Anjelah Johnson-Reyes opened three times

Anjelah Johnson-Reyes released her seventh hour of stand-up on YouTube on Mother's Day. She paid for it. She produced it through her own company. She directed it. Ugly Baby was filmed over two sold-out nights at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, according to Deadline, and is about becoming a mother in her 40s. It followed a theater tour that, by her own count, sold more than 200,000 tickets across 100-plus dates.

The special before it, Say I Won't, was filmed at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in October 2022 and went up on YouTube the following May. She financed and owns that one too. The two Ryman shows sold 3,800 tickets and grossed $156,194, according to Pollstar. Her homecoming at San Jose Civic three months later sold 4,980 tickets and grossed $251,512.

She sat down with the CEO.com Podcast in December 2022, a few weeks after the Ryman taping, and explained how she got here. The short version: she opened for a headliner three times in her life.

Johnson-Reyes grew up in San Jose, California, in a large Mexican American family. Her parents divorced when she was eight. She changed schools often and was not a good student. She wanted to be an actress and never said so out loud.

A friend moved to Los Angeles and landed a Ross commercial and an NSYNC video. That friend told her that if she ever moved, she would help her get started. Around the same time, another friend, a cheerleader for the Oakland Raiders, suggested she try out for the squad.

Johnson-Reyes turned the tryout into a decision. Make the squad, cheer for a year, move to Los Angeles, become an actress. Miss the squad, forget the whole thing. She drove to Oakland alone. About 700 women were at the open call. When they called her number, she was sitting on the floor of a banquet room with women she had met that day.

"My first thought that came into my mind was, 'I'm going to be an actress,'" she told the CEO.com Podcast. "It had nothing to do with Oakland Raiders."

The Raiders went to the Super Bowl that season. She came home, packed her room, and left.

In Los Angeles, she worked as an extra on FRIENDS, drinking coffee in the background at Central Perk. She watched how the cast hit their marks and talked to the writers. By 2006, she was a stand-in on another show and attending a church in Hollywood that ran free classes on Tuesday nights for people trying to get into the industry. Acting, dance, singing, production. She took the acting class. A comedian named Lisa Alvarado saw her during the improv exercises and asked if she wanted to take a joke-writing class. Johnson-Reyes asked if it was free. It was.

One of the first jokes she wrote in that class was about a nail salon.

Alvarado's class graduated with a show on the Queen Mary in Long Beach. Each student was assigned five minutes. Alvarado told Johnson-Reyes to do everything she had written, which came to 12. After that, Alvarado brought her along to gigs around town and told bookers her student had five minutes if they could spare them. Johnson-Reyes did a joke about her name and then the nail salon bit.

The video that went viral was not hers. She had agreed to do 10 minutes for $25 at a show a production company was taping for Verizon, back when a comedy clip cost $1.99 to download to a flip phone. She signed the contract. YouTube launched. The company uploaded its clips. The nail salon bit passed 4 million views in about a month, forwarded around offices by people who had no idea they worked with her relatives. She never saw the money and does not know how much there was. That video is now credited with more than 200 million views, according to a Live Nation release.

She still thought of herself as an actress. What changed that was a MySpace message inviting her to a holiday party. The hosts were Mormon. The only condition was that she work clean. She arrived to find a comedy competition with 10 other comics, tied for first, and split the prize. Her share was $600, more than she had made in a single day doing anything.

"I remember when I got that $600 and I was driving home and I was like, you know what? Maybe I'll be a comedian."

She has worked clean since.

Most comics open for headliners for years before a club lets them close. Johnson-Reyes opened three times. Audiences were paying to see the woman from the video, so clubs booked her to headline with 15 minutes of material and stacked eight comics in front of her to fill the night. She wrote to 25 minutes, then 30, then 45, then an hour. Comedy Central's ladder at the time went from a 10-minute showcase to a half hour to an hour. She did the showcase, hosted by Jeff Dunham, and her agents pitched the hour before she had done a half. That's How We Do It was filmed in Houston and premiered December 28, 2009. She had been doing stand-up for four years.

Other comics noticed. Some were envious. Some assumed it was a fluke. She spent years trying to prove herself to them and then stopped.

"I was trying to prove myself to people who didn't care about me," she said. "The people who I needed to be working hard for were the fans who pay money to come to my show."

She was never a fixture at the Comedy Store. She says she was insecure and uncomfortable in those rooms, and headlining early meant she was on the road instead of hanging out. Her friends were her openers. One of them was Nate Bargatze. "If anybody deserves that, I would say it's Nate Bargatze," she said of his rise. Bargatze has said she was the first headliner to take him on the road.

The part of the business that reaches her directly is selling tickets. On a tour of about 100 cities, she blocked out mornings, started calling radio stations at 6 a.m., and gave the same interview every 15 minutes until noon, one city after another. When a market lagged, her team booked more radio. Morning radio still sells tickets. She finds this as strange as everyone else does.

Social media is a second job. A tour date cannot be a poster anymore. It has to be a video, with a trending sound, or the platform will not show it to anyone.

Her book came out of a rule she learned in comedy. Cut the fat. Some stories did not survive the cut, so for about 10 years she kept a document of the ones that needed their details. When her agent called in 2020 and said it was time, the chapters were already there. Who Do I Think I Am?: Stories of Chola Wishes and Caviar Dreams was published through Hachette Book Group in March 2022. The book tour was a stand-up tour, with a signed copy bundled into the ticket.

On the question of what a comedian can say now, she did not pretend to be braver than she is. She admires comics who say whatever they want. She double-checks her own material. "You are creating with fear of being canceled," she said. "It's not the best place for comedy, but I do find myself being in that place." Her defense is that she writes about her own life, and if a joke comes from love, how someone else takes it is their business.
