00:41:30.800> actions<00:41:31.281> from<00:41:31.458> when<00:41:31.618> she<00:41:31.779> was<00:41:31.939> basically<00:41:32.405> a<00:41:32.421> kid.
00:41:33.608 --> 00:41:46.637
And<00:41:34.988> she's<00:41:35.389> been<00:41:35.566> extraordinarily<00:41:36.432> thoughtful<00:41:37.074> about,<00:41:38.342> you<00:41:38.374> know,<00:41:38.663> how<00:41:38.903> we<00:41:39.064> do,<00:41:39.304> why<00:41:39.465> we<00:41:39.561> do<00:41:39.706> that<00:41:39.866> to<00:41:39.946> people,<00:41:40.508> and<00:41:40.749> especially<00:41:41.086> to<00:41:41.230> women,<00:41:41.792> and<00:41:42.514> how<00:41:42.690> important<00:41:43.252> it<00:41:43.492> is,<00:41:44.439> um,<00:41:45.338> you<00:41:45.418> know,<00:41:45.578> to<00:41:45.659> let<00:41:45.883> people<00:41:46.124> move<00:41:46.365> on.
00:41:46.702 --> 00:41:52.271
But<00:41:46.926> also<00:41:47.247> just<00:41:47.504> like<00:41:47.969> the<00:41:48.066> way<00:41:48.290> in<00:41:48.370> which<00:41:48.611> we<00:41:48.868> publicly<00:41:49.333> shame<00:41:49.590> people<00:41:50.778> and<00:41:50.858> that<00:41:50.954> they<00:41:51.035> have<00:41:51.195> to<00:41:51.276> carry<00:41:51.516> that<00:41:51.677> their<00:41:51.822> whole<00:41:51.918> lives.
00:41:52.319 --> 00:41:55.161
And<00:41:52.464> she<00:41:52.721> really<00:41:53.042> changed<00:41:53.684> some<00:41:53.909> of<00:41:54.005> my<00:41:54.246> thinking<00:41:54.647> about<00:41:54.888> that.
00:41:55.771 --> 00:41:58.357
I<00:41:55.852> was<00:41:56.077> really<00:41:56.333> moved,<00:41:56.655> and<00:41:56.751> I<00:41:56.815> thought<00:41:56.992> it<00:41:57.056> was<00:41:57.217> super<00:41:57.538> courageous<00:41:58.019> of<00:41:58.100> her.
00:41:58.886 --> 00:42:05.951
I<00:41:58.902> think<00:41:59.127> it's<00:41:59.288> super<00:41:59.464> courageous<00:41:59.802> of<00:41:59.930> her<00:42:00.107> to<00:42:00.187> be<00:42:00.348> writing<00:42:00.653> about<00:42:00.893> this<00:42:01.215> and<00:42:01.375> to<00:42:01.455> be<00:42:01.552> talking<00:42:01.873> about<00:42:02.114> it<00:42:02.178> and<00:42:02.339> challenging<00:42:02.836> us<00:42:03.061> on<00:42:03.157> a<00:42:03.174> lot<00:42:03.398> of<00:42:03.479> these<00:42:03.655> assumptions,<00:42:04.908> um,<00:42:05.084> given<00:42:05.309> what<00:42:05.486> she's<00:42:05.727> lived.
00:42:06.048 --> 00:42:15.489
So<00:42:06.754> look,<00:42:07.011> you<00:42:07.493> have<00:42:07.734> the<00:42:07.878> privilege<00:42:08.231> of<00:42:08.296> getting<00:42:08.472> to<00:42:08.601> work<00:42:08.761> with<00:42:08.842> the<00:42:08.922> tech<00:42:09.114> industry<00:42:09.644> at<00:42:09.725> this,<00:42:09.965> like,<00:42:10.624> unbelievably<00:42:11.411> complicated<00:42:11.973> time,<00:42:12.872> and<00:42:12.936> you're<00:42:13.097> asking<00:42:13.514> a<00:42:13.578> lot<00:42:13.739> of<00:42:13.771> good<00:42:13.899> questions,<00:42:14.317> and<00:42:14.477> we<00:42:14.558> should<00:42:14.718> just<00:42:14.879> keep<00:42:15.104> asking<00:42:15.360> them.
00:42:15.842 --> 00:42:17.845
And<00:42:15.986> ask<00:42:16.082> people<00:42:16.307> to<00:42:16.355> think<00:42:16.435> really<00:42:16.867> hard<00:42:17.060> about<00:42:17.220> how<00:42:17.284> to—.
00:42:18.726 --> 00:42:20.024
I<00:42:18.806> think<00:42:18.967> you're<00:42:19.047> right<00:42:19.271> about<00:42:19.399> Monica<00:42:19.720> Lewinsky.
00:42:20.088 --> 00:42:23.998
Not<00:42:20.249> only<00:42:20.553> all<00:42:20.729> of<00:42:20.874> that<00:42:21.114> you<00:42:21.146> just<00:42:21.290> said,<00:42:21.515> which<00:42:21.691> is<00:42:21.851> true,<00:42:22.652> she's<00:42:22.877> hilarious<00:42:23.534> on<00:42:23.614> Twitter.
00:42:24.495 --> 00:42:25.008
Great<00:42:24.735> Twitter.
00:42:25.120 --> 00:42:27.588
She's<00:42:25.793> got<00:42:26.098> an<00:42:26.402> A+<00:42:26.498> Twitter<00:42:27.203> account.
00:42:27.636 --> 00:42:29.158
I'm<00:42:27.780> gonna—<00:42:27.924> yeah,<00:42:28.341> I<00:42:28.421> give<00:42:28.565> her<00:42:28.918> that.
00:42:29.222 --> 00:42:29.879
Plus<00:42:29.479> on<00:42:29.623> Twitter.
00:42:30.985 --> 00:42:32.475
Lauren<00:42:31.306> Leder,<00:42:31.530> thank<00:42:31.690> you<00:42:31.722> so<00:42:31.866> much<00:42:32.027> for<00:42:32.107> coming<00:42:32.331> on.
00:42:32.652 --> 00:42:37.539

00:42:38.597 --> 00:42:39.366
Lauren,<00:42:38.901> thanks<00:42:39.142> so<00:42:39.174> much.
